THE HOLY EUCHARIST

Tuesday, February 21, 2023

Welcome to the Monastery Chapel.

We warmly invite you to participate fully in our worship.

Covid Safety Practices

Please note that we require everyone who attends Chapel services to be fully vaccinated and boosted. The Monastery is the Brothers’ home and several Brothers, as well as members of the congregation, fall into the category of persons particularly vulnerable to COVID. While masks are no longer compulsory, we fully support those who choose to wear a mask for any reason; you may see some Brothers wearing masks. At times you may find that some windows are being left open in the Chapel to enhance the ventilation. Please plan to dress accordingly.

Collect of the Day

Presider The Lord be with you. People And also with you.

Presider Let us pray.

O God, who before the passion of your only-begotten Son revealed his glory upon the holy mountain: Grant to us that we, beholding by faith the light of his countenance, may be strengthened to bear our cross, and be changed into his likeness from glory to glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

LITURGY OF THE WORD

First Reading

2 Peter 3:11–18

Since all these things are to be dissolved in this way, what sort of persons ought you to be in leading lives of holiness and godliness, waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set ablaze and dissolved, and the elements will melt with fire? But, in accordance with his promise, we wait for new heavens and a new earth, where righteousness is at home.

Therefore, beloved, while you are waiting for these things, strive to be found by him at peace, without spot or blemish; and regard the patience of our Lord as salvation. So also our beloved brother Paul wrote to you according to the wisdom given him, speaking of this as he does in all his letters. There are some things in them hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do the other scriptures. You therefore, beloved, since you are forewarned, beware that you are not carried away with the error of the lawless and lose your own stability. But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.

The Holy Gospel Mark 12:13–17

An Alleluia is sung before the proclamation of the Gospel

The chief priests, the scribes, and the elders sent to Jesus some Pharisees and some Herodians to trap him in what he said. And they came and said to him, “Teacher, we know that you are sincere, and show deference to no one; for you do not regard people with partiality, but teach the way of God in accordance with truth. Is it lawful to pay taxes to the emperor, or not? Should we pay them, or should we not?” But knowing their hypocrisy, he said to them, “Why are you putting me to the test? Bring me a denarius and let me see it.” And they brought one. Then he said to them, “Whose head is this, and whose title?” They answered, “The emperor’s.” Jesus said to them, “Give to the emperor the things that are the emperor’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” And they were utterly amazed at him.

The Sermon

The Prayers of the People

Confession and Absolution of Sins

Presider Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor. Most merciful God, People we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done,

5 Psalm 90 Domine, refugium (The Book of Common Prayer, 717)

and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Presider Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life.

People Amen.

Invitation to Communion

Presider God’s holy gifts for God’s holy people. People Jesus Christ is holy, Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

A Note about Holy Communion

Following Diocesan guidelines, please refrain from intinction (dipping the Bread into the Chalice). If you wish to abstain from receiving from the Chalice, remember that the Church catholic has always taught that the fullness of the Sacrament is received even when only one form is received.

If you require a Gluten-Free host, please indicate to the Brother administering Bread at Holy Communion if that is your preference.

Fraction Anthem Lamb of God A Community Mass, Richard Proulx

Prayer After Communion

Presider Father of all, People we give you thanks and praise, that when we were still far off you met us in your Son and brought us home. Dying and living, he declared your love, gave us grace, and opened the gate of glory. May we who share Christ’s body live his risen life; we who drink his cup bring life to others;

10 Post-Communion Hymn O God, our help in ages past

we whom the Spirit lights give light to the world. Keep us firm in the hope you have set before us, so that we and all your children shall be free, and the whole earth live to praise your name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
