WHAT IS ‘SCHOOLS FOR SCHOOLS’ ? I have found through my research into charities and ‘aid work’ charities that education plays a major part in the cycle of getting people out of poverty. However when I looked closer at the facts and quantitative data & statistics on education across the globe, In particular Africa. I noticed that there is a major problem. I then researched into the history of twinning, in particular when town twinning was bought into action after the Second World War. It was intended to foster friendships and understanding between different cultures and to encourage trade and tourism. This idea of twinning combined with my own experience of working in and out of Uganda in primary schools sparked an idea. . . “What If struggling schools in Africa could twin with schools across The world”?

My aim is to help bring awareness to the idea of school twinning across the UK. Which could ultimately benefit schools in the Developing World and the UK. In the UK this idea could have so many benefits that could be gained from developing a school twinning programme / partnership, such as... - Generate enthusiasm and motivation for learning. - Cultivate an openness to new thinking and ideas. - Inspire a desire for positive change, locally and globally. They can help pupils develop: - Self-awareness. - Respect for others. - Skills of enquiry and critical thinking, and the ability to apply these to local and global issues. - The ability to communicate in different ways and settings. - An appreciation of diversity. - A sense of injustice and a commitment to tackling it. - An understanding of how local and global are interconnected, and of the impacts that actions have at both levels.

THE FACTS “Did you know that over 61 million children world wide do not get the chance to go to school or have an education.” “And as of 2012, 31 million primary school pupils dropped out of school world wide.” “In developing low-income countries, every additional year of education can increase a persons future income by an average of 10%.”

LOGO RESEARCH Charities & campaigns

I have been researching logos and the branding of charities & organizations. I’ve been looking particularly at what they have in common. I have also been looking at their style & colour. Generally I have seen a lot of charities using a similar colour pallet, sticking to natural colours such as greens and blues. Although this colour pallet is popular I fear that It will not aid my logo in standing out against these other charities.

6

LOGO COLOURS UNICEF

Through researching into these charity’s logos and the colours they use the colour that stands out most to me is the yellow/orange. I believe that this will work well to incorporate into my logo as all of the other charities that do use yellow/ orange only use it as a complementary colour to add contrast to the main blues or greens. I plan to use the yellow/orange as my main colour, which I believe will help my logo stand out.

TARGET AUDIENCE I have found through my research into charities and ‘aid work’. That education plays a major part in the cycle of getting people out of poverty. Inspired by my research into the different ways that aid charities help across Africa, I decided to look further into the idea of ‘twinning’ This idea sparked from my research, but also as I have been working in schools across Uganda for 4 years and have seen the need for education. This led me form the idea & concept of ‘Schools For Schools’. The ‘Schools for Schools’ target audience is teachers & children in the UK. Informing them about the idea and concept of school twinning. With a strong emphasis on improving education & the global benefits of twinning. I aim to create a simple and clear campaign that could be easily understood by teachers and children in primary and secondary schools.

8

COLOUR THEME I have chosen theses colours based on my research into different charities logos & my own personal preference. I believe that they will work well to clearly and effectively convey the ‘Schools For Schools’ message.

PURPLE

YELLOW This is my base colour. I intend to create the logo and colour theme around this dark orange toned yellow.

To complement the yellow and make it stand out I have chosen two colours that work well to enhance the brightness of the yellow. This deep purple acts as a contrast and brings the yellow to life.

TEAL I chose this colour as I already hand a very bright prominent main colour & I wanted something to add a coolness to the overall theme and tone. I believe that this teal works well to achieve a cooling effect and ultimately create a cohesive bond between the three colours.

9

LOGO DEVELOPMENT Here are the first conceptual sketches of the ‘Schools For Schools’ logo. Here I was focusing on the school building element to create a icon for the logo.

10

I then decided to simplify my idea further and concentrate on the letterforms and shapes.

11

LOGO FONT After the initial sketches, I decided that I wanted to look for a font to use in the logo. Above are the fonts I looked at and the two finalists ‘Quark’ and ‘Grota Sans Rounded’. I then looked at the different weights of these fonts, to see if I prefured one to the other.

I finally decided upon ‘Grota Sans Rounded’ I love that it is a sans serif & quite rounded it it’s letter forms. I also enjoy the heavier weights of this font and believe that it has alot of versatility. I believe that this font will work well for me to be able to clearly and simply use in the logo.

13

LOGO DEVELOPMENT I decided upon the font ‘Grota Sans Rounded’. As I believe that the wide open spaced ‘S’ fits well with my theme. I also want the font to be bold for children to be able to clearly understand the words. I then started experimenting with the letters of ‘Schools For Schools’ and developing a logo based roughly on my sketched ideas.

14

LOGO DEVELOPMENT I then developed the logo further from my sketches. I wanted to keep this very simple and clear so that it has a clear purpose. I also wanted to keep it simple as I need it to ultimately be functional and be easy for all ages to understand. I looked at using the words and also just singular letters.

15

LOGO DEVELOPMENT I then simplified my ideas further and focused on creating a logo ‘symbol’ and the optional words to go alongside. I chose to create the symbol inside a square box as it is to represent a school or a school space. I believe that this ‘S’ works well inside the box but could be developed further.

16

FINAL LOGO I then developed this idea further. I wanted to symbol to show that the ‘Schools For Schools’ campaign is to promote the idea of twinning. I then decided to use two ‘S’. I believe that this works well as it represents the name of the campaign more accurately. And also shows a mirror image of one ‘S’. This also reflects the ‘twinning’ aspect.

RESEARCH

Master Information: Egoitz Aulestia, Joaquín Rodríguez Sala This animation was created to be projected on a screen in the main window of the European Design Institute at Barcelona (IED Barcelona) announcing the new Master of Information Graphic Design, which was launched in January 2014. The animation uses simple elements to communicate a clear and concise message. “Less is More”. The animation relies on data circles, data curves, data maps & infographic displays in order to communicate the message. I enjoy the clear and simple massage displayed in this animation. Also the way they display their illustrations as clearly and simply as possible.

20

RESEARCH

Promotional Animation: Rachael Park. NY This was created as a self promotional animation for a graphic designer / animator. The music is “The Happiness of Larry” by radiotimes, which adds character to the animation & is timed well so that the movements complement the track. I particularly enjoyed this short animation as I love the simplicity in which it’s created, yet it clearly conveys the important information to the viewer. It is also up-beat and lively and this appeals to me as you want people to be interested in watching your animation, and not turn it off if they get bored.

21

RESEARCH

ELM Promotional Animation: Rachael Park. NY

This was created as a promotional animation for ELM, design agency. The backing track is lively and adds character to the animation. It is timed well so that the movements complement the track and are relevant to the voice over. I particularly enjoyed motion graphics piece as I love the simplicity in which it’s created. I love the bold choice of colours and how the creator has kept to a pallet of primary colours. I believe that this works well to strengthen a already strong message.

22

RESEARCH

RayGun Promotional Animation: Cub Studio. London

This was created by Cub Studio, London based Animation & Motion Graphic studio specialising in creating Adverts, Promotional, Broadcast and Branded content. I enjoyed the simplicity, given from the ‘flat design’ look. I also think this works well as a style to convey a clear info graphic & it would work well for all ages of target audience. I also think that the simple choice of colours works as an advantage to enhance the minimal design.

23

RESEARCH

Rent Promotional Animation: Jelio Dimitrov. Bulgaria

This motion graphic was created by Jelio Dinitrov, using After Effects and Illustrator. I particularly enjoy this motion graphic piece as I love the simplicity in which it’s created. I love the bold choice of colours used in an opposite way to many of the other motion graphics pieces I have researched, Using the main colour to change the backgrounds & keeping the informative illustrations white. I enjoy how the creator has kept to a pallet of complementing colours. I believe that this works well to strengthen the displayed information.

RESEARCH

‘Have You Heard’ Infographic: 3rdfloor. South Africa

3rdfloor is a concept-driven production company that makes short documentary films and motion graphics. This infographic was based on ‘Have You Heard’. They believe that word of mouth is stronger than traditional advertising, so the idea was to unpack what they do in a creative way. I enjoyed the simplicity in design and construct of this infographic. I love the use of pictograms to represent the population in a clear and simple way. I believe that this works well to convey a clear message & would work well for all ages of target audience. I also enjoy the use of texture on some illustrations and layers, it adds a new depth to the piece. This has inspired me to look at using pictograms in my infographic, as I want my infographic to be clear and simple.

25

WRITING THE VOICE OVER When preparing to write the voice over to accompany the info graphic, I had to keep in mind the target audience, so that I kept it simple enough for a classroom environment. Also the fact that I wanted to get a young person to read the voice over. I decided upon this as I believe that it will underpin the idea of ‘Schools for Schools’ and pupils informing other pupils of the campaign. The ‘Schools for Schools’ target audience is teachers and pupils in the UK. Informing them about the idea and concept of school twinning. I wanted to keep this at the heart of the message & really simplify everything so that it could be understood by different ages. I decided to start with a few facts about global education as I believe that this will draw in the viewers and catch their attention.

26

VOICE OVER Did you know that over 60 million children worldwide do not get the chance to go to school, or have an education!???? And as of 2012, 31million primary-school pupils dropped out of school world wide. In developing, low-income countries, every additional year of education can increase a person’s future income by an average of 10% ------------------------Schools for Schools, is a campaign that wants to twin schools together from across the UK & the developing world. - Q. Do you know what It’s like, to go to school in the developing world? - Q. Do you know what lessons they have?? Do they learn English? Maths? Science? The aim of the ‘Schools For Schools’ campaign is to improve education by sharing and learning about each others cultures. Creating a better understanding of each others lives..... Forming better Global Citizens. So why not get involved? ..... You could: Learn about different cultures. Send and receive letters from children across the world. Develop an understanding of being a ‘Global Citizen’. Help inspire and improve education in another school. How to get involved: Sign up and get an info pack!! In the info pack you will find : A schools for schools application forrm , Posters for your school & a lesson plan explaining school twinning. 27

BACKING TRACK After creating the voice over script I wanted some music to play under the voice to accompany the info graphic. I chose a simple acoustic guitar backing track, with no vocals as I needed the voice over to stand out. Another key factor for me was finding a ‘copyright’ free track. I finally found what I was looking for on www.bensound.com. I am extremely happy with my choice of backing track as I believe that it is upbeat, friendly & relaxed. And the acoustic guitar & cello accompanies the voice over well.

28

I then took to Adobe Audition to edit together my recorded voice over and the acoustic backing track. This process was key to the overall tone of the info graphic. This editing process took a full two days as I had to adjust volumes and cut up different takes of the voice over to achieve a clear and cohesive rhythm. Once I had created the final mix down I could then import it into After Effects and start timing all of the animation’s to the words.

29

STORYBOARDING The story boarding process has worked well to help me define how I can illustrate the infographic.

CREATING THE MOTION GRAPHIC I used After Effects to create the motion graphic. I firstly imported the mix-down of the voice over and backing track. I then created the info graphic background. I did this by using a shape layer & gradient to give a ‘infinity’ feel to the background. I kept the colours very simple and used white and yellow. I set the yellow to a very low opaque setting so that the illustrations would stand out against it. I then finally started importing the illustrations I had created in Adobe Illustrator. I would paste these onto the time line, accurately line them up so that the inpoint was in the correct place then load a ram-preview so that I could listen to the voice over & add markers so that I knew where the out points for certain layers were. I would then go into the different layers of the illustrations and edit the size, rotation and position keys to create smooth way for layers to animate on and off screen at the right times. I also used parenting on many of the layers, this helped massively with this time consuming task.

38

39

SHARING THE CAMPAIGN I created the three banners by using the ‘school’ illustration from the motion graphic piece. This keeps continuity and I believe works well to illustrate the theme of the campaign.

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCk6ofyWxYh2jmAWA7Z3SHNw

Once I had created the info graphic I needed a place to share the ‘schools for schools’ message. I took to three main social media sites, starting with Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. Here I created a facebook group to spread the message. This works well to share the info graphic and create a like minded group of people that want to make education a global priority.

40

https://twitter.com/Schools_For

I also created a twitter page for the ‘Schools For Schools’ campaign. This works well to spread positive messages & global educational statistics.

https://facebook.co.uk/group/schoolsforschools

I also created a YouTube channel for the ‘Schools For Schools’ campaign & uploaded the info graphic. This works well as a sharing platform for the info graphic & means that I can share the video on the other social media platforms.

41

INFO PACK To plan for this info pack I created a sketch of the layout & design, so that I knew how to create it in Adobe Illustrator. I then developed a ‘Info Pack’. This is for anyone interested in the ‘Schools For Schools’ campaign, but mainly for teachers and pupils in schools across the UK. I have kept the design clear and simple because it is going to contain : Application Form, Posters, Money Boxes & Lesson Plans. So I decided to keep the info pack design minimal in design not to take away from all of it’s contents.

42

Lets twin together and make Education a Global Priority

Lets twin together and make Education a Global Priority

MONEY BOX SCHOOL I wanted to info pack to include different things of interest to pupils and teachers. So I decided to create a cardboard money box. I thought that this could be a great activity for a class of pupils wanting to learn more about school twinning. They could make these money boxes as part of a learning tool. I also believe it adds a fun element to the info pack, and something that you can interact with and use on a daily bases, whether or not you decide to go ahead with twinning your school with another one from across the world, you could still use the money box to raise money to donate to a schools in the developing world. To create this money box & ordered one online, took it apart, scanned it into Adobe Illustrator and used the pen tool to create a template. I then created my design on-top.

43

TYPE POSTER I decided to develop a poster to go in the info pack. I used an image I took while in Uganda, as the basis. The images almost convey the message without the need for words as you see these children in poverty. I then printed the images out and created custom hand drawn type facts to fit around the images. I believe this work well and almost crosses over into shock advertising, as they are quite provoking. I wanted something that would stick in the minds of the viewers as well as displaying the information & I believe that this poster with the combination of the image and type works well to achieve this. I would say that this poster is more designed towards an older age of school pupil, maybe years 6-7 & secondary school pupils. I also believe that this poster would work well as a public tool to inform people about the campaign. I think it would work well in public places such as train stations & bus shelters.

44

45

ILLUSTRATION POSTER

I then decided to develop another poster to go in the info pack. As I know that the previous image and type poster may be too much for younger children. I decided to use the two school illustrations from the info graphic. I believe that this poster works well to convey the message of bringing awareness to the ‘Schools For Schools’ campaign & the idea of school twinning. I believe that the simplicity works well to keep the message clear. And overall it is age appropriate for primary school pupils.

46

47

LESSON PLAN I then created two lesson plans for the ‘Info Pack’. I showed them to a local school teacher to get feedback & check that they were acceptable and would work in a class environment. The teacher loved the activity ideas & different ways she could get her pupils talking about what it’s like to be in school in the developing world. The aim of these lesson plans is to encourage teachers to start talking about global education, what being in education is like in the developing world and to aid school children in the UK to develop an understanding of what it’s like to go to a school in the developing world. Also to help them to think about others, creating empathy. And finally to encourage creative thinking about their own education.

48

LESSON PLAN

LESSON PLAN

Lesson Plan 1 : Getting Started

Lesson Plan 2 : Getting Involved

Activity One

Intro

Show the ‘Schools For Schools’ DVD. Have a short Q & A about what it would be like to go to school in the developing world.

Once you have found out where your twinned school is you can start to think how you can work together and help one another.

Activity Two - Key Stage 1 & 2

Activity One - Key Stage 1 & 2

Use Google to research about the country you are twinning with. Ask these questions: - How many pupils go to school? - What lessons do they learn? - What percent of pupils stop education at the end of primary school? - What percent of pupils stop education at the end of secondary school? - How many pupils go on to complete higher education?

Make a list of all the things that are the same and all the things that are different in your school and your twinned school. This can be done in small groups. Feed back to the whole class. Write these up on the board so everyone can see. Allow group discussion.

Activity Three - Key Stage 1 Describe your school life: create a descriptive poem, take photos, paint a picture of your school, describe your school environment. Activity Three - Key Stage 2 Write a letter to a pupil in the developing world. Take photos of your school and describe the images. Draw, make build or craft your school. Learning Outcomes To develop an understanding of your school environment & school environments across the world. To think about others, creating empathy. To encourage creative thinking about their own education.

Activity Two- Key Stage 1 & 2 Start thinking and planning a activity day or fund raising day for your shcool or class. This could be: - A day of tasting school dinners from around the world - Non School uniform day - Bake sale - Cultural day: focusing on your twin school - Sponsored sports day - ‘Walk in their shoes’: a day where you turn your class, lessons, food and dress to that of your twinned school. Activity Three - Key Stage 1 & 2 Implement one of the above activity days. Learning Outcomes To open their minds to other cultures. To develop new learning skills. To develop team work and project planning.

I also created a ‘application form’ for the info pack. I created this because I want the info pack to be a tool of sharing and getting involved in the ‘schools for schools’ campaign. I have kept the layout and style similar to that of the lesson plans as to keep a cohesive theme and look to all the info pack contents.

50

CERTIFICATE

Finally I created a ‘certificate’. This is not to necessarily go inside the info pack, it is more to show what you will receive if a school decides to join the ‘Schools For Schools’ campaign and twin with a school from across the world.
