Welcome to another edition of BusineSSLife! It has been an exciting time navigating the world markets. When we last spoke the markets were soaring from a Trump win. There has been much anticipation as to the impact of a Trump administration on the markets. Thus far, the current Administration has been advantageous to investors who moved with the tide. The U.S. job market remains strong. The reason for the job market doing well is controversial, as both the Obama and Trump administrations have taken credit for the strengthening of the U.S. economy. The US Federal Reserve (FED) increased interest rates as expected, and another two rate hikes are anticipated this year. The most recent rate hike would have negatively impacted bondholders who did not reposition prior to the announcement. Happily, most of our clients exited specific securities as advised and repositioned into securities with a shorter tenure. Current indicators suggest that the cost of capital will continue to rise. Our own Administration laid out their tax plan when the budget was read March 9, 2017. Overall, the Budget was in line with what the Government has been espousing. There were no dramatic surprises, except for the draw down on the National Housing Trust (NHT) funds. The Government continued to seek ways to widen the tax net while improving its collections. Consumers will pay more for petroleum and its related products. There was an increase in the Special Consumption Tax (SCT) on the refining of petroleum, which will likely impact transportation, electricity, and production cost. For some, the most egregious increase was that placed on alcohol. How could they?! There will also be an increase in departure tax. Now this tax will break the hearts of those like myself who have wanderlust. On a serious note it is the tax on health insurance premiums and impact on electricity cost that is of great concern to Jamaicans. Jamaica is not alone in balancing the cost of island life. Barbados is having its own woes which have only worsened over the past twelve months. Their debt rating has once again been downgraded. Barbados’ economy like our own relies heavily on tourism. The situation across the pond has only exacerbated Barbados’ fiscal issues. You see, over 35% of Barbados’ tourists come from the UK and there has been significant devaluation in the pound. This devaluation could mean that even with sustained tourist arrivals it is likely that travellers will spend less. Fiscal reform is needed quickly, to stem the continued depletion of its foreign exchange reserves and high unemployment. Like the sovereign nations , everyone is doing the balancing act to manage their obligation whilst trying to save and invest in the future. Luckily, SSL is here to making that life easier. The Company continues to deliver high returns and innovative products for all investors, regardless of where they are in their financial life cycle. This edition of Business Life is chock-full of useful tips and advice on how to achieve your financial goals, there are also a few testimonials. Please enjoy!

A CUT ABOVE THE REST with Marsha Robinson
DESCRIBE THE BEAUTY INDUSTRY IN JAMAICA. The beauty industry in Jamaica is expanding in a major way. Our own stylists here elevate themselves in whatever way possible, by going to seminars and beauty shows, starting their own product line etc. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF BEING A BEAUTICIAN? My favorite part of being a beautician is doing what I love, because of the passion I have for it but most of all to please my clients in whatever way I need to. WHAT IS YOUR FINANCIAL GOAL? My financial goal is to broaden my horizon, as in investing in my business in whatever way and expecting a great return. WHAT’S THE BEST THING YOU’VE DONE TO ADVANCE YOUR CAREER? The best thing I've done so far is taking a risk in competing in beauty shows, attending seminars as well as teaching my then and now employees how to do services they were not familiar with. WHY DID YOU START INVESTING AND WAS IT A GOOD DECISION TO MAKE? I started investing because I needed extra money to pump into my business and SSL rep, Jean-Ann, encouraged me that the returns would definitely be worth it. WHY DID YOU CHOOSE SSL TO HANDLE YOUR INVESTMENTS? I choose SSL because my best friend Jean-Ann works there, plus I've heard others talk about how great they are in terms of investing.

THE RETIRING MILLIONAIRE MANUAL by Kelley Reid, Asset Manager
Retirement may seem far away, especially for the young, but when it arrives nobody ever complains about having too much money. The question now becomes whether a million dollars is enough. With that said, with lots of planning and discipline, you can reach your retirement goals and live a comfortable life during that time. While success is never a sure thing, the 10 steps outlined below will go a long way toward helping you achieve your golden nest eggs. SET THE GOAL: “A man who does not plan long ahead will find trouble at his door” – Confucius. Life does not always go according to plan but you have to plan regardless. A well thought out plan should be realistic, flexible and adaptable. Successful people will tell you in order to achieve extraordinary goals, planning is a necessity. START SAVING: This may seem obvious however it bears repeating, as far too many people never even start to save. Participating in an automatic saving plan, simply put, sign up for a plan with your bank or employer where your contributions will be automatically taken out of your paycheck and increasing your savings. Finding the cash consistently may be a challenge, particularly when you're young, but don't let that stop you from pursuing future riches. GET AGGRESSIVE: It is a known fact that the majority of the returns generated by an investment are dictated by the asset allocation decision. If you are looking to grow your wealth over time, fixed-income investments aren't likely to get the job done, and inflation can take a big chunk out of your savings. Investing in equities entails more risk, but is also statistically likely to lead to greater returns. Asset-allocation strategies can help you learn how to make picking the right mix of securities the core of your investing strategy. So speak to your adviser today.
10
BusinessLife - March 2017
PREPARE FOR RAINY DAYS: Part of long-term planning involves accepting the idea that complications or misfortune will occur. Preparation is key to avoid any setbacks that will affect your savings efforts. While you can't avoid all of the bumps in the road, you can prepare in advance to mitigate the damage they can do. SAVE MORE: Your income should rise as time passes. You'll get raises, you'll change jobs, and maybe you'll get married and become a two-income family. Every time your salary rises, so should the amount that you save. WATCH YOUR SPENDING: Vacations, car, kids and all of life's other expenses take a big chunk out of your paycheck. To maximize your savings, you need to minimize your spending. Buying a home you can afford and living a lifestyle that is below your means and not funded by credit cards are all necessities if you want to boost your savings. MONITOR YOUR PORTFOLIO: There's no need to obsess over every movement of the Dow. Instead, check your portfolio on occasion or assign a trusted asset management team to provide this service. Rebalance your asset allocation to keep on track with your plan. MAX OUT YOUR OPTIONS: Take advantage of every savings opportunity that comes your way. Make the maximum contribution to tax-deferred savings plans and then open up a taxable account too. Don't let any chance to save get away.
There's no need to obsess over
EVERY
movement of the Dow.
BusinessLife - March 2017
11
TAX-RETURNS: Every month you contribute several mandatory contributions, you will see them on your pay slip, example: Income Tax and National Insurance Contributions, utilize these avenues. File your tax returns and take advantage of these opportunities! HAVE PATIENCE: The power of compounding takes time, so invest early, invest often and accept that the road to riches is often long and slow. With that in mind, the sooner you get started, the better your odds of achieving your goals.

THE RISE OF AN EMPIRE with Mark Chin
Mark Chin
Owner - New Town Bakery This young man was given the mantle from his uncle, George Chai, to run the family bakery. He has taken it from the small franchise that it was and is now selling his baked products on the international scene.
WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO RUN THE FAMILY BAKERY? I usually worked in the bakery on summer holidays, so I knew the business background.
My wife is also an Entrepreneur whose family had a Bakery
business, hence, this business was a natural choice for us. WHAT WAS THE GREATEST CHALLENGE YOU FACED WHILE OPERATING A BAKERY IN JAMAICA? To enforce and train staff to maintain food standards, customer service etc. WHAT INVESTMENT TIPS WERE PASSED DOWN TO YOU FROM OTHER FAMILY MEMBERS? My uncle always kept me grounded by reminding me to stick with a consistent investment style, as impulsive behaviour can lead to detrimental decisions. Keep in mind that there are many ways of being successful but once you find your comfortable style, the key is sticking with it. My wife also told me to be positive about the future, more than look on a company’s past, look towards its future plans, and make your choices on the company’s future, your natural instincts will help with these decisions also.

ON THE ROAD WITH
MegaBoss with Dwayne Taylor
WHY MEGABOSS, WHERE DID THIS NAME COME FROM? I was working back and forth with the kiosk at MegaMart and my co-workers at the SSL head office used to always tell me to bring back doughnuts from MegaMart for them because I frequented there almost everyday. One day they just called me MegaBoss and it just stuck with me. WHAT DOES MEGABOSS DO ON A DAILY BASIS? I follow up on the prospect list from each kiosk that the representatives have submitted and I ensure that the persons that have signed up at the kiosk are contacted and their accounts opened. I also ensure that the updates between the head office and the kiosks are communicated and followed through. Additionally, from time to time, I visit the kiosk locations to ensure that procedures are being executed at the optimal quality. Finally, I also oversee the recruitment of SSL Kiosk Representatives for the kiosks. HOW MANY BRANCHES ARE DISTRIBUTED ACROSS THE ISLAND? They are 4 locations across the island. One in Megamart Waterloo (Kingston), Portmore (St.Catherine), Mandeville (Manchester) and Montego Bay (St.James). HOW DOES A MEGAMART KIOSK WORK? IF I WERE TO WALK INTO MEGAMART RIGHT NOW AND WALK UP TO A KIOSK, WHAT WOULD THE PROCESS BE LIKE? We have the visual stimulation from our monitors that we have strategically placed at the adjacent to the kiosk. These display marketing material from SSL. Fortunately, the kiosk at the Waterloo location is between two (2) high traffic outlets (Western Union & National Commercial Bank). The representatives take advantage of persons standing in these long lines to propose the Money Managers product. We keep track of prospects with the SSL Lead Application that collects prospect information. After the information is collected, the follow up process begins.

SSL seeks to create efficiency for its clients across the island. To facilitate that, we created the SSL Kiosks that have been positioned across the island that collects information from prospective clients, who may not have the time to come into the main branch. Dwayne Taylor is the “MegaBoss” behind this entire initiative maintaining the daily functioning and motivation of all the different sites. He breaks down his role for us here.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF BEING THE MEGABOSS? I just love to sell, SSL products that is. I love knowing that I am offering a quality product to persons. I love engaging persons and I love the responsibility of holding such a major product. WHY SHOULD PERSONS GET A MONEY MANAGER'S ACCOUNT? WHAT ARE BENEFITS OF INVESTING WITH SSL WITH THIS PARTICULAR PACKAGE FOR THE AVERAGE SHOPPER OF MEGAMART? It is a complete and affordable product. It can help the average man build wealth and break the financial glass ceiling that a single income provides. It's a way to multiply on the pre existing savings that they may be holding in a bank account. It consists of Jamaican securities which supports the entire “BUY JAMAICAN, BUILD JAMAICA” movement. WHAT IS YOUR VISION FOR THE SSL MEGAMART KIOSKS? I envision the MM Kiosks as a channel to reach people who genuinely believe they have no chance or opportunity to make money except through their regular 9-5 job or a partner plan. My vision is to avail a simplistic, accessible and convenient service to every Jamaican at MegaMart locations removing any and all misconceptions about investing. I want for SSL to be on the lips of Jamaicans when considering their financial options.
