Public Township Roads Meeting Running The Sees Great Attendance Distance

By Cameron Colwell On Tuesday, October 10 the Township Public Services Commission (PSC) held a public meeting at Township Hall to discuss concerns and future maintenance plans of our public roads. At the meeting PSC proposed $8,896,000 of high priority pavement repair work the 8 following roads - West River, East River, Meridian, Church, Bellevue, South Pointe, Ferry, Horsemill, and Parke Lane. (See photograph on page 6 of highlighted priority areas.) The PSC stated that the likely funding source for vital road maintenance would have to be a future Township property tax increase. This is due to the very limited amount of money available from Wayne County, which does not collect local property tax revenue for road and bridge maintenance. Wayne County’s main sources of funding for repair work projects are the State of Michigan and See PUBLIC, page 6

TELESCOPING THE TOWNSHIP

Several Grosse Ile women helped make up a record-breaking crowd of Rosie, the Riveters, on Sat., Oct. 14 at the Eastern Michigan University Convocation Center. The previous Guinness world record of Rosies in their overalls and red polka-dotted bandanas had been set in Richmond, CA but Michigan’s total of 3,755 beat the record. Rose Ellison, Bert Urbani, and Pam Frucci drove By Pamela A. Frucci up together and had an official photo taken at the Convocation Center. They joined the huge crowd of Rosies that included ages six weeks to 110 years old. Especially being honored were 58 original Rosies. Others in attendance from the Island were Betsy Kantz and Linda Tilley, who were there with four generations of her family. Most of the attendees were honoring the memory of the original Rosies who joined the war effort during WWII by working in the factories to replace the men who had gone to war, Pam Frucci’s grandmother out in Seattle, WA had been a Rosie working in a Boeing airplane factory in the 40s and would walk to the bus stop with her lunch pail and overalls. MUD MAT IN PLACE AT THE GROSSE ILE HISTORICAL SOCIETY’S CUSTOMS HOUSE The mat in front of the door of the Customs House needed replacement since the old one wouldn’t let water run through it and the paint on the porch had peeled off. Now a new one is in its place. The mat may be new, but its contents are old…It was bought by the Grosse Ile Historical Society from Cass Community Social Services which has a large warehouse on Rosa Parks Avenue in Detroit. There the agency puts the homeless to work cutting up thrown away tires into strips. Then they decorate the mats with colorful plastic dividers the color of your choice - and sells them as a money maker. ( Note: The

Jack Fruccis have one with raspberrycolored dividers to match their front door.) Cass Community Social Services not only provides jobs for the homeless, but their founder Rev. Faith Fowler received the President’s Award from Keep Michigan Beautiful at their annual award luncheon in Lansing October 20. Their agency also designs and builds Tiny Homes on three blocks of vacant lots in Detroit and rents to formerly homeless men and women, low income seniors, and students who have aged out of foster care. Each 250-500 square foot home is attractive and sits on a 30 x 100 foot lot. In addition to helping the people, the Tiny Homes are repopulating what was once a deserted and blighted neighborhood. After seven years of paying rent and taxes, the residents can become homeowners. THE GROSSE ILE MUSICALE OPENED THEIR 86th SEASON OF PROGRAMS ON OCT. 27 One of the oldest organizations on the Island, the Grosse Ile Musicale’s first program of their 86th season took place at the G.I. Presbyterian Church at 1 p.m., Fri., Oct. 27 with a program entitled “Singing and Swinging.” It featured a vocal group of 14 singers from Henry Ford College in Dearborn directed by Kevin Dewey, music professor at the college. Kevin not only directed the group called “Blue Fusion,” but accompanied them on the piano and even sang one number. The vocal group was followed by dancers from the Academy of Dance on Macomb. Now open to both men and offIslanders since 2005, the Musicale formerly was exclusively for women of the Island. The board of directors decided at their Oct. 27 meeting to invite anyone with a free Friday afternoon to join the group to hear good music and enjoy refreshments after the program. The board is considering providing a nursery for children, if needed. The next program is at 1 p.m. Nov. 10 at the Grosse Ile Presbyterian Church; and the program is Dr. Hans Martin Werner on the cello who also whistles classical music. He will treat the listeners to a sample of this unusual talent. A single membership in the

Musicale is $40 and $60 for a couple. Interested prospective members should contact Membership Committee chair Becky Myrick at (734) 692-5953. LOCAL ARTIST AND POET IS INVITED TO ARTPRIZE NINE Mono d’Angelo, who resides on Stout and worked for Ford’s, now in his retirement has been involved in painting and poetry. Mono has also written a novel based on the life of his parents who met in Italy when his dad served in WWII. At one time Mono served as president of the Michigan Poetry Society and his poems have been printed in national publications as well as Grosse Ile Alliance for the Arts booklets Island Voices I and II. With only selected artists asked to display at ArtPrize, the prestigious art show that takes over Grand Rapids in the early fall, now in its ninth year, Mono’s art work was on display for the thousands of attendees to view. Although not a winner of the grand prize, the following art received the top prizes equaling thousands of dollars: a portrait of Abraham Lincoln, Heartside Community Meal, and Red Dirt Rug.

When a quilter from Beulah, MI won $250,000 one year and repeated earning the top prize two years later, the ArtPrize Committee determined this would not be possible in the future. G. I. HARDWARE EARNS 2017 BEAUTIFICATION AWARD Every year at the end of the growing season, the Island Beautification Committee recognizes businesses along Macomb whose grounds are litter and weed free and have planted flowers. They receive a colorful decal for their efforts to place in their window which states “This business is helping to keep Macomb Street blooming and beautiful.” Although the Grosse Ile Hardware missed out in 2016, it was awarded a decal in 2017 for their hanging baskets out in front and a colorful array of tall growing wildflowers that bloomed all summer in the back, sides, and front of the store. Owner Ray Biddle says it’s a Scott product that comes with its own seeds in mulch and the deer don’t touch the plants. Sounds like a product that should be popular with gardeners!

Monsters On Macomb Street By Dawn Stone It was a pretty chilly morning but that did not deter the faithful parade goers from coming decked out in their costumes. For the children there was candy at stake and a little frost wasn’t going to stop them! There were many adults dressed up enjoying the fun too. It was a great time for our Macomb street businesses to interact with the community and show what they had to offer while spreading some Halloween cheer. The parade went from the high school up Macomb street to Meridian, then the kids were able to trick or treat at the local businesses on their way back. There was a display from monsters to princesses and everything in between. It’s a time where we can see that we have some awfully talented and creative people living here who love to have a venue to show off some creativity, and have some fun with their neighbors.

Getting Ready for Winter Fun The trees are finally changing into their fall colors and our island is particularly beautiful – as is most of Michigan. With autumn in the air I can’t help but reflect on Saturday’s ‘Hooray for Halloween’ parade on Macomb Street. The morning was a bit chilly and breezy, but it was probably the best attended By Brian Loftus Halloween parade I can remember. Thanks to all the businesses and community groups who participated in Trick-or-Treat on Macomb; a lot of kids and their parents, including some grandparents, had a great time Saturday. Hooray for Halloween was the result of the coordination and hard work from both our Community Recreation director and our Downtown Development director, the commissions and volunteers. These groups are truly making a difference here on our island; don’t pass up an opportunity to thank them - especially Kim and Angela - for their efforts. Additionally, they do want to hear your suggestions for other events and improvements you would like to see happen in our downtown or anywhere on Grosse Ile. Moving on to other happenings in our neighborhood – still no news to report regarding the Wayne County bridge – I continually repeat the term Wayne County as they own, operate and maintain that bridge. While rumors abound as to what the status of inspection and repairs may be, I can not speculate and will only report the official information I receive. There are plenty of others out there who can voice any one of a number of opinions and, who knows – one of them may prove to be correct. What I can tell you is that we were told to

expect the inspection report at the end of September or early October; the latest information is continued monthly inspections through March of 2018. This may also change. In the mean time, we are doing all we can to minimize the impact of these inspections. Chief Porcarelli, Chief Murdock, Township Manager Reaume and I all coordinate with numerous agencies to make these closures as painless as possible. I will make two recommendations – if you haven’t already done this, get the GrosseIleConnect app for your smart phone and get a bridge pass for the toll bridge. In both cases, you’ll be glad you did. Fun stuff on the horizon! First, Ladies Night on Macomb Street. As I was not allowed to attend the 2016 event I can’t tell you what to expect, but all reports were positive and Angela gets better and better at everything she does. Planned for November 10th, watch for notices on the app. Since Christmas is already being heavily marketed, I am pleased to announce the Historical Society’s Christmas Boutique. The Opening Gala will be held on Friday, November 24th from 12 - 6 PM, you should receive a flyer in the mail with more information soon. Over 30 local artisans will have unique craft items that you won’t find anywhere else – remember my caveat “if they don’t have it, you don’t need it. This is also the Society’s largest fundraiser, so you can feel good about shopping close to home and supporting a very worthwhile organization. I hope to see you there. Let me close by wishing all of you a memorable Thanksgiving with family and friends. Best wishes to all, Brian Loftus Supervisor

PUBLIC Continued from page 1 Federal government. Numerous citizens attended the meeting, and many provided comments about the urgency of fixing Island roads on which they regularly travel. Some even expressed concerns of safety, on narrower more deteriorated roads. Some residents suggested the need for the Township to prioritize spending on roads over other budget items. The current Township Boardapproved Township Budget for the 2017-2018 Fiscal Year projects spending down (“using prior year resources”) the Reserve Balance (i.e., Township’s savings account) by approximately $200,000 in order to balance the budget, so there is currently no surplus funding available for major road improvements. Bill Costick, Public Service Commision Chairman, thanked attendees for their useful input, and was overjoyed with the attendance of the meeting. He claimed it was one of the best attended meetings that the PSC has had on the issue

of road maintenance in years. The PSC’s primary goal is to improve Grosse Ile’s vital infrastructure, and to accomplish the goal in a manner financially manageable way. You could tell by the informative discussion that Members of the PSC

had invested a considerable amount of time in ranking community transportation needs. They will continue to examine solutions to the problem, and explore new options. The Commission provided a document from Wayne County, that

detailed their top 100 priority road improvement projects for 2018. None of the mentioned projects involved Grosse Ile. The only major project Wayne County may consider performing on the Island during 2018 repairs to the Wayne County Bridge. Keep in mind that the inspections still haven’t been finished. So as of this time the County has no estimated budget on what the repairs will cost. This November’s ballot for Township General Election did not feature a tax increase for roads, so the so the earliest a new millage could be considered by local voters is next year.

Grosse Ile Police Open House By Dawn Stone On October 14 the Grosse Ile Police Department opened their doors and had a day to interact with the community in a fun and interesting way. Officers manned several small stations throughout the department so kids and adults could get some first hand experiences. The event was a huge success and there was information on many topics that affect us here on Grosse Ile. Julie Cortis, the animal control officer was busy with her displays and information about the coyote issue that so many are concerned about. They had a station where the kids could learn some first aid that was also very well attended. It was very entertaining watching the kids apply gauze wraps on the officers with such focus and intent! People were able to walk through the jail area, see how fingerprints are done, and even were able to sit in some of the police vehicles. They also could see armor and marine vehicles up close. This was such a wonderful event to foster positive interaction; and for children to see police on a more personal level. They experienced an outstanding attendance, indicated by the fact that they had ran out of the 300 gift bags they had put together for the children.

VOICE OF DEMOCRACY:

“And the winner is ... By David L. Dyer It is my pleasure to announce the winner of the VFW’s annual essay writing contest “The Voice of Democracy.” It is none other than Jessica Schutt. Jessica won the Patriotic Pen contest two years ago as a middle school eighth grader. She went on to win 1st place at the District competition and finally fourth at the State level. This years theme is “American History: Our Hope for the Future.” So once again let’s get behind Jessica and wish her the best as she again goes on to the District level in January. That winner goes on to the State finals and that winner goes on to Washington, DC for the Nationals where the ultimate $30,000 scholarship is awarded. Judging for this years Patriotic Pen contest was not completed at press time. They will be announced in the next issue of the Grosse Ile Grand.

VETERAN’S DAY – 2017 By David Dyer In the year of 1918 at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month an armistice was declared between the Allied Forces and Germany which ended World War One, which was also known as the “Great War” or “The War to end all Wars.” The following year President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day. World War Two (1941 – 1945) brought about the greatest mobilization of our military forces in our nation’s history. Over 16 million served and another 5.7 million served in the Korean War (1950 – 1953. President Eisenhower signed legislation striking the word Armistice in favor of Veterans. In 1954 November 11 became the day to honor veterans of all wars. The next development unfolded in 1968. Congress passed the uniform holiday bill. This was an attempt to create three day weekends to encourage tourism, and travel. Washington’s Birthday, Memorial Day, Veteran’s Day and Columbus Day were now celebrated on Mondays. Veteran’s Day was set as the fourth Monday in October. Much confusion ensued. Many States disapproved of the change and continued to observe Veteran’s on the original date. In 1975 as it became evident that Veteran’s Day carried historical and patriotic significance to so many, President Ford signed a new law returning the observance of Veteran’s Day back to November 11 and it remains so today. Veteran’s Day is not to be confused with Memorial Day which is the fourth Monday in the month of May. Memorial Day honors service members who died in service as a result of injuries incurred during battle, while Veteran’s Day pays tribute to all veterans living or dead and especially gives thanks to all veterans who served their country honorably during war and/or peace time. Notice the year of 1975 was the last year mentioned in that short history. The Paris Peace Accords were signed by America and North Vietnam in January 1973. This

ended America’s involvement in Vietnam. All prisoners were released and all Americans were withdrawn from Vietnam within the next sixty days. Fighting again broke out and it resulted in a victory for the North Vietnamese in 1975. In all there were over 58,000 American deaths in Vietnam and over 150,000 wounded. Twenty five per cent of all those that served in Vietnam were drafted. Those were the ones that were forced to play that lottery game that eavery American male was required to play after reaching their eighteenth birthday. They were issued a card which contained a number. If their number was chosen and they were not enrolled in college they had three options. They could leave the country, they could have risked being jailed or they could become a member of the US Army. Most of them chose the latter and were taken from their families, their jobs and whatever else was going on in their life. They were then sent to basic training for eight weeks and after another eight weeks of advanced training they were sent many thousands of miles from home to fight in a war in a country they may never even knew existed. More than 19,000 of them or thirty percent of all those killed in Vietnam were drafted. Those are the ones that would never be known as veterans and as the years continue to pass they are mostly forgotten. This Veteran’s Day I ask you to reach out to a veteran. They are easy to spot. You don’t have to personally know the individual, the uniform they are wearing represents your freedom. You will never know the feeling until you have done it. Extend your arm, look him/her in the eye, grasp his/her hand and utter these words: ‘Welcome home my friend and thank you for your service.’ Today I hear those words over and over. It is like music to my ears. I never get tired of hearing them. It has more than made up for the way I was treated upon returning home from Vietnam in 1971. One more thing as I close, at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month take a special moment to remember all veterans who have honorably served our country. We must never forget: “Freedom isn’t free.”

Culinary Capers

If you will be the designated cook for Thanksgiving dinner, you may want to consider using one of my three favorite simply delicious — and deliciously simple — recipes for the holidays — or anytime. The first is for a broccoli-stuffing casserole that can be put together By Evelyn Cairns in the morning, refrigerated and reheated about 30 minutes before serving. My family loves it. The second recipe is for a no-brainer molded gelatin salad combining canned whole cranberry sauce and crushed pineapple that takes only minutes to make. If you prefer homemade whole berry sauce, just add 1 cup of water and 1 cup of sugar to a 12-ounce package of berries and cook until the berries pop. I substitute orange juice for water, however. Cranberries are high in nutritional value and fiber and low in carbohydrates and calories and can be frozen for up to a year, according to the USDA. My third favorite recipe is for a pumpkin pie that has been on the label of Libby’s 100 percent canned pumpkin forever. If you don’t have a deep-dish pie pan, either discard the extra filling or bake it in custard cups or ramekins and serve it later with whipped cream. I confess that I haven’t made a pie crust from scratch since I attended a Pillsbury Bake-Off to write about a Downriver resident who was a contest finalist. I had never received a compliment on my crust until I began using the refrigerated product and have had many complements since. I usually roll the packaged dough a bit thinner, though, which makes it even flakier. BROCCOLI-STUFFING CASSEROLE 2 16-ounce bags frozen broccoli florets 4 tablespoons butter 4 tablespoons flour 2 cups milk 2 chicken bouillon cubes 1 cup water 6 tablespoons butter

2 cups Pepperidge Farms herbseasoned stuffing mix 2/3 cup chopped walnuts

Partially cook broccoli. Drain and place in 9x13-inch baking dish. In medium saucepan, blend 4 tablespoons butter, flour, milk and bouillon cubes; cook, whisking until mixture is thickened. Pour sauce over broccoli. Using same pan, heat water and 6 tablespoons butter; add stuffing mix and nuts, stir until fluffy, then spoon over broccoli and sauce. Bake at 350 degrees for 30-40 minutes. Casserole can be assembled in the morning, refrigerated and baked before serving. CRANBERRY-PINEAPPLE GELATIN MOLD 3-ounce package strawberryflavored gelatin 3-ounce package lemon-flavored gelatin 1 cup boiling hot water 1 cup cold water 12-ounce can whole cranberry sauce, stirred until smooth 8-ounce can undrained crushed pineapple Dissolve gelatin in hot water. Add cold water, cranberry sauce and crushed pineapple. Pour into gelatin mold, chill until firm and turn out on lettuce leaves. LIBBY’S FAMOUS PUMPKIN PIE ¼ cup granulated sugar ½ teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon cinnamon ½ teaspoon ginger ¼ teaspoon cloves 2 large eggs, beaten 15-ounce can Libby’s pumpkin 12-ounce can evaporated milk 1 unbaked 9-inch (4-cup volume) deep-dish pie shell Mix sugar, salt and spices in small bowl. Beat eggs in large bowl; then stir in pumpkin, sugar and spices. Gradually stir in evaporated milk. Pour into pie shell and bake at 425 degrees 15 minutes; reduce heat to 350 and bake 40-50 minutes longer or until a knife inserted near center comes out clean. Cool on wire rack for 2 hours. Serve immediately or refrigerate. Serve with whipped cream. HAPPY COOKING!

Feline Friendly Holiday Hints By Susan Palmer, The Cat Nanny Time! Time! Time! Oy! The holidays are heading home at warp speed. It’s time to celebrate family, friends and good food- with your favorite feline in the middle of the mix. Keeping kitty safe while we make merry takes a bit of knowledge, compassion and creativity. We’ll start in the kitchen. While preparing our fabulous feasts we wonder what’s safe for our fabulous feline who is certainly “helping” (curled at your feet - prime tripping position as well as a great spot for dropped goodies, curled in your mixing bowl or stretched out lounging on the middle of your recipe.) Cooked turkey is a favorite and is safe if you allow only white meat, no skin or bones, and no more than an ounce. Very deadly foods include onions (cooked or raw), garlic, chocolate, alcohol, coffee, tea, energy drinks, grapes and raisins to name a few. If there is any doubt that kitty has ingested something, do not hesitate to act. The pet poison control telephone

number is 1-800-213-6680. To make our homes more festive, we love to decorate. While so doing, we must consider the curious cat. Poinsettias, though lovely, can cause gastrointestinal upset for kitty, but rarely, unless a large amount was eaten, will cause death. Much more dangerous are the very toxic Holly and Mistletoe, Lilies, Daffodils and Amaryllis (aka Belladonna, St. Joseph Lily, Cape Belladonna and Naked Lady). Even the dried plants, berries and bulbs will cause severe reactions, even death. Another enticement is anything that dangles or drags along the floor. In a cat’s eye, all things are toys and fair game. Tinsel, string, yarn, ribbon, extension cords and stringed lights can be deadly. Cats have tiny hooks on their tongues that curve inward; hence the sandpaper texture. Once an item is engaged, it will work its way down the throat and cannot easily be dislodged. Candles are also a concern. A See FELINE page 17

A&R Music is proudly celebrating 40 years in business this year. The business began when Business Partners, Atam Bedikian and Richard Cieslowski, noticed a need for an additional music store in the area. They sell a large variety of musical instruments, printed music, and various music supplies. They even have a knowledgeable teaching staff in all instruments from a to z. Richard Cieslowski is most proud of the impact they have had on Southeast Michigan. “Many of our original customers have even returned to introduce their children and grandchildren to the world of music through our store.” Their main focus is on supporting local school band programs in Southeast Michigan, this includes renting to beginning band students and visiting local band directors. Amongst their knowledgeable staff is an expert repair department that is second to none. Whether you are a starting student or a well versed musician, A&R Music promises to put your needs first. FROM THE GABLES

BRAVERY AND GRACE By Mark McPherson It is now November and in America the season of gratitude. This year as I consider the many things I have to be grateful for, I’m thinking well beyond myself, my family, and even my local world. In distantly related fashion, I’m thinking of two fellow human beings, one Canadian, the other American. And in particular here I’d like to give thanks for the courage of them both. The first of these is a musician and writer and singer you may or may not know. His name is Gord Downey. Renown in his own country across the river and much beyond it as the driving force behind a popular group with the wonderful name “The Tragically Hip,” Downey’s been respected and loved for his musical craft and his ardor for Canadian life. But two years ago Gord Downey revealed that he had an inoperable brain malignancy. He shared this sad news not for pity or for sympathy, but because he wanted his musical followers to know what he was up against. Also that until he could no longer fight his inevitable adversary, he intended to press on. That he said, is what we are meant to do. So he would write. He would sing. He would perform for his fans, literally singing himself into the night. And that he did do with bravery, until the cancer claimed him a few weeks ago. But it could not erase the name and voice and meaning of Gord Downey. Not for Canada. Not for the world. In a tragically similar vein, months ago we learned that Senator John McCain was once again being held hostage, this time by the same sort of dread disease that took Gord Downey. Nor has the Senator been shy about

the fact or what is likely to be his fate. But even as he was once imprisoned and tortured, physically and mentally, he does even now continue to battle courageously and with as much vigor as he can summon. And whether you like his politics or not, John McCain continues to fight for us all—for what he deems right for his nation. Also, let no one err in thinking that this brave man stands on the floor of his nation’s stage just to state a party agenda. He merely asks that we remember who we were—and who we are. Not as Republicans. Or Democrats. Or Christians. Or Muslims. Not as Black. Or White. Or as men or women. But as Americans. And as human beings. So at this time, this year, I offer my thanks for the likes of two men who, as Charles Dickens once stated, were and remain our “fellow travelers to the grave.” A poet and a politician. Odd bedfellows perhaps, but here twin spirits in valor and faith who’ve displayed a love for their respective countries which death itself cannot erase. Yes I am grateful for this world and for those who inhabit it. And I am thankful, this Thanksgiving, for the likes of the two individuals I have described here so briefly. Unwittingly perhaps, each of them are models for not only how we live our lives, but also perhaps the manner by which we may leave them. To me, both in their way are reminders to us all of the fact that while we may come into the world without courage, what a noble thing it would be to leave it with bravery and grace, love, and ideally, hope. Happy Thanksgiving, Grosse Ile.

FELINE Continued from page 17 feline’s magnificent moustache and fuzzy tail are extremely flammable and catch fire in less than a blink. My Jambalaya Jammicat took it in her mind to sniff the flame before I could place the candle in its hanger. She sported curled whiskers for a time. All candles should be put up and away from cavorting kitties. When family and friends visit, be aware of kitty’s whereabouts. As doors open, your pussycat companion may take it in its mind to explore the great outdoors- or maybe just to escape those rascally cousins. Peace of mind and peace of heart can be easily had by microchipping your pet or simply purchasing a safe break-away collar and identification tag. Happy Thanksgiving! Happy Hanukkah! Merry Christmas! Be safe!

Albin Account

Road Scholar by Gail Albin If you like to be royally taken care of, have fun, travel, learn new things and meet new people, read on…… Jeanette Gronda from Grosse Ile is a retired RN. For years, she was the Clinical Director for Henry Ford Home Health Care. She had heard about Elderhostel, now called Road Scholar, from a friend who had been on several trips. Jeanette likes mixing education and travel. Road Scholar is a non-profit American Organization that provides education and travel experiences, primarily for older adults. Their goal is to help adults learn, discover and travel. The learning adventures they host open minds to new ideas and aim to deepen the understanding of oneself and of the world’s peoples, places, cultures, history and environments. A true university of the world, not-for-profit Road Scholar’s meaningful – often transformational – educational adventures engage people for whom learning is the journey of a lifetime. She sent for their catalog and went to her first Road Scholar, Finding Your Roots Genealogy. This was presented in Sturgis, Michigan with field trips to Ft. Wayne Library in Indiana. Programs can be found in all 50 states and 150 countries

worldwide. Each trip last a few days with around 25 people from all over. Local Experts come and give talks, demonstrations, and lead discussions. There is enough free time to visit with others and explore the location. The locations are exceptionally impressive in their history and beauty; and always host activities that range from easy to quite challenging. Recently Jeanette flew to her second Road Scholar called, Looking on the Bright Side. It was in Potosi, Missouri at Trout Lake Lodge located on 5,000 acres in the Eastern Ozarks. There she found lakes, hills, and breath taking natural beauty. The well-liked program featured “Humor and wacky fun”. Participants bonded early on. There was first-rate treatment, tasty and plentiful food, comfortable lodging, great speakers and special entertainment each evening. They sang, enjoyed getting to know one another, exchanged jokes and laughed all week. She liked the pontoon boat rides, horseback riding, riflery, after dark zip line, and bonfire with smores. The group came as strangers and parted as friends. Look up: roadscholar.com There is something for everyone.

Harvest for the Homeless Holiday Dazzle & Dreams

By Pat Andrews Everyday thousands of people go hungry and are homeless. That is right here - in Wayne County - and a growing problem that is in need of a solution. A coalition of local churches and ChristNet Services have answered the challenge and are looking for help. Once again, they are turning to fundraising by inviting Downriver residents to partake of a meal, listen to an inspiring speaker, purchase auction items and learn about a campaign to operate a permanent shelter. ChristNet is the only emergency homeless shelter in Wayne County. From October to June it provides a place of safety for mainly a male population and a growing number of women and children. A building in Taylor has been purchased and the renovation $400,000 price tag is being tackled through Holiday Dazzle and Dreams/ a Harvest for the Homeless dinner on November 17. Currently the program is operated from a temporary site, The Church of the Nazarene, also in Taylor. The featured speaker is Father Bob McCabe, pastor of St. Pius X Catholic Church in Southgate. He is known for his talents as a photographer and the ability to put a face on those who live on the street. His camera has been able to tell a story with dignity and grace and his talk, “Winters on the Street” will inspire all in attendance. Too often, Father McCabe believes, that when it comes to poverty, we can’t find a way to end it, but many are not trying to do anything. Centers like ChristNet are crucial to the community and can offer a safe, cost effective and realistic way to provide overnight housing and services. Doors to the Orlando Familia Banquet Center will open at 6 p.m. for a social hour, followed by dinner at 7, dancing and bidding on auction items. Tickets are $50 per person or $450 for a reserved table of 10. There are sponsorship opportunities ranging from $100 to $10,000. Linda Cleaver and Linda Dickman are chairing the event. For tickets they can be reached at 734-558-9912 and 734-675-5563 or ljcleaver@yahool.com; and 734-675-0893 and lindickman@wowway.com. There are sponsorship opportunities ranging from $100 to $10,000. The Downriver program of providing shelter and meals to the homeless began more than 25 years ago and began as a grassroots effort providing emergency beds to mostly men. As mentioned, the statistics have changed over the years. Presently, nearly 25 percent of the requests come from women; many of them with children. Efforts are made to find schooling for any long-term child residents, according to the directors. In 1993 there were just eight participating churches, now nearly 60 have signed on as participants. As meals are also provided and all services are provided at no cost to the guest/client, it takes the human touch to execute a caring program. The unique concept allows for different communities to share the responsibility for housing and members of those churches also help provide food, clothing and donate thousands of hours of volunteer time. A spokesperson for ChristNet said that the program has a small paid staff and is supported through grants, individual donations, and benefits. ACTIVE COMMUNITY MEMBER PASSES AWAY ON OCT. 22 An active member of whatever organization he belonged to, Arthur Koester passed away in his new location in Portage, MI at age 87 after spending much of his married life on Grosse Ile. Art served as chair of the Island Beautification Committee from the midseventies to 2015 when his health took a turn for the worst. Residents driving by Four Corners often saw Art planting By Pamela A. Frucci and weeding the planted areas. On the NW corner is a large rock with his name on a plaque signifying his work there; and on the opposite side, the SW corner, the IBC members have erected a whirling piece of art representing a bird in flight with a plaque soon to be placed on the artwork thanking Art, their former chair, for all his service to the community. Other organizations he was active in were the Knights of Columbus, the Kiwanis Club…he served as president of both the Grosse Ile chapter and of Division 5… In 1994 he was named Citizen of the Year by the Rotary Club. Art and Clare, his wife of 63 years, were also responsible for the planting and care of the Memorial Garden at the municipal airport. He did the vegetable garden at Sacred Heart which supplied fresh food for the hungry, and was treasurer of Keep Michigan Beautiful and served as president in 2003-4.

Volleyball The volleyball team has had an outstanding year as well. They team started out the season with a huge win against SMCC at home in the fifth game. SMCC is the favorite to win the Huron League usually every year so it was a huge win for the girls. The team got second at the Wyandotte Tournament by losing to Cabrini in a tough match. The team got second as well at the Carlson Tournament when they lost to Churchill who is a very good team. They didn’t start great in the Bedford Tournament but beat Churchill and eventually lost to Chelsea. They beat Riverview in a double header twice and got third at the News Herald. They got first in the Huron League Tournament. The team won their first game against Airport but lost the second and ended up getting second in the Huron league. Districts is next up for the girls as they face off against Airport once again. “This season everyone has great chemistry and are really close which makes it more fun to play and the more fun we are having the harder we work. They made it all the way to the Regional Finals where they lost to Detroit Country Day. They went undefeated all the way to Regionals which is an outstanding accomplishment. “Of all the three seasons I’ve played high school soccer, this year has definitely been the best yet. I’ve had so much fun with this team and we’ve competed at a really high level all year. It’s disappointing that we couldn’t win the regional title, but that will just be additional motivation to be stronger next year,” stated junior Jacob Sawicki. It feels great to have made it to states again and I am extremely excited,” stated Erickson. The Grosse Ile boys cross country also had another great year. The team won the Huron League Title and finished third at Regionals. Since they finished third at Regionals that means they qualified as a team for the state finals. Another accomplishment worth mentioning was their second place finish within their

division at the Wayne County Championship. This will be the third year in a row that the team has made it to the state finals. James Gedris was first in Wayne County, the Huron League meet, and the Region and Area meet. Junior Matt Graver was awarded all Wayne County, all Region, all League, and all Area. Chad Donahue and Aaron Amaya were both also awarded with all league honors. “This season was a ton of fun, our team has accomplished a lot and we’re all excited to be going to the state finals for the third year in a row,” said junior James Gedris.

by Alex Melhorn The Grosse Ile Cheer team had a special gift for a 16 year-old special needs girl, Miranda Cowan, when they invited her to join them on the sideline for the game against Huron on October 6. Kathryn Kosztowny, senior, cheerleader Bailey Emero, junior, and the all the Devils cheerleaders helped set it up along with cheer coaches Angela Raithel and Nicki Scott. Miranda, whose brother Harrison Cowan plays on the team, has always loved cheering on the team from the stands. Every home game she loves to stand as close to the cheerleaders as possible, so that she can cheer alongside them. The team decided to make her dream come true and got her suited up for the game against Huron, so she could join them right along the football field. While Miranda was cheering she was very proud of doing five cartwheels in a row. Miranda said the the experience was “amazing”, and that it really was her dream come true.

Much Ado About Will is a collection of Shakespearean scenes and monologues exploring some of the best of the bard’s work. This charming entertainment demonstrates the amazing versatility of the greatest playwright in the English language. “Neither age can wither him nor custom stale his infinite variety.” The show is bookended by the hysterical antics of the rustics from A Midsummer Night’s Dream, with a delightful journey through mistaken identity, murder, love and war in between. The high school company of actors presents a dazzling display of comedy and pathos with some of Shakespeare’s most famous characters such as Romeo, Juliet, Hamlet, Macbeth, Puck, Cleopatra, Portia, Bottom, Richard III, Henry V, as well as some of his less-seen characters such as Joan of Arc, the infant princess Elizabeth, and the three witches. This clever tour de force manages to be both a wonderful introduction to the marvelous world of William Shakespeare and a full-course meal for Shakespearean veterans. Director Krista Schafer Ewbank explained “It’s such a joy to watch these students wake up to the wonders of Shakespeare. At first I think they thought I was crazy when

Start your holiday shopping now!

I asked them to scan the meter of the poetry and lay on the floor and explore the emotion in the vowel sounds. But Shakespeare puts it all right there in the text, and the actors are rewarded when they do the work and figure out what’s really going on. We translate the Elizabethan English into modern prose as an exercise. And then we have fun making it all come to life. Shakespeare has all the good stuff: love and death, murder and mayhem, deceit and despair. It’s really fun! I’m so impressed with the work they’re doing, and I’m sure the audience will be, too!” The show is directed by Krista Schafer Ewbank, a Grosse Ile resident with over 20 years of experience in professional theatre. Ewbank directed at the High School for the first time last year with both The Hound of the Baskerville and Little Women. Toni Mann of Grosse Ile is assisting. The show will be performed at the Grosse Ile High School Auditorium Friday, November 17th at 7 pm and Saturday November 18th at both 2pm and 7pm. Tickets are $10, or $8 for students and seniors. The show runs for approximately 90 minutes with an intermission.

by Alex Melhorn The Devils faced off against Milan at home on October 6 for a Huron League game. The Devils got crushed last year by Milan so the boys tried to get revenge from last year. Right out of the gate, Milan put the pressure on the Devils by going up 23-0 in the first quarter. The Devils could not come back from the deficit of the first quarter. Luke Harwood had a good game with 72 yards rushing and 52 yards receiving and one receiving touchdown. Milans experienced team was too much for the young Devils as they fell 51-21. On Friday, October 13 the Devils played the biggest game of the year against their rivals, the Riverview Pirates. Grosse Ile won the rivalry last year at home but this year it was a little tougher because the game was at Riverview. The battle for the Colvin Cup was dominated by Riverview for the most of the game. They jumped out to a 14-0 lead early in the first quarter but the Devils fought back to tie the game at 14-14. After the Devils put up 14 in the first

quarter, they didn’t score for the rest of the game while Riverview put up 21 unanswered points. The final score of the game was 35-14 as the Pirates took the Colvin Cup back to Riverview. The Devils faced the University of Detroit Jesuit in their last game of the season. It was a non-conference game which means it did not count for the teams Huron League record. UD is from the catholic league which is one of the premier leagues in the state. The team knew this was probably going to be their toughest

game of the year and it was senior night so the team was ready for one last battle. The Devils defense wasn’t the best in the beginning but their offense was stepping it up. At halftime the score was 32-16 UD on top. The Devils had a huge task of containing 3-star recruit, senior Elijah Collins, who committed to Michigan State University earlier in the year. They did a good job for the most part on him but the rest of the UD team played a very good game offensively. In the end the Devils couldn’t stop UD and the game ended with a score of 46-30.

It was a very good effort by the team as they put up the most points they have scored in a game all season. The Grosse Ile Devil’s 2017 football season was a tough one. The team finished tied for sixth in the Huron league. “This season had a rough start, and if people were to look at our record they’d think it never got better. We grew and overall we played better at the end of the season. It was a fun season, we had some good memories. This season really opened up our young teams eyes. There is a lot of talent on the upcoming team and we have a bright future,” stated sophomore linebacker and offensive lineman Johnny Blanzy. The team was very inexperienced and also very young which was a big key in the Devil’s failure to make the playoffs. There were a lot of ups and downs throughout the year but the team definitely got better since their first game. Coach John Bodner will try to organize the young team he has to make them into a playoff contender next year.

YOUR BETTER HEALTH

Stop Hurting Your Gut And Start Healing It! In this second part on the topic of digestive issues, our focus will be on ways to naturally heal the digestive system. As I mentioned in the October issue, it is estimated that 70,000,000 people suffer from one or more of the following conditions every single day; heartburn, acid By Dr. Michael Concessi, reflux, GERD a Grosse Ile resident (gastro-esophageal reflex disorder), Leaky Gut Syndrome, indigestion, bloating, constipation, IBS (irritable bowel syndrome). Most of these conditions have developed over time as a result of the Standard American Diet or (SAD). It’s SAD, but true! Our diet today is mainly fast foods, highly processed foods, high sugar, high fat, highly refined carbohydrates and low fiber. So the answer should be simple. Just stop eating out and start making everything you eat from scratch like grandma did. Problem solved! Wait, it can’t be that simple, right? Well, actually it’s not. In today’s fast placed society, with most people juggling multiple jobs, sporting events for kids and other activities, time is tight and many of us are just way too stressed out already. We need to be practical about this. Fast food is here to stay, but we as consumers have a lot to say and purchasing power to back it up. We are beginning to see changes being made already. Fast food chains and restaurants are adding healthy alternatives to their menus, such as salads, fruits, lower salt and lower fat items to mention a few. Groceries store are selling more organic fruits, vegetables, dairy, fish, and meats. We are also seeing more items that are antibiotic free, non-GMO, and with no high fructose corn syrup. These changes are the direct result from you the educated consumers demanding and making smarter choices for yourself and families. Our digestive system road to recovery will not be in many cases

a quick fix. There is no magic pill, even though the advertising by the pharmaceutical companies would lead you to believe this. The problem is many of the so-called cures are BandAid care, covering up the symptoms until they get worse, at which time you are ready for the next level of meds or even worse surgery. The first step is to change the SAD diet into HAPPY diet for the gut. A good way to do this is by switching to a diet more in line with the Mediterranean Diet. The books I recommend are Low Fat Lies by Vigilante & Flynn and for those that are diabetic, The GI Mediterranean Diet by Lindberg. The second step is to get your acid reflux under control. The next time you are experiencing acid reflux, try taking 1-2 tablespoons of raw apple cider vinegar. If after 10-15 minutes you notice a reduction in the burning, then the problem is more likely a lack of acid or digestive enzymes in the stomach. Remember you must treat your digestive system up-stream first and then work your way down. This means fix the stomach first, then the small intestine and finally the large intestine. In my office I go after the stomach, then the liver and gallbladder, then small intestine and finally the large intestine, in that order. Once the stomach issues are addressed, the next step I would recommend would be a digestive cleanse to aid in the healing of the small intestine. There are a number of digestive cleanses on the market, be careful and do your research. If you have questions regarding digestive cleanses you can e-mail me or contact my office directly. Last, add probiotics to your diet for a healthy large intestine or colon. Remember healing will take time depending on the severity and length your symptoms have been occurring. Allow a minimum of 9-18 months for healing. In the next edition, I will be discussing the Frozen Shoulder. To contact me, please email me at dr.concessi@gi-grandnews.com

Small Business Saturday Is Night, Let Yourself ENJOY the Season - Shop SMALL By Peter Rose I begin this article on the road, writing to you from Chicago, soaking up the energy and passion of an industry sandbox that I’ve been able to play in for 45 years. We’re at one of the best trade shows we have the pleasure of attending, called STYLEMAX, for the women’s apparel industry. Over a four days, we see as much as we possibly can of the endless options we have to create a store that women want to shop in. While here, we get to take off all the other hats we wear in operating our shops, and focus nearly 100% on just one thing: Finding newness, inspiration, and excitement to share with the actual folks that look to us to share with them, back in Wyandotte. Buying for a clothing store is usually seen as romantic, exciting and fun, - all true. But, of course, it’s one of the scariest things we do as well. After all, the decisions we make result in merchandise deliveries that have to be right! While our skill sets are all about the ability to read the teal leaves pretty well, we have never yet been 100%. Not once have we had a season with no mistakes. The question is always about finding the mix that works, and putting it all together to tell stories to the people that like to see what we’ve brought them. If we guess wrong, we’ve just invested assets that are hard to recapture. Bad decisions are simply not an option! But it’s the hunt that excites and satisfies. After 45 plus years doing this gig for men’s and women’s apparel, it never gets old. Over a four day span, we try see as much as we can. We see a TON of product, select what we like the best at each stop, then take all that information back home to buy with many specific faces in mind. Individual people, not numbers. Things that will fly Downriver, not that are hot in L.A. or NYC. It is a science, AND an art. Make no mistake; it is exhilarating to see so much creativity, all thrown up to see what flies. We are overwhelmed each day in the market, sort it, and do it again. I don’t think I can really express how much we love this process, or how energizing it is.

The camaraderie of an industry in partnership is so rewarding, too. It’s not just the actual clothes being selected; it’s marketing and presentation ideas, event planning ideas, and new inspiration in the only real thing there is: Customer service that makes our stores compelling enough to flourish in an era where that has become a real challenge. We can pick out the coolest things EVER, the prettiest and most amazing things, items that we just KNOW people are going to love, but it all means nothing if folks don’t come visit us to see for themselves what we’ve brought to them. Or if people do come to explore and are not welcomed as much as they could be, or if they leave without sensing gratitude and appreciation. We have to be warm, personal AND professional, more than ever. This issue of The Grand carries us through the kick-off of the holiday season with the Small Business Saturday weekend after Thanksgiving. The Christmas season is vitally important for retailers of all sorts, none more so than Independents. The messages I have shared are all wrapped up (in pretty giftwrap!) in the messages of the season, in which we simply ask that if you CAN get it locally (whatever IT is), please DO. Take the pledge, make it conscious. Enjoy the warmth in shops that comprise the small business community of Downriver. In so doing, revel in the true satisfaction that comes from knowing you’re maximizing the impact of your shopping dollars, keeping three times more money circulating in our region than if you spend at national chains. That you’re keeping anything at all in the local economy compared to sending it all away through the internet - Thank you for that! Our little corner of the world this Downriver area - is special. We do band together, we do support each other. We know each other, we LIKE each other. As the holiday shopping season begins, it gives me great peace and calm to say Merry Christmas to one and all, sharing warmth regardless of the holiday you celebrate. Happy Thanksgiving, too!
