Grosse Ile Garden Club to present Island Fair Do you remember how practically everyone looked forward to the special end-of-summer state and county fairs? They were a time to celebrate the hard work that brought about a bountiful harvest. For years, the Grosse Ile Garden Club (GIGC) sponsored a judged Flower and Vegetable Exhibit, held in late summer, to include Island children and adults. To honor those time-honored special traditions, this summer, the Garden Club will sponsor the Island Fair on Saturday, Aug. 21, at the Centennial Farms, located at 25797 Third Street. The event is a throwback to Garden Club history, which began in 1927. This year’s Island Fair will be a “Home Town – Home Grown” experience. “The Grosse Ile Garden Club is SEE CLUB Page 3

FROM THE TOWNSHIP

No community is an island, or is it?

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Township officials (past and present), residents and coworkers for being a part of my 30-year career with the dale Township of Grosse reaume Ile serving as Planning Township and Code Enforcement Manager Officer, Community Development Director, and for the most recent 20 years, as the Township Manager. In 2003, current Clerk Ute O’Connor, former DPS Director Lorinda Beneteau, and myself gave a presentation at the Michigan Society of Planning Officials Conference on the Adaptive Re-use and Renovations of the current Township Hall. That year the conference was held on Mackinac Island and the theme of the conference was No Community is An Island. We all had a little chuckle about the theme. Nevertheless, I remember the presentation and my takeaway from the various conference sessions. Every community desires autonomy, but people do badly when they are isolated from others, and we need to be a part of a community to thrive. The fact is Grosse Ile Township is an Island that needs off Island services and interaction making it part of the mainland. Residents work, shop, play, seek healthcare and do many other things off Island. Pretending to live in a bubble will not promote communication and relatedness. A lot has changed in 30 years since I began my

excited to sponsor this event to celebrate our resilient community, local organizations, businesses and individuals,” said GIGC President Barb Carroll. Organizers say there will be something for everyone. The day will begin at 9 a.m. with a Salute to Our Veterans, followed by a Pet Parade, which may include dogs, cats, birds, lizards, fish, chickens, rabbits and more. The members of the Sacred Heart Knights of Columbus will be on hand to serve a cup of coffee and a roll. Guests may stay on as they will offer a full-menu lunch service. After the salute and parade, it will be time to wander through the beautiful grounds of Centennial Farms to enjoy a wide selection of local vendors, businesses and organizations. There will be a judged Flower and Vegetable Exhibit, an outstanding Art Exhibit and sale, a Perennial

career at Grosse Ile. Most notably, 30 years ago the vocal minority or “town criers” had to send a letter to the editor and hoped it would get published in the Friday Ile Camera weekly newspaper. Today social media can be a great tool when used wisely. Unfortunately, it is increasingly being used by those not interested in the facts or upset for not getting their way. True positive change comes from interpersonal communication not arguing from a keyboard. Unlike posters on social media, as a government official everything I say or do I must be accountable for. So please think for yourself and don’t let social media destroy you or mankind! Grosse Ile Township as a governmental entity has been a tremendous success, in my opinion, due to the caring and professional staff and the organizational structure as a General Law Township. As a General Law Township, Grosse Ile only has the authority granted to it under State Law, unlike a city or village that has a voter-approved charter. Grosse Ile has voter-approved millages, which means the taxes are resident approved and earmarked for a specific purpose. The funds collected for a specific purpose must be spent on that specific purpose. Your local government is doing what you want done. This stresses the importance of preparing your plan, aka the budget and following the plan. Drifting off the plan and chasing shiny metal objects will get you nowhere fast. It is important to focus on items that are geared toward the long-term success of the organization

and community, not items that could be considered the flavor of the day. There are currently 98 volunteers involved in committees and commissions which advise the Township Board and create additional opportunities for public input during the review process for any legislation. Most volunteers get involved as a way to participate and give back to the community they love. This positive community commission structure in the Township has proven to outweigh the negative. For the most part the right people are involved for the right reasons. Unfortunately, there are some occasional bumps in the road shadowed by political motives. We all need to remember that a community needs consensus and we must put our personal agendas aside and work together to achieve that. The past several pandemic years have been a tremendous challenge. I tell myself it has been the universe’s way of telling everyone to slow down and take a step back and remember what is important. The message could be the same over my 30 years of service at Grosse Ile. We are part of the whole, we need to remember to stick to a plan, and to appreciate the employees and volunteers whose product is service to the community, and be nice to and take care of each other. I have made many many wonderful friends during my career and feel honored to have served the community for over 30 years. Thank you, Grosse Ile!

Sale, a Silent Auction, a Community-Grown Gardens Market and products and/or information from a range of 35 vendors. Included will be Island Girls Honey, Sarafinaco Candles, Bootleggers Kombucha and much more. The Meijer Pie Eating contest will include up to 12 participants in two divisions: 7 to 12 years of age and 13 and older. Registration is on event day. Children will be invited to participate in old-time craft projects and games. They may even enjoy playing a game of Corn Hole. Adults may participate in the University of Michigan vs. Michigan State University challenge also. Attendees are invited to visit the Keep Michigan Beautiful Butterfly Garden. A special treat for children of all ages will be a visit to Cakes by Sweetypants or Kona Ice. There also will be an opportunity to learn about the changes and event opportunities happening at Westcroft Gardens. Westcroft is the oldest familyowned and -operated farm in Michigan – established on July 6, 1776. The gardens are currently owned by the seventh generation of Macomb descendants and

operated by the eighth generation. The Grosse Ile Historical Society will display artifacts to increase visitors’ knowledge of the Island’s heritage and encourage everyone to visit the museum on the corner of East River and Parkway – considered a must by local historians. Chief Roll and his group will sponsor a Native Americans in the Downriver Area information booth. The Community Grown Garden Market and a special vendor will display and explain Potawatomi seeds and planting techniques. Garden Club members send sincere gratitude to those supporting the effort: Michigan Garden Clubs, Gorno Ford, Meijer in Southgate, Lowes in Southgate, Reading Resources, Caruso Leadership, Grosse Ile Pet and Garden Center, Grosse Ile Bridge Company, The Jeffery Company, Island Athletic, Sacred Heart Knights of Columbus, Schutt Landscaping, P. Lukasik, Public Services Credit Union, Truago, Abundant Living Gallery and Gifts, S. Harrison, C. Baird, Pat Juip and Lisa Kaiser. The event is free to the public.

Sisterhood is powerful

P.E.O. offers opportunities for women’s education BILL STEVENSON Grosse Ile Grand

The cycle of opportunity continues. At their recent business meeting, the Grosse Ile Chapter DO of the Philanthropic Educational Organization (P.E.O) Sisterhood announced its educational advancement programs for 2021-2022. The P.E.O. Chapter is seeking female

Brittany Broda and Jane Colwell

applicants to advance its mission “celebrating the advancement of women, educating women through scholarships, grants, awards, and loans—all designed to motivate women to achieve their highest aspirations.” Founded in 1869 by seven young women at Iowa Wesleyan College, the P.E.O. is “one of the oldest women’s organizations in North America, and has grown for 152 years with close to 6000 chapters, celebrating ‘women helping women’.” There are three chapters locally, in Wyandotte, Lincoln Park, and Grosse Ile

who provide support for women through friendships, good works, and the bonds of sisterhood. One of 60 Grosse Ile P.E.O. members, Mary Jane Colwell explained, “People are becoming more familiar with the work of the P.E.O Sisterhood. We still offer the $2,500 STAR scholarships to aspiring high school senior women, and want to encourage outstanding young women to attend Cottey College, a nationally ranked liberal arts college for women in Missouri. Cottey College has been owned and supported by P.E.O. since 1927, and has been ranked nationally whose graduates have some of the lowest student debt upon graduation.” “In addition to these opportunities, the P.E.O. Sisterhood offers a number of other funds to support women and make a difference in their lives. We’d like to focus on these other revenue avenues to make women aware that there are other roads available to meet your dreams.” The P.E.O. Educational Loan Fund (ELF) is “a revolving loan fund established in 1907 to lend money at a very low interest rate to qualified women to assist them in securing a higher education. To date, the ELF has loaned more than $230 million dollars.” There is also the P.E.O. Program for Continuing Education (PCE) that has been granting money based on need since 1973, given to women in the United States and Canada whose education “has been interrupted and who find it necessary to return to school to support themselves and/or their families.” After World War II, the P.E.O established the International Peace Scholarship Fund (IPS) to provide scholarships

Further, the P.E.O Foundation provides opportunities for philanthropic donations to be made by benefactors to the good work of the Sisterhood. The Foundation is a nonprofit organization that encourages taxdeductible giving to its educational and charitable projects. Prior to their monthly meeting, local members spoke of the power of the P.E.O. Sisterhood Kristen Ruta and Kathy Benton and its connectivity. P.E.O. member Vicky Uday cited future women leaders. where I worked on the medical side of care, working with adults and children with closed head, brain, and spinal cord injuries. I did advanced work on cognitive therapy in a hospital and rehab setting. “The P.E.O. were very welcoming and supportive. It was not just a loan that I received, but I was embraced into a whole community of professional women who seek to give educational advancement and motivate women to achieve their aspirations. Because of them, I am able to pass it on and help others reach their dreams. I cannot thank P.E.O. enough for all their help.” Mary Jane Colwell identified Detroit resident Brittany Broda as a 2020 recipient of the PCE (Program for Continuing Education) philanthropy. Broda had earned her Bachelor of Science degree in 2010 and her Master of Social Work degree in 2014, from Wayne State University. She had worked for a time in the juvenile justice system doing family and individual therapy with adjuVicky Uday and Saachi Mittal dicated youth. She later worked for three years in Lincoln Park as a case manager at American Indian Services with founders Fay Givens and Kay McGowan. With continued reduced funding, and COVID-19 budget cuts, American Indian Services had to close its doors in July, 2020, after serving the Native American community in southeast Michigan for nearly 50 years. Broda was looking at unemployment, and realized she was one graduate class short of receiving her certification as a school social worker in an educational setting. But, she didn’t have the money for that one class. AIS supervisor Robin Brown checked her connections and resources—P.E.O. readily came to mind. “Robin saw something in me and she told me I would be great working with kids and young adults as a school social worker,” said Broda. “I was hesitant at first, but she convinced me to rethink my career path if she could get me a scholarship for that one class. And she did!” “I am very grateful to P.E.O. for giving me the opportunity to complete my certification. With that, I was able to find a job at Pathways Academy on St. Jean and East Jefferson in Detroit, where I work with teen mothers and fathers and the Matrix program. I use my own personal experience, growing up in Detroit, to help my students get the skills necessary for success to navigate the challenges that they face. I tell them to ‘take the shot, never give up.’ “It only takes one positive relationship to make a difference in someone’s life.” Making a difference. Over 150 years of women helping women. P.E.O. Estate Planning 101 Which plan do you need? Time to clear up the confusion about Estate Planning ... The following definitions lack legal precision, but makes it easier to get a clear picture of what may be needed in your case. ■ Will – letter of intent of where you want your personal property to go – or not go. ■ Living Will – Documents your wishes during your final days including final healthcare choices and possibly your burial wishes. ■ Trust – This is a “company” that you start, and you become the CEO, “Trustee” and “Settlor.” The company outlives you, but continues to manage your assets as if you were alive by the successor CEO – whom you designate. ■ Power of Attorney – Financial and Healthcare – you need both – the first so someone can pay your bills, the second, sometimes called a Patient Advocate, designates someone to make “hallway at the hospital” decisions to take the stress off the family. ■ Ladybird Deed – probably the best thing that has happened to owning a home. I love these deeds – you grant yourself a life estate – in your own property - but retain the power to sell or borrow against the property. If you do not sell before you pass, this “springs” the house out of your estate, and your heirs have instant ownership, subject to any mortgage or taxes owed or similar. Again, this is just a general description of the more popular terms – no one choice is a “silver bullet” but depending on how your estate gets planned out you can expedite a clean and clear process for the assets you worked a lifetime to save. Why wouldn’t you want to do that? Stop by or call and make an appointment and I’ll tell you what you’re going to need to do this right. To my numerous former clients – thank you for allowing me to draft your estate plan!

Goodwin, Lademan & Associates, Inc. goes back to its roots Grosse Ile residents Linda and Dave Goodwin are pleased to announce the grand opening of the new Goodwin, Lademan & Associates office in Allen Park. Their new office can be found next to the pocket park at 6736 Allen Rd, Allen Park MI 48101 with their entrance off White St across from the community center. The move to Allen Park is a return to the company’s original roots. In 1947, Linda Lademan’s parents, Lawrence and Betty Lademan, started the insurance agency in the basement of Betty’s parents’ home on Dasher St. in Allen Park. It was a meager beginning - knocking on doors to sell Homeowners and Auto Insurance. However, the business flourished. When Linda’s parents retired, they left a multi-million dollar agency as the second generation stepped into ownership. By this time, the business had moved to Southgate. In 1999, Linda Lademan and her husband David Goodwin formed Goodwin, Lademan and Associates,

Inc. and moved the business to Taylor. Linda and David’s son, Brian Goodwin, joined the agency in 2016, becoming the third generation of this family in the business. Recently, GLA made the decision to relocate to its original roots in Allen Park, Michigan. For three generations the family

has proudly served insurance needs of Michigan’s Southeast communities. The agency’s continued success is attributed to the wealth of knowledge and experience offered to clients. Goodwin, Lademan and Associate’s agents are licensed in all lines of property, casualty, life, health and disability Insurance. They have earned

some of the highest degrees and designations the industry offers. Goodwin, Lademan and Associates is proud to be your professional insurance agency, combining superlative personal service with state of the art technologies. “As an Independent Insurance Agency, we do not work for an insurance company. We Work for you, taking ownership of your needs, as if they are our own. We represent a carefully selected group of sound, reputable insurance companies to ensure the best protection. “Through a complex risk analysis, we design a program which gives you the best combination of coverage, cost and service. Especially if you aren’t already bundling your insurance policies, you should give us a call to experience our great programs for yourself “ says the agency’s president, David B. Goodwin, CPCU. The Wall that Heals finally makes its Downriver appearance

Remembering those who gave all

It has been a long time coming. The city of Riverview announced in late 2019 that The Wall That Heals monument would be coming to the city in 2020. The COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent shutdowns scrubbed that idea. A year later, things have gotten better and the Wall and the vcent is back on. The Wall That Heals, a threequarter scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial along with a mobile Education Center, will be in the city of Riverview, Aug. 12-15. The exhibit will be on display at Young Patriots Park and will be open 24 hours a day and free to the public. Ceaser Capital Management, the city of Riverview and Riverview American Legion Post 389 have led the effort that will bring the exhibit to the city. The Wall That Heals honors the more than three million Americans who served in the U.S. Armed forces in the Vietnam War and it bears the names of the 58,276 men and women who made

the ultimate sacrifice in Vietnam. “The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund is pleased to bring The Wall That Heals mobile exhibit to Riverview to allow local veterans and their family members a chance to experience The Wall. “We will work carefully with the host to provide a safe opportunity for the community to experience the healing and educational aspects of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial,” said Jim Knotts, president and CEO of VVMF. “Hosting The Wall That Heals provides an opportunity to honor and remember all those who served and sacrificed in the Vietnam War and educate visitors on the continuing impact of the Vietnam War on America.” Visitors will be encouraged to wear masks and practice social distancing to safeguard the staff, volunteers and other visitors. “Nothing is more important to VVMF than the health and well-being of our

Vietnam veterans and their families. We will work closely with the host to make certain that all health and safety protocols are met in order to provide the best visitor experience while keeping the safety of our staff, volunteers and visitors at top of mind,” said Knotts. “This event may be in Riverview, but it is an event for all of Downriver and Southeast Michigan,” said Riverview Director of Recreation Todd Dickman. The Wall That Heals is transported from community to community in a 53-foot trailer. When parked, the trailer opens with exhibits built into its sides, allowing it to serve as a mobile Education Center telling the story of the Vietnam War, The Wall and the divisive era in American history. The three-quarter scale Wall replica is 375 feet in length and stands 7.5 feet high at its tallest point. Visitors will experience The Wall rising above them as they walk towards the apex, a key feature of the design of The Wall in D.C. Visitors are able to do name rubbings of

individual service member’s names on The Wall. The mobile Education Center exhibit includes: digital photo displays of “Hometown Heroes” - service members whose names are on The Wall that list their home of record within the area of a visit; digital photo displays of Vietnam veterans from the local area honored through VVMF’s In Memory program which honors veterans who returned home from Vietnam and later died as a result of their service; video displays that teach about the history and impact of The Wall; educational exhibits told through items representative of those left at The Wall in D.C.; a replica of the In Memory plaque; a map of Vietnam and a chronological overview of the Vietnam War. The exhibits tell the story of the Vietnam War, The Wall and the era surrounding the conflict, and are designed to put American experiences in Vietnam in a historical and cultural SEE HEALS, Page 11

Continued from page 10 context. Since its debut in 1996, the exhibit has been on display in nearly 700 U.S. communities in addition to an April 1999 tour of the Four Provinces of Ireland and a visit to Canada in 2005. The Wall That Heals is a program of VVMF, the nonprofit organization that built the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. in 1982. The Wall That Heals is the only traveling exhibit affiliated with The Wall in Washington, D.C. and includes the largest Wall replica that travels the country. Two VVMF staff members lead volunteers on site, educate visitors and students, and ensure the reflective atmosphere of The Wall. I was thrilled to hear that the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Traveling Wall is soon coming to Riverview. It is very aptly known as the wall that heals. This is my story of the healing effect it had on me. I spent the better part of two years in Vietnam. I was assigned to the 71st Evacuation Hospital in Pleiku, located in the Central Highlands near the Cambodian Border. My duties included the admission and disposition of all patients. I witnessed death and destruction on a daily basis. After returning from Vietnam I turned to alcohol to suppress my memories. I did find some type of solace in alcohol, which gave me the ability to sleep nights. I rarely talked about my experiences in Vietnam since there were no pleasant memories. Thirty-seven years after returning from Vietnam I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease. This was attributed to a chemical called Agent Orange which was spread indiscriminately throughout the country. The medication I was taking did not mix well with my alcohol consumption and there were times when I felt like I was on my deathbed. Some personal counseling by my late brother Wayne (Dr Wayne Dyer, nationally renowned author/speaker often seen on PBS) brought about a burning desire to visit the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, DC. While there, all the memories came back. The mass casualties, the faces of fear, the DOAs, the blood-soaked floor of the emergency room, the mutilated bodies and, of course, the 22-year-old burn patient who died in my arms while crying for his mother with his final breath. There are over 58,000 names on that wall and over 19,000 of them were drafted or taken from their homes, their jobs and whatever else was going on in their lives. They were given about sixteen weeks of training and then sent to Vietnam and were killed. Yes, more than one third of all those killed in Vietnam were drafted. While on my knees at that wall I felt like I had a moment with God. The revelation of that moment was to do all I could to keep the memories alive of all those who lost their lives to the horrors of that war. A couple of years ago I wrote my story in poetic form and I’d like to share it. MY CALLING FROM GOD I collapsed on a treadmill and lost control and I thought my life was through. An incurable disease called Parkinson’s was the start of something new. He who knows all knew that I would never give up my beer. Since I was now 70, he felt the time was now here. God reached me through my late brother, Wayne, knowing what the outcome would be Knowing I had a story to tell, Wayne uttered these words to me: “Ðavid don’t give up, you must continue Do not die, with your music still in you.” Next came a trip to the Vietnam Wall, That’s where I gave up alcohol. It took quite a while to understand, It was God who put that pen in my hand. There are fifty plus thousands of names on that wall, God’s calling to me was, remember them all. I began writing stories even a book My efforts continued, whatever it took. Eight years have passed, I’m now seventy seven, I’ve been lifted from hell and I’m halfway to heaven. I’ll continue to write and take my stand, Til I can no longer hold a pen in my hand

Called to serve

2021 GIHS grad Mitchell Lewis a Naval Academy cadet

The grueling seven-week Plebe Summer at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., is almost over for 2021 Grosse Ile High School graduate Mitchell Lewis.

Lewis spent the summer in basic training before beginning classes at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD.

It began early in the morning June 30 when his proud parents, Kristin and Steve Lewis, dropped off their son. Mitchell was among 1,350 new midshipmen – the rank of cadets at Annapolis – inducted this year into one of the nation’s most prestigious service academies. Less than 10 percent PAULA of applicants are NEUMAN accepted. Grosse Ile He was nominated Grand for the academy by both U.S. Rep. Debbie Dingell and U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow. Being accepted at the USNA also requires top grades, high SAT scores, physical fitness, demonstration of leadership, teacher recommendations and a stellar essay. Serving in the military has been a lifelong goal, and in his letters home – plebes have no access to cellphones or computers – Mitchell has assured his parents that his resolve remains strong

despite the mental and physical rigors of Plebe Summer basic training. “We’ve gotten fairly frequent letters from him,” Kristin said. “He’s very thoughtful. He misses his friends and family, but he’s completely driven by his purpose for being there. He’s a great kid.” In a recent phone call – plebes are allowed two calls over the seven weeks – he talked to his parents. “He wanted you to know that Plebe Summer has presented him with tremendous challenges,” Kristin said. “He’s pushed beyond what he thought were his limits several times a day, every day. But he’s driven by his ‘why’ – to protect people and serve his country. He’s looking forward to the end of Plebe Summer on Aug. 20 and the beginning of the academic school year.” Mitchell, a top scholar and athlete in high school who was a wrestler, a lacrosse player and an award-winning SEE MITCHELL, Page 15

Mitchell Lewis, wearing his new white Navy uniform, says goodbye to his girlfriend, GIHS senior Lindsey Miller (left), and his parents Kristin and Steve Lewis, after his induction into the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Md.

MITCHELL

Continued from page 14 football player, first visited Annapolis during an eighth-grade school trip. “They went to D.C. and they always stop at the Naval academy,” Kristin said. “He has wanted to do this for as long as I’ve known him. When he was 14 months old, he was the kid carrying G.I Joes at Home Depot. He’s always wanted to serve his country.” The Lewises will get to visit their son Aug. 12, and spend a few hours over the next three days with him. When Plebe Summer ends, Mitchell’s four years of academics and training at Annapolis will begin. Kristin described dropping Mitchell off at the academy on June 30. “At the front door, the older midshipmen start aggressively preparing the plebes,” she said. “They just start in on them. We could hear the yelling standing outside probably 400 feet away.” Third-year midshipmen called detailers are the ones who do the yelling – lots and lots of yelling. It’s tradition. On Induction Day, the plebes get their uniforms and name badges, have their heads shaved, divest themselves of anything personal they may have brought with them, get medical assessments, and are issued a 225-

page book called “Reef Points” that introduces them to the Navy and the academy. Plebes are expected to memorize more than 1,000 facts in the book and much more over the summer. At 7 p.m. on Induction Day, Mitchell and his fellow plebes, now wearing their white uniforms, participated in a military ceremony and took their oaths to adhere to the academy and the country. Watching that was a moving experience, Kristin said. “Then the plebes are released back to their parents,” she added. “We got 30 minutes with him to say goodbye and to cry – to cry a lot.” The academy, founded in 1845, was recognized by U.S. News and World Reports as the No. 1 public college in the country. Tuition at Annapolis is free, but midshipmen commit to five years of active-duty service after graduation. According to the USNA, midshipmen learn from military and civilian instructors and participate in varsity sports and other extracurricular activities. They study subjects including leadership, ethics, small arms, drill, seamanship and navigation, tactics, naval engineering and weapons and military law. Upon graduation, the midshipmen earn a bachelor of science degree in a choice of 26 different majors.

Ways to improve your health in under five minutes A healthy brain can help us solve problems, manage emotions, deal with stress, and unlock our goals in life. And just like we exercise other parts of our body, paying special attention to our brain to help keep it functioning optimally is important. Here are a few tips: • Avoid a high sugar diet, as it may increase your risk of dementia. • Get enough rest - ideally, seven to nine hours each night. Inadequate sleep is linked to slower thinking. • Keep your brain stimulated daily with games and puzzles. Engaging socially with friends and family is also great. • Never stop learning. Continue to read about new things that interest you, learn a new skill, or pick up a hobby. Want to do more for your brain health? What makes a supportive shoe? When it comes to shoes, many people often pick trends and fashion over function and support. Wearing unsupportive shoes can actually cause problems beyond blisters and sprains, like back pain. Since the feet are the base of your body, it’s important to support them properly. The next time you’re in the market for a new, everyday shoe, here are a few important things to consider to help keep your feet (and spine) happy. 1. Choose a shoe that’s the right size. Your feet and toes shouldn’t feel

tightly packed, but have just enough room to wiggle around. 2. Look for shoes that are flat. This helps avoid improper weight distribution and allows the natural roll-through process of your foot to occur when moving. 3. Find a flexible sole. You can test for this by bending the shoe at the heel and toe. Improve your well-being with 30 minutes of fun It would be impossible to describe the past year as “fun.” However, as we slowly find our new normal, it’s important that we restore the fun in

our lives, too - and science agrees. Scheduling 30 minutes of fun each day is great for our well-being. Here’s why. It may improve your relationship. As we age, we get lost in the day-today routine of life and miss out on new opportunities. Partaking in a new activity with your partner that induces laughter is a great place to start. Fun can encourage movement. Physical activity releases dopamine, serotonin and other feel-good endorphins. Physical movement doesn’t have to be intense—you can try things like gardening, swimming, or a walk around the block. You’ll laugh more. When we’re having fun, we naturally laugh. It’s long been said that laughter is the best medicine as it’s an antidote to stress. Individuals who laugh frequently tend to show fewer negative feelings in stressful situations. What “fun” will you be adding to your life this month? ~ Cousineau Chiropractic

TELESCOPING THE TOWNSHIP

Grosse Ile Bakery has new look inside and outside

The Grosse Ile Bakery has a long history. In the old days, it was a grocery store. The former baker, Gino, bought and owned it until he sold it in 2004 to the present owner, who came to the PAMELA A. Island from FRUCCI Grosse Ile Grand Cambodia. Gino shared a lot of his recipes for baked goods but the present owner has come up with his own. Several years ago I interviewed Gino for a cable show I was producing. I filmed it at his big, beautiful home. I remember his greeting at his front door: “Welcome to the house that donuts built!” According to a regular at the bakery, I was told her out-of-town granddaughter proclaims “The Grosse Ile Bakery donuts are so much better than the donuts where I live.” When you buy their pizza or baked goods, you’ll notice a brand new look at the bakery. Inspired by local resident Josie Cappellino, the owners had the outside of the shop painted a bright golden yellow and the inside has brighter colors and an artistic décor including multiple colored photos decorating the walls and a welcome sign reminding customers: “Don’t worry…Be happy.” Former resident paints a portrait of George W. Bush Robert Anderson is the son of Don Anderson and he became reacquainted with President George W. Bush when he was hired to do his portrait now in Yale’s portrait gallery. They knew each other when

they were in the same Spanish class at Yale in 1968. When Bush was deciding who would do his portrait for the Yale Club, he called Robert from Air Force One and asked him to paint it. I remember Don Anderson as the choir director of St. James Episcopal Church and also that he was a “birder.” When we lived on Hickory Circle, I kept hearing a beautiful bird call and couldn’t identify it. I called Don and held the phone outside the back door. After I asked him if he could identify what bird was making that call, he immediately told me, “Baltimore oriole.” Summer school students enjoy a wide range of activities Thanks to a sizable grant to provide summer enrichment, Grosse Ile kids from kindergarten to middle school spent eight weeks this summer participating in educational and inspirational activities. The activities included a week with the theme: Healthy Minds; Healthy Bodies

at the new athletic club; a second week concentrating on a career in engineering; the third week was spent at the community garden at Westcroft Gardens with the theme: “From farm to table”; the fourth week concentrated on Olympic activities; the fifth included tours of the Island led by the Grosse.Ile Historical Society; the sixth week was art appreciation; the seventh week had the title “Boy Scout Survival”; and the final session will finish with a week entitled “Explore Nature and Gibraltar Bay.” Elementary teacher Lindsay Parsons headed the program, which allowed her to hire the teachers, provide materials and pay for the buses for tours. The summer of 2021 is a first time for Grosse Ile to take part in the summer enrichment program. There was no charge for the children to attend. Grosse Ile Garden Club plans old-fashioned fair on Aug. 21 Back in 1912, there was a Farmers Club on Grosse Ile

that brought the community together to either display their home grown vegetables or come to the fair and admire all the produce. The Grosse Ile Garden Club is reviving this former event at Centennial Farm on Saturday Aug. 21. Gardeners will display their flowers and vegetables and there will be booths operated by the many clubs and organizations in the community. Private citizens have also been invited to display their crafts for sale. The Garden Club is making it into an old-fashioned fair with lots of fun activities for all ages. The Island Fair…”Home Town…Home Grown” opens at 9 a.m. and runs until 4 p.m. Senior Fruccis planning a ‘round the world’ cruise in 2023 At an age when most grandparents and great grandparents are planning trips away from home to visit offspring, Jack and I have booked passage on the Princess Lines for a ‘round

the world; cruise taking off from Fort Lauderdale in January of 2023. When we sat down with our son and daughter and asked them about leaving our existing bank account to them when we’re long gone, their response was, “spend it on yourselves!” Jack came up with the idea of a round the world cruise and I okayed it. We’ve already paid our down payment and if we’re still “mobile” in 2023 at age 93 and 91, we leave from Fort Lauderdale, FL and cruise for 111 days making stops along the way. I even checked with the editor of The Grand to see if I could change my “Telescoping the Township” column to “Around the World in 111 Days” and he was all for it! Krogers’ frozen food section has blue moon ice cream! As a little girl growing up on Grosse Ile, a real treat for my twin brother Pat and me was when our dad would drive us to Wyandotte to an ice cream shop and buy us a blue moon cone. (It’s blue in color and has a slight pineapple taste.) Our daughter Marti has also developed a fondness for blue moon ice cream and once a couple of years ago, I bought a quart of it and paid way too much to have it shipped to New York City where she lives. The dry ice it was packed in was considered a “hazard” if it opened and might affect the pilot while in the air, so I paid the high price. Imagine how pleased I was to be looking in the ice cream section of Krogers and discovering blue moon ice cream in a carton.

The future is firming up. We’re ready! As we heard in advance that restaurants and bars were going to be closed down in March of 2020, I was defiant. A week later, I had realized that there was nothing I could relate this to that would give me any basis on which to rely for “knowing” what to do. It wasn’t up to me any more, and of course, Peter that was the beginning Rose Grosse Ile of this most bizarre Grand year and a half. I won’t even try to explain the roller coaster of emotion, or the apprehension of managing through a period of very low revenue. We did alright, we made it through and are now as prepared as we know how to be as the autumn season begins here in August. We did what independent merchants do better than national chains, as always. Our stores are changed, no question. But we had a sensational Street Art Fair here in Wyandotte. Every artist we talked to, every retailer and restaurant and every attendee were more than happy about the Street Fair being back. It felt great, especially because it seemed to be an engine start of sorts. People wanted to spend money, and in an amplified way, so believe me, we were surprised, and we learned more from this fair than any prior year. Irritants abound, of course. People that aren’t vaccinated seem almost gleeful to see the look of annoyance about being an obstacle to getting past the pandemic. There are some folks that, while wrong in my regard, are on firmer footing for their rationale. Their apprehension is derived from misinformation that they won’t let go of, and while that is indeed their choice, it is also an absolute infringement on my rights. We haven’t come to terms yet with a whole new reality that appears to be setting up as a a long term problem, with side effects and unintended consequences of all sorts. All of that notwithstanding, business seems to be percolating and slipping into a strong gear. That’s how I see the near future. I see a strong holiday season, and I see no abatement as we turn the corner into next spring - which is crucial,

The response to the 2021 Wyandotte Street Art Fair made it clear that shoppers are happy to be back and willing to spend money.

because the thing that paralyzed apparel retailers is the suspension of confidence and assertiveness about a future that was crazy uncertain. By the time this paper prints and is distributed, chances are that we will have been in Chicago twice for future buying for women and men at our best trade shows. We wouldn’t be going at all if we were nervous and uncertain,

and by golly, it feels really good to write those words. We’re confident in large part because people are seeking us out and specifically buying from small when they find things they like. They’re coming to us first. I’ve been “educating” about the effect of spending locally vs at national chains, and worst, online. Amazon and everyone else that takes a piece of the pie while diverting revenue out of state are obnoxious parasites on the local and indie economy that we indies built. But here’s the thing: We have to be compelling as merchants. We have to be really good at selection, vibe, presentation, marketing, and everything that goes into running a shop. Macy’s is getting hit far harder than we small guys, because we provide the service that Macy’s cannot. We know what we’re talking about, we take the time to find out what our clients want, and we don’t try to talk them into what they really don’t want. We’re safe-zone retailers that know a lot of our guests by

name. Mine is not the only voice of urgency to Shop Local. Every time I drive through a place that was once far busier and more robust, I feel a massive sense of loss, and depression that once lost, it is so hard to rebuild. The loss was due to too few insisting on pushing back against the pressure. It takes the residents, the business leaders and entrepreneurs and the city, county and state governments working to insist on having a cool place at the center of our shopping worlds to succeed against all odds, and when that works, it makes for a beautiful story. Because “big” is not shy about declaring that it wants all of the business. They have very deep pockets because they are funded by Wall Street or big private investors that throw money to flatten their small competition as they did in the 1980s. That became the new normal. Flattening all the local businesses. And now it’s coming back. The pendulum is swinging back to those responsible for supporting the towns they love. There are a lot more people that say all the time that they hate the mall amd won’t go there. I hear more and more say that shopping online is stupid, especially when they have the choices they do, right here locally, where their own money circulates and is touched by dozens of hands before that ripple effect abates. Viva la Indie. We’re still here.

You probably know by now that McCormick has recalled its Perfect Pinch Italian Seasoning, Culinary Italian Seasoning and Franks RedHot Buffalo Seasoning, owing to possible contamination of the products with Salmonella. All have been removed from store shelves. EVELYN But before I learned CAIRNS Grosse Ile about the recall notice, Grand I made an awesome recipe Ronnie Padmos of Trenton shared from Cuisine magazine for One Pot Ragu with Italian Sausage and used 1tablespoon of the Perfect Pinch seasoning. Thank goodness it was not included on the recall list, because I enjoyed every bite of the dish. You will not believe how quick and easy it is to prepare —like 30 minutes from start to finish! Because the recipe makes a lot, you may want to freeze portions or share with friends or relatives. For dessert, consider the following recipes for one-bowl Butterscotch Toffee Cookies and Ultimate OneBowl Zucchini Bread. For the yummy cookie recipe, you will need one package each of butterscotch chips and milk chocolate English toffee bits, which may be in short supply. No problem finding zucchini for the bread, which is one of the best I have made. Don’t bother to frost it; simply sprinkle the loaf generously with powdered sugar after it has cooled. RONNIE PADMOS’ ONE-POT RAGU ½ cup each chopped carrots, celery and onions 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 pound bulk Italian sausage 28-ounce can petite diced tomatoes 3 cups low-sodium chicken broth 1 tablespoon Italian seasoning 8 ounces uncooked thin spaghetti, broken in half Salt and pepper to taste ½ cup chopped fresh basil Chop carrots, celery and onions in a food processor. Heat oil in a large pot (I used a 4-quart) over medium high. Add sausage and vegetables; cook until sausage browns, about 5 minutes. Stir in tomatoes, broth, Italian seasoning and spaghetti (make sure spaghetti is submerged in broth);

bring to a boil. Cover pot, reduce heat to medium-low and cook until pasta is al dente and sauce thickens, 8 to 10 minutes Season with salt and pepper; stir in basil. Serves 6. BUTTERSCOTCH TOFFEE COOKIES 2 large eggs, at room temperature ½ cup canola oil 1 package butter pecan cake mix, regular size 1 package (10 to 11 ounces) butterscotch chips 1 package (8 ounces) milk chocolate English toffee bits Preheat oven to 350 degrees. In a large bowl, beat eggs and oil until blended. Gradually add cake mix, mixing well. Fold in chips and toffee bits. Drop by tablespoonfuls 2 inches apart onto greased or parchment-lined baking sheets. Bake until golden brown, 10 to 12 minutes. Cool 1 minute before removing to wire racks to cool completely. Makes about 5 dozen. ULTIMATE ONE-BOWL ZUCCHINI BREAD 3 large eggs ½ cup vegetable oil ½ cup lightly packed brown sugar ¾ cup granulated sugar 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon ¼ teaspoon nutmeg 2 teaspoons vanilla 1 teaspoon baking powder ½ teaspoon baking soda ½ teaspoon salt 2 cups all-purpose flour 2 lightly packed cups shredded zucchini (shred right before adding) 2/3 cup chopped walnuts Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Butter a 9x5-inch loaf pan and line with a sling of parchment. In a large mixing bowl, whisk well eggs, oil, sugars, cinnamon, nutmeg and vanilla. Blend in baking powder, soda and salt. Stir in flour. When almost incorporated, fold in zucchini and nuts. Don’t overmix. Turn batter into pan and bake about 60 minutes or until toothpick inserted near center has no wet batter. Cool on rack about 10 to 15 minutes before removing from pan. HAPPY COOKING! (Contact me at Evycairns@aol.com.)

Dingell Welcome Center at Refuge finally opens After many years in the making, the wait is finally over: The John D. Dingell, Jr., Visitor Center at the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge is now open! Named after the late congressman, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is proud to dedicate this building to him in honor of, and to help continue, his conservation legacy. In a wonderful coincidence, the visitor center was opened on his birthday, July 8. The Dingell family have always been avid supporters and protectors of the natural beauty of our area. It was part of the vision of John D. Dingell, Jr., to have a facility where the public can come to learn about and connect to the Detroit River and its surrounding areas. The realization of his vision could be heard as children played in the building and searched for hidden features in the exhibits and filled the center with smiles, laughter and life. Reaching this moment is something the staff at the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge have always strived for and they will continue to work hard to be a welcoming place where urban residents can both connect with and be inspired by nature. It’s been a long journey to get to where we are today. Did you know that from 1946-1990 an automobile

company operated an automotive component manufacturing plant on what is now the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge? This manufacturing plant included the production of brakes and associated adhesives, oils, and sealers. During its years of operation, the land around the site became increasingly polluted. It took multiple years of environmental cleanup to get the site ready

for public visitation. The visitor center will be open Thursday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The grounds around the facility are open for self-guided visitation seven days a week during daylight hours. Come visit us at 5437 West Jefferson Ave., Trenton, MI 48183, or check out our website and Facebook page.

Michigan Department of Natural Resources

The year 1968 is often described as one of the most tumultuous and momentous in American history. Among the year’s many events, there was an Apollo moon orbit, landmark civil rights legislation passed and the assassinations of Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy. That same year, an event on Lake Michigan marked a turning point for natural resource management and conservation on the Great Lakes. The Survey Vessel Steelhead set forth from Charlevoix for its first year of fisheries surveys on the lakes. Construction of the S/V Steelhead, built in Escanaba by the T.D. Vinette Company, was completed in April 1968. Soon after, the S/V Steelhead set out for its first fisheries assessment operations – investigating the distribution, abundance, growth and diet of major fish stocks on lakes Michigan and Huron. These first assessments are documented in an amazing book titled “The Salmon Hunters,” written and illustrated by the first captain of the S/V Steelhead, William J. Palmer. Since construction of the survey boat, the Michigan Department of Natural Resources has gone on to commission vessels at each of its Great Lakes research stations. The Research Vessel Channel Cat (at the DNR’s Lake St. Clair Fisheries Research Station) was also launched in 1968. At the Marquette Fisheries Research Station, the R/V Lake Char replaced the R/V Judy in 2007, and the newest vessel, the R/V Tanner, went into service in 2017, replacing the R/V Chinook at the Alpena Fisheries Research Station. The R/V Tanner was named for Dr. Howard Tanner, a former DNR director who is widely recognized as the father of the Great Lakes salmon fishery. While these vessels have similar missions on each of the lakes, the S/V Steelhead is unique among DNR vessels in that crew can live aboard. This allows the boat to work for extended periods far from its home port and facilitate surveys at remote locations, such as around islands and reefs in the middle of the lake or those that require extending beyond a traditional 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. shift.

The original design of the vessel was intended to allow for weeklong, offshore sampling cruises with a crew of five. This foresight has reaped benefits throughout the history of the Lake Michigan fisheries program, with collection of unique and valuable information that would have been

this point: annual Lake Michigan lake trout surveys and the annual multiagency forage fish survey. Lake trout Lake trout were one of the target species on that first cruise in 1968 and continue to be one of the primary targets for current survey efforts. Beginning in early April and extending into

For example, if sea lamprey wounds are causing excessive mortality of lake trout in certain areas of the lake, those areas can be targeted for further sea lamprey control efforts. Currently, most lake trout caught by anglers in Lake Michigan are fish produced in a hatchery. A significant management goal for Lake Michigan

impossible from small boats limited to nearshore sampling. The accommodations aboard the vessel are pretty spartan, with bunks for four crew members below deck and housing for the vessel captain in the pilot house. The galley is furnished with a refrigerator, stove, microwave and coffee maker – important for keeping the crew alert during early-morning and late-night surveys. On the deck above the crew quarters, an enclosed, heated laboratory allows for sample workup and archiving in all seasons and weather conditions, with two chest freezers and an ice machine in the vessel hold to ensure all samples come back to Charlevoix in good condition. Since that initial cruise described in William Palmer’s book, the S/V Steelhead has been involved in numerous surveys and research studies that have directly benefited Michigan’s fisheries. Two examples serve to illustrate

June, the S/V Steelhead crew deploys gill nets to sample Lake Michigan lake trout populations at ports from St. Joseph to Petoskey. For every fish that’s brought aboard, length and weight are measured, aging structures are extracted, stomach samples are collected, health indices are recorded and wounds from sea lamprey are tabulated. In some cases, additional samples are collected for special studies or at the request of collaborators. For example, muscle or fin tissue samples are collected that allow fisheries researchers to chemically measure the diet of fish over long periods of time. Information collected by the S/V Steelhead crew is then combined across the lake with similar information collected by other Great Lakes agencies to determine the abundance and health of Lake Michigan lake trout populations and to direct management efforts to improve these populations.

is to restore self-sustaining (wild spawning) lake trout populations. To help address this goal, the S/V Steelhead crew conducts fall gill net surveys of lake trout on important spawning reefs. These surveys are aimed at measuring adult spawner abundance and indexing the contribution of wild and hatchery-produced fish to the adult lake trout spawning population. One key piece of information collected during this survey is the presence of fin clips or tags on the lake trout sampled. These marks help identify fish that came from a hatchery. Pairing this information with data from stocking events, including location and stocking method, managers can identify actions that have the most impact on restoring wild-spawning fish. For example, if lake trout from a specific strain (parent stock) are surSEE STEELHEAD, Page 34

viving better to reproduce, managers can shift hatchery and stocking efforts to include more of that strain of fish. To date, about 30 percent of lake trout in Lake Michigan are wild fish, but that percentage is increasing every year. Lake Superior’s lake trout population is self-sustaining, with supplemental stocking from hatcheries ending in 2006. Forage fish The multi-agency forage fish survey is critical to the DNR’s ability to understand predator-prey dynamics in Lake Michigan, and to successfully manage salmon stocking and lake trout restoration. To maintain healthy populations of salmon and trout, fish anglers usually target, the lake must contain sufficient numbers of forage fish salmon and trout eat, like alewife, rainbow smelt and bloater chubs. Each year the S/V Steelhead crew teams up with vessels from other Great Lakes fisheries agencies to measure the abundance of forage fish in the entire lake. The DNR crew samples multiple transects along Michigan’s shoreline, out to the middle of the lake. On each transect, hydroacoustic data are collected, electronically recording the number and distribution of forage fish in the water column. These hydroacoustic data are combined with fish catches from trawls (lake bottom nets), to verify the size and species composition of the forage fish community. Data from Michigan waters are combined with information collected in other jurisdictions to give managers a lakewide estimate of forage abundance. This estimate is used to help fine-tune stocking numbers and fishing regulations – management “levers” that help the DNR maintain a balance between predatory salmon and trout and the food they need to survive. Additional surveys conducted from the S/V Steelhead target other important Lake Michigan fish species, such as yellow perch, lake whitefish, Chinook and coho salmon, steelhead and cisco. All these surveys are coordinated with managers in Michigan and other Lake Michigan states, to ensure the maximum amount of information is available on which to base fisheries management decisions. The majority of funding for this work comes from Michigan fishing license revenue and proceeds from Federal Aid in Sportfish Restoration, a federal program that distributes revenue collected on the sale of fishing equipment and small engine/boat motor fuel back to the states to finance fisheries research, management, and fish production activities. Like any of us who’ve passed our 50th year, the S/V Steelhead has occasional aches and pains. The boat will soon require some significant upgrades to continue successful operations. Repowering with efficient modern engines, hull maintenance and replacement of outdated deck equipment, including trawl drums, winches and cranes, are all “must do” items for the S/V Steelhead in the coming years. However, this vessel launched with such foresight in 1968 is still paying huge dividends for the people of Michigan and the fish of Lake Michigan. More broadly, as a result of the great dedication and vision of the early staff of its Charlevoix, Alpena, Marquette and Lake St. Clair DNR research stations, the DNR now has a standardized Great Lakes fisheries program that rivals any freshwater assessment program in North America. The vessel crews are well-trained, highly skilled and hard-working. DNR biologists are widely recognized for their scientific knowledge, their collaborative abilities and their strong awareness of the importance of these amazing fisheries to the public. The DNR’s Great Lakes fisheries stations – and especially its research vessels – are truly the foundation of Great Lakes fisheries management, and the department is looking forward with anticipation to what the next 50 years will bring on the S/V Steelhead. Many people - most, perhaps - go to an optometrist, get an eye exam and then follow the lady in the white coat over to the wall of frames and pick out a new set of glasses. The story ends with the customer paying way more than he or she ever expected. If that pretty much describes you, Bob Schmittou says there is something you should know: He can save you money, maybe lots of money. Schmittou, a proud military veteran, owns New Eyes Optical, located on 1616 Ford Avenue, right at 16th Street in Wyandotte. There are no doctors at New Eyes, just lots of frames and Schmittou, who can get you into fashionable new glasses for a lot less than all of the other chains and franchises out there. Just bring your eyeglass prescription to him and see what kind of magic he can work for you. “I am kind of like what the pharmacy is to your doctor,” Schmittou said. “Your doctor writes you a prescription. He doesn’t try to sell you the drugs. You go to the pharmacy. The same is true with us. You bring us a prescription and we will fill it.” New Eyes Optical does not accept insurance, but their low prices mean that is often not an issue. Schmittou has been in the eyeglass game for a long time. He enlisted in the Army after graduating from Lincoln Park High School and Uncle Sam sent him to school to learn how to make eyeglasses. He did that in the Army for nearly four years and then worked for Lenscrafters and for private doctors after that. In 2012 he opened New Eyes Optical and has been there ever since. Schmittou said he has over 1,300 frames in his building and can make arrangements to get others if customers come in with a specific brand or style in mind. For sunglass lovers, Schmittou said he has the largest selection of Ray Ban and Oakley sunglasses in the area. If you come in, you will deal with Schmittou himself. He and his wife Pam are the only employees. Schmittou does the fitting of the eyewear, and Pam orders frames and keeps the shop looking fresh by arranging the frame displays and decorating. So, if you are in the market for new glasses, would like a little personal attention and a really low price, give Schmittou a call at 313-587-4204, drop an email at neweyesoptical2012@gmail.com or contact them through their Facebook page, Facebook.com/neweyesoptical.

Families of former classmate visit the island The Grosse Ile High School Class of 1950 classmate Mary Day Bradbury passed away in October in California. I was in communication with her son John Bradbury, who sent word of Mary’s passing. John said she was still with us when I sent her a scrapbook of the Class of PAMELA A. FRUCCI ’50 I’d been Grosse Ile Grand compiling since graduation that included photos growing up on Grosse Ile as well as the many reunions we’d held for 70 years. Since there were only 27 of us who graduated from the stage of the old 1911 Grosse Ile High sSchool (now demolished) it was easy keeping track of classmates. I invited John to come to Michigan and Grosse Ile to see where his mother grew up. He took me up on the offer and spent a week here from July 26 to 30. Along with John were his brother Bill and their wives and they not only spent time on the Island, but their time here included driving up to Ann Arbor and touring the University of Michigan campus (where their mother graduated from in 1954,) attending a Tiger game (a Tiger victory) on July 30, and riding bikes on the Riverwalk in Detroit. Before they flew home to California, we had a chance to say a fond farewell. When I asked them what their favorite activity while on the Island was, they all chimed in and said the ride out on the water on our son Jay’s pontoon boat. I even put them to work! I had a rock with a plaque on it that stated “In honor of the Class of ’50.” We all drove

Downriver Kiwanis Club distributes 300 “Birthday Cake Kits” Birthdays are a great time to celebrate with friends and family. We all have a birthday, but many children and young adults are living in situations where their birthday is just another day and there is no one for them to celebrate with, or any joys of a birthday to celebrate with, such as a birthday cake or even receiving a birthday card. Recently, the Downriver West Kiwanis club went back to meeting in person after the last 15 months of online meetings due to the pandemic, and they decided to tackle this issue as part of their Third Monday Service Project meetings. The club decided to have a “Birthday Cake Kit” project. They partnered with businesses throughout the Downriver area, and set up collection sites to collect boxes of cake mix, cans of frosting, packages of candles, other goodies and disposable cake pans. Each kit would also contain a handwritten birthday card. Monetary donations were also accepted to purchase whatever items were needed to have the exact number of birthday cake kits items. The club received $679.00 in donations. Downriver businesses who donated include JSP Dental, A Serendipity Cakery, Sugarr Donuts, Sugared Petal Cake Shoppe, Scoopy’s, No Sugar Momma and Sam’s Club. Businesses who had collection boxes include Wild Birds Unlimited, Advantage One Credit Union, Community Choice Credit Union, Sugarr Donuts and the Brownstown Town-

ship office. On July 19, at the club’s regular Monday night meeting, club members

and guests assembled a total of 300 birthday cake kits at the Brownstown Community Center. These kits were

assembled in less than an hour and then distributed to 10 organizations throughout the Downriver area. A few of the organizations that received the kits were Mimi’s Mission, Vista Maria, Fish & Loaves, Penrickton Center, and The Madison Center in Wyandotte. “We are extremely excited to do this project and be able to donate these birthday cake kits to organizations that work with children and young adults who are dealing with various issues, such as homelessness, or physical, emotional and mental health challenges,” said Joann Bomia, club member and project leader for the birthday cake kit project. “We hope to be able to repeat this project and grow it every year to give more children the opportunity to celebrate their birthday.” Information on the club’s weekly meetings & programs, upcoming service projects and community events, and membership opportunities, can be found on the club’s Facebook page: facebook.com/downriverwestkiwanis Downriver West Kiwanis is an organization of volunteers dedicated to improving the lives of children one child and one community at a time.
