150 Years of Faith By Sarah Hemsworth

S

t. James Episcopal Church has an inspirational background that started before it was designed and built in 1868. The church sits back on East River Road, with a beautiful view of the Detroit River. The gothic style, Episcopal church, was created from the wishes of a freed slave, Lisette Denison. Elizabeth (Lisette) Denison Forth was born into slavery in 1786 near Detroit. Lisette’s family was owned by William and Catherine Tucker; when William died, Lisette’s parents were fried, but Lisette and her brother were still slaves. By Sarah Hemsworth From the creative minds that bring Islandfest to life, this snowy season holds a new fair, Winterfest. On February 24, the winter themed festival will be held at Water’s Edge, from the 4:00pm until 7:00pm. It will be an event for all to enjoy. The director of the Grosse Ile Recreation Department, Kim O’Farrell, and Chad Novak have been planning to bring this exciting winter activity. It will help bridge the dead of winter for residents between Island Fest and Island Glow. In hopes of a white blanket covering the ground, winter time activities will include hockey on the outdoor ice rink, snowman building contests, and relay races. As the winter air bites the cheeks of all around, there will be a bonfire and the biggest feature of the event, a chili cook off. See WINTERFEST on page 4

TELESCOPING THE TOWNSHIP WELCOME TO SAV-ON’S REPLACEMENT: CVS PHARMACY There is now a fourth drug store on Grosse Ile. CVS (which stands for Consumers’ Value Stores) bought out 21 Sav-On Drug stores in Michigan, including our drug store on Macomb. By Pamela A. Frucci The changeover was obvious when former customers stepped into CVS Pharmacy this January. The aisles were open wider and gone were all the tobacco products that once lined the shelves at the checkout counter in the front of Sav-On Drugs. (In fact, CVS removed all tobacco products from their 9,700 stores and pharmacies nationwide in September of 2014!) The company, whose headquarters are in Woonsocket, RI, actually owns 7,900 stores but their grand total includes pharmacies in Target stores across the country. I couldn’t talk to the store managers

which just this year was replaced by CVS. My contact in Woonsocket, RI listened to a proposal I had to cut back on childhood obesity as a major health problem. She gave me her contact info to send a copy of my proposal which she said she would share with their board of directors. I thought “What the heck? Since they’re interested in good health, why not address overweight Americans, starting with kids?!”

on Grosse Ile because they said all information has to come from their headquarters. They gave me a number to call in Woonsocket, RI. I found out that most of the former employees of Sav-On stayed on after going through CVS’s screening process. I also found out from talking to an Amy Lanctot in Woonsocket, that CVS has a main interest in promoting good health among their customers and have an active pharmacy department to communicate with those needing

prescriptions. Founded in 1963 in a town in Massachusetts, CVS opened its first pharmacy in 1967. Their sign will soon replace Sav-On on Macomb Street, the fourth in a line of drug stores. Being an old timer, I remember Brown’s Drug, located where the Hoy Pan Chinese restaurant now stands. There was Dashers which was located in a section of the Kroger Store and then moved across the street. Sav-On took over from Dasher Drug Store

GI NATURE & LAND CONSERVANCY PLANS WINTER WALK Now celebrating their 25th year as an active organization, the GINLC is inviting interested participants to the Gibraltar Bay unit of the International Wildlife Refuge to walk with naturalist Natalie Cypher to look for signs of winter wildlife. Scheduled for 1:00pm Saturday, Feb. 17, registration for “Winter Ways of the Bay” can be by email: GINLC.education@gmail. com or by phone at (734) 624-7993.

FAITH

Continued from page 1 Lisette and her brother established residency in Canada to claim their freedom. 12 years after moving back to Detroit, Lissette married Scipio Forth, the owner of a freight business. At the passing of her husband in 1831, she joined the house of John Biddle, mayor of Detroit and founder of Wyandotte. Lisette purchased land and invested her savings in business ventures, growing her profits. The wife of John Biddle, Eliza, became close friends with Lissette, taking her to Paris and other places. In 1856 Lisette came back to Michigan, where William Biddle, son of John Biddle, employed Lisette at his estate on Grosse Ile. On August 7, 1866, Lisette passed away at 80 years old and willed a portion of her estate to her family; the rest, some $3,000, to construct a church on the island. Her money provided the bulk of the funds, while William Biddle contributed his money to finish the building. William Biddle and his brother James donated the land for the chapel. Gordon W. Lloyd hired out of Detroit designed the structure, and construction began the summer of 1867. The entrance to the chapel is a vibrant red double door, with a plaque that reads “these doors are given to the glory of God. In loving memory of Elizabeth Denison Forth, who willed her life savings that this church might be built.” James Biddle constructed an altar cross, a kneeling bench and reading stand for the minister. The first rector, Reverend Moses Hunter, began services in the spring of 1868. The chapel found

a new addition in 1898, a beautiful Tiffany Glass window donated by William Biddle’s son. The tall window depicts an angel right behind the altar, which sets a beautiful backdrop. A larger church was added to the chapel in 1958, with stain glass windows that match the chapel. “I moved to Grosse Ile with my family in 1976 and attended a St. James service, since then, the people there have become a second family to me. The groups and services at the church are inclusive and helpful,” said Joan Hemsworth. The church has an ECW and Men’s group, along with youth groups that go on mission trips, get closer to God and find ways to help others. St. James is partnered with the Spirit of Hope Soup Kitchen in Detroit and a high school El Holgar in Honduras, which a former parishioner built up. One thing the church is known for is their Rummage Sale, and Greens Market. “The best thing about Saint James is that our best days are not behind us — they are here today!” said

Reverend Phil Dinwiddie, “Our ministries affect thousands of people in the Detroit area and around the world. Our fellowship is strong, our worship is deeply satisfying, and our commitment to living the Christian life is as firm as ever. People really should come on a Sunday and check out this incredible Church. We were founded 150 years ago, but today we are a force for great teaching and meaningful action in the world.” Rev. Phil Dinwiddie also added, “It’s amazing to think that the singular vision of a single human being—our founder, Elizabeth Denison Forth, who was recently inaugurated into the Michigan Women’s Hall of Fame—could create something so wonderful that it touches so many.” On February 4, St. James held a tour after the 10 o’clock service which went over the history of the church. The music minister, will hold a music night on March 9 in the chapel at 7:00pm using the original organ.

FROM THE SUPERVISOR

Bridge History, Part Two I hope you found the history of the Grosse Ile Parkway Bridge as interesting as I did. While we all agree that it is in need of repair I do want to emphasize, based on the Wayne County engineer’s assessment, that we DO NOT expect extended closures of the Parkway Bridge. Two other bridges within By Brian Loftus the Township are also under immediate scrutiny which caused me to investigate their histories. I’ll begin with what we know about the older and more interesting of the two, the Swan Island Drive Bridge. Technically it is defined as a ‘pony truss’ bridge, a bridge that allows traffic through the truss but the trusses are not connected at the top. A recent inspection revealed structural problems that led to the designation ’fracture critical,’ or in danger of imminent collapse unless weights were dramatically reduced or reinforcement was implemented. When Wayne County advised us of very restrictive weight limits we immediately called a meeting of all parties as these restrictions would affect fire protection, refuse removal and school bus transportation. Your Township moved quickly to reduce the impact on the services we provide (and you expect). The county had the bridge reinforced within a week, although new weight and speed restrictions still apply. Now for some history. Some of you are aware that this bridge once served visitors to Belle Isle. The original Belle Isle Bridge opened in 1889, a truss bridge with a swing span opening very similar in appearance to the Grosse Ile Toll Bridge. The bridge was accessed from the east – the Belle Isle side – via a trestle roadway. The timber supports were reportedly very unpopular to boaters so they were replaced by five 88’ pony truss sections in 1899 (I cannot find any records as to the actual construction date of the sections). The original Belle Isle Bridge, with its creosote soaked timber deck, burned in 1915 but the pony truss

Two other bridges within the Township are also under immediate scrutiny which caused me to investigate their histories. sections were spared and relocated slightly downstream to form part of a temporary bridge. When the new Belle Isle Bridge (officially named the MacArthur Bridge in 1942) was completed in 1923 the truss sections became surplus and four of them were presumably scrapped. At the same time the Swan family had completed dredging a marshy area in southwest Grosse Ile and created Swan Island. The surviving 88’ pony truss section was floated to Grosse Ile on a Dunbar and Sullivan barge and installed in its present location, the bridge serving continuously since then – a 120 year old piece of engineering history. My column space in the Grand is limited, and I thank Mr. Evans for this opportunity to bring you information about our community. Historic Bridges.org provided much of the historical data and I have referenced. I will try to post some of their historic photos to my Facebook page, and you can let me know what you think about this and other Township issues. I’ll elaborate on the East River Road Bridge in a later column, its history not so intriguing but certainly as important – especially to the residents who rely on it daily. We do have weight restrictions posted for both of these bridges – not relevant for most in our passenger vehicles, but we also have a 5 MPH speed restriction. I am asking all to cross these bridges as slowly as possible – I never knew how much a vehicle’s speed could affect these structures, now we all know. And, if conditions permit, favor the east side of the East River Road Bridge, that side is more structurally intact. Please be careful out there! My best wishes to all!

What could be more satisfying on a bone-chilling winter day than a steaming bowl of a hearty soup? Kathy Levillier of Hickory Island shares another one of her special recipes, remember her awesome cucumber/blueberry/ feta recipe from last summer? This time she By Evelyn Cairns contributes a recipe for Baked Potato Soup, another winner. It’s easy and goes together quickly, too, once the potatoes are baked. BAKED POTATO SOUP 4 large baked russet potatoes 1 tablespoon butter 1 cup chopped onions (I used frozen) 2 14½ -ounce cans chicken broth 1 cup milk 1/3 cup sour cream ¼ teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon freshly ground pepper Shredded sharp cheddar cheese Fresh or imitation bacon bits Scoop potatoes from their skins into a bowl and chop with a knife into approximately ½ -inch pieces (should measure 3½ to 4 cups). Set aside. Sauté onions in butter until soft but not brown. Add broth, bring to a boil and reduce heat. Add chopped potatoes, milk and sour cream. Do not let the mixture boil or the sour cream may curdle (mine did, but the soup was still delicious). Add salt and pepper, adjusting seasonings. When heated through, ladle into bowls and top with cheese and bacon bits. (Potato skins can be saved and filled later as desired for a snack or appetizer. The next recipe, for a really robust bowl, is one from the Jewish News I jotted down while waiting for a table at Moro’s Dining in Allen Park. I’ve made it several times, sometimes coarsely chopping the mushrooms in my food processor; other times leaving them sliced. I’ve made a few other changes. The soup gets very thick upon standing or storing, so you may want to add water or more beef broth when reheating. MUSHROOM BARLEY SOUP 3 tablespoons olive oil 1½ cups chopped onions

1½ cups diced celery 1½ cups diced carrots 1 heaping tablespoon dried parsley flakes 2 32-ounce cartons beef broth or vegetable broth 2 bay leaves 3 8-ounce packages sliced white mushrooms 1 cup pearled barley 1 teaspoon salt ½ teaspoon freshly ground pepper ¼ cup sherry wine, if desired Sauté onions and garlic in oil, then add celery and sauté a few minutes. Add carrots, parsley, broth, bay leaves and mushrooms. Bring to a boil and stir in barley, salt and pepper and reduce to a simmer. Cover and cook about 20 minutes until the barley is tender. Add sherry and cook about 10 minutes. Turn off heat and let soup cool to warm, adjust seasonings and serve piping hot. Among my favorite soups is black bean, and one bowl I have especially enjoyed is popular in Florida at Columbia restaurants, known since 1905 for Spanish/ Cuban cuisine. I found this recipe on the website of the Columbia Restaurant Group, which has seven locations in the state: COLUMBIA RESTAURANT BLACK BEAN SOUP 1-pound package black beans 2 quarts water 3 medium-sized onions, chopped 2 green peppers, cut in strips ½ cup olive oil 1 teaspoon oregano 2 bay leaves ½ teaspoon cumin 4 cloves garlic, minced 1 tablespoon salt ½ teaspoon black pepper Pick over and wash beans well. Soak beans in the water overnight. The next day, pour beans and water in which they were soaked into a 4-quart pot. Bring to a boil, cover and reduce heat. Meanwhile, in a skillet, sauté onions and green peppers until limp but not brown. Add to beans with oregano, bay leaves, cumin, garlic, salt and pepper and cook over low heat, covered, until beans are very tender. Serve over white rice and top with chopped onions. Ole! HAPPY EATING!

Letter to the Editor In response to the article “Something to Smile About” in the January issue. In addition to echoing all of Cameron’s words, I’d like to add a few of my own. I have been going to Dr. Morris for about five years now and I couldn’t ask for better personal dental care. She made a complete upper denture for me and it fits perfectly and I have haven’t had any problems

with it. I’d further like to mention my hygienist, the lovely Chelsea Forsythe. Chelsea is a very caring and delightful person. She has been cleaning my teeth every four months for a few years now and I just love her personality. The last time she cleaned my teeth she went beyond her call of duty. She insisted on driving me home in that cold and snowy weather. So there it is, the

best dental care I’ve ever had and it is walking distance from my home. I can honestly say that today I actually look forward to “Going to the Dentist.” David Dyer Jan. 23, 2018 David, Always good to hear about residents patronizing our local

businesses. Thank you for the added insight on truly just how above and beyond their patient care is. Please write in with your thoughts and questions! Email: Office@gi-grandnews.com Address: 18271 Fort St, Riverview, MI, 48193

FROM THE GABLES

THE BOSS OF ME Not so very long ago there was the sound of a little girl’s footsteps rushing to and ‘fro within “the Gables.” Today however, that tyke is all grown and has two podlings of her own. But despite the happy realities of the past, still I tend to hark back to odd moments of By Mark McPherson that former time we shared together. I also found myself recalling something Kristen once said to us when she was about eight. A tad belligerent, halo slightly askew, I remember her adamantly stating to her mother and I, “You’re not the boss of me!” Reflected upon now, that childish comment, echoed or paraphrased by an undoubted legion of Kristen’s youthful peers (and nearly a generation of others since), carried with it an almost archetypal weight. For apart from all else, it represented a resounding rebellion of sorts expounded by every daughter (or son) since Adam and Eve. Consider then the impact of the words, “You’re not the boss of me.” Humorous to a degree when uttered by a child, something of its like has probably been either spoken or mentally uttered by just about anyone who’s ever felt oppressed. And the supreme irony of the thing is, usually when someone seemingly oppressed accuses their Oppressor with not being in charge of them, they probably are. Just as moms and dads are—just as one’s employer is—just as our elected or appointed leaders are—and all of them are “in charge” of Us, like it or not. But now I’ll shift gears to this month’s topic. It applies directly to the statement I’ve belabored—but this time it has more to do with my own Inner Voice. Yes, that same Providential, soulful, most confidential of small retinues which speak to us daily. But to say what? Well I’ve heeded what I’ve chronically called my “Big” or “Small” Voice for a score of items. Often the agenda here concerns a matter of conscience or key decisionmaking. You know, the sort we’re all confronted by daily at home, at work,

We begin as those little ones being told which way to turn, even as we test the waters on our own.

or out there in the wide world. But I’ve noticed something odd throughout the course of my “retirement years.” This has to do with the fact that often enough, my “voice” now gives me the option to pay heed or not. Which is to say, “it” allows me the chance to ask, “who’s in charge here?” Only for me to learn that I am. So curiously and in my supposed dotage, I’m more aware than ever that I might indeed be “the boss of me.” And apart from the extent that I feel my Creator accords me the free will to turn “left” or “right,” it could have divinely predicted my direction before the question was asked. Ergo, I am, to a limited extent at least, “in charge.” Which means, say, even as I head across the Free Bridge to leave our happy isle, I might ask, “why do I want to do this?” And often enough— and with greater frequency, the Greek Chorus between my ears says, “well, you thought we ought to cross over. But we don’t have to.” Result: I often turn around and head for home. So I guess we’re all in the same boat, really. We begin as those little ones being told which way to turn, even as we test the waters on our own. And sometimes to the point of youthful defiance. Then as we grow older we learn to accept Authority, and to submit, best as we can. And then, much older still, we often question Those In Charge, if only to learn the Great Epiphany: it’s us in charge. Which seems to imply and after so long, that “I am the boss of me.” Anyway, that’s my thinking. Perhaps I’ll send this column to Kristen as a token of our mutual long agos. Or better, so she can unfold and re-read it whenever six-year old Bella or her two-year-younger brother Christian get rebellious. Hopefully then memory and acceptance will make the difference. I know it has for yours truly.

My First and Last Valentine By David L. Dyer In the year of 1950 I was entering the seventh grade at Jackson Intermediate School in Detroit. I was eleven years old and turned twelve in October. Once again I was one of the youngest and smallest kids in my home room class. Alice Cole was the prettiest girl in that class, in fact she was the prettiest girl I had ever seen. She was the one bright spot that kept the dreariness of attending school worthwhile. She never did flaunt her beauty but she loved all the attention she received from the boys. I was in class on the day of my twelfth birthday. I kept this to myself since many of the others were already thirteen. The teacher walked out of the room for a moment and whenever that happens everyone starts talking out loud. Alice was writing in her notebook and she suddenly asked “how do you spell pumpkin?” I heard one of the boys holler “p-u-m-k-i-n.” Right away I stood up and said “no, you are wrong, there are two p’s in pumpkin.” At that moment the teacher returned. She heard all the noise and saw me standing and she said “Mr Dyer, come up front and write on the board, I will not stand up in class unless I am told to do so.” I noticed the sad look on Alice’s face as I began writing on the board. Most everyone else thought it was hilarious. She always seemed to have a smile for me even though I never did talk to her. Soon, after Christmas break came and went and Valentines Day was coming. We were told we could pass out valentines during the last hour on Valentines Day. I purchased sixteen cards with envelopes, one for each girl in the class. I put them in my lunch pail. I waited to see if I would get any cards before passing out mine. Alice then came up to me and handed me a card. It was the only one I received. I was so excited I forgot to pass out my cards. Soon class was over and every one left. I slowly walked to my locker. I reached into my lunch pail to take out Alice’s card. I looked up and she was coming toward me. She said “David, you were right, pumpkin does have two p’s and I was so sorry you had to write on that board.” I thought “Wow that was four months ago and she remembered that.” I told her that was my birthday and she started crying

and hugged me. She asked me to kiss her and I did, right there in school and right on the lips. Alice Cole was the first girl I ever kissed. After Jackson she must have gone to a different high school. I never saw her again but she has remained in my memory my entire lifetime. That was my first. There may have been a few in between but this is about my first and last. It was thirty five years later or thirty three years ago. I am now seventy nine. In my book “From Darkness to Light”, I wrote a story titled “The Most Beautiful Girl in the World.” It begins with Webster’s definition of the words beauty and beautiful. I whittled his words down to three little words of my own. “Those being: “My Wife, Janet.” The ending is rather unique Since I am not being graded on my grammar I decided to close with one single sentence. I will contain some punctuation but you will not see a single period. My reasoning is that I treasure each word and inserting a period anywhere will not do it justice. Here it is: Janet you have not only become the love of my life, you have given completely of yourself to become such a terrific mother, you began to read to David-Scott six months before he was even born, this practice became a ritual that would continue nightly for several years, I’m sure this was the beginning of whatever it was that instilled such a love of reading into David-Scott, a love that would in turn allow him to be so successful in his academic life, I credit you entirely for all of what he learned right up until the time he became more intelligent than either of us, I am so proud to say that DavidScott has recently graduated from the very prestigious Alma College, now as this never ending sentence continues, the following words go much deeper than what appears on the surface, as our Silver Anniversary approaches and as I look into your eyes today, I continue to see and feel as Webster so eloquently defined, but again in my own words, The Most Beautiful Girl in the World, Whenever I read back those words, chills run up my spine, I’ve never felt so honored and proud, to be your Valentine Love, David

Grand Prize Winner of the 4 Hour Luxury Limousine Macomb Street Raffle

Jeanette Kozel Congratulations to Jeanette Kozel on winning the Macomb Street raffle! Out of the hundreds of entries up and down Macomb Street, you are the lucky winner. Please call in or visit our office to claim your prize! In early December we at the Grosse Ile Grand launched this two month raffle with the hopes of driving foot traffic into our local businesses. First we reached out to the appropriate businesses and obtained our grand prize. Then, after producing the necessary promotion and raffle boxes, we sat back and waited to see how

effective it would be. The response from you, the community, was fantastic. Once we had collected all of the boxes at the end of the campaign, we were amazed at how well received it truly was. Hundreds of you entered amongst all of the businesses! We at Grosse Ile Grand are ecstatic about the traffic we saw generated by the boxes, and are happy that we could help promote Macomb Street businesses in this unique way. And Jeanette, enjoy your fully chartered day or night occasion in a luxurious limousine.

THE CAT NANNY

Hidden Household Hazards

It’s a dangerous world- for us and our pets. Life is even a bigger challenge when everyday household items can be deadly. From essential oils to table salt these hidden dangers need to be exposed for the safety of our feline families. Many people enjoy using scents By Susan Palmer in their homes to create a certain mood…lavender for spring, pumpkin for fall, maybe pine for the holidays, but these wonderful aromas may be killing our pets… or, maybe not. Facebook had several commentaries about people’s cats dying from them using essential oils in diffusers. It’s true that compelling evidence had accumulated that essential oils, aromatherapy and pot pourri could be toxic to cats whether taken internally, topically or simply inhaled. And a lot of good-intentioned people have posted on Facebook and otherwise shared possibly, and most likely probably, incomplete incorrect information. Certainly, ingesting oils or topical contact is deadly. It’s the science behind inhaling the oils that needs updating. In past decades oils were processed with many chemicals. Some were toxic when burned and those toxins could build up in kitty’s liver causing illness, and eventually death. Kitty may seem fine for years, then, not. The most common symptoms in cats exposed to these toxins are drooling, tremors, vomiting, coughing, sneezing, diarrhea, depression and general weakness. Be cautious when cooking with oils. Wash dishes immediately so kitty doesn’t lick the plates. When applying oils, wash hands thoroughly and touch not the cat. Oils from your hands remain on kitty’s coat and will be ingested next bath time. Store your oils up high and safely away from your curious kitty companions. That being said, oils manufactured

today are more pure- made without the chemicals- and may be safer for your felines. I spoke with Dr. Steven Poindexter, DVM at Wyandotte Animal Hospital who said the science just isn’t there to support the casual use of these new oils around cats and, if indeed, they do any damage at all. He went on to suggest that if your essential oils are truly essential to your lifestyle, take kitty into your veterinarian and discuss your concerns. Make sure kitty has a blood test to establish a base line, then in two to three months, take kitty in for another blood check. This will enable the vet to see how kitty is metabolizing the scents and if there is any problem about which to be concerned. It’s dangerous, even fatal to use dog products (shampoos, flea protection, and other items containing oils) on cats. Cats are higher risk because they don’t have as much of the metabolizing enzymes in their liver as do other animals. This means they are much more sensitive to a lot of toxins. Dryer sheets disperse static cling by coating fabrics with chemicals. If ingested, even from a used sheet, these chemicals cause ulcers in kitty’s mouth, esophagus and stomach. Toilet bowl cleaners (very harmful) may be ingested by pets that consider the toilet their personal drinking fountain. Mr. Clean, Lysol and Pinesol are all fatal to cats. Even if you mop up all the residue, the vapors linger and are dangerous. Almost all air fresheners can be toxic to your cat, especially the plugin type. Febreze seems to be the only one that is ok. Batteries, even if not totally ingested, can be fatal. Teeth can puncture the battery casing allowing toxic fluid to leak out, killing your pet. As winter continues to envelop us, be very cautious with anti-freeze, windshield de-icing agents and motor oils. See HIDDEN, page 26

‘Listening in on the Island’ A LITTLE CONFUSION In the January edition of the G.I. Grand, I wrote about Dave and Katie Hartwell moving into his parents’ home on Hickory Island. Well, there are two Katie Hartwells; but Dave’s wife goes by Kate so my item about the Hartwells Home Again should have read Dave and Kate Hartwell are home again! GREAT PHOTO OF GRAY The tribute to the life of Gray Mather that ran in the January edition of the G.I. Grand had a photo of him his wife Lee loaned to me. It showed Gray when he was active and a more By Pamela A. Frucci complimentary photo than the one that ran with his obituary in the News-Herald. That one was taken when bedridden in his later years. An item that didn’t get printed in the last month’s column was Gray’s pledge to the residents of Grosse Ile when he ran for the township board in 1972. I felt was worth repeating: “I have a special feeling for this Island and its people. I understand most of its problems and am willing to look toward their solution.” Gray served eight years on the board until he didn’t run in 1980, and I took his place. GAIL ALBIN IS OUR GRANDMA MOSES I’ve known Gail Albin since she and her husband Leon moved to the Island in 1999. I recruited them to serve on the committee to plan a big

gala at the airport for ushering in the year 2000. Leon was especially kind to my 90+ year-old mother Bernie Marsh before she passed away at age 94. Now that Leon is gone, Gail carries on with many volunteer activities, is active in the Sacred Heart Church, does quilting at St. Thomas, and has attended every session of the Creative Writing Club since we first were launched in 2009. Now Gail is a journalist with the G.I. Grand. She takes photos with a little help from her daughter Jane Fijal and granddaughter Christina (that she home-schooled through her elementary grades.) Now in her 80s, Gail’s skill may not be in art as Grandma Moses was; but her skill as a writer puts her in the same class! STRANGE FAMILY CHRISTMAS PRESENT When our family got together at Christmas to exchange presents, Jack and I gathered at our son Jay and Lisa’s home on Gage. One present I got for our granddaughter Emily, a sophomore at the U. of M., was a beat-up pot from our kitchen. It happened to be from Jay’s apartment he had 30 years ago at Hillsdale College. Now that Emily has her own apartment, I tied it with a red ribbon, and she was pleased to have a pot from her dad’s days at college. Emily said their kitchen has only one large pan, too big to heat a can of soup; so the smaller one is exactly the right size. Even though not a shiny new pot, Emily was pleased to add it to her kitchen ware---for sentimental reasons!

Lifelong Family Dentistry Teams Up with Rock CF

Lifelong Family Dentistry on Grosse Ile is very proud to announce that they will be donating $100 to Rock CF for every new patient in the month of February. Dr. Brian M Long, D.D.S. is proud to have contributed to the Rock CF Foundation for several years now. Since February is the National Dental Health Month, he was inspired to offer individuals an extra incentive to keeping up their oral health. He saw the perfect opportunity in supporting Rock CF, an organization aimed at supporting individuals with Cystic Fibrosis and raising awareness about the disease. Dr. Long is confident through his years of working with the foundation and Emily Schaller that all proceeds will be put to good use. With their annual Rock CF Rivers Half Marathon approaching in March, runners and volunteers are starting to register for another amazing day of running and Dr. Brian Long, D.D.S. and Emily awareness. Grosse Ile’s Newest Eagle Scout Andrew Elliott

Andrew Elliott aiding students in constructing their robot.

Andrew Elliott is a Boy Scout in Troop 1234, a resident of Grosse Ile and a senior at Grosse Ile High School. He recently received the title of Eagle Scout, which is the highest rank of the Boy Scouts program. Only approximately 4% of Boy Scouts ever attain this prestigious honor. Andrew’s Eagle Scout project consisted of creating and holding a three-day Introduction to Lego Robotics Workshop that was held at Grosse Ile Middle School over the summer. As an outcome from this workshop, the Grosse Ile middle school went on to form a robotics team which competed this past fall in the FIRST Tech Challenge. Elliott also helped assist the

new team as they started building their robot. For those unaware, when applying for the title of Eagle Scout and individual must hold at least 21 merit badges and complete an Eagle Scout project. This project is always something that is deemed a great value to the community. Elliott’s scouting adventure started as a Tiger Cub Scout in first grade with Grosse Ile Pack 1261. “Being in the scouting program since first grade, I’ve helped with many environmental and nature projects. When planning my Eagle project, I wanted my project to focus around a STEM activity because I’ve always had an interest in science, technology, engineering and math.” said Andrew.

High School Coach Strives to Improve Rowing Community By Cameron Colwell Scott D. Sitek, Grosse Ile Native and Head High School Rowing Coach, has dedicated many years to the development of junior level rowing. His latest endeavor in improving the lives of young athletes, took shape in the form of an educational coaching clinic. On January 20 a total of 85 individuals from throughout the Midwest, as far away as Milwaukee, attended the Inaugural SRAM Coaching Clinic at the Wyandotte Boat Club. This event was coordinated by Sitek in conjunction with SRAM (Scholastic Rowing Association of Michigan) and other coaches. The coaching clinic saw presentations from Bart Thompson of Adrian College, John Bancheri and Costas Ciungan from Grand Valley State University, Gregg Hartsuff of the University of Michigan, Kemp Savage from Eastern Michigan University and Matt Wiese of Michigan State University. Since rowing is not an MHSAA sport, SRAM was formed to hold a State Championship 10 years ago. At that time there was discussion of

Attendees enjoy breakout session for lunch in between presentations.

eventually offering an educational opportunity to local coaches, to help improve recognition of the sport in Michigan. Working closely with Pat Hickey, current SRAM president, Sitek decided to launch the clinic alongside the annual SRAM winter meeting. In terms of the actual planning, things went smoothly. Probably the most important part of coordinating the event, was obtaining presenters. Seeing such support from many

outstanding collegiate coaches in the State of Michigan helped make the clinic a reality. “Our rowing community is a little more spread out than other areas, but we knew a clinic would provide a great opportunity to bring everyone together.” said Sitek “Good coaches are good teachers and are always looking for opportunities to learn, share and improve. Events like this are a good opportunity to network with other coaches and spend time

with people who have similar passions and interests.” Sponsorships from H2Row, Vespoli, and Boathouse Sports helped make the clinic affordable for all who wished to attend. When asked if he planned on coordinating the event again, Sitek said “Yes. We think the interest and support is there to make this an annual event. We’ve surveyed the attendees and are looking at what we can do better next year.”

Grosse Ile High School Spanish Club Clothing Drive By Alex Melhorn The Grosse Ile High School Spanish Club set up a clothing drive for the Latino Family Services over the holiday season. The drive went from November 22 - December 22. The club had boxes set by the office for students and teachers to donate. The drive was a huge success as they collected about 800 donations over the one month period. This is the second year the Spanish Club has done this drive and last year they got about 150 donations

so this year was outstanding. The drive was set up by President Lindsay Miles, Vice President David Ameriguian, Treasurer Lucas Kopp, and Secretary Ryan Cuddy. The donations were delivered to the Latino Family Services of S.W. Detroit and were sent to local children in need from Detroit churches and schools. “We are so pleased and humbled by the outpouring of support for Latino Family Services. This year after speaking with Lidia Reyes, they asked us for help getting coats

and clothing. Nearly 800 items were donated thanks to the Grosse Ile High Schools community,” stated President Lindsay Miles. This has been one of the best clothing drives the school has ever had. “It is amazing that we received nearly 800 clothing donations from our drive. We got many brand new coats and pajamas to be donated,” stated Secretary Ryan Cuddy. The Spanish Club appreciates all the donation they have received and look to continue to give back to the community in the future.

YOUR BETTER HEALTH

HAVE AN EVENT OR FUNDRAISER? LET US KNOW AT 734-282-3939

I’ve Been Diagnosed with a Slipped Disc, What’s That? At one time or another, we have all heard the term slipped disc. This may also be referred to as a bulging, protruding, herniated, ruptured or prolapsed disc. Most of us may even know someone that has suffered from this condition, but By Dr. Michael Concessi, what is it actually? a Grosse Ile resident To understand this condition, we must first review some basic anatomy. The spine is made up of 24 moveable bones called vertebrae: 7 in the neck (cervical region), 12 in the middle back (thoracic region), and 5 in the lower back (lumbar region). Located between most vertebrae are intervertebral discs, 23 in all. The disc is sometimes described as a shock absorber for the spine. It is made up of two parts; the tough fibrous outer membrane called the annulus fibrosus and the inner portion or toothpaste like core called the nucleus pulposus. In reality the disc never slips out. It is attached firmly to the vertebra above and below. What does move is the nucleus pulposus seeping through cracks that can develop in the outer membrane (annulus) over time from injuries. When we are young, our discs have a blood supply which brings nutrients to the disc and have a high water content, almost 80 percent in fact. As we age, the blood supply dries up and the water content decreases, causing the discs to become less flexible and more like harden rubber, thus becoming more susceptible to injury from normal wear and tear. In fact, most disc complaints begin to surface between 30 and 50 years of age. How many times have we heard someone say “I just bent over or twisted to pick something up and felt a sharp or grabbing pain and I couldn’t stand up straight”? Is it that

easy to injure a disc? Well yes, if you consider an aging disc and all the damage an individual does over time to weaken the disc and supportive tissues. This is primarily due to poor posture, poor muscle tone, obesity, bad lifting habits, smoking, etc. In actuality the disc is extremely strong. Research studies have demonstrated that when axial loading is placed on the disc located between two vertebrae, the vertebrae will give out and fracture before the disc. This is due to the formation of the outer membrane (annulus) of the disc. However, axial load the disc and introduce flexion (bending) and rotation (twisting) and the outer disc (annulus) tears. This allows the nuclear material to push out, forming a bulge, protrusion, rupture, or herniation, which may pinch the nerves or the spinal cord in that area. A sudden occurrence of low back pain and/or leg pain (sciatica) or neck pain and/or arm pain may result. In my over 30 years of experience and with 1000’s of disc patients treated over that time, there is a pattern that follows disc injuries. I found that most patients would state that after their initially back injured, given time and over the counter meds, the pain went away, but over the years the frequency, duration, and severity of flare-ups would only increase. This makes sense, since they are getting older, are less physically fit, the disc is less hydrated, less flexible, and they continue to re-injure the area. Spinal disc problems can be extremely painful and often debilitating, but there is good news. With conservative care, up to 90 percent of all disc problems will never need surgery. The care and rehabilitation of disc problems will be covered in our next edition. Update on New Year Resolution, at minus 3lbs lost and going to the gym 3x per week.

The Byways vs. The Highways The Highway Act of 1956 Paved Paradise 62 years ago?!?! And I want to talk about that NOW? Yes. Yes, I do. It’s another facet of the same subject, and it’s worth keeping in mind if you identify with the perspectives I share relating to Big vs Small. My wife Janelle and I went to By Peter Rose Traverse City for a 3 night getaway in November. TC was inspirational for us because it is virtually all independent, and it’s a solid, thriving downtown, all manner of retail shops that are not national chains, along with the same story in food and drink. So we know it can be done, and that when it DOES work, it’s exhilarating. To get there, we took M-25 around the thumb, then route 20 to Mt. Pleasant before heading up US 127 through Clare, meeting I-75 in Grayling, then finished up on route 72 the rest of the way. You map folk will see this plain as day in your head, right? We used both highway and byway. Like everyone, we don’t have enough time to spend on the byways, but they are far more colorful and satisfying, and they take you through cities and towns, slow you down to see the real America. Have you ever stopped to consider that we can’t really live without that real America? The freeways that allowed us to get there faster were not always there, of course. Road travel used to take folks through town after town, where the speed limit drops through the downtowns along the way. Eisenhower saw a need for more reliable, faster transit routes, nationwide, and enacted a policy that changed America. The transformation over 62 years is profound. Personally, I’d hate to not have freeways, I would. And yet… Freeways sucked people out of downtowns everywhere. Freeways bypassed town after town, steering people well away from the heart and soul of the regions through which we drive as fast as possible to get to our destinations. The results are… well, when you let yourself think about it, when

you let it sink in… the results are so discouraging as to break your heart. We’ve been sold a very shiny (well, it WAS shiny) substitute for the real thing. We fell for it. We did. We followed the mall and big box developers wherever they went. We abandoned the cities we once happily, humanly populated. We’re lemmings. It seems almost embarrassing, to have gone so awry, and on purpose, no less… Wyandotte changed for the worse, and dramatically, as strip centers and malls sprang up, and the individual retail beehives that constituted it’s energy dissipated. Today, Wyandotte is by far the most vibrant independent town anywhere locally, but the truth is… the vacancies are just as depressing as the shuttered towns along Old 27 or M20 or any other byway. Thank goodness for the financial companies that have invested in the vacant retail spaces in all these cities, too. But they’re there because of the diminishment of independent retail. So, now what? All the shiny new malls and big boxes that stole all the business from the independents so long ago are failing at a rate that has all the brilliant pundits talking about retail Armageddon. All those geniuses, telling us what to think. It’s not complicated, it’s not surprising, and it can’t happen fast enough to satisfy me. ALL national retail can go. My suggestion? Accelerate it all. Shun everything that was constructed to suck all the money out of your state, your county, your hometown. It’s killing real America. It was the wrong path, and it’s not too late to find the RIGHT path. I’m talking about what needs to be done by all of us to get it back together, better than ever. It takes conscious decisions of thousands of specific individuals that want the same real and authentic that they get in the great restaurants that dot our Downriver landscape. My stores are more assertive than ever about our responsibilities in this whole thing. We don’t expect magic, we don’t expect something for nothing. We are investing and See BYWAYS on page 26

HIDDEN

Continued from page 17 All these products contain ethylene glycol. Critters are attracted to its sweet taste- as little as one teaspoon will cause kidney failure. Moth balls contain phthalene which is very toxic to both cats and dogs. Xylitol is deadly for cats and is in most diet goodies: sugar-free gum, breath mints, etc. Xylitol can also be found in toothpaste, candy, chewable vitamins and mouthwash. It’s a new year and to help you get healthy here is some encouragement: Tobacco is bad! (no surprise there). If kitty eats some nicotine from the tobacco plant or in cigarettes or patches it can cause vomiting, tremors, collapse and death. Another surprise to me was how harmful salt is. Large amounts of salt produces excessive thirst and urination, or even sodium ion poisoning. No more sharing my potato chips with Marbles and Jazzpurr!! There is hope. Companies today are making progress in producing products that are safer for our pets. Bitter flavor is being added to anti-freeze to deter kitty from drinking. Febreze and Swiffer are now ok for pets. I’ve enjoyed burning incense for years and have used many of these household products with no adverse effect to my feline family – at least not that I am aware. Although a few family felines have died young of liver disease… I have decided that the risk is too high and unnecessary. I will toss my incense and scented candles and other dangerous items. Our pets have an uncanny knack for getting into trouble and I am not taking any chances that harm may come to my family of cats. The best scents is common sense. Do your homework. Read labels. Cats are curious creatures. So are we. BYWAYS

Continued from page 25 rearranging and seeking all manner of new. We’ve never been more convinced that we can offer SO much more, and do it much better than national or internet can provide. It doesn’t happen by accident. It’s hard, and it’s FUN. If you like the idea of having far more of your purchasing being transacted with people that know your name and ask you what you want… if you want the towns that comprise

your daily life to actually BE cool cities, not just aspire to that goal, then decide to make it happen. We don’t want it to fall apart, but we have to want to light it up, make it so hot that new merchants can’t even find a space because it’s all filled and humming, with people everywhere. Let’s rock this town. Keep ALL your spending LOCAL. On the byways. If you support the nationals, they won’t go away. You don’t want THAT, do you?
