150 Years of Faith By Sarah Hemsworth

t. James Episcopal Church has an inspirational background that started before it was designed and built in 1868. The church sits back on East River Road, with a beautiful view of the Detroit River. The gothic style, Episcopal church, was created from the wishes of a freed slave, Lisette Denison. Elizabeth (Lisette) Denison Forth was born into slavery in 1786 near Detroit. Lisette’s family was owned by William and Catherine Tucker; when William died, Lisette’s parents were fried, but Lisette and her brother were still slaves. By Sarah Hemsworth From the creative minds that bring Islandfest to life, this snowy season holds a new fair, Winterfest. On February 24, the winter themed festival will be held at Water’s Edge, from the 4:00pm until 7:00pm. It will be an event for all to enjoy. The director of the Grosse Ile Recreation Department, Kim O’Farrell, and Chad Novak have been planning to bring this exciting winter activity. It will help bridge the dead of winter for residents between Island Fest and Island Glow. In hopes of a white blanket covering the ground, winter time activities will include hockey on the outdoor ice rink, snowman building contests, and relay races. As the winter air bites the cheeks of all around, there will be a bonfire and the biggest feature of the event, a chili cook off. See WINTERFEST on page 4
