Hannah’s Spaghetti Dinner By Sarah Hemsworth On April 15, 17 year old Hannah Thomas, held a spaghetti dinner to raise money for Fleece and Thank You. The fundraiser was set to start in Galloway Hall of St. James Episcopal church at 5:30 p.m. and go until 8:30 p.m. With people arriving early and staying late, it was a successful night on many parts. As people arrived early, the tables quickly filled up. Volunteers who were there to help Hannah, grabbed tables from the storage room and had to place them down the halls. While the guests mingled, spaghetti was prepared in the kitchen by the family of the former, Vitale’s restaurant. Food was brought out and the line did not die down as people were arriving all through the night. Along with spaghetti, raffle baskets and 50/50 were offered throughout dinner. The chance to win an autographed Red Wings jersey from everyone on the team, as well as a movie basket, spa basket, pet baskets and even artwork were some of the raffle choices. Before announcing the first 50/50 winner of the night, Hannah addressed the crowd with thank you’s and an explanation of what the night means. Fleece and Thank You is an organization that provides comfort to children in the hospital and brighten their days with colorful designed blankets. Hannah found out she had a brain tumor in July of 2017. After her surgery to have the tumor removed, Fleece and Thank you delivered a blanket to comfort her in a scary time. Hannah wanted to bring comfort to kids in her situation and has made blankets on her own before holding this spaghetti dinner. At the end of the night, Hannah raised $3,793 which is enough to make over 100 blankets for children staying in hospitals. Her

next project is at Grosse Ile High School on May 19 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the cafeteria. All are welcome to help make blankets and support Hannah. Many donated and supported Hannah at the spaghetti dinner; Hannah would like to thank Aubrey Beauty Salon, Southgate Animal Hospital, Wyandotte Eye Clinic, Leo’s Coney Island, Firehouse Subs, the Galusha family, the Lumley family, the Thomas family, the Camilli family, the Iverson family, Alexis Fraley, Noelle Willis, David Willis, Amy Foster, Marla Price, Joy Carevic, the Cook family, GIHS Thespian Troupe, GIHS French Club, GIHS Interact Club, GIHS EAC, GIHS Robotics, Open Book Theatre, Academi Avenue, and everyone who came to the fundraiser that night. On April 11, Hannah appeared on Fox 2 with founder of Fleece and Thank You, Nicholas Kristock, to talk about her journey and what she is doing to help others. Detroit’s Amy Andrews from the Amy’s Angels show invited Hannah and Nicholas to inspire viewers. Hannah has completed radiation and is currently undergoing chemotherapy. During the show, Kristock talked about the need for Fleece and Thank You in children’s hospitals, pointing out there is a low quantity of blankets given to each patient during their stay. Each blanket brings a different color and joy to the bland colored rooms. Blankets are easy to make as all that is needed is two sheets of fleece fabric of any choosing, and equal amounts of slits to tie the blankets together; creating a fun knot tied blanket that brings smiles to so many young faces. Donations can be placed on Fleece and Thank You’s website as well as holding a fundraiser at work, schools or through family and friends.

My Calling From God Written by David L. Dyer Three years as a deacon have come to an end, That’s not so easy to comprehend. What have I learned? What have I done? I know I’ve made friends with most everyone. So now that it’s over, what’s next on my plate? Should I wait for God to decide my fate? No, I’ve still got plenty to say… I’ll never forget, what happened that day … Eight years ago at age sixty nine, God reached out to me, It took a year to realize, since he works mysteriously. I collapsed on a treadmill and lost control and thought my life was through. An incurable disease called Parkinson’s was the start of something new. He who knows all knew that I would never give up my beer. And now that I was ner seventy, he felt the time was now here… God reached me through my late brother, Wayne. Knowing what the outcome would be. Knowing I had a story to tell, Wayne uttered theses words to me: “David, don’t give up, you must continue, Do not die with your music still in you.” Next came a trip to the Vietnam Wall, That’s when I gave up alcohol.

It took quite a while to understand It was God who put that pen in my hand. There are fifty plus thousands of names on that wall, God’s calling to me was: “remember them all.” I began writing stories, and even a book, My efforts continued whatever it took. Eight years have passed, I’m now seventy seven, I’ve been lifted from hell and I’m halfway to heaven. I’ll continue to write and take my stand ‘Til I can no longer hold a pen in my hand … This Memorial Day, please remember all of those you gave their lives for our FREEDOM.

‘LISTENING IN ON THE ISLAND’ OLD CARS ITEM IN APRIL GRAND BRINGS A RESPONSE In last month’s Grand I mentioned my old Lincoln, a friend’s old Ford, and the guy from Massachusetts who drove his 1928 Rolls-Royce car for 82 years until he died at 102. I got a response to the item from Ethel Carver who wrote that her aunt drove her 1982 Buick LeSabre until she was 99-yearsBy Pamela A. Frucci old and then turned the driving over to her daughter now that she’s 106! I HONOR THE MEMORY OF FIRST LADY BARBARA BUSH A lot of Americans tuned in to the funeral service for First Lady Barbara Bush in Houston, TX and listened to family and friends pay tribute to the wife and mother of two Bush Presidents. I remember her fondly the two times I met her. Our daughter Marti was working on the Inaugural Committee for President Reagan in Washington, D.C. and sent Jack and me tickets. We were at a concert and got a tap on the shoulder and were asked if we wanted to meet the Reagans and Bushes. We followed the young man to a limousine and shook hands with the President, his wife Nancy and the Bushes. Barbara touched me on my bare shoulder and worried that I

might be chilled. (It was January 1981.) Then later when George H. W. Bush Sr. was President, he and Barbara were in a receiving line and we walked past them and shook their hands. Barbara leaned over and touched Jack’s jacket and said to him, “My, you have anchors embossed on your jacket.” The senior Bushes have a connection with Grosse Ile since when President Bush’s plane was shot down in the Pacific, he was reassigned to the Grosse Ile Naval Air Station for seven weeks in 1945. At that time at age 19, he was the youngest pilot in Naval history. According to the book for sale at the Historical Society Images of Aviation: US Naval Air Station, the Bushes rented in Trenton but newspaper accounts last month said they rented in Wyandotte and Dearborn. I remember Mrs. Bush was asked to give the commencement address at Wellesley College back in 1990. Some of the students objected since she hadn’t graduated from college. She did, however, deliver the address and I remember reading that she mentioned, “When one of you graduates are sitting in the White House as president, your husband’s tux will be hanging in the Smithsonian as “first gentleman!” NEWCOMER TAKES ME UP ON MY OFFER TO TOUR GROSSE ILE I mentioned in a past column that I was sitting

with a newcomer to the Island at a program sponsored by the G.I. Historical Society. In our conversation I learned he didn’t know that much about Grosse Ile. I told him that in my 85 years living on the Island, I’ve given tours from fourth graders to seniors and I’d be happy to show him all the historic sites. He called the Grosse Ile Grand News Magazine to get my contact number and then called me. He said his sister and her husband have just moved to Grosse Ile and would appreciate knowing more about their new location. I gave Tim Nawrocki my open dates and times and I’m waiting for a call to firm up a date that works for his family. PALM TREE “FAIRY” IS NOT THE GARDEN CLUB The Grosse Ile Garden Club finally got a clue who plugged in the lit palm tree at the entrance to Grosse Ile near their planted area. According to the spokesperson from the club, they’ve been trying to find out who was the palm tree “fairy.” Since it was so near their planted area where they’ve now placed the rock honoring our veterans, a lot of the public thought the garden club was responsible. Other than their colorful wooden tulips, all their plants are real and grown in the ground, not plugged it.

CULINARY CAPERS Remember the Forge restaurant on Fort Street in Riverview? It was one of the most popular and beloved eateries in the Downriver area — a favorite place for meetings and special events, lunch and Sunday brunch with a bountiful buffet that included an awesome cheesecake. By Evelyn Cairns The cheesecake was so creamy and delicious that I was compelled to ask for the recipe, but my request was denied because, “we don’t give out our recipes.” “Oh, well,” I thought, “good try.” I have found that sometimes when a restaurant, or friend, won’t share a recipe, it’s because the delectable was store-bought or made from a mix. But I was sure that was not the case with the Forge Cheesecake. Years later, after the restaurant was sold and reopened, I was astonished to receive the recipe anonymously in the mail. Not only is the cheesecake one of the most delectable I have ever tasted, but also the easiest I ever baked. The original recipe called for 4 8-ounce packages of cream cheese, but I wanted a smaller cheesecake, so I adapted the recipe, cutting it in half and baking it in a store-bought 9-inch graham cracker crust instead the spring-form pan needed for the original. The next time I baked it, I used the from-scratch crust recipe on the Keebler Graham Cracker Crumbs box.

FORGE CHEESECAKE (Adapted) 2 packages (8-ounces each) cream cheese, softened 6 tablespoons sugar ½ pint sour cream, divided 2 teaspoons vanilla 2 eggs Unbaked 9-inch graham cracker crust (Tip: I softened the unwrapped cream cheese in the microwave for 25 seconds.) On low speed of electric mixer, beat until smooth the cream cheese, sugar, 2 tablespoons of the sour cream and vanilla. Add eggs and beat until smooth. Pour into crust and bake at 350 degrees for about 35 minutes, or until

center jiggles slightly. Remove from oven and let stand 5 minutes while making the following topping: Topping: To remaining sour cream, add 3 tablespoons sugar and ½ teaspoon vanilla. Stir to combine and spread on hot cheesecake. Return cheesecake to oven and bake 5 minutes. Refrigerate overnight for best slicing. READER SHARES RECIPE Lynda Van Englen of East River Road shares a recipe for John’s Scones from the May 2000 issue of County Home. John, a former chef at a New Haven, Conn., restaurant and bookstore, writes that “from day one, my currant scones outsold Stephen King.” The chef suggests cutting the dough into wedges, but Lynda rolls it thicker and uses a biscuit cutter, as is customary in England. British tradition demands jam and clotted cream as accompaniments, so I’m including an excellent substitute for the latter. It is incredibly easy and keeps well in the refrigerator for two or three days JOHN’S SCONES 2 cups all-purpose flour 1/2 cup sugar 2 teaspoons cream of tartar ¾ teaspoon baking soda 6 tablespoons butter ½ cup walnuts or currants 2 eggs 4 tablespoons milk Combine dry ingredients and cut in butter. Stir in walnuts or currants. Combine eggs and milk and add to dry ingredients until moistened. Form dough into a ball and roll or pat into a 7-inch circle about ¾-inch thick on a floured surface. Cut into 6 or 7 wedges. Place on ungreased baking sheet, brush with milk and sprinkle with sugar. Bake at 425 degrees 12 to 15 minutes, until golden. Faux Clotted Cream: In a bowl, stir 1 cup heavy whipping cream, 1/3 cup sour cream and 1 tablespoon powdered sugar. Beat with a mixer until stiff peaks form. And if you wondered if scone is pronounced to rhyme with tone or gone, either is correct. But in Scotland, where the scone originated, it rhymes with gone. HAPPY BAKING!

Children’s Place Montessori, Where Education and Fun Go Hand in Hand

M

arie Liburdi founded Children’s Place Montessori in March 2009, renting four rooms from St. Thomas Lutheran Church. Liburdi grew up in the Downriver area and believes in investing in her community. She hopes all of her hard work has a positive impact on the young children and families of the Downriver area. Children’s Place Montessori teaches children from as young as four weeks up to ten years old. Children’s Place Montessori offers a calm, inviting environment to all children. All Children’s Place Montessori staff are trained in the Montessori method developed by Dr. Maria Montessori. Dr. Montessori was an Italian physician, educator, and innovator. She developed an educational method that builds on the way children learn. As she observed young children in her first schools, she came to understand that they possessed an innate ability to absorb information from their surroundings. She named this quality the “absorbent mind.” As the child soaks up every aspect of the environment, including the languages he hears and the culture that surrounds him, he learns “sensorially,” through all of his senses. The Montessori method develops and refines the five senses, building a foundation for speech, reading and mathematics. Teachers look to inspire each student, not just to instruct. In addition to reading and listening to a teacher’s information,

children learn by actively engaging with specifically designed materials in a Montessori setting. With the Summer Camp programs beginning this June, you can guarantee your children a fun and educational experience. Each segment of the Summer Camp has a specific them with an educational purpose. These range from education on agriculture and gardening, to studying life under the sea. Both the Brownstown and Grosse Ile Children’s Place Montessori locations put child safety above all else . All staff have been given multiple criminal background checks and are required to have up-to-date CPR, AED, firstaid and allergy certification credentials. Doors are kept locked during school hours, and only children and staff are allowed in classrooms. Children’s Place Montessori is an Associate Satellite Member School of the American Montessori Society. Toddler and infant Lead Teachers hold Child Development Associate degrees, while the preschool Lead Teachers hold Bachelor’s degrees. Many of the staff are members of the National Association for the Education of Young Children. For further information on Children’s Place Montessori, please visit cpmontessori.com

THREE STORES IN ONE! Ask Marie Pucak how she happened to become the owner of Grosse Ile Pet & Garden Center and she will tell you that while owning a store such as this was not something she planned, it now appears undeniable that this is where she belongs. After a high-profile and successful career in the corporate world of the Cleveland, Ohio area, Marie Pucak relocated to Grosse Ile when her husband Rick was offered a promotion in the Detroit area. Literally left on an Island where she didn’t know anyone, she accepted a part-time job working for the Grosse Ile Marketplace in 2014. “They needed my help, and I needed them. God put me where I needed to be,” Marie quipped. In May of 2016, Marie purchased the business from the previous owners and will be celebrating her second full year of ownership this month. “I never expected to fall in love with being a store owner, but now I can’t imagine my life any different”, she said. Asked what sets her garden & pet supply apart from other comparable businesses, Marie was quick to say that their customer service is second to none. If we don’t carry an item that a customer wants, we will try to arrange to stock it. And my staff treats everyone who comes in here like family. We really have three different businesses operating under the same roof. Our pet food and supply segment, our huge garden center and our recently expanded gift section. Come in and visit us soon!

Our garden center offers award-winning plants and first rate variety to ensure your garden looks its best.

FROM THE SUPERVISOR

AT HOME ON MACOMB I want to begin by thanking those of you who read and understood my two previous articles. You are now qualified to endure self-inflicted budgeting headaches while enjoying an abundance of unrequested advice (some was actually very helpful). I am always optimistic, and recent developments on Macomb Street have really lifted By Brian Loftus my spirits. I had the honor of assisting in a ‘ribbon cutting’ ceremony at Ume Asian Cuisine earlier this month, assisted by my favorite Downtown Development Authority director, members of the Board of Trustees, many Township residents and staff and what appeared to be the entire Southern Wayne County Regional Chamber of Commerce. Beyond enjoying some great sushi the event was an opportunity for me to meet many new members of the Chamber and discuss opportunities for the Township and our neighboring communities. Some background information – what is a ‘Downtown Development Authority,’ or DDA? (Warning – technical jargon to follow.) A DDA is a mechanism to improve a specific commercial area through ‘tax increment financing’ or a TIF. Michigan law allows a municipality to designate a commercial or business area, specifically defined, to capture tax increments. In our case, our Macomb Street Business District is the defined area, and we – your Township Government- finance its development through capture of tax increments. When the DDA was formed in 1995, a baseline property tax value was identified for every entity within the district. All increases in property tax values after 1995 – the ‘increments’ are ‘captured’ by the DDA for use in improving the district. The availability of funds from the tax ‘captures’ provides the district with a reliable source of income which can only be spent for improvements within the district. Shortly after our DDA was formed, the known availability of reliable funding allowed the Township to secure a bond for the paving and improving of Macomb Street which,

at that time, was deteriorating asphalt with gravel shoulders and ditches in some areas. Clearly a big project, but the result is a paved ‘main street’ with curbs and drainage, sidewalks on both sides and street lights. More recently, we replaced the lighting system with LED ‘light engines’ (they really are not bulbs) – much more efficient and they have paid for themselves many times over since their installation. Grosse Ile’s DDA is supervised by a nine member board. The Township Supervisor, by law, must be a member and has the responsibility for appointing, with approval of the Township Board, the other members of the DDA. Almost two years ago, the Chairman of our DDA, Mr. Ron Moran, and I came to the mutual conclusion that we needed help to improve and market our business district. Following our local procedures, Township Manager Dale Reaume posted the position and the process to find a DDA director began. We reviewed resumes and interviewed the top three candidates for the parttime position. All were well qualified, but one really stood out as the perfect fit. Ms. Angela Suckokas was our unanimous choice and, fortunately, she accepted our offer. While much of what she does is transparent to most, she is very busy – fortunately she has what seems to be a limitless supply of energy, enthusiasm and ideas. She serves as a single point of contact for both existing businesses that want to expand or improve, and also new inquiries who are interested in opening a business. She instructs on property availability, zoning, parking restrictions, all the little ‘headaches’ that could deter an entrepreneur and really assists in moving such endeavors forward – Ume Asian being her latest success with more anticipated in the very near future. Angela is embarking on a project that could really affect our community. All island resident will be receiving a survey inquiring as to what you – as a local shopper – would like to see on Macomb Street. Please take the time to provide a thoughtful reply, this is yet another opportunity for you to make Grosse Ile a better place to live, work and play, plus you will be rewarded with a good cup of coffee.

SUGGESTIONS OR COMMENTS? WE ARE LISTENING AT 734-282-3939

Plans for “Free Bridge” uncertain as work begins on West River Road With only a few hours notice, the Wayne County Bridge, commonly known by residents as the “Free Bridge,” was shut down on Tuesday morning, April 24th, after a Wayne County inspection of the West River Road overpass revealed the need for the installation of support beams, according to publicly available information. The Parke Lane Bridge over the Thorofare Canal was also closed at the same time, affecting traffic flows to and from northeast side of Grosse Ile. With little time for anyone to plan, traffic surged on both sides of the Grosse Ile Toll Bridge, with wait times of up to an hour reported by some residents on social media. Traffic eased up throughout the week as residents, commuters, officials and bridge operators adjusted to the new situation. The Wayne County Bridge was reopened to traffic again five days later with heavy supports holding up the West River Road overpass. According to an “unofficial” update from Grosse Ile Supervisor Brian Loftus on his Facebook page, the section of West River underneath the overpass “will remain closed for weeks, possibly months.” This as Grosse Ile Township begins work replacing the water main and repaving a major section of West River Road which includes the section under the overpass, affecting plans in place for traffic redirection and construction on that major project. The Parke Lane Bridge remains closed with no publicly available timeline for repair or reopening. This is the latest in a story that began for many residents almost a year ago as inspections of the Wayne County Bridge revealed “structural concerns” resulting in periodic closures of the bridge and a reduced weight limit, affecting heavier trucks and many island services and businesses. Differing plans for inspections, closures, and repairs have been released several times since, with further weight limit reductions and periodic closures on other island bridges as more inspections occur.

The lack of communication between Wayne County and the Township regarding bridge and road issues is ridiculous. Plans and timelines for future closures and repairs of Grosse Ile’s bridges remain unclear, with very little information coming from Wayne County or any other public officials. One thing is clear, many residents and commuters weren’t happy with how any of this was handled, turning to online forums to vent their frustrations. “The lack of communication between Wayne County and the Township regarding bridge and road issues is ridiculous,” said one resident on the Grosse Ile Civics Group Facebook page. “It’s only a matter of time before someone dies in an ambulance on their way to Beaumont or Wyandotte sitting in an impromptu bridge delay that could have lived,” the resident continued. Some cracked jokes, directing their ire at the “No Turn On Red” sign for northbound commuters coming on to Grosse Ile through the Toll Bridge. “Tonight some crazy wild person should put a bag over the ‘no turn on red’ sign,” one resident said on Nextdoor.com. “And screw all southbound Jefferson drivers,” another joked in reply. Regardless of where residents stood before, during, or after the bridge closure, many seemed to have to have taken something from it: coming to terms with what it means to live on an island, watching news about bridge inspections and repairs more closely, better preparing themselves for future closures, and demanding better communication from public officials about all of it. When the Wayne County Bridge finally opened again, one resident on the Grosse Ile Township Facebook page probably best summed up the feeling of all involved with just one word: “Yippee.”

IT’S STILL “ABOUT TIME” There’s a line in ALICE IN WONDERLAND which states “you can’t beat time.” But the question is, can you not only inhabit, but move through it? Yet not as we all unconsciously do in our daily lives. But instead, to travel within it, as H.G. Wells and Einstein and Hawking once By Mark McPherson theorized? I’ve spent a fair amount of— well, time thinking about this. But not merely out of whimsy. For you see, I happen to live in an old house which in it’s way is a time machine. And over the course of the past three decades, it has whispered to me of its secrets. And I in turn have whispered back, and even gone to lengths to literally explore a chain of distant yesterdays. But more on that shortly. To begin with, the notion of time traveling became real to me close to midnight one summer’s eve in 1986. I had been watching the 1960 classic film “The Time Machine” and paused it for some reason. And then, walking past the grandfather clock in our riverfront parlor, I noted it was running slow. So I decided to re-set it. That provoked an unexpected bit of trouble concerning its chiming and its weights and getting the blessed thing to sound the hour correctly. Well perhaps it was the movie or the clock, but the next day I pulled one of my old editions of Herbert George Well’s novel about a chap who moves to and ‘fro through time. And I re-read it. And I began thinking and researching the matter. Now move ahead. It is now June of 1994. I am pondering my recent commission by the Islanders dramatic company to write a play for that Azalea Festival weekend. I’d decided to title it “It’s About Time,’ involving as it did Henry Ford I, Thomas Edison, George Custer, a Potawatomi Indian chief, Ransom E Olds, and the notions of a young couple who used an Edisonian machine to venture back to 18th and then 19th century Grosse Ile before returning to their modern, 1920’s era. But on the night in question, more strangeness. I’d decided to watch my vhs copy of “Somewhere In Time”

and after a bit paused it. Flipping over to the news, I was shocked to learn that the film’s star, Christopher Reeve, had just been involved in a crippling horseback riding accident. That shook me. So I decided to go out for a short drive. My destination was Elba Island and “Elba Mar,” the former manorial estate of automotive magnate Ransom Olds. I’d decided to use that as the locus of my play. So I arrived there and strolled across the lawn, envisioning the drama’s characters doing the same. Then I drove back home. After parking the car I strode across East River to the Treaty Tree site, which also figures in “It’s About Time.” I don’t know why, but I walked up and placed my hands upon the old bronze-plated monument. And as I did, I felt it vibrating! So I ambled back up “Gray’s Hollow” to our house and pondered. And as I did I studied the parlor’s mantle, which we’d purchased not long ago. We were attracted to its beauty, and were told it had originally found a home on Grosse Ile. Imagine my surprise to eventually learn that it had come from Elba Mar, and had been one of Mr. Olds’ favorite pieces! Well as more years passed I decided to pursue my time-tripping quest. Dori and I found ourselves in Britain, where we made a detour to a pleasant town called Seven Oaks outside of London. We were there because I wanted to see the building where in 1894 the young H.G. Wells wrote “The Time Machine.” At the old Victorian house on Eardley Road I shot a number of photographs. Then I made two discoveries. First off, that there was an ornate wrought iron gate between the untrimmed hedges at the front walk. Oddly, the design resembled a kind of chronological dial. Had this inspired Wells, I wondered? Unfortunately, I seem to have run out of—you guessed it—“space” here (rather than time). For that reason I’ve asked my editor if I might be able to offer my readers a “Part Two” to this saga next month? Gratefully he is a gentleman and has agreed. Whereas I am, as I’ve often said, usually to be found “on the cutting edge of Yesterday.” And as you’ll learn, for a very good reason.

I went a little crazy with the naming of my first cat: Bengali-Top- BratTinky- Tiger- A-Ting. I was five. We had adopted an ailing Siamese kitten while visiting my grandfather, who raised Siamese cats, in California. I insisted we rescue and save her. She earned all her names during the lengthy and eventful drive home, in my By Susan Palmer parents’ old Ford station wagon, all the way back to Michigan. She survived 17 years, a true success story! She only ever answered to A-Ting - when she answered at all. It was a dignity thing, her being a princess, and all… When first out on my own, I adopted Mr. Bother Kitty B. A. Cat, a beautiful Maine Coon mix and the quintessential cat. I named him Bother (because that’s the one thing he couldn’t be…a bother) and, also, it’s what Winnie the Pooh says when he’s confused or upset. I believed that when things weren’t going well, quoting Pooh, “Oh, Bother!“, would help diffuse the mood and get me some much-needed kitty lovins ’at the same time. It was a good plan and worked well. Names are important. They create an energy that will surround your cat. For a positive, playful experience, choose something simple, or classic or loving such as Buddy, Ivy, Vienna, Sammi and Dora. Of course, Tigger, Tiger, Missy and Oreo are fine delightful, everyday names, as well. But then there are those with monikers of note; most noble and accomplished of cats: King Louis V and Nosfuratu, Shakespeare and Loki for example, and one whose story just came to light: Purcell the Persian. I

had to look up this one. Henry Purcell was considered one of the greatest English composers from the middle Baroque period. Purcell, and his human companion, “Dordy” Freeman, were so pleased when Grosse Ile’s Musicale honored him with a concert of ”his” music! Then, let’s not forget those with creative flare: PurrBucket, Meowser, Meweesha, Dolce Vita, and Ciara just to name a few. These all are names with which a cat can hold high his tail and would answer to proudly. Yes, cats do answer to their names… when they feel like it. But on the other paw, there are the negative nellies; Stupid, Stinky, Pudgy and the worst name I have come across… first, let me say this kitty’s family is a very nice and loving family and they treat their cats well…and kitty was a very nice kitty, but, as a kitten, would get in trouble, as all kitties do; Dad would yell at the frolicking feline, “If you do that again, you’re dead meat!” The children, after hearing dad yell numerous times, thought it would be great fun to name the cat Dead Meat. Oh, my. Poor kitty. I felt quite silly yelling “Dead Meat” from the back porch to call their cats to dinner. Now I share my life with Minerva (who does fashion herself a Roman goddess), Jazzpurr (he has an exceptionally rumbly purr), and most importantly, Marbles, so named so that none can accuse me of not being in possession of mine…. Does your cat have a notable name? Do you have a story to tell, or questions to ask? Any ideas for future columns? Please share! Contact me at 734-676- 1468, or purrson333@gmail.com.

A MOMENT TO REMEMBER By David L. Dyer In the year of 1971, Decoration Day which had been observed on May 30 every year for over a full century was officially changed to Memorial Day. At the same time it became part of what was known as the “National Holiday Act of 1971.” May 30 became just another day on the calendar. Memorial Day became a national holiday and would be observed on the last Monday in the month of May regardless of the date. Changing that date for the sole purpose of creating a three day weekend seemed to take something away from the true meaning of Memorial Day which of

course is to remember and honor those members of our armed forces whose lives were taken during war time. Since it became a three day weekend, most people looked forward to Memorial Day for many of the wrong reasons. It was the beginning of summer, it was vacation time, it was party time, etc. I personally do not need a special day to remember all the death and destruction I witnessed in Vietnam in that same year of 1971. I live with those memories every day. I enjoy those three day weekends as much as everyone but not t the expenses of those who fought and died for our freedom.

Something had to be done. Carmella LaSpada thought so also and she founded what was known as a a moment of remembrance. In December of the year 2000 in an effort to ensure the sacrifices of America’s fallen heroes are never forgotten, the US Congress passed and the President signed into law “The National Moment of Remembrance Act.” This act encourages all Americans

to pause wherever they are at fifteen hundred hours or 3:00pm local time on Memorial Day for a moment of silence to remember and honor those who have died in service to our nation. Please join me this Memorial Day at fifteen hundred hours or precisely 3:00pm for that moment to remembers as we continue our quest of putting the Memorial back into Memorial Day.

CONTINUED from page 1 outshine all those before it. Chad has been Chairman of the festival for six years. Novak has put in countless hours, bringing new ideas and adding different events to improve the weekend every year. Islandfest 2018 will see the addition of a few items geared towards a younger crowd. Friday night offers a foam dance party. Biodegradable foam will be sprayed down on the crowd as the DJ electrifies the dance area. Saturday will feature a glow and paint neon party. Clothes will be covered in neon lights and paint, to be illuminated by the lighting. Both events are geared towards younger festival-goers. Of course you can expect the return of many favorites as well. The carnival grounds and airport hangar promise to be just as bustling as ever. Expect to see many returning vendors and non-profits, as well as new additions to the crowd. Helicopter rides will be returning alongside many local favorite bands. The Macomb Street parade will be taking place Saturday afternoon. It will be followed later that night with an amazing fireworks display. For those who don’t know, Islandfest was not always the size of an event it is today. Earnest Stanton, a descendent of Alexander and William Macomb, returned home from World War I in need of work to assist with his recovery. Stanton returned to his family farm at Westcroft Gardens and began to experiment with azaleas and rhododendrons. His work slowly changed Westcroft into a nursery specializing in acid soil plants such as azaleas. In 1984, Denise de Beausset, decided the legacy of Stanton and his azaleas should be celebrated. The first Azalea Festival took place at Westcroft Gardens that year. At the time it consisted of some arts and crafts, dancing and a parade down Macomb Street. As the festival grew in size, Westcroft Gardens was too small to accommodate the event. As time went on more of the activities moved to Macomb Street. By the second year, the Macomb Street Business Association was managing the details. It also outgrew that venue, and was moved to its current location at the Grosse Ile Airport in 2002. Being one of the largest and best attended festivals in the area, Islandfest draws in an amazing crowd to Grosse Ile. They are still accepting applications for volunteers, vendors, exhibitors and parade participants. Visit their website at www.grosseileislandfest.com and join in the celebration “Where the river ends and fun begins.”

High School Track Team Starts Season Strong By Sarah Hemsworth On April 18, the high schools Men’s and Women’s track team travelled to Huron High School for their first meet of the season. The Red Devils out ran, out jumped, and out threw the Huron Chiefs and took home the win. Since that race the Devils have raced eight times. April 27, the team travelled to Gibraltar Carlson, to race in the Marauder invitational. This is the second year in a row that the Women’s team won, with 179 points. Flat Rock was second with 146 points and Trenton, 133 points. Throughout the invitational, Grosse Ile had 14 top-three finishes on the girls team. In the 1600m Hannah Fulmer, sophomore, finished first (5:47.00) and Alisa Erickson, junior, took second (5:54.56). In the 3200m Erikson took first with a time of (12:43.64). In the 100m Skye Livingston, freshman, took first (13.8) and in the 400m with a time of (1:04.10) Marisa Swick, junior, took first. Marisa Swick also took second in

the 800m (2:35.63). In the relays, in the 4x100, Hailey Swamy, senior, Livingston, Marina Rensi, freshman, and Ashlyn Fracezk, sophomore, took third (55.42). The Red Devils took first in the 4x400, Fulmer, Madison Swick (senior), Marisa Swick, and Meghan Dieball, junior, (4:2.89) and in the 4x800 with Dieball, Erikson, Fulmer and Marisa Swick with a winning time of (10:32.00). In field events, Kathleen Christnagel, senior, took second in shot put (32-11.00). Also in field, Libby Frucci, junior, took third in dicus (9002.00). In high jump, Swamy took first (4-09.00) and Erikson also took first with (4-09.00). Long jump, Swamy took third with (15-08.5). Many more took the first, second, or third title that invitational, and the girls team took the overall team win. There are 31 girls on the Women’s track and 32 boys on the Men’s Track. An exciting spring season is off to a great start.

Lady Devils Back On Track By Sarah Hemsworth The Women’s soccer team travelled to New Boston Huron on April 20, beating the Chiefs with a 5-0 score. This game was one of the first matchups for the Huron League title. The first goal was set by Elizabeth Molnar, sophomore, within the first few minutes of the game. Before half time, teammate Rozlyn Mehall, sophomore. scored the team’s second goal only seconds before the buzzer. As the second half started, Molnar scored the third goal, while senior, Chandler Donkers blocked any shots Huron tried to pass through the net. Shortly after, Lillian Centlivre, junior, kicked the ball into the net getting the fourth goal of the night, and Mehall scored the final goal. The Red Devils have been scoring on their opponents since March and have an outstanding number of goals compared to what have been scored on the devils in return. The team this year consists of six seniors, three of which or captains, Chandler Donkers, Catherine Masserant, and Lindsay Miles. The team has 25 athletes, including six freshman players. Head coach, Amy Rossow is an English teacher for the high school. Their next home games are May 16 against Huron High School, and May 18 against Jefferson High School. Both games start at 4:30 p.m.

By Sarah Hemsworth The red curtains opened for the spring musical once again on April 20 and 21 as the GIHS Thespian Troupe put on the Wizard of Oz. The movie came out in 1939, but each student on stage made a remarkably similar performance. The first night brought out a full house, and the second night brought out just as large a crowd. Saachi Mittal, senior, starred as Dorothy as Brooke Scherer, junior, as Scarecrow, Xavier Linton, freshman, as the tinman, and Jonathan sheets, junior, as the cowardly lion followed

the yellow brick road. Alongside the main roles were munchkins, jitterbugs, crows, flying monkeys and more. Jitterbugs was a scene that was left out of the film in 1939, but the students brought to life on the stage during all three performances. The jitterbug scene includes the four main characters, coming across a jitterbug in the trees that puts a magical spell on them, which forced them to dance the Jitterbug. This playful addition to the musical kept people dancing in their seats. We meet Glinda the Good Witch,

played by Abigaile McNeil, senior and the munchkins as Dorothy lands in Munchkin land. As well as the Wicked Witch of the West portrayed by Jenna Sheets, junior. As the musical came closer to an end, the Wizard himself is revealed to Dorothy and her friends. Hunter McCray, senior, plays the role of the Wonderful Wizard of Oz. “It was such a great performance! I took my kids and they absolutely loved it. Everyone had beautiful voices and the costumes looked fabulous,” said Lisa Shannon. A special intermission on the second performance included a meet and greet with the cast. With a cast of more than 60 students, including chorus and the technology group, stage hands and leads, each performance was near perfect. Backstage hands helped with speedy costume changes, makeup application and prop set up.

The students were directed by Krista Ewbank, founder of Open Book Theatre in Trenton. Students Saachi Mittal, Emily Wash, junior, and Brooke Scherer, junior, choreographed the musical while Kayla Szypula, senior, took care of the tech team as stage manager. Hannah Thomas, junior, took care of the graphic designs. Each rehearsal took hours to get through, and the hard work of each student showed in the performance. “We really pulled it together for opening night and the other two performances! It was un staying at the school until 10 every night that week because I got to be with awesome people,” said Abigaile McNeil, “I will definitely miss all the people on stage and backstage and the colorful show.” Truly a wonderful show put on by the students of Grosse Ile High School.

Rhode Island Rowing By Sarah Hemsworth On the evening of April 11, senior Katherine Bradley signed at Detroit Boat Club to row for Rhode Island University starting this fall. Recent regattas Katie has placed in are: third place in Women’s Varsity quad at Head of the Grand 2017, top 40 out of 80 in the Women’s Varsity eight at Head of the Hooch 2017, first in the Women’s Varsity eight as well as the Women’s Varsity four at Grand Rapids 2018. As you may have noticed, I have what some may regard as a preference for independent, brick and mortar stores. One might draw that conclusion after reading a year plus of columns from me. Maybe. I always take pains to point out that it’s not just for the sake of my stores. I always try to share my love of vibrant towns. When I find it, I share it. I know that I am predisposed to feel this way; my DNA is that of a retailer, and By Peter Rose a retailer sees things through a very specific lens. I have shared tales of Chagrin Falls, Traverse City, and Chelsea. Locally, I admire Plymouth, Milford, Howell and Brighton, but there are many others that may not have the cohesive impact of a whole town, but that still have the spark that stimulates my imagination. Not once have I shared an admiring word about anything that is run from afar, by chains that are not local that replicate success, formula style. I have shared appreciation for some of the local eateries that have invested a LOT of money in their businesses. The result is a rather impressive selection of really good, really solid places to eat in our corner of the world. It didn’t all happen at once; it changed as children grow. Gradually, but steadily so that soon, if you haven’t watched, you suddenly realize how much they’ve shot up. I have a vested interest in seeing Wyandotte flourish, and several of these cool eateries have sprung up right here. It’s fantastic. Our retail sector is hurting, though. Going back several years, I recall a much busier hive of stores that all buzzed with activity, that all served the needs of the shoppers. The internet has been a contributor to that decline, for sure. Whether it’s manufacturers going direct to the customer or behemoths like Amazon, the slice they have taken has had an effect. I’m not exactly wrong about that. But this month’s article centers on a new development that I have to write about in order to articulate something powerful. When I write, I organize my thoughts, and that’s what you see each month. On April 20th last month, a new store opened in Wyandotte, and I felt a strong gust of wind in the sails. The collective ship that is Downtown Wyandotte Shopping suddenly has a new engine (and

that is how I see each individual business in a town or district - - - an engine that contributes to the greater whole). Vintage Market is not exactly new. The owners are well known, and their following is substantial. On Friday afternoon, people were lined up outside their building to attend their grand opening. I happened to be down in that area and saw the line and went to see what was happening. I shook my head in wonder, but made sure I came back later, once they were open. Again, remembering the beehive analogy, this place was cooking. Not kidding, one had to be patient, exploring the store through crowds of people that filled their store all night. I’ve been told, by the way, that since that time, they’ve actually had to shut down to replenish merchandise. Can’t sell from an empty store, after all… This is, in fact, a plug for people that need no plugging. They know what they are doing, and they do it well. They are local women, serving local clientele, and doing it with flair that can’t be done in national chains. Vintage Market has personality that transcends trends like internet purchasing. You may be able to get some of the stuff they sell at The Everything Store, but why would you, when you can experience the good karma vibe of a store that speaks to you? I’ve said that before, and it bears repeating. The mantra for any indie operator is to be so unique, so good, so obsessed with exceeding people’s expectations, that it becomes a compelling place to support. Supporting it becomes a very satisfying thing to do, then. My two stores are celebrating milestones this year. This article is never about my stores, but it is about the shopping experience. Independent apparel retail is a MUCH smaller presence today than it was in the 60s, 70s and 80s. That we are still here while so many have gone by the wayside is satisfying to me, but really, it is nowhere near satisfying enough. As we age, we get more set in our ways, more likely to recollect the good old days. There is plenty I could and do grouse about, but it all pales in comparison to seeing someone getting it right. It is inspiration, and it is reassuring that there are other people that have an obsession, too. Thanks for opening HERE, ladies!

TELESCOPING THE TOWNSHIP BIG HOUSE ON EAST RIVER UNDER CONSTRUCTION NOT FOR SEVEN YEARS BUT 12 YEARS ACCORDING TO NEIGHBOR In the March edition of the Grosse Ile Grand, I wrote an item about the huge home behind a chain link fence on East River and the length of time it’s been under construction. I was told it’s been seven years. But I got a letter from a neighbor to the property: Peter T. Ponta. “It’s been twelve years since the owner of the property sent those of us neighbors a thoughtful note that his construction “dust” would be discontinued during local school graduation parties. That was in 2006 when our daughter graduated from GIHS. There has been very little dust since!... By Pamela A. Frucci Our daughter is now 30 years of age.” To prevent such a long term delay in completing construction on a home, it’s my opinion that the township should include in the building permit a stipulation that the construction should be completed in a reasonable period of time, thereby establishing a timetable that the homeowner must abide by.

APRIL & MAY 2018 MARK TWO NEWSPAPER ANNIVERSARIES I don’t know how many people on the Island noticed but April 16 was the 73rd anniversary of the first Ile Camera, “By and for kids,” published in Heine and Dorothy Hoch’s basement on an ancient printing press by a couple of teenage girls: Pam Marsh Frucci, 13, and Pat Pittman Lafayette, 14. We published it for a year and a half. Then the Hochs took it over as a community newspaper for 25 years until it was bought by a series of publishers. It ceased publication in May 2015. Two years later in May 2017, the Grosse Ile Grand printed the first issue and this May is their first anniversary. Let’s hope it’s the beginning of a long run covering Grosse Ile news. UNUSUAL EARTHQUAKE ELICITS UNUSUAL REACTIONS On April 19, when the earth beneath us shook and dishes rattled in the cupboards, there were a variety of reactions until we found out it was a 3.6 magnitude earthquake centered in Amherstburg over in Canada. I thought it was a plane crash nearby, our son thought his furnace had blown up, and there was concern that maybe it might have cracked the supports of the county bridge. According to the National Weather Service, “Earthquakes are rare but not unheard of.” AUTISTIC SON IS NOW A BUSINESSMAN Mrs. Pam Scheinfeld saw a deal on Craigslist

expansion. Four generations of the Frucci family picked up trash along Grays Drive. Pam Frucci was wearing her mother’s jacket, son Jay and his two daughters Libby and Katie lent a hand in keeping the Island clean.

and decided it was just the right fit for their son to run a business. Rather than performing menial jobs for no pay, Alex is now the proud owner and operator of Alex’s Special Eats. Being autistic, it’s been a great outlet for meeting and greeting people and making change. He even wears a “hot dog hat” which has been a conversation starter. With the help of his dad, Dr. Ben Scheinfeld and Mrs. Scheinfeld they can haul an ice cream cart, hot dog cooker, cooler for pop, and a variety of chips to soccer fields, graduation and birthday parties, picnics and parks. The carts are hauled in a trailer and rolled off sporting a bright sign that reads: “Alex’s Special Eats.” His parents also help with the food preparation. The popular concession was launched last year when Alex was 19-years-old. It has made a businessman out of him, and he’s able to bank his profits. His parents are pleased that this outlet gives him a chance to associate with other people and earn money at the same time. ISLAND CLEAN-UP BRINGS OUT 100+ WILLING HANDS The weather cooperated on Sat., April 21 when the Kiwanis Club sponsored the All-Island Cleanup. They’ve been heading the clean-up since 1988 and back in the 70s. Volunteers and Kiwanians showed up in the morning at Northridge Church on Meridian and were treated to coffee and donuts, thanks to the church. Then with bags and gloves, 100-125 volunteers of all ages took off to pick up litter along Grosse Ile roads. On their return, 20 Hungry Howie pizzas were waiting for them. The younger volunteers could play games on the lawn, get their face painted, or there was a recycled art contest. All the trash ended up in a truck brought to the church by Waste Management. The comment was that there was not as much trash along the roads as in past years. It was mostly paper and no bottles and cans thanks to the Bottle Bill back in 1978 that put a deposit on bottles and cans. Anyone who like to see the Bottle Bill expanded to include plastic water bottles and juice containers can sign a petition: https://petitions.moveon.org/sign/bottle-bill-

WESTCROFT GARDEN’S OPEN HOUSE ON MOTHER’S DAY Opening for the sale of plants, trees, and shrubs, Westcroft Gardens, the oldest farm in Michigan still in the same family, will hold an open house on Sun., May 12, Mother’s Day. New this year for those who shop for plants is the opening of the office of Earnest Stanton, whose skill at hybridizing made azaleas and rhododendrons able to grow in a Michigan climate. Manager Erica Jackson, eighth generation removed from Alexander and William Macomb, who bought Grosse Ile from the Potawatomi Indians on July 6, 1776, has restored the office of her great grandfather and mounted the original treaty signed 242 years ago and a family tree tracing their ancestry back to the Macomb brothers. Besides being able to purchase plants in the sales area, a walk in the gardens is a treat, especially when the azaleas and rhododendrons are in full bloom in late May. MIDDLE SCHOOL 8TH GRADE MAKES ALL-ANNUAL TRIP TO D.C. Five busloads of 8th graders, accompanied by parents and teachers, made the annual trip to Washington, D.C. on March 19-23. In preparation for the trip to visit museums, Mt. Vernon, the major monuments, Arlington Cemetery, and the Vietnam wall listing all those who died in service to their country, prior to their leaving the students heard from Vietnam vet David Dyer. He spoke passionately to the class about his experience working in a hospital and that he had vowed when he visited the wall to never let their memory die with them. Each student researched a name on the wall and brought a memento to place next to the name. Our granddaughter Katie researched Dan Bullock, the youngest Vietnam war casualty at age 15. He had enlisted at 14 with a doctored-up birth certificate. Four students, selected by writing an essay, laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. All the travelers wore special shirts that identified them as Grosse Ile Middle School students, teachers, and parents. And when they got a surprise snow storm, they wore their lighter shirts over their winter coats. The 8th grade trip to Washington, D.C. has been a tradition for 26 consecutive years. The first trip took place in 1990, skipped 1991, but has continued since 1992.
