Ongoing Coyote Removal Efforts

Ever since they were first spotted by our Animal Control Officer in the winter of ‘88, coyotes have been a concern to island residents. As the original population that crossed the river has multiplied over the years, that concern as developed into a very real issue. Over the past month there were several coyote attacks on family pets reported to the Grosse Ile Police Department and Island Clinic. Many residents are calling for action, but what they do not realize is that actions are already being taken.

I spoke with Police Chief Joseph Porcarelli, who has been at the head of a trapping operation since August 2015. The goal of the ongoing operation is to not only correctly, but safely reduce the population on Grosse Ile. The Police Department has worked with the

A VERY PLEASANT MOMENT After serving the better part of two years in Vietnam, I was assigned to the US Army Hospital on Okinawa.

This was one of those Western Pacific Islands seized by American Forces during World War ll.

On a Sunday afternoon in 1972 I was on duty at the hospital as noncommissioned officer of the day.

My duties related mostly to that of hospital security. I would also help out

When the front desk clerk went to dinner I sat at her desk. I answered the phone and then began looking through a 3x5 card file to locate a patient. We were of course in the pre-computer days. While looking through that file I heard some kind of a rumbling noise coming from the main entrance which was about twenty five feet straight ahead of me.

I quickly finished my phone call and walked toward the entrance. The swinging doors allowed one person at a time to either enter or exit. There were three men coming through those doors at the same time. Two of them were dressed in black and the other was an elderly man, wearing a white suit. The door almost jammed and it

was causing quite a commotion.

When they finally entered the hospital I noticed the man in white brushing off the wrinkles on his suit caused by the other two men. I stared at the man in white who was impeccably dressed and I said “you look like” and before I could get the words out, he responded by extending his arm and shaking my hand and finished my sentence with the words “Colonel Sanders.”

What a moment that was. I was flabbergasted. On this Japanese Island, thousands of miles from home, I was shaking hands with the real Kentucky Fried Chicken Colonel. This was a person I never knew existed. I always thought he was some kind of a myth. It was like meeting Santa Claus. I soon learned the men in black were his bodyguards and followed his every public movement.

They had just opened a KFC Franchise in Naha, a large city on the north end of Okinawa. Colonel Sanders was at the hospital to visit a patient, who was a retired Sergeant and a personal friend of his. I offered him a wheel chair but he said “I just want to see the Sergeant.” I later learned that Colonel Sanders passed on in the year of 1980 at age 90. He would have been 82 years old the day he shook my hand.

Opening of the Island 2017 The weather couldn’t have been better to greet visiting Commodores and visitors from surrounding AYC, DRYA and ILYA clubs from Michigan and Ohio. The day started with a ceremony introducing all of the 2017 Commodores, a flag raising by ARMY Reserves and Marine soldiers and commencing with some words by our Grosse Ile Township Supervisor

TELESCOPING THE TOWNSHIP

When I wrote my first Telescoping the Township column for the June Grosse Ile Grand, I called the township deputy clerk Sharon Gray to make sure I had the name right of our first supervisor back in 1915. Not reaching Sharon, I left and message and called Margie Gape, the township receptionist.

Margie ran up the stairs to the gallery of portraits of past supervisors and gave me the name of R. Leonard Wilton which I used in my story. The next day Sharon called me and gave me his REAL name! She had proof in the record books going back to 1915, the year after Grosse Ile split from Monguagon

Wilton’s portrait, which has been hanging on the wall for about 25 years, got the wrong first initial! Apologies to the family, but the portrait is down and being corrected, soon to be back in its original place. The gallery goes way back to Lilly Mollisee who approached me when I was on the township board. She was traveling to Scotland and would stop in old city halls and portraits of the former mayors would be mounted on the wall.

“Why not do the same for Grosse Ile?” she asked.

A committee was formed, I remember made up of Lilly and Meg Bremer Jones, longtime resident and past editor of the Ile Camera and the News Herald.

They secured the photos of past supervisors and mounted them on the wall at the old township hall on Macomb Street. Artist Tommy Woodward made an overhead plaque resembling an airplane blade that’s mounted over the portraits. Right now that airplane blade is more appropriate in the converted hangar now our township hall!

ISLAND BEAUTIFICATION COMMITTEE HOSTS 70 FOR PROGRAM, LUNCH, & TOUR Despite a minor problem when Wayne Co. closed the free bridge for inspection the week of June 1216, the IBC hosted many off-Island beautification committees and commissions from SE Michigan on Thurs., June 15. Invitations went out to members of the Beautification Council of SE Michigan luckily with directions to the program and a map showing both bridges and the route to the Ford Yacht Club, at the very southern tip of the Island. The IBC purchased a roll of tokens to at least pay for visitors to exit Grosse Ile. The program they were treated to was “Historic Preservation” which included John Raithel, former township trustee and member of the Airport Historic Committee, who shared his vision back almost 20 years ago to convert the abandoned Naval hangar into a township hall. (The former one on Macomb Street had been taken over by the U.S. Post Office.) John Wilkie, architect and Island resident, was hired to do the job so he shared how his company took a once derelict building and made

Barbara Zuccker, who with her husband Gregg own Littlecote, one of many historic homes along East River, shared their experience bringing a home built in 1859 into a comfortable 2017 residence. Of great interest to the listeners was Barry Jensen’s illustrated talk on moving a home built in 1836 from East River Road to its current location on West River in 2006. All the ups and downs of the move and the mounting costs were shared. Also speaking was Mark McPherson, owner of Gray Gables, who entertained his listeners with a commentary about his home built by Major Horace Gray on property he bought in 1839 and Mark even shared a “ghost” story.

Giving the invocation before lunch and sharing the history of St. James Chapel was Rev. Phil Dinwiddie. He shared that St. James Episcopal Church, where he is the rector, will be celebrating the chapel’s 150 anniversary in 2018 having been built in 1868 with the life savings of a former slave.

Besides several Island residents in attendance, about 50 guests from off-Island were welcomed

by Carl Bloetscher, township trustee who also gave some background on our community. Table centerpieces were handcrafted lighthouses by IBC member Colleen Gimbel and her husband Chris.

These were raffled off at the end of the lunch along with an original water color painting of the lighthouse done by IBC member Irma Slimko.

IBC founder and longtime resident Pam Frucci escorted about 40 visitors on a bus tour of the Island following the luncheon.

The success of the program could be summed up in an email from two of the attendees: Current BCSEM president John Darin, of Wyandotte, wrote: “In behalf of the BCSEM board of directors, I would like to thank the IBC for a wonderful summer quarterly meeting…The venue was terrific, the free bridge closing was not an issue, and the speakers were all very interesting…” and from former president of BCSEM Jim Keehn: “I

SCRATCH A COMMUNITY SIGNBOARD, HOW ABOUT AN ELECTRIC ONE? When I look at a folder I have on trying to change the looks of Four Corners with its myriad of signs stuck in the ground publicizing events, I see the date 1978. Back then signs were either scattered in the ground or tacked to the then wooden telephone pole. That’s when the township planner brought a bunch of Island groups together to help design a signboard at Four Corners. None of our ideas were incorporated in the sign that went up. I had suggested a mesh background large enough to mount several signs that when taken down the woods behind would show. What went up was a nicely designed wooden sign with a small glassed-in center section that you had to have a key to unlock--big enough for one sign. One section contained a nicely scrolled name of Grosse Ile Township.

I t didn’t last long there and was moved to the township hall on Macomb and when the township hall was sold to the post office, it was moved to the temporary township hall at the airport where it finally was scraped.

Townsend Sign Company designed a mesh signboard using the same wooden heading as our open space signs. I had a sizable donation offered

by Dr. Joan Stryker and while the township manager Dale Reaume and I were looking for a location for the signboard, Dr. Stryker passed away and the family decided to donate her funds to her church.

Now 39 years later, along comes Yi Chia Schmaeman, named Citizen of the Year in 2017, who has a brand new idea for a community sign.

She has a petition to sign to convince the township board and Planning Committee that Grosse Ile should join the electronic age along with Wyandotte and Gibraltar. Not erect a mesh sign board where paper and vinyl signs can be mounted and taken down when the event is over, but pattern ours after Gibraltar’s which doesn’t blink or flash but gives you event info controlled by the city hall at a readable speed. It’s pricey, but Yi Chia is confident she can raise the money. She just needs signatures of those who are tired of seeing tacky signs stuck in the ground advertising events. She convinced me that’s the direction we should go and give up on my almost 40-year quest! See me or Yi Chia to sign a petition.

G.I. Police Reserve Openings

The Grosse Ile Police Department is currently seeking qualified applicants for the position of Reserve Police Officer. This is a volunteer position serving under the direction of the Chief of Police, and the officers of the police department. Some duties include; Crowd control and traffic direction at parades, festivals, and school events, as well as community functions such as fun runs, and biathlon competitions.

The qualified individual will possess a high school diploma or GED, a clean driving and criminal record, be at least 21 years of age and possess a CPL. Prior law enforcement experience or a certificate from a comparable reserve training academy is desired, though reserve academy training may be provided.

Interested persons can pick up and return an application at the police department front desk.

Department of Natural Resources and specialized trappers to successfully remove 39 coyotes since the program started. The trapping groups that they bring in come highly recommended by the DNR, and are efficient at dealing with the coyotes in our unique setting.

Chief Porcarelli is adamant about his responsibility for public safety.

“It would be extremely unsafe for us to go out and try to hunt this things with our patrol rifles.” said Chief Joe “It would be negligent, and that is not what we are about here. There is a correct way for things to be done.” Grosse Ile is the only city or township in Southeast Michigan with a coyote removal program. The Police Department has successfully removed large populations by the Grosse Ile Municipal Airport and the northern BASF property. They are currently trapping 3 locations closer to the center of Grosse Ile.

Changing of the Guard The annual tradition of Changing of the Guard happens every Rotary Year at over 35,000 Rotary Clubs worldwide. The ceremony acts as a celebration of the Outgoing Club President and their year as the leader of the Rotary Club. However, it is also an introduction of the Incoming President to the Membership and an

overview of the new Rotary Year. The transition happens at the start of each Rotary Calendar year on July 1. This year the Grosse Ile Rotary Club is excited to accept Matthew Honkala as their active President for the 20172018 calendar year. Aiding him this year will be Secretary Suzi Honkala and Treasurer Ron Peltier.

y the time this issue reaches your mailbox we will be in the middle of July. The waters will be warm enough and the sun will be hot enough for long days on the river or lake. Please keep safety in mind – I don’t want this to read like a safety lecture, but our Fire and Rescue Department is plenty busy. I remember a adage I particularly disliked – ‘bad

By Brian Loftus decisions lead to good stories.’ No they don’t, bad decisions lead to unhappy endings, particularly bad decisions on the water (or in aviation). A recent article reported 99 drownings in the Great Lakes last year, an 80% increase from the year before. Obviously, almost all of these could have been prevented by using better judgment and the proper use of personal floatation devices (PFDs).

While I did state that our Fire and Rescue Department is busy, – their dedication and capabilities are exemplary and they stand ready to help.

If, through bad decisions or bad luck, you find yourself in a predicament – call for help! Rescues are much more rewarding and take much less time than recoveries, so please, call for help if you find yourself in need.

Grosse Ile’s coyote population has been in the news all too often lately.

Let me begin with some responses to the ‘suggestions’ sent my way – all wildlife in the state, including predators, are under the management and protection of the Department of Natural Resources. This is the same DNR that has enabled the return of Bald Eagles (almost extinct), Canada Geese (once endangered), and the Gray Wolf. Believe it or not, White Tail deer were once eradicated within our state – hard to believe with the numbers we see daily. Unlikely we would see any of these beautiful creatures in the wild were it not for the efforts of the DNR and conservation minded citizens.

For most of the 20th century, coyotes were a rarity on our island, and were rarely, if ever, seen anywhere in southeast Michigan. Restrictions on hunting and the abundance of food in suburban and rural areas opened ideal habitats for this resourceful predator, and we continue to see the expansion of

the very adaptable Canis Latrans.

Like most canines, coyotes will eat almost anything. In the wild, mice are their primary food source, and to some extent we unwittingly supply them with mice. When you overfill your bird feeder or scatter corn for ducks and geese, you are inviting the mice also.

It takes almost no time for a coyote to find (and eat) these mice, but when the mice are gone and his hunting territory has been established, any other small mammal smaller is now prey. Public Safety will be making more preventive or deterrent information available soon.

Some happier news – IslandFest 2017 was a remarkable success. Thanks to our Festival Commission, a number of donors, dedicated volunteers, and the support of the entire community, IslandFest ended ‘in the black’ for the first time since long before I have been Supervisor. Well done, all!

The inspection of the Wayne County Bridge (the not-so-free bridge) is mostly complete except for compilation and review of the data. A special thanks to Chief Porcarelli for taking proactive steps to move traffic and to Wayne County’s staff for allowing the bridge to remain open during peak travel times.

We are expecting the final report in September (remember, there is a lot of data to evaluate), at which time we will formulate whatever plan we need to go forward. You will have results as soon as I do.

Angela is really making progress on Macomb Street, new shops and new ideas so spend some time there. Rumors of this store or that business closing are just that – rumors, we have heard nothing from any reputable source. Let her know what you think of the flowers and banners, we are also considering a program to help improve some existing businesses, more details to come.

Your entire Township staff, along with the volunteers within the commissions and committees are working hard to keep Grosse Ile the finest residential community in Michigan, but we can always use more help (volunteer!) Ghandi put it succinctly: “Be the change you want to see in the world.” I can’t improve on that.

Construction Takes Over the Schools

By Sarah Hemsworth The morning of June 6, students attending Grosse Ile schools received a phone call reporting no school due to a water main break. In the high school parking lot, not more than 20 feet from the building, the water main broke causing the schools to be closed. The water in the high school had to be shut off in order to fix the issue. As the school did not have water, lunch could not be prepared properly, which led to the students day off. In the last few months there have been three breakages; the most recent is currently being replaced.

“The reason for the breaks is due to old lines that have been deteriorating over the years. With that said, the

recent bond issue provided funds to replace the lines leading into the high school,” said Paul Szymanski, high school principal.

The parking lot in the high school is set to be redone in the summer of 2018. Current construction in both the high school and middle school include new lockers and equipment.

Faster internet along with new desktop computers are to be put in by the end of the summer. The hallways are to be gutted before the placement of large functioning lockers are put in.

Other work will be done this summer and as the year goes on. Funding for these projects are possible due to the grant passed in May 2016.

Rotary Club Glowing and Rolling All Summer Last week you could spot 62 riders exploring the northern half of Grosse Ile as the sun began to set Wednesday evening. The Grosse Ile Rotary Club’s bimonthly Glow Roll has seen great success this Summer, and hopes to see more riders coming out. “Glow Rides leave from various locations , we like to share with various restaurants the opportunity to introduce new customers to their establishment.” said President Elect John Burgan “The next location will be announced on Facebook.com/

tourdeile for the July 19th Ride.”

The real ambition behind launching the Glow Roll event, was to help build community interest in the Annual Tour de Ile taking place this Fall. The theme for this year’s Tour de Ile is healthy living. The Rotary Club is currently looking for more volunteers to help run the event, as well as additional sponsors. Eye of the Graduate And their off! 163 students celebrated the completion of their high school careers on June 8th. The ceremony was held at the Grosse Ile High School gymnasium and lasted two hours.

By Sarah Hemsworth the family and friends of the graduating class and thanked everyone involved in the students’ 13-year process of school. After her warm welcomes, Lopez introduced the high school principal, Paul Szymanski.

Szymanski thanked the students for making his first year at Grosse Ile High School a great one. His speech involved a philosophy for life. Reminding the students of the importance of putting the things that make your life full first: your family, friends, health and favorite passions. Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness.

Szymanski then passed on the podium to the class valedictorians and salutatorians.

Jennifer Chao ‘17, valedictorian, reminds the class of the changes they went through together; going from “meridiots” and “parklamers” to all one school, studying for the ACT to having to take the brand new SAT, the class of 2017 went through a lot of changes. Together they walk across the stage, one last time as a class, to receive their

diploma.

One by one, the students walked up the steps toward the podium, where their names had been read to the crowd of family and friends.

“The butterflies you get walking up the steps as everyone is watching you is unreal. This is it; the time has finally come where you no longer have to go to high school.

You finally become a graduate, and all the hard work is worth it,” said Caleb Counts ‘17.

After the diplomas had been passed out, Szymanski prepared the students for the moving of the tassels. The right of the caps represents high school students, and the left is shown as a high school graduate. The students jumped in the air throwing their caps and chanting the fight song.

These students futures are just beginning, congratulations class of 2017.

Railroad paves its way through residents back yard

By Cameron Colwell On July 23 Janice and Jim Acker are opening their home to the public and putting one of their lifelong passions on display. In the early 2000’s the couple hired landscaping architect Paul Busse, best known for his work with Botanical Gardens in New York, to design a G-Scale Train and Herb Garden that spans from Pennsylvania to Indiana. Shortly after the ground work was done, and the J & J Heritage Railroad was erected. Although it took many more years to flesh out the beautiful herb based scenery, the couple is ready to share their project of passion with the community alongside many others in surrounding areas from the Lakeshore Garden Railway Club. Janice and Jim can be found on 7984 Stout Avenue, there is no charge and the event runs from 10:00am to 4:00pm.

Now is the time to “Go Blue” — for blueberries, because July and August are the peak months for harvesting the berries in Michigan, which leads the United States in growing the fruit.

Not only are blueberries delicious and versatile, but, according to the United States Department of

Just one serving provides a vitamin C bonanza (almost 25 percent of the daily requirement), and one cupful contains only 80 calories.

Michigan blueberries won’t be available until the middle of this month, but in the meantime, here are a couple of recipes to enjoy with outstate berries.

Shares recipe The first recipe is for an unusual and easy coffee cake shared by Kathy Levillier of Hickory Island from an exceptional cookbook titled “Best of the Best from Alaska.” The cookbook features kitchen-tested, user-friendly recipes chosen from 56 leading cookbooks published in the state.

The batter is refrigerated overnight and baked the next day. I made the coffee cake and thought it was delicious.

OVERNIGHT BLUEBERRY COFFEE CAKE 1 egg ½ cup plus 2 tablespoons sugar, divided 1 ¼ cups flour 2 teaspoons baking powder ¾ teaspoon salt 1/3 cup milk 3 tablespoons butter, melted 1 cup fresh blueberries In a mixing bowl, beat egg and ½ cup sugar. Combine flour, baking powder and salt. Add alternately with milk to sugar mixture, beating well after each addition. Stir in butter. Fold in berries.

Pour into a greased, 8-inch-square baking pan. Sprinkle with remaining sugar. Cover and chill overnight.

Remove from refrigerator 30 minutes before baking at 350 degrees for 30 to 35 minutes.

LEMONY BLUEBERRY MUFFINS 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour ¼ cup sugar 2 ½ teaspoons baking powder ¾ teaspoon salt 1 well-beaten egg ¾ cup milk 1/3 cup cooking oil ¾ cup blueberries 2 tablespoons sugar 1 teaspoon grated lemon rind 1 tablespoon sugar 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon Thoroughly stir together flour, ¼ cup sugar, baking powder and salt.

Make a well in the center. Combine egg, milk and oil. Add all at once to dry ingredients. Stir just until moistened.

Stir in blueberries, which have been combined with 2 tablespoons sugar and lemon peel. Fill greased or paperlined muffin tins 2/3 full. Combine 1 tablespoon sugar and cinnamon.

Sprinkle over batter. Bake at 375 degrees about 25 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Makes 12.

Today’s tip Freeze blueberries while they are at their peak so you’ll always have them on hand for adding to muffins, pancakes, smoothies and other recipes.

Here’s how, according to the experts at Leduc Blueberries in Paw Paw, one of the largest blueberry farms in Michigan: Wash well, discarding any bad ones, and let them dry. Place berries on a cookie sheet with a lip, separated in a single layer, and freeze for 24 hours.

y now, it might be occurring to you that I am against shopping at operations that are Wall Street based, be they national chains or internet sellers. I’m not antiWall-Street per se, but because more money circulates in the area in which I live and work and play, I selfishly choose “local” as often as possible, and that benefits ME. I think most of

When I joined the world of retail as a career, my stores were part of a network of independents across the nation, and nationals were virtually nonexistent. During this past 45 years (!), local stores have mostly been supplanted by publicly traded entities. The vast majority of locals are gone, and now those nationals are all collapsing, because what they offer isn’t good enough to compete against the Amazons of the world, and there isn’t enough demand, anyway.

Lousy retail caused the elimination of excellent retail, and is now imploding into itself, as it should.

I feel so sorry for them (yeah, right). As bad as they felt about taking away the market from the family businesses that preceded them.

So many nameplates are gone, lost to “progress” brought about by malls and national chains to fill them. A few locals survived, and a few brave souls open new operations, but the percentages are shrinking fast.

The rallying cry has to be survival of the fittest. But the fittest means the wealthiest; wealth from investors that, essentially, are betting on a hefty return from the proposition that existing businesses will be outspent and will fail. Ka-Ching for the investor, calamity for the regions in which those investors live, work, play and raise families. Here again: A massive disconnect between actions and results has taken place.

I love finding a new, local restaurant that surprises and satisfies, don’t

you? Nice, appreciative service, cool environment with particular quirkiness, as opposed to a calculated cookie cutter format that is duplicated to excess. It is a better experience that I seek, and I get satisfaction in rewarding them and enabling their success and growth.

While I would be happy for Bell’s Beer owners if they cashed out and captured a healthy reward for their efforts to create something better than was there before, I would get much less pleasure out of drinking said beer that was now just another name-plate under the Budweiser banner. I’d seek the next effort!

Kerrytown in Ann Arbor, all local, is energizing. Walking through any mall at all is depressing, one innocuous format after another, all designed to get me to buy for the sake of buying. “Lifestyle Centers” don’t fool me, either - 100% corporate.

Don’t we all want more authenticity?

So, yeah, no question, I have a bias. My intent in this column is to get even one more person to agree about these points, and to make more conscious choices that reward uniqueness and grass roots capitalism over predatory formulaic invasions that destroy capitalism for CAPITALISM. My stores are included in my mission, but it is a nationwide scourge that I seek to push back against as hard as I know how.

History is about people, as well as where they hang their hats.This year our nation and our island are both turning 241. Quite a sage and respectable age, despite the fact that many of our peers may be older, with a larger claim on antiquity.

Nevertheless, our American homeland exists, after being wrought out of travail and

By Mark McPherson repression and dissent and violence. Odd, sadly, things have not changed over much, have they?

Here on our “Big Island,” so dubbed by the French who liked “La Grosse Ile” in preference to the native “Kitchiminishen,” things have changed even as they’ve remained the same.

Fortunately however, and within these shores, the revolutionary and innovative and conservative spirits of our forefathers linger still.

And speaking of dwelling, I was having another imaginative palaver the other evening with my ghostly friend and landlord, Major Horace Gray. I’ve mentioned him to you before, I believe.

Entrepreneur, politician, Federal Indian agent, Detroit lawman and serving officer in the “Sabre Brigade” at Chattanooga and Chickamauga. Also, “the Major” built his eponymous “Gray Gables” around 1846 on more than 600 island acres. And from that riverfront base he farmed, sailed, galloped, bought, sold, and even established our “main street,” likely making him this isle’s first real estate agent.

Major Gray was quite the learned chap. He savored Shakespeare and history and in his dotage came to resemble a white bearded Biblical patriarch. He also obviously loved this “sceptered isle” of his, and surveyed its history with an eagle’s eye. This was brought home to me, quite literally the other night. I’d thought about how much things hereabouts have changed. As I looked beside me, my mind’s eye clearly conjured the familiar shape of my friend in his rocker. He seemed to be master of all he surveyed, from the evening stars hanging low to the white wafer of moon spilling its ribbon-like glow from Stony Island to our riverfront shores.

Meanwhile, down below and unseen in the shallows we could hear the ducks

honking about, and from somewhere in the faraway there were strains of music being telegraphed across from the Amherstburg side.

“Yes, it’s different, but always the same” said my companion. “Yet despite the years, in my memory it’s always a kind of oasis. ‘76 was the start of a good many changes, and not all of ‘em good.

And as the outer world altered, so did we.”

I thought about my spirited friend’s observations. Yes, “changes.” One revolutionary war, followed by another that was hardly civil, succeeded by still another many thought would end all such future conflicts. But it didn’t. It was just the preface to an even greater martial melee, into which many of Grosse Ile’s patriots left home and hearth to fight for liberty. Then a brief bit of peace before an Asian campaign and then another, followed by a series of desert skirmishes of seemingly Biblical origin. Sadly enough, those had not been the end. But only, as Churchill once observed, “the end of the beginning.”

“But for all its warts and its quirks, our island home is still a rare place” I heard him also observe.

“And as ever, that’s largely because of the people who live between these shores. They’re the ones who came here to live and love what is left of the wilderness. They’re the folks who don’t frown when you feed the deer out back in what’s left of my woods. Or when you get out there on the water, remembering that where those giant freighters now go, there were once birchbarks and flatbeds, masted corsairs and brigantines. And hanging above all of those memories, up there I think the heavens are the same.”

Later I considered that my most recent chat with “the Major” was a perfect way to celebrate another nativity for Grosse Ile, Michigan. For her sins, she still sits fast like an emerald in the setting of these ever-flowing waters.

And upon it are its people and its creatures, and its God-given growing things which no man owns, despite his titles or his property lines. And as ever, somewhere beyond or beside those things, the ghosts of those bygone days still linger.

So, with that said, a very Happy Birthday, Grosse Ile.

Special to the Grosse Ile Grand When considering living on an island, Michigan wouldn’t be the first place you would think to live. But here in Grosse Ile, our residents think it’s the best place to call home! We have our wonderful mainland on our west side and our friend Canada on our east side.

Grosse Ile Golf and Country Club offers many different things to our members. But one that stands out to many of us that have children is a pool, and more importantly, the opportunity to take swim lessons!

Swimming is a very important and lifesaving skill to have when you’re surrounded by water, and have access to hundreds of bodies of water across Michigan, not to mention countless wave pools and swim resorts!

GIGCC Head Swim Coach Max Monas, and his assistant coaches and staff work hard to make sure that every member enjoys themselves and that they are safe while at the pool, or when they are away at a wave pool or enjoying our many bodies of water across the state.

And that safety starts by offering swim lessons to our youngest of club members, with individual or group swim lessons.

MEET THE SWIM TEAM! We’re very excited that our swim team has grown over the years, to more than 125 kids for the 2017 swim season! We offer many options for different levels of experience. Our Mini Rays is ages 3-5. If your child isn’t ready to compete and would like to brush up on their skills, we offer the Pre-Team. The next step for your swimmer the competitive Devil Rays swim team that competes against other teams in the MICSA league (the Michigan Inter-Club Swimming Association), with six meets a season.

Also, they compete in the annual swim finals, bringing together the 14 MISCA swim teams, in July.

The Grosse Ile Golf & Country Club Swim Team has been a part of the Michigan Inter-Club Swimming Association since 1958, and will celebrate its 60th year of membership in 2018!

The first swim meet of the season was June 27 and was hosted by Detroit Yacht Club on Belle Isle. We brought the first win of the season home with a 634 against DYC’s 530.

The second meet was June 29 and was hosted by Edgewood Country Club in Commerce Township. We were hoping to bring another win home to GIGCC. At the end of the meet, the points were tallied and the outcome was GIGCC 627-ECC 530.

July also had us hosting three home meets, where we honored our senior swimmers Kathleen Christnagel and Libby Frucci.

We are very proud of our team.

They work hard at practice, aiming for their goals of teamwork, camaraderie and fun and never giving up. The team practices 6 days a week, showing true commitment.

Parke Lane School Pround to Show Their Banner

Thanks to former kindergarten teacher and member of the Island Beautification Committee, Colleen Gimpel has worked with the administration, students and staff of Parke Lane Elementary School to earn the right to hang a Green School banner at the school. Mrs. Gimpel credits Marie Pucak, owner of the Grosse Ile Pet and garden Center, for generously donating the flowers, peat moss, and even a solar fairy to decorate the butterfly garden the kids planted in the school courtyard.

The garden has been certified as an official Monarch Waystation which will appear on a Waystation map. The number of monarch butterflies has declined due to lack of habitat. The children utilized coffee chaff, donated

by Grosse Ile Starbucks, as a natural fertilizer to avoid using harmful chemicals on the garden.

Another project was designing solar ovens to cook s’mores. Thanks to a generous donation of pizza boxes from Hungry Howies, the boxes were used for the kids to enjoy that tasty treat after hearing a talk from Mrs. Gimpel about the advantages of using solar energy over other energy

sources.

To learn the importance of recycling, second graders collected all of the recycled paper bins once a week, and ink cartridges are recycled at the school as well. Recycled objects were also used to create works of art during art classes. Students also participated in The Great Backyard Bird Watch, counting and recording various bird species seen around the building and submitted their tallies to the Audubon Society.

Without the help from Island businesses, Mrs. Gimpel says Parke Lane School would not have been able to earn its Green School status. Plans are already underway for expanding Green School programming at Parke Lane Elementary for the 2017/18 school year!

Mrs. Gimpel is enjoying an active retirement having seen to it that a little red school house full of reading books is a handy library located along the bike trail at the Public Safety Building. Gurney’s Hockey Journey

By Alex Melhorn Xan Gurney has had an unbelievable 2016-2017 hockey season.Gurney is only a junior at TPH High School. He previously went to Grosse Ile High School before switching to TPH High School for the hockey program there. TPH stands for Total Package Hockey.

Gurney got drafted into the OHL (Ontario Hockey Season) by the Barrie Colts. He was also drafted into the USHL (United States Hockey League) by the Chicago Steel. These are great accomplishments for such a young kid.

Gurney received a college commitment from Western Michigan University and will attend Western after High School.

His main team is the Compuware U16 AAA Tier 1 Elite. With Compuware, the team won all five major tournaments. They won the league they were in, the league playoffs, the “State Championship”, and went on to Pittsburgh and won the “National Championship”.

While Gurney was about to catch a plane to go to Florida with his

family for vacation, he got a call the play for the Chicago Steel to play in the playoffs with them. Gurney immediately got on a plane to go to Chicago to join the team for the playoffs.

With the Chicago Steel he played at the “Junior” level. There he won a second “National Championship,” and the winning of the Clark Cup, the symbol of supremacy in American junior hockey.

Gurney has had an unbelievable hockey season and hopes to continue his success at Western Michigan University. He eventually hopes to get drafted into the NHL which has been a lifetime goal for him. NHL scouts are already looking at him and he is only 17 years old.

“It was just an unbelievable year for me, such a great feeling,” stated Gurney. Gurney’s grandfather Don, has supported him through it all and hopes he continues his recent success.

Gurney will have to work very hard if he wants to take his game to the next level.

Birthday CONTINUED from page 1 of the Macomb brothers from the Potawatomi. After owning the island for fifteen years, Alexander decided to migrate east, so William bought out his brother. Alexander took his share and purchased 6,620 square miles of New York State. William later earned the title General Alexander Macomb.

His strategic ability lead the United States to victory in the Battle of Lake Champlain during the War of 1812. As a result, Macomb County was named after him.

According to Westcroft Gardens manager, Erica Jackson, it’s wasn’t until 1811 that President Madison ratified the official treaty between the Potawatomi Indians and William Macomb’s three sons. This is when the family was officially recognized by the United States for the ownership of Grosse Ile. The signing of the official treaty took place in the Westcroft office.

David Macomb, son of William, owned the majority of the island until he ran into financial difficulties.

As a result, he sold the property to his cousin John Anthony Rucker II. Rucker promptly constructed the large white house which is still located on the north entrance of Westcroft, on West River Road, according to Jackson.

“At this time the farm was primarily used for hay farming which was supplied to the horses that pulled the Detroit trolleys,” says Jackson.

Rucker’s wife never took too kindly to living on an untamed island, so Westcroft was sold to his cousin Robert Lee Stanton. Stanton, who

was the godson of General Robert E. Lee, honored his family’s history and returned his widowed Alexandrine Macomb Stanton, the daughter of General Alexander Macomb to reside on the island, according to family records.

Aware that Henry Ford’s invention of the horseless carriage was inevitable and that hay would no longer be in high demand, the family knew they had to diversify their crops, so they took advantage of the acidic soil and transformed the acreage into a profitable nursery. The botanical nursery specialized in azaleas, laurels, dogwoods, and rhododendrons, to name a few.

Over the years, the farm has changed hands through the various family members. “I recently took over the farm after my Aunt Denise De Beausset retired,” stated Jackson.

“We will continue to look for ways to utilize the soil we have here to grow new plants and to keep our family farm thriving.”

Jackson, whose great grandfather, Ernie Stanton, was the last sole owner of the farm, invites the public to come and learn about the island’s history through documents they still have hanging in the office.

The public is welcome to stroll through the beautiful gardens all year long, come into the office where the original deed still hangs, and view the aerial photos of the island.

“The gardens are a beautiful backdrop to have a wedding,” says Jackson, “and this is the sixteenth year we have offered Halloween hayrides in the the fall. We hope if people haven’t experienced our farm yet, they

will come see us soon.”

When asked to reflect on the farm’s history, Jackson stated, “When I think about Westcroft Gardens, I think of it as two-fold personally. I recognize our history is incredibly important, but I also want to remind people in town that we are a locally run business who need the support of our community.”

As life expectancy in the United States continues to increase for both men and women, how will we face it? Will it be an inactive lifestyle, sitting in your favorite recliner, watching TV and

George Burns (who lived to be 100) used to say “You can’t help getting older, but you don’t have to get old”. What he meant was that aging is unavoidable, but there’s no reason you can’t slow down aging process and make the journey of life more enjoyable. The roadmap for this is through Exercise. It is best to begin this journey early in life, but it is never too late to start and the benefits of exercise can be seen at any age.

Getting and staying active has been shown to boost your immune system, thereby preventing or reducing the chances of disease and the pain and symptoms associated with it. Helps to boost your energy, protect your heart, and maintain your weight. Exercise has also been shown to improve one’s memory and decrease depression.

Remember exercise doesn’t have to be strenuous nor long to be beneficial.

Ideally, 150 minutes a week of moderate activity should be good.

That amounts to 5 days a week for only 30 minutes per day. This can be separated into 10-15 minute exercise periods for 2 or more times per day.

Exercise for seniors should be a balanced plan of: Cardio/Endurance training helps reduce shortness of breath, fatigue and increase circulation and oxygen to the brain. Allow 3 -5 times a week for a minimum of 15 minutes. It can include walking, swimming, elliptical, cycling, rowing, tennis and dancing.

in part on an individual’s physical condition. Certain equipment such as elliptical trainers and swimming pools place less stress and pressure on joints.

Flexibility training helps keep the body limber, ligaments and muscle tendons flexible and joints freely moving through a full range of motion. Stretching exercise and Yoga are excellent means of improving and maintaining flexibility.

Tone/Strength training builds muscle mass, prevents bone loss and prevents stress on individual joints. Allow 3 times per week for a minimum of 30 minutes. Going to the gym is one way, but you can do everything without ever stepping into a gym again. A few free weights, resistance bands and tubes, and household items will all work well.

Also isometric core stabilization exercises will help to strengthen your lower back.

Balance training improves posture, balance and stability. This helps reduce the risk of a fall, which may result in a fracture or injury. Tai Chi, Yoga, balance ball and one leg balancing exercises are all excellent methods to improve overall balance.

Another quote of George Burns was, “If I knew I was going to live this long, I would have taken better care of myself”. Don’t be the individual that wishes they had taken better care of themselves. Remember these should be your Golden years not your Rusty years! There is a Fountain of Youth and it is called exercise!

Washington passed away in late 1799, before the White House was completed. John Adams became the first president to live there, one year later. (Yahoo News) n The White House basement doesn’t just have meeting rooms. It’s lined with rooms including a bowling alley, a flower shop, and even a dentist’s office. (SuperCompressor.com) n The “temporary” West Wing: The famous room known as the West Wing was never meant to be. It started out as a temporary office for President Theodore Roosevelt, but it expanded into a permanent residence under President Taft and President Franklin Roosevelt. Taft moved the Oval Office to the West Wing and the rest is history! (Yahoo News) n It wasn’t called the White House.

Can you imagine calling The White House by any other name? Well, before Teddy Roosevelt, it was called many other things. The famous home was once called “The President’s House”, The President’s Palace” and “The Executive Mansion.” It officially became “The White House” in 1901. (WhiteHouse.gov) n The White House was rebuilt after the War of 1812. The British set fire to The White House in 1814. Before escaping the burning White House, Dolley Madison insisted on saving a

portrait of George Washington. It is said that she thought someone was taking too long rescuing the painting so she broke the wood and took out the canvas. The painting that she rescued was actually a copy of the famous portrait by Gilbert Stuart.

The piece has a book with the title, “Constitution and Laws of the United States.”The typo isn’t a mistake – it was intentionally done to show that the painting is a copy of the famous original. Sharks take over the river On a freighter leaving Lake Nicaragua a large bull shark is dropped in the bilge. There are two surprises, the fish is not dead and she is pregnant with twelve live born sharks. The sharks survive on a host of bilge rats on their voyage North to Lake Erie.

On the way to their last stop, Detroit, the ageing ship strikes a hard rock shoal off of the coast of Ohio. The twenty foot gash in the hull opens a new and existing world to the sharks, which are nearly a year old due to repairs and legal problems of the ship’s

owners. The sharks first explore and feast voraciously on the local walleye and steelhead trout populations. The fresh water and their internal cycling of it puts their metabolism on steroids. These factors cause the sharks to grow at an unattainable rate in nature. The spring brings a new world to the sharks, where there is other food than walleye and trout; there is a new food source abundant upon the surface, a mammal with salt sweat and warm flesh. Finding Fun on Grosse Ile

By Gail Albin There are many Grosse Ile events going on daily. It helps if you know where to find them. The new Grosse Ile Grand is an excellent source for ideas for summer fun. Channels from the G.I. Rec Dept. has 23 pages of indoor & outdoor fun, cards, golf, swimming, lunches, & so much more.

When I was in my mid 60’s, a family member urged me to learn computer & I am so glad that I did. Now I can research on the internet to look for fun activities and many other topics from my computer.

Go to Opportunity Grosse Ile on Facebook, there are many happenings going on for all ages. There was a guest in my home for three days and

she went kayaking. The starting area is just off West River Road south the Wayne County Bridge. A group meets there weekly (advance reservations for kayaks are available). She biked with her aunt and uncle on Grosse Ile bike trials.

She also toured around the island.

At a brief stop at the local bakery, she was greeted by many friendly people who meet there often. A visit to the Gibraltar Bay Alpaca Farm was perhaps her favorite event. It is an unusual sight to see over fifty of these rarely seen animals. They were as interested in us and came close for a gentle pat.

The outdoor concerts begin soon.

On July 3 it’s “What it means to be an American.” In May it was to write a bedtime story for a small child but in June it was “Fun is…” I wrote about a children’s book our mother read to us about Ferdinand, the Bull whose idea of fun was sitting under a tree and smelling the flowers. I hadn’t seen the book for about 80 years so just for the fun of it, I ordered it online. In the memo that came with the book I found out it was written in 1936 and 14,000 books were sold for $1. By 1938 3,000 books were sold a week and it became the number one best seller in the U.S. outselling Gone with the Wind! It’s never been out of print and in 2014 a first edition copy was sold for $16,500!

Another writing prompt was to write a poem about Grosse Ile… MY 1999 LINCOLN JUST TURNED OVER 175175 Thanks to Eric Michael, who works at a Lincoln dealership, my once old looking 1999 Lincoln has a shiny new look, all hub caps in place, motor tuned up, and running like a top. Eric “adopted” my car when he came to a meeting at our house for the Heritage Tree ID and Protection Committee. He takes it to work and their shop works on it. It just turned over 175175 miles on May 23, and I plan to keep driving it until it finally wears out. Eric told me that when my car was on their lot, people passed by the 2016-17 Lincoln models and were admiring my 1999 oldtimer!

Then just recently I backed out of our

driveway, after looking both ways and saw no cars coming. At that moment the mail truck pulled up to our mailbox and since I didn’t spot her, I bumped into her truck. She had nice rubber bumpers but mine got a minor bump that Eric Michaels claims will easily be bumped out and looking as good as new.

HIT THE HISTORIC MUSEUM IF YOU’RE INTERESTED IN HISTORY Open every Thursday afternoon from 10-12 noon and Sundays from 1-4, the Grosse Ile Historic Museum is a wealth of information about families and places on the Island.

When I was there as a volunteer on July 2, two residents came by. One to find the essay Evelyn Lafayette wrote as a senior in 1939 when seniors were required to write about Grosse Ile history. A copy is in our files.

Another family wants to find out who lived in their home before they bought it. A file contains the information that their home was built in 1919 by Myron Vorce whose wife Ethel was a major force as a Suffragette leading up to the right of women to vote in 2020.

Make the museum a destination on a Thursday or a Sunday. There’s always a volunteer to welcome you and help with your research. Another file contains the diary written by Mary Ballard in 1864-8. She lived in the home that the Barry Jensens bought and moved from East to West River Road in 2006. The Jensens are planning to read the journal kept over 150 years ago.

WEDDING RING STILL MISSING FOR 56TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY When Jack and I celebrate our 56th wedding anniversary on July 8, Jack will not be wearing his wedding ring.

It disappeared several years ago and it didn’t show up after a search in and around his dresser where he kept it for years. I heard about a solution in a news item on the TV. This gal had her husband tattoo a wedding ring on his left finger. Jack vetoed the idea!
