Finding their groove
In a game of dueling big innings, Grosse Ile beat Gabriel Richard 7-5 in a non-league game on May 1. The Devils scored seven runs in the fifth inning to take a 7-1 lead and then held off the Pioneers, who scored four runs in the sixth. At the time, the victory was Grosse Ile’s fifth straight after losing its first five game of the season. Read all about Coach Mario Garza’s team on Page 31.

Water bills, sticker shock or a simple necessity? Joe Porcarelli
After growing up on Grosse Ile and becoming a homeowner I watched the water bills rise and rise without any understanding of what drove these rates. It was easy to complain and wonder how and why the sale of water could be so expensive. When I became a Township Trustee there were numerous issues our group would begin to tackle. I personally added one more - the cost of water. My first step was to tour the water treatment plant with trustee Jurecki, Bill Costick and DPS Director Thiel. I was amazed to see first
hand what it took to run this multimillion dollar facility. The next step was to sit down with Director Thiel and go over all the revenues and costs to run the entire water program. What I expected to see was different revenue-generating areas but - lo and behold - it turned out there was only one: The sale of water. That one revenue stream funded all of the following: The sewer treatment plant, personnel, state and federal mandated testing and compliance, purchase of water from the Great Lakes Water Authority, engineering, capital improvements,
maintenance of water mains and repair, equipment and the list goes on. To put the cost of water main replacement/repair in perspective, Grosse Ile Township has 65 miles of water mains and 75 miles of sewer. It costs approximately $4 million dollars to repair/ replace 1.5 miles of pipe. Four million dollars is one year’s worth of revenue that the township brings from the sale of water.
It is now clear to me the cost of running this entire operation is staggering. To give myself a better understanding of the cost of monthly water fees compared to my other utility bills, I broke it down per month comparing gas and electric, family cell bill, cable/internet and I realized for the first time the cost of water, sewer rates and refuse per month was lower than all the others. This definitely changed my view of the entire program. My efforts are not to soften the blow for paying another utility bill, but to educate others in a way that I was never educated on this very
expensive program in running the water side of the dept of public service. I cannot go without stating I have worked with most of the DPS Commission which includes Board Liaison Dave Nadeau, Chairperson William Costick, Vice Chair Phil Kennedy, John Reilly, Les Schmidtke, Lenny Pusdesris and Lara Syrocki, who are tasked with overseeing the operation, planning and budgeting of the entire dept of public service. I applaud them for their effective and efficient manner that they have accomplished in their service . It is clear that their decision-making is in the best interest of Grosse Ile Township and it’s citizens.

“Smiley” Sells! When Lisa LaRowe was a little girl working in a restaurant with her mom, people called her “Smiley.” “I still get that type of reaction today,” she said. “Yesterday, someone said, ‘Oh, you’re Lisa, the one that’s always happy.’ It feels nice to have that kind of response from people I meet.” LaRowe recently became an associate broker with eXp and opened the Grosse Ile branch eXp office on Macomb Street. Lisa and her daughter, who is attending college, are also Grosse Ile residents. “I actively sell real estate, train new agents, and help develop experienced agents by helping them build their business,” LaRowe said. In a way, her life has come full circle since she was attending Henry Ford Community College to become a teacher about 20 years ago. “I had friends that were opening a new brokerage, and I decided to put my college education on hold and give it a try,” she said. “I never looked back! It’s funny that my original calling was to teach, and here I am doing my absolute dream job — selling real estate and teaching others to do the same. I am currently training 15 new agents within our Trenton and Grosse Ile offices.” After many years with other firms, she joined eXp in 2018, and she’s glad she did. “We are a technology company, so we have all the tools we need to stay ahead of the web-based future of real estate,” LaRowe said. “Real estate is a way of life for me. I love what I do and love my clients. It’s addicting. I think my favorite part of being a real estate agent is when I see my clients get so excited about a home they are about to own. I love being a part of helping make their dreams come true.” She is a 2-time cancer survivor and has learned from that experience. “I think others can learn from me to keep going despite life struggles, health issues, family struggles, market conditions,” she said. “Do not give up! Keep your goals in front of you!” To keep that happy outlook, LaRowe has learned to start each day with positive affirmations about herself and the day ahead. “I focus on being very thankful for my life and the people in it,” she said. “It’s imperative to take care of yourself and have fun every day. If you are not happy, it’s difficult to give your clients the best of you.” She serves as a bellringer for the Salvation Army every holiday season, and also enjoys almost anything that brings her outside and into nature. And she has advice for people who want to buy or sell a home. For sellers, she advises having someone professional look around the house for defects that can be easily fixed before an inspection. For buyers, she advises preparation. “Be ready to go,” LaRowe said. “Be preapproved with a trusted lender, have proof of funds, and take the advice of your experienced real estate agent.”

Best Service, Best Rates Jacque Gorris loves being able to help people buy a home for the first time. And he loves being able to help someone struggling financially to leverage their home to ease that burden. Gorris is a senior loan officer with Supreme Lending. He has an office in Trenton and recently opened a satellite office on Grosse Ile, where he also lives. The part of the job he’s not so crazy about is when he has to tell someone no. “When I have to say, ‘Sorry, I can’t help you,’ that’s hard,” he said. “You see the heartbreak of those people sometimes — the first-time home buyer, the newly divorced mom or dad.” A former Marine, he’s direct and up-front if he has to deliver bad news. “I don’t sugar-coat a lot of things,” Gorris said. “I’m just a straight shooter when it comes to business, and I do everything by the book.” He likes working for Supreme, a top mortgage banking company that is privately owned, handles only residential loans and is licensed in 40 states, because he can have a “personal touch” with his clients that a different firm might not allow. “Right now, I’m there from start to finish — from the first hello to sitting at the closing table,” he said. “I’m always available to them seven days a week.” Gorris grew up in Brownstown Township and attended Gibraltar schools, where he played a lot of sports. He started working at the age of 13 at South Winds Golf Course in Southgate, and has worked ever since. In his junior year of high school, he signed up to the join the Marine Corps. “Literally 10 days after high school graduation, I was in the Marines,” he said. Gorris served for eight years. He left the military at the end of his contract after he had recently returned from Iraq and learned that the Corps planned to send him back for another deployment of 13 months. His first son was 7 months old at the time, and he decided it was time to move on to something else. He studied finance at the University of Michigan and never looked back. Today, he’s a single dad of two sons, ages 15 and 10. Gorris coached freshman Junior Devils football for two years until the pandemic pulled the plug on the sport, and hopes to coach again someday. And he wants to help put more people into more homes or help them out financially whenever he possibly can.

CULINARY CAPERS I’ve been on a box-cake baking binge since I baked the Pistachio Cake in last month’s Culinary Capers, following it up with Ronnie Padmos’ dump cake and Melva Bonis’ vintage chocolate chip cookies. Ronnie said her family loved the dump cake, which is made without a mixing EVELYN bowl, requires only CAIRNS four ingredients (pie Grosse Ile Grand filling , whipped cream cheese, butter and a cake mix), and is scrumptious with a scoop of ice cream or whipped cream or without. The Trenton resident said the cake can be made with any kind of pie filling or cake mix, but she likes cherry pie filling the best. A cross between a cake and a cobbler, dump cakes became popular in the 1980s, with the first recipe reportedly appearing in a Duncan Hines holiday recipe brochure. And speaking of Duncan Hines, Melva, who lives on Grosse Ile, said she got her cookie recipe off a box of Duncan Hines cake mix 30 or 40 years ago, when her daughter, Amy, was about eight years old. And now Melva is baking the cookies for her granddaughter, Addison, too. Although Melva says she seldom uses cake mixes, she considers Duncan Hines chocolate chip recipe so outstanding that she no longer bakes any other chocolate chip cookie, not even Toll House. While browsing the internet for other cake-mix recipes I stumbled on an intriguing one I’ve renamed Watergate Dump Cookies, with apologies to author Jill of kitchenfunwithmythreesons.com. The cake mix is dumped into the mixing bowl of an electric mixer and beaten with five other ingredients. The cookies are delicious, and so quick and easy as well. . CHERRY PIE WHIPPED CHEESE DUMP CAKE 2 cans (21-ounces each) cherry pie filling 12-ounce carton whipped cream cheese 15.25-ounce box super moist yellow cake mix 1½ sticks butter, melted Set oven at 350 degrees. Dump the pie filling into a 9x13-inch baking dish, spreading evenly. Using two spoons,
scoop out tablespoons of whipped cream cheese and dab, evenly spaced, over pie filling. With a spatula or knife, lightly swirl the dabs of cream cheese into the pie filling without covering the pie filling completely. Combine the cake mix with the melted butter until crumbly, then sprinkle the crumbs evenly over the pie filling and whipped topping. Bake for 45 to 55 minutes until golden brown, checking the last 5 or 10 minutes to avoid overbaking. Serve with whipped cream or ice cream, if desired. FAVORITE DUNCAN HINES VINTAGE COOKIES 1 egg ½ cup plus 2 tablespoons canola oil ¼ cup light brown sugar, lightly packed 15.25-ounce box Duncan Hines Classic White Cake Mix 1 cup chocolate chips ¾ cup (generous) coarsely chopped walnuts Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Lightly beat egg and add oil, then stir in brown sugar, cake mix, chocolate chips and walnuts. Drop by rounded tablespoons onto parchment-lined baking sheets. Bake 10 to 12 minutes until centers are golden brown and edges are lightly browned. Cool on baking sheets about 1 minute, then remove to a rack to finish cooling. EASIEST WATERGATE DUMP COOKIES 15.25 box yellow cake mix 3.4-ounce box pistachio instant pudding mix ½ cup unsweetened shredded coconut ½ cup chopped pecans 2 large eggs ½ cup canola oil Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper. In the bowl of an electric mixer, beat the cake and pistachio mixes, coconut, pecans, eggs and oil until combined. Scoop out portions of dough onto cookie sheet and bake 10 to 12 minutes until lightly browned. Makes about 24 cookies. DEAR READERS: If you have a favorite box-cake or other kind of mix recipe, please consider sharing it with Culinary Capers readers at Evycairns@ aol.com. HAPPY BAKING!

Happy Hebda day! The annual Hebda Memorail Cup Regatta is alway a big date on the local rowing calendar and this year -- the 55th annual - was held on May 1 in the Trenton Channel between Grosse Ile and and the mainland. Grosse Ile joined Wyandotte, Riverview, Trenton, Carlson, Southgate Anderson, Dearborn Heights Crestwood, Saline and Ann Arbor Huron at the event. Unfortunately for rowers and race watchers alike, dangerous water conditions due to weather forced the cancellation of 14 of the 20 scheduled finals races. Because so few races were completed, not champions were crowned.

Here are three common causes of tense muscles At some point in our lives, each and every one of us has experienced tight or tense muscles. In fact, somewhere in your body at this very moment there’s probably a tense muscle. But what’s the cause? There are a few common culprits that we see in the practice frequently, including: 1. Stress. In today’s world, stress is around every corner. This high rate of exposure can lead to muscles typically in the back, shoulders and neck feeling tense frequently. 2. Dehydration. Feel like you’ve got a thirst you can’t quench? You might be dehydrated. In addition to dehydration, electrolyte deficiency can cause muscle cramps and tightness. 3. Medical conditions. Problems with the thyroid can cause muscle pain, weakness and even spasms. If you’re tired of tense muscles, chiropractic may help. Contact us for an appointment. Which Exercise is Best? With so many exercise options, it can be hard to figure out what type is right for you.
As long as your movement of choice is hitting all four categories below, you’re doing great! Your heart rate and breathing are elevated. Aerobic exercise is an important part of working out as it can help lower blood sugar, reduce inflammation and relax blood vessel walls. You’re using your muscles. Regular strength training should be incorporated into your workouts—but that doesn’t have to mean lifting heavy weights. Squats are a great way to engage your muscles. You make time for stretching. Keeping our muscles and tendons limber leads to increased flexibility as we age, making movement easier. You’re working on your balance. Making balance a part of your exercise routine is ideal for long-term
health as your risk of falls will be diminished. You can work balance exercises into your routine by standing on one leg and lifting the other 10 times. Repeat as needed. Celebrating World Health Day April 7 was World Health Day. This year, the World Health Organization (WHO) is committing to building a fairer, healthier world. Wondering what you can do to build a healthier, happier community and world? Here are a few ideas: • Connect with people in your community. Attend local government meetings and voice your opinion on matters you believe in. • Volunteer at a local hospital (if it’s safe to do so). • Educate yourself. Uncover facts about your own area and developing parts of the world in WHO’s annual statistics report. • Nourish your own body—change begins with you. Teach your family healthy habits that can be shared and passed on. ~ From Cousineau Chiropractic

Restaurant entrepreneur says employees are heart of the businesses Jeremy Syrocki, who is involved in ownership of Truago restaurant in Trenton, Major Biddle in Wyandotte and Lloyd’s on Grosse Ile, has been in the restaurant business virtually his entire life. Syrocki opened Truago about five years ago, he helped open Major Biddle about two years ago, along with his brother Jeff and sister-in-law Christine. And two months ago, he reopened Lloyd’s with Grosse Ile friends Chris Laura and Francis Brooks. From his vast experience, Syricki knows that one of the key things that make a prosperous business is the quality of the employees. And at his three establishments Syrocki has been blessed with great employees, some who have been with him for years. For example, Truagio head prep chef Veronica Manzano predates even Truago and has worked for Syrocki for 10 years. “Our team of employees is what makes our restaurants succeed and a majority of them have been with the company since day one,” Syrocki said. “Our No. 1 goal in the kitchen has and always will be the quality and consistency of our food. The No. 1 goal for the service staff is to make sure every guest that walks through our door has an outstanding experience with us.” Truago general manager Carrie Hancock has been with the Trenton restaurant since 2016. Others that have been there from the start or near the start are, office manager Theresa Crispell, server/bartender Stacie Catka, server Holly Bogard, server Sarah Kowalski, server John Bujdoso, bartender Dawn Bomay and bartender Kristen Johnson. But the loyal staff at Lloyd’s really takes the cake. When the new owners reopened the bar, they brought back all the former employees who wanted to return. The longevity champ is sever Mary Kay Marx, who has worked at Lloyd’s for 31 years. And she is not the only one with a long record at the Grosse Ile tavern. Server Emily Lehman has been there 15 years, server Courtney Lehman has been there for 14 years, Cook Matt Robertson has been there eight years and server Robin Hensley has been there six years. It’s an impressive list of loyalty. Each of the three restaurants is different and offers a unique menu and atmosphere. Truago is an upscale steak and seafood restaurant in Downtown Trenton. Major Biddle, on the north end of Biddle in Wyandotte, specializes in ribs, barbecue and comfort food such as meatloaf and lasagna and also offers sandwiches, steaks and seafood.
The new owners redid the interior, but Lloyd’s remains a comfortable neighborhood bar where you can get house-made pizza, burgers, hoagies and a wide assortment of appetizers, entrees, soups and salads. Already, the bar is selling 50-100 pizzas a day, counting carry-out and dine-in sales, Syrocki said. Combined the three establishments employ around 100 people. Here is each establishment’s leadership team: Truago - Carrie Hancock, general manager and Mario Robertson, executive chef. Major Biddle - Christine Syrocki, general manager and Samantha Esparza, executive chef. Lloyd’s - Johnny Zukowski, executive chef. “The secret to retaining a great staff is hiring great leaders who will jump in and do whatever it takes to keep anyone from failing,” said Jeremy Syrocki. “You build mutual respect as a leader when you work alongside your team. Covid had a way of showing us who was loyal to the company and wanted to remain a part of our restaurant family. “The most important quality that a member of our team must possess is accountability and integrity.” The staff at Truago, Major Biddle and Lloyd’s are experienced, talented and ready to make your return to dining out a pleasant, enjoyable and delicious one. They’d like to invite you to come out and give them a try. LISTENING IN ON THE ISLAND
Jack’s birthday cake is no cause for alarm I had to laugh when I heard on my favorite radio station WRCJ (classical music) that a woman composer was celebrating her 99th birthday when her daughter provided a sheet cake and lit the candles. Unfortunately, it was on a table under the fire alarm which went off and PAMELA A. FRUCCI summoned the local Grosse Ile Grand fire department and ambulance which showed up at the birthday party. For Jack’s 92nd birthday next January, we’ll make sure where we place the cake!
On East River, we enjoy both the waterfront and wildlife Lucky old timers (my husband Jack and me) have a daughter who bought a waterfront house on East River Road with a view of both lake and ocean freighters going right by the front windows. (Our daughter lives in NYC but bought the house as an investment. We’re renting from our daughter.) Besides enjoying the traffic on the Detroit River heading up for and from the Great Lakes, we’re also enjoying nature up close. Our daughter Marti bought me a bird feeder that’s attached to the kitchen window. Now, I can be eyeball-to-beak when the many birds enjoy the seed while I’m washing dishes. Then, in the spring wreath I bought for the front of the house, a bird couple built a nest and hatched baby birds. On the waterfront this early spring, we’ve been seeing tiny fluffy goslings with their Canada geese parents. We see a lot of fishing boats in the river out our front windows, but we didn’t see the trio of scientists who caught the 240 pound 100-year-old sturgeon off the shore of Grosse Ile. After measuring the almost seven foot monster fish, they returned it to the water. Daughter Marti enjoys a week with friends in Hawaii When Marti told us she was flying
to catch up with friends in Hawaii for a week in April, I gave her the phone number of Emily Gail, who lives in Kona. Emily is one of three sets of Gail twins who grew up on the Island. There are Emily and her sister Edith, Julia and Ann, and the older set Max and Mary. Max is best known for his role in the TV show Barney Miller and can still be seen in current shows.
A big thank you to GIHS junior Parker Miklos The Island Clean-up was May 2, organized by the Kiwanis Club, which enlisted volunteers to collect accumulated litter along Grosse Ile roads. I volunteered that day to help weed the northeast bed at Four Corners, so I went out with trash bags on Sat., April 24 and did Horsemill, the road I was assigned to for the Clean-up. It was a wet but not pouring-rain day, so I got damp but not soaked. What made my day was that halfway through my labor, a teenage boy stopped by and asked if he could help. So, a couple of hours later Parker Miklos and I had all the accumulated litter bagged and ready to be hauled away. It turned out that our granddaughter Katie is in the same class as Parker at GIHS and both are on the golf teams. Parker tells me he’s expecting his team to win the state championship this spring, so I hope if he is as good at golf as he is at volunteer-ing, his prediction will come true! Hillsdale commencement speaker is actor Tim Allen My son Jay and his wife Lisa are Hillsdale graduates and we’ve joined the Presidents Club. This means we get invited to a lot of events on campus, including commencement on May 8. The speaker is Tim Allen, not the usual dignitary invited to deliver an address. He is lauded as an actor, comedian, writer, director, and producer. Jack is addicted to his TV show “Last Man Standing.” so we’re anxious to hear what he has to say.

C’mon in and have a look!
Grosse Ile Yacht Club to throw open its doors Grosse Ile Yacht Club - the 86-yearold club located on the Southeastern tip of Grosse Ile - features one of the most scenic spots on the island. It’s the perfect spot to enjoy the waterfront lifestyle. And the good news is, the club wants you to join. Grosse Ile Yacht Club is having a membership drive and the club is throwing open its doors several times this summer with open house galas that will allow nonmembers to come over, check out the facilities, get to know members, check out membership options and have a great time doing it. As part of its “Summer Series,” the club will host a number of open house events, open to the public to come in, look around, ask questions and see if the club with the best view of Lake Erie is right for you. The Summer Series is sponsored by BAM Designs, Milkens. com, Grosse Ile Grand Newspaper, McLaughlin’s Furniture, Boaters Value, B&D Vacuum, Rosenau Powersports, Taylor Chevrolet, Groat Brothers, MBA Realty and the Crysler family. The first open house will be June 18. Drop by and see what the club has to offer. The club will roll out its state-ofthe-art stage and live music from some of Downriver’s most popular bands will fill the air. Listen by the club’s welcoming fire pit or the marina patio or take in the music and the amazing views from the new upper deck Tiki bar. Hang around until after dark and catch the spectacular fireworks display. Whatever you do, you are likely to feel at home. “The club is beautiful,” said Vice Commodore Will Evans, “the views are phenomenal, but it’s the people I am most impressed with. When we first came to Grosse Ile Yacht Club we were greeted with warmth and smiles. It is what drew us to the club.”
Evans said the club has a safe and protected harbor with deep water wells that allow the club to accommodate virtually any size boat. The club offers winter storage facilities, a 10-ton travel lift and two-ton single point lift for haul out and launch of both large and small boats, and pump out facility. Dock your boat here and leave your
patios all around; and the firepit. You can see out into Lake Erie. “It’s just gorgeous, really.” The expansive outdoor patio wraps around three sides of the clubhouse overlooking the Detroit River and Lake Erie. The patio plays host to both dining and cocktail service and serves as the setting for the club’s “Music on
worries behind. But the GIYC is more than a place to just dock your boat. It’s a place to meet and make friends. It’s a great place to eat or spend quality family time. It’s a great place to get easy access to the area’s best resource Lake Erie and the Detroit River. “This is a great location for Lake Erie and the Detroit River boating and sailing,” said Evans. “There is protected anchorage near by, it’s a wonderful place to hang out and it provides access to one of the world’s best fisheries.” The beauty of the GIYC is what drew member Rich Obermayer and his wife to the club seven years ago. Obermayer has lived on Grosse Ile most of his life and has belonged to numerous boat clubs both on and off the island, but he fell in love with the Grosse Ile Yacht Club. “The location is the thing,” he said. “It’s a very beautiful spot. There are
the Patio” series. The club also features a lake-facing “front lawn” with access to the water and a swim raft for those who like to get into the water. The club’s vibe is also attractive, Obermayer said. “The people at the Grosse Ile Yacht Club appreciate the history and ceremonies associated with yachting ... They like the sailing/boating lifestyle. “There is a very positive social atmosphere that we really enjoy,” he said. Another benefit of Yacht Club membership is the extraordinary reciprocal agreements with so many other clubs. The club is affiliated with the Detroit River Yachting Association - DRYA, the Inter-Lake Yachting Association – ILYA, and with Associated Yacht Clubs- AYC, as well as most Grosse Ile area private clubs and offers reciprocal services to members of these affiliated clubs,
including guest dockage and dining and use of our facilities. It is another perk that drew in Obermayer and his family. “We love yacht clubs and when we travel, we love visiting other yacht clubs around the US and Europe,” he said. And GIYC delivers that for its members through memberships in all key boating associations. Obermayer said there have been instances where friends with memberships at other local yacht clubs have not been able to secure reservations at out-of-town clubs and his Grosse Ile Yacht Club membership has been recognized and accepted. Obermayer said he also appreciates the reciprocal agreement with the Grosse Ile Golf & Country Club and West Shore Golf and Country Club. Having that chance to join friends or enjoy a dinner at another fine club is a special privilege, he said. “They make it very easy,” he said. “You make reservations, enjoy the evening and they charge it to your yacht club membership.” Evans, also has a tale about the reach of GIYC membership. Years ago, while vacationing in Hawaii with his wife, Sherry, Evans used his membership to get dinner reservations at a Honolulu yacht club. Not only were he and his wife warmly greeted at the club, but they were invited out to enjoy a night of ocean sailing during the club’s weekly races. “That’s a big benefit of joining the club,” admitted Evans. “Your membership will allow you to visit most any other club around the country or around the world.” In addition to everything else, the Grosse Ile Yacht Club offers a wide variety of member special events throughout the year, including the SEE CLUB Page 15

Informal Lounge An informal lounge serving a wide selection of beverages and offering a relaxed dining atmosphere. Outdoor Patio An expansive outdoor patio overlooking western Lake Erie, which hosts both dining and cocktail service, and serves as the setting for our “Music on the Patio” music series. Full Service Dining Room A full service dining room featuring fine cuisine for all dining occasions. Full Array Of Yacht Services Including winter storage facilities, a 10 ton travel lift and 2 ton single point lift for haul out and launch of both large and small boats, and pump out facilities. Special Events We offer numerous activities almost every month for more fun. Sailing is a main attraction Have you ever wanted to learn to sail? Or are you a sailor trying to quench that competitive thirst? The
GIYC is the place for you. The sailing programs - both youth and adult - are the pride and joy of Grosse Ile Yacht Club. “They are a jewel for the club,” admitted member Obermayer, himself an accomplished sailor. “It’s a wonderful sailing program, especially for the kids. We have a ton of kids and they love it.” The junior sailing program provides learn-to-sail instruction and on-the-water safety to youth aged 8-18. The program also includes a junior sailing racing team to foster competition throughout the Midwest. The junior program is open to both members and non-members alike. For adults, the club has a sailing program headed by noted local yachtsman Brian Hartwell. The club offers sessions of four classes, taught both on the water and onshore, over a one-month period during the summer months. Classes are held once a week on weeknight evenings and focus on basic sailing techniques and on water safety, using the curriculum followed by US Sailing in their learn-tosail classes. Students (members or non-members) get the opportunity to steer, trim sails and learn to safely take their boat away from the dock and return. Multiple sessions may be offered throughout the summer, dependent on interest and class size. Condensed daytime sessions can be arranged upon request. And for those who already know how to sail and want to test themselves, the club has organized Spring, Summer and Fall local Lake Erie racing programs and participates in regional Great Lakes racing events (Mackinac, Put-In-Bay etc.). GIYC memberships are very economical with great benefit. Call Grosse Ile Yacht Club at 734676-0211 and join with, “Great people, Great Lakes, Great times.”

TELESCOPING THE TOWNSHIP
Grosse Ile does plan a big deal for free bridge reopening
In the April edition of the Grosse Ile Grand, I wrote about the gala opening of the county bridge when it converted from handling rail traffic to automobiles. It was in September 1931 and my mother Bernie Marsh was part of a crowd at the celebration. I suggested in my column that we should duplicate the event by inviting Michigan’s governor or lieutenant governor to officiate. Just recently, I got a call from Grosse Ile’s supervisor Jim Budny, who had read my column. He said for the re-opening celebration, PAMELA A. FRUCCI Grosse Ile Township planned to Grosse Ile Grand invite Wayne County Executive and Wayne County workers, who were the ones who will make the bridge safe for us again. We may not have an airplane fly over the bridge and swoop down and cut a ribbon as it did in 1931 but we will have a re-opening ceremony. Look for a future announcement of a waterfront event staged by Grosse Ile Township when we finally get Parkway open all the way to West Jefferson over the restored county bridge. Four volunteers weed Four Corners Thank goodness that sisters who have a love of gardening - even the hard parts - have taken on weeding the northeast corner of Four Corners. Irma Slimko and her sister Lydia Fetterly have spent hours working in the bed, in the past done by the Island Beautification Committee. (Irma is a former member.) Unfortunately, the IBC is down to only three members and maintaining three of the Four Corners has fallen in the hands of Karl Moehr, owner of Moehr Landscaping. (The beautifully planted and maintained bed on the SE corner is the good work of the Grosse Ile Garden Club.) To weed alongside the sisters, Fred Watson and I joined them on Sat., May 1 to remove more of the hundreds of thistles that had invaded the corner.
Fred even opened his wallet and paid for 10 yards of mulch to spread on the bed. Those two hardworking sisters spread the mulch on Mon., May 3.
Group plans to bring back live theater on the island When Fred Watson approached me a few months ago asking why there was no longer live theater on Grosse Ile, I decided to see if there was enough interest in reviving the former Islanders which dissolved in 2007. Founded in 1926 when the Islanders performed their first play: “How to Marry a Dumb Wife,” the Islanders were the second oldest theater group in Michigan. By the way, “dumb” meant deaf and and unable to speak. Since meeting in December, the group, made up of former actors and actresses, the son of a former director and myself, have been getting together at the VFW. Among our decisions was a new name: Islanders II and we’ve planned live entertainment we’re calling “A Showcase of Grosse Ile Talent.” It will be a combination of singers, dancers, recitations and a video of Julie Schultz, whose poem
was published in the Ile Camera when she was in the 8th grade and in middle school. Another video will be of a 105-year-old singer and dancer with Bob Hope entertaining our soldiers in Europe during WWII. A highlight of the performance will be a 10-minute visual history of the Islanders filmed by Fred Watson and narrated by Pam Frucci and Linda Stanko. Fred had the use of a giant file of programs and clippings from the group’s 80-year history, which had been preserved at the Historical Society. Linda and I will M.C. the show and will also publicize the performance by riding in the Islandfest parade down Macomb Street on Sat., June 5. The show will be performed from 2-4 p.m. at the Islandfest at the airport. Here is Julie Schultz’s poem. ACTRESS Lights, camera, action, No time left on the set. What’s the big attraction? I haven’t found out yet. But something deep inside me Goes up when the lights go down--It’s all a part of me, Something special I have found. Portraying other people, Learning every line, Rehearsal’s at eleven, I won’t be home ‘til nine. Will I be an actress? Perhaps with luck I will ‘Cause that excitement deep inside me Just will not be still. Beloved pet Scrappy was a fan of the concerts on the commons When I was shopping recently at Kroger, I was approached by a regular attendee of our Concerts on the Commons. He shared with me that his beloved pet Scrappy, a rescue dog who’d react with a tail wag when his master asked him if he’d like to go to a concert, had passed away. Scrappy was a pre-pandemic regular at the concerts last year when a large crowd would assemble at the Commons at the corner of Meridian and Macomb to hear live music and entertainers. It had been a traditional way to spend a Sunday evening from the end of June to the end of August, listening to a free concert thanks to the Grosse Ile Alliance for the Arts, and a generous donation from the Meyer family and the DDA (Downtown Development Authority.) If we get a “green light” from the governor to again meet in crowds, the GIAA plans to sponsor another season of Concerts on the Commons.

Time to clear up the confusion about Estate Planning ... The following definitions lack legal precision, but makes it easier to get a clear picture of what may be needed in your case. ■ Will – letter of intent of where you want your personal property to go – or not go. ■ Living Will – Documents your wishes during your final days including final healthcare choices and possibly your burial wishes. ■ Trust – This is a “company” that you start, and you become the CEO, “Trustee” and “Settlor.” The company outlives you, but continues to manage your assets as if you were alive by the successor CEO – whom you designate. ■ Power of Attorney – Financial and Healthcare – you need both – the first so someone can pay your bills, the second, sometimes called a Patient Advocate, designates someone to make “hallway at the hospital” decisions to take the stress off the family. ■ Ladybird Deed – probably the best thing that has happened to owning a home. I love these deeds – you grant yourself a life estate – in your own property - but retain the power to sell or borrow against the property. If you do not sell before you pass, this “springs” the house out of your estate, and your heirs have instant ownership, subject to any mortgage or taxes owed or similar. Again, this is just a general description of the more popular terms – no one choice is a “silver bullet” but depending on how your estate gets planned out you can expedite a clean and clear process for the assets you worked a lifetime to save. Why wouldn’t you want to do that? Stop by or call and make an appointment and I’ll tell you what you’re going to need to do this right. To my numerous former clients – thank you for allowing me to draft your estate plan!

STAY AT HOME HEAlTHCARE Stay at Home Care LLC has been helping the elderly and disabled in the privacy of their own homes for 7 years. The business started as a result of both co-owners Brenda Rademan and Diana Cain having Diana Cain & Brenda Rademan difficulty finding the means to care for their own parents at home. “You speak with the owners; we aren’t a franchise like the rest of them.” said co-owners Brenda and Diana. When talking about your loved ones, there is nothing worse than dealing with impersonal care. At Stay at Home Care you can expect the friendly service of hand picked employees, and a care plan that revolves around your needs. In fact they are known for their 2 hour minimum for services. This minimum insures that they can provide you with care that works for your schedule. Stay at Home Care is proud to keep people in the homes they love, as long as possible. GIAA Invites you to paint a peace pole The Grosse Ile Alliance of the Arts invites residents out to St. James Church for 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on June 26 to take part in a Peace Pole Painting project. Peace Pole projects are sponsored by the organization May Peace Prevail on Earth International. The movement was founded in 1955 by the late Masahisa Goi of Japan. In a moment of great inspiration, Masahisa Goi awakened to the need to spread this Message in the hearts of the global community for the attainment of inner and outer peace. A Peace Pole is an internationally-recognized symbol of the hopes and dreams of the entire human family, standing vigil in silent prayer for peace on earth. Each Peace Pole bears the message May Peace Prevail on Earth in different languages on each of its four or six sides. There are estimated over 250,000 Peace Poles in every country in the world dedicated as monuments to peace. Planting a Peace Pole is a way of bringing people together to inspire, awaken and uplift the human consciousness the world over. It is a wonderful project for any community, organization or your home. Peace Poles are now recognized as the most prominent international symbol and monument to peace. They remind us to think, speak and act in the spirit of peace and harmony and stand as a silent visual for peace to prevail on earth. The cost for the Grosse Ile event is $35 for GIAA members and $40 for non-members. The GIAA will provide primed Peace poles, paint and brushes. This is a socially distanced event and masks are required. Space is limited and participants should bring their own lunch. USA made mistakes that must be corrected
I’ve mentioned this before; forgive me for repeating myself. But think about this (again): In 1965, 95 percent of all of the clothes that were bought in the USA were made in the USA. By 2005 (just 40 years later), our 95 percent share had shrunk to 5 percent. The jobs lost over that span were massive. Imagine all the workers displaced, their jobs - in essence - transferred Peter Rose to mainly Asian workforces. Grosse Ile Apparel manufacturers moved their Grand machinery and entire factories at great expense, because they knew how fast the payback was on that expense. Other businesses have suffered the same fate. I don’t know how many Americans lost their jobs due to supposedly free trade, across all industries. Millions of jobs, though. And evidently, there was nothing that could be seen in that complete collapse of an industry that would have made them all stop and think a moment. Americans were damaged by that exodus. America was damaged, because nobody said “Hold on, there.” We just let so many jobs just plain go away. It’s so vile…. “Free Trade” is a term to be used with great restraint. The idea is perhaps intended to be noble, but all sorts of mechanisms are in place to protect the industries that each country feels must not be allowed to founder. We, on the other hand, say something like “Well, if China is cheaper, you’re just going to have to adapt.” “Or fail.” Government bought the mantra of “let the market manage itself” hook line and sinker. Just like they bought trickle down economics, not smart enough to realize that “bubbling up” is infinitely more effective and powerful than trickling down for the bulk of America. A market driven economy has some allure from one point of view, but ultimately, ceding all efforts to manage our financial system has damaged that
system horribly. Businesses that made such calamitous decisions to put Americans out of work so they could make more money should have been made aware that the products they would be importing would cost more due to taxes and tariffs. There easily could have been such a counter move, and what, then, would have been the outcome? Because “leadership” acted as if it had no real choice, capitalism mutated to become this current, distorted version of itself, treating Americans as disposable and expendable. This is the capitalism that has people seeking other paths to follow. Capitalism is a very good thing, when it is managed. But it has not been, nor is it being managed. Bizarrely, many people here believe that China has stolen our jobs. A very inaccurate picture has
have played a leading role. And the pressure against local and independent businesses is inexorable. This is not just a coincidence. We also had companies being as ruthless as possible, ending jobs here in a substantial, cold and calculating way. Where has been the champion? Standing up, defending Americans and their jobs? Defending economies of cities that have lost all the factories and plants that once provided decent jobs for their populace? I can name a few. I can name far too few. Correcting our course is a project of such magnitude that actually seeking to fix it all is daunting, prohibitively expensive. Establishing a factory is not cheap and without government intervention there is little chance of it working anyway. I can’t see it happening, can you? Mind you, I’m only illuminating my industry. So many have been decimated by identical aims and
been painted, creating villains to hate. Now, don’t get me wrong, I believe China is a very real problem on many fronts. They don’t get a pass from me, but the issue I am addressing was created by American capitalism, capitalism that was not controlled at all by those that should have protected America and Americans. As the process unfolded and accelerated, there was no one to intercede. Through administrations of both parties, we watched my industry and many others become a very different industry. Actually, we have watched this nation become a very different nation. As I pointed out last month, monopoly issues
intents of manufacturing corporations across the board. And there has been no effort to change the way it all works; the price companies have to pay if they transferred jobs away. This is a huge topic, one that makes people’s eyes glaze over. Macro economic stuff is hard to get our arms around; easier to just ignore it and do our jobs. When we do that, though, we abdicate our responsibility for our own earth, communities, and indeed, our very lives that are ours to shape, as long as we don’t get hypnotized.

Red Devils are slowly finding their groove 2021 Grosse Ile Red Devils
HANK MINCKIEWICZ
Grosse Ile Grand
Slow starts, slow starts, slow starts; that has been a consistent theme among high school teams throughout the Downriver area this spring. The COVID-19 pandemic delayed the start of spring practice, then spring break took it’s usual toll and, of course, temperamental Michigan weather always chips in with its two cents The Grosse Ile baseball team has not been immune to the effects. The Red Devils dropped their first five games of the season, including a couple by wildly lopsided scores. But the Devils turned that around with a couple of lopsided wins of their own and have been a different team since. Grosse Ile clubbed Flat Rock 19-2 on April 19 and they pounded nonleague Southgate 16-2 five days later and the whole complexion of the season changed. The Red Devils then stifled archrival Riverview 8-1 and, in their most impressive win to date, the Red Devils came back from a 5-1 deficit to beat Monroe St, Mary Catholic Central 7-5. Coach Mario Garza said he thinks his team was suffering from a little too much self-imposed pressure in the early going. While quite a number of the Red Devils have varsity experience, most of the players got that experience Senior Nate Browen scores a run. when they were freshmen and sophomores and not really expected to be team leaders. that game, I still kind of thought we Now that they are juniors and were pressing, but then we got that seniors, they are leaders and that rally started and kept pouring it on and realization took a toll. finished the way we wanted them to,” “I think they were all pressing,” said Garza. Collin Linting and Jack Weise each drove in two runs, but the biggest key was Lowry’s three-innings of shutout pitching in relief of Nate Brown. Grosse Ile has what appears to be a solid pitching staff this season and a solid top half of the batting order, but when asked to name the strength of his team, Garza pointed to its off-field demeanor.
“Team chemistry,” he said. “We don’t have a big team - just 16 guys - but we haven’t had any personality issues. Our dugout is unified and it works together - that makes my job a lot easier.” Also making the job easier is a pitching staff that includes senior Brown and juniors Madrigal and Lowery. Weise, Tyler Quade and Ty Garza also pitch. Up the middle, the Red Devils feature Brown in center and the smooth-fielding duo of Garza at shortstop and Madrigal at second. SEE GROOVE, Page 32w

Continued from page 30 After graduation, Brown is headed to Lawrence Tech, where he will play outfield for the baseball team. Garza and Madrigal have been a keystone combination since their youth baseball days and Garza said the team is lucky to have such an accomplished duo in the middle of the diamond. Lowery plays to Garza’s left as the third baseman, completing a pretty watertight infield defense. When Brown, Lowery, Madrigal or Garza are on the mound, super-sub Collin Linting fits into their positions. “He’s a great kind of player to have, said Garza. “He plays every day, just in a different position.” In the batting order, Garza’s top five are locked in: Brown, Linting, Garza. Madrigal and Weise and the coach said it is a pleasure to pencil in the names before each game. “Nate led off for us as a freshman and he is still most comfortable there,” said the Grosse Ile coach. “He is really, really good. Collin (Linting) is a good No. 2 hitter; Ty (Garza) is off to a crazy hot start with a high average and he is driving in runs; Madrigal is the clean-up hitter and he has a lot of pop in his bat; and Weise, he is not especially fast and he does not hit home runs, but he consistently hits the ball and drives in runs. “We have a lot of other guys who also contribute farther down in the order, but it really helps to be able to have these guys at the top of the lineup every day.” The Red Devils have just over a dozen games left this season, weather permitting, before hedging off into the Michigan High School Athletic Association state tournament. Grosse Ile will start the tournament in a district at Trenton, featuring the host Trojans, Monroe Jefferson, Riverview and Flat Rock.

Red Revival realized
GIHS cheer district champs; COVID cancels march to state finals Bill Stevenson Grosse Ile Grand
The “Red Revival” is a reality. The Grosse Ile High School Competitive Cheer team is back, and back with a vengeance. For the first time since 2014, the Red Devil squad captured the district championship en route to qualifying for the state finals. But, like much of the maddening scene and heartbreak involving in-person education and interscholastic sports, the path to further athletic greatness was cut short by a COVID-19 quarantine. At the MHSAA Division III, District 14 competition held March 19 at Monroe Jefferson High School, the Grosse Ile Competitive Cheer demonstrated their tenacity and resilience in a come-from-behind victory, besting a field of 12 teams from southeastern Michigan. The top four teams would advance to the regional competition in Novi. Down by 5.5 points going into the most challenging third round, the Red Devils roared back and found the crown with a final score of 745.34, over second place Monroe Jefferson with 744.20 points. Flat Rock was third with 742.32 points and Onsted rounded out the qualifiers with 731.82. Grosse Ile Head Coach Angela Raithel relayed the long journey taken
by the district champs. “First, our seniors were a crucial part of this program’s growth and success. When I took over as coach, we went through a huge rebuilding process. Four seasons prior, when the now seniors were in 8th grade, we had only six girls on the team. Then, when they were in 9th grade we had 12 and we kept building from there. Because of their dedication, persistence, work ethic, drive, passion for the team, program success, and the sport itself they helped rebuild our program to be top in the state once again. “In fact, our whole season’s theme was “Red Revival” focusing on bringing back the great winning tradition Grosse Ile has always had. “The seniors were integral with helping to grow this young team’s skill level, and we have to give credit to our assistant coaches, Isabella Rista, Olivia Koklanaris, Brittany Walton, and middle school coach, Emily Lehmann-Teen. In the on-again, off-again start-up of team sports this year, following MHSAA “Return to Play” guidelines for indoor sports, it’s amazing the cheer team was able to put all the pieces of the puzzle together, let alone do so in championship fashion. SEE CHEER, Page 35
CHEER
Continued from page 30 Raithel explained, “We started the season off having to do Zoom practices to keep in shape and learn the three cheers to perform. Because of our senior leadership, the underclassmen respected and trusted the work we were doing. Having all of the buy-in even when we weren’t physically together was everything. “When we were finally allowed to practice together, we only had three days to put our three rounds of cheers all together. In a normal season you spend the first five weeks of practice getting those cheers learned. This involves all of the choreography along with tumbling and stunting. “This group of senior athletes made it their mission since missing [the state finals] as freshmen to rebuild the name and have a “red revival.” If you listen to the words they say during their cheers, you can hear the story of what they were working for. “Here are a few of their favorite lines: Our idols, became our rivals; Rebuild the name; Been there once let’s do it, do it again; Out work - out last - out hustle push past; State finals, yell! Bring back tradition!” Raithel continued, “This team had the most winning season in recent years. We moved up two spots in the Huron league from last year to second, placed first at the Grosse Ile and Flat Rock Invites, and second at Stoney Creek. We were the first team to bring home a district championship since 2014 and the first team to advance to regionals since 2016. Our scores were in the top 10 of the state all season.” And then COVID-19 hit. The protocol for positive cases set forth by the MHSAA and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services mandates that “Close contacts may have to quarantine for 14 days. “Close contact” is defined as someone who was within six fee of an infected person for a cumulative total of 15 minutes or more over a 24-hour period, starting from two days before illness onset. “It is the school’s responsibility to notify all schools, families, and officials without identifying the person involved,” Raithel said In one quick instance, a magical, almost miraculous season was over. But, the Red Revival is Reality.

Grosse Ile boys and girls get track season underway An early season Huron League quad met between Grosse Ile, Monroe Jefferson, Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central and Milan proved at least one thing -- Jefferson has a dynamic squad, both boys and girls. The Jefferson boys and girls each went 3-0 at the meet and neither team was really challenged. In the boys meet, Jefferson was 3-0, Milan was 2-1, Grosse Ile was 1-2 and SMCC was 0-3. Among the girls, Jefferson was 3-0, Grosse Ile was 2-1, Milan was 1-2 and SMCC was 0-3. The most competitive match-up of the afternoon was the Grosse Ile girls against Milan. The Red Devils won that head-to-head battle 66-62. The girls also beat SMCC. The Grosse Ile boys lone win also came against St. Mary. Individually, Grosse Ile got some great efforts. Will Davis won the 100 meters and the long jump and ran with Joey Pizzo, Tyler Swick and Robert Standen on the winning 4x100 relay team. Pizzo was third in the 100, Swick was third in the 400 and the high jump and fourth in the 200 and Jake Reno was third in both the shot put and discus. Among the girls, Andi Fulmer won the 800 meters and the mile, Natalie Christnagel won the high jump,
Skye Livingston was second in the 100, Anna Malonson was second in the two-mile and Katie Keim was third, the 4x800 relay team of Malonson, Alyssa Ice, Michelle Roque and Fulmer was second, Samantha Justusson was third in the shot put and Margaret Justusson and Haley Woods tied for fourth, Samantha Justusson was third on

Scientists take big prehistoric fish from Grosse Ile waters It was talk of the spring when scientists caught a monster sturgeon in the waters off Grosse Ile recently. The big female fish weighed 240 pounds and wass 6-feet, 10-inches long. The fish was examined, processed and released back into the river. Scientists estimate the fish was at least 100 years old. For scale, this photo shows one of the crew, Jennifer Johnson, who is 5-foot-6, lying next to the enormous fish. This is one of the largest sturgeon caught in the Great Lakes. According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the record sturgeon is 310 pounds, The fish was caught using a frozen round goby as bait and biologists termed it “a rare and remarkable catch.” According to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, Lake sturgeon generally grow to weights of up to 200 pounds and lengths of seven feet, with females being longer and heavier than males. Their typical lifespan is 55 years for males and 70 to 100 years for females. Lake sturgeon are listed as a threatened species in Michigan.
Commercial fishing of lake sturgeon is currently prohibited in Michigan and sport fishing is closely regulated. There are many specific regulations for recreational fishing for lake sturgeon in Michigan. Efforts are currently underway in the Great Lakes Basin to restore sturgeon populations and reclaim the historic connection between this fish and people. Since the early-2000s federal, state and tribal agencies have partnered in rehabilitating lake sturgeon through the use of streamside rearing facilities. In these facilities sturgeon eggs and larvae are reared in the waters which they will be released with hopes the fish will imprint and home back to their natal waters. In each facility sturgeon are reared to a size where they are likely to survive and be less vulnerable to predators. Each year thousands of sturgeon are released during public ceremonies and gatherings. Anglers who harvest a lake sturgeon must register their catch within 24 hours. Lake sturgeon harvest is limited to one per year per angler.

Congresswoman Dingell visits Wildlife Refuge
Congresswoman Debbie Dingell visited the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge recently to showcase the Refuge’s world class fishing pier, which extends 700 feet into the Trenton Channel, allowing Michiganders to fish in deeper water without a boat. Dingell joined Susan White, Fish and Wildlife Service Refuge Manager, and Jim Francis, Michigan’s Department of Natural Resources Lake Erie Basin Coordinator, to walk the pier during the spring walleye run and discuss the importance of the pier with community members. “This morning at the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge, we enjoyed the serenity of the sunrise along with a bit of competitiveness. I joined my friends Susan and Jim in the midst of the walleye run, though the fish got me and I just ended up with a missing hook and bait,” Dingell. “From world class fishing opportunities to 6,000 acres of unique coastal lands, the Refuge has something for everyone. I’m thankful that our communities can enjoy its beauty and activities for generations to come.”
