INSPECTION OF THE WAYNE COUNTY BRIDGE CONTINUES
A
s many of our readers are already aware, you may wish to allow yourself some extra time when leaving the island. At the time this article was written the Wayne County Bridge has been reduced to one lane. On Tuesday, August 1 at about 11:00 am the bridge’s westbound lane was closed to all motorist traffic. By: Cameron Colwell The one lane closure is occurring so that workers may continue assessing structural integrity of the bridge. Both east and westbound traffic are able to cross the bridge in alternating fashion. The flow of traffic is being instructed by traffic lights, that were quickly placed the weekend before the one lane closure. The bridge is still open to all forms of water traffic. Many island residents were
concerned after the Wayne County Bridge, also known as the “Free Bridge”, saw a week of scheduled closures in the middle of June. The reasons behind this series of closures was for Wayne County to inspect structural concerns that had been noted. What the June inspection did
identify was the need for three of the supporting piers to be repaired. The three piers were reported to be partially deteriorated. Kaye Byrd, the Director of Communications for Wayne County

Developing Macomb Street By Cameron Colwell The Grosse Ile Township Downtown Development Authority was created to grow, strengthen and promote the economic vitality of our downtown business district on Macomb Street. Taking strides towards this goal, the DDA has officially started their own grant program. The New Development and Improvement Grant will provide funding to new business owners moving to the DDA District or existing businesses that expand or improve their current presence within the district. The maximum that will be awarded to any one Grant Recipient is $5,000. The Grant process is currently open for the 2017–2018 Fiscal Year. Grant application will be accepted, reviewed and awarded on an ongoing basis depending on timing
