Red Devils Back In Action Grosse Ile has had a tough start to the 2017 football season. They have started 0-2 for the first time since the 2015 season. On Aug. 25, Grosse Ile fell to Almont High School 34-6 in the Xenith Prep Kickoff Classic at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. It was both of the team’s first game By Alex Melhorn this year. Almont is ranked very high and is expected to do very well this year. Almont’s state rank is 89 and Grosse Ile’s state rank is 285 so Almont was the heavy favorite. Almont also had 13 seniors on their team so they were very experienced and have played with each other for a long time now. Longtime Head Coach John Bodner has a very young team this year with a lot to learn but a ton of potential. It was an honor for Grosse Ile to be invited to play at the Xenith Prep Kickoff Classic but the team had a

rough outing. The team only scored 6 points which are the fewest they have scored in a game since the 2014 season. Xenith is a company that sells football gear across Michigan and the team was very excited to play in the classic. “It was a very cool experience

to play at Wayne State and to play in front of such a big crowd. It will definitely be a good memory,” stated junior wide receiver Luke Harwood. Harwood earned the Legacy Football MI Most Outstanding Player Award, which is given to one player

“Where do you want to go for dinner?” is a challenging question in many households but rarely is it a matter of life and death. For Joe Turek of Grosse Ile, that was exactly what it was. On July 20, he and Jeanette Kozel were debating where to go and decided on Smokey’s On the Water. While there, Joe became unresponsive and luckily for him, waitress Mariah Whitelock of Riverview was there. She is attending Oakland University Nursing School and had just finished her first clinical rotation where she became CPR certified. She quickly assessed his needs and with the assistance of Lindsey Loniecki , they continued CPR until GIFD arrived to take over Kimberly Gronda, manager was also there at

225 WSU CYCLISTS MAKE GROSSE ILE THEIR DESTINATION On Saturday, Aug. 19 if you were out on Parkway or Meridian Roads, you might have seen the 225 cyclists raising money for scholarships for deserving students attending Wayne State University. For the third year in a row hearty men and women rode their bikes either 20 miles round trip to Belle Isle, 62 miles to Lincoln Park, or 100 miles to Grosse Ile. Right in the midst of the cyclists was WSU president M. Roy Wilson who initiated the event based on a similar event back at the U. of Colorado in Boulder which also raised money for scholarships. Early birds paid $50 to register. From June 23 to July 18 the fee went up to $60, and then from July 19 to midnight Aug. 15 cyclists paid $70. In 2017 the total amount raised was $10,000. Once cyclists reached Grosse Ile, they were met at the Commons at the corner of Meridian and Macomb Street with volunteers who gave the riders snax, Gatorade, and band aids, if needed, before returning to WSU campus. The name of the race is

Baroudeur, a French word meaning “warrior” that happens to be the symbol of Wayne State University. In bicyclists’ terms it means “not afraid to break away from...” The total number of cyclists who either did the short, medium, or long run totaled 865. To ride Downriver, the cyclists traveled mostly on Fort Street, then cut over to West Jefferson, pedaled through Elizabeth Park, and then over the county bridge to the Commons. For safety sake, both police from WSU and Detroit provided an escort.

TELESCOPING THE TOWNSHIP

Those of us who support the Grosse Ile animal shelter and the efforts of T.A.I.L.S., which raises money to provide health care to animals at the shelter were happy to hear that everything is “back on an even keel.” According to Police Chief Joe Porcarelli, a part time manager of the animal shelter has been hired in July which frees former manager and animal control officer Julie Cortis to devote By Pamela A. Frucci full time to helping Island residents with any problems with wildlife or their own pets. The new manager Amy Crum retired from managing the animal shelter in Woodhaven but accepted the offer to work part time on Grosse Ile. The T.A.I.L.S. board works well with the new manager and have revised their mission statement to include helping other shelters struggling to pay for items such as dog food. T.A.I.L.S. has a bank account that covers their own expenses with enough of a surplus that they can come to the aid of other shelters which sometimes don’t have enough resources to cover the cost of feeding the animals under their care. Chief Porcarelli is happy to report that hiring the new shelter manager and covering the cost of the animal control officer required no increase in his budget. OUR VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT OFFERED HELP TO NY AFTER 9/11 According to Fire Chief Duncan Murdock, our volunteer fire department didn’t directly take part in the aftermath of 9/11 but did send a donation to the NYC Fire Department to defray their high cost of handling the devastation caused by the two planes which took down the Twin Towers. Our fire department also sent equipment no longer needed to a fire department outside of NYC which had need of such equipment. Chief Murdock said that across the country fire and police departments “take care of each other…we’re like family.” In 2018 it will be 75 years since the Grosse Ile Volunteer Fire Department was organized and bought their first fire truck. Tom Payette, who grew up on the Island and whose brother

Front of Police & Fire Department after the attack on September 11. While Grosse Ile didn’t aid in the direct aftermath of the attack in New York City, they did send aid to a fire department just outside of NYC. Pete has been with the fire department for 50 years, approached Creative Writing Club chair Pam Frucci and asked if she would help put together a commemorative booklet celebrating their 75 years serving Grosse Ile. He’ll fund the publication of the book. The Creative Writing Club has volunteered to work on the booklet and Chief Murdock is checking with his board to see how they can collaborate on this effort to honor the men and women who serve as volunteers of the township fire department. ISLAND BEAUTIFICATION COMMITTEE SEEKING NEW MEMBERS If you like the work of the Island Beautification Committee in planting and maintaining the NE, SW, and NW corners of Four Corners as well as the planting around the Grosse Ile signs at both the south and north ends of the Island, they’re seeking new members. The organization founded in 1975 meets the first Wednesday of the month at the Township Hall at 7 p.m. and is headed by Middle School teacher Brian Medved. This active group hosted a very successful quarterly meeting of the Beautification Council of SE Michigan at the Ford Yacht Club June 15 where IBC member Colleen Gimpel and his husband Chris handmade 16 decorative lighthouses which were

auctioned off to attendees. Another member Irma Slimko painted a watercolor of the lighthouse which was also won in an auction. The theme of the program was Historic Preservation. Residents interested in joining the IBC should get an application form at the township hall open everyday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. ISLAND BEAUTIFICATION COMMITTEE TO HAND OUT IBC AWARDS TO BUSINESSES In a new program of recognizing businesses on Macomb Street for keeping their premises weed and litter free and planting flowers, the Island Beautification Committee awarded about 30 businesses with a decorative decal to place in their window with the words: “This business is helping to keep Macomb Street Blooming and Beautiful.” This award program was initiated in 2016 and will be continued in 2017. However there will be a single judge deciding which businesses have earned the decal. IBC founder Pam Frucci will walk the street and check to see that those which already have a decal in their window have continued to keep their business looking good. She will award decals to those who didn’t earn the decal last year if their place of business qualifies as one which is keeping Macomb Street blooming and beautiful. The judging will be before

PAIRADOCs TRIO ENDS CONCERTS ON THE COMMONS SEASON A well-attended season of Concerts on the Commons, sponsored by the Grosse Ile Alliance for the Arts, ended Aug. 27 with the Pairadocs Trio, a group under Island resident Mike Mullen which plays songs of the 60s and folk songs as well as original songs written by guitar-playing doctor Jeff London. Among the group’s repertoire is a Jeff London song “The Colors of Michigan,” played by the group when they appeared the first time under the gazebo at the Commons. Immediately after hearing the song, concert organizer Pam Frucci thought it would make the perfect choice for the official song of Michigan. To get it better known, Mrs. Frucci had the Pairadocs Trio perform the song for the board of Keep Michigan Beautiful when they met on Belle Isle a couple of years ago. Then in August, she contacted state rep Democrat Darrin Camilleri who showed up on Aug. 27 and videotaped the song to take back to Lansing. Darrin plans to line up a Republican and thought the two of them might succeed in convincing their fellow representatives to adopt “The Colors of Michigan” as the state song. There presently are a couple of songs like “Michigan, My Michigan” which are considered as the state song but none of them are officially designated. Hopefully, Rep. Camilleri will be successful in carrying out his plan and some day these local musicians may be recognized as the group which introduced “The Colors of Michigan” as the state song. Attendees at the concerts were handed slips of paper to fill out checking the concert performers they definitely want to be asked back in 2018. While at the mic announcing the survey, Pam Frucci recognized a concert going dog named Scrappy, a cute little pooch who’s at every concert. His owner says he only has to ask the question “Want to go to the concert?” and Scrappy gets excited and jumps around in anticipation.

FROM THE SUPERVISOR

Fall is here!

I am writing this on Tuesday morning, the day after Labor Day. At this point, you either have kids in school or have seen the school busses everywhere this morning. Obviously, when you have a congregation of younger students waiting at a bus stop, safety may not be on their busy minds, so expect them to act unpredictably and approach with appropriate caution. We By Brian Loftus all know the rules about school busses and the requirement to STOP when their red lights are flashing, but this doesn’t mean the race begins when those lights go off. Please don’t set the new standard for questionable driving (a carefully chosen term) by broadsiding a bus making a left turn - humorous only because no one was injured (I watched this happen many years ago). You should have received your new issue of Channels – the Recreation Department’s Fall/Winter newsletter. Ann and I looked through our copy and I was really impressed – so much to do! Kim and Annette have been very busy finding activities to keep you fit and entertained all winter so I don’t want to hear any complaining about being bored on our little Island. While on the subject of island activities, Michigan’s best and most energetic Downtown Development director has planned a homecoming for everyone in the Township, not just the High School students. “Paint the Town Red” will be a weekend long festival right on Macomb Street, beginning with the Homecoming Parade on Friday through the “Tour de Ile” bike race on Sunday. This and other activities can also be found on the ‘EVENTS’ button on the Grosse Ile app, which most of you now have on your smart phones. Check it regularly as Angela never seems to rest. I have no new information about the Wayne County Bridge. What I mean by this is what your local experts tell you or you read on Facebook is pure rumor (some rumors better than others). In my last communication with Mr. Evans’ staff

Another development that will affect us is the status of the derelict McLouth/DSC site in Trenton.

we (Township Manager Dale Reaume and myself) were told to expect to be briefed on the results of the inspection sometime late in September. At that time we should be able to report on the plan going forward and how we will be impacted. At a minimum, we can expect some closures of the bridge to effect repairs, hence the emphasis on island activities. Another development that will affect us is the status of the derelict McLouth/DSC site in Trenton. The eventual ownership of and responsibility for that property will be determined through a very convoluted process, but Mr. Reaume and I are in constant communication with officials in both Trenton and Riverview. Should any decisions be reached I will make them available as soon as I am informed. As in the bridge situation, plenty of rumors out there. A personal anecdote – a few weekends ago, Selfridge Air National Guard Base held its 100th anniversary – Selfridge Field opened in 1917, renamed Selfridge Air Force Base in 1947 and was divested to the Michigan Air National Guard in 1970. With the transition to the Guard, the base became busier than ever, with all branches of the Armed Forces and several other Federal agencies calling Selfridge home. For me, it was a great reunion with the men and women I served with from 1981 until my retirement in 2003. Many of my 107th Fighter Squadron buddies were there, and it was wonderful to have a squadron reunion that did not involve a funeral. It was also wonderful to see F-16s again, especially when flown by the Thunderbirds! So – until October or when news breaks – Thanks for reading! Best wishes to all, Brian Loftus Supervisor

Remember when everyone was going bananas over zucchini? Well, that delicious, nutritious versatile veggie is really popular again and now at its peak for use in breads, cakes, cookies, casseroles, pancakes and more. Not only is zucchini an excellence source of vitamins A and C, potassium, folates By Evelyn Cairns and fiber, it’s low in calories, with a medium-sized squash containing only about 30, according to the USDA. When shopping for zucchini, chose those that are small- to medium-sized (6 to 8 inches in length and 2 inches or less in diameter). Avoid squash with wrinkled skins and refrigerate in a plastic bag 2 or 3 days. Because I love zucchini, I’ve been visiting my recipe archives and enjoying some of the more than 100 gleaned from readers, the USDA and other sources. One of my favorites is for Tropical Zucchini Cake, which received a thumbs up from neighbors and friends who stopped by recently for samples. It’s awesome with the frosting, but can be sprinkled with powdered sugar instead just before serving.

TROPICAL FROSTING ¼ cup butter 1-pound-box confectioners’ sugar 2 to 3 tablespoons reserved pineapple juice 1 teaspoon vanilla 2 teaspoons coarsely grated orange peel ¾ cup flaked coconut Beat butter, then gradually beat in sugar and juice until frosting is smooth and fluffy. Blend in vanilla, orange peel and coconut. Frost the cake when cool.

THUMBS-UP TROPICAL ZUCCHINI CAKE 2 cups all-purpose flour 2 teaspoons baking powder 1 teaspoon baking soda ½ teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon cinnamon ½ teaspoon nutmeg ½ teaspoon allspice 4 eggs 1 ½ cups sugar 1 cup cooking oil 2 cups grated zucchini 8-ounce can crushed pineapple, drained (reserve juice) 1 cup chopped walnuts ½ cup flaked coconut Sift together dry ingredients, except sugar; set aside. Beat eggs lightly and gradually add sugar. Stir in oil and beat until creamy. Add dry ingredients, zucchini and pineapple. Mix well. Stir in walnuts and coconut, then spread in a greased and floured 13x9-inch pan and bake at 350 degrees 40 to 45 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.

DILLY ZUCCHINI 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 clove garlic 1 small onion 3 small zucchini, sliced 1 teaspoon dill weed or dill seeds Salt and pepper to taste ½ cup sour cream Heat olive oil and sauté garlic and onion until transparent. Add zucchini and dill and cook until zucchini is tender. Add salt and pepper. Don’t add the sour cream until zucchini cools slightly to avoid curdling.

ZUCCHINI DROP COOKIES 1 cup grated zucchini 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 cup sugar ½ cup softened butter 1 egg, beaten 2 cups flour 1 teaspoon cinnamon ½ teaspoon cloves ½ teaspoon salt 1 cup chopped nuts 1 cup golden raisins Mix together zucchini, soda, sugar, butter and egg. Combine flour, cinnamon, cloves and salt and sift into first mixture. Stir to blend, then stir in nuts and raisins. Drop batter by teaspoonfuls onto greased cookie sheet. Bake 12 to 15 minutes at 375 degrees or until a toothpick tests clean.

VOICE OF DEMOCRACY AND PATRIOT’ PEN This is an open letter to all Grosse Ile High School and Middle Schools students. Each year the Veteran’s of Foreign Wars (VFW) sponsor two national essay writing contests. This allows you, in your own words to express your views on patriotism. These are two By David L. Dyer separate programs, one for the High School and the other for the Middle School students. The High School project is “The Voice of Democracy.” This is the VFW’s premier scholarship program. Nearly 40,000 students compete annually for the ultimate award of a $30,000 scholarship. There are four levels of competition with the first being our own Grosse Ile Post 7310. From there winners advance to the District level then on to the State and finally to Washington, DC for the National finals and the ultimate $30,000 scholarship. There are monetary and other awards presented at each level. “So how do I enter, you may ask.” You must write an essay in your own words on this year’s patriotic theme “American History: Our Hope for the Future.” You must then record it on an audio disc or a flash drive. The duration of your essay must be at least three minutes and not more than five minutes with a five second allowance at either end. American History Teacher, Mrs Tina Bertoni, will be heading this program at the High School. All

essays are due in to our VFW Post 7310 on Macomb Street not later than October 31st. I will be collecting them from Mrs Bertoni on that date. The other program is “The Patriot’s Pen.” This is a challenge to all 6th thru 8th graders. The same rules apply as for the levels of competition and the due date. The differences are the topic of your essay will be “America’s Gift to my Generation.” The length must not be less than 300 nor more than 400 words. Your essay will not be recorded. English Teacher, Mrs Susan Dusute continues to head this program as she has for several years. The grand prize in lieu of a scholarship is a $5,000.00 cash award. Again there are monetary and other awards at each of the four levels of competition. Two years ago, Jessica Schutt, now a Sophomore at the High School won first place at the District Level. That was first place over 1,300 entries. Jessica went on to the State finals where she finished fourth. You can all be proud to say that Jessica was from your school. Her first place trophy is on display at the Middle School. One last thing as I close: All of you that participate in either program will receive a certificate which will be well worth framing from the VFW. Good luck and good writing to you all. David L. Dyer Chairman, Voice of Democracy and Patriot’s Pen.

GICC 82nd Annual Men’s Invitational

During the week of August 2nd – 6th, Grosse Ile Golf and Country Club hosted the 81st Annual Men’s Invitational. This continues to hold the record of the longest running invitational in the Midwest! The field of 120 two-person teams enjoyed a week long tournament of great competition. The golf course challenged all of the players, the weather was perfect and it made for an extremely memorable tournament. There were 15 complete flights, with the “Championship” flight being the most exciting of them all. On the final day of the tournament, we had a great back and forth match between two teams. Martenson and Sich were two up with four holes to play but Laske and Everingham came charging back to win three of the last four holes. Laske and Everingham finished the 18th hole 1 up to take the Championship Title and the brand new Corky Cup! It was an amazing event for all participants, family, and members of the Club. We look forward to doing it all again next year for the 82nd Annual Men’s Invitational!

BREAK THE SILENCE STOP THE VIOLENCE!

The Wayne 12th CDRC is inviting anyone wanting to get educated on stopping domestic violence to attend a free Oct. 11th presentation at the Westfield Activities Center, 2700 Westfield Road in Trenton. Those who come to the event will hear Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard discuss the law enforcement aspects of the issue, and Michigan Sen. Tonya Schuitmaker (R-26th District) will talk on the legislative aspect. The facility will open the doors to its 120-people seating at 5:30 p.m., with the event starting at 6 p.m. The event coordinator for the Wayne 12th CDRC, Jason Mueller, said that the Wayne 12th CDRC is hoping to attract “basically women who want to learn about domestic violence,” and to assist them in setting goals for dealing with the issue. Mueller added that an organization in Pontiac

had volunteered to provide literature on domestic violence (educating readers on how to recognize the signs of domestic abuse, and providing contact information on getting assistance in dealing with it), and there might be other guest speakers from the court system to speak to the issue as well. “It’s pretty much that if people need help on domestic violence, there will be no pressure, just a chance to get educated,” he said. “It’s completely free, so hopefully many will get educated that night.” To reach the Westfield Activities Center, cross the Trenton Channel over the Grosse Ile Parkway bridge, turn at Jefferson Avenue and head north to West Road. Turn at West Road and head west past Trenton High School. At the Frank and Poet Drain, there is a traffic light at the West Road and Westfield Street intersection (Kennedy Park with the Kennedy

Recreation and Aquatic Centers should be on your left, and Trenton Veterans Memorial Library should be on your right), so turn right and the Westfield Activities Center parking lot will be on your left just behind the library. The Wayne 12th CDRC will be providing free pizza and pop as well at the event. Though there is no cost for the event, an RSVP is required to attend. To make the RSVP, or to get more information on the event, people can phone (734) 258-7220, email migop12thdistrictrepublicans@gmail.com, or go to the Facebook page https://www.facebook. com/12cdrc. All of the expense in putting on the event is being paid for by the Wayne 12th Congressional District Republican Committee.

Monday, September 18-22 Water Main Flushing, from 8:30am - 4:00pm, For the duration of the program, residents may experience rusty or discolored water. In most cases, the condition is temporary with water quality returning to normal as flushing is completed in the area. Residents experiencing this condition can let the COLD water run in their laundry tub until it clears. Although the discolored water is not harmful to drink, it can stain light colored clothes washed in it. For this reason, consumers should avoid washing clothes from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. until the flushing program is complete. The program is necessary to ensure the delivery of high quality water to residents and to check the proper fire hydrant operation. The Grosse Ile DPS apologizes for any inconvenience to its residents.

Local Beekeeper Takes First Place

Stephanie Kearney, from Grosse Ile, has been a beekeeper for over 5 years. She is a member of the Monroe Beekeepers Club. This past year Stephanie placed 5 hives at Westcroft Gardens on Grosse Ile. After harvesting the honey she decided to enter in the Monroe County Fair for her very first time. With over 20 entries, the judges all agreed that Stephanie Kearney’s honey was #1. It has a light flowery flavor with a hint of peach. Her “Island Girls”, which is the name she chose for her bees, went within their 5 mile radius and brought the pollen back to produce this fine honey. Being a nurse, Stephanie has always looked for ways to eat healthier. She has gone through the efforts of raising chickens and bees. Stephanie even developed a true organic garden in her yard. When looking at where she wanted to raise her bees, Stephanie noted Westcroft

Gardens and all of the beautiful flowers, trees, and bushes they sell. In addition, Garden of Hope is a garden of chemical free vegetables on the premises as well. Stephanie knew that it was the place she would like to add to her bee farming. Honey is available at Westcroft Gardens.

FROM THE GABLES

SHEPHERDS ALL Calamity is always imminent. But so too I think, is hope. As I write these words I’m pondering both of those elements, feeling as I do the recent loss of three friends. The effect of their going has made me think about many things. One of those thoughts has to do with the cruelly strange way in which our daily By Mark McPherson lives are fraught with peril. You daren’t turn on the news at the risk of finding word of some junior villain a world away who threatens to pull the nuclear trigger any moment. Then of course there is the national political scene, fullto-brimming with bans, embargos, farragoes and a course of unbelievable executive actions as make for anything but a “quiet news day.” And if that’s not enough, what about the prospect of a sudden and apocalyptic-seeming environmental “natural” calamity, such as Hurricane Harvey? And then there are the sorts of perils which embrace our daily personal lives. Worst of all may be the loss of a loved one or a friend, or someone or something you respect. Case in point: in very recent days I was apprised of the passing of those three friends. The first was a pal of mine who was funny, brilliant, analytical, prejudicial, and in love with the not-so-simple art of conversation. I was honored by his attentions and kind words, and finding out rather after-the-fact that he had left us was wrenching. It inevitably made me remember the poet John Donne’s words to the effect that “no man is an island” (on Grosse Ile or elsewhere), and how any other individual’s death tends to diminish us all. The second friend’s passing also leaves a gap in the local fabric. Her kindly eccentric, wryly dour, curmudgeonly and cynically-perverse manner were her hallmarks. Moreover, I believe those traits accompanied her from her work as a wife, mother, and dedicated nurse to the gates of Eternity. Third on my sad list is the loss of a new sort of friend, but not of the human kind. This was “Tess the Turkey,” who became a Facebook

celeb in recent months. And why? Well simply because this rare bird and mother of several nestlings managed to survive on those long grassy islands which flank Fort street and the junction of Van Horn. This avian exile gathered quite a following over the months, and a few of us were known to pull over, if only to try and shepherd Tessie out of the way of oncoming traffic. This we did at her peril and I suppose, our own, going against the flow of green-lit vehicles and not a few who were going over the limit, despite the presence of a single, gangly turkey stalking from one side of the road to the other. The car that hit and killed Tessie was, according to some, moving at deliberate speed to achieve its target. That it did so, possibly deliberately, makes me more than sad. For it meant that no longer would I look for that gobbler, hoping to see her snug in the shade of a tree, hovering near her nest of chicks, or moving toward the corn I randomly placed on her island-like base, several times. It pains me not to see my old acquaintance whenever I stop at the Fort/Van Horn light. Mentally I still think of her there, or even, of that astounding picture someone took of Tessie perched on a high wire above the busy roadway. Harking back now, I find myself preferring to believe that maybe Tess was merely practicing for an even higher-wired flight, to a place where old friends and even turkeys reside. As Shakespeare said, wouldn’t that be a “consummation devoutly to be wished?” And with the departures of those “three friends” I’ve described, I’m presently made to think so, if not to wishfully consign each of them to Heaven. Yes, I said Heaven. A kinder, more peaceful and safer place where men, women, children and beasts nicely coincide. Do you think this a frivolous notion? Maybe it is. But didn’t Jesus instruct his apostle Peter to “feed my sheep?” And you know, I would be surprised if that gentle order did not take in turkeys as well. And that in its way makes us shepherds all. At least that is what I for one choose to believe. What about you?

‘Listening in on the Island’ MY MOTHER WRITTEN UP IN AN H. C. L. JACKSON DETROIT NEWS COLUMN IN 1939 My 94-year-old mother passed away in 2002 and I’m finally getting around to sorting through boxes of photos and clippings she stored and never got around to compiling into a scrapbook. My goal is to keep as much as I can as fond memories. By Pamela A. Frucci One clipping I came across made me chuckle. The writer I admire and try to emulate is H. C. L. Jackson who lived on Grosse Ile and wrote a column on the back page of the Detroit News called “Listening in on Detroit.” Mother was never mentioned by name but the 1939 column was about her bidding farewell to her husband and us three kids and going on a solo trip to see a Broadway show in New York. It happened she was sitting next to an older dignified gentleman---a retired colonel---who invited her out for dinner after the show. She accepted and made sure he behaved himself! At the fancy restaurant the maître-d fawned over the colonel as a Very Important Person who seemed to know every dignitary there. After dinner mother was deposited back at her hotel and H.C.L. Jackson’s final comment in his column was that “New York isn’t a wolfish city but a city with a heart.” PERSISTENCE PAYS OFF As a member of the board of Keep Michigan Beautiful, one of the board’s responsibilities is to keep our eyes open in our area of Michigan for potential award winners in the category of beautification, historic preservation, environmental enhancement, conservation efforts, site restoration, and native species protection. Every time I drive by Dr. Greg Raspberry’s Healthy Animal Clinic on West Jefferson in Trenton, I admire the beautiful display of flowers and even a topiary dog in the midst of the colorful garden in front. For the past five years I’ve dropped

“New York isn’t a wolfish city but a city with a heart.” off a form to fill out to be considered for a beautification award at KMB’s annual award luncheon in October and every year I haven’t convinced him to take the time to get the entry in on time. This August he surprised me and handed me the completed form with photos of his veterinary office. Dr. Raspberry said he and his aide completed the questions, got it typed, and ready to submit in less than an hour. I think he was feeling guilty for all the years he didn’t get around to it. I thanked him profusely and added that “persistence pays off”! LISTENING IN ON THE ISLAND INTERESTED IN STORIES OF OLD CARS Ever since I wrote in the July column about my 19-year-old Lincoln getting new life thanks to auto mechanic Eric Michael, a follow-up story in August mentioned a 23-yearold red Impala getting loving care by her owner over in Trenton. How many 67-year-old Ford pick-ups have you seen on Grosse Ile? Well, Bill Heinrich has one that looks like it just came off the assembly line. He sold his original pick-up but found a replacement that needed a lot of TLC in the way of engine work and a paint job. Bill found the exact green paint color it had originally and he’ll be displaying this relic at the Ford Yacht Club’s Car Show on Sept. 10 from noon to 6 p.m. Bill drives the Ford pick-up in the Island Fest parade with signs and riders from the G.I. Historical Society and also the pick-up will be on display at the Somewhere in Time event in Elizabeth Park. Then Bill puts it away for the winter months in his boathouse which also houses his historic wooden speed boat. Another old timer in Bill’s possession is a 1994 Oldsmobile that according to Bill “looks like new.” The Olds spends the winter months in his garage. Any other old car stories out there?

DOWNRIVER AUTO DETAILING

Downriver Auto Detailing was created for a certain kind of car owner. The kind of car owner who shows a certain kind of passion for fine automobiles. That same passion inspired the owner of Downriver Auto Detailing, Jay Cucinella, to preserve some of the most classic and iconic vehicles not only in the Motor City, but all throughout the U.S. “We really pride ourselves on doing great work” said Jay Cucinella, “My uncle and I check every single car before it leaves to make sure everything is up to our standards. And if people ever have any issue or question, they can always come to us. We pride ourselves on being the best Downriver.” Detailing and paint reconditioning is a true art form that is appreciated only by a few. Smokies CONTINUED from page 1 the time and called 911. She beams with pride over the actions of her staff. Joe’s family said when he woke up in the ER, he was concerned because he had left without paying his bill. He had no idea that not only did the staff save his life, they covered his bill. Joe’s daughters went back to pay his bill and told them that the doctors

in the ER told them that Mariah had performed CPR perfectly and without her quick action he wouldn’t have survived. Joe had surgery on July 24th at Oakwood in Dearborn. Exactly 4 weeks after the event, Joe, Jeanette and his family returned to Smokies with flowers in hand to express their gratitude. Joe, who looked great said he knows that Mariah was his Guardian Angel.

Downriver Diaper Need Awareness The Bottoms Up Diaper Bank is gearing up for their second diaper drive during the weekend of October 7 and 8. Diapers cost a family on average between $70 and $80 per month and cannot be purchased with WIC (Women’s Infants and Children) or Bridge cards (formerly known as food stamps). The Bottoms Up Diaper Bank was formed in November of 2015 to address the need of struggling families and provide diapers for qualified, lowincome families. Parents may miss work if they can’t provide the extra diapers required for daycare. Cloth diapers are another option, however many families don’t have their own washers and dryers, and not all Laundromats allow diapers to be washed in their machines. The goal of Bottoms Up is to ensure that parents have enough disposable diapers for their child to be in a daycare program when needed.

During the 2016 drive, over 10,000 diapers were collected and delivered to Fish and Loaves, a 501c3 food pantry that serves the communities of Allen Park, Brownstown Township, Dearborn Heights, Romulus, Southgate, Taylor and Woodhaven. Thanks to the generosity and support of volunteers and local churches, the Bottoms Up Diaper Bank has collected more than 225,590 diapers since November 2015. The Kroger store on Grosse Ile and the Grosse Ile Presbyterian Church will be the collection points for diapers during the drive on October 7 and 8. Monetary donations can be mailed to the Grosse Ile Presbyterian Church, 7925 Horsemill Road, Grosse Ile, MI 48138. Checks should be made out to GIPC “Bottoms Up” Diaper Bank. For more information, visit the Bottoms Up Diaper Bank Grosse Ile, MI Facebook page.

Red Devils CONTINUED from page 1 on each team. Almont quarterback Clay Schapman earned the award for his squad, as he had three rushing touchdowns in the game. Harwood scored the only points after he took the kickoff 69 yards for a touchdown right after Almont scored their first touchdown on a run from Jace Rinke. The extra point after was no good from freshman kicker Joey Pizzo. Junior Zak Thompson, made his first start on varsity as the starting quarterback as former quarterback Josh Shepard graduated last year. Thompson had a tough time as Almont was pressuring him all game making him throw two interceptions and getting sacked multiple times. “Up front, we came into the game with some inexperience, Almont took advantage, playing aggressively on defense. They kept constant pressure sending different blitz packages opening gaps on the line allowing the defensive lineman to make big plays,” stated sophomore offensive lineman and outside linebacker Johnny Blanzy. Blanzy has been a big force on the defense along with sophomore linebacker Josh Zemmin and senior defensive lineman Logan Brodeur. Almont scored three touchdowns in the second quarter and then one in the third. Grosse Ile’s first drive was looking very promising before they failed to complete on fourth down. The only other good looking drive from the team was at the start of the second half before Thompson got picked off in the end zone.

September 14 to October 11, 2017 • Page 25

“We played our hearts out and it was a dog fight on defense.”

— Riley Lowler, senior running back

“We moved the ball, just couldn’t get into the end zone,” stated head coach John Bodner. Grosse Ile played Airport in a tough battle the next week. Grosse Ile looked to rebound after the tough loss against Almont as they visited Airport Sept. 1. This was Grosse Ile’s first league game of the year and they wanted to start out on the right foot. Grosse Ile fell to Airport 14-8 in a tough game where they were in it the whole game. Airport has started their season 2-0 for the first time since the 2014 season. They beat Dundee and just recently Grosse Ile for a perfect start to the season. The team has had some big injuries this year so far with starting wide receivers Luke Harwood, Karar AlRekabi, and starting center, senior Collin Bammer. The first drive for Grosse Ile was looking very good before quarterback Zak Thompson threw an interception on Airport’s 12-yard line. For the rest of the half, Grosse Ile punted the ball three times and turned it over on downs once. Airport punted four times and the score stayed 0-0 going into halftime. Grosse Ile couldn’t get anything going in the run game but the passing game wasn’t too bad. The defense was backing the team up big time forcing a lot of punts. The second half didn’t start out very

well for Grosse Ile either. The team’s first drive on offense resulted in a three and out and Airport ran down the field and scored the game’s first touchdown on a 2-yard run. After the touchdown, the Devils looked to come back and get a score of their own. At first, the drive was stopped immediately forcing a punt, but the punt was muffed by Airport’s junior cornerback/running back Steffen Dyl. This got the team fired up and gave them a second chance to score on that drive which they really needed. Junior wide receiver Andrew Ramirez hauled in a big 17-yard reception to put the devils in the red zone for the first time that game. A couple plays later, Ramirez snagged a 6-yard touchdown reception on a good route to get the Devils on the scoreboard. The Devils had kicker issues last game so they decided to do a fake extra point attempt and did a direct snap to holder Riley Lowler who ran up the middle for the two point conversion. The Devils led 8-7. “I honestly didn’t think I was going to score a touchdown at all this year and I hope I get the chance to catch much more in the future. It was a great feeling,” stated Ramirez. That didn’t stop the Jets from coming straight back in the start of the fourth quarter. The next drive the Jets went the length of the field and scored

a 28-yard rushing touchdown by senior running back Mike Floor. The extra point after was good by senior kicker Justin Trout. On the next drive for the devils, they were moving the ball very well down the field with Thompson leading the offense. The drive came to a halt when the team had a 4th and 3. Thompson had nowhere to throw it so he kept it hoping to run for a first down but the Jets stopped Thompson about 6 inches short to make the Devils turn it over on downs for the second time that evening. The defense, however, came up with another huge stop with 1:49 left in the 4th quarter forcing yet another Jets punt, their fifth of the game. The Devils had one more chance to try to tie the game or take the lead. The team, however, couldn’t hold on after three straight incompletions and a interception on fourth down to end the game. “We played our hearts out and it was a dog fight on defense. We slipped up twice but fought hard and we struggled to execute on offense but we are working at it,” stated senior running back/ outside linebacker Riley Lowler. Lowler is going to have to take on a big role this year if the team wants to make the playoffs. “We knew it wasn’t going to be easy, but I feel as if we are very underestimated this season so that gives us a lot of motivation going forward,” stated junior offensive lineman/defensive lineman Jake Gaudette. The Devil’s face off against Jefferson in their next game at home on Sept. 8 and Huron at home Sept. 15 as they look to gain some confidence and get their first win of the season after a close battle at Airport.

News-Herald Recognizes Grosse Ile Girls’ Tennis

Grosse Ile Lady Devils Paid Mention For Spring Season Amongst their All-News-Herald announcements for the past spring season, the News Herald paid mention to our High School Girls’ Soccer team. Grosse Ile was ranked around the top all season in D3, with multiple members receiving honors. The Grosse Ile Lady Devils made it all the way to the regional championship game before suffering its first loss this past spring. With a 23-1-1 score for the season the Girls’ Soccer team won their fifth Huron League title, captured their sixth consecutive district crown, and reached the regional finals for the third year in a row. Over the course of the season they posted 18 shutouts, allowed only 10 goals all year and scored an average of six goals a game. 6 individual members were noted by the News Herald for excellent performance on the field. Kelsie Krauss capped off her soccer career with D3 First-Team All-State honors in 2017. The senior netted 22 goals for the Red Devils this past spring and picked up 25 assists. Alyson Lemerand’s dominant senior year made her the second Red Devil to pick up D3 First-Team All-State honors. The senior was the central defender on a squad that only gave up 10 goals all season. She also scored twice and had two assists. Chandler Donkers shined as the primary goalkeeper and picked up D3 Second Team All-State honors for

2017. The junior had 18 shutouts and only allowed eight goals all year, three of which were penalty kicks. Lindsay Miles picked up D3 Second-Team All-State honors in her junior season. She finished with 23 goals and 17 assists. As a central midfielder, she was consistently successful in transition. Lauren Naso earned a D3 All-State Honorable Mention in 2017. Only a sophomore, she netted 21 goals and had 12 assists for the Red Devils.

The News-Herald took the time to release their All-News-Herald Girls’ Tennis team this past month. Well represented at the head of D3 was our very own Grosse Ile High School Tennis team. There were 12 individuals who performed extremely well throughout the spring season. Elli Formentin was named D3 All-State in her senior season with the Red Devils. YOUR BETTER HEALTH

Kids Health & Fitness I can’t believe that it is back to school time already. The summer flew by in a blink of an eye, but oh what a summer it was for the kids. Everyday racing out of the house to catch up with their friends to play baseball, basketball, tennis or just to be outside. Reminding them to come back home before the streetlights came on. Wait, I was just reminiscing about By Dr. Michael Concessi, my childhood! a Grosse Ile resident Oh right, the kids today are more like 24/7 television, computer games, Facebook or Snapchat. Telling them that they need to shut these things off and go outside to play. It is sad, but true, kids today have more distractions that keep them from being more physically active like in times past. Children spend on average 6 to 7 hours per day using electronic devices such as computers, smart phones, tablets and TVs for their entertainment. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends kids 6 or older to no more than 2 hours total per day of electronic screen time. Today only 1 in 3 kids get enough physical active on a daily basis. This is why in the United States, 1 out of 3 kids are overweight or obese. If being overweight/obese were not enough to get one’s attention, here are some of the top reasons why kids should exercise and be more physically active; stronger muscles, stronger bones, stronger tendons, stronger ligaments, more muscle, higher metabolism, greater self-confidence, less chance of depression and lower injury risk. It is recommended that kids should get a minimum of 1 hour of physical activity each and every day. Exercise for children and teenagers 5-19 years of age should be a balance of: Cardio/Endurance training to build strong heart and lungs. This training should be on a daily basis, which should make up most of the recommended 1 hour per day of physical activity. Examples could include; walking, biking, tennis,

swimming, gymnastics and or rollerblading. Tone/Strength training builds muscle mass. Allow at least 3 times per week. Examples could include; running, gymnastics, climbing, pushups, pull-ups, sit ups, weights and or resistance bands. Bone Strengthening training builds the density of bone helping to prevent future bone fractures. Allow at least 3 times per week. Examples could include; jumping (jump rope or hopping), running, gymnastics, and weights. Flexibility/Stretch training should be done on a daily basis. They should be done in the form of warm-ups and cool downs to the 3 other forms of exercise. These help keep the ligaments and muscle tendons flexible and joints freely moving through a full range of motion. This in turn will aide in reducing the frequency of injuries. As you may notice there are duplicate forms of exercises that overlap in each category. This helps make it easier to achieve the daily or weekly time recommended for each category. As parents we need educate our kids, be role models and lead by example. Remember staying physically fit involves more than just being physically active. It involves eating a well-balanced diet including, cutting down on sugar, processed and junk foods. Quality and adequate sleep for one’s body is also an important component. One of the most important things we as parents can do is encourage healthy habits in our children, which will provide the foundation for a healthy and active life. In the next edition, my topic will focus on digestive issues.

People Do Have the Power Knowledge is Power is Responsibility

I

n Stacey Mitchell’s great 2006 book Big Box Swindle, she pulled back the curtain on the horrific practices of one of the biggest scourges on the American retail landscape EVER - Walmart. Read it. I am no elitist when it comes to merchants that cater to the various niches of retail that cater to all of us. There is a place for most, and those places are regulated quite well by the By Peter Rose market forces that determine supply and demand. My stores operate in what I think of as the “upper moderate” zone. We’re no Nieman Marcus, and we’re no Walmart, either. The success or failure of either one has little bearing on the success or failure of our locally owned businesses. So you might wonder why I care, one way or the other. I’m glad you asked! Remember, I’m a capitalist, not a CAPITALIST. CAPITALISTS see a niche served quite well by locally owned businesses (capitalists), and seek to take it away, redistributing wealth to parts not local. Monies that once stayed local, helping everyone within a wide circle, are now siphoned OUT of those communities to benefit the upper cadre of administrators and the shareholders of said corporation. Redistribution illustrated. The impact to the collective local communities across the nation has been stark and relentlessly downward. Malls became the place to be, and locals moved there … until the financial machinery of the mall ownership demanded national chains (because they paid higher rents and common area maintenance fees). Not only was it then unaffordable for locals, it became impossible to compete in those new venues. The CAPITALIST machinery picked winners, and correspondingly, losers as well. It’s easy to say “that’s the way the market works, deal with it”, but that seems specious at best. Defending this as normal is quite akin to “letting them eat cake”, a clear

indicator of the disconnect I have referred to. Until Amazon, the hands-down winner of the “corporate raidertake-noprisoners-marauding-Hun” award was held firmly by Walmart. Every Walmart opened results in net job losses for the communities they invade. Their stated, post-Sam Walton internal mission was (is) to put every local competitor out of business. Nice. That’s not capitalism. Walmart lowered prices by forcing American companies to shift manufacturing overseas, eliminating thousands of jobs while simultaneously lowering wages and benefits of their employees (foisting the responsibility of their health care needs off to the tax payers of the states in which they operate). Walmart is a nightmare blight. It has been sensationally lucrative for the Walton family, though, with (not kidding) their wealth being equivalent to roughly the lowest 40% of American citizens, some 125,000,000 people (it astounds me that this is just fine with Americans whose incomes have stagnated or diminished). That money is parked, generating interest for that family, and NOT being spent, so NOT circulating. Which slows down the “speed of money”. Money in the hands of the likes of most of us is readily spent in and around our communities. That money is needed to function, by and large. Right? So the paychecks get spent in all manner of ways that keep money percolating, and circulating within our local communities and our nation as a whole. Our paychecks keep other people employed, as we buy what we need and what we want within our means. CAPITALISM is a good idea gone bad through complete abdication of controls. It has had a devastating effect on domestic American commerce, and nobody wants to think about it (it IS hard). Now Walmart and Google are teaming up to challenge Amazon, the new leader in “winner take all, success through destruction of all competitors”. We can’t react if we don’t know. But what if we know, and don’t act?

The Senior Alliance by Gail Albin The Senior Alliance also known as TSA is little known to some citizens yet very important to so many. It is the Area Agency on Aging. There is a massive amount of information on the internet regarding TSA. If you do not have computer access, call the office of TSA and ask for an information packet to be mailed to your address. Home delivered meals, transportation, adult day care, legal, in home services, care management information and assistance are just a part of the services provided. Seniors can receive assistance and advice on staying comfortably in their home. Much effort is made to prevent hospital repeated returns. Home care patients are encouraged to

follow their medical advice and take medication without fail as directed. Home health care assistance may be offered. TSA Finance directors, Jack Frucci & Greg Genter of Grosse Ile made a report at the G.I. Township Hall for the Grosse Township board members and a few citizens. This was filmed on GI TV & will probably be shown on the Grosse Ile Channel 12, or WOW Channel 10. Grosse Ile Meals on Wheels are in the hands of the Grosse Ile division of Senior Alliance. This is a very important service to help aging citizens to stay well-nourished in their home. We are blessed to have all these services available. 734-722-2830 / 800-815-1112
