T
ime flies when you are having fun and that’s no truer than here at the Grosse Ile Grand. It is hard to believe, but May marks the fifth anniversary of the publication of the first edition of The Grand. In that time we’ve brought you the stories that make Grosse Ile such a great place to live. We’ve reported about the Island community being the safest place in Michigan, about the achievements of the Grosse Ile school district’s students and about the success of the Island’s prep athletes. Of course, as in any community, there have been
frustrations; uncertainty over the McLouth site, the free bridge closure and, naturally, the potholes come to mind, but on balance the benefits and joys of living on Grosse Ile far outweigh the nuisances. We’ve watched as Islanders lived for months with just one bridge and how community members fought through the depths of the pandemic and came out on the other side. You have been inspiring. We are pleased to be able to keep Grosse Ile residents informed and entertained and most pleased to provide an affordable platform for our great local businesses to reach their customers
We are grateful to officials, who each month contribute to our “From the Township” feature to help keep residents informed about a variety of township business. Those officials seem to know the value of a local newspaper, too. “The Grosse Ile Grand has been a great asset to the Island and its residents,” said current Grosse Ile Supervisor Jim Budny. “Being the one source where all the different issues come together. I can’t thank the Grosse Ile Grand’s staff enough for keeping us informed. “Happy Fifth Anniversary Grosse Ile Grand!”

Find everything you need at the Grosse Ile Yacht Club Location and amenities, those are the main reasons members and guests love the Grosse Ile Yacht Club. Located on the Southeastern tip of Grosse Ile, the club commands one of the most scenic spots on the island. The club features a lake-facing “front lawn” with access to the water and a swim raft for those who like to get into the water. It’s a place to meet and make friends. It’s a great place to eat or spend quality family time. It’s a great place to get easy access to the area’s best resource - Lake Erie and the Detroit River. “This is a great location for Lake Erie and the Detroit River boating and sailing,” said Club Commodore Will Evans. “There is protected anchorage nearby, it’s a wonderful place to hang out and it provides access to one of the world’s best fisheries.” GIYC is a great place for power boaters and maybe even a better place for sailors The sailing programs - both youth and adult - are the pride and joy of Grosse Ile Yacht Club. The junior sailing program provides learn-to-sail instruction and on-the-water safety to youth aged 8-18. The program also includes a junior sailing racing team to foster competition throughout the Midwest. The junior program is open to both members and non-members alike. For adults, the club has a sailing program headed by noted local yachtsman Brian Hartwell. The club offers sessions of four classes, taught both on the water and onshore, over a one-month period during the summer months. Classes are held once a week on weeknight evenings and focus on basic sailing techniques and on water safety, using the curriculum followed by US Sailing in their learnto-sail classes. Students (members or non-members) get the opportunity to steer, trim sails and learn to safely take their boat away from the dock and return. And the amenities GIYC offers can’t be beat: Waterfront Enjoyment The club has a beautiful front lawn for families to enjoy, including a swim raft, for an authentic “swimming hole” experience.

Cops, donuts and a good cause Services by Mimi’s Mission for autistic people gained nearly $11,000 in new funding thanks to Cops & Pastries, an April 24 event that raised smiles as well as dough – as in doughnuts. The challenge was for police officers – having fun with a stereotype – to eat 12 doughnuts in eight minutes or less. Twenty-two police departments, including Wyandotte and Grosse Ile, sent one cop to coach and one to quickly cram in the calories. Two hundred spectators, including many families with autistic children, cheered on the competition in the Allen Park Center for the Arts. Besides funding for programs and resources to help people with autism, the event also brought police officers into the public eye in a positive way, said Lisa Vilella of Wyandotte, founder and executive director of nonprofit Mimi’s Mission. “They’re real people who live in our neighborhoods,” she said. “It was great to have them out with the kids and shaking hands. It was great to see SEE COPS, PAGE 7

Continued from page 6 so much support for autistic families and for the police.” She often works closely with officers, offering through a private company 911 Ready Bags for first responders to carry in case they have dealings with someone with autism. Such a person might become agitated or extremely anxious exposed to sirens and flashing lights, for example. The bags contain items such as noise-reducing headphones and weighted blankets to help calm the autistic person. Two police officers – Allen Park Det. Jim Thorburn and Brownstown Lt. Andrew Starzec – serve on the Mimi’s Mission board. They came up with the idea for a cops-eating-doughnuts competition. When Vilella said in a meeting she

needed a fundraiser to hold in April, which is Autism Awareness Month, the men brought it up. “Jim said, ‘We’ve been kicking this idea around for a while,’ and there it started,” Vilella said. Ann Arbor Officer Jim Boylan downed 12 doughnuts in 7 minutes, 58 seconds, to win the event. Second place went to Brownstown Det. Bryan Ramsey – 10 ½ doughnuts in eight minutes. In third was Grosse Ile Patrolman Robert Piazza. “Officer Piazza did make it in for his midnight shift, but passed on lunch,” the Grosse Ile Police Department posted online after the event. All sorts of generous donors helped out with the event. One “gracious donor” called Vilella to congratulate her after the fun, and kicked in $2,500 extra. And then Eric Sloan of Sloan Environmental Services Inc. of Taylor chipped in another $5,000. “He’s very generous to us,” Vilella said. “I’m so humbled by the support and donations to help
autistic children and their families.” Stewart Fox of Sugarr Craft Donuts of Woodhaven made and donated more than 600 doughnuts to be sold to spectators and to be eaten in the competition. The officers had to devour eight cake-style doughnuts plus four glazed doughnuts decorated with sprinkles and blue frosting created by Sugarr especially to honor the boys in blue. Kekoa Brew Co. of Gibraltar offered coffee and donated $100, and Buffy’s Mexi-Casian Grill of Southgate brought a food truck and donated part of its proceeds. Bella Granite & Marble of Southgate donated “a ton of stuff for giveaways,” Vilella said, including balloons to decorate the space and a face-painter for the children on hand. Will the competition take place again next year? “Yes!” Vilella said.

LISTENING IN ON THE ISLAND
European trip was a real post pandemic tonic Since my husband Jack and I were in Europe from April 5 to 25, I didn’t have much contact with Island happenings, but I thought you might be interested in PAMELA A. our travels. Thanks to our travel FRUCCI agent Julie Kohn, she set us up for a flight to Amsterdam in the Netherlands and from there we boarded a Vikings ship on a river/canal cruise to see windmills and tulips. It was a fabulous experience! We boarded a boat In Amsterdam and toured the city and harbor. Then we were escorted to the Viking cruise ship, a magnificent craft with great meals and fellow passengers from all over, mostly Americans. On board on Easter Sunday, Viking gave all the passengers a chocolate Easter bunny. The countryside in the Netherlands is full of lush farmland which made for a pleasant sight along the canals. Our stops included the city of Arnsdorf
and their war museum. Since much of the fighting took place there, you re-lived World War II. We also saw a huge cemetery of those who died in the war. What a thrill it was to see the a18 ancient windmills still operating.in Kinderdijk. We got to visit one mill and meet the gentleman who lived and operated the mill. But the highlight of the cruise was our stop for a day in the Keukenhof tulip gardens. Thousands of tulips in a rainbow of colors were enjoyed by busloads of tourists from around the world. From Amsterdam we flew to London, where we were met at the airport by our daughter Marti, who was well acquainted with the city. She knew how to summon a taxi to get around. She had even set us up in an elegant historic hotel where we enjoyed their food and atmosphere. While in London, we had tickets for a tour and a Shakeperian play at the Globe Theater. I feel so lucky that Jack and I, a couple of old-timers, can still get around! In January 2023, we’ve booked a round the world tour!

Grosse Ile baseball team is just rolling along
I
t’s been a great start to the 2022 baseball season for the Grosse Ile baseball team. Coach Mario Garza’s team bolted out of the gate with eight wins in their first 11
games. Included in that stretch was the most recent Red Devils game before The Grand’s deadline, a stirring 1-0, eight-inning road victory over Huron League rival Carleton Airport on May 4. It was a pitcher’s affair from the outset and Grosse Ile had just six hits over the course of the eight innings. Cannon Kawadri had two of the hits and drove in the winning run in the top of the eighth. The star of the show, however, was senior pitcher Mike Madrigal, who was brilliant, going the full eight innings, allowing just three hits and striking out seven. He outdueled Airport’s Jason Himebauch, who also went eight innings. The victory avenged Grosse Ile’s only Huron League loss this season, a 5-3 setback against Airport on April 20. In that game, Airport got three runs in the third inning and although Grosse Ile fought back, the Jets never trailed after that. Hinebauch was the winning pitcher that day, outpitching Grosse Ile starter Bill Lowery. Kawadri, who apparently does not mind facing Hinebauch, had another two hits off him. Kawadri’s hits were two of just five the Red
Devils had that day. In other Huron League games this season, Grosse Ile blasted Monroe Jefferson 11-1, Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central 13-4 and Flat Rock 10-0 and defeated Huron 6-2 and Milan 3-0. The Jefferson game lasted just five innings, with Ty Garza collecting three hits and Lowery pitching the five innings for the win, The SMCC game was another laugher for the Islanders, who broke open a 6-3 game with seven combined runs in the sixth and seventh innings. The team pounded out 14 hits, three by Garza and two each by Kawadri and Jake Brown. The Huron League season-opening rout of Flat Rock was a mercy ruleshortened affair that lasted just six innings. Lowery threw a six-inning no-hitter at the Rams and Grosse Ile used a five-run third and a three-run fourth to secure the win. One run in the sixth invoked the mercy rule. Lowery helped his own cause with three hits and Brown and Kawadri had two each. The shutout of Milan was another Madrigal pitching gem as he pitched seven innings, allowing just two hits and striking out 10. Grosse Ile gave Madrigal all the support he needed with a run in the fourth inning, but they later added single runs in the sixth and seventh. Grosse Ile only had three hits in the game, but the Devils used them efficiently. Madrigal also earned the win over
Milan, although he ran into some seventh-inning trouble and needed some relief help to get the last out. He fanned 12 in the game. Grosse Ile scored four runs in the first inning to make the way a little smoother. Madrigal and Garza each had two hits. The Devils are 2-2 in non-league games, having beaten Allen Park and Gabriel Richard and fallen to Garden City and Saline. The 7-5 win over Richard on April 28 took eight innings and was a thriller. Richard scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 3-2 lead and was three outs away from victory. But Grosse Ile scored a run in the seventh and forced extra innings. Grosse Ile scored four more times in the top of the eighth, but had to endure a two-run rally by Richard in the bottom of the inning before finally putting the game in the bag. The only league team Grosse Ile has not yet faced this season is archrival Riverview, which is having a great campaign of its own. The early season meeting between the two was rained out and they will finally play on May 18 in a doubleheader. Following the close of the regular season, Grosse Ile will play in a Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 2 district tournament hosted by Trenton. Riverview and Detroit Martin Luther King will also be in the district, which begins May 26.

Let the good times roll …
The Special Olympics are back to putting smiles on faces It’s been a long time since our Special Olympians have been able to compete and have a good time but we are back! The Special Olympics Michigan Area 23 encoumpasses all of Wyane County, excluding Detroit, Hamtramck and Highland Park. Nearly 1,800 participants in 16 sports are under Area sherry 23’s justitiction. The halko sports are athletics, skiing, basketball, bocci, bowling, cycling, gymnastics, powerlifting, soccer, speed skating, cross country skiing, golf, poly hockey, snowshoeing, softball and swimming. The first sport to make a comeback for the Area 23 Olympians was bowling. More than 30 athletes filled the lanes at the recent regional tournament and the strikes and spares were bowling the participants over. The regional was the culmination of a season that featured some stringent health and safety protocols. The Special Olympics of Michigan had a plan to keep the teammates safe and it paid off. Competitors had to wear masks and maintain six feet separation and they were willing and able. Whatever it took to get back up, running and competing, they waited patiently. When they were put on hold for two years because of COVID-19, it was hard to keep the athletes healthy, both physically and mentally. I am part of this experience as I have a daughter who currently participates in the Jo Brighton Special Athletes in Wyandotte and has over the past eight years. When sports went down, so did my daughter’s spirits. It was almost painful to see her face fall when the next sport was canceled until further notice. You don’t realize how important a simple game of basketball can be to a person until they can’t do it. The interaction that The Special Olympics provides is more than just rolling a ball, making a basket, kicking a goal or competing for first place in a variety of sports. It is
about making friends, getting a smile, hearing that big “Yeah” from the quietest to the loudest. For those of you who know my daughter, she is not in the first category. The Special Olympics of Michigan has become such an integral part of our lives. When you first learn that your child might be different, you wonder how they will fit in. You wonder how they will find friends. You wonder how they will learn about the world. You wonder, you wonder, you wonder. Then you find your way. The Special Olympics has helped us find our way. So keep looking for those smiling faces, those proud athletes, those proud coaches, those proud volunteers, those proud parents, those proud families. We are back! Grosse Ile girls run second at Marauder Invite The Grosse Ile track teams recently went through a stretch of three invitationals in two weeks and the best effort among ther three was the sexcon displaced claimed by the Red Devil girls at the eight-team Marauder Invitational on the last day of April. The Red Devils girls scored 132 points and finished just two points behind host and meet champ Carlson. Huron was third with 110. Prior to that showing, Grosse Ile’s girls were sixth at the Warrior Invitational and after that they were sixth at Monroe Jefferson. Sophomore Kaitlyn Molnar had a big point day at Calson, finishing first in the long jump, second in the pole vault and fourth in the 100 meters. Distance specialist Andi Fulmer was a two-time winner, easily winning the mile and the half-mile. Natalie Christnadel was first in
the high jump and teammate Riley Kerr was second and the Devil also won the 4x100 and 4x800 relays. Not winning but also scoring for the Red Devils were Alyssa Ice, Nicole Roque, Cecilia Vesperman, Margaret Justusson, Samantha Justusson and Lucia Caballero Bentley. The Grosse Ile boys were ninth at Woodhaven, fourth at Carlson and sixth at Jefferson. Scoring for the boys at Carlson were Ahmed Kanso, Lucas Centlevre, Joey Gall, Alex Slusne, Tyler Swick, Jake Reno, Sam Vesperman, Serafim Dionyssopoulos and Lorenzo Thrasher. The Devils wrap up the season this month. They were at the Ram Relays on May 6, face the Metro Classic on May 14, MHSAA regionals on May 20 and the Huron League Championships on May 24

Grosse Ile freshman Sam Vesperman broke the longstanding Grosse Ile High School pole vault record at the Marauder Invitational at Carlson High School on April 29. Vesperman, who was the MVP of the wrestling team last winter, sailed over 13-feet, 6-inches to set the mark. He made a couple of runs at going higher and just missed, meaning the new record may not be set in stone. Stay tuned.

Happy Hebda Day! Photos by Dave Chapman
Rowing teams meet on the the riverfront for 55th annual event The 55th annual Hedba Memorial Challenge Cup was held April 20 on the Trenton Channel and the Grosse Ile Red Devils placed in seven events. Calrson won the girls title and the overall championship. The wins were the first in school history for Calrson. On the boys side, Saline won with Riverview claiming second. The Hebda Cup features a 1500-meter course on the Detroit River that runs between the western shore of Grosse Ile and the Wyandotte shore. Races start south of BASF Park and the boats travel north, against the current, with the finish line back at the park. Boats are launched from a dock behind the Wyandotte Boat Club, which sponsors the regatta. Grosse Ile’s best finishes were seconds in the men’s Junior 4 and in the Novice 4. The Red Devils also had two thirds, two fourths and a sixth.

CULINARY CAPERS Spring is here, at last! And one of Evelyn spring’s first and Cairns favorite vegetables, asparagus, will be in the spotlight at the National Asparagus Festival June 11 in Hart Michigan’s Oceana County, known as “The Asparagus Capital of the Nation.” The festival, held held since 1974, will include the coronation of an Asparagus Queen, a scholarship presentation, an arts-and-crafts fair, two stages featuring live music, an asparagus-recipe tasting, an asparagus farm tour and a parade of bands, floats and dignitaries. The queen will tour the state for a year promoting asparagus. Because May is National Asparagus Month, I’m celebrating by baking an awesomely easy and delicious asparagus quiche using the following recipe shared by Melva Bonis of Grosse Ile. MELVA BONIS’ EASY ASPARAGUS QUICHE 1 premade unbaked 9-inch pie shell ½ pound asparagus spears 2 scallions (green onions), thinly sliced 1 tablespoon flour 2 cups shredded Swiss or Gruyere cheese 3 eggs 1 cup heavy (whipping) cream ½ teaspoon salt ¼ teaspoon dried basil leaves 1/8 teaspoon cayenne Preheat the oven to 425 degrees. Bake the pie shell for 6 to 7 minutes. Set aside. Place the asparagus spears in a skillet with water to cover and cook until tender crisp, about 5 minutes. When cool enough to handle, set aside 3 stems and cut the remainder into ½-inch lengths. Then slice the reserved stems in half lengthwise and set aside. Combine the asparagus, onion and flour and pour into the crust and sprinkle with the cheese. Whisk the eggs, cream, basil, salt and cayenne and pour over the cheese. Bake at 325 degrees 25 minutes, then arrange the reserved asparagus on top of the quiche in a wheel pattern. Return the quiche to the oven for another 5 or 10 minutes until a knife inserted into the center comes out clean.
Optional: 2/3 cup crisply cooked bacon can be placed in the crust before adding the asparagus mixture. Last month, I observed National Carrot Day (April 4) by baking an awesomely easy and healthful recipe for carrot raisin muffins provided by Ronnie Padmos of Trenton, who said her grandchildren love them. (I do, too.) Ronnie said she used to distribute the recipe at Detroit Area Agency on Aging programs for senior citizens years ago. The recipe calls for shredding the carrots, but I followed her suggestion for chopping them to about ¼ inch dice instead in my food processor. GRANDCHILDREN’S FAVORITE MUFFINS 2 large carrots (1 ½ cups), grated or finely chopped 2 large eggs ½ cup applesauce 2/3 cup sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla 2 tablespoons vegetable oil 1 cup flour 1 teaspoon baking soda ½ teaspoon salt 1 tablespoon cinnamon 1/2 cup raisins Preheat oven to 350 degrees and coat a 12-section muffin pan with vegetable cooking spray. Peel the carrots and grate (or finely chop to about ¼ inch). In a large bowl, combine the eggs, applesauce, sugar, vanilla and oil, mixing until well blended. In another bowl, combine flour, baking soda, salt and cinnamon. Slowly add the dry ingredients into the applesauce mixture until just blended. Stir in the carrots and raisins. Divide the batter into the muffin cups, filling about ½ full. Bake 25 minutes or until lightly browned. Let cool 5 minutes. Remove and cool completely. Makes 12 muffins. \ (Do you need a special recipe, or do you have a favorite recipe or tip you would like to share? Please send your request or culinary contribution to Evycairns@aol.com and include your email address or telephone number.) HAPPY COOKING!

May 21st Event to Preserve Open Spaces on Grosse Ile
Dump the Junk/Find a Treasure is Back! The Greenways/Open Space Commission and the Department of Public Services is happy to announce that the popular “Dump the Junk/ Find a Treasure” will be held on Saturday, May 21, from 9 a.m. to 4 Bill p.m. at the DPS Stevenson yard, 8555 Groh Road. The two-fold “Dump the Junk/Find a Treasure” activity is designed to eliminate illegal dumping on Grosse Ile vacant lots or preserved Open Space properties, and to recycle, reuse, or repurpose “slightly used” treasures to those who want them. This event is open to Grosse Ile residents only, and excludes any commercial contractors or their refuse
haulers. Proof of residency must be shown upon request for admission. For the “Dump the Junk” disposal, dumpsters will be provided by Priority Waste and are available for residents to dispose of items that cannot be picked up through normal curbside pickup. For those residents of apartments and condos (who do not have access to curbside pick-up through Priority Waste), you will be allowed to bring refuse or furniture for the junk dumpsters only. Apartment or condo residents must be prepared to show proof of residency to the apartment or condominium in which you reside. Acceptable items for disposal include yard waste, large logs, shrubs, wood, building materials such as tile, marble and drywall. Bricks, concrete, or cement blocks are allowed and
must be placed in the 20 yard dumpsters. Unacceptable items include mattresses, couches, toilets, electronics, televisions, refrigerators, freezers, or any freon-bearing appliances are not allowed. Additionally, railroad ties or any hazardous waste materials are prohibited. Fritz Enterprises will provide a dumpster that will take dishwashers, stoves, metal patio furniture, tire rims, or other metal items that can be scrapped. Waddell Tire will accept and will recycle auto or small trailer tires— provided they are off the rims. No semi-truck or commercial tires may be brought to the DPS yard. For the “Find a Treasure” opportunity, residents can drop off or
pick up gently used furniture like old tables and chairs, end tables, bikes, scooters, working household items and other artistic collectibles. At the end of the day, the Greenways/Open Space Commission is working with Cass Community Social Services and other charities to donate the perfectly good “treasures” which remain to needy families who can immediately use them. A WinWin proposition for many sides. So, mark your calendars. Time to do your spring cleaning. Get rid of the clutter. Minimize your life. And, in the long run, keep Grosse Ile clean. Dump the Junk. Find your Treasure. May 21, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. 9555 Groh Road.

What you need to know ahead of the 2022 Michigan Primary Election Michigan’s primary election will be here before you know it along with election-related deadlines. Here’s what you should know ahead of Election Day on Tuesday, Aug. 2, 2022. What are the deadlines I need to know? Bryan Deadline to register to vote: Friel Tuesday, Aug. 2 at 8 p.m. Grosse Ile Twp. You’ll be able to fill out and submit your ballot while there. Online – Registered voters can request an absentee ballot through the Secretary of State’s website, mvic.sos.state.mi.us/AVAppliction, before 5 p.m. the Friday before the election. Call the township clerk’s office and ask that an application be mailed to you Download an application to return by mail or in person to the clerk’s office In person at the township clerk’s office Absentee ballots will be available the last week of June in the clerk’s office. For those of you on our permanent absentee mailing list, we will be mailing out applications at the end of May. Where can I drop off my absentee ballot? Your completed absentee ballot should be received by the township clerk’s office by 8 p.m. on Election Day. You can submit by mail, or by handdelivering the ballot to the clerk’s office or the drop box in front of township hall. If you are returning
your ballot within two weeks of Election Day, we recommend hand-delivering your ballot to avoid possible postal delays. Did my ballot arrive? All registered voters can track their ballot by looking up their information on the Secretary of State website, mvic.sos.state.mi.us/Voter. I submitted my ballot. Can I change my vote? If a voter has already voted absentee and wishes to change their vote (because the candidate has dropped out of the race, or for any other reason), a voter can spoil their ballot by submitting a written request to the township clerk. The voter must sign the request and state if they would like a new absentee ballot mailed to them or if they will pick it up in person at the clerk’s office. This request must be received by 5 p.m. the Friday before the election if received by mail. An absentee ballot that has been returned to the clerk may be spoiled in person at the clerk’s office until 10 a.m. the Monday prior to the election. An absentee ballot that has not been returned to the clerk may be spoiled in person at the clerk’s office until 4 p.m. the Monday prior to the election. There is no option on Election Day to spoil an absentee ballot that has been received by the clerk. What if I received an absentee ballot but want to vote in person? If a voter has not returned his or her ballot, the voter can surrender the ballot or sign a statement stating that the ballot was lost or destroyed and vote at the polls. What if I want to vote in person? Michiganders who would prefer to vote the oldfashioned way can do so in person on Election Day at the polls, which will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Where is my polling place? You can contact the township clerk’s office or you can visit the Secretary of State website at mvic.sos. state.mi.us/Voter to find your polling location. Can I vote for more than one party on my ballot in the State Primary? You may vote in one party section only; you cannot “split your ticket.” If you vote in more than one party section, your partisan ballot will be rejected. I rave about Wyandotte quite a bit, perhaps you’ve picked up on that. Since I started writing this column, my Wyandotte-centric orientation has intensified as an astounding explosion of investment on and around Biddle has taken place. I admit to being biased, but even if I had no such slant, what has happened in the last few years is worth marveling at, and we are nowhere near past that investment surge. But I’m eager to share any Peter enthusiasm that I feel in our Rose region, or anywhere else that inspires me. Small, medium and larger cities have the capacity to dazzle me, and when they do, I try to learn and share. I am never satisfied, and I never tire of the search for things that ignite my imagination. For all the buzz of Wyandotte, I see so much that should be, needs to be better. If other cities have lots of plants hanging on the light poles, I covet the vibe they give and want more in my town. If I see cool murals on the hidden sides and backs of buildings that would otherwise be dreary and run down, I want that too. Green belts, bike lanes, bike racks, public conversation arrangements of benches…. stuff like that. It’s not a matter of finding fault; it’s all about finding weak links and changing them into something wonderful, or functional, or efficient. All of the above, and more. But all of that is not what makes me obsess the way I do. The real inspiration comes from something different, and I think I have yet to name it in all these articles. It’s very simple, very obvious, and very magical: Everything that ignites this imagination - all of it - derives from individual people. Specific, real people, whose unique energies,“insanities” and visions, whose drive,
perseverance and joy are personified in the businesses that they created, and that, together and apart from all the other obsessed business owners around them, make a city compelling and irresistible. For every single local and independent business of every kind, there is a person, or a few people, which are the business. Start rattling off the names in your head of all the places you go that exist because of that one person, or few people. Wyandotte happens to enjoy a very concentrated variety of indies, but there are hundreds of businesses in our Downriver area alone
that are all about people that change our world. They know us when we walk in. Their take on food or drink, or apparel or furniture, on hair cutting or flowers, so unique and special, is irreplaceable, and not duplicatable. In one of my earliest columns, I called out a trendline in the country, perhaps the world. It’s what I refer to as a pervasive disconnect in so many people’s behaviors when it comes to being aware of the power they wield to make real differences in
how and where they spend. I find it even more obvious when I replace the idea of a business with the idea of a person. We all have the ability to make a person’s day, or to not think about it that way, and just get what we want from impersonal websites or fake, replicated mass market choices. We have real, and powerful abilities to support the personalities that make our communities, or not. People. How simple. How amazing. How did that disconnect happen? Through relentless marketing and power of media of the large and publicly traded businesses that have infested every nook and niche of American commerce. Every single thing we buy from them enriches people that have no interest in the business they’ve created to try to rip off the local businesses that local people built. CVS has enormous control over where drugs are available. Independent pharmacies are being squeezed out by huge corporations. Men’s Wearhouse can blitz airwaves and create top of mind awareness, while selling grossly inferior products to people they don’t know or care about – to benefit shareholders and CEOS that are not here. I’m describing a phenomenon, not criticizing anyone in particular, but rather, bemoaning the truth that we have been, and continue to be duped and robbed of our power. Yet independents still survive, still persevere. And we are the beneficiaries. Or, we’re disconnected, supporting the very forces that are deliberately, on purpose and by design, trying to divert as much money as they can from our communities we love. Localism is about protecting and nourishing our communities. On purpose, by design. When we do, we see the magic generated by countless people that insist on prevailing, to give us such better service, variety, and personality. Not bad, this magic thing.

Time to clear up the confusion about Estate Planning ... The following definitions lack legal precision, but makes it easier to get a clear picture of what may be needed in your case. ■ Will – letter of intent of where you want your personal property to go – or not go. ■ Living Will – Documents your wishes during your final days including final healthcare choices and possibly your burial wishes. ■ Trust – This is a “company” that you start, and you become the CEO, “Trustee” and “Settlor.” The company outlives you, but continues to manage your assets as if you were alive by the successor CEO – whom you designate. ■ Power of Attorney – Financial and Healthcare – you need both – the first so someone can pay your bills, the second, sometimes called a Patient Advocate, designates someone to make “hallway at the hospital” decisions to take the stress off the family. ■ Ladybird Deed – probably the best thing that has happened to owning a home. I love these deeds – you grant yourself a life estate – in your own property - but retain the power to sell or borrow against the property. If you do not sell before you pass, this “springs” the house out of your estate, and your heirs have instant ownership, subject to any mortgage or taxes owed or similar. Again, this is just a general description of the more popular terms – no one choice is a “silver bullet” but depending on how your estate gets planned out you can expedite a clean and clear process for the assets you worked a lifetime to save. Why wouldn’t you want to do that? Stop by or call and make an appointment and I’ll tell you what you’re going to need to do this right. To my numerous former clients – thank you for allowing me to draft your estate plan!

While looking through some old files, I came upon the May – 2017 edition of our VFW Magazine. Gracing the cover was the very lovely Hollywood Actress, Doris Day who recently passed on at the age of ninety seven. The photo was from the year 1950 during the years that Hollywood stars glamorized the Buddy Poppy Program. That photo prompted me to do a little research and put this article together. When the first shots of World War I were fired in the summer of 1914, Canada, as a member of the British Empire became involved in the war. In April of 2015 Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae was stationed in the trenches near Ypres, Belgium in an area known as Flanders. During the bloody second battle of Ypres, in the midst of the warfare, McCrae’s friend, 22-year-old Lieutenant Alexis Helmen was killed by artillery fire and buried in a makeshift grave. The following day McCrae, after seeing the field of makeshift graves blowing with wild poppies wrote what would become the most famous war poem ever written. Here it is word for word as he wrote it: IN FLANDERS FIELD By Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae In Flanders Fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky, The larks, still bravely singing, fly, Scarce heard amid the guns below, We are the dead, Short days ago, We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved and now we lie, In Flanders Fields. Take up our quarrel with the foe, To you, from failing hands we throw, The torch, be yours to hold it high. If ye break faith with us, who die, We shall not sleep, though poppies grow, In Flanders Fields. The poppy soon became the flower of remembrance for the men and women in Britain, France, The United States and Canada who have died in service to their country.
HAVE YOU HEARD OR DO YOU KNOW WHAT MAKES CRAWFORD CHIROPRACTIC CLINIC A UNIQUE OFFICE? WE ARE THE ONLY CHIROPRACTIC OFFICE ON THE ISLAND Our office is located at 7780 Macomb St. It’s a small white house in between T.A.I.L.S and Richardson’s Auto, across the street from The Bakery.
McCrae’s poem continues to be an important part of Remembrance Day Celebrations in Canada and Europe as well as Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day in the United States. Our VFW Post 7310 conducts poppy sales annually. Profits from these sales continue to increase each year. These profits are used exclusively: l. For the aid, assistance, relief and comfort of needy or disabled veterans or members of the Armed Forces and their dependents and the widows and orphans of deceased veterans. 2. For the maintenance and expansion of the VFW National Home and other facilities devoted exclusively to the benefit and welfare of the dependents, widows, and orphans of disabled, needy or deceased veterans or members of the Armed Forces. 3. For necessary expenses in providing entertainment, care and assistance to hospitalized veterans or members of the Armed Forces. 4. For veteran’s rehabilitation welfare and service work. 5. To perpetuate the memory of deceased veterans and members of the Armed Forces and to comfort survivors. From its inception, the Buddy Poppy Program has helped the VFW live up to its motto, “to honor the dead by helping the living.” The Buddy Poppy – small red flower symbolic of the blood shed in World War I by millions of Allied Soldiers in defense of freedom – was originally sold to provide relief for the people of war-devastated France. Later, its sale directly benefited thousands of disabled and down-and-out American Veterans.

Located in Downtown Wyandotte on the corner of First and Maple streets, the fine-dining eatery is housed in the historic building that once housed the National Bank of Wyandotte, hence the name, The Vault. The Vault celebrated its first anniversary on April 15. Doulos and his restaurant co-founders Carole Bell-Doulos and Suzette Balaskas have created a restaurant that offers a variety of locally sourced foods and takes special care to cater to those with allergies and other sensitivities. The menu features vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options. The Vault’s exceptional menu features prime cut meats, wild-caught seafood, locally raised chicken, locally-sourced baked goods, an extensive wine list and craft cocktails. The restaurant serves lunch and dinner six days a week and there is a lunch special featuring a $10 Wagyu beef burger. If you haven’t yet been to The Vault, you owe yourself a visit. Their hours are:

Enjoy Our Outdoor Dining on Two Patios! The upbeat setting of downtown balances the old roots of the bank you can still see today. There is really little need to introduce anyone to Mr. Nick’s. The West-Road bar is pretty much a Trenton institution. Instead, meet Rob Bruner and his wife Rosanne, who purchased the venerable establishment in 2019. Yep, they jumped into the Rob and Rosanne Bruner bar/restaurant business one year before COVID and the subsequent shutdowns. The new owners did a major remodel and upgraded the equipment and had the place really humming before the shutdowns. Those shutdowns took a toll, as it did on all businesses, but Rob said business these days is just about back to pre-pandemic levels. Bruner said the business has been helped greatly by “a really awesome staff.” That staff numbers around 15 and some of them have worked at Mr. Nick’s for decades. Bruner said that because of the bar’s Irish roots, the corned beef sandwiches have alway been a favorite at the bar and the upgraded menu now includes fresh-from-the-lake perch and prime rib on Fridays and Saturdays. So if you’re looking for a meal or a beverage, the owners and staff at Mr. Nick’s would like to invite you by.

GI School Board approves school strategic plan “Planning is bringing the future into the present so you can do something about it now.” Alan Lakein At their regular meeting of the Grosse Ile Township Schools, held on April 26, 2022, the Board of Education unanimously approved the adoption of the Strategic Plan for 2022-2027. The approval of the five year plan is the culmination of a process that initially began in July, 2021 and continued over several months in determining goals and strategies, as well as a 10 year capital improvement plan to improve learning experiences at all levels. Bill Superintendent Valerie Orr Stevenson extolled the good work of all the school and community members who took part in the strategic planning process. Orr said, “I want to acknowledge and express my appreciation for the tons and tons of people who were involved in developing the strategic plan. It’s been a great process and I believe it’s because of the people who were involved in it.” Board President Dr. Daniel Murphy supported Orr’s comments, saying, “A lot of time has been spent on this. This plan is very thorough, well done. I have seen many strategic plans and this is one of the better ones. Well done.” The strategic planning process was facilitated by Oakland University professors from the Department of Educational Leadership, Dr. Kay Cornell and Dr. Suzanne Klein. District demographic trends and future facilities projections were guided by Plante, Moran CRESA. In a powerpoint presentation to the Board of Education and the community, Superintendent Orr identified the three main goals of the strategic plan: Personalized Learning Experience, SchoolCommunity Partnerships and Future-Focused Learning Environments. Strategies to realize the Personalized Learning include “graduate profiles encompassing 21st century skills and dispositions all Grosse Ile Township Schools graduates will possess; a safe, inclusive culture that nurtures healthy, resilient learners; clear, measurable goals focused on increasing student achievement; high quality instruction in every classroom by utilizing a research-based instructional framework; a childcentered curriculum aligned to state standards, reflecting the GITS graduate profile; and personalized learning providing opportunities for students to move through the curriculum at their own pace.”
The second goal of School-Community Partnerships includes nurturing “ a culture that values involvement and feedback from the community; implementing a systematic process of communication across various media; and community engagement to better utilize personal, professional, and financial resources.” Strategic goal three of Futurefocused Learning Environments involves “creating a 10-year Capital Improvement Plan that improves learning experiences at all levels, K-12, and protects the community’s investment; emphasis on the 4 C’s— creating learning environments ORR that promote creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, and communication; expanding programming; and assuring fiscal responsibility regarding funds

secured through the community’s investment. In early March, the District sent out a Capital Planning survey and received over 1,000 responses from citizens on what they would like to see in future capital improvements, and what they would support both educationally and financially. Now that the Strategic Plan has been approved by the Board of Education, a series of Community Forums was held (after our deadline) on May 2 at 7 p.m. and May 11 at noon. Going forward, community input is sought and welcomed throughout the next phase, before launching the Strategic Plan in the fall of 2022. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns contact Superintendent Valerie Orr at orrv@gischools.org or call 734-362-2581.

Roosevelt High School Class of 1972 planning 50-year reunion Dave Gorgon Plans are under way for the 50-year reunion of the Theodore Roosevelt High School Class of 1972 in Wyandotte. Organizers have scheduled the reunion for 6 to 11 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 1, 2022 at the Wyandotte Boat Club, One Pine St. It’s the same weekend as the high school homecoming activities. “We’re coming home after a half century,” said Mark Slagle, a class member who is leading the planning committee. The reunion will include a buffet dinner, cash bar and a raffle to win Roosevelt High School items. All classmates will receive a memento to remember the occasion. “The Wyandotte Boat Club has an enormous wooden deck to enjoy conversation during the nice weather along the Detroit River in addition to the inside dining area,” said Slagle, who lives in Riverview. “There will be lots of room for everyone.” Tickets are $40 per person ($45 if purchased after August 31) for classmates; $20 per teacher. “We fondly remember many teachers who taught us lessons not only from books but also life,” Slagle said. “We’d love to see our teachers and encourage them and administrators to join us for this special celebration as we would like to reminisce with them as well.” Classmates are encouraged to attend the homecoming football game starting at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30, at the football field. The gathering will be hosted by Roosevelt Athletic Director Tom DeSana, a recent inductee into the Roosevelt Hall of Fame. On Saturday morning, participants are invited to a tour of the high school starting at 10 o’clock. The tour will be led by Alana Paluszewski, another distinguished Roosevelt graduate, respected historian and author of several books, including The Pride of Wyandotte, History of Roosevelt High School. Slagle said Paluszewski “is the expert on the history of Roosevelt High School, from the initial building of the school in 1921, its opening in 1923 and through the current time.”
There is no cost for the tour. There is no registration. Attendees are asked to show up by 9:45 a.m. at the Eureka Road entryway doors at the west end of the building. The tour will last about 90 minutes based on the interest by the classmates in the school’s history. Paluszewski’s book will be available for purchase along with a biography of Ann Marston, the first professional female archer and USA national archery champion who grew up in Wyandotte; and a recently published book, Wyandotte at War: A Michigan Town Fights Back in WWII. The current reunion committee has been organizing the Class of 1972
reunions every five years for the past 30 years. The committee members say they are a very close-knit team that stays in contact with one another, even in reunion off years. Current and past team members live in Wyandotte, Riverview, Trenton, Grosse Ile and many other Downriver communities. “I was really shy and wall-flowerish in school and didn’t have a lot of friends,” said Darlene (Morton) Randazzo, who lives in Trenton and serves as recording secretary of the reunion planning committee. “What’s really interesting to me now is that the walls are down when you get to a certain age. I’m not intimidated
to talk to people like I was before. It’s nice to get to know people that I wasn’t friends with in high school. I think life is too short to not reconnect and remember the fun times we had together and discover the things we had in common.” Like Randazzo, Beryl (McNeil) Robbins has served on the planning committee for 40 years. “I meet new people every time I go to a reunion,” said Robbins, who returned to Wyandotte in 2020 after retiring from the Department of Justice at the U.S. Attorney’s Office. “Members of the planning committee are like family. None of us hung out with each other in school, but we’ve become close friends since then.” Slagle said that with the exception of the 10-year and 20-year reunions, recent class get-togethers have been more casual, focusing on a relaxed atmosphere so classmates can catch up with other classmates on the many activities encompassing their lives since the prior reunion – or longer. “A portion of the famous brick wall that once enclosed the Roosevelt High School football field is often painted by students for various school events,” Slagle said. “Classmates painted the wall just before our graduation in 1972 and the reunion committee kept up this tradition and painted the wall again in 2002 with our class graduating year of 1972 written on it.” Classmates are encouraged to bring spouses and/or significant others to the reunion. “While many classmates live Downriver and within Michigan, we look forward to seeing classmates from all over the country, including Hawaii,” Slagle said. He encouraged class members to “help make this the best reunion yet by sharing the information with classmates you stay in touch with so they too can attend this special event.” All of the information is posted on the website rhsclassof1972.blogspot. com. Questions can be directed to Mark Slagle at (734) 341-0793 or wyandotteroosevelt72@gmail.com.
