Homecoming Celebration McLouth Steel

Developments

T

he entire Island was radiating with energy over homecoming weekend this year. We saw our homecoming celebration a little earlier then usual, in late September. Many of us welcomed the beautiful days and warm temperatures this meant for our weekend of celebration. The weekend started off with the Annual Homecoming Parade, which boasted our very own GIHS Marching Band at the center of it. They delivered a spectacular performance as they marched their way down our Macomb Street. Following them were each classes float, decorated to fit this year’s theme of “mobile games”. After each float had run the route and made its way back to the high school, the judging committee decided that the Senior Class had won this year’s float competition. Amongst the floats and fancy See Homecoming, page 22

By Cameron Colwell The long vacant and abandoned McLouth Steel site on Jefferson could be transformed into an automotive manufacturing facility after Wayne County signed off on a $4 million deal with Grosse Pointe billionaire Manuel “Matty” Moroun. Many island residents have been following any happenings about the property closely. The outcome of the plot across the river could impact us in a number of ways. The Wayne County Commission approved the proposal in late September, making way for a property transaction that will move the site to the county’s land bank and into the hands of Moroun. Moroun’s real estate company, Crown Enterprises Inc., agreed to demolish the structures at the foreclosed McLouth site in

TELESCOPING THE TOWNSHIP GROSSE ILE LOSSES TWO GOOD MEN: ROBERT WALTERS AND WALT STOLL The Rotary Club’s Citizen of the Year in 2016, Robert Walters passed away Sept. 19. He was honored for his many years of service to the community as a volunteer fireman for 40 years, founder and organizer of the Knights of Columbus, a worker on the toll bridge By Pamela A. Frucci repair, as well as many volunteer activities. Robert was an active member of our VFW having fought in the Korean War. He is interned at the Sacred Heart cemetery where he was a member. Walt Stoll’s service at the Grosse Ile Presbyterian Church on Sept. 16 was a musical tribute to this fine gentleman. Since he was involved in the Seaway Chorale, the Grosse Ile Chorale, and sang barbershop, members of these singing groups turned out to perform at his service. Walt and Sue Stoll had in the past hosted numerous foreign exchange students who became family to them. They either were there at the memorial service in person, sent a message of condolences, or appeared in a video from China. Walt and Sue traveled to New Zealand with the Grosse Ile Chorale and coincidently while there a barbershop quartet, the Musical Island Boys, won the gold medal at the International Barbershop convention back in the States and they were from New Zealand. WESTCROFT GARDENS’ FORMER MANAGER DENISE DEBEAUSSET HAS RETIRED There’s a new manager of Westcroft Gardens now that Denise deBeausset has retired and moved to Tennesee to be with her sister. At least she’s trying retirement, according to the new manager Erica Jackson, a niece. Erica has worked with Denise in the past and has this year taken over the management of the gardens. Both Denise and Erica are descendants of William and Alexander Macomb, the brothers who bought the Island from the Potowatomi Indians on July 6, 1776.

Since I’ve been working as a volunteer at the Grosse Ile Historical Society, I had access to a mountain of material left to us by the family of Richard White, deceased, also related to the Macomb brothers. He had compiled a typed version of the family tree as well as a large scale drawing of the family tree donated by his family. We have several of these family trees, so I brought one to Erica who has been clearing out the old office of Westcroft Gardens. It’s now better organized and Erica is mounting old photos of the gardens and will include the family tree framed. Erica plans on having the office open for those who visit Westcroft Gardens to enjoy a walk through the office and learn more about the history of the gardens and the Stanton family. Ernie Stanton founded the gardens back in 1917 when he returned from WWI having suffered from

mustard gas poisoning. His doctor recommended working outside rather than in an office. Ernie took the family farm that had raised hay to feed horses and transformed it into a charming walkable garden with trees and in particular azaleas and rhododendrons that bloom beautifully in May. Ernie hybridized the plants to accustom them to a Michigan climate. The plants, along with plantable flowers and scrubs are available for sale at Westcroft Gardens. Besides the sales area, the gardens are open to the public to stroll through from dawn to dusk. DOGI-POTS TO BE INSTALLED FOR USE BY THOSE WHO WALK THEIR DOG An idea that has been finally brought to fruition by both the BPAC Commission (Bicycle Pedestrian Advisory Commission) and T.A.I.L.S. (volunteers who service the animal

shelter.) The first of what will be up to 10 Dogi-Pots has been mounted by Bob Firmstone, a member of BPAC, on the pole next to the Commons at the corner of Macomb and Meridian. The pot holds 800 small bags and pet owners are encouraged to use one when walking their dogs. Bob, who also drives one of the school buses, said they are working out where the other Dog-Pots will be located to make it convenient for dog owners to scoop up their dog’s poop and deposit it in one of the many trash containers that line the bike trail. Waste Management, our trash collectors, pick up the discarded bags from the containers. This service for dog owners had been proposed for several years and follows what other cities and towns are doing to eliminate dog waste along sidewalks and trails.

NEW MARTIAL ARTS SPORTS CENTER OPENS ON MACOMB STREET They were all decked out in uniforms and performed for interested people up and down Macomb Street during Paint the Town Red. The new Island Martial Arts is leasing one half of a renovated building at 8804 Macomb and the other half will be occupied by Celena Burkhart, an attorney. T.C. Pistole heads the organization. He and his wife, who’s also teaches martial arts, moved to the Island

one year ago in June. They missed having a martial arts center as they had in Kansas City. When they moved to Michigan, T.C. works for Ford and his colleague works for GM but they operate the martial arts center when off work. Another colleague Jim Bailey will handle day time classes. Right now they have 20 students signed up to train in the Korean version of martial arts: tae kwon do,

Remember a month ago when I reminded all of us that fall is here? I’m in my office writing this on a spectacularly beautiful sunny afternoon and have been advised we can expect more days like this. Having seen the catastrophic weather events in other parts of the world, Michigan isn’t such a bad place to be, most of the time. So much happening on our little island! By Brian Loftus I saw lots of you on Macomb Street for ‘Paint the Town Red,’ I hope you enjoyed the weekend as much as I did. My favorite Downtown Development Authority director promised us a good time and she didn’t disappoint. It was a great opportunity to celebrate Grosse Ile High School Homecoming, normally an event limited to students and parents, but she made it a three day community celebration. This year Grosse Ile Rotary brought Tour de Ile to the festivities on Sunday, bringing cycling enthusiast from all over North America – thank you, considerate motorists. Angela is currently planning another ‘Ladies Night,’ I will not see you at that event but I’m sure it will be memorable. I missed the Saturday fun on Macomb on due to the Grosse Ile Firefighters’ Golf Outing (I was still having fun!). I know you will be shocked and disappointed to learn that I did not win, but when I get to spend the day on a golf course with my son and my friends AND support our Firefighters I consider it time well spent. This was another spectacular late summer day, unlike the St. James golf outing earlier that week when a monsoon type rain soaked everyone and ended after seven holes. I hope you are reading this in time to join your neighbors at the Fall Festival hosted by your Recreation Department. Centennial Farm will be the hub of activity on the 14th, plenty of outdoor fun for kids of all ages. For those also interested in a home improvement weekend, ‘Dump the Junk’ will be hosted at the DPS building on Groh Road. Now for the serious developments

- I’m sure you are all aware of the events under the control of Wayne County that will greatly affect daily life here on our island. Of immediate impact is the status of the Wayne County bridge, which might be labeled the not-so-free bridge when we learn of the extent of the necessary repairs and their costs. I remember an admonition advising “there are no free roads,” safe to say there are no ‘free bridges’ either. I do not currently have any updates from the County as to the status of the inspection report or a schedule of possible repairs, I will advise you of what I know when I know it. Attention has been diverted from the bridge issue, at least temporarily, to the disposition of the McLouth/ DSC property across the channel in Trenton. Mayor Stack explained exactly what led to her council’s decision not to buy the property and defer to Wayne County. The short version is that Trenton simply did not have over $200 million to remediate the property to usable condition. Both the City and the County agreed that Crown Enterprises had the resources to purchase, remediate and develop into productivity the 188 acre site, with guarantees (and escrow funds) to ensure the dilapidated structure will be demolished and removed within two years. How future activities on the site will affect Grosse Ile and the Toll Bridge remains to be seen, again, I will advise you of what I know when I know it. This newspaper is published once monthly, and I am continually questioned as to why we (your Township staff) cannot get information to the residents. Actually only a few complaints, but I continue to direct people to Grosse Ile Connect, the app for your smartphone. Download the app, it’s free and it works. Tell your friends to get the app! Seriously, we push out timely notices, events and activities are posted, and new emergency capabilities are being added, so get the app! With that I’ll close, see you at Fall Festival and best wishes! Best wishes to all, Brian Loftus Supervisor

Fired Up Open House

Families and their children having fun outside the Fire Department during the open house.

By Sarah Hemsworth The Fire Station opened up to the public on Oct. 1 to introduce the public to what the Fire and Rescue team do. With fun learning activities for the kids and the chance to climb inside emergency vehicles, a large group of islanders appeared of all ages. How often can a child say they sat in the driver’s seat of a fire truck on a Sunday afternoon? The station provided all sorts of emergency transportation, including fire trucks, ambulances, and fire rescue boats. Kids could get their face painted and receive snacks, along with being chased by the flame extinguishing Dalmatian. Future firefighters were formed when given the opportunity to put out a house fire. Although the flames were fake, the fire hose was not. With the help from a firefighter, children were able to hold the hose, turn it on, and extinguish fires. “I want to do this all of the time! I can’t wait to grow up and help people like these firefighters do,” said Caleb Smith age 7. A fun day to explore the life of a firefighter on a beautiful day, thanks to the Fire and Rescue team of GI.

District Four, VFW Teacher of the Year By David L. She has demonstrated an outstanding commitment in teaching Americanism and Patriotism to her students. Susan has taken the VFW’s annual essay writing contest “The Patriot’s Pen” to another level. She has turned

it into a class project for the past two years, therefore producing 92 and 90 entries into the contest. CONEY BOYS – A Unique ministry for older adult men By David L. Dyer My friend and fellow Presbyterian, Gene Swift is the founder of the Coney Boys. Gene is a retired Ford Motor Company Engineer and lives on Grosse Ile. He has been a member of our Grosse Ile Presbyterian Church for the past twenty two years. So how did it all begin? I now quote the words of Gene Swift: “Every Tuesday, Lloyd’s Bar and Grill serves delicious, Coney dogs for a buck and it became my custom to eat lunch there every week. On one such occasion in 2010, I sat reflecting upon a senior gentleman in our congregation who had recently lost his wife. My thoughts soon migrated to others like him who, for whatever reason, might be longing for male companionship. That day, I made a commitment to share my Tuesday aloneness and my love for Coneys with them. I targeted the retired men of our congregation, envisioning a group consisting of men with wives who needed time alone, men fighting boredom or depression and others who simply missed the companionship they enjoyed at their former workplace. Initially, a half dozen men responded to my Emailed invitation to gather at one o’clock, for food and fellowship. Our numbers have increased steadily ever since. In the summertime we average sixteen men and in mid-winter, when outdoor activities are limited, our numbers swell to nearly two dozen. Tables are reserved to accommodate our group and Mary Kay, our dedicated and attentive waitress knows every man by name. (she bakes cookies for all of us at

Christmas time). After paying the tab, all surplus dollars that remain are donated to a local food pantry. We annually contribute over $400. Because several Coney Boys have introduced friends from outside our congregation, I believe it is fair to say, Coney Boys is also an outreach program. The Coney Boys Grace describes the lighthearted timber of a typical gathering: “Oh Lord, we give our thanks this day, for family, food and friends… And lift our thoughts in praise to you, from whom all good descends The Coney Cronies gathered here are grateful to our God… For the gracious gift of another day, on the green side of the sod” I will close with my prayer: Thanks be to God for allowing us, to experience this hour of joy. I never thought in my wildest dreams, I’d be known as a Coney Boy. It has become a ritual, each week we get together Every Tuesday at Lloyd’s from one to two, regardless of the weather. As time goes on our numbers increase, so each week as I am able I attempt to arrive in plenty of time to sit at my favorite table. I hear three conversations on three different subjects, simultaneously taking place. It’s comradeship at it’s very best and it happens through your grace. Now we’ll munch on our dogs and sip from or drinks, and for that we give thanks to you. I’d better close this out now dear Lord, for soon that clock will strike two

Two of fall’s favorite fruits — pumpkins (yes, pumpkin is a fruit) and apples — are begging to be made into cakes, pies, muffins and more. It would be unthinkable to make an apple pie or dessert with canned apples, but pumpkin is another story, because who has time to make puree By Evelyn Cairns from scratch? Just be sure to read the label on the can so you’re not buying pie filling. Former Trenton resident Janice Grimshaw, who now lives in Tampa, shares her recipe for delectable streusel-topped muffins that feature both pumpkin and apples. She said she doesn’t peel the apples, and neither did I. JANICE’S PUMPKIN-APPLESTRUESEL MUFFINS 2 ½ cups flour 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 tablespoon pumpkin-pie spice 1 cup sugar 2 eggs, lightly beaten ½ cup cooking oil 1 cup canned pumpkin 2 cups chopped apples In a large bowl, combine flour, baking soda, pumpkin-pie spice and sugar. In a smaller bowl, combine eggs, oil and pumpkin and add to dry ingredients; stir until moistened, then stir in apples and spoon batter into greased-and-floured muffin tins, filling 2/3 full. Sprinkle streusel over batter and bake at 350 degrees for 35 to 40 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean. Struesel Topping: Combine 2 tablespoons flour, ¼ cup brown sugar and ½ teaspoon cinnamon, then cut in 4 teaspoons butter until mixture is crumbly. One of the most popular recipes I’ve enjoyed personally and offered to readers over the years as a food editor was for Mrs. Dula’s Raw-Apple Cake — and this is the perfect time to bake one. MRS. DULA’S RAW-APPLE CAKE 1 ¾ cups sugar ¾ cup cooking oil 3 eggs 2 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking soda ½ teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon cinnamon 1 teaspoon vanilla 4 or 5 apples, sliced thinly (McIntosh or Jonathan) 1 cup chopped nuts, divided ½ cup golden raisins Place sugar, oil, eggs, flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon and vanilla in a mixing bowl and beat with a wooden spoon or electric mixer until well blended. Fold in apples, ½ cup of the nuts and all of the raisins. Turn batter into a greased and floured 9x13-inch baking pan, sprinkle with remaining nuts and bake at 350 degrees about 45 minutes or until a toothpick tests clean. Delicious with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream. What could be better on a nippy fall day than a steaming-hot bowl of spicy pumpkin soup? Here’s one that took the top prize in an annual Bavarian Inn Lodge cook-off in Frankenmuth: BARBARA GOLDI’S ZESTY PUMPKIN SOUP ¼ cup butter 1 cup chopped onions 1 clove garlic, crushed 1 teaspoon curry powder ½ teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon ground coriander 1/8 teaspoon crushed red pepper 3 cups chicken broth 16-ounce can pumpkin 1 cup half and half Sour cream and chives (optional) In large saucepan, melt butter and sauté onions and garlic until soft. Add curry powder, salt, coriander and crushed pepper. Cook for 1 minute. Add broth and boil gently, uncovered, for 15 to 20 minutes. Stir in pumpkin and half and half; cook for 5 minutes. Pour into blender or food processor and blend until smooth and creamy. Reheat. Garnish with sour cream and chives if desired. Serves 4 to 6 (Do you need a special recipe? 18th ANNUAL MERIDIAN ELEMETARY SCHOOL VETERAN’S DAY CEREMONY By David L. Dyer There is a very special event coming. This is something that many of our veterans look forward to every year. This goes back to the year of 2000 when Judy Ventro, who grew up in Trenton and went through the Trenton schools as a child. Judy remembered the Veterans Day ceremonies in Trenton. She remembered her father being mentioned as a WW2 veteran. She wondered: “If they could do it in Trenton, why not on Grosse Ile?” Then, along with a colleague JoAnne Gronlund, the initial ceremony was born. The following year, 2001, came 9/11 and with the support of the entire community the students and faculty put together a very moving ceremony. This has continued every year since. Much time and effort are put into these produc-

tions and I would venture to say if they reach one more person than the previous year all of their efforts would be worth it. I get goose bumps just walking with all the veterans through that room surrounded by hundreds of children applauding our ever movement. It is heartwarming to know that these children at such a tender age are learning what Veterans Day is all about and how they must remember all those that gave their lives to the horrors of war so we may live ours in our own chosen way. So come on out Grosse Ile, you are all invited to this production that not only brings the veterans but the entire community together. It will begin at 9:00am at Meridian Elementary School Friday November 10. The VFW’s annual Veterans Day program will be at 1 PM on Veterans Day. You are all welcome.

McLouth Steel Continued from page 1 Trenton. They are currently looking at the possibility of building an automotive manufacturing and logistics centers there. Officials say 60 percent of the jobs would go to Wayne County residents. Moroun also agreed to make an effort to use Wayne County businesses and residents to perform work at the site. Wayne County Executive Warren Evans expressed in a statement the administration worked with Trenton officials to determine the best route for the site. “This is a critical property that we all want to see cleaned up and put back into productive use,” he said. Crown Enterprises officials assured the commission they would finish the project despite growing criticism that the company is allowing its properties across Detroit to languish. “No way I’m going there and not standing up to my commitments with the county,” reported Crown Enterprises president Michael Samhat “It’s impossible.” Under the deal, Crown Enterprises is required to demolish the buildings at McLouth within 24 months, or the county can file an injunction lawsuit, said Khalil Rahal, the county’s economic development director. Crown Enterprises also must invest $20 million on the property within 72 months, or pay a $1 million fine to the land bank. Moroun’s company already has put $4 million into the county’s land bank to combat rumors the company would back out of the deal, Rahal said. The money is nonrefundable. Under the agreement, Crown Enterprises have until December 15 to close on the property, county officials say.

Khalil Rahal, economic development director for the county, and Mayor Kyle Stack of Trenton both urged Wayne County commissioners Wednesday to accept the Moroun deal as the best outcome for the long-vacant site. The county commissioners, meeting as the Committee of the Whole, approved the move after extensive and often sharp debate, sending it to the full commission meeting on Thursday for final approval. Some commissioners did not want to put stock in Crown Enterprises, but they were up against a deadline. If the county did not exercise its right to remove the McLouth site from the Wayne County Treasurer’s annual auction of tax-foreclosed properties, the parcel would have likely fallen into the hands of a speculator with no guarantees of what would happen. The McLouth property is attractive because of the three international railways traversing through it, the new Gordie Howe International Bridge planned nearby and 1,600 feet of waterfront dockage with a water depth of 28 feet. Wayne County foreclosed on the McLouth Steel property in March for an estimated $3.7 million in unpaid property taxes. The state and city of Trenton both declined to purchase it at fair market value, which then left it in the hands of Wayne County. In 2006, a proposal to turn the property into a residential-commercial site called the Bay Village of Trenton failed. A proposal to renovate the site for more than $200 million and produce steel again there also failed.

I waited for him at the stroke of twelve. The Witching Hour. Midnight. The cusp of a day and its night of nights. October 31. All Hallow’s Eve. Halloween. My journey that night had begun many, many years before. Perhaps it commenced the first time I picked up a copy of “The Halloween Tree,” By Mark McPherson and on its heels, “The October Country,” both novels penned by the now late, great, and ever-to-be-celebrated author Ray Bradbury. I suppose a good deal of what I liked about Bradbury was his “Poeetical” nature; yes, as in “Poe,” Edgar Allan. That very 19th century scribe who plumbed the depths of mystery and other darkness. Who lived a short and sad life. And who died the year my house was built: 1849. Yes Poe, who inspired a young writer from Waukegan, Illinois, who would later declare himself that famous author’s “son,” by way of literary genetics. Such then is the stuff of another kind of literary family. But what I personally liked best about Ray Bradbury was not his forward-looking science fiction, such as his cautionary tale “Fahrenheit 451,” or his prescient “The Martian Chronicles.” Contrarily, I loved his leaf-dripping, autumnal celebrations of dark cellars and this scribe’s sense of a secretive series of close encounters of the darkening kind. I think the tipping point came forty years ago when I read Bradbury’s classic children-of-all-ages book “The Halloween Tree,” which at very least was a celebration of the autumn season. I was hooked. The work of this author began running through my veins. And with that I willingly joined millions of others who felt the same. But many years afterward, I found myself sitting on the edge of a dark and sadly emotional precipice in October, usually my favored season. As a consequence, I did something which was not my custom. I wrote to Mr. Bradbury, sending my Michigan musings all the ways to Los Angeles. And in my letter, fueled by a sense

of despair at the time, I did best to convey to this eminent author what precisely his words had meant for me. Also, how his sense of autumn and October and all they contained had been so clearly and mystically translated, as if to myself alone. Then lo and behold, would you believe it, I received an answer to my little tribute. It had travelled across the country in a large envelope, upon which its sender had hand-drawn an odd caricature. It was multi-stamped, including one bit of postal specie which was Poe’s face! Within the envelope there was a letter, along with two privately printed Bradbury works, each personally inscribed by their author. “Your letter was one of the kindest, sweetest, most meaningful I have ever received” Ray Bradbury wrote. “And it came at a time when it was a tonic to my life.” Just imagine. On the heels of that first letter there were many others, back and forth, at all times of year. Birthday notes, Christmas cards, special “sendings,” and of course, the Halloween-time Autumn Notes, often ending with Ray’s concluding salutation, “Mad October Love.” I also remember another seminal moment. I’d been out for a late-night walk and when I got back my wife had taped a note to the back door. Unusual. What was wrong? It said: “Ray Bradbury called you.” Dori’s message included a telephone number. My literary hero and I spoke in person that night for the first of a legion of times. Before long it became my custom, especially in autumn, to ring my famous friend at my own late hour, knowing it was earlier for him “on the coast.” We would laugh. Trade stories. I asked questions. He answered. And remembered. I recall we also both cheered one another on if and when illnesses came. Years later and toward the end of things, Ray had suffered strokes and a series of maladies. His sight was failing and he’d lost his wife but not his spirit. And on the long-distance line his familiar voice was now as weathered and burnished as the barren trees in my moonlit yard. I told him, See Love, page 26

‘Listening in on the Island’ APPLE GATHERING IS NEIGHBOR JOHN ROOS’ FORTE Neighbor John Roos has discovered apple trees on vacant land both on and off the Island. He has the equipment to gather the apples, even the high ones still up in the trees. He’ll gather bushels of apples and has shared them with the Fruccis. Not only does John have the By Pamela A. Frucci equipment to gather the apples, but also provides us with his clever apple peeler. The apple is attached to the device and you turn the crank. It both peels and cores the apples ready to bake in apple pies or make apple sauce. We’ve enjoyed John’s apple harvesting and he wanted to share his quest for apples with some youth. Teens in the Grosse Ile Presbyterian Church’s youth group will go on an outing under John’s leadership on Sat., Oct. 14. They’ll return to the kitchen at the church and hand turn the apple peeler. Then they’ll be able to take home apples for baking an apple pie or make apple sauce. ECOLOGICALLY MINDED NEIGHBOR ON HICKORY CIRCLE SWITCHES TO SOLAR There’s lots to admire about John Roos, a neighbor on Hickory Circle where we’ve lived for 45 years. John and his wife Jonni moved into their home about six years ago. Having worked for Habitat for Humanity in the building of homes, John was very muscular. This was evident when he could be seen in the woods around Grosse Ile cutting up dead trees for firewood. He heats his home entirely with chopped wood which adds up to a heating bill of only about $50 in the coldest months. I’ve seen him in the woods behind our house which backs up to Northridge Church on Meridian. He’s got huge logs on either shoulder hauling them to burn in his woodburning furnace. Now he’s expanded into providing electricity for his home

by installing solar panels on his roof. He says he’d been thinking of doing this for years and decided it was the “right thing to do.” John had met Robert Kulick, owner of Cresit Energy Company in Wyandotte when he had done installation of solar panels on some of the Habitat for Humanity homes where John was working. Robert’s been in business for 10 years. So John hired Cresit Energy to install solar panels on his roof. They’ve done four other homes on Grosse Ile, including the home of John Paul, manager of the Grosse Ile Golf & Country Club. John Paul says it’s been a “good savings.” The installation was done late this summer by Jennifer Thomas, a former student of Robert Kulick. She had taken Robert’s class at Wayne Co. Community College called Renewable & Sustainable Design and was his best student. She is now his technical designer and project manager. According to Robert, who happened to be a former student of mine at Southgate High School, Michigan has 300 days of sun and the manufacturing of the panels is all USA made. They have a warranty of 25 years and in the last ten years, the price of the panels has dropped 50%. John Roos will get a tax credit for installing solar panels and expects to earn back what he invested in the panels and control box over a period of years. He’s still convinced he did “the right thing.”

Black Cats, Broomsticks and Beer By Susan Palmer Cider mills, pumpkins, and patchwork trees; black cats, hay stacks and Halloween! Autumn is my favorite time of year. Being a cat person, I enjoy decorating with black cats and kitty witches, but how did cats get such dark reputations and become identified with this haunting holiday? Black cats have suffered from a bad reputation for centuries, but it was not always so. Different countries have differing views of le chat noire! The French have a way to find your fortune by taking a black cat to a spot where five roads meet. Let it go and follow it. The treasure finding tabby will take you to buried treasure! The Chinese have a simpler solution for lack of cash. According to an old Chinese proverb, a light colored cat will bring its owner silver; and a dark cat will bring its owner gold! One of each, please. In Japan, they have a practice of placing a black cat on the stomach of a person suffering from spasms. I have noticed with my own feline family that their warmth and vibrating rumbly purr can cure many aches and pains. Black cats in Indonesia were used to forecast and influence the weather. To make rain, a black cat must be carried around a dry field three times, and then dipped in water. This last deed need be done quickly and carefully because cats come fully armed and are not fond of water. In England, black cats are thought to bring good luck if they show up at your door and come in to stay. It certainly is good luck for the homeless kitty… In most of Europe and America during the 19th century and earlier, it was thought that a black cat could be a witch in disguise. People believed that a witch, after living 100 years, would turn into a cat, possibly as another witch’s companion. Then, in another 20 years (about 100 cat years) the cat would turn back into a witch. For centuries the two have been thought of as mysterious and wicked. But in the early 1300’s and 1400’s women were the shamans, the medicine women and were also in charge of brewing ale as well as medical tinctures.

The brewing of beer was very popular. Almost one-third of all women brewed. For a marketing technique, they would wear very tall pointy hats as to be seen and available in a crowd. The broom was a symbol of domestic trade at the time and was placed outside the door. Above the door to the ale house was the sixpointed star that declared the purity of the brew. The six points symbolized the six facets of brewing: the hops, grain, malt, yeast, water and the brewer. The beer was brewed in a large black cauldron, and, as always, the ever-present cat to protect the grain from mice and, well, they’re pretty good companions, too. One of the consequences of the Spanish Inquisition was the changing of hands from women being the healers and brewers (where the money was) to men being in charge. The women were declared witches and burned, along with their companion cats. To this day the broom, pointy hat, star, cauldron and black cats remain in the witch’s domain. Halloween is a wonderfully spooky time for us- but, unfortunately, it’s especially spooky for black cats which are often mistreated at this time of year. Please adopt a black cat and bring gold and good luck into your life as well as lots and lots of rumbly lovins’

Homecoming Continued from page 1 cars were the paired members of the homecoming court. Represent the Senior Class on the men’s side was David Cardinal, Noah Ng, Kiernan O’Connor, and Niko Van Noord. On the young women’s side was Kaitlyn Clum, Maryann Kukla, Saachi Mittal, and Gia White.

The weekend started off with the Annual Homecoming Parade, which boasted our very own GIHS Marching Band at the center of it. This year had an extra amount of spirit added, thanks to the direction of the Downtown Development Authority. Local businesses had decorated and taken a more active role in this year’s parade. Additionally Lyon’s Park was the scene of an Alumni tailgate for everyone to enjoy. The Red Devils took a victory on the football field against the Flat Rock Rams, with a final score of 20-17. During the halftime show the Homecoming King and Queen were

announced to everyone in the stands. Winning the vote for King this year was Noah Ng, and winning the vote for Queen this year was Kaitlyn Clum. On Saturday many businesses and organization came out to take part in Paint the Town Red, which saw

many residents visiting Macomb with their children. At the center of it was Lyon’s Park which served as the gathering hub for entertainment of all ages. Seeing Paint the Town Red unfold and really turn things into a community event is exactly what

our little downtown needed. The high school opened its doors in the evening to all of its students for homecoming dance, which as always was a fun time for them. Everyone saw a very safe and fun conclusion to this year’s homecoming.

The Grosse Ile Devils football team got their first win of the year on Sept.8 when they knocked off Jefferson at home by a score of 26-6. The Devils were in control the whole game and played very well on both sides of the ball. The Devils got By Alex Melhorn things going on the third drive of the game when junior quarterback Zak Thompson threw a 30-yard touchdown to wide receiver Riley Lowler. On the next drive for the Bears, they fumbled on a run play and sophomore defensive lineman Johnny Blanzy recovered. Five plays later Thompson threw a 22-yard strike to wide receiver Michael Moco for a touchdown. Once again the two point conversion failed so the Devils only led 12-0 early in the second quarter. This is Michael Moco’s first year playing varsity football so his first career touchdown sure was special. The team didn’t stop there though. On the next Jefferson drive, they fumbled once again on a running play, but this time Lowler scooped the ball up and took it all the way to the house for 60-yard GI touchdown. Just after the fumble on the last drive, Jefferson fumbled again from pressure on the quarterback by junior defensive lineman Jacob Gaudette, who also recovered the fumble. Thompson put the team on his back before halftime by throwing a 18-yard pass to Moco and a 19-yard pass to Lowler. A few plays later Thompson dumped off a pass to junior running back Phil Labelle for a 27-yard touchdown with eight seconds left in the first half. To start the second half, Jefferson had a good drive that ended with a 3-yard touchdown run by senior running back Mitchell Payment. The rest of the game the Devils punted three times to Jefferson and Jefferson punted once and turned it over on downs. The final score was Grosse Ile 26-6 Jefferson. The players were very excited about the win. Especially quarterback Zak Thompson who got nominated for the Quality Inn Monroe Quality

Performance of the Week. Thompson threw for 230 yards and three touchdowns. “This game was definitely a big step forward for us and it will give us a lot of confidence going forward. It is an honor to be nominated for the Quality Inn performance of the Week,” stated Thompson. Head coach John Bodner was very pleased with the team’s performance in the win. “The team has been working very hard on playing hard and executing throughout the week. I felt the team showed some progress in this area during the Jefferson game. Our defense created 4 turnovers which helped the offense put the ball in the endzone. We need to build from this win and continue to improve throughout the season,” stated Bodner. Grosse Ile stayed at home once again to face off against New Boston Huron at home Sept.15. GI knew the Chiefs were gonna be a tough battle but the team was confident after their home win against Jefferson the week before. The game started out great for the Devils. On the first drive quarterback Zak Thompson threw a dime to receiver Luke Harwood for a 26-yard touchdown. This fired up the team but Huron was ready as they took over the game after that.

Huron came back with a 5-yard touchdown run by Senior running back Reed Smith. That took the game into halftime with the game tied at 7-7. Grosse Ile couldn’t get much going in the second half and the Chiefs took advantage of it. Thompson threw one interception and the Devils continued to turn it over on downs. Early in the 3rd quarter Senior quarterback for the Chiefs, Brett Mckay, threw a 33-yard touchdown pass to Junior receiver Brent Wright. The Chiefs led 14-7. The score didn’t stay the same for long as Mckay threw another great pass for another 33-yard touchdown. The last scoring play of the game was in the 4th quarter when the Chiefs scored a 4-yard rushing touchdown to cap off their victory. The Devils didn’t put anymore points on the board after that first drive and the Huron Chiefs took the game and ran with it as they won by a score of 28-7. “We didn’t put together a full game and it hurt us in the end. We knew we could have played better but they are a good team,” stated Junior offensive lineman Tyler Symons. The players were disappointed in the result but they know Huron is always a tough opponent. “I thought we came out hard with

our first drive scoring a touchdown and running down the field against them. After that we just weren’t able to find our groove on offense. Huron played tough,” stated Junior running back Philip Labelle. The Devil’s hoped to stay in the hunt for Huron League title as they played Flat Rock at home the next week. The Grosse Ile Devils had another tough opponent Sept.22 when they battled the Flat Rock Rams at home. This was the biggest game of the year for the Devils because it was homecoming and a big crowd of over 1,000 people were expecting a GI win. The Devils were very motivated and ready to come out strong after a tough loss against Huron the week before. The team knew the Rams are always a good team and they expecting a tough game. The homecoming game is always one of the most exciting game of the year no matter who the opponent is. The Rams but points on the scoreboard first in the 2nd quarter with a 15-yard rushing touchdown from senior quarterback Jacob Dotson. The Rams led early in the 1st quarter 7-0. The Devils finally got on the scoreboard with a 22-yard pass from junior quarterback Zak Thompson to

Red Devils Continued from page 23 senior wide receiver Zak Thompson. That was the only offensive touchdown the Devils scored the rest of the game, but the defense carried the team. After a Grosse Ile interception by senior defensive back Austin McNeil , freshman Joey Pizzo nailed a 16-yard field goal to put the Devils up 10-7. After a good looking drive, the Devil got another interception by junior defensive back Chance Marx in the red zone. Thompson ended up throwing a interception but the Rams couldn’t do anything with the turnover and game went into halftime with a score of 10-7 the Devils up. Early in the second quarter Grosse Ile’s Chase Yops, senior defensive back, picked off Flat Rocks quarterback a took it back for a 20yard touchdown. The Devils led 17-7. Late in the 3rd quarter the Rams kicked a 14-yard field to make it a 7 point game 17-10. It was a very hard fought game for both teams and the 4th quarter decided who came on top. After a quick Devils punt, Flat Rock rushed down the field and scored a touchdown on a 11-yard rushing touchdown. The game stayed tied 17-17 until there was 1:23 left when freshman kicker Joey Pizzo nailed an 18-yard field goal which put the Devils on top with only 1:17 left in the game. “It felt great only being a freshman and helping win the game against Flat Rock and even more special it being homecoming,” stated freshman kicker Joey Pizzo. The Rams didn’t have enough time to rush down and get a field goal so the Devil came out on top by a score

of 20-17. This was a huge win for the Devils and they gave the fans and students want they wanted, a Red Devils victory! “It was a lot of fun and rewarding after a long week of practice, having to push away all activities involving homecoming. It took a lot to stay focused on the game and it wasn’t easy, but we came out with a win,” stated senior center Collin Bammer. After an outstanding win against Flat Rock, the Devils looked to get another win against SMCC the next week. Grosse Ile played St. Mary’s Catholic Central next Sept.29 as the Devils are trying to keep their playoff hopes alive. This time, Grosse Ile was visiting St. Mary’s at their homecoming so there was a lot of pressure on both teams.

The big battle of the night was between linebackers Johnny Blanzy and Sam Cousino. Both sophomores, Blanzy on GI and Cousino for the falcons. The two of them are some of the best players in the Huron League. The Devils started out with the ball first but had a quick turnover on downs and SMCC took advantage of it. Senior running back Collin Woolford took the ball to the house for a 55yard touchdown run for the Falcons. They led early in the 1st quarter 7-0 after freshman kicker Joey Pizzo’s extra point. After another quick punt for the Devils, they caught a break when SMCC fumbled and senior defensive lineman Kenny Marx scooped it up and took it all the way for a 46-yard touchdown. The game was tied 7-7 in the 1st quarter still.

Unfortunately for the Devil’s, they couldn’t get anything going on offense the rest of the game. After the GI touchdown senior quarterback Josh Blanchett ran the ball for a 15-yard touchdown which brought the Falcons back on top 13-7 after the missed extra point attempt. With a minute to go in the half, Woolford got another touchdown with a 7-yard run which extended the Falcons lead to 20-7. The extra point was good by sophomore kicker Wyatt Bergmoser. The rest of the game neither team could get anything going on offense and the game ended with a score of 20-7 in favor of SMCC. The team couldn’t get anything going in the 2nd half as they turned the ball over on almost every drive on offense. The defense did their job for the most part but it was the offense that struggled this time for the Devil’s. “I don’t believe that they were that tough, I feel like it was our execution on offense, that’s what killed us. Our defense is tough and always giving us great opportunities but it’s hard when they’re on the field for 8 minutes at a time, and we get quick 3 and outs on offense. You can’t win games like that,” stated junior wide receiver Drew Ramirez. The Devil’s couldn’t spoil SMCC’s homecoming in a hard fought game the whole way through. “Our defense did their job and kept getting off the field enough, it was just our offense that couldn’t punch the ball in. They were a solid team but our offense just has to execute better,” stated junior quarterback Zak Thompson. The Devil’s look to rebound the next week on Sept.6 against Milan at home.

Love See Love, page 26 I recall, re-reading about one of his favorite Waukegan boyhood haunts, a ravine at the edge of his home town. I saw him smiling as he haltingly regaled me with its secrets. “I’d like to see that ravine one of these days” I said. “Maybe we can meet there sometime.” And I think, being Bradbury, he knew what I meant. Then I went on to describe the midwestern harvest moon and the stars, and the crisp-leafed wood out back I used to cross on my late-night forays. Five years my friend “the Mayor of October Town” (my nickname for and to him) finally moved on to join his dearest beloveds. I was saddened, but glad for his crossing. And I often smiled, a tear in eye, whenever I saw the photograph on my library wall of the great man, inscribed “TO MARK, MY SPECIAL SON.” And you know what that meant. Now I had joined the fraternity of that most peculiar of families. Ray passed away before All Hallows, 2012. But I vowed to myself that when midnight struck, banishing October 30,

I would attempt to meet my old friend to say good-bye. So as twelve struck, I was standing near a towering old tree near our island’s playing field which I’d longago christened “Eddie” (for Edgar Allan). And I waited. Wishing I were standing instead in that Waukegan ravine where we had once agreed to meet. Would Ray mind the change of venue, I wondered? And did I meet my old friend—on that auspiciously magical evening? I will not lie and say I did not. Suffice it to say here, I felt our kinship renewed. Mission accomplished, for now at least. And like the dozens of other earlier times, I stared upwards to the skies burning with harvest stars, and took note of the golden leaves on the walkway leading me home. When I reached my back porch, as I approached its door I envisioned a note taped to the storm. Ghostly now, I knew what it said. And for that I was glad. Yes, so very honored and glad. So this one’s for you, Ray, if you’re listening. Happy Halloween and Mad October Love.

Miss Michigan Teen USA know I had won, I couldn’t hear the announcer say my name so I clapped for the runner up. Once they placed the crown on my head I began to cry. I thought of my mom and dad in the crowd, I was so excited to share this moment with them.” Over the course of the event there were three showcases: the introduction, where the girls wore a white top and white pants with red accessories. The introduction was for the crowd and judges to meet the contestants. Next came activewear. And finally, ball gowns, where Anane choose a beautiful black embellished dress. “I believe that I was chosen for my honesty during the interview with the judges. I talked about my journey to America and about myself, and I think they believed I could inspire other girls,” said Loveday. Now that the crowning ceremony is complete, Loveday will prepare for nationals over the course of a year. Congratulations and good luck in your future successes.

Anane Loveday was crowned Miss Michigan Teen USA 2018 on Saturday Sept. 30 at McMorran Theatre in Port Huron. The 16 year old is a junior at Grosse Ile High School and for her first time in a pageant, she has won an important title. Loveday is new to the modeling world and entered the pageant for the scholarship opportunities and for a new adventure. The stunning young lady was encouraged by family and friends to begin modeling and pageantry and entered the Miss Michigan Teen USA as a beginner. When her application was picked for the event, Loveday quickly jumped to youtube to watch videos and learn. Her parents and sisters asked her questions to prepare her for things the judges may inquire during the competition. “At first I was intimidated by the other girls. Some of them have been doing pageants for many years. There were girls who came in second place in previous years and were there again,” said Loveday, “I didn’t

YOUR BETTER HEALTH

Is Your Gut Trying To Telling You Something? Heartburn, acid reflux, GERD (gastro-esophageal reflex disorder), indigestion, diarrhea, bloating, constipation, IBS (irritable bowel syndrome), do any of these sound familiar? To many of us they should, because it’s estimated that 70,000,000 people suffer from one or more of these By Dr. Michael Concessi, conditions every a Grosse Ile resident single day. So, how do you spell relief ? Most spell it ROLAIDS®! Others say Tums®, Zantac®, Tagament®, or PPI (protein pump inhibitors) such as Prilosec®, Prevacid®, or Nexium® to name a few. These pharmaceuticals are made to be taken for short durations, but most of the people I talk to have been taking them for 5, 10 even 20 plus years. Let’s not forget about all the side effects and dangers of these drugs, but that would take the rest of this article and then some! Okay, so you are experiencing some heartburn or acid reflux, what’s the big deal? Well, beside the dangers of the medications you are taking, you are damaging your gut or digestive system, which is essential to your health. The fact is your gut is closely linked to your immune system. Research has shown that upwards of 70-80% of the immune system is located in your gut. A man a few years before this research came out was quoted as saying “All disease begins in the gut”. Well I may not be able to say at this time that ALL disease begins in the gut, only time will tell, but with 70-80% of our immune system beginning in the gut, I think that man was onto something. Michael Snyder, PhD and director of Stanford University’s Center for Genomics and Personalized Medicine stated “There’s a good chance your microbiome is associated with every disease you can think of -- diabetes, cancer, autism,”. Researchers have also discovered links between intestinal flora (bacteria) and certain mental health disorders including

ADD, anxiety, Alzheimer’s disease, and depression, among others. This linkage has been referred to as the gut-brain connection. The bacteria in your gut has the ability to actually communicate messages to the brain via the nervous system, hormones, and the immune system. The root of many health problems are related to Dysbiosis, an imbalance or damaged intestinal bacteria. Dysbiosis has been also been linked to illnesses such as diabetes, Rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn’s disease, chronic inflammation, ulcerative colitis, colon cancer, and obesity. Over medicating, especially the chronic use of antibiotics, kill off beneficial bacteria as well as the bad ones. Over time the invading microbes and bad bacteria become resistant. Antimicrobial drugs, antifungal drugs, painkillers like aspirin and ibuprofen damage the gut. Steroids, birth control pills, sleeping pills, acid absorbers and acid stoppers further disruption to the gut bacteria, resulting in Dysbiosis and a compromised immune system. The Standard American Diet (SDA), made up of highly processed foods, high sugar, high fat, high carbohydrates and low fiber, further compound our gut problems. Add that to an aging body, which begin to produce less stomach acids and digestive enzymes to breakdown fats, proteins and carbohydrates, and you have the perfect storm resulting in heartburn, acid reflux, and GERD. OUCH! Remember the quote “All disease begins in the gut”. That man was Hippocrates, also known as the Father of Western Medicine and he said that over 2,300 years ago. It looks like science is finally catching up to what was already understood over 2,300 years ago that good health begins in the gut. In the next edition, I will continue to cover the digestive system and how to aide and repair it naturally. To contact me, please email me at dr.concessi@gi-grandnews.com

Shop Local, Think Local, BE Local Small is Better, Big is Horrible for All In this column, I have tried to express my concerns in different ways. I am continuously amazed to hear people say “Huh, I never thought of that”, so I say it differently, hoping to see that flicker that might mean an “Aha” moment. Motivating! My dissertations are seen by some as self serving. While I agree that what I write about does apply to my businesses, my focus is the By Peter Rose business structure of America, as it is played out in regions everywhere, and yes, including downriver. I’m one of the very few that chooses to call it out as untenable, these trends in the USA. Most people don’t connect the dots in the first place, and most others don’t care to pontificate like this. Then, too, most are not given this opportunity to communicate. Thank you to the Grosse Ile Grand, I am grateful for it! Magina Books on Fort St. in Lincoln Park just closed, because Steve Magina died. As far as I know, decisions have not yet been made on the fate of the store. My father is very sad, because A., he liked Steve, and B., he doesn’t WANT to buy books from Barnes and Noble or on line. He loves the feeling that only a bookstore can provide. The smell, the knowledge of the proprietor, the satisfaction and the shared experience of a book….all elements that cannot be recreated anywhere else but an independent book store. Now, downriver, we have lost that option, we can’t get it locally even if we want to. RIP, Steve Magina. We hope for continuity. Last week, the John Oliver show’s main feature was Business Consolidation. Despite the near universality of utterances from both party’s leadership that “small business is the backbone of the American economy”, virtually ALL the cards are stacked for big business, and anti-trust laws controlling that consolidation are simply ignored. It’s not political; it’s systemic. Big has resources small doesn’t, mainly the

ear of those that enable big becoming bigger. The episode calls out industries that are not my bailiwick. There were 10 large airlines in 2000, now 4, controlling 83% of the market. Think it’s coincidence that 4 big companies have, in the last 9 years, gone from collecting $543 million in baggage fees to $4.2 billion? 90% of the Rental Car business is controlled by 3. 70% of the beer market is controlled by 2. It is not just MY industry that deals with forces and trends like this. But the City of Detroit is wooing Amazon to locate their second headquarters here. There is a nationwide bidding war for this brazen sham, with cities and states pledging tax relief and all manner of other tax incentives to “win” this lottery. There is overwhelming and giddy support for this, by the way, from the public that clearly loves Amazon and everything they promise, which is, as you know, to become “the everything store”, meaning you can’t get it anywhere else. Amazon is the picture of efficiency, meaning that their growth equates to fewer jobs, and the majority cheer it all on, seemingly oblivious to the diminishment of the work force in genre after genre. For every job at Amazon, there will be 3 to 5 fewer jobs elsewhere. So I confess to discouragement that this momentum, which could be thwarted by the enforcement of laws, is NOT, because the people that will have a harder time finding work, are raving fans, cheering on the destruction of choice and jobs that create demand for the products that will only be available at Amazon. Cheering fans are voters, after all. This is insanity. Indie stores are far from defeated. Those that survived the closure wave of the 1990s and 2000s and that are still here have a great deal of determination. Everyone I know in my industry still loves what they do, still gets a charge out of making someone happy with their purchase. We love the job, we still think it’s fun, no matter how hard. Better than any internet site or national chain,

by Gail Albin I would not be a writer if someone had not instructed me on computer use about 15 years ago. I truly wanted the knowledge, but didn’t want to bother myself with the work. For one thing, I need spellcheck. I need to look up facts to provide better accuracy. There is word count and it is very easy to go back and change some words, punctuation marks and swap out paragraphs for a better read. I am very blessed to have help living nearby including a teen granddaughter. Years ago, on a road trip, we were near Hershey, PA. There was a cocoa /chocolate colored hedge high up on a natural ridge near the highway. It was trimmed to read, EACH ONE

TEACH ONE. I love it! Hey tech whiz kids, teach your local elders how to use the computer. Be kind, be patient & have a smile on your face. In exchange, elders have information to share from their experiences of learning things sometimes the hard way. Many could advise them on how to make their money go farther. Elders may be more concerned about safety issues. Each generation has value and probably some regrets. Older people hopefully have wisdom that came through life experiences. Young people do not seem to fear electronics or technology. Help one another, you don’t have to be family to be relative.

Shop Local Continued from page 30 we share enthusiasm for products, explaining value & performance. We try really hard to provide an indispensable service to the people we try to know by name. So, look, that’s what we’re going to keep doing. While I do take the time to write about forces that are having a highly destructive impact on the health of the US economy, I reserve the vast majority of MY energy for the sheer will that is required to keep OUR employees employed; to be here, still, legs churning. As do all the owners and operators of independent businesses. It’s routine

to be passionate and determined, It’s a prerequisite. I’m not so unique, except that I DO know stuff and think it’s my job to tell you what I know. Yes, I KNOW, I complain a lot about the topic. It’s my job to protect more than just my own business, though. Mark my words, as Amazon grows, there will be closures everywhere. Less choice, fewer jobs (remember that FEWER JOBS). So I’ll keep yakking, for your sake. Mine, too. To contact me, please email me at Peter@GI-GrandNews.com
