A Wonderful Island Glow

A

s the sun set on Dec 1, the families on Grosse Ile hoped in their cars and began headed towards the corner commons on Macomb Street. Music was played under the gazebo while people had the chance to chatter with friends and mingle with strangers, all while holding a warm cup of hot cocoa or coffee. Down the street, only a minute walk, the bike museum was open for all to observe. The warm, inviting entrance was decorated and lit, and once inside a marvelous collection of bikes as early as the 1800’s filled the space. At seven o’clock, when the crowd slowly simmered down, a special guest arrived. By Sarah Hemsworth Red and white flashing lights shown through the air, as the Grosse Ile Fire Department delivered a lively gift to the good little boys and girls on Macomb Street. Santa Claus hopped off the fire truck and made his way to the commons. Once at the corner, Santa introduced himself to his fans, shaking hands and taking cheerful photos. Underneath the gazebo, Santa was handed the key to the city, and joyfully, continued saying his hellos before marching down to the Christmas Tree. How You Can Win A Magical Night By Cameron Colwell One of the best things that comes out of the holidays each year is the way you see communities come together, and our township is no exception. Seeing friends come home for the holidays, or all of your neighbors talking amongst each other at the events hosted on Macomb Street. You can really feel the pulse of our Downtown, and how great the community is. And it’s important that our local businesses get the kind of exposure that the holidays bring. The increase in traffic our “Mainstreet” sees each year is something any business owner would look forward to. Even better than that is when the car parks and those people walk through their door. This leads to the question of how do local business owners, your neighbors, generate even more foot traffic; and how do See MAGICAL on page 21

TELESCOPING THE TOWNSHIP GINLC’ S KEYNOTE SPEAKER IS DR. KAY MCGOWAN The keynote speaker at the G.I. Nature & Land Conservancy’s annual meeting on Sat., Nov. 4 at the G.I. Golf & Country Club, which attracted almost 100 attendees, was Dr. Kay McGowan. A professor of anthropology at Eastern MI University, Dr. McGowan based her talk on the wide use of birds and By Pamela A. Frucci their feathers in the Native American culture. Her heritage is Choctaw and Cherokee and she shared with her listeners information re: other aspects of the Indian culture, such as; they had no jails as punishment for crimes--the culprit was just sent away. Native Americans didn’t own land, and beavers in this area were trapped and their skins used to wrap the deceased; and that birds represented freedom and produced music in their bird calls. She also shared that names of Lake Erie and Wyandotte are taken from Indian tribes as well as the northern city of Petoskey, which is not a Polish name, but named for an Indian chief. She reminded the crowd that Chief Tecumseh, who signed the treaty between the Macomb brothers and the Potawatomi Indians, was the nephew of Chief Pontiac. Several area Boy Scouts were present displaying their Eagle Scout projects under the guidance of the GINLC; also on display were boards of the GINLC’s active programs.

He’ll have musical accompaniment by talented pianists Bobby Ragoonanan, St. James’ music director, and Doug Scott, G.I. Presbyterian Church’s pianist/organist. There’s no charge for the performance, but a goodwill offering will be donated to T.A.I.L.S., the

animal shelter at Centennial Farm. BRAGG GIFTS, BRAND NEW BUSINESS ON MACOMB STREET The quaint home on the eastern end of Macomb has been renovated and converted into a gift shop worth a stop, by looking for the right gift set for a baby’s first Christmas, a shower, a wedding, an anniversary, for kids of all ages, or to cheer up someone who’s ill. The clever name, Bragg Gifts, was the brain child of owner Mary Holcolm, who told me she woke up from a dream with the name, based on the pride she has in her two daughters, Faith and Hope. Although she lives off-Island, she wanted her shop to have that “home town” flavor. It fits right in with two out-of-town visitors who stopped me on the street; and wondered if they were on Macomb Street, since they had heard that it was a “quaint” place to shop. Look on Facebook for Bragg Gifts. They’re open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 11 a. m. to 6 p.m. on Friday. Opening date was for the Halloween parade

down Macomb Street, and they were open for Ladies Night Out. Mary’s sisters are also in on the venture and work as sales clerks. THERE’S PAYBACK ON PAPER COLLECTED BY SCHOOLS If you’re a resident who saves recyclable paper and deposits it in the large containers on our school’s’ grounds, you might be interested in knowing our township schools get a check from Royal Oak Recycling, which empties the containers. According to the finance director at our schools, they have not had a check from the company for some time. It took a phone call and the schools were promised a check for $50 for the paper deposited at the high school and Meridian School. When the other bins are emptied, they’ll be receiving a check regularly in the future. The money is deposited in the general funds. CUBA NOT JUST A DESTINATION FOR TOURISTS Funded by the G. I. 40TH ANNIVERSARY OF GREAT AMERICAN SMOKE OUT There once were no limits on where smokers could light up. A major effort to get smokers to quit was instigated 40 years ago, called the Great American Smoke Out, designated on the third Thursday of November by the American Cancer Society. Its 40th anniversary was Nov. 16. I was a new township board member back in 1980 and introduced a resolution that there would be no smoking at board meetings if there were non-smokers in the room. It was defeated 4-3 since one past-smoker on the board stated: “I know how tough it is to not smoke at meetings.” Back then several board members, including the supervisor and attorney, smoked at board meetings. In 1984, I introduced the resolution again and it failed for lack of a second. One board member was quoted in the Ile Camera: “I resent being dictated to... I thought this was a free country.” Then in 1986, when the Clean Indoor Air Act was going into effect in 1987, I introduced the resolution again. This time it passed 4-3! RESIDENTS SUPPORT POLICE MILLAGE RENEWAL Voters last Nov. 7 voted favorably for the police millage 563 to 255, which shows residents appreciate the safe community status of our police department. NAVAL HISTORY RECOGNIZED BY NEW SIGN AT AIRPORT Mounted in November at the entrance to Groh Road off Meridian is a brand new sign noting that the municipal airport was once a Naval Air Station. Look for a saluting Naval officer, the dates 1927-1969 and the words: “Through these portals pass the world’s finest aviators.” The sign was financed by the airport’s Memorial Committee.

Grosse Ile Native Returns Home to Join Police Force Coming this December the Grosse Ile Police Department will be replenishing their ranks with one new officer. Officer Raymond Bodrie will be joining GIPD starting December 19, which was officially passed by the Township Board at their regular meeting on Monday, November 27. Trustee James Nelson expressed that out of all the candidates who applied it was a difficult decision between the last three. However, the decision was unanimous and they are confident Raymond will have a long lasting and positive career here. Chief of Police Joe Porcarelli made note of Bodrie’s extremely high test results from the psych evaluation portion of the application. Raymond is a lifelong island resident who graduated from Grosse Ile High School in 2013. Growing up he worked for the Grosse Ile DPW multiple summers. Among many things he played an active role in clubs that emphasized leadership such as STAND, as well as the varsity rowing program. Raymond was also celebrated as Homecoming King the fall of his senior year. He was motivated early on to pursue a career in law enforcement due to his desire to help not only the people he knew, but everyone in his community. After realizing this desire Raymond decided that becoming a police officer was the most hands on and direct way he could positively impact his community. Bodrie attended Central Michigan University for the majority of his undergrad. There he pursued a

bachelor of science in Sociology with a focus in criminal justice, as well as a minor in leadership. On top of doing well in the classroom, he got as much hands on experience as possible through multiple methods. One method was a prison program called Inside Out. There he would run talks on societal issues inside of a prison once a week. Raymond also did an internship with an office of community corrections. There he monitored bond conditions set in Gratiot County. After graduating from CMU in May, he was accepted into the Schoolcraft Police Academy program. Raymond mentioned that the academy had taught him countless lessons, but he took away two good intentions he finds the most important. 1. To always act with a pure heart 2. That with every action to keep in mind the people that love me. I owe it to them to everything I can to come home safe every night. He is also a Volunteer Assistant Coach with the Grosse Ile High School Rowing team, and looks forward to being able to dedicate more time coaching youth now that he is home. Bodrie is most excited about working with community we have here in Grosse Ile. He referenced how much people care and look out for each other on the island, and how lucky it is to be a part of that. Officer Bodrie is a very welcomed addition to our police force, and we are lucky to have such dedicated men and women protecting our township.

FROM THE SUPERVISOR

Ready for Winter Yes, the ”W” word - Winter. I’m not sure why some of us treat Winter like it’s some kind of plague – it comes every year, right around this time. Days are shorter, roads get messy, and the temperatures are noticeably colder. Deal with it, or, as some of us prefer, embrace it! Our recreation department, Kim By Brian Loftus and her staff, have lots of indoor and outdoor activities planned to keep us all active for the next few months; so open your copy of Channels and get busy! You will also find the latest opportunities on our app – grosseileconnect. I repeat – perhaps all too often – that some parts of my job are better than others; but Island Glow is always the best! Last Friday night’s gathering was wonderful: bright moon, almost balmy weather, and lots of families with lots of kids. So much excitement, so much commotion, so many smiling faces all gathered at the Commons waiting for Santa and the parade to the tree lighting. Kim, our Rec Director, Chad, our Festival Chairman, and Angela, our DDA Director, somehow conspired to arrange the best Island Glow I can remember – Macomb Street was a happening place. I truly enjoyed the evening – I got to show off my grandson, had the chance to catch up with friends I hadn’t seen for too long, even answered a few questions. To all who participated – well done! The Historical Society’s Christmas Boutique continues; and is a great place to find unique, locally made items. With that as an opener, one of my DDA members not-so-tactfully reminded me that there are several Island shops offering unique items, including hers. Therefore, I contritely amend my Supervisor’s Shopping Tip – Boutique or Macomb Street – if they don’t have it, you don’t need it. Lots of other activities wrapping up on this very busy weekend. The St. James greens market was packed all Saturday morning, and apparently they will need a bigger parking lot next year. Grosse Ile’s school bus drivers teamed with the Firefighters

Goodfellows for their annual ‘Stuff the Bus’ giving event. (Yes, that’s why the school bus was parked at the Public Safety building) All items donated go to Grosse Ile families who might need a little assistance getting through the holiday season. Thank you to all who contributed and whose efforts made this happen. Goodfellows will continue to accept cash donations for the next several weeks, I’ll ask Chief Murdock to push out all the information you need. Stick with me for the updates on the less exciting parts of my job. First, I need to correct a slightly misleading article in a previous edition of this newspaper. Your Township Board has no intention, nor does it have the authority, to levy a property tax for road repairs. We are completing an Intergovernmental Agreement with Wayne County to make some repairs to West River Road when we replace that section of an aging water main – I wish we could do more. As many of us received our annual Christmas card from Treasurer Van Os, otherwise known as your winter property tax, take the time to read and understand where your dollars go. Only about one – third are Township expenses, and our entire staff works hard to ensure you are getting the maximum value for those dollars. Inspections continue on the not-so-free Wayne County bridge; I contacted County DPS, but they had no updates for me. So far the inspections are scheduled through March. I’ll advise of developments as they occur. Mayor Stack confirmed that the sale of the McLouth/ DSC property continues, obviously a very involved process with inputs and directives from numerous government agencies. Closer to home, we plan to add a new police officer this month. We have some new police cars with a more appealing (my opinion) logo, and a new state-of–the–art ambulance in the livery – all to maintain the best Public Safety team anywhere! Running out of room, so I’ll close with another of my favorite quips – if you’re lucky enough to live on Grosse Ile, you’re lucky enough! Best wishes and I’ll write again in 2018.

For Car Wash & Detailing CHRISTMAS PACKAGES FOR OUR DEPLOYED TROOPS By David L. Dyer My friend and neighbor, Melanie Bolthouse, a Navy Mom, has been involved in sending cards, letters and care packages to our deployed troops for the past couple of years. At our September VFW meeting she was present seeking signatures on cards for the troops. Susan Dusute was also at the meeting being honored as VFW middle school teacher of the year. Melanie brought in a sample of a box filled with items to be sent. Items that are always needed include: personal hygiene items, disposable razors, chap sticks, mouthwash, deodorant, foot powder and the like. In addition sun screen, magazines, AA batteries, movies and music on

thumb drives, and cards and letters and group photos. We want them to see the real people that are doing this for them. Susan asked Melanie if her students could assist in sending items to the troops. She thought it would be a great program for the Student Council and the Builders Club.Mrs Pam Rieger and Mrs Katie Sirhal played major roles in implementing this community service project. The students began collecting items from home, family, friends and neighbors. Soon a total of thirty-six boxes were filled, sealed, and ready for transport. They will be forwarded in time for Christmas.

A CHRISTMAS STORY

By David Dyer I wrote this story four years ago and would love to share it. It begins with a story I received on the internet. There were a couple of versions of it so this will not be verbatim. I’ll use my own words in telling the same story. An eight year old boy named Spencer was in By David L. Dyer this shopping mall with his aunt Becky. Soon they came upon a huge line of young kids and adults. The line seemed to get longer as the minutes passed. Spencer asked his aunt “why are so many people in that long line?” Becky told him they were all lined up to see Santa Claus. She went on to say: “the first sight of Santa Claus means that Christmas will soon be here.” Spencer had been going to Sunday School as long as he could remember. He had a rather puzzled look on his face as he asked Aunt Becky “Didn’t Jesus give his life for us and isn’t Christmas Day his birthday?” When Becky answered in the affirmative, Spencer asked “If that is the line to see Santa Claus, where is the line to see Jesus?” That created an immediate welling that quickly turned to real tears as Becky wondered if that question had ever been asked before. When they returned home, Becky, a very lovely and aspiring vocalist told her father what Spencer had asked. They put words together and soon a beautiful new Christmas song was born. It featured Becky singing the words to “Where’s the Line to See Jesus?” You can hear it by going to this site: wheresthelinetoseejesus.com A few days later our entire country was introduced to a small town in Connecticut called Newtown. We all know of the tragedy that struck that town. Believe me I have as much empathy as everyone else. When I was asked of my thoughts I said it has all been written. There was nothing more I could offer as to who and what was to blame or how to prevent it from happening again. Since I began writing some four years ago I have come to believe that no matter how bleak the situation, something positive will come from it. You may have to look very deeply

for it, but eventually it will appear. This time I didn’t have to look for it. It stared me in the face as I attempted to enter an elementary classroom four days before Christmas. My wife, Janet had asked me to be Santa Claus to her preschool class of four year olds. She also asked me to do the same for another teacher’s three and four year olds. There would be a total of about forty kids. Even though I had now preferred Jesus over Santa Claus I responded by saying “What an honor it is to be asked and of course I will do so.” The other teacher, Jessica had a Santa suit for me which fit perfectly. The plan was for me to enter the classroom with a large bag filled with gifts and I would call the name of each child and present them with their gift. When that Friday arrived I gazed at the calendar. Not only was it December 21st, it was the first day of winter. I didn’t need a calendar to be reminded of that as I opened the front door and saw that we had been treated to not only four inches of snow but bitter cold temperatures and a 20 MPH biting wind. It was our first so called snow fall of the season. We managed to get Janet out of the driveway early enough to drive those fifteen miles to school and arrive by 8:30. I didn’t have to be there until 10 AM. My son, David-Scott, home for Christmas from Chicago drove me to the school. It took all of forty five minutes to cover those fifteen miles. When we arrived we got out of the car and into that cold biting wind and walked to the door to enter the school. It was then and there I realized the positive from that Newtown tragedy. That would be the heightened security of all the schools across the country. We pressed the buzzer several times to no avail. If you didn’t have an appointment to arrive at a certain time, you would not enter that school while it was in session. It took about ten minutes to make contact with Janet by cell phone. I went directly to the supply room and changed into the Santa suit. My pack was full of gifts. I entered the classroom with bells ringing and shouting HO-HO-HO and was seated in front of the room facing the children. I reached into my pack and See CHRISTMAS, page 26

2017 Jammie Drive By Pamela A. Frucci The Jammie Drive has grown to more than 300 pajama-toting women having lunch at the Grosse Ile Golf and Country Club to connect before Christmas and bring warmth to thousands of children across metro Detroit. This generous group of ladies has donated more than 3,000 pairs of pjs to needy children over the last eight years and are hoping to break the 1,000 pair gathered last year. According to co-chairs and sisters-in-law, Suzy Williams and Wendy Moco, last year’s luncheon erupted with the announcement that the ladies, assisted by Grosse Ile Township Schools, Grosse Ile Jazzercise, APAC Paper and Daybreak Salon & Spa, gathered — get ready for this — 1,175 pairs of pajamas for children, more than doubling their 2016 goal of 500 pair. The group has set their sites on 1,000 pairs of pajamas for 2017 and with 300 reservations for the midday luncheon, it seems like a real possibility. What began as a way to connect with girlfriends during the busy holidays and inspired by the tradition of new pajamas for Christmas morning has surprised even Williams and Moco. “This sweet, simple idea has blossomed into something incredible to serve an unmet need of children in our area,” says Williams “We are completely blown away by this generous response. Imagine,1,000 children will sleep better this winter. That’s the magic of Christmas,” Several agencies attended the event and received their jammies to begin distribution in time for Christmas morning. Terry Morreau, Director of Christian Service for Sacred Heart Parish Grosse Ile, is overwhelmed at the response. “When it comes to children, our hearts want the best for their comfort and warmth.” Morreau and the Knights of Columbus will be distributing over 1,0000 of the pajamas to agencies and churches serving children in crisis throughout downriver, Detroit and Washtenaw County, including: J First Step Domestic Violence Shelter J Mimi’s Mission J Penrickton Center for Blind Children

This sweet, simple idea has blossomed into something incredible to serve an unmet need of children in our area. J Sacred Heart Food Pantry J The Magic of Christmas Foundation J St. Gabe’s, St. Leo’s Shelters

They beat their mark— on 11/30/17, this group of generous women raised 1193 pajamas for needy children this Christmas. Moco and Williams were overwhelmed upon returning home to more jammies on their front porches, pushing the total to 1,200. Then came a Facebook message from the ER nurses at Henry Ford Hospital Brownstown, who had collected jammies since early November when Dory Trolley, Suzy’s mother had alerted the staff to the Jammie Drive. In the true spirit of Christmas, jammies continue to trickle in and will be distributed to needy children in time for Christmas morning and the winter months, raising the bar on next year’s goal for a perennial need.

COUNTDOWN CONTINUED from page 1 Following Santa’s lead, the crowd swept down Macomb street toward Perdino’s restaurant, the location of the annual tree lighting ceremony. Everyone gathered around the enormous Pine tree and waited for it to glow anxiously. Supervisor Brian Loftus along with a handful of others began the countdown to the lighting. At the sound of one, the tree gleamed for all to see. From top to bottom, the tree shined with beautiful and traditional

white lights. Children sat at the trunk of the tree, looking up with smiles on their faces, dancing when the lights turned on as if it were Christmas morning. “I had the most magical time! Watching the dark sky light up from the tree was amazing, it brought in the feel of December wonderfully,” said Katherine Bradshaw. The tree lighting ceremony takes place on the first day of December every year in hopes to celebrate the joyful times to come. Spontaneous singing voices filled the

WILL BETTER ROADS ON GROSSE ILE BE IN OUR FUTURE? By Pamela A. Frucci Often when I drive down roads on Grosse Ile, I think about the old days when roads were no better than logs laid down and were referred to as “corduroy” roads. There’s a future millage being considered by the Department of Public Services Commission, headed by Bill Costick. He laments that a previous millage election to redo our roads was defeated by 286 votes; but he’s much more confident that this time it was pass. In 2015 voters were asked to pass an $18,800,000 bond issue, but it included water main replacement. The commission has handled the financing of the water main project. In 2018 they’ll be asking for less money from taxpayers. But the most convincing argument Bill Costick gives is that Wayne County Roads has set aside money in 2018 to repair many roads in the county, but Grosse Ile is not on the list. In other words, we have to fund our own road repair and resurfacing, if we want it done. Slated for repairs are a main section of Meridian Road, three portions of East River, a section of West River and South Pointe and several roads west of Meridian: Horsemill, Church, Ferry, and Bellevue. Residents had a chance at two public hearings at the township hall to learn about the proposed repair. The commission will decide on the amount to be asked for on a ballot in 2018. This time the millage will only be for roads, set at an amount voters should support, so we can ride on smoother than corduroy roads.

Karen Ranka of Parke Lane, who is well known to Islanders for entertaining with elegance, shares an old recipe for a de- luscious dinner salad she serves at holiday dinners and on special occasions. Not only is it delicious (I made and loved it), but it looks beautiful By Evelyn Cairns when cut into serving portions and presented on fine china or glass salad plates, Karen says. KAREN’S CHERRY SALAD SUPREME 3-ounce package raspberry gelatin 1 cup boiling water 21-ounce can cherry pie filling 3-ounce package lemon gelatin 1 cup boiling water 3 ounces Philadelphia cream cheese 1/3 cup mayonnaise 8-ounce can crushed pineapple, undrained ½ cup whipping cream 1 cup tiny marshmallows 2 tablespoons chopped nuts

Dissolve raspberry gelatin in 1 cup boiling water; stir in pie filling. Turn into 9x9x2-inch baking dish and chill until partially set. Dissolve lemon gelatin in 1 cup boiling water and cool slightly. Beat together cream cheese and mayonnaise. Gradually add lemon gelatin and stir in pineapple. Whip whipping cream and fold into lemon mixture with marshmallows. Spread over cherry layer and top with nuts. Chill until set and cut into serving portions. Shares again Former Trenton resident Janice Grimshaw of Tampa, Fla., who shared her wonderful recipe for pumpkin streusel muffins in October, offers another delectable recipe, which received kudos when I provided samples for neighbors and friends: JANICE’S CRANBERRY PECAN BARS Crust: 1 cup flour 2 tablespoons sugar 1/3 cup butter ½ cup chopped pecans Combine flour and sugar, Cut in

butter until mixture forms coarse crumbs. Stir in pecans and press mixture into ungreased 13x9x2-inch baking pan. Bake at 350 degrees 15 minutes. (Reduce 25 degrees if using glass baking dish.) Meanwhile prepare Topping: 1¼ cups sugar 2 tablespoons flour 2 beaten eggs 2 tablespoons milk 1 tablespoon finely shredded orange peel 1 teaspoon vanilla 1 cup chopped cranberries ½ cup shredded coconut ½ cup chopped pecans Combine sugar, flour, eggs, milk, peel and vanilla. Fold in cranberries, coconut and pecans. Spread over partially baked crust.Continue baking 25-30 minutes or until golden. Cool in pan on wire rack. Cut into bars while warm. Cool completely. Makes 36 bars. Favorite appetizers The following holiday-party recipes are from my favorite-appetizer archives. The first was one I asked for when it was served at a gathering of snowbirds on Hutchinson Island, Fla. The main ingredient is chutney, which you can find at Meijer’s in Southgate and Woodhaven. CHUTNEY CHEESE BALL Combine an 8-ounce package softened cream cheese with ¼ cup Major Grey’s Chutney, ½ cup finely chopped sliced almonds, 1 teaspoon curry powder and ¼ teaspoon dry mustard. Serve with crackers as a dip, or form into a ball, chill until firm and roll in flaked coconut. PARTY MEATBALLS Combine 1 pound ground beef, 1 beaten egg, ¼ cup plain breadcrumbs and salt and pepper to taste. Form into walnut-size balls. Bake at 400 degrees 15-20 minutes. Meanwhile, combine a 12-ounce jar Heinz chili sauce and ½ cup grape jelly in a saucepan. Stir and heat until jelly is melted, then add meatballs. Simmer 1 hour, serve and enjoy. HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

Sit Down Session With Crown Enterprises By Pamela A. Frucci It was unexpected, but I had an idea I wanted to share with Matty Moroun on a use of the abandoned Michigan Central Depot, which has stood empty for too many years. I contacted a person I knew in the Wayne County administration, and he gave me the number of Michael Samhat of Crown Enterprises, who handles the Moroun properties. In fact, he was the lead person in negotiating their purchase of McLouth Steel’s abandoned plant in Riverview. I called and was given a date, Nov. 8, when I could meet with Mr. Samhat at his office building in Westland. Before the meeting, I contacted John Wilkie, architect and Grosse Ile resident, who’s company Wilkie and Zanley has designed many award-winning buildings in the Downriver area, including converting the former Naval hangar on the Island into a state-of-the-art township hall. I asked him for help from the Sidock Group, the firm which has taken over his building in Wyandotte. He gave me the names of Manual Kollias and George Petkowski. I was amazed at their skill in design. My idea I wanted to share with Moroun was to convert the deport into an amusement park, with a giant Ferris wheel and merry-go-round with all makes of automobiles to ride rather than benches and horses. Motown music would be played. It could also be a train museum. The building would carry a sign; “Moroun’s Motown Motorcity ‘Musement Park.” My professional designers had a wise suggestion. Before the depot could be turned into a destination, the area would have to attract people. They came up with a power point showing how the rather blighted surroundings of the depot could have a landscaped park with underground parking, residential buildings and shops. Amazingly, Crown Enterprises spent an hour with us going over our proposal. Mr. Samhat was cordial and didn’t brush us off; but unfortunately at the meeting, we were told that an international firm had met with them previously, and they were so confident that they would take over the building, they had scheduled other meetings to negotiate a deal. Before leaving the meeting, I shared with Mr. Samhat a concern that many Island residents have re: what Crown Enterprises plans to do with the McLouth Steel plant once taken down. Will it impact the toll bridge? “No,” he told me, “but we’ll be using trucks and rail for transportation.” It’s a wait-and-see situation, as far as the future use of the old McLouth Steel property, and how it will affect traffic in our area. At least, that giant eyesore across the river will be taken down.

A GHOSTLY IDEA

I haven’t been feeling quite myself this month. No doubt this has more to do with ghosts than a headcold, however. And in specific terms, the reason for my seasonal sea-change has to do with Dickens—Charles Dicken. Perhaps you were coerced into reading one of his masterpieces By Mark McPherson in high school or college. Better yet, you may have included his works within your own collection, or borrowed one from the library. Or just as likely, you may have seen all or bits of one of the several movie versions of “A Christmas Carol.” I’ve come to know “Boz,” or “the Inimitable”, as Dickens called himself, due to that Yuletide classic he wrote 174 years ago. It’s been regarded since as the best secular celebration of the season, if not its most famous ghost story. And who doesn’t recall miserly Ebenezer Scrooge, or that selfless little be-crutched waif, Tiny Tim? And what about those ghosts, harking from the Past, Present, and Future? About twenty-five years ago I decided to include Dickens within my pantheon of dramatic, “one-man show” staged vehicles. But unlike my other “friends,” such as Doyle, Churchill, Shaw, Roosevelt, Twain or even C.S. Lewis, only Dickens seems best received for one month a year. So on that note, and always somewhere between the First and Thirty-first of each December, I’ve trucked out my “variety show” version of Dickensiana, usually featuring a massive cast giving forth with music, poetry and joviality. Then I ‘ve closed the extravaganza with a dramatic “reading”, as Dickens himself did it on stage, of the famous holiday classic.

Over the years we’ve had fun “doing Dickens,” and I’m pleased to say, we’ve often raised a nice amount of money for causes ranging from soup kitchens to scholarships, and church roof repairs to one of my favorites, animal shelters. And for that reason I’ve decided this year to lend a hand to aid Grosse Ile’s “creature friends” by resurrecting Dickens and his ghosts once again. But this time with a decided twist (not Oliver). For after presenting my “Dickens of a Christmas” show for seemingly forever, I thought it time for a change. Therefore I’ve written a new play— entitled “A Ghostly Idea.” It concerns the reasons why Dickens came to write his Yuletide classic. That and how, as a worried, depressed, and self-haunted writer, he wanted to do something to raise public consciousness about the problems of his day. What sort? How about homelessness, illiteracy, illness, drink, drug, or child abuse, and more. Sound familiar? Sadly, even today, nearly two centuries post-Dickens, don’t we see those things yet? So, if you would like to accept my invitation, we’ll be premiering “A Ghostly Idea” one time only-Sunday, December 17, at 5pm. The place? Historic St. James Episcopal Church, where I’ll be presenting Dickens entirely on my own—but with the musical help of two very, very talented friends—Doug Scott of Grosse Ile Presbyterean and Bobby Rangoonanan of St. James. The price of admission is free. Donations will be received for the Grosse Ile Animal Shelter and its T.AI.L.S. organization. Plus, there will be a free “high tea” after the performance. So do come join us. Dickens, myself, and of course, those ghosts will be glad to see you! For further information, please ring 734-671-5424.

A Kitty’s Christmas Kindness There is a tale told among cats, passed from generation to generation, from momcat to kit. It is not a tale told by Siamese in the palaces of Siam, nor purred by the pampered pussycats of Persia. It is a short tale, but it is not meowed among the Manx. It is a tale told By Susan Palmer among common street and rescue cats. The tale is also shared by abandoned house cats, huddled against the Winter’s chill in a discarded cardboard box in the alley behind the Diner, and by those still half wild under the full moon where fireflies dance in the pine trees. The tale concerns tabby cats. Tabby cats are everyday ordinary cats (if there is such a thing). They come in many colors and all shapes and sizes. They have tiger stripes on their sides and tails and dark lines around their eyes (from which Egyptian women modeled their eye makeup) and a very distinctive “M” on their forehead. The tale is one of comfort and joy that is over 2,000 years old and tells how the tabby cat came to bear the remarkable “M” on its brow. In a Bethlehem stable a king was born. One evening, with a star brilliantly shining in the heavens, three wandering wise men were about to conclude their journey seeking

the birthplace of the Messiah. Mary, knowing this to be a special night, went about preparing her son to meet these royal travelers. But her infant son was restless. He cried and fussed and would not be quieted. Mary tried everything to comfort him. Finally, she placed him in his cradle, and sitting beside him, rocked him and hummed a lullaby. Still he cried. All the animals in the stable looked on helplessly at the small crying creature. There was a family of cats living in this simple stable in Bethlehem. Maybe the momcat mistook the crying for that of one of her kittens, (experts have proven that the call of a kitten and that of a baby are identical), but whatever the reason, as quiet and true as the star dancing through the heavens, she quickly climbed into the cradle, and purring (that deep rumbly sing-song purr of total love and devotion), snuggled against the infant’s side. Smiling, the child slept. Mary was overjoyed at the kindness of the cat. She was so grateful, she told the cat that forever after her kind should bear the letter “M” for Mary on their foreheads so all will know of her loving deed; and they would walk proudly with their tails held high, for they shall be forever blessed, as are those of us who are fortunate enough to share our lives with such charmed companions.

Patriot’s Pen By David L. Dyer A special salute goes to Mrs Susan Dusute, Grosse Ile Middle School English teacher, for garnering sixtyfive entries into this years VFW Patriot’s Pen essay writing contest. The patriotic theme this year is “America’s Gift to my Generation.” Since we are allowed one winner for each fifteen entries, we are sending four winners forward to the district competition where a single winner will be chosen. That winner will go to the state competition and then on to Washington, DC where the ultimate award of $5000 is awarded. Let’s not look at that $5000 award since it will be awarded to only one person from thousands of entries. Just take it one step at a time. In

fact, our four winners needn’t even take another step; they are already winners. This is evidenced by the $100 first place award and the certificate they each received by our VFW Post. From here they advance to our District Four Headquarters for a banquet to be held in their honor. At this banquet they will be individually introduced and escorted by a member of the honor guard to the front of the audience. At that time photos will be taken and they will receive another certificate which will be well worth framing. For now, let’s just dwell on the fact that we have our four winners. I ask you, Grosse Ile, to join me in wishing them the very best.

By Sarah Hemsworth Herbert Dennis started the Grosse Ile Little Devils in 1969. GIYRA evolved from the Grosse Ile Little Devils and is to celebrate a upcoming 50 years since founded. GIYRA stands for Grosse Ile Youth Recreation Association. In the GIYRA sports there are football, cheerleading, basketball, baseball and softball. John Howard is the president of football and cheer, and this year there were an average of 100 football players on the junior varsity or varsity teams, and an average of 50 cheerleaders on the junior varsity and varsity cheer team. Each of the football teams went to the Downriver Junior Football League Playoffs this fall. The JV team went undefeated in their season and won the Peanut Bowl. Varsity football beat the undefeated River Rouge and won the Peanut Bowl as an outcome. Both junior varsity and varsity cheerleading teams took second place at their end of the year competitions with the Downriver Junior Football league. At the end

of the football and cheerleading season, each team received a Perfect Sportsmanship Award. One hundred percent of the coaching and support staff are volunteers that dedicate their time and commit to helping the kids throughout the season. The volunteers are trained through the USA Football’s Heads Up program, which takes them through proper tackling techniques, equipment usage, uniform fitting, sudden cardiac arrest steps and concussion training. “What the coaches and board members do on a daily basis trickle down onto the kids, which helps them work hard to achieve their goals,” said Howard. GIYRA helps develop

young boys and girls through athletic focusing, setting and understanding goals, and teamwork. John Howard and others, are proud of the board members and coaches actions and their commitment. Over the past two years, GIYRA football and cheerleading has raised more than $60,000 from fundraisers, which the money went toward topof-the-line equipment and uniforms. The program focuses on promoting the kids and working toward evolving their character traits. GIYRA is a joint team with Trenton, because the lack of a junior football program in Trenton. Half of the football team consist of Grosse Ile players and majority of the

cheerleading team holds Grosse Ile girls. Registration for football and cheer can be found at giyrasports, com beginning in late April. GIYRA basketball holds registration starting Oct 14, holding practices once a week beginning in December and their first game will be held on Jan 13, 2018. John Farrell is the president of the GIYRA basketball program, where he focus is on teaching fundamental basketball skills in a positive environment to prepare students for Middle School basketball and beyond. GIYRA players learn how to be good team players, while having fun together and practicing good sportsmanlike behaviors. The coaching staff is 100% volunteer based, similar to the football and cheerleading program. GIYRA never turns down a child and focuses on the development of all characteristics and athletic capabilities. The commitment of the coaches and young athletes is the key to success in all GIYRA sports seasons.

Grosse Ile High School Varsity Sailing Team Runner Up at State Finals On October 14th, the Grosse Ile High School varsity sailing team traveled to Traverse City Yacht Club to compete in the Michigan State Sailing Championships. The day started out with light air which built to 15-20 knots. The team did really well in the light air jumping up to first place. Grosse Ile slipped to second place toward the end of the day when the wind picked up. Molly Matthews and Meghan Dieball placed 3rd in the A Division. Ian Reimel, Michael Kalata, and

Kyla Bugarin ended up 2nd in the B Division, giving the team a 2nd place finish at the Michigan State Championships. “We congratulate the varsity sailing team for their success and for putting in the hard work it takes to succeed at such a high level. It was a great fall season for all Grosse Ile High School athletes, and we look forward to equally exciting winter and spring seasons,” commented James Okler, Athletic Director for Grosse Ile Township Schools.

GIEF Supporting Elementary Level Grants

The Grosse Ile Educational Foundation is a volunteer, non-profit organization committed to funding life-long educational experiences for the students and families of Grosse Ile, Michigan. The foundation financially supports creative and exemplary educational opportunities through the Grosse Ile Township Schools and the community. In November GIEF accepted multiple grant applications at the elementary level in our school district. Kurt Kobiljak presented a check at Parke Lane Elementary School for the GIEF funding of a grant written by first grade teacher, Nancy Pilkington, to purchase a subscription for Scholastic News Magazine. All first grade students at Parke Lane will benefit from the non-fiction content which also includes both social studies and science skill-building activities. GIEF also funded a grant

written by Kindergarten teacher, Laurie Biro, to purchase an ESGI (Educational Software for Guiding Instruction) assessment platform for all kindergarten classes. The ESGI program will allow teachers to assess and track student progress, differentiate instruction, and keep parents informed on their child’s development. Perhaps the most exciting was the grant request by Elise Metric at Meridian Elementary. She request for a grant from GIEF to purchase a 3D Printer for the STEAM program at Meridian Elementary. The new STEAM program was created to provide students with open-ended challenges to inspire creative design and solutions to real world problems. The goal is that the 3D printer will increase student engagement as they are able to see their individual and group designs through to manufacturing.

Grosse Ile Creative Writing Club by Gail Albin As the months fly by, we realize that we are getting closer to 2018 and those dreaded New Year Resolutions or even personal pledges to selfimprove a part of our life. Maybe you want to improve your annual Christmas letter, making it not too long, yet very entertaining. If you like to write and want to be around other writers, check out the Grosse Ile Creative Writing Club. It began nearly ten years ago. Pam Frucci, the late Irene Will and Donna Henson started the G.I. Creative writing Club. It is a branch of the Grosse Ile Alliance for the Arts. We meet at Victorian Place, which

CHRISTMAS

is Susie Harrison’s real estate office at 7717 Macomb St., Grosse Ile. The meetings are the first Monday of the month at 7:00 PM. If it falls on a holiday, we meet the next Monday. We use a very pleasant dining room. Some members have moved, and new members would be welcome. Former high school teacher Pam Frucci gives us guidance and shows examples of outstanding writing by various authors. She makes the assignment for the next meeting. We all hear the same plan, yet a month later each writer has a very different and distinctive opinion and style. Come, watch, listen and learn with us.

CONTINUED from page 7 pulled out a gift. I called the name of the child who came running up and sat on my knee. I assisted them as they open their present. That scenario was repeated forty times during three sessions. Three, four, five and six year olds are the same all over the world. I have seen them in Europe, The Far East, Canada and across the States and they are the same completely innocent little children. I quickly thought of those Newtown children that would not be able to sit on Santa’s knee or even the younger ones in Vietnam that were blown to bits as villages were destroyed. Then I would look at the cheerful faces of these children and I got such a jubilant feeling of contentment that I’d never before experienced. If it hadn’t been for the hair, the whiskers, the beard and the glasses that completely concealed my face, those kids may have had another perception of Santa Claus. They would have seen tears of sadness and happiness streaming down. This year, though Janet is now retired, Jessica has asked me for an encore. I told her I’d be delighted and will do so December 19th and 20th.

‘Listening in on the Island’ CREATIVE WRITING CLUB IS CHALLENGED TO WRITE A LEXOPHILE I received in an email from a friend with examples of lexophiles and read several to the Creative Writing Club at our August meeting: Such as: “You can tune a piano but you can’t tuna fish,” “To write with a broken pencil is pointless,” and “A chicken crossing the road is poultry in motion.” I challenged the By Pamela A. Frucci CWC to try their hand at a lexophile. After a little thought, I came up with “He tried to kiss the girl in the flower shop but she didn’t have tulips.” Try your hand! HAIL TO HALEY EBLIN, ACE REPORTER I met Haley Ebling as a Grosse Ile H.S. student after she had won the VFW’s local essay writing contest. I found out that when her family lived in Ohio before moving to Michigan, she had won writing awards. She started writing GIHS news for the TrentonTrib and then having graduated this June, she was one of 11 young people out of 50 who applied and were hired as interns at the Detroit Free Press this summer. Several articles were published with her byline. Now she’s off to Syracuse University in New York to major in journalism and finance. With her talent at writing, I see Haley moving further up the ladder

as an ace reporter!

TRACEY KING CHOOSES FORMER STUDENT TO SING FOR NATIONAL MUSIC GROUP Tracey King, who has a studio in Taylor, has had 30 Grosse Ile students train at her studio and become singers of renown. Former student Kirsten Sparks was asked by Mrs. King to be the featured singer at the July convention in Dearborn of the American Guild of Music which she serves a president---and just got reelected. Mrs. King said Kirsten, who won the G.I. Musicale scholarship in 2008 and went on to sing in musical theater in Pigeon Forge, TN and on cruise ships, wowed the crowd, especially the 700 young people in attendance who were competing. Kirsten sang songs of inspiration and encouragement. COUPLE TOGETHER AGAIN Yvonne Wardlaw and Jack Vassallo dated when they were students over 60 years ago at Wyandotte Roosevelt but went their separate ways after graduation and got married. Now both are widowed, and rediscovered each other on Facebook after 62 years apart! They’re dating again and I ran into them, both enjoy music----Jack sang with the Seaway Chorale---at the October 27 G.I. Musicale performance at the G.I. Presbyterian Church.a Another coincidence: both Yvonne and Jack celebrate their birthday on May 23.

YOUR BETTER HEALTH

Minimizing Stress During the Holidays Having a Merry Christmas or a Happy Holiday many times can be lost in translation. Remember that the holidays are supposed to be a cheerful time of the year, an opportunity to connect or reconnect with friends and family. For many though, it can be a time of stress, anxiety, By Dr. Michael Concessi, loneliness, fatigue, a Grosse Ile resident and depression. A survey by the American Psychological Assoc. (APA), revealed that for most Americans, stress tends to increase rather than decrease during the holidays, especially with women more than men. So much of the true meaning of the holidays has been lost over time, in part due to commercialism of the season. Setting up the perfect party with decorating, cleaning, cooking and baking. It could be buying the perfect gift(s) for everyone, with the shopping, wrapping and for many, the lack of money or concerns of running up the credit card debt. Maybe it’s those relaxing experiences of traveling with the kids in the car “Mom, Dad are we there yet?” or those airport incidents of lost luggage, overbookings, delayed flights and let us not forget those extra luggage fees. Whatever the stress factors may be, time, work, money, hype/ commercialism, diet and the list goes on, the holidays for some can be as welcome as a root canal or migraine headache. Most people during the holidays don’t consciously think about devoting different activities to managing their stress, but studies show that people are likely to engage in less healthy sedentary behavior such as watching TV or movies and sleep to manage their stress. Others are more likely to report that they fall into the bad habit of drinking or comfort eating to cope with stress. On the other hand, with the religious aspect of the holidays and remembering the reason for the season, many individuals find a

reconnection with their faith. Through the use of prayer or by attending religious services, many find peace and reduced stress as added benefit as well as a remedy to the hype or commercialism of the season. No matter what the cause of your stress, anxiety, depression … there are stress relieving activities to help counter these problems: 1) Exercise releases endorphins, which have antidepressant-like effect on your brain while helping to decrease muscle tension 2) Getting Outside and walking around in nature has been shown to lower the hormone cortisol, which can result in better sleep and rest. 3) Diet for all purposes should be put on temporary hold. Just remember to eat smaller portions. (Our New Year resolutions will be here soon enough.) 4) Volunteer or do an act of charity (visiting a relative, helping those less fortune or even adding pocket change to the Red Kettle will give you a sense of happiness) 5) Have Realistic Expectations of the holidays (ask for help when planning parties and put a budget on gift giving) 6) Prayer & Religious Services 7) Meditation & Yoga 8) Listen to Music 9) Moderate Drinking 10) Remember what’s important (Faith, Family and Friends) Depending on how well you manage stress and added responsibilities during your lifetime, especially during the holidays, can have a long lasting impact on your overall health. This holiday season should not be about stress… it should be about relaxing and sharing good times with those you love. When you find yourself getting caught up in the hype and commercialization of the season, stop, take a deep breath and remember the true reason for the season. From my family to yours, Merry Christmas. In the next edition, I will cover realistic expectations for our New Year Resolutions.

Independent, Unique, Excellent Soul Satisfying Exhilaration on Main Street One of the things you may have come to know about me through this column is that I am utterly enthralled by the elements of success in shops that are local and independently owned. OK, obsessed, too. Just had an extraordinarily By Peter Rose satisfying 24 hour excursion that began in Chelsea, as good friends joined me and my wife for dinner and a play. As we arrived in town, we saw the streets lined with milk bottle luminaries and throngs of people,. Chelsea was packed, we were surprised! We found a scarce parking spot, and Janelle and I were led by our friends through the back door of a shop they wanted us to see, an awesome place called Garden Mill. Outdoor décor and furniture and stuff that might have patio intentions but folks use indoors every bit as much. We loved it. Creativity and passion were obvious and everywhere. But we had to check in at our restaurant, so we exited out the front door ... and onto Chelsea’s main street (Main Street), where we found ourselves in a thick crowd of people, amassing for their annual lighted Holiday parade. It was a happy place. Crowded and eager. We checked in and had an hour to explore before dinner. Right next to the Garden Mill was a women’s clothing store called Violet and Moss, had to go inside and check it out. We found a small and eclectic place, with significant points of shared contact with our store. We told the woman there that we owned clothing stores as well, that we loved to seek out places that inspired us, and that this place surely did. Could have fit 6 or 7 of them in our store, but loved the place, its quirkiness and friendliness. Found out that it shared the same owner as the first store; and indeed, we visited two MORE stores that were owned by the same person, who we MET at the third store, The Potter’s Shed, a place that cannot be explained, and I would hate to even try. After walking around, I asked the woman there where in the heck they

shopped to fill the store with such odd, unique, humorous and COOL stuff. She told me it was HER that did the shopping and displaying and everything else because it was hers. I told her she was insane and that I loved her, now having felt passion on display at three consecutive stores. She used to visit our store, it turns out. She urged us to visit her 4th place called Kitty Face, which was all about clothes and toys and décor and dolls and stuffed animals for children. Once again, so fun to be there. But we had to rush out quickly, because the lighted parade had begun! Another lunatic display of quirkiness. Adults and kids alike, wrapped in lighted strands of lights, all gleeful as car after lighted car and float proceeded down the street. Santa, too. Before we got to the reason we were there, I had been treated to some of the best food for my soul I could ever have hoped for, all the more satisfying for the serendipity of it all. It was magic. The Common Grill is a local and insanely busy restaurant. We’ve eaten there 4 times, and loved every bite of every meal. God of Carnage was a very interesting 4-person play at The Purple Rose Theater. Highly recommended, GO! Our evening ended. Great friends, great food and wine, great theater. Preceded by the niftiest community event I have witnessed, in a town that we had to go back to the next day to explore more fully. We visited several more shops, found stuff that WILL be featured in OUR stores, and just had a wonderful day experiencing the vibrant and independent town of Chelsea. Alive and well is how we ended up thinking of local and independent retail. They totally deserve the patronage of the lucky folks that shop there. Energy and inspiration in Chelsea! In a world of nationals and internet, the power of uniqueness and passion are still hard to dismiss. Go Local!
