It is our hope that this article has assisted you in understanding the design of millage requests in 2022 and emphasized that Grosse Ile Township has prioritized affordability in designing these millage requests. In closing, although the Township cannot guarantee future requests will not result in a deviation from the depicted millage totals as shown in this article, what can be promised is that requests will be founded in the need to maintain or improve the quality of daily life, and the sustainability of property values; and that any future requests will always be designed with priority being placed on property tax affordability.
As fellow taxpayers, property tax affordability is personal. As your Township Manager and Township Supervisor, this personal concern has an influence on our professional concerns. Thus, anytime we are asked to review how to address the provision of Township services and capital improvements, our first question is how does the issue impact our tax rates.During the recent Aug. 2 primary, voters were asked to approve a new .95 millage to undertake numerous Grosse Ile Wastewater Treatment Plant improvements. This request was approved by the voters with approximately 70 percent support. We are confident that this millage request was supported by the voters because they identified the importance of these improvements, the fact that they were mandated by the state of Michigan, and because the design of the millage request prioritized affordability.
Grosse Ile Township encourages you to vote on November 8, 2022 and make your voice heard on these very important Township issues.
Second, the Township’s DPS Commission, based on a request from the Township Supervisor, has developed and recommended the placement of a 1.4 mill levy request on the ballot for road improvements. This millage will be used by Grosse Ile Township to design, bid, and contract with Township selected contractors to make repairs to both secondary and neighborhood roads.
Between 2002 and 2011, Grosse Ile Township levied substantial millages to support major sewer infrastructure work. These millages supported bonds in excess of 45 million dollars. These bonds and representative millages are scheduled to steadily decrease starting in 2023 and expire completely in 2028. When designing the Aug. 2 Wastewater Treatment Plant Millage, the Township scheduled a delay in the levy of this millage until 2025.This delay was to take advantage of expiring millages. The “expiring millage” chart illustrates this levy design. With the expiration of the aforementioned millages, the Township has been provided some financial flexibility to address additional community priorities beyond work at the Wastewater Treatment Plant. During the upcoming Nov. 8th, 2022 general election, voters will be asked to consider two new millages. The first, a .75 mill levy will be used to help fund the Grosse Ile Fire Department’s operations and functional capabilities.
Each of these issues have financial and tax considerations for property owners.Aswith the Wastewater Treatment Millage, if passed, the proposed Fire Department millage will be a delayed levy. The proposed millage will commence in 2023 (rather than 2022) to coincide with reductions in the previously discussed sanitary sewer millages.Regarding the road improvement millage, the DPS Commission reviewed the required scope of work, future millage reductions, the overall Township millage levy, and settled on a 1.4 mill amount which fits within expiring millage totals. The impact of the November fire department and road improvement proposals are depicted in the “impact chart.” Much more information on the details of these proposals will be available in the next few weeks. As you will notice in the chart, based upon current and proposed millages, differentials between existing millage amounts and future millage amounts are fairly minimal and millage totals will actually dip below 2022 levels.

ContinuedBALLOTfrom page 1 enhance the educational experience for our students. GITS is a premiere district with a lot of tradition. This bond proposal will allow us to capitalize on that excellence and personalize the learning experience for each and every Grosse Ile child,” said Superintendent Valerie Orr.
BOnd PrOPOSal 2 Shall Grosse Ile Township Schools, Wayne County, Michigan, borrow the sum of not to exceed $16,940,000 and issue its general obligation unlimited tax bonds therefore, in one or more series, for the purpose of erecting, remodeling, furnishing and refurnishing, and equipping and re-equipping performing arts facilities and athletic facilities; and preparing, developing, improving, and equipping athletic fields?”
For more information on the bond, please go to www.gischools.org, contact any school principal, or reach out to Superintendent of Schools, Valerie Orr, at 734-362-2581. Most importantly, remember to vote because “the future is not a gift, it is an achievement.”
In essence, the district would be able to sell bonds for building modernization, infrastructure improvements, safety and security measures, and upgrades in technology and equipment. Due to enrollment projections, the district’s mission is to “right size” and create one community with one elementary school—leading to a unified K through 5th grade culture. In the area of infrastructure improvements, the goal is to create innovation spaces, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), and other personalized learning environments that align with student future-focused learning. Further, the bond would upgrade security features to provide safety for students, staff, and community alike. Passage of Bond Proposal 1 “would result in an estimated zero tax rate increase over the debt millage taxes levied in 2022.”
September 13 — October 13, 2022 • Page 5GROSSE ILE GRAND
Under state law, bond proceeds may not be used to pay administrator, teacher, or staff salaries, routine maintenance costs or other school operating expenses. The money generated by this proposed bond must be directed toward improving Grosse Ile Township Schools’ facilities so that programs can be enhanced.
Proposal 2 would provide “competitive educational facilities, updating technology, auditoriums, athletic fields, and playgrounds” which can be used by both the schools and community members.” One only has to drive by any number of schools in the Downriver area, let alone other school districts in the tri-county area, to see the huge upgrades to schools and athletic facilities.Within the past few years, school districts like Gibraltar, Trenton, Woodhaven, Huron, Riverview, Southgate, Allen Park, Lincoln Park, Ecorse, and River Rouge have all passed bond issues to improve their educational infrastructure, and enhance the quality of life for their communities.Proposal2would allow the district to sell bonds to “improve middle and high school athletic facilities, including synthetic turf fields. It would upgrade the high school stadium, including bleachers, press box, scoreboard, and sound system. It would also upgrade the gyms and locker rooms at both the middle school and high school. Additionally, passage of Proposal 2 would upgrade performing arts auditoriums, including audio and visual capabilities, lighting and stage equipment at both buildings. Bond Proposal 2 would result in “an estimated 1.2 Mill increase over the debt millage taxes levied in 2022.”
Shall Grosse Ile Township Schools, Wayne County, Michigan, borrow the sum of not to exceed $55,450,000 and issue its general obligation unlimited tax bonds therefore, in one or more series, for the purpose of: erecting, furnishing, and equipping additions to Parke Lane Elementary School; remodeling, furnishing and refurnishing, and equipping and reequipping school buildings and other facilities; acquiring and installing instructional technology in school buildings; purchasing school buses; and preparing, developing, improving, and equipping an outdoor learning area, athletic fields, playgrounds, parking areas, sidewalks, and sites?

You do not need to be a resident of Trenton to take this survey; you just need to have experienced the waterfront, parks and/or trails in order to offer feedback.
The third scenario is Commercial and R&D Redevelopment.Waterfront
The Public Design Corps calls this a Story Map because it traces the history of Trenton’s waterfront, identifies current challenges, offers three possible waterfront futures or scenarios, and invites community stakeholder input. The goal is to get as many people as possible involved in re-envisioning the waterfront.
Scan the QR code or go to the web site and take the survey. Every voice matters. storymaps.arcgis.com/stories/
Also, feel free to attend the Downtown Development Authority meetings on the third Thursday of each month from now until December. They start at 6 p.m. in the second-floor caucus room of Trenton City Hall. The next meeting is Sept. 15. Let them know which scenario you would like to see in the future.
Downriver waterfront: Your opinion is wanted
This might be the sweet spot that makes everyone – and the city’s coffers – happy. According to the website above: “An influx of local and state funding streams targets the project sites as critical assets to advance urban resilience, climate adaptation, and regional competitiveness in the Great Lakes Basin. This renewed commitment to public spending animates private investors to enter into ambitious partnerships in Trenton.Asaresponse, this scenario offers a glimpse of how commercial, research and development could transform the waterfront revitalization district into a prosperous urban place. The transformation will anchor new local and regional uses and open up the waterfront to the public, further activating access and enjoyment of the Trenton Chanel and the Detroit River. This scenario means increased governance complexity, larger economic investment, more stringent environmental clean-ups, and necessary controls to ensure new developments are not negatively impacting Trenton’s current social fabric.Managing this ambitious urban transformation over time will also require the formation of waterfront authorities participated by public officials, land-owners, and private entities, foundations, and citizen advisory groups.
Do you care about the future of the brownfields along the waterfront in Trenton?Doyou want to see more industrial sites, commercial sites or railroad cars? How about mixed use, retail/ residential with apartments, condos andMayberestaurants?morenature, trails, and parks would be your cup of tea, or a little bit of all these ideas?
The costs and time involved for remediating the properties for new industries and businesses is much less than it is for making the area suitable for residential/retail use and parklands. Possible industries and businesses that could be helping recoup that municipal tax loss could be “intermodal shipping, solar and nuclear energy research and production, warehouse storage and a ferryHowever, terminal.”this direction comes with potential environmental impacts, and will limit public access to the waterfront. Scenario 2 is the Trenton Great Lakes Way Biennial The goal of this proposal is to “improve the existing physical infrastructure supporting the Great Lakes Blue and Green Ways at Trenton, and to activate the trail system through cultural programming and small nodes of access to the Detroit River.” This is a great result for the people and nature, but not so much the bottom line.
September 13 — October 13, 2022 • Page 7GROSSE ILE GRAND SUSAN PINkOwSkI
The result is the attraction of new blue and green economies and the decisive commitment to environmental stewardship that will situate Trenton as a blueprint for sustainable urban transformation and a regional destination.
This web site spotlights the Great Lakes Way, a 156-mile network of trails and blueways that extend from Lake Huron to Lake Erie. With the three large brownfield areas ripe for transition, the Taubman College Public Design Corps would like to get your insight and past experiences with the outdoor recreational offerings that are in the Trenton area.
The scenario’s new programmatic offerings are supported by ample access to the waterfront and related amenities, and the integration with the existing green and blue trails.” What scenario do you want? What ideas do you have for the future of Trenton’s waterfront?
Currently, there is a web site created by a group of graduate students at University of Michigan Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning’s Public Design Corps led by Professor Maria Arquero de Alarcon, who are working with Trenton Councilwoman Wendy Pate, former Trenton Mayor Pat Hartig and environmental scholar John Hartig, who is the chair of the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan’s Great Lakes Way Advisory Committee, the impetus for this effort.
If you have thoughts on what the future of Trenton’s waterfront should look like, now is the perfect time to share your input with the folks who are working at moving Trenton forward in a positive way.
Per the web site, your input will help them analyze “the accessibility, frequency of use, physical condition, perceptions, and future expectations for the future usage of the waterfront properties and the system of trails.” You may access this informative site about The Great Lakes Way @ Trenton by going to storymaps.arcgis. com/storiesand look for the QR code in the upper right.
Scenario 1 is entitled Quick Revenue. The closing of those industrial sites came with a loss of revenue for the city. That needs to be recouped in some way and attracting more business and industry is a way to accomplish that.
The eyesore that was the closed down McLouth Steel site is now being considered for redevelopment. Input from Downriver residents is being sought.

The Simsonian Run, which began in 2003, has been held in honor of beloved teacher and coach, Steve Sims who died unexpectedly that year of a dissecting aortic aneurysm at age 46. His family and the Friends of Sims established the Steve Sims Leadership Scholarship at Grosse Ile High School for an outstanding female scholar/ athlete, since Steve mainly coached young women athletes. But, his former students and athletes agree his greatest legacy was his sense of fairness, and his dedication in helping them become strong, independent women and men. This year, and going forward, the Grosse Ile Educational Foundation partnered with the race, and created a scholarship in his name for outstanding male scholar-athletes. The 2022 Sims’ scholarships were awarded to Camden Finazzo and Ashlyn Weatherly.Whatwas striking about this year’s event was the number of families who joined in the fun. Youngsters about to run their first one mile race, came to the starting line and assumed a sprinter’s “on your mark,” only to learn the hard reality of pace.Parents and grandparents joined them on their jaunt, cheering them to victory, finishing on the Grosse Ile High School track. One tearful youth was carried on his father’s shoulders to a joyful finish. Or, the 90-year-old runner demonstrating the

This year’s 5K winner was Carter McCallister, 17 year old runner from Monroe Jefferson with a blistering time of 15:53. The women’s overall winner in the 5K was Jenna Pilachowski, also of Monroe Jefferson, with an outstanding time of 19:05.

For decades of racing, Boddy has always carried the American flag in honor of his Wyandotte Roosevelt buddies — all killed in Vietnam. In the real “spirit that made America,” Bob Sims, brother of Steve, volunteered to be the standard bearer, and continue the honor. And, honor he did, carrying Boddy’s flag in the race. Because, after 20 Simsonian runs, not many people at the race ever knew Steve Sims. But, the run is not just about Steve Sims. People remembered loved ones whom they have lost.
Friends of Sims -- Patti Bennett, Maureen Fielder and Kevin Wilson, no longer with us. Gone too young, too soon. But, in the greater sense, this race is a celebration of life. It’s about building community. A community that cares. Of giving back and passing it on. It’s a connection with the past, with the present, in the hope of the future through education. Just like it has for the past 20 years, the awards ceremony and after race party kicked off with the Grosse Ile fight song, accompanied by the Red Devil cheer team performing stunts on the track. Besides every entrant receiving coveted T-shirts, the top three runners in eight different age groups received medals. The winners of each category also earned a specially engraved beverage glass with the Simsonian 5K logo. As always, all proceeds from the race go to the Steve Sims Leadership Scholarships.ThisGrosse Ile tradition would not be possible without the continued support and dedication of our sponsors. Presenting sponsors: the Grosse Ile Educational Foundation, Mans Lumber, Monroe Sports Varsity Athletics, the Kobiljak Family, the Lewis Family, the Reno Family, the Hanley Family, and the Sullivan Family. This year, Steve’s Greenville and MSU buddies Craig Morford, John Adams, and Jim Kordupel made the annual pilgrimage and kept his spirit alive. Lots of love goes to my dear wife for putting up with me, and for all her behind the scenes effort in fastidious attention to detail. The Stevenson household looks like an Amazon procurement center year after year. Special thanks go to the Grosse Ile Township Schools, the Grosse Ile Police and Reserves. Kim O’Farrell and Brian Payette of the Recreation Department, for race day aid and assistance. Race timing was quickly and deftly and handled by Brad Fairchild, former track coach at Eastern Michigan University. DJ’s Mike Pehote and Patrick Rice kept the party rockin’ from beginning to end. A big shout out goes to the members of the Grosse Ile cross country, girls’ basketball, cheerleading, and lacrosse teams for their participation and help throughout the event. Always glad to see other Downriver schools run the race. Thanks to Monroe Jefferson, Carlson, and Gabriel Richard cross country teams for running year after year. Truly, an undertaking of this caliber would not be possible without the time, talent, and expertise of our running gurus — Grosse Ile Athletic Director Jim Okler, race master Ray Geist, and the Shot (and Race) Doctor Coach Max Bailey. Their continued efforts help make this run the Grosse Ile tradition that it Thisis.year’s t-shirt was emblazoned with every Sims-ism for the past 20 years. For 2022, the slogan read: “Still chasing the dream ... ” And, that’s what we’re all doing. Come join us for next year’s Simsonian 5K KickOff Classic on Aug. 19, 2023. Keep chasing the dream.

Grosse Ile Boy Scout Troop 1261 Eagle Scout James Quinlan has completed the replacement of the boardwalk with his fellow scouts and volunteers for his Eagle Project. The boardwalk was underwater for the past three years due to high water causing deck boards to warp and rot. Three hundred and fifty feet of boardwalk was replaced along with 6,500 new deck screws. More than $6,000 in lumber and materials was donated for this project to be completed. James Quinlan said the project took more than 374 hours and that several scouts and other volunteers assisted. Eagle Scout Mentor James Allen helped guide the project by sharing his expertise as a carpenter, builder, and providing all commercial equipment for the project. Patrick Quinlan, Assistant Scoutmaster was the Eagle coach for this project, ensuring that BSA guidelines were followed while Eagle Scout James Quinlan, led the project.Donations for this Eagle Scout project were received from Gorno Ford, Mans Lumber, J.G Morris Jr.

Time to clear up the confusion about Estate Planning ... The following definitions lack legal precision, but makes it easier to get a clear picture of what may be needed in your case. ■ Will – letter of intent of where you want your personal property to go – or not go.
■ Trust – This is a “company” that you start, and you become the CEO, “Trustee” and “Settlor.” The company outlives you, but continues to manage your assets as if you were alive by the successor CEO – whom you designate.

½ cup butter, softened 1 cup sugar 1 large egg at room temperature 1 cup finely shredded zucchini 1 teaspoon grated lemon peel 2 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon ½ teaspoon salt ½ cup raisins ½ cup chopped walnuts In a large bowl, cream butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in egg, zucchini and lemon zest. Combine the flour, baking soda, baking powder, cinnamon and salt; gradually add to creamed mixture and mix well. Stir in the raisins and walnuts. Drop by tablespoonfuls 3 inches apart on lightly greased baking sheets or parchment paper. Bake at 375 for 8 to 10 minutes or until lightly browned. Remove to wire racks to cool. For the glaze, combine the confectioners’ sugar and enough lemon juice to reach a thin spreading consistency. Spread or drizzle over the cooled cookies. The cookies are wonderful with a cup of tea.

■ living Will – Documents your wishes during your final days including final healthcare choices and possibly your burial wishes.
■ Power of attorney – Financial and Healthcare – you need both – the first so someone can pay your bills, the second, sometimes called a Patient Advocate, designates someone to make “hallway at the hospital” decisions to take the stress off the family. ■ ladybird deed – probably the best thing that has happened to owning a home. I love these deeds – you grant yourself a life estate – in your own property - but retain the power to sell or borrow against the property. If you do not sell before you pass, this “springs” the house out of your estate, and your heirs have instant ownership, subject to any mortgage or taxes owed or similar.Again, this is just a general description of the more popular terms – no one choice is a “silver bullet” but depending on how your estate gets planned out you can expedite a clean and clear process for the assets you worked a lifetime to save. Why wouldn’t you want to do that? Stop by or call and make an appointment and I’ll tell you what you’re going to need to do this right. 4 zucchini, quartered lengthwise ½ cup freshly grated Parmesan ½ teaspoon dried thyme ½ teaspoon dried oregano ½ teaspoon dried basil ¼ teaspoon garlic powder Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley leaves Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Coat a cooling rack with nonstick spray and place on a baking sheet; set aside. In a small bowl, combine Parmesan cheese, thyme, oregano, basil, garlic powder and salt and pepper to taste. Place zucchini onto prepared baking sheet. Drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with Parmesan mixture. Place in oven and bake until the zucchini is tender, about 15 minutes. Then broil for 2 to 3 minutes, or until crisp and golden brown. Serve garnished with parsley, if desired.
Zucchini has to be the most versatile vegetable in the world and is one of the healthiest, besides. My favorite among the zucchini recipes I made for this month’s column included a delicious cakey cookie studded with raisins and nuts and drizzled with a tangy lemon glaze. Because the recipe yields only about three dozen cookies, which disappeared quickly, you may want to bake a double batch.
HAPPY COOKING!
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Lightly grease an 8 1/2x4 ½-inch loaf pan. In a medium-sized bowl, beat together the brown sugar, liquid of choice, vegetable oil, eggs and vanilla until smooth. Whisk the baking powder, baking soda, salt and cinnamon into the flour, then add the dry ingredients to the liquid ingredients in the bowl, stirring or beating gently until smooth. Sir in the zucchini, walnuts and fruit. Scoop the batter into the baking pan and smooth if necessary. Sprinkle with the brown sugar. Bake for 55 to 65 minutes, until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. The toothpick shouldn’t reveal wet batter. Remove the bread from the oven and cool it in the pan for 10 minutes. Turn the bread out of the pan onto a rack to cool completely. For best results, don’t slice the bread until it is cool. Store the bread a cool room temperature, well wrapped, for several days. Freeze for longer storage.

A crowning achievement in Eve’s life was her 2018 induction into the Riverview Hall of Fame. After all those years of working in and volunteering for the city she loves the most, the city was able to respond in kind to one of its most giving citizens.
Riverview probably has benefitted the most from her talents and energy as she has been a resident here for over 45 years. During that time, she was instrumental in getting the Riverview Winterfest Run resurrected from extinction and ran it for 10 years, she created and chaired PAWS in the Park for four years and helped guide the Riverview Rowing Booster Club for three years. She also stepped up and improved her local city park, eventually forming Friends of the Glens Park, which over many years has raised and invested over $11,000 in improvements in the park using countless man (and women)-hours. They’ve planted over 70 trees and bushes, built a rock garden, installed three permanent bird houses, two park benches, edging, along with a hummingbird and butterfly garden. A large oasis has been created all because Eve took a few perennials from her garden into the park to spruce it up a bit. That, and many friendships, blossomed from there. Trenton also was a benefactor of her energy as she became the race director of the Zanglin Downriver Run for 14 years, which was the largest race in the Downriver area. In 35 years of running, she’s been in 16 marathons (that’s over 400 miles right there!), 13 Free Press marathons, one in New York, and two in Boston. Her lifetime mileage is 38,000. All the while, she raised two boys and worked for 33 years at AAA. Normally, retirement would be a time to relax, put your feet up and chill.Eve had other ideas. She was hired as a gardener at Riverview Highlands and happily put both green thumbs to work. She had an excellent mentor there in Scott Ford, who taught her all about trees, landscaping and planting.
Page 16 • September 13 — October 13, 2022 GROSSE ILE GRAND All about Eve Energetic resident happily shares her green thumb knowledge
The saying that good things come in small packages has never rung truer when you realize all the amazing things that Eve Howell has accomplished so far in her life.
She is now the gardener for the City of Riverview and her beautiful work can be seen all around the city, from the veterans’ garden between the library and the pond, around the gazebo where the bands play (and the little kids dance) on Wednesday evenings and at the entrance to Civic Park Drive where the gigantic flower pots can be found.
If you missed the last issue, a rain garden is a depressed area in the landscape that collects rainwater from a roof, driveway or street, and allows it to filter through some specific plants which help clean out pollutants in the runoff while providing food and shelter for butterflies, songbirds and otherBecausewildlife.all that isn’t enough, Eve also volunteers in two other gardening organizations on Grosse Ile, is an avid kayaker along with her husband and also spends some of her happy time at the Wyandotte Animal Shelter, as animals are a very big part of her life. At home she has a few cats along with two box turtles. One of those turtles attests to her life-long love of animals she has had her for 27 years!
The goat she’s posing with here is, alas, not hers but was happily encountered during a trip to Detroit’s Eastern Market.
She’s an Advanced Master Gardener now as well as a Rain Master Gardener (you’ve probably seen her on her Gator making the rounds).
Page 17
Eve is more than willing to share her green thumb and all the knowledge that goes along with it. She believes anyone can learn to plant flowers, shrubs, a veggie garden and even trees. If you have flower pots at home, SEE EVE,
Eve said to make sure they have drainage holes and to use good potting soil. Watering regularly is vital so keep an eye on the weekly rainfall and supplement when necessary. If you’re planning on planting any trees, best do it in the spring or fall, and give it regular water for the first two summers to ensure established roots. The best time to prune trees is in the winter –all those leaves blocking your view are gone! She suggests you check out the Michigan Gardeners page on Facebook, which has 30,000 members and is a great place to get questions answered for free. An additional source of information can be accessed by going to www.migarden.msu.edu or you can call their toll-free hotline at 888-6783464.All the work we do in establishing gardens of any sort benefits not only us, but the animal and insect species in our area. Keep in mind that if we didn’t have insects, we wouldn’t have food! Adding trees to your property improves your investment and helps the ongoing efforts to mitigate the drastic climate issues we’re facing.
Another very interesting source of information about a trend in reforesting cities is the work of the Japanese botanist and professor, Dr. Akira Miyawaki, who since 1980 has managed to regenerate depleted urban forests within a 20-year span, instead of the usual 200. More information on this vital process can be found at https://urbanforests.com/miyawaki-method/. Please be sure to tell your City mayor about this link. from page 16

Some I’ve seen feature chimineas for warmth that extends conversation areas well into colder weather. What a perfect tie-in to the Social District idea.*Small outdoor performing arts stages that encourage more community gatherings, that bring more people together in a town center or park to watch a mini play, listen to small musical acts, or give people a voice if they want such a chance. It is a powerful, unifying element, and again, especially if coordinated with the Social District idea.
* Flowers wherever they can be hung to create lushness and beauty. This requires a budget, which could easily be funded and maintained by asking for citizen and business support, because everyone loves flowers.
I see these things as I go about and love them. I admire the civic initiative, the decisions made to make these things more than just ideas, and how darn cool they look in city after city, including the two I saw out west. The absence of these things is routine. It is much more normal to not see them. But when they are there, they make a difference, and indicate that those cities are examples of residents, businesses, non-profits, schools and government coming together to make sure that everyone gets the message that small is magic, and it doesn’t happen by accident. Localism, folks, is a lot more than just supporting local businesses. It is about making our towns irresistible, and ours together.
The magic of small, the power of vision and unity PETERROSE 734.552.3344 mariastarkeyrealtor@gmail.com mariasellsdownriver.com MARIA STARKEY AGENT OF THE MONTH 9105 MACOMB ST. GROSSE ILE MI 48138 AUGUST
When I see these things during trips near and far, I try to remember them and share them. It is not just unique shops and restaurants that ignite me, it is the towns themselves. Such towns are absolute magnets to other businesses that want to be a part of it all. Such towns find ways, together, to create such magnets. To what, pray tell, do I refer? Well, there are many, but here are a few examples, in no particular order of importance as I see it:
* Murals on blank walls of buildings or structures that are completely ignored. Allowing artists to show their talent and turn boring space into things that amuse or stun with their beauty requires the decision to be such a town. They also relieve store owners from having to maintain those blank walls that cost money to keep from looking decrepit.Onegreat example: Somebody painted the walls of the defunct overhead train track at King and Jefferson; it looks infinitely more interesting, and so much nicer. I love it.
* Banners on light poles that market and publicize specific events, or “shop local” encouragement, or seasonal images, or high school spirit, or highlight the non-profits that are part of the heart and should of a city. There are a lot of reasons to have such a constant and creative force for unity and bragging.
The simultaneous utilization of regulatory signage that keeps bikes away from where they should not be ridden. Actually being “green” can’t be just a vague concept and more cities should be the leadership.
* Social Districts work (look at Wyandotte), and are a real, marketable advantage over cities that have not enacted that simple policy. Strong, vibrant signage throughout the city that advises of the strict boundaries (by law), and calls out the participants by name, with support from those businesses and others that participate for the vibe it creates to raise all boats.
My wife, Janelle, and I got a chance to get away for a few days in August to attend the wedding of Christ Doulos’ son Nick. Christ and Carole and Janelle and I got to hang out a bit, out Oregon-way, in Sisters and Bend, and of course, you know what I did as I went about out yonder.Partof my takeaway
* Wayfinding sites that are updateable that help visitors find what they might be looking for. A map and a listing of businesses and parks and other points of interest, where one can see their choices for restaurants, for instance, is helpful and can be an interesting feature in design, in and of itself.*The encouragement of bicycle use, through cool parking stations.
* Artistic crosswalks that engage pedestrian crossers, sometimes a different theme for every such intersection on main streets. Accomplished with paint!
Some of them are subtle and quirky, that make residents and visitors alike seek out more that might amuse and/ or stimulate the senses.
* Permanent bricked conversation areas are awesome enablers that provide seating arrangements that foster such an idea. Several of them spread around the downtown area.

guessedpopulatedthoseexperiencingwasdowntowns,by–youit–local and independent stores and restaurants galore.Sisters is a town of 2,709, while Bend is just under 100,000. But it’s never just the shops and restaurants that grab my attention in such an exploration of them-there cities. A huge part of the equation is the ways city governments and their departments integrate with local businesses and visionaries to create spaces that work to such an extent that without even focusing on it, people feel comfortable and energized and interested.Nomatter where I’ve been – and I’ve been to lots of towns – it is the combination of the elements of a city that generates “cool places to be.” There is almost no end to the things I’ve seen that make me covet and admire.Allof them create a sense of space that is compelling. All of them make people want to come back and explore more and appreciate more in their towns.Allof them are things to emulate, stimulate the imagination, and inspire creative thought. All of them are examples of possibilities to be executed in the towns in which we live, play, eat and drink and lead. Some of them create fundamental change, highly impactful and functional.

For those who like to nibble and nosh, the place to be on Aug. 9 was downtown Wyandotte, where The Southern Wayne County Regional Chamber this year held its annual Taste of Downriver dining event. The come-hungry event was presented by PNC Bank and, as usual, it drew thousands of Downriver residents anxious to try some specialties from many of Downriver’s finest eateries. Residents plunked down their money to try items from Major Biddle, The Vault, Mr. Nick’s, Joe’s Hamburgers and many, many others. Based on the looks on faces of the party goers, The Taste of Downriver was against a huge success.

The Grosse Ile Alliance for the Arts honored Pam Frucci at the last concert in August for her 20 years of organizing the Grosse Ile Sunday Concerts on the Commons. Pam was responsible for finding, contacting and scheduling the entertainers, for the lovely Sunday evening concerts.
Grosse Ile Art Alliance says: Thanks, Pam Joan Hemsworth (standing, left), Bill Morreau, Gloria Florin, Madeleine Jones and Judith Danziger, Martha Butler. Seated are Pam and Jack Frucci.
Many people - most, perhaps - go to an optometrist, get an eye exam and then follow the lady in the white coat over to the wall of frames and pick out a new set of glasses. The story ends with the customer paying way more than he or she ever expected. If that pretty much describes you, Bob Schmittou says there is something you should know: He can save you money, maybe lots of money. Schmittou, a proud military veteran, owns New Eyes Optical, located on 1616 Ford Avenue, right at 16th Street in Wyandotte. There are no doctors at New Eyes, just lots of frames and Schmittou, who can get you into fashionable new glasses for a lot less than all of the other chains and franchises out there. Just bring your eyeglass prescription to him and see what kind of magic he can work for you. “I am kind of like what the pharmacy is to your doctor,” Schmittou said. “Your doctor writes you a prescription. He doesn’t try to sell you the drugs. You go to the pharmacy. The same is true with us. You bring us a prescription and we will fill it.”
Schmittou said he has over 1,300 frames in his building and can make arrangements to get others if customers come in with a specific brand or style in mind. For sunglass lovers, Schmittou said he has the largest selection of Ray Ban and Oakley sunglasses in the area. If you come in, you will deal with Schmittou himself. He and his wife Pam are the only employees. Schmittou does the fitting of the eyewear, and Pam orders frames and keeps the shop looking fresh by arranging the frame displays and decorating. So, if you are in the market for new glasses, would like a little personal attention and a really low price, give Schmittou a call at 313-587-4204, drop an email at neweyesoptical2012@gmail. com or contact them through their Facebook page, Facebook.com/neweyesoptical.

New Eyes Optical does not accept insurance, but their low prices mean that is often not an issue.Schmittou has been in the eyeglass game for a long time. He enlisted in the Army after graduating from Lincoln Park High School and Uncle Sam sent him to school to learn how to make eyeglasses. The secret is written across the landscape in the plants where the bees collect nectar. Because the taste and coloration of honey can change depending on what mixture of flowers bees are collecting nectar from, we can end up with many different types of honey.Toharvest honey, beekeepers take the frames with honey-filled combs from the hives to a commercial kitchen. There, the capping on the honeycomb is taken off with a hot knife. Next, the frame is placed into a machine that spins the frame to get the honeycombs to release the honey. Lastly, the honey is prepared and placed into jars. Instead of discarding the empty frames, they are kept until the next harvest, so that the bees don’t have to rebuild the wax comb. This saves the bees time, energy and resources.
Jazmyn Bernard
At Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge, the honeybees share the beautiful prairies with all sorts of different pollinators, all working hard to pollinate the many different flowers in our environment. To support our pollinators, we must keep a diverse and healthy habitat for these important wildlife to survive.
Did you know that honey bees throughout the United States produce millions of pounds of honey each year?
Over the last year, Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge has had two honeybee hives in the prairie. Currently, there are about 60,000 bees in each hive. This large number is due to the queen bee in both beehives laying up to 2,500 new eggs each day. An increase in the number of bees in the hives means more female worker bees to go out into the prairie to collect nectar for honey. Our honeybees can produce hundreds of pounds of honey that can benefit both the beehives and people! We leave between 80 to 100 pounds of honey in each hive for the bees to feed on during the winter months and can harvest the excess honey for human consumption without harming the bees. So far, we’ve harvested 250 pounds of honey!Allthe honey harvesting is done by Bees in the D, a non-profit organization and partner of the refuge. This organization installed our beehives in May 2021, does routine beehive checkups and harvests the honey from ourHowhives.is the honey harvested? Bees in the D maintains 70 hives across the city of Detroit and southeast Michigan. With these many locations, beekeepers can collect all sorts of different flavors of honey. Bees in the D has a special way of harvesting and preparing the honey they collect, because they do not mix the honey they harvest. This allows them to harvest a variety of honey that comes in different colors and has different tastes. How can honey be so diverse?

Six Grosse Ile Girls Scouts recently participated in a special microchip event at TAILS and were honored for their efforts.
The work at TAILS included, making care packages for new pet owners, planning and executing the microchip clinic and making a giveaway gift for the clinic itself (they engineered a new type of bandana for this one!). Roberta from TAILS was so happy to have the help! She talked with the girls about what was needed and helped them with making those requests happen. Once a girl scout leader herself, Roberta, seemed to have a passion for what the girls are and were trying to do.

More than 25 cats and dogs were microchipped by the staff at TAILS. The Girl Scouts from the troop participated in this project and all were awarded the coveted Bronze Award by the Girl Scouts of Southeast Michigan.
Six Grosse Ile girl scouts earn Bronze Award
Now, the girls in the troop are deciding whether or not to participate in the Silver Award. The Silver award is even bigger with 60 hours per girl in groups no bigger than four.
The entire project was an effort by the six girls in the troop to meet requirements like, 20 hours of volunteer work for a community organization, planning the work, determining what the work would be so it has a lasting impact and executing a
plan to complete the work.
The next step after that is the Gold Award, which is one of the most esteemed awards in Girl Scouts and on-par with the Eagle Scout award in Boy Scouts. Those girls who pursue this award will be able to put it on their college application and resume for the rest of their careers.

I also found out a creative solution to a problem she and her neighbors at the Island Estates had during a power outage last month. With no way to keep perishable food in a refrigerator or freezer, they cooked a gigantic feast and joined together in Jan’s condo to enjoy a neighborly pot luck meal!

The win over Richard led into the Huron League and home-openers for the Red Devils, and while the game against SMCC was no offensive showcase, the Devils did enough to send the Falcons home lugging their second loss of the season.
Symons capped the drive with a 16-yard scoring pass to Proctor. It was the first of two touchdown passes caught by Proctor, who had a 14-yard TD reception in the fourth quarter that gave Grosse Ile a 20-0 lead at the time.
Proctor and Pizzo eachhad 13 tackles in the game and Eian Rush had 10. Pizzo also had another pass interception.TheRedDevils were on the road for the first time this year on Sept. 9 at Milan. Grosse Ile had just 216 yards from scrimmage, but the team found the end zone three times and that was enough. All of the game scoring was done in the first half. Grosse Ile led 14-7 at the end of the first quarter and 21-14 at the end of the second. Grosse Ile got one rushing touchdown, one passing touchdown and a touchdown from their special teams. Kelems caught a 10-yard scoring pass from Symons, Pizzo ran in from 20-yards out for another score and, on the most exciting play of the night, Swick returned a kickoff 90 yards for a score. Symons finished the night 12-for20 passing for 130 yards and had no interceptions. Like he did against Richard, Fraczek carried the ball 28 times, this time gaining 66 yards.

HANk MINCkIEwICZ It’s been a good start to the 2022 season for the Grosse Ile football team, which just two games into the year has already matched last year’s total win Veterantotal.coach John Bodner’s team opened the season with a solid 20-7 win over non-league Gabriel Richard on Aug. 26 and backed that up by beating Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central 21-14 on Sept.1. Last year the Devils won just two games – beating Richard and Flat Rock – and were beaten 41-6 by SMCC.Inthe season-opening win over Richard, Grosse Ile scored two touchdowns in the first quarter and held the Pioneers scoreless until late in theEiangame.Rush intercepted Richard quarterback Nick Wisniewski on the third play of the game and gave the ball to his team on the Richard 43yard line. It led to the first Grosse Ile score of the year. Tyler Fraczek, who has been a workhorse for the team so far this season, carried most of the load and scored from two yards out. Hunter Proctor’s PAT made it 7-0. Fraczek, who scored just once against the Pioneers, finished the night with 140 rushing yards on 28 carries. After stopping Richard on downs, Grosse Ile took off on its best drive of the night, a 13-play beauty that covered 97 yards. Keys to the march were a 21-yard Trais Symons-to-Matt Pizzo pass, an 18-yard run by Fraczek and a 15-yard pass interference penalty against Richard.
For the night, Symons was 13-for24 for 150 yards and the two scores. His stat line was marred by four interceptions, but they did not come back to hurt the Red Devils.
Defensively for Grosse Ile Brody Kelems and Pizzo each had 10 tackles and Swick, Pizzo and Eian Rush each had pass interceptions.

The host Pirates scored a goal in the first half and added one in the second on the way to a hardfought 2-0 victory over the Red Devils. Denin Oglecevac netted both goals for Riverview, which has played a ton of games already this young season and improved to 9-1 overall and 2-0 in the Huron League with the win over the Devils.
Riverview applied pressure all game loing, but for the most part, keeper James Duke and the Grosse Ile defense stood tall. In the second half, the Devils came out stronger and were able to generate a couple of scoring chances.OneGrosse Ile opportunity came in the 53rd minute when a shot got past Bucs keeper Jakob Leblanc and slowly rolled into the post. Players from both sides swarmed for the rebound. However, Riverview defenders kept Grosse Ile from getting another shot off and Leblanc eventually grabbed the ball.In the 59th minute, a shot from the Bucs’ Jakob Rose sailed just over the crossbar and soon after another Riverview shot hit the post.
