n March 15th, Grosse Ile came together to mark a milestone that few are privileged to reach: the remarkable 101st birthday of Joseph P. Berkey. The community of the local VFW post, which proudly bears Berkey’s name, organized a heartwarming event to honor his lifetime of service and dedication.

Barry Van Engelen, alongside Quartermaster Gary Latendresse, orchestrated a touching drive-by parade with the assistance of the 4th District VFW riders. As the procession arrived, the air filled with excitement and gratitude. What awaited Berkey was beyond expectation: a card adorned with heartfelt messages from hundreds of veterans and generous donations totaling an impressive $1,001.00.

This outpouring of love and appreciation was a fitting tribute to a man whose life story is woven with threads of resilience and courage. Joseph Berkey not only served his country in the Navy during World War II but also overcame the daunting challenges of surviving the torpedoing of the USS Wasp. Even at the remarkable age of 100, he faced and conquered cancer, demonstrating his unwavering strength and determination.

For Berkey’s daughter, AnnMarie Vis, and granddaughters, Michelle and Kele Todd, this celebration was a moment of immense pride and gratitude. They, along with countless others, have been inspired by his steadfast dedication to his country, his community, and his family.

Our Director and Assistant Director have taken the time to personally hire and train all staff so that they are a perfect fit to provide all participants with a safe and entertaining environment. Their keen ability to coach and teach makes way for an engaging day from start to finish. Joining in on these diverse activities encourages youth to step out of their comfort zones, discover passions, and develop confidence as they learn new skills and overcome challenges.

Our camps run all week, Monday through Friday, from 9:00AM to 4:00PM. Registration for camps are on a weekto-week basis, meaning you can pick and choose what weeks work best for your family. In addition, depending on the sport or activity, we will be utilizing various locations on the Island for a change of scenery and hands-on learning! From Centennial Farms to Water’s Edge, to nature walks through Grosse Ile’s lush greenery, we want our campers to fully immerse themselves in nature

OTHER TOWNSHIP UPDATES:

The Board passed the Annual Budget for Fiscal Year 2024-2025. It is important to note that this budget has no new millage money in it. This is due to the recently defeated police millage that 60% of Grosse Ile residents voted against. The Police Commission and the Police Department are to discuss the future plans of the Department with the Board moving forward.

The Public Service Commission is in the midst of planning discussions for this year’s road work. As of now, Ferry Road will be completed; other projects have yet to be determined.

The Grosse Ile Toll Bridge project is moving forward. We have requested our consultants to give the Board all the information needed in order to come to a final decision. This is a very complex process that will have both short and long term effects on our community. It is important to do our due diligence and only act once we are confident we are making the right choice for Grosse Ile. Spring has sprung, and, although the weather isn’t fully cooperating yet, be sure to enjoy it as we look forward to another summer on our beautiful Island.

GIHS community gives back

The GIHS community has once again shown its generosity and compassion. An astounding $7,166 was raised to benefit two deserving organizations. GIHS was thrilled to announce that they had the privilege of presenting checks totaling $3,583 each to both Downriver Foster Closet and Detroit Dogs Rescue.

A huge shoutout to the amazing students and supportive community for coming together for a great cause. Your contributions will make a significant impact on the lives of those in need, both human and furry friends alike. Thank you for making a difference!

Which plan do you need?

Time to clear up the confusion about Estate Planning ... The following definitions lack legal precision, but makes it easier to get a clear picture of what may be needed in your case.

■ Will – letter of intent of where you want your personal property to go – or not go.

■ Living Will – Documents your wishes during your final days including final healthcare choices and possibly your burial wishes.

■ Trust – This is a “company” that you start, and you become the CEO, “Trustee” and “Settlor.” The company outlives you, but continues to manage your assets as if you were alive by the successor CEO – whom you designate.

■ Power of Attorney – Financial and Healthcare – you need both – the first so someone can pay your bills, the second, sometimes called a Patient Advocate, designates someone to make “hallway at the hospital” decisions to take the stress off the family.

■ Ladybird Deed – probably the best thing that has happened to owning a home. I love these deeds – you grant yourself a life estate – in your own property - but retain the power to sell or borrow against the property. If you do not sell before you pass, this “springs” the house out of your estate, and your heirs have instant ownership, subject to any mortgage or taxes owed or similar.

Again, this is just a general description of the more popular terms – no one choice is a “silver bullet” but depending on how your estate gets planned out you can expedite a clean and clear process for the assets you worked a lifetime to save. Gabriel Richard to Perform “The Phantom of the Opera”

Gabriel Richard Catholic High School will present Andrew Lloyd Weber’s Broadway classic, “The Phantom of the Opera,” on April 19, 20 and 21 at the school’s David Hartmann Auditorium.

The play, adapted from Gaston Leroux’s 1910 novel, tells the story of a beautiful and talented soprano who becomes the obsession of a masked musical genius living in the catacombs beneath the Paris Opera House. Junior Everett Knapik stars as the Phantom, and senior Sasha Murphy and freshman Natalia Shadik will split time as his young protege, Christine Daae. Other principal characters include freshman Cole Cornett (Raoul), senior Ella Bush (Carlotta Guidicelli), junior Brett Byrd (Monsieur Firmin), junior Aviana Gholdoian (Madame Andre), senior Ava Abrahamson (Madame Giry), freshman Logan Knapik (Meg Giry) and junior Brooks Natt (Piangi).

The play is directed by Brendan Delaney, along with music director Brittney Dimmitt and choreographer Shivonne Delaney. Together, the trio have directed several musicals at GR over the past four years, including “Into the Woods,” “Little Shop of Horrors,” and “Once Upon a Mattress.”

Brendan Delaney said he selected “Phantom of the Opera” as this year’s spring musical to showcase the vocal growth of the cast, as well as their exceptional dancing and acting skills. With such classics as “All I Ask of You” and “The Music of the Night,” the play is mostly sung, which can be daring to pull off

Murphy, whose role as Christine marks her sixth production on stage at GR, said the opportunity to portray the innocent soprano is both challenging and rewarding.

“With so many complex musical numbers, this is probably the most demanding role I’ve ever played,” Murphy said, “but I am excited to bring the classic to stage.”

In addition to lively music, the production also features elaborate costumes and props, including a crystal chandelier that “crashes” down upon the opera and a gondola that appears to glide along the water.

“I am excited for our students to provide the audience with an entertaining show that all involved will be proud of,” Delaney said.

Tickets to attend the performances are $10 for students, $15 for general admission, and $20 for VIP seating, and may be purchased online at gabrielrichard.org. Tickets will also be sold at the box office before each performance.

Greenway/Open Space Committee annual report

At the March 5, 2024 meeting of the Grosse Ile Township Greenway/Open Space Committee, the members adopted the Annual Report to the community. The results are as follows:

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES FOR 2023-2024

Continued monitoring of all Open Space areas and maintenance of existing trailways in the Wildlife Sanctuary, Island/Ferry Woods, Parkway Woods, Meridian Woods, and Centennial Farm Open Space.

Monitoring Open Space preserves and trails is an ongoing responsibility of the Greenways/Open Space Committee. We respond in a timely manner to citizen notifications concerning encroachment, tree falls on trails, or hazardous conditions in Open Space tracts impacting private property. Further, we have expanded our trail system to include the new Ferry-Gage pathway, as well as the East River Connector to the main trail in the Meridian Woods. We are working with the Township and Eagle Scouts to prepare an access point to the Thorofare Canal in the west side of the Lowrie Woods area.

Conduct two Dump the Junk, Find a Treasure events in Spring and Fall, 2023.

Dump the Junk, Find a Treasure continues to be a win-win situation for Township citizens and Open Space. The spring event saw 555 vehicles at our May event, with 294 tallied in our September Dump the Junk. Illegal dumping and trash has been significantly reduced in Open Space preserves.

Launch “Adopt a Trail, Adopt a Plot” and “Friends of Grosse Ile Natural Areas” programs for increased community involvement.

The Greenways/Open Space Committee has not yet formally launched the “Adopt a Trail, Adopt a Plot” program. However, we have increased community

involvement in working with private citizens and the Pullman Corporation in a bridge restoration project in the Meridian Woods over the drainage ditch off Heather Lane. We also have acquired a section of the bicycle bridge formerly over the Thorofare Canal for repurposing in the Meridian Woods. Additionally, the Committee has accepted composite benches which were originally on Macomb for placement in the Open Space trail areas.

Re-engage the schools, K-12 in environmental awareness and increased involvement in creative use of Open Space areas.

The Greenway/Open Space Committee has expanded the school liaison position to a School Liaison Team. Zoe Loveday, Alicia Shelton, and Kaitlyn Robinson will serve in that capacity, with two of the three members serving a full calendar year. We are seeking greater student involvement for K-12 in open space clean-up efforts, Earth Day programs, environmental awareness, and other volunteer opportunities. The School Liaison Team is assisting with our Open Space signage assessment project.

While the new Ferry-Gage trail and East River Connector have rudimentary parking areas at the trail heads, a more formal, permanent place to park has yet to be realized. One of the goals for 2024-2025 is to examine unobtrusive parking for all trail heads served by Open Space.

Greenway/Open Space Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of each month at 7:00PM in the Merle Solomon Board Room at 9601 Groh Road. There are no meetings during the months of July, August, and December.

Team Rubicon coming to Grosse Ile

During the weekend of April 26-28th, you may see a number of volunteers in gray shirts working in the Grosse Ile Nature and Land Conservancy properties or the protected Open Space domains throughout the township.

Don’t be alarmed and take to social media with wild rumors of an invasion or a local version of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. They are members of Team Rubicon, “a veteran-led humanitarian organization, built to serve global communities before, during, and after disasters and crises.” Most notably, they assist FEMA (the Federal Emergency Management Agency) in disaster relief.

On that weekend, 20-25 Team Rubicon volunteers and support staff will be conducting training operations in Chainsaw Proficiency Development. They will be clearing and sawing trees which have been already marked by the Nature Conservancy and Greenways/Open Space committee. Team Rubicon does all their work on the ground and does not climb trees or conduct aerial cutting.

Grosse Ile Nature & Land Conservancy

Stewardship Chair, Peter Kantz, explains, “This is a win-win situation for our natural areas and Team Rubicon. They use community projects such as ours for training volunteers and sharpening their skills. They like to cut up fallen trees and generally work on the weekends on projects that simulate disaster response.”

According to Gary Gamble, a locally based Team Rubicon leader, “In 2023 our teams served communities all over the world. From an earthquake in Morocco to a typhoon in Guam. We expanded rebuild operations in Kentucky, and provided hurricane response in Florida after Hurricane Idalia hit as a Category 4 storm.”

Gamble continues, “Our volunteers come from all over Michigan. It’s the local communities that need us most. When disasters strike, our people can make the most impact, the closest to home. Our common trait? ‘We’re built to serve.’”

Since Team Rubicon members will be working on Grosse Ile from April 26-28th, the Grosse Ile Presbyterian Church has graciously agreed to house the volunteers overnight at the church.

Winter season comes to a close for Devil teams

The Grosse Ile girls basketball team had a solid season in 2023-24, winning more than they lost and beating solid teams like Wyandotte, Divine Child, and Flat Rock along the way.

The Devils also played the Huron League’s top teams – champ Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central and runner-up Riverview tough. The Devils lost two games to the champion Kestrels by a combined five points, falling 41-40 and 49-44. Against their archrival Pirates, Grosse Ile was even better, losing 45-43 once in regulation and once in overtime.

But there was one mountain Grosse Ile could not climb this year – Carleton Airport.

The Jets, who tied for third in the Huron League this year, beat Grosse Ile twice during the regular season.

The two league rivals then fought their way to the Division 2 district championship game at Summit Academy where they met for a third time.

And the Jets made it clear they were not giving up their mastery of the Island team, beating Grosse Ile 64-46 to win the district championship. It was Airport’s third win of the year over Grosse Ile and in each game the margin of victory grew, Airport won the first meeting 56-50 and the second 52-43 before winning the district championship game by 18 points. The berth in the district finals was Grosse Ile third in the last four years. They won a district in 2021 and lost to Airport in 2022. Last year the Red Devils were bounced from the district in the semifinals 49-48 by Flat Rock.

GROSSE ILE LEADER IS COACH OF THE YEAR

The Competitive Cheer Coaches Association of Michigan has named Grosse Ile coach Angela Raithel the Michigan Division 3 Coach of the Year.

Raithel led the Red Devils to the 2024 Huron League competitive cheerleading championship, to a Division 3 district championship and to a third-place finish at this year’s state finals.

Under Raithel’s leadership, the past seven seasons have gotten better and better. Grosse Ile won district titles in 2021 and 2022, were Huron League runners-up last year, and reached the state finals in both 2023 and 2024. Raithel was formerly the director of the Allen

Park Bulldogs cheerleading program. The girls from that Bulldog program have gone on to make Allen Park High School a dominant cheerleading team in the state, winning multiple state high school championships.

FOUR WRESTLERS REACH REGIONALS

The resurgent Grosse Ile wrestling team had a solid 2023-24 season and they capped it by winning a Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 3 Team District and sending four wrestlers to the D3 regionals at Hazel Park.

At the team event, hosted by Grosse Ile, the Red Devils scored a forfeit win over Romulus before knocking off Huron League rival Flat Rock 44-27 to win the district title.

Unfortunately for Grosse Ile, the next team up in the playoffs for them was Dundee, the eventual Division 3 team state champ.

The Vikings, who beat Ida 82-0 and Milan 79-0 to win the district they hosted, beat Grosse Ile 80-0 in the first round of regionals, and then beat Lutheran Westland by the same score to secure the regional

championship.

Dundee finally gave up some points in the state quarterfinals round, but not many. The Vikings beat Lake Odessa Lakewood 58-18 in the quarterfinals, Constantine 49-22 in the semifinals and Whitehall 49-20 in the state championship match.

Grosse Ile’s four individual regional qualifiers were John Fox (126 pounds), Sam Vesperman (132 pounds), Zach Zibara (215 pounds) and Carson Pace (285 pounds).

It was just a quick visit to the postseason for the Grosse Ile foursome as none of the four was able to advance to the state meet at Ford Field.

Fox, a junior with a 32-21 record, went 0-2; Vesperman, a junior with a 42-12 mark, pinned Roman Cody of Lutheran Westland in his first match, but got pinned himself in his next two matches;

Zibara, a senior with a 29-11 record, lost his first match, then pinned Brody Lopez of Milan before bowing out; Pace, a senior with a 19-10 record, pinned Andrew Ferrara of Algonac in just 27 seconds, but was then pinned in each of his final two matches.

Get ready for St. James’ rummage sale

The St. James Episcopal Church spring rummage sale is coming!

Mark your calendars for May 2-4, 2024 for the church’s semi-annual “blowout” sale. The event runs on Thursday and Friday from 9:00AM4:00PM and Saturday from 9:00AM12:00PM. Shoppers on Saturday can also find half price items, and the $10.00 “Stuff a Bag” promotion.

Donations for the rummage sale are accepted beginning Wednesday, April 17th. They do NOT accept mattresses, bed or throw pillows, console TVs, very large furniture, old computers, refrigerators, freezers, monitors, treadmills, textbooks, helmets, or car seats. Donors can also ask for a tax receipt for their donated goods.

The St. James rummage sale has been going on for more than 80 years, starting during World War II. The sale has grown exponentially since that time, and has become one of the largest, quality, second-hand shopping experiences in southeastern Michigan.

All proceeds from the sale are distributed among a dozen charitable organizations.

Departments that fill whole rooms in the educational wing or in Galloway Hall include Antiques, Linens, The French Room, The Clothing Boutique, Book Nook, Electronics, Furniture, Music, and more.

Trifecta of events in April planned for spring cleaning

Grosse Ile residents will have a chance to hit the Earth Day Trifecta on two successive weekends coming up this April. The Grosse Ile Kiwanis, Rotary, and Township Greenway/Open Space Committee are offering spring cleaning opportunities all designed to make our little corner of the earth a better place to live, work, and play. For our Green Thumbed citizens who want to get out in the field and join a legion of civic-minded souls, the annual Kiwanis Island Clean-Up kicks off Earth Day celebrations on Saturday, April 20th from 10:00AM12:00PM. Kiwanians and volunteers should gather at the Joe Berkey VFW Post 7310 at 8840 Macomb to get their clean-up assignments. Trash bags, safety vests, and gloves will be provided. The Greenway/Open Space Commission and the Department of Public Services is happy to announce that the popular “Dump the Junk, Find a Treasure” event will be held on Saturday, April 27, 2024 from 9:00AM4:00PM at the DPS yard (8555 Groh Road). The two-fold “Dump the Junk, Find a Treasure” activity is designed to eliminate illegal dumping on Grosse Ile vacant lots or preserved Open Space properties, and to recycle, reuse, or repurpose “slightly used” treasures to those who have a discerning eye.

This event is open to Grosse Ile residents only, and excludes any commercial contractors or refuse haulers. Proof of residency must be shown upon request for admission. For the “Dump the Junk” disposal, dumpsters will be provided by Priority Waste and are available for residents to dispose of items that cannot be picked up through normal curbside pickup.

Acceptable items for disposal include yard waste, large logs, shrubs, wood, building materials such as tile, marble and drywall. Bricks, concrete, or cement blocks are allowed and must be placed in the 20 yard dumpsters.

Unacceptable items include mattresses, couches, trashed furniture, toilets, electronics, televisions, refrigerators, or freezers. Any freon-bearing appliances are not allowed. Additionally, railroad ties or any hazardous waste materials like paints, solvents, or chemicals are prohibited. However, for residents of apartments and condos who do not have access to curbside pick-up through Priority Waste, you will be allowed to bring refuse or furniture for the junk dumpsters only. Apartment or condo residents must be prepared to show proof of residency to the apartment or condominium in which you reside as well.

Fritz Enterprises will provide a dumpster that will take dishwashers, stoves, metal patio furniture, tire rims, and other metal items that can be scrapped.

Pomp’s Tire Service will accept and recycle auto or small trailer tires, provided they are off the rims. No semitruck or commercial tires may be brought to the DPS yard.

For the “Find a Treasure” opportunity, residents can

drop off or pick up gently used furniture, like old tables and chairs, end tables, bikes, scooters, working household items, and other artistic collectibles.

And while you’re dumping your junk or gathering treasures, that same day (April 27th) the Grosse Ile Rotary is sponsoring a “Free Community Shred Day” from 9:00AM-12:00PM. The shredding truck will be parked in the service road, east of the Island Athletics tennis center, just adjacent to the Dump the Junk venue, convenient for one-stop shopping, er. . .shredding.

The fully confidential shredding will be done by Pure Data Services, a local recycling company owned by longtime Grosse Ile residents, Russ and Katie Chambers. Your documents and information will be securely destroyed and then responsibly recycled.

So, mark your calendars. Time to do your spring cleaning, get rid of the clutter, and minimize your life. And, in the long run, keep Grosse Ile clean.

Residents and visitors of Grosse Ile are invited to embark on a journey through the island’s rich history with the unveiling of the new “History Walk” at the Historical Society property, located at the corner of Grosse Ile Parkway and East River Road. This captivating timeline comprises seven panels adorned with accompanying photos, offering a comprehensive overview of Grosse Ile’s evolution from its earliest days to the present.

Recognizing the constraints of limited museum hours, the Historical Society envisioned a display that would allow the community to explore the

island’s history at their leisure. The History Walk serves as an accessible and engaging alternative, providing a glimpse into Grosse Ile’s past for all to enjoy.

To ensure accessibility for all members of the community, the nearby brick walkway has been leveled, and a concrete semi-circular path has been installed adjacent to the panels. This thoughtful design allows individuals using wheelchairs, walkers, or strollers to navigate the displays with ease, ensuring that everyone can partake in this enriching experience.

The realization of this project was made possible through the generous support of the Grosse Ile Educational Foundation, whose funding facilitated the purchase and installation of the timeline. Additionally, GLC Lawn, Landscaping, & Snow Removal contributed their expertise, enhancing the beauty of the surroundings.

2024 Trenton and Downriver Area Soroptimists’ annual awards banque

Six women were recognized with monetary awards from the Trenton and Downriver Area Soroptimists for their ambition and contribution to their communities. The awards banquet was held on February 27th at the Grecian Center in Southgate. Some of the essay judges were in attendance to celebrate with the winners. The applicants were evaluated on a set criteria and essays that assessed their contributions to women and society.

Soroptimist is an international organization of

almost 1,500 clubs in nineteen countries for and by dedicated women who use their collective power to help other women and girls transform their physical, mental, and emotional lives and the lives of their families. Trenton and Downriver Area Soroptimist is a volunteer group that offers service by way of fundraising and donations, public awareness/educational programs, and hands-on assistance; as well as presenting yearly monetary awards to individuals to help support and further their future. These women give their time and talents to local food pantries, Vista Maria, First Step, Sparrow Project, Stanford House, Alternatives for Girls, and to area women’s health institutions. They host annual charity fundraisers and programs such as “Save the Girls” motorcycle ride, “Save the Girls” charity golf outing, “Battle for Freedom,” and the “Dream It, Be It” program for adolescent girls.

Pirates run away with Division 1 district title

The Riverview basketball team, which has won 16 games this season, could manage no better than

fourth place in the Huron League behind unbeaten Flat Rock, Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central and Huron.

After winning a district title in rather handy fashion, the Bucs and their fans probably wish they could have spent the season in the Downriver League.

Riverview was sent to Allen Park this year for districts and the tournament field was all Downriver League teams, except for the Bucs, who ultimately prevailed.

On March 1, Riverview beat Southgate Anderson 61-40 to claim the district championship. Anderson had beaten Wyandotte Roosevelt and Lincoln Park to reach the finals. Riverview, which had a first-round bye, beat Allen Park, which had defeated Taylor.

With the district title in hand, Riverview advanced to the regional round of play where they faced Downriver League co-champ Woodhaven. Detroit Cass Tech and River Rouge are on the other side of the regional bracket.

All the regional games were played after the Riverview Register’s press deadline.

The district championship game was a tight affair for two quarters, Riverview jumped out to an early lead and maintained it throughout the first half, but Anderson was always just a step back, lurking.

Riverview led 15-10 after one period and 29-23 at halftime, but the Bucs stepped on the gas in the third quarter and the Titans were not able to respond.

Riverview’s offense was pretty much clicking from the opening tip. Caleb DiBrano got loose for several easy baskets and layups and the Bucs threatened to get away early. DiBrano finished the quarter with eight points.

New city council member appointed

On February 1st, Ed Gawlik Jr. was appointed as the newest member of the Southgate City Council. This appointment follows the January resignation of Councilman Bill Colovos. Per Southgate City Charter, City Council must fill the vacancy before the lapse of the current term.

The City Council established an applicant pool process open to the public with guidelines that required the applicant to have lived in Southgate for at least 30 days and could not be in default on any payments to the City at the time of submission.

Each applicant would then be interviewed by City Council.

Nine applications were received, however, only four were qualified contenders as outlined by the prior stated guidelines. Of the four applicants, Ed Gawlik Jr. was the only one to be interviewed as all other applicants were absent. Based on his application, supporting documents, and interview, City Council concurred that he was the top choice overall. A motion was made to appoint Gawlik and it carried unanimously.

On February 5th, Gawlik was officially sworn in as a Southgate City Councilman by City Clerk Jan Ferencz. Gawlik, a resident of Southgate for 37 years, has a long history of both City and school district involvement. His volunteerism and leadership experience includes 12 years as a Southgate Band Booster, 12 years of service on the Southgate School Board, including 5 years as Board President, and most recently, 6 years as a member of the Southgate Planning Commission, with the last 3 years serving as Chairman. He has also

volunteered throughout the years at community events, such as Heritage Days, and for non-profit organizations, like the Gibraltar Food Pantry.

Anderson cheerleaders qualify for regionals

It was not a vintage year for the typically strong Southgate Anderson competitive cheerleading team, but although the Titans finished an uncharacteristic fifth in the league meet, the team did bounce back at districts, where they were one of the top four teams and thus qualified for the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 2 regionals

Competing at the MHSAA district hosted by Ypsilanti-Lincoln High School, the Titans squared off against a tough field that included eventual district champ Carleton Airport and state powerhouse Gibraltar Carlson.

Carlson held a pretty significant lead over the field after the first round and an even bigger lead after the second, but Airport, on the strength of a monster final round, roared into the lead and captured the district crown.

Anderson, meanwhile, was solidly in third place throughout much of the competition, but the Titans had a subpar final round and Riverview was able to pass the Titans for third place.

Carlson had 465.28 points heading into the final round. Airport had 454.38, Anderson had 441.1 and Riverview had 434.06.

Trenton’s own version of spring cleaning

When many people around Trenton think of “Spring Cleaning,” they think about the Citywide Garage Sale (which will be held the weekend of May 18-19, by the way). But this year, our spring cleaning around town involves a much bigger lift

than finally getting those shelves in the garage cleaned off or some old furniture from the basement brought to the curb. For us, we are laser focused on getting the demolition and cleanup work done at both the former Riverside Hospital site and former DTE Trenton Channel power plant.

By the time that this article goes to print, my hope is that the last of the buildings will be down at the Riverside hospital site and, while demolition and cleanup will continue well through spring and summer at the DTE site, the “stacks” will be down, and major structures imploded.

In advance, DTE removed all hazardous materials, verified by third party state inspectors. Air monitoring took place, and while shifts in winds aren’t much of a factor, severe weather can be, which was monitored on the day of demolition. High power misting machines were used to mitigate dust from leaving the site and clouds dissipated

quickly.

“We’ve worked with Dykon Explosive Demolition on the Conners Creek demo, this is what they do and are the best,” assures Leo from Independence Excavating. “This procedure is the safest way to do it, it’s controlled and lessens the impact on the community.”

The Trenton community has been vocal about how to best serve the community, and the City Council has been listening. In December of 2020, Council approved the “Waterfront Revitalization” zoning code for former industrial waterfront areas, including DTE’s. Since then, various studies by MSU and U of M graduate students offered renditions of how to repurpose the land which inspired discussions with DTE.

Wyandotte girls close out fine season

The Wyandotte Roosevelt girls basketball team finished up its finest season in years on March 8, when the Bears fell 45-43 in a heartbreaker to Riverview in the finals of the Michigan High School Athletic Association district tournament at Allen Park High School.

The district championship game saw two of Downrvier’s more solid teams battling each other. Riverview, which was second in the Huron League, came into the game with a 17-4 record. Roosevelt, the third place team in the Downriver League behind Trenton and Woodhaven, came into the game with a 16-7 mark.

The clubs delivered a great game, with an outcome that was uncertain all night long.

This publication does not just happen by sorcery

The Grosse Ile Grand was the first venture of the Go Big enterprise that now includes four other Downriver publications. This is article 82, and that’s how long ago The Grand began. First of all, that’s really hard for me to understand. Time really and truly IS accelerating. 6 years, 10 months ago. Gone, in what feels like a flash. Wheeeee!

Along the way, Chelsea and Willow Tree have been real-life examples of the power of localism, by consistently investing in the family of publications that we helped grow to five papers, each of which serves one of five specific communities that otherwise have no mouthpiece, no publications at all that are all about those communities.

We all know how advertising works, of course, but sometimes it does help to spell it out clearly. The advertisers in any marketing venture are what enable the news to be published. No advertisers, no papers, no news. So having been a part of these stillnew publications, I have to tell you that I’m really glad we have helped. We have been part of the reason Go Big has not just eked by, but has grown and has further growth in its future. My stores can’t ALWAYS advertise here, but when we do, we are indeed acting as [art of the circle that keeps everything going.

Never lose sight of the fact that all five of the Go Big papers are part of a local and independent business that serves our region. They are in the exact same genre of business that I write so consistently about, meaning that the ownership is independent (not part of a big, corporate conglomerate) and locally owned (the owners live in the region they serve).

This nearly guarantees that these businesses are connected and engaged. We don’t live in Nairobi, or, as my mother used to say, East Cupcake. We live here. We spend our incomes HERE. Supporting these businesses, therefore, is more than just getting what we want for any given product or service.

In my opinion, we all do ourselves a big disservice by not thinking the process through.

Years ago, I was President of the now-defunct Wyandotte Business Association. I read Big Box Swindle by Stacy Mitchell. It put a spotlight on Walmart in particular, and their heavily damaging tactics as they expanded into towns across America. Mind you, this was not then or now an independent business, but a NYSE corporation, and the mantra - - - the rallying cry - - - as they entered each market was a declared mission to put every business that could compete with them OUT of business. So that

the mom-and-pop grocery store, or the florist, or hardware store that had been there for generations were in the crosshairs of one of the most predatory machines in history. In many cases, the cities they located in had competed with other nearby cities to get Walmart to locate in their city, and tax breaks had been offered. Tax breaks given to BIG so as to put SMALL put of business.

The book is still available, find it through Brooks Books in Wyandotte or through the website IndieBound.com. It is a depressing, eye-opening examination. But I digress. The book ended with examples of cities with local and independent businesses that were smart enough to band together to create a larger entity through which to fight back. That’s what electrified me. The idea of getting our Association to try harder to be a united front, and to market ourselves as the superior shopping area was compelling to me. It still is.
