Grosse Ile Police Department Honored

T On Tuesday, June 6 a man from Southgate backed out of a driveway and into the Detroit River. The incident happened on East River, between Church and Horsemill. The driver, believed to be in his 70s, was able to get out of the car by himself before it submerged. Two bystanders then helped the man onto land. He did not appear seriously injured, police said, but he was taken to Beaumont for further evaluation. It’s unclear at this time what caused the incident, and an investigation is ongoing. Good job GI first responders.

By Sarah Hemsworth wo years in a row, the Grosse Ile High School girls have ran, thrown, and jumped their way to through the Huron League Championship to first place, with the boys coming in second. With a finishing score of 145 points Grosse Ile successfully beat out second place, Carleton Airport (143), and third place, Monroe Jefferson (114). On the boys’ side Grosse Ile (129) finished ahead of third place Airport (105.5). However they were defeated by Milan at first place with 153 points. Marissa Swick was the 800m champion at the head of the pack with a
winning time of (2:28.34). In the same event Hannah Fulmer, another Grosse Ile finished fourth. In the sprints, Grosse Ile came out ahead. In the 4x100 relay Katie Graver, Hailey Swamy, Margaret Holmes, and Anna Finazzo passed the baton to victory in under 54 seconds. Grosse Ile had a total of four champions, along with several top 5 finishes, contributing to their victory at the league meet. An amazing way to end the season for the girls track team. Although they will miss the Class of 2017, the team consist of many young student-athletes, and is looking forward to returning strong next year.

he Grosse Ile Police Department was recognized by the National Association of Women Highway Safety Leaders on June 5th, for going above and beyond the call of duty. The award resulted from of a unique program called, The Party Patrol, that was developed and implemented seventeen years ago by Sergeant Kenneth Pelland. He recognized the need to develop a proactive enforcement task force that would work to reduce the underage drinking in this area. The Party Patrol is a special task force funded through the state and is comprised of approximately 20 Downriver police officers. They meet on a regular basis to assess what is going on in the surrounding areas. “The whole thing got started because we were noticing an SEE HONORED on page 7
