Cruisers gotta cruise!
Photos by Larry Caruso
The Downriver Cruise is no longer an official event and it has no sponsorships, but that doesn’t prevent Downriver’s classic car cruise community from congrating on the final weekend of June each year to watch the classics roll up and down Fort Street. The cruise route still winds through Lincoln Park, Southgate, Wyandotte and Riverview and thousands still come out to see and be seen.

Married couple celebrates an amazing milestone - 70 years!
Donald and Marion Mitchell on their wedding day in 1950 and on their 70th wedding anniversary in 2020.
You sometimes hear of longtime romances and love affairs, but you’ll rarely hear one that is longer than the one written by Donald and Marion Mitchell of Riverview. Doanld and Marion have been married for an amazing 70 years. To celebrate, the couple’s family arranged a drive-by parade to salute the huge milestone. It was not the party the family would have liked to have had, but it had to do during these pandemic times. The couple met while attending Melvindale High School, where they each graduated in 1946. Donald went into the Army after graduation and Marion waited for his return. Their marriage took place at the Allen Park Presbyterian church on June 24, 1950 and the couple built their first home in Allen Park. Don was an Allen Park school teacher, band director and administrator in Allen Park for many years before going into Administration in the Woodhaven Public Schools. In 1956, daughter Gail joined
their family and in 1958 another daughter, Lynn, came along. The family outgrew their home in 1969 at which time they found property in Riverview and built a home they fell in love with on 14965 Stoneham Lane (Pheasant Run). The family grew when Gail married Bruce Vos and Lynn married Bruce Bishop. Gail and Bruce have been married 43 years and have two sons, Justin and Brian Vos. Lynn and Bruce have been married for 37 years and have children Emily, Mark and Taylor. Donald and Marion also now have four great grandchildren Sydney, Walter, Whitney and Henry. After retirement, Dinald and Marion were “snowbirds,” travelling to Fort Myers every year for nearly 20 years. The retired couple also worked at the Riverview Highlands Golf Course. Like the rest of us, Don and Marion are anxious for the Coronavirus to be brought under control so they can return to normal life, which for them includes lunch on Fridays with friends at the Sportsmen’s Den.

Camp Invention returns for sixth year Aug. 10-14 Director Amy Farkas and the Riverview Community School District is excited and proud to host Camp Invention for the sixth year in a row. Camp Invention is the only nationally recognized summer program focused on creativity, innovation, real-world problem solving and the spirit of invention. Through hands-on programming, Camp Invention encourages children entering kindergarten through sixth grade to explore science, technology, engineering and mathematics curriculum inspired by some of the world’s greatest inventors. Camp Invention is a program of the National Inventors Hall of Fame. This nationwide, nonprofit organization is committed to the curious minds and innovative spirits of the past, present and future. Since 1990, our education programs have served more than 1.5 million children, and 170,000 teachers and leadership Interns. This year, because of our exceptional campers and dedication to Camp Invention, Seitz has been chosen to pilot next year’s Camp Invention curriculum. This curriculum, called Vanguard, will challenge students to: Create Stretch your imagination as you design and build a launching device and dream up a morphing vehicle. Problem Solve Create a robotic, solar-powered cricket and use hands-on, creative problem solving to outsmart its predators. Build Confidence Find your voice as a persistent entrepreneur by reverse engineering technology and marketing your inventions. Riverview’s Camp Invention was granted over $16,000 in scholarship funding to make it possible for camp to cost just $25 per camper. This price is exceptional because the program is already a bargain at the regular price of $225. Farkas and the district are honored to be hosting Camp Invention Vanguard for live, in person, instruction the week of Aug. 10-14. We are equally grateful for the opportunity to expose 90 campers, nine Leaders In Training, 12 Mentors and Instructors to the amazing STEM experience and programming that Camp Invention provides.

CULINARY CAPERS Rhubarb. It’s a vegetable treated as a fruit (i.e., rhubarb desserts and rhubarb jams) because of its high acid content. Not only is rhubarb a favorite summer baking and cooking ingredient, but it’s also nutritious and low in calories with lots of vitamins (including Vitamin K) and contains EVELYN CAIRNS practically no fat or choRiverview lesterol. Register If you’re a baseball fan, you know that the word rhubarb has been slang for a heated quarrel or fight between umpires and team managers for decades. The instant replay has taken care of that. Strawberries, another summer favorite, are popular rhubarb partners and much more versatile than the tart vegetable. I took advantage of the current abundance of both rhubarb and strawberries by baking a delicious rhubarb bread from a recipe on the Land O Lakes website and making strawberry rhubarb jam and two amazingly simple plain strawberry jams from recipes in my archived jam file. One of the latter two has only two ingredients and is cooked in the microwave for 10 minutes. By the way, July is National Strawberry Month. RHUBARB STREUSEL BREAD For the bread: 1 cup sugar ½ cup butter, softened 1/3 cup orange juice 2 large eggs 2 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking powder ¼ teaspoon baking soda ¼ teaspoon salt 1½ cups (about 3 medium stalks fresh rhubarb, sliced into ¼-inch pieces) For the streusel: 2 tablespoons sugar 2 tablespoons firmly packed brown sugar 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour 1 tablespoon butter, melted 1 ½ teaspoons cinnamon Heat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour an 8x4-inch loaf pan; set aside. Combine 1 cup sugar and ½ cup butter in a mixing bowl. Beat at medium speed, scraping bowl often, until creamy. Add orange juice and eggs, and beat at low speed just until mixed (mix-
ture will look slightly curdled). Stir in the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt just until moistened. Gently stir in the rhubarb (batter will be thick). Set aside 1½ cups of the batter, then spread the remainder into the prepared pan. Combine streusel ingredients in a small bowl, stirring until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Sprinkle half of the crumbs over the batter in the pan and press gently into the batter. Carefully spread the reserved batter into the pan and top with the remaining streusel, pressing it into the batter. Bake 65 to 70 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Cool 10 minutes and remove from the pan. (Notes: If, desired, the bread can be baked in a 9x5-inch loaf pan for 60 to 65 minutes. Once the loaf is completely cooled, it can be wrapped in aluminum foil and refrigerated. It freezes well, too.) STRAWBERRY RHUBARB FREEZER JAM 2 ½ cups chopped rhubarb 2 ½ cups chopped strawberries 2 cups sugar 3-ounce package strawberry Jell-O Mix together the rhubarb, strawberries and sugar. Cook until juicy and rhubarb is tender. Add Jell-O and cook about 1 minute, or until dissolved. Poor into jars, cool and freeze. THREE-INGREDIENT STRAWBERRY JAM 4 cups halved strawberries 1 cup sugar 2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice Combine strawberries and sugar in a medium saucepan and bring to a simmer over medium heat, stirring frequently. Reduce heat and simmer 1 hour or until thick, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat and stir in lemon juice. Transfer to containers, cool and store in refrigerator up to a month. TWO-INGREDIENT STRAWBERRY JAM 2 cups strawberries 1/3 cup granulated sugar Mash berries and sugar in a 2½-quart, at least, bowl (not smaller, or the jam will boil over). Microwave, uncovered, on high for 10 minutes, stirring once halfway through. Cool completely. Makes about 1 cup. Through the years, a look at Summertime in Riverview Maybe it’s just me but, I’m sure there are those of you who think: “Here’s the 4th of July, and just like that, here is Labor Day, and you ask yourself, “What happened to summer?” Anyway, among the War Holiday’s we commemorate, a key factor is usually the number of casualties there were during these conflicts. Often you find POWMIA flags displayed GERALD along with the US. PERRY Riverview Flags. While it is noble Register and right that we honor the war dead, do you ever wonder what happened to the POW- MIAs from all these wars? Every now and then we hear of a body being discovered and then returned to the U. S. for burial. Locally, the one I know of was our own Pvt. Paul Terry, a Korean War casualty. But what about those still classified missing? I’m sure their parents or siblings wonder about them. The ones still missing that are included are: • World War I -- 3,350. (Wikipedia) • World War II -- 72,000 remain unaccounted for. (“Defense POWMIA accounting agency). • Korean War -- 7,800 remain unaccounted for. As of 2005 the search was suspended due to security concerns with North Korea. of the day, (Coved - 19, and the the racial protests) we just zipped right by Memorial Day, and D Day, the invasion of Nazi-held Europe. In one day, the United States lost 1,465 soldiers. In total, the US. lost 9,386 to World War II. Rest in peace, all you heroes! This 4th of July Day, also known as Independence Day, has gotten past us, too. Let us not forget those who fought for us to become a free nation. Free from the bonds of the dictatorship of Great Britain and their mighty Army. The 4th of July has been a federal holiday in the United States since 1941, but the tradition of Independence day celebrations goes back to the 18th century and the American Revolution in July of 1776. In years past, the early 1960s, the City of Riverview celebrated Independence Day with a slew of activities, such as a parade with Floats, Marching bands, sponsored by the American Legion Post 389, a St. Andrews Pipe Band, an Ox Roast, a greased pig chase, a Miss Riverview Contest Pageant, luau dance, water ball fights held by the Fire Department, go-cart races, fireworks, and a whole lot more. But as all good things must come to an end, it did. For a long while it was hard to resurrect. Volunteers were hard to come by and so the celebration fell on hard times, until a fellow by the name of Mike Shea, Recreation Director, and his gang of hard workers, namely Barb Olsen, Marvin Morris and others, resurrected the celebration and moved it to later in the summer. That became Riverview Days, which later became Summerfest. Thanks to a very active Council, the celebration continues under Recreation Director Todd Dickman and his department workers. Have a nice summer everyone.

The Eagle Project required the approval of the Scoutmaster, Steven Washburn, the Riverview Community High School Principal Charlie Pike, and the City of Riverview. Once Paul had approval from the three parties he Workers repair the 20-year-old “R” in the berm in front of the high school began his fundraising campaign. He solicited donations from friends, family, parent clubs, civic groups, local businesses and school administration. In the end almost $1,500 was raised. Once funding was secured the procurement of materials and construction planning sessions began. At this point it was pretty clear several entities and organizations had to work closely together to make this project happen. The first step in took place on Saturday, June stones. Pick something that hits home, something that they are passionate about to focus on. Then based on that premise, develop an idea that would benefit the community. “Follow that with creating a concept and most importantly take the time to carefully plan out the project, start to finish. You’ll get out of it what you put into it. Be proud to be a Boy Scout and continue to strive to obtain Eagle. Once an Eagle, always an Eagle!” Swift said he is happy his project continues to be a source of community pride. “I am so happy and proud, not to mention incredibly humbled, to continuously see all of the photos on Facebook or in the newspapers that Riverview High School students, teams, groups, graduates and others have taken by the “R,” he said. “And I look forward to seeing more in the future. Plus it is likely the only Eagle Project you can see from outer space!” Swift thanked Boy Scout Troops 1659 and 1795 for volunteering to assist in the much-needed facelift. From Riverview Troop 1659 were Landon Eichler, Thomas Roberts, Christian Lancina, Donald Spurloch and John Strassner. Also on hand to help were scouts Evan McDonald, Quin Kent and Amy Maloney from Troop 1795. Swift also thanked Ron Miller from Miller Towing for not only delivering the “R’ back in 2000, but also for his help in pulling it back into place during the restoration.

Local officials display ceremonial “reopening” of the region “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times…” The partial quote from Charles Dickens’ 1859 novel A Tale of Two Cities could be a reflection on recent times during the worldwide pandemic known as COVID-19. DAVE While the coronavirus GORGON brought much of the Riverview Register globe to a grinding halt to life as we knew it, dozens of leaders from the Downriver area went on record to support a return to the “best of times” during a ceremonial “reopening” of the region on July 1 in Taylor. The afternoon gathering, called “Reopening Downriver,” laid the groundwork for a Downriver business recovery designed to get businesses back on the path to success, while encouraging residents to shop locally and promote their favorite businesses using “#SupportDownriver” in social media posts.
Southgate resident Tim Schramm, one of the owners of Howe-Peterson Funeral Home in Taylor.
Downriver business and government leaders stressed the need for a “united region,” citing a joint resolution adopted by the Southern Wayne County Regional Chamber of Commerce and the Downriver Community Conference (DCC). The resolution suggests several phases necessary for economic recovery: support for Downriver municipalities, workforce development and support for local small businesses. The ceremony was broadcast live on the Chamber of Commerce Facebook page. At the end of a series of addresses, participants gathered for a ceremonial ribbon cutting. A number of lawn signs created by Taylor-based MI Custom Signs containing the #SupportDownriver message were distributed. “The event was a significant and symbolic step forward for the Downriver region as we look to reopen inSEE REOPENING, Page 19

REOPENING Continued from page 18 person economic activity safely and responsibility,” summed up Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Ronald Hinrichs. During his address, Hinrichs said the pandemic spoiled “the best economy in most if not all of our lifetimes.” He said the campaign is meant to help return businesses to economic prosperity. “It’s going to take our entire community coming together to save businesses and jobs by shopping small and local,” said Hinrichs, who lives in Riverview. Hinrichs urged state and federal leadership to provide additional grant funding for businesses seeking personal protection equipment during the pandemic. DCC Executive Director Jim Perry said there is a push to get federal financial support for “local municipalities who have been significantly impacted as a result of the pandemic.” He said the DCC will continue to provide job training and other services. Other officials made announcements designed to deal with improving the business and economic
climate. Wayne County Treasurer Eric Sabris said there would be no foreclosures into March 2021. He said it is important for property owners to keep their properties, to keep businesses alive and to keep people employed. He urged people to get on a tax payment plan, if necessary, through the Treasurer’s office website. Keynote speaker Michael Patrick Shields, a former Wyandotte and Grosse Ile resident, told a story about how he received advice along the way to his successful career by reaching out to successful business and government leaders, including President George Herbert Walker Bush and Downriver industrialist Heinz Prechter, who lived on Grosse Ile at the time. Now a veteran radio personality and host of Spotlight Media Studios’ “Michigan’s Big Show,” Shields indicated anyone needing help should ask for it. It was Riverview Police to the rescue last month when a flock of five baby ducklings fell through a sewer grate in front of the Michigan House Senior Living facility on Quarry Road. Workers at the facility heard the frantic mother duck quacking and went to investigate. They discovered the ducklings in the sewer and called Riverview Police/ Fire and animal control. The first-responders came and in superhero fashion, saved the stuck ducks. Mommy duck never left the scene during the commotion and she and her babies were reunited and relocated to a safer environment.

Part of a healthy diet is smart snacking As chiropractors, we don’t just help to get you healthy—we want to help you stay healthy, too. Sometimes, this goes beyond adjustments and considers diet. Admit it or not, everyone snacks— but not always healthily. Here are a few tips to help you snack smarter. 1. Keep chewing. Did you know that a fully chewed bite can mean moving your jaw up and down 40 times? Studies show that people who chew thoroughly feel fuller than those who skimp on chewing. 2. Fill gaps with snacks. Finding it hard to fit in the recommended servings of fruits and veggies each day? Consider snacking on frozen grapes or celery with peanut butter to fill nutritional gaps in your diet. 3. Plan your snacks. The brownbag approach never fails. Pack your snacks yourself so you aren’t stuck running to a vending machine for sugar-laden munchies when hunger strikes. Do’s and Don’ts of Back Pain Got back pain? You’re not alone. Consider these do’s and don’ts to help you get through it. DO: Strengthen your core. Regular exercise strengthens important core muscle groups including obliques, pelvic floor and deep abdominals. DON’T: Sleep on your stomach. Stomach sleepers put the largest amount of pressure on their spine, head and neck at night, leading to pain during the day. DO: Stay hydrated. Because most of our body is water, it needs proper,
steady intake to keep it functioning properly. If you’re thirsty, you’ve waited too long. DON’T: Sit for long periods of time. If you sit behind a desk all day set a reminder to get up and move at least once each hour. DO: Get your spine checked. You shouldn’t have to live in pain and chiropractic care can help correct the underlying issue. Exercise For the Elderly Aging means celebrating the best years of your life with the ones you love. For some, it might mean traveling. For others, relaxing. Whatever it means to you, making time for exercise in your elder years is crucial. To start, it’s important to condition the mind to accept the challenges that may come with physical exertion. Don’t do this by setting out to run five miles after a year of inactivity. Instead, set small goals like adding a quarter-mile to your walk each day until you feel like you’re back in the workout groove. This will also help you avoid unnecessary injury. To improve balance and lower the likelihood of falls during activity, consider getting adjusted. Many seniors consult our practice to improve joint range of motion, reduce postural issues and increase a sense of well-being. The health of your spine plays an important role in your health and vitality. From Cousineau Chiropractic

Area residents looking for a safe and secure way to destroy confidential personal paper documents are invited to Free Shred Day from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 19, at the Riverview Land Preserve, 20863 Grange. Up to three “banker boxes” of documents may be brought to the land preserve for shredding on site using a shredding truck. The drive-through event will destroy such documents as receipts, bank statements, medical records, old tax documents, utility invoices and credit card offers – items that contain
sensitive information (such as name, address, social security numbers, account numbers, etc.) that the resident no longer needs. Jeff Dobek, assistant city manager in Riverview and director of the Land Preserve, said Shred Day promotes recycling, keeping paper out of landfills, and is a great way to fight identity theft. The shredded paper will be recycled. Each ton of recycled paper can save 17 trees, 380 gallons of oil, 7,000 gallons of water and 4,000 kilowatts of energy – enough to power the average home for six months. “Instead of ending up in a landfill, the documents will be shredded, taken away and recycled,” Dobek said. The event will be held rain or shine. Rubber bands, paperclips, staples
and folders should not be removed from documents being shredded. No businesses or binders, please. At the Riverview Land Preserve, “we’re always looking for ways to improve and operate the finest modern-day landfill,” Dobek said. “We’re also committed to local residents, customers and our community partners to providing highquality recycling options to protect environmental resources.” Free Shred Day is “our contribution to the communities that we work with every day,” he said. “We want to do our part. We’re the Downriver communities’ repository.” The Riverview Land Preserve is a Michigan-based, licensed, Type II (non-hazardous) solid waste landfill facility owned and operated by the
city since 1968. The facility design and operation exceed both state and federal regulations, making it possible to manage a variety of non-hazardous wastes in an environmentally responsible manner. The Riverview Land Preserve facilities and services are designed to meet the needs of municipal, commercial and industrial clients. The site is an important regional resource that serves Riverview and the Downriver communities of Allen Park, Brownstown Township, Ecorse, Flat Rock, Gibraltar, Grosse Ile, Lincoln Park, Melvindale, River Rouge, Rockwood, Southgate, Taylor, Trenton, Woodhaven and Wyandotte. She has sold a few commissioned pieces, sold a piece at auction at the Downriver Council for the Arts and has been featured for her work on Fox 2 News. The 2020 Riverview Community High School grad is headed to the Specs Howard School of Media Arts to study graphic design.
