Riverview soccer team closes out historic season Gustavo Soto: Riverview GOAT

The Riverview High School Boys Soccer team had a historic season.

The Coach Ben Zolynsky’s club went 19-2, won the Monroe Invitational, Huron League championship, a Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 2 district championship and reached the MHSAA D2

regional finals.

During the regular season, Riverview defeated defending Division 3 state champion and archrival Grosse Ile on a late goal and used that victory as a springboard to the Huron League championship, the school’s first since 2015.

Salvador De La Torre and Gustavo Soto got it rolling scoring four goals and handing out five assists between the two of them to propel the3 Pirates into the district finals.

Although this season was somewhat shorter than most because of the delayed start caused by the pandemic and Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s shutdown orders, senior Gustavo Soto scored 30 goals and had 13 assists in 21 games.

That goal total made him Riverview’s all time leading goalscorer, with 72 goals in four years.

His goal total surpassed that of current Riverview assistant coach Hermes Toska, who scored 66 goals in four years.

One simple move for a full-body workout

Sometimes there isn’t enough time in the day to get a long workout in.

Good thing there’s the reverse lunge twist to give you a full-body workout in just a few simple steps: Step 1: Stand with feet hips-width apart keeping your spine straight and tailbone slightly tucked.

Step 2: Hold a rolled towel out in front of you with both hands at shoulder level, as if you’re pulling it apart. Inhale.

Step 3: On the exhale, step your right foot back into a reverse lunge. Left knee should be bent at a 90-degree angle.

Step 4: Twist to the left, using the towel to leverage the twist. Keep your legs and hips square as you twist.

Step 5: On the inhale, untwist back to the reverse lunge, then step back to standing.

Repeat on the other side. That’s one rep. Complete three to four sets of 15 to 20 reps.

The first round of regionals is as far as any Riverview team had ventured before this season. But the 2020 Bucs made some more history by becoming the first squad to win a regional game and reach what is effectively the “Elite Eight” of MHSAA soccer.

Riverview faced and defeated Chelsea in what turned out to be a showcase for the Riverview defense and goalkeeper Scotty Grundwald.

“This is special.” said Zolynsky.

“My guys will remember this game for the rest of their lives. All of their first time to regionals. Only 16 teams left in Division 2 and our game is against a really tough team from Chelsea.”

The game was a battle from the start. Both teams had several good scoring chances in the first half. But the second half was a different story.

It was all Chelsea, but the Riverview defense was up to the task, especially senior captain Andrew Ray and Grunwald, another senior, who had the game of his life.

Grundwald made 17 saves in the game to keep the 0-0 tie going into overtime and then double overtime.

Riverview continued to defend in both overtimes getting only a couple of scoring opportunities. Then came the shootout.

Chelsea’s goalie had not had to make many saves after the first half, but the ones he did make were really good.

But this is a Scotty Grunwald story.

His confidence was incredible going into the shootout and he ended up saving the first two Chelsea penalty kicks.

Riverview Sophomore Mathew Wong scored Riverview’s first PK, but the next two Pirates had their shots saved.

Riverview’s fourth shooter was freshman Logan Ruffner, who buried it into the back of the net, but so did the Chelsea player.

All tied up it came down to the last shooters. Senior Salvador De La Torre got the goalie going the wrong way

scoring for the Pirates.

Grundwlad had had the best game of his life and he needed one more save to give Riverview it’s first ever regional win, but he wasn’t called on to make it because the Chelsea player sailed the ball over the net and the Pirates stormed the field in celebration.

History had been made.

The Bucs fell 6-1 to DeWitt the next time out and the magical season ended.

“There were a lot of tears,” said Zolynsky. “It was just because this crazy season was over. A season we didn’t even know if we were going to get to play. A season of firsts. A season we made Riverview soccer history.

(We were) 19-2 with our only losses coming from two teams (DeWitt and Grosse Ile) still playing in the Final Four for a state championship. A season with wins over almost the entire Downriver area. A season with nine seniors that really took on the belief in this soccer family.”

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services has issued new recommendations so please educate yourselves on them.

Our new COVID-19 case count continues to be very low so please keep doing what you’re doing.

There is always so much to say in my articles.

Let’s start with the andrew recent passage of the swift Public Safety Millage.

Riverview is on its way to building a fire department with eight fulltime Fire-Fighter/Paramedics and a contingent of part-time personnel, all of them with the talent to provide our whole community with Advanced Life Support service.

Thank You for your support and the confidence you’ve placed in us.

Another important item is the success of the Riverview Highlands during this pandemic. Income is way up due the tremendous increase in the number of rounds played compared to last year.

One of the main reasons for golfers returning to our fine course is the significant investment the city has made in the golf course itself and the surrounding area. Leagues are returning and in the near future they may find new carts and more new paths to drive them on.

It’s been a while since you’ve been updated on the new business activity.

Contrary to popular belief, Riverview is more than a ‘Drive through city.” Earlier this year Athletico Physical Therapy moved in at the corner of Fort and Pennsylvania in the Riverview Center mall. They specialize in a variety of physical therapy, rehabilitation and workman’s comp services to help patients get back to doing what they like to do.

In the same mall the very popular “The Taco Stand” now resides next to an open area. This will be an awesome place to go when the weather is more conducive to eating outside. I would

suggest you get their Taco Stand Burrito, it is very good.

In the same mall, Windsor Beauty Supply will be open soon.

Windsor Beauty Supply is a supplier, manufacturer, and distributor of a complete line of Hair Color, Hair Care, Skin, and nail products.

Another new small business is Cherry Cutlery located at 18511 Fort (corner of Hale and Fort). They are an independent cutlery business which specializes in pocket knives, hunting knives, and kitchen cutlery. Cherry Cutlery also sharpens knives. Give them a visit they’d love to meet you.

Bogard Law Offices moved in on the north side of Fort and Colvin. This is a family law firm who specializes in bringing law to your corner. The city welcomes their family to our Riverview Family.

RP Fuel opened this summer on the north side of Zorba’s. Like most gas stations, they provide a good selection of convenience items too.

Piramal Pharma Solutions located in the southeast corner of our fine city is planning a second major expansion in Riverview. Piramal (Ash Stevens) is the contract development and manufacturing arm of Piramal Pharma Ltd. It has operations across North America, Europe, and Asia. We are glad they have chosen to expand in Riverview and bring in more high paying jobs.

Congrats to Louie at Riverview Cuts. He loves Riverview so much he changed the name of his barber shop from Jim’s Barbershop to “Riverview Cuts.” He is located in the same mall as A Serendipity Cakery. Stop in and say hello.

The Riverview Goodfellows have already begun their work on making sure that “No Child Goes without a Christmas.”

Jason Gribble from the Riverview Community School District is the President this year. He is joined by Tim Bohr as Vice-President. Returning as the all-important Secretary is Lou Ann Durand, while Doug Drysdale returns as Treasurer.

Speaking of apple recipes, I recently received the following email: Hi, Evelyn, I’m a longtime fan of yours! Every Wednesday, my dad would pick up the Mellus and the News Herald. We would spend the evening reading the papers cover to cover. I loved your recipe column and I may be mistaken, but do you remember an apple cake by the name of Mrs. Dula’s Apple Cake? Or very similar? If you have this gem of a recipe (I believe it called for a cup of oil, had walnuts and raw apples), could you republish it or send it to me? Thank you for so many fond memories! ~ Susan Brown Hi, Susan, Mrs. Eleanor Dula’s Raw Apple Cake, from the 1970s, was the all-time most popular recipe ever published in my Kitchen Korner column in the Mellus (and is one of my own favorites). You are not mistaken — the original recipe called for a cup of oil, but I revised it a bit in 2017, when it appeared in my Grosse Ile Grand Culinary Capers column. I had reduced the oil to ¾ cup and added ½ cup golden raisins.

I’ve made this one-bowl wonder both ways, and with other variations, as readers have as well, but I like Mrs. Dula’s original recipe the best, especially with golden raisins. I use a stand mixer for the batter, which is thick and hard to mix with a wooden spoon.

MRS. DULA’S ORIGINAL RAW APPLE CAKE 1¾ cups sugar 1 cup cooking oil 3 eggs 2 cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking soda ½ teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1 teaspoon vanilla 4 or 5 apples, thinly sliced, McIntosh or Jonathon 1 cup chopped nuts (divided) ½ cup golden raisins (not in the original) Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Add sugar, oil, eggs, flour, baking soda, salt, cinnamon and vanilla to a large bowl and beat with a wooden spoon (I used a stand mixer) until well blended. Fold in apples, ½ of the nuts (and all of the raisins, if using). Turn the batter into a greased and floured (or Pam-sprayed) 9x13 (or 15) baking pan. Sprinkle with remaining nuts and bake about 45 minutes, or until a toothpick tests clean.

And speaking of favorites, I’m sharing the following recipe for another favorite of mine and my tasters for an incredibly simple, addictively delicious zucchini cookie that also appeared in the Grosse Ile Grand in 2017. I am republishing it so readers of our sister publications, the Riverview Register, Wyandotte Warrior and Southgate Star, which were not in existence then, can enjoy it, too.

FAVORITE ZUCCHINI DROP COOKIES 1 egg, beaten 1 cup grated zucchini 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 cup sugar 1/2 cup (1 stick) softened butter (I use 1/3 cup cooking oil instead) 2 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon cinnamon ½ teaspoon cloves 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 cup coarsely chopped nuts 1 cup golden raisins Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

Mix together well the beaten egg, zucchini, baking soda, sugar and butter or oil. Combine the flour, cinnamon, cloves and salt and stir into first mixture. Stir in the nuts and raisins.

Drop the batter by heaping teaspoons onto greased or parchment-lined cookie sheets. Bake 12 to 15 minutes or until a toothpick tests clean.

Things are happening at Memorial Elementary Mrs. Kordalewski, Memorial kindergarten teacher, shared a story with her students called The Leaf Man by Lois Ehlert.

The story motivated students to not only explore leaves that make our fall season so beautiful, but also to create neat art projects that can be showcased here at school and later at home.

Memorial’s PBIS traveling store is open for shopping and students are eager to use their earned buckaroos to buy prizes, toys, and goodies.

Memorial students have worked very hard to make the best choices in regard to behavior, social distancing, and being safe.

Everyone at the school is very proud of them and we want them to have these monthly shopping opportunities as a reward for their selfdiscipline.

Phaze Nutrition in Riverview is supporting our Memorial families once again this year with their “Hat N Glove Drive.”

This annual tradition started and still continues through the generosity of owner Courtney Shultz.

It’s our turn at bat, friends: Think local first For the past three years, this paper’s November edition has featured a varying but similarly themed column by yours truly, asking you, dear readers, to think before you select who gets the money that you spend at Christmas time on gifts.

“Think Local” precepts and movements have at their hearts a bunch of people with genuine concern for what is lost if independent and locally owned businesses find their annual revenues diminished to the point of being no longer viable. It’s most noticeable and able to be influenced at this time of year.

Opening a store Peter requires a dazzling Rose leap of faith. Leases, Riverview Register signage, supplies and most of all, inventory. People open their stores with high hopes of having enough other people buy into their passion, personality and commitment to make their stores fly.

It only works if the niche is robust enough to be worthy. And if it is worthy, it still requires the owner to be insanely dedicated, working longer hours than they envisioned, and likely making less money than they hoped. All so they can deliver something to the area they serve that is unique and happy and connected to the people that like it.

Virtually all of these people intuitively understand that other indies need that same level of buy-in and support, and they do it -- they spend locally!

By the way, support doesn’t mean buying when you don’t like what is offered. Support means buying from them as if it was your son or daughter or wife or friend, when you could get it at bigger places or internet sites.

I have referred a few times to the idea of our society having “lost the thread.” I really hate it that it never occurs to people that there is a huge difference in the health and vitality of a city and region that is tied directly to where people get the things they need and want.

If anyone out there thinks that I don’t understand the appeal and lure of Amazon (for instance), you’re mistaken.

It is brilliant. And, it is also devastating to every local economy throughout the nation.

Every single city becomes less and less vibrant and attractive as a “cool place” if the businesses that populate and serve have their niches become less and less prosperous because customers click or go to big, publicly traded behemoths that exist to siphon money back to headquarters and stockholders.

As that erosion progresses, fewer and fewer businesses open their doors every morning in the cities that once hummed. The city becomes a shell of its former self, because customers that could be engaged and determined to keep their cities alive and well, buzzing like a bee hive, don’t.

When people click to buy because it is “easier” they are also saying that the vitality of their region

is not their concern or their responsibility.

That’s not how communities used to be. We used to care, collectively and as a society. Indeed, we have lost the thread.

We simply want to get what we want, and we really couldn’t care less about all that “community” nonsense.

Knowing full well that corporations (both brick and mortar and internet) strategize continually to take as much as possible away just rankles me.

They don’t use the local architect (at least three in Wyandotte alone), nor the local CPA and attorney, or food supply company, or anything that is sourced locally by local businesses.

That’s less money in the area that could have been income for people that would spend it locally as well. Then, any profitability of the operation is removed from each local economy, too, so it doesn’t circulate here; it goes elsewhere.

Three-and-a-half times more money stays local with indie choices, with ripple after-spending echoing out, being spent over and over again.

Compared to simply sending it away, choosing to not even consider the loss of the power of our choices, nor the benefit of or loss to the greater local good.

The stakes have never been higher, friends. I implore you to shift your shopping, as much as you can.

Sure, I’m biased, but that doesn’t make me wrong.

We’re losing Indie businesses at too fast of a clip.

The next several weeks of holiday shopping will have an impact, either positive or negative.

Let’s all try our best to make our corner of the Indie world a little bit better.

Reports indicate that many intend to do all of their shopping online this year. We just can’t let that happen here without a solid effort to push back hard.

Think first; Be Local, be a forceful influence for good: Shop Local. Eat at Indie restaurants when you do, too.

Yard waste collection extended Yard waste collection will be extended by two weeks and will end on Dec. 15, 2020.

Should you still have yard waste after this date you can take it to the Riverview Land Preserve. You will need proof of residency.

Alley trash pick up to be discontinued Effective Nov. 30 2020, the city of Riverview will no longer allow trash to be picked up in the alleys. If you currently have alley trash pickup, please put it at the curb out front of your home starting Nov. 30.

Below are some pointers that will assist residents in proper and incident free collection of your weekly household trash.

The collection process will be done with an automated arm truck and will require your cart to be set out for collection in the grass area between the sidewalk and the curb.

Place your cart with the handle towards your home and the opening facing the street.

To avoid loose trash blowing out into the environment, please bag all trash.

Carts should be placed three-feet from any fixed object (mailbox, fence, vehicle, tree, fire hydrant, additional containers, etc.) to avoid property damage and proper service of your trash.

Remembering the birth of ambulance service in Riverview One of my neighbors recently asked me, “Did you know that there has been a private ambulance service sitting outside of our fire department several times this past month?

“What’s up with that?”

That private service is one of the reasons we recently voted on a full time fire department with paramedics.

GERALD PERRY I think now would be a Riverview good time to review the Register history of what brought on ambulance service in Riverview.

In the many years prior to an ambulance service, when someone fell over in a dead faint, someone in the family or a neighbor knew what to do.

Prior to the 1960s, at least Downriver, local funeral homes ran a primitive type ambulance service.

Someone who was brave enough to drive an ambulance to the accident and the police officers would sometimes help load the victim in the ambulance and the driver would get them to the Hospital as fast as possible. Sometimes they got you to the hospital in time for the doctors to save you, and sadly, sometimes not.

The medical emergency history of Riverview pretty much was the same as the rest of the world, until about the 1950s when the volunteer fire department acquired an invention called a “Resuscitator.”

This device was thought to be a miracle worker.

It was a device using positive pressure to the lungs on an unconscious person, who was not breathing, in order to keep them oxygenated and alive, until help was available.

In the 1950s, a private Downriver ambulance service was born and operated out of a building in southern Wyandotte.

This was a slight improvement over the funeral ambulance, since it was dedicated to hauling the injured only. It was a nice big red Cadillac ambulance.

Not much room, but enough for a stretcher.

This service was adequate until a number of calls came in and you had a first-come, first-served situation.

Depending on how many calls were backed up, you might have to wait a

long time for an ambulance to arrive.

In the early 1960s, one such incident happened in Riverview. An elderly lady had died at home and the Riverview part-time, part-paid, Fire Department was summoned. They responded and immediately began to use the resuscitator.

They used the device on the elderly lady for an hour and 15 minutes. Since it was against the Law for anyone but a licensed Doctor to pronounce a person legally dead, the fireman had no choice but to continue to try to resuscitate the lady.

Finally, the elderly lady’s nephewin-law, who sometimes worked for the private ambulance company came to the house in an ambulance and the Fireman helped the driver put her in the ambulance.

This was the first of two incidents that happened in a short time.

The Village Council requested a minimum response time from the private ambulance company and the answer was it would cost the Village a lot of money, more than it could afford.

Donald Highfield who happened to be the Fire Chief at time, stated that this situation was going to stop. He promptly had his men convert his cityfurnished Fire Chief station wagon into an Ambulance, equipped with a used stretcher and a resuscitator. He brought in a instructor in advanced first aid and held classes so all of the men were trained to respond in our own ambulance.

Which brings us to the present where the city is faced with a similar situation.

The Riverview (part-time, partpaid) Fire Department over the years improved the ambulance service from two men on duty 24-7 trained only in First Aid to Advanced Life Suppor (ALS)t ambulance service manned by paramedics.

It has become hard to staff these advanced medical positions with just part-timers bringing us to the vote we just had on a full time fire department last week.

You may wonder how I know so much about the elderly lady situation all those many years ago: Well, I was there as one of the firefighters on the call.

Even a pandemic hasn’t kept award-winning fashion designer and artist Cheryl Zemke from expressing herself in new ways.

In fact, the Covid-19 pandemic has inspired her work.

Zemke, who lives in Riverview, has opened a boutique in downtown Wyandotte to share her handmade clothing and accessories, paintings and fabric art even as she continues to offer the costume design, bridal fashion and alterations that — pre-pandemic —she did from her home.

PAULA In July, the Washington Post featured NEUMAN Zemke’s painting, “Hold Me,” in Riverview Register an article, “The Best Art created by Washington Post readers during the pandemic.” The acrylic painting depicts embracing lovers wearing only masks and gloves and surrounded by virus molecules.

During the strictest part of the Covid lockdown, Zemke couldn’t have customers come into her home. So she devoted her sewing skills, time and energy to make thousands of masks, most of which she donated to health care workers when personal protective gear was in short supply.

Shoppers at the new Cheryl Zemke Boutique, 2938 Biddle Ave., Suite 4, can buy her handmade masks there as well as one-of-a-kind clothing items, hand-painted silk scarves, paintings large and small, fabric jewelry and a host of other items.

She has a degree in marketing from Lawrence Technological University and a degree in merchandising management from the International Academy of Design Technology. Zemke has won many awards for her fashion design, and in 2014 was named by StyleLine magazine as one of the top 10 “Designers to Watch” in the metropolitan area.

Combining her business savvy and her art has always been a goal.

“When I was in business school, I used to dream up proposals for a fashion boutique,” Zemke said. “I’ve always wanted to do it.”

Some time ago, she had considered renting a space in the building that once housed the Rialto Theatre (1934-56) in downtown Wyandotte for her boutique, but thought she couldn’t afford it. Then this summer in the midst of pandemic precautions, the landlord called her out of the blue.

“He was willing to divide the space,” Zemke said.

And with that, her dream was off and running.

She and her husband, Martin, spent six weeks of hard work remodeling the Suite 4 space from floor to ceiling. Her before-and-after photos show the transformation to the bright, art-filled space the boutique occupies today.

“I had a vision as soon as I came in here,” Zemke said.

“Now I just look around and imagine how it looked when I first came in.”

Her Oct. 2 grand opening party drew a large crowd of people, who ogled the art and enjoyed music and a fashion show with models wearing her fashions strutting their stuff on Biddle Avenue, even as mask-clad attendees kept appropriate social distance.

Zemke has been an artist as long as she can remember, but she didn’t take an art class until she was in seventh grade. So inspiring youngsters is important to her.

“I just want to encourage kids to do art,” she said.

The boutique is offering “Engaging Imaginations,” a monthly art challenge for children up to age 17. Applicants can pick up a free bag of art supplies — some coloring pages, paper and crayons or colored pencils — to make their creations. Then they can turn their finished artwork in to the boutique by the first of each month to be entered into a contest.

A 10-year-old Riverview Cub Scout’s initiative and intuitiveness has led to a prestigious award and exploration that could help determine what he does in life long after he is done with Scouting.

Declan MacDonald, a fourthgrader at Forest Elementary School, is the recipient of the Dr. Luis Walter Alvarez Supernova Award for STEM, which stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.

Declan is a member of Pack 1659 who is working toward his Webelo badge in his fourth year of Scouting.

He was presented the award during a recent outdoor ceremony at Young Patriots Park. He follows in the footsteps of older brother Evan, now a Boy Scout, who earned the Charles H. Townes Supernova Award in 2018.

STEM is part of an initiative the Boy Scouts of America has taken in “to encourage the natural curiosity of youth members and their sense of wonder” about the STEM fields through a wide range of existing programs. The STEM Nova Awards were created so that young Scouts can “have fun and receive recognition for their efforts.”

Declan, who has a twin brother Kieran, is described by his mother as shy but “very mature for his age.”

“He’s very responsible,” Mrs. MacDonald said. “He always wants to do the right thing… He’s a very good student.”

Den leader Alderman praised Declan’s attention to detail, including

wearing his uniform to meetings and events, including his red vest filled with patches.

“He’s proud to show what he’s done,” Alderman said. “He always has a smile on his face and always has a good time when he’s there.”

Declan said he enjoyed learning about STEM award namesake Dr. Alvarez and his theories on dinosaurs, adding he was grateful to win the award.

Riverview Mayor Andrew Swift, who attended the award presentation, praised Declan and other Scouts who make a difference in the city.

“Riverview is very proud to have Scouts like Declan who not only want to improve their community but their minds, too,” the Mayor said.

“Riverview Cub Scout Pack 1659 continues to product high-quality Scouts and as Mayor I like to make sure they get as much exposure as possible.”

Alderman said Pack 1659 members take part in a number of communityservice projects throughout the year, including those planned by the Riverview Kiwanis Club, which charters the pack.

“Declan has helped the pack with several service projects,” Alderman said, “including distributing school supplies at the end of August with the Riverview Kiwanis, helping with the Kiwanis spaghetti dinners, school holiday activities, Riverview’s tree-lighting ceremony, Wyandotte Christmas parades and helping to raise funds to support dogs in Detroit through the C.H.A.I.N.E.D. Organization.”

During recent months, den meetings were held outdoors at 5:30 p.m. on Mondays. Alderman said depending on the effects of COVID-19, the goal is to get back indoors for meetings soon.

Mrs. MacDonald said Scouting has been a difference maker for her family.

“It’s been really good for all of us,” she said. “It’s a lot of fun and there are a lot of opportunities and new events we wouldn’t have been otherwise exposed to.”

Riverview offense is explosive and dangerous HANK MINCKIEWICZ Riverview Register

In the previous 10 years the Riverview football team has scored 50 or more points four times. In the past three weeks, the unbeaten Bucs have done it twice.

Riverview clobbered archrival Grosse Ile 60-29 in its Huron League finale and then, after a 2-0 forfeit win over Redford Thurston, Riverview opened the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 3 state playoff with a 59-6 blowout of Melvindale on Oct. 30.

With the win, the Huron League champion Pirates improved to 7-0 on the season.

Riverview coach Derek McLaughlin said he and the team are happy to be playing and the league title and unbeaten season are icing on the cake.

“I’m blessed to be coaching; we’re blessed to be playing football,” he said.

The win boosted the Pirates into the next round of districts against defending MHSAA D3 state champ River Rouge. Rouge beat Muskegon 30-7 to win the state title last year and the Panthers are 5-1 this year with four shutouts. Results of the RiverviewRouge game were available after the Register’s deadline.

Huron and Allen Park remain alive on the other side of the district bracket.

In the game against Melvindale, the Pirates came out and put their foot on the Cards’ necks in the first quarter, scoring in the first minute of the game and rolling up 38 points in the first 12 minutes alone.

Preston Thompson picked off a Melvindale pass and returned it 58 yards for a score to get the rout started.

Still in the first quarter, Thompson scored on a 57-yard run and hit Cal Lockhart with a 24-year scoring pass.

was over, so was the game.

Riverview scored one more touchdown in each of the remaining quarters with Jonathan Overall, Gavin Blackwood and Jared Brandes doing the honors.

The Huron League finale against Grosse Ile was a wild shootout, at least it was in the first half. After the intermission, the Riverview defense stiffened, while the Red Devils could not find an antidote for the potent Buc

offense.

Riverview did all it’s offensive work on the ground as 13 different Pirates carried the ball and the team rolled up 551 rushing yards. Quarterback Thompson threw one pass and it was incomplete.

Five runners -- Moultri, Preston, Johnson, Christian Lopez and Jacob Puma -- rushed for 40 or more yards.

Leading the way was Puma,who had a monster night with 205 yards on 11 carries and three touchdowns. Lopez had 129 yards and he also had a touchdown.

In addition to Puma and Lopez, Riverview got rushing touchdowns from Thompson, Moultrie and Blackwood.

Defensively, Riverview had seven tackles for loss, including three from Lockhart. Lopez had 11 tackles in the game and Moultrie and Johnson had eight each.

Grosse Ile’s lefty quarterback Nate Brown passed for 301 yards and three TDs against the Bucs, but the Riverview defenders got him, too, with three pass interceptions. Moultrie, Johnson and Zach Werling had the picks, with Johnson taking his back for a score.

Grosse Ile senior running back Joey Pizzo has been unstoppable in some games this year, but the Bucs stopped him, holding him to fewer than 100 yards from scrimmage. He had 40 yards rushing and 42 receiving.

Grosse Ile wound up scoring 17 more points against the Bucs than anyone else has this season, but it wasn’t nearly enough.

“We knew it was going to be a tough game,” said Grosse Ile coach John Bodner. “We did everything we could, they just outmuscled us.”

With the win, Riverview kept possession of the Colvin Cup, which goes to the annual winner of this rivalry game. The Red Devils won the trophy during their unbeaten league championship season in 2018, but the Bucs won it back last week and retained it this year.

Riverview runners headed to the state meet

The Riverview boys cross country team, which ran second to Monroe Jefferson in all three Huron League jamborees this season, including the championship meet on Oct. 16, got the last laugh on the Bears on Oct. 30.

Led by top 10-finishing freshman Logan Ruffner, the Pirates ran to a third-place finish at the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 2 regional at Lake Erie Metropark and snagged a qualifying position for the Nov. 7 state finals in Brooklyn. Those results were available after the Register’s deadlines.

Riverview’s season-long tormenter, Jefferson, had to settle for a fifth-place showing and just two individual statemeet qualifiers.

Chelsea won the regional with 48 points, Adrian was a close second with 48.

Riverview was third with 88, Dearborn Divine Child was fourth with 90 and Jefferson was fifth with 107. Tecumseh, New Boston Huron and Trenton finished the scoring at the eight-team regional.

Ruffner and Sam Polgar led the Bucs to the victory.

Ruffner, who was also a member of the Huron-League and district championship Riverview soccer team this season, finished eighth at regionals with a time of 17:03.

Junior Polgar ran 17:06 and finished 10th in the 70-man field.

The rest of the Riverview runners were Eric Pickell (20th, 17:22), Justin Shupe, 29th, 17:54), Gavin Shelton

(34th, 18:08), Hayden Holmes (40th, 18:21) and Blake Robinson (44th, 18:28).

Riverview got into the regional race by finishing second - to Jefferson - at the nine-team pre-regional race hosted by Milan. Jefferson scored 40 points and Riverview was right behind with 42. Huron and Trenton were the other two teams to qualify from this pre-regional.

Ruffner ran 16:30 and was second to Summit Academy’s D’Anthony Shaw, who clocked 16:29. Pickell was seventh (17:16), Shupe was eighth (17:19), Holmes was 12th (17:34) and Robinson was 13th (17:37).

The state-meet berth capped a great year for the Bucs, who not only fared well in league competitions, but also claimed the Maroon Shoe title against neighbors Gabriel Richard and Southgate Anderson and won the Division 1 race against much bigger schools at the 36th annual Monroe Jefferson Invitational run at Sterling State Park.

For the Riverview girls, Paige Beuadry, who has had a great season, kept up the good work at regionals.

Beaudry, who was first at the first Huron League jamboree, first at the league championship race and first at the pre-regional, grabbed fifth at regionals and was Riverview’s lone female statemeet qualifier.

Beaudry, a senior, ran 20:16 and was beaten by just four runners.

The Pioneers reached the regional as a team by finishing second at the pre-regional at Stockbridge. Richard was second to the host school in that six-team race.

Individually, Meszaros was the meet champ, running 16:59 and beating out secondplace Satkowiak.

Mezaros was also second, by a single second, at the Catholic High School League Intersectional Division 1-2 championships. He ran 17:01 that day.

Winning Michigan High School Athletic Association state football playoff games is becoming something of a habit over at Gabriel Richard When the Pioneers beat Springport 42-6 on Oct. 30 it was the fourth straight year the team won a first-round playoff game. In 2019 the Pioneers beat Clinton, in 2018 they beat Detroit Central (and Cabrini) and in 2017 they Pioneers beat Lutheran Northwest.

In all, the Pioneers have been to the MHSAA state playoffs in six of the last seven years.

In the win over Springport, Nick Szczechowski was 7-for-8 passing for 78 yards and two touchdowns and he ran for 54 yards and a score.

Luke Gordon was the top receiver for the Pioneers (6-1) with four receptions for 58 yards and two touchdowns and he rushed for 53 yards and a score.

Michael Holdsclaw had 142 yards on the ground and a touchdown and on defense he took back a fumble for six points. The Holdsclaw scoop and score was one of six takeaways by Richard’s defense against the Spartans (1-4).

Miguel Cantu and Brendan Hills each had an interception while Carson Sollars, Aramis Lackey and Hunter Hastings each recovered a fumble.

The victory pushed the Pioneers into the second round of the state playoffs against Jackson Lumen Christi in a game that was played after the Register’s deadline.

Before heading into the state playoffs, Richard played in the Catholic High School League championship against Clarkston Everest Collegiate at Novi Detroit Catholic Central High School.

And like in last year’s league championship game, the Pioneers had little luck with the Mountaineers, who won their third strait league title, this time with a 35-0 win over Richard, This is the third consecutive season Everest downed Richard in the CHSL finals. And it was the third different site. The 2018 game took place at Ford Field and last year’s game was played at Eastern Michigan’s Rynearson Stadium. But this fall the game was moved to a smaller, outside venue due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mountaineers’ senior quarterback Giovanni Mastromatteo’s 28-yard touchdown strike to Joey Thibodeau got the day’s scoring binge started. Jack Lasceski’s two rushing touchdowns (58, 1) in the second quarter placed the Mountaineers on top 21-0 at the half.

In his third year under center piloting the Everest offense, Mastromatteo threw for 152 yards and ran for another 65 on the ground. Lasceski logged 135 yards rushing.

Slotback Jimmy Neme contributed a 50-yard rushing score for the Mountaineers in the third quarter and Nate Beggs finished off the onslaught with a 2-yard plunge across the goal line.

Richard lost its first game of the season Saturday, failing to find any momentum on either side of the

ball.

To reach the league championship game, the Pioneers cruised to a 42-14 victory and clinched the CHSL Intersectional 1 championship.

For the night, Szczechowski accounted for 223 allpurpose yards and three touchdowns in the Richard win. In addition, quarterback Joe Wisniewski rushed for a touchdown and threw one along the way against the Ventures, who came in ranked No. 10 in the state in Division 7.

Wisniewski opened the scoring, as he found the end zone from five yards out on a quarterback keeper in the first quarter. The PAT was blocked and the home team led 6-0. Pioneers kicker Marco Pomponio, a soccer player in his first game with the football team, hit his next four attempts.

The Ventures drove deep into Richard territory, but the Pioneers forced a turnover on downs, capped off by a sack from Carson Sollars on fourth down.

Soon after, Szczechowski, took the ball at the Foley 40-yard line, and the junior promptly raced to the end zone. On the twoJoe Wisniewski point conversion attempt, Drew Daiek hauled in a pass from Wisniewski and put the home team up 14-0.

Early in the second quarter, Winsiewski hooked up with Michael Calhoun for a 30-yard touchdown and the Pioneers grabbed a 21-0 lead. Richard took a 28-0 advantage following a 26-yard touchdown

run from Michael Holdsclaw, who finished the night with 90 yards on the ground and a touchdown.

Foley got on the board before the half, on a nineyard run from Jackson Zieter, and cut the deficit to 21 points.

It was Szczechowski who scored both Pioneer touchdowns in the second half, as he hit paydirt on

a 12-yard scamper and returned a punt 75 yards for a score.

The Ventures were able to add seven more points before time ran out, thanks to a long pass from quarterback Dylan Gough to Adam Kidder.
