Kiwanis cereal drive great success In early May the Kiwanis of Riverview sponsored a cereal drive, this drive was part of a much larger drive sponsored by Children’s Hospital of Detroit. The Kiwanis of Riverview was just one of many organizations that helped out. The

Riverview Cub Scout Pack 1659, Kiwanis of Woodhaven, I-Heart Radio, and Kroger are all other organization that were involved.

The Kiwanis Club invited all three elementary schools to aid in gathering cereal for the hungry. Huntington,

Forest, and Memorial Elementary Schools did an outstanding job collecting cereal for the needy in the downriver area. At each school the class that collected the most was promised an Icee and Pizza Party.

Huntington school donated the

most cereal of the three Elementary schools. Children’s Hospital of Michigan donated four Detroit Tiger tickets to raffle at the most successful school during the drive. Every student at Huntington had their name in the drawing, which was done on June 8.

Police Department Accepts ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

On May 22, officers from the Riverview Police Department accepted the Ice Bucket Challenge after being nominated by the Wyandotte Police Department. Officers gathered outside of City Hall and took on the challenge one at a time. Each called out others to participate and then collect for ALS research. Thank You to our officers for stepping up to this challenge and the many others they accept every day.

Riverview History With Perry Hello Gerald, I enjoyed your article in the May edition of the Register. I grew up in north Trenton and remember the loud blasts from the quarry at Fort Street and Sibley. My mother mentioned that there used to be houses ringing the quarry, four were moved to nearby Gerald Perry north Trenton-and at least one still stands on Detroit Street.

My sister and I are interested in researching the quarry from its earliest days, but realized this research may have already been done.

Would you happen to know? We can’t find much on the Internet.

Thank you, Janet Cosman-Ross Hi Janet, Thank you for the letter. You stated that you grew up in North Trenton and the Quarry. First of all North Trenton was known as the Village of Sibley incorporated, April, 1921 before it became part of the Village of Trenton, August, 1929.

My research on the Sibley Quarry comes from a number of sources.

One Andrea Mercier, wrote a lot about the history of Downriver, one article delat with “Fame came as early as 1763, through the discovery of the rich limestone quarry near Sibley and Quarry Roads.” Sometime between 1796 and 1856, Solomon Sibley bought out Coopers interest for $12,000. Fredric B. Sibley inherited the Quarry after the death of his father Solomon in 1856. In 1899, Austin Church bought the quarry from F.B. Sibley, as his family had developed a soda plant in Detroit known as “ARM & HAMMER BAKING SODA CO.” A small group of company houses was built and located near the Quarry Entrance on West Jefferson to accommodate the workers, many of whom were immigrants from Italy because of their skills in quarrying.

This group of company homes were known as Fleyville. No one knows when the name was given to the Area.

Much more information can be gotten from the Trenton Memorial Library, especially from a book with

pictures published by the Trenton Civic Commission.

Dear Mr. Perry, I was told my Grandfather, Roy Smith was the first Police Chief, Fire Chief, and also Justice of the Peace of Riverview. Can you please tell me anything you might know about him.

I was also told his brother was Albert Smith for which the High School and Smith Street were named.

Anything you might know about him would be greatly apprecitated as well.

Also can you tell me how I can buy a copy of your book about Riverview?

Thanking you in advance, Karen Smith McNealy Hi Karen, Thank you for the letter. You stated in your letter that “you were told your grandfather was the first Police Chief, Fire Chief of the Village of Riverview.” You were told correctly.

Your Grandfather was a Wayne County Deputy Sheriff Prior to being appointed the First Police Chief of the Village of Riverview May 3, 1923.

All for the salary of $100 per month.

The Village authorized the purchase of a Motorcycle May 15, 1923. It is assumed that Roy used his own gun until, as the record shows, the Village purchasing one, October 20, 1925. Song with being Police Chief, being Fire Chief was additionally his responsibility. And yes your grandfather was a Justice of the Peace later in his years after he left the Police Department. I have a copy of his ledger from 1938 through 1940 when he was Justice of the Peace. It mostly deals with Garnishments. Not much information on why a person was being Garnished.

Roy Smith and Albert E. Smith were brothers and both served in the United States Army. Albert served from about 1912 to 1919. The brothers met up with each other while serving in the Army somewhere in Germany.

The Albert E. Smith School was named after Albert, around 1930. Also Smith street was named after John Smith Member of the First Charter Commission and the First Village Council in the early 20s. He was the Father of Roy & Albert.

CONTINUED form page 1 Many city residents and others filled the park early, as the high school band set up and practiced their songs.

The band sat behind the memorial, which consisted of 17 American flags, 17 chairs, and 17 names of men who lost their lives fighting for our freedom. The men honored, were Riverview citizens, their family and friends attended the ceremony as each soldier was recognized. A photo of each man rested on the chairs, visually identifying the ones who gave their all. The saying of the ceremony, “all give some, some gave all,” reminded the crowd why they were there. Memorial Day is to recognize the soldiers who gave all, and to remember who they were.

The Riverview Police Honor Guard played a role in the ceremony, as well as Keynote Speaker Colonel Mark W. Thompson. Colonel Thompson is a Riverview native, who also graduated second in his class at West Point Academy. The speech given by him recognized the emotion in the air.

“I find this to be a very tough day emotionally,” said Thompson. “As a soldier, I want to honor my fellow soldiers who have given the ultimate sacrifice, but I also find there is great sorrow that makes any ceremony or celebration very difficult.”

The entire event was organized between the American Legion Post 389 and the City of Riverview Recreation Department.

Following the wreath portion of the ceremony Army veteran Gerald Perry read aloud roll call. A rifle salute was given, followed by taps, then “Amazing Grace” on the bagpipes. by Tyge Cawthon.

Magistrate Elizabeth DiSanto for 27th District Court watched the ceremony with her family to support the Riverview community. At the end of the ceremony, Swift invited the crowd to walk along the memorial, and thanked all for attending.

In addition to the 17 American flags situated at the memorial, their were many other flags waving in Young Patriots Park. A circle of flags was placed around the Reflection Pond, each being placed to represent a family member or loved one who was lost in action or has served. It was an absolutely astonishing site that filled you with patriotism.

Saturday 5/2/2018 Type: MDOP On 5/3/18 at 1909 hrs., Officer Lyles received a walk in report of a MDOP at 1~ Brookview Dr. in the City of Riverview, County of Wayne. Officer Lyles interviewed the Victim Jason Johnson.

Johnson stated he parked his 2016 Jeep Compass in the parking lot outside 1~ Brookview Dr. at about 5 p.m. on 5/1/18. Johnson drove the Jeep to work on 5/2/18.

When Johnson arrived he noticed multiple circular shaped scratches in the Jeep’s paint. Johnson stated he came to RIPD directly after work.

Officer Lyles observed the scratches on all the doors, the hood, and the trunk’s lift gate.

Officer Lyles took photographs of the scratches.

Johnson stated his did not have any issues with anyone at this time and did not know who may have put the scratches in the Jeep.

Wednesday: 5/6/18 Type: Larceny from Auto On 5/6/18, at approximately 1130hrs, Officer Thome was dispatched to 17. Matthews St. in The City of Riverview, County of Wayne on a report of a larceny from automobile.

Officer Thome arrived and spoke with Rebecca Eyster, wife of Victim Eyster. Rebecca indicated that she and her husband had come home from a graduation party on 5/6/18 at midnight and had parked the Traverse in the driveway.

Eyster indicated that the vehicle was left unlocked. Eyster stated that her husband found that his

Samsung cell phone was taken from the Traverse today when he went for it at approximately 1130hrs.

Eyster told Officer Thome that spare change was also missing, but the reason for the report was for the cell phone. Eyster had been in contact with Sprint already regarding the cell phone.

Eyster also stated that her Pontiac G6, which was parked in the street, also had loose change stolen from it.

No damage occurred to any vehicle, due to them being unlocked.

Eyster does not have security cameras, nor do any of the neighbors.

Saturday 05/09/2018 Type: Damage to Vehicle On 05/09/2018 the victim, McCarty came into RIPD to report a hit and run that occurred to his vehicle. Between the evening of 05/08/2018 and the early morning hours of 05/09/2018 and unknown suspect driving and unknown vehicle backed into the victim’s vehicle while it was legally parked in front of his residence at 18.

Thursday 05/14/20 Type: Damage to Trailer On 05/14/2018 at 1457 Sgt Pepin was dispatched to the MPI loading dock on a report of damage to a trailer that was being loaded.

Upon arrival Sgt Pepin spoke with the driver; Walker, who stated that the trailer he was towing was damaged in the loading process at MPI. The trailer was being loaded with 45,000 pounds of aluminum blocks over the rear axles. The dock loading crew denies causing the damage in loading the aluminum.

FROM THE DESK OF THE MAYOR

COMMON INQUIRIES Dear Fellow Riverview Residents.

I hope that by now the warm, dry weather has decided to stick around for a while. As promised, I will use this space to respond to questions received by me that the rest of the community may have an interest. The first question was about the status of the Aerius Health facility located Andrew Swift at Fort Street and King Road. As of the writing of this article, the building is complete but still does not qualify for a Certificate of Occupancy. There are just a few issues remaining with the fire suppression system. When those items are resolved, a Certificate of Occupancy will be issued.

The second question dealt with other improvements going on in our city. We continue to work on street sectioning throughout the city. We have repaved several streets on the east side of Fort Street and in the Forest Subdivision in the past few years. There are at least four major business improvement project going on right now. The Riverview Plaza at the north end of Fort Street is well underway. This project will continue throughout the summer. Mid way Fort, the Italian Restaurant will be opening soon. At Fort and Sibley, The Riverview Commons received a new parking lot late last year.

The entire mall is scheduled for a complete facelift this summer or fall.

At the old Firestone plant (MPI) on West Jefferson, a company called WF Whelan is investing millions in its cleanup and improvement to open and import/export business at the site.

In addition, the company formerly known as Ash Stevens located on Krause is also expanding their business with a new laboratory and office space.

The council supported an increase in the recreation budget to get more use out of our parks. This coming summer you will see the return of concerts in the park, movies in the park, more activities, and a new Splash Pad at Memorial Park.

The resident also stated that

“Riverview has not kept pace with creating an environment that attracts potential investors and home buyers.” I told the resident that I tend to disagree with that assessment.

During the housing market decline, Riverview had a significant number of investors purchasing homes, doing some improvements and then renting them out. There were so many we had to adopt a rental inspection program where the owner had to comply with all local codes and ordinances before given of Certificate of Occupancy.

Now that the housing market has improved, many of those homes are being sold. That is great for the city to have owner occupied home. From all that I have seen, when a home goes up for sale in Riverview, it is not on the market long. Sure, there are some exceptions, but in general, our homes are selling well.

Let me wrap up this article with a great big “Thank You” to the Riverview Community School District. The Kiwanis of Riverview recently sponsored a cereal drive to feed the needy. The teachers, staff, students, and parents all pitched in to help. Forest, Memorial, and Huntington Elementary all participated in the drive. The class at each of the schools that collected the most cereal will receive an Icee and Pizza Party for their efforts.

The winning classes were Ms. Master’s second grade class at Forest Elementary, Mrs. Shelton’s second grade class at Memorial, and Ms. Majewska’s fifth grade class at Huntington.

Resident Actively Involved In Supporting Young Girls In Africa

Little Dresses for Africa is a nonprofit organization that focuses on providing clean water, education and safe communities to vulnerable children in Africa. It was founded by Rachel O’Neill and has been running for a strong 10 years.

Although they do many things, one of the organization’s most notable acts of charity is creating youth sized dresses out of pillowcases and other

“80 percent of the children in the orphanage had malaria,” said Carole “and it’s not like you can get any sort of professional medical care nearby.”

She continued to say “It’s a different world, but we do really make a difference.”

The road is especially tough for little girls and young women. Often small children are left as primary caregivers of younger children,

simple materials. Many volunteers sew the dresses themselves, while other volunteers pack and ship the dresses. Some even go over to Africa themselves.

New or gently used pillowcases are readily available in brightly colored patterns, making them an idea and affordable material. The sun dress style is suitable for the hot climates, and the hem is already in place. The pattern is simple enough for even a novice seamstress.

Riverview resident Carole McGovern is a long standing member of the organization. In addition to many years preparing and shipping dresses, as well as much needed supplies, she has made the trip to Africa herself on three occasions.

Carole has donated two wells during her trips over the Atlantic.

Something that she feels is just as important as those wells is the medical aid she has helped provide.

Carole recalled a trip they made out to an orphanage during one visit.

The Riverview Kiwanis have been sponsoring this dinner for the at least 10 years. This is one of many programs put on by the Kiwanis to help promote community pride while recognizing the hard work of the students and the parents that push them to be their best.

As part of the program the students had to acknowledge what their favorite high school experience was and what university they will be attending. The class sponsors, Guidance Director Mrs. Catherine Pierson and Academic Advisor, Ms Lindsay Mieden presented the students their Academic Excellence Awards on behalf of the Kiwanis.

Culinary Capers

Finally! Old Man Winter has returned to the North Pole (good riddance!), and the barbecue season is in full swing.

If you will be hosting a cookout or need recipes for a potluck picnic, read on for some that are tried and true.

The first was shared by the late Dave Herbst, a publicist at Walt Disney World, during one of my visits to the favorite vacation destination. Made in a crockpot, it is great to take to a Evelyn Cairns potluck.

To save time and trouble, I used precooked bacon slices, zapping them in the microwave as suggested to crisp before dicing. And unless you can stand the heat, reduce the amount of hot picante sauce or substitute medium or mild. Everyone who has sampled this, gave it a thumbs up.

DAVE HERBST’S CROCKPOT BEANS ½ to 1 pound ground beef ¾ pound bacon, partially frozen, then diced 1 cup chopped onions 3 cans (1 pound each, or whatever they weight now) pork and beans 2 cans (1-pound each) red kidney beans 12-ounce package frozen fordhook lima beans, thawed 1-pound can diced petite tomatoes, very well drained 1 cup or less hot picante sauce (or medium or mild) 1 tablespoon liquid smoke 3 tablespoons vinegar ¼ cup brown sugar Brown beef, using a small amount of oil if necessary, then place in crockpot. Brown bacon and onions, drain off fat, then add bacon and onions to crockpot. Add pork and beans, kidney beans, lima beans, tomatoes, picante sauce, liquid smoke, vinegar and brown sugar.

Cook on low for 8 hours.

• The following bean salad has to be the easiest side dish ever to make for a barbecue or picnic. It may seem too sweet when you first taste it, but samplers agreed that it’s just right

after the second day.

EASIEST 4-BEAN SALAD 14.5 oz. can cut green beans 14.5 oz. can wax beans 16 oz. can dark-red kidney beans 16-oz can garbanzo beans 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon pepper (yes, that’s correct) 1/2 cup diced red or green pepper ½ cup diced onion ½ cup vinegar ½ cup salad oil 1/2 cup sugar Drain beans; add diced red or green pepper and onions. Combine remaining ingredients and add. Stir well and refrigerate for 2 or 3 days before serving. ~~~ And now for the piece de resistance!

When I once passed along a request for a strawberry pie recipe containing, Jell-O, fresh strawberries and Cool Whip, I received 60 responses (I counted them), some from as far away as Kentucky and West Virginia!

Many were similar, but the most appealing was Mrs. Frances Dentico of Wyandotte’s version, which was described as “just like Big Boy’s.” It is, except that hers is firmer, so cut down on the cornstarch if you want it to be more like Big Boy’s. I used a Pillsbury refrigerated crust, and a star tip to amateurishly decorate the top with Cool Whip. So-o-o-o-o delicious and super simple!

MRS DENTICO’S SIMPLE STRAWBERY PIE 1 cup sugar 1 package Strawberry Jell-O 3 tablespoons cornstarch 1 cup boiling water 1 quart whole strawberries, washed and tops cup off 1 baked pie shell Combine sugar, Jell-O and cornstarch in a saucepan. Stir in boiling water. Boil 1 minute. Let cool. Arrange strawberries in pie shell. Pour mixture over berries and refrigerate until filling is firm. Serve with Cool Whip or whipped cream. ~ HAPPY EATING!

Legacy Church to Host Youth end of year thoughts Vacation Bible School Another school year comes to a close. For our students and their families, that means a time of transition. Transition from lessons and homework to swim suits and baseball gloves. Transition from short, cold days to long, sunny days. This is a time for our students to look back with pride on another year of growth and learning and Russ Pickell to look forward with anticipation to a new year of opportunity and exciting challenges as they continue along their educational journey.

For our teachers, administrators and staff, the close of another school year means a time of preparation for the coming fall. We will be working hard this summer to prepare classrooms and lessons for another year of growth and opportunity.

For others it means continued training in a career technical program. Some will join the military and others will join the work force. Regardless of the next phase of their journey, we send with them our best wishes and sincere hopes for a better tomorrow.

Legacy Church will be holding their vacation bible school from Monday, June 25 through Thursday, June 28. The camp promises four days of fun, faith, music and sports. Each day the camp will from 8:30am until 12:30pm.

Pastor Phillip Rogers of Legacy Church and his wife Michelle are very involved as parents at Memorial Elementary where Phillip has served as a Watchdog for five years. Their children, Josiah and Lydia attend there. He has also coached in the Riverview City children’s basketball league for four years.

Riverview Teacher Leaders Complete Academy For the past two school years, seven of Riverview’s outstanding teachers participated in an elite program sponsored

by Wayne County RESA (Regional Educational Service Agency). Organized and led by notable educator Syndee Malek, the Teacher Leaders Academy offered a wealth of experiences to teachers who chose to embrace the extra effort to improve their personal educational leadership capabilities.

Ryan DiBrano, a history teacher from RCHS, Amy Farkas, a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) teacher from Seitz, Kristi Kucia, s special education instructor from Memorial, and Michon Lince, a social studies / government teacher from RCHS took part in the RESA Teacher Leaders Academy. They were joined by Katy Olsen, a special -education teacher from Memorial, Brenda Said-Wright, elementary Literacy Coach and former Forest primary grade teacher, and Amy Wassick, a fifth-grade teacher at Forest.

For two years, these teachers attended workshops, seminars, and conferences at RESA and in different parts of the state of

Michigan. Most of these events took place after school, on Saturdays, and during the summer, so that class time lost was minimal. They completed book studies and were tutored by nationally recognized educators and pedagogical speakers. They also participated in discussion boards, professional learning communities, and collaborative meetings to brainstorm best practices and wellresearched strategies to improve education in Riverview, along with honing leadership proficiency in themselves.

On Tuesday, May 1, Riverview’s teacher leaders, along with cohorts from other Wayne County districts, were recognized and congratulated on their graduation from this prestigious academy. Michael Fullan, an esteemed educational author and speaker, keynoted the day-long honorary conference held at banquet center in Livonia. This conference was also attended by board members and Central Office Administrators, who witnessed and accepted, with great pride, the advanced leadership skills of the seven graduates of the RESA Teacher Leaders Academy.

Notable Seitz musician wins first chair honors in Michigan’s All State Concert Band.

After intense competitive auditioning, Aubrey Diebold, an 8th grader from Seitz Middle School, was chosen to be one of eight French horn players in the Michigan All State Middle School Band. Auditions were held at twelve locations across the state, and approximately 100 middle school students were selected to be members of this band.

This year marked Aubrey’s second time being chosen for this prestigious group of musicians. Last year, as a seventh grader, she was third chair in a group or eight French horn players, and this year she was selected as first chair ofall middle school musicians who tried out and were selected.

In addition to this honor, Aubrey recently auditioned and was appointed to an honors band that will play at Carnegie Hall in New York City this summer. Aubrey also plays tenor horn for Motor City Youth Brass Band in Southfield, Michigan and Sousaphone for her school’s marching band.

Aubrey dedicates many hours each week to practice with her instruments and she shares credit for her success with her school music instructors, Ms. Jessi Walsh and Mr. Bill Beson, her private instructor, Jennifer Kmet, and the Riverview School District’s band program. Next year, she will take the field as a freshman member of the RCHS Marching Pirates, and she will also participate in the school’s Symphonic and Jazz Bands.

summer water usage Now that summer is about here, most residents will use more water for things like watering the grass, flowers, gardens, washing vehicles and filling pools. It is important to remember that this increased usage can significantly increase your water bill as compared to the rest of the year.

Outdoor watering Most outdoor activities will be done with a garden hose that can use 12 to 25 gallons a minute or more. If your garden hose output is 15 gallons a minute that equals 23₵ a minute or $13.80 an hour. When finished with the use of your garden hose please be sure to shut it off at the hose bib valve on the house, periodically throughout the year please check for leaks from the hose bib with the garden hose disconnected.

Sprinkler systems If you have a sprinkler system, please do not guess or rely on manufacturer’s claims of what your sprinkler system uses. The only way to know for sure is to write down the meter reading before your system starts and then after it has completed all zones; the difference of those readings will be the total gallons used.

An average sprinkler system uses 12 gallons per minute (GPM) per zone. A typical lawn with four zones, watering for twenty minutaes each time, will use 960 gallons each day. Watering three times a week over a three-month period would result in an additional $500 each quarter in your water bill.

Pools On hot summer days it is possible for your pool to lose as much as ¼” of water per day from evaporation not including splash out. Please be conscious of how much water your pool is really using. You can use the same method as you would for a sprinkler system for calculating the water usage.

Homes Toilets are one of the largest contributors to high bills; they can use large amounts of water if they are not in proper working order. Two of the most common problems with toilets are the float is not set correctly and/or failed flappers. Even if your toilet is in proper working condition, older toilets can cost as much as .11 cents per flush versus newer ones that are 1.5 gallons or less per flush costing .02 cents. Older shower heads use much more water 7-10 GPM versus newer ones at 2-4 GPM.

Fireworks: Use Wisely Fireworks are permissible on the day before, the day of and the day after a national holiday between the hours of 8 AM and 12 AM (to 1 AM New Year’s day ONLY); and only on private property (with the owner’s permission). Use of City Property (parks and streets, etc.) is strictly prohibited.

The best rules to follow are: n Never allow young children to play with or ignite fireworks. n Avoid buying fireworks that are packaged in brown paper because this is often a sign that the fireworks were made for professional displays and that they could pose a danger to consumers. n Always have an adult supervise fireworks activities. Parents may not realize that young children suffer injuries from sparklers. Sparklers burn at temperatures of about 2,000 degrees - hot enough to melt some metals. n Never place any part of your body directly over a fireworks device when lighting the fuse. Back up to a safe distance immediately after lighting fireworks. n Never try to re-light or pick up fireworks that have not ignited fully. n Never point or throw fireworks at another person. n Keep a bucket of water or garden hose handy in case of fire mishap. n Light fireworks one at a time, then move back quickly. n Never carry fireworks in a pocket or shoot them off in metal or glass containers. n After fireworks complete their burning, douse the spent device with plenty of water from a bucket or hose before discarding it to prevent a trash fire. n Make sure fireworks are legal in your area before buying or using them.

Riverview Girls Halt Rivals Winning Streak

Heading into Wednesday night at Riverview, Grosse Ile had won 39 consecutive Huron League games and had played 87 league contests without a defeat.

The host Pirates, led by Lily Wojtowicz, brought both streaks to a screeching halt.

The junior netted one goal in each half en route to the victory, which was Riverview’s first over Grosse Ile in six years.

“We were very hungry for a win against them, it’s been a while,” said Pirates Coach Stevie Burns. “Especially with it being our Senior Night, we definitely wanted to send the seniors out on a good note. Those seniors haven’t beaten Grosse Ile in their careers, so that was huge.”

Wojtowicz put Riverview (12-4-1, 9-3-1 Huron League) up 1-0 with a goal about 13 minutes into the game. She cashed in after teammate Sam Dorn had launched a ball that came down near the Grosse Ile (16-1, 12-1 Huron League) goal.

The Devils, who had already clinched a share of the Huron League title, evened things up five minutes into the second half when Lindsay Miles got a shot past Pirates goalkeeper Mallory Gardocki for her 13th goal of the season.

The visitors continued to apply pressure and generated some scoring chances.

Only a minute after the Miles goal, a shot from Brooklyn Donckers sailed just over the net. Roughly 10 minutes later Donckers had a shot roll just wide of the post.

Along the way Gardocki came up with some big stops, as well, and finished the game with 10 total saves.

Around the halfway mark of the second half, momentum seemed to shift.

Wojtowicz had two breakaways within three minutes, but missed out on scoring both times. The second breakaway came after she stole a pass with about 18 minutes left on the clock.

But just a minute later she got a shot off from near the right sideline.

This time the ball went over the outstretched hands of goalkeeper Chandler Donckers and sailed into the net to put the hosts up 2-1.

Grosse Ile had only given up one goal all season before Wednesday night.

Chandler Donckers, who has 14 shutouts this year, made five saves against the Pirates in the contest.

The Devils made a push to tie the game late, but Riverview was able to hold them off and went on to celebrate the one-goal victory.

Overall, Grosse Ile has captured its seventh consecutive league title and is ranked among the top teams in the state in Division 3. Wednesday’s defeat came just ahead of the district playoffs, which kick off Tuesday, May 29.

“We needed to get our heads straight,” said Devils Coach Amy Rossow. “At least we lost to a good team. They came out and performed well and there’s nothing to be ashamed about. But we do have things to work on and hopefully it helps the kids to realize what they have to work on.”

The Devils were scheduled to host Carleton Airport the next day to wrap up the regular season. A victory would clinch the outright league title. Riverview was set to to visit Monroe Jefferson on Friday.

BACK TO BACK DISTRICT CHAMPIONS

Two determined Downriver teams went head to head on Friday for the Division 2, District championship at Grosse Ile. A pair of fifth-inning runs for the Pirates was ultimately the difference, as the team held on for a 2-0 victory over the Trojans.

With the win, Riverview (22-9) advanced to face Tecumseh in the first round of regionals on Saturday, June 9 at Monroe Jefferson.

Ahead of the championship game on Friday, Trenton edged host Grosse Ile 3-2 in a semifinal.

The Bucs didn’t play in the semis due to a forfeit by Dearborn Heights Annapolis.

Overall, the big crowd on hand for the title game saw a pitchers’ duel between Riverview’s Garrett Davis and the Trojans’ Zack Perkins. Both hurlers went the distance and each threw fewer than 80 pitches.

Davis struck out three batters, walked two and allowed six hits on the way to his fourth completegame shutout of the season.

Perkins had one strikeout and allowed one earned run, one walk and five hits. He also hit two batters, which quickly came back to haunt him.

Perkins plunked Riverview’s Cameron Rogers to lead off the bottom of the fifth and two batters later he hit Andrew Love.

A base hit from Angelo Singleton put the Bucs in a bases-loaded situation with only one out.

Next up was Kyle Naif, who hit a ball just over the head of second baseman Ian Lozon and knocked in Singleton for the game’s first run.

An error on a ball hit by Joe Johnson allowed Love to race home and put Riverview up 2-0.

“This is kind of how it’s been all year,” said Bucs Coach Chris Haut. “This team has always worked really hard. This is the kind of game we play.

We pitch really well-Garrett threw an absolutely phenomenal game-and we put the ball in play and make things happen.”

In the top of the sixth, Trenton’s Robert Barker drew a two-out walk. Matt Kibby was up next and sent a hard-hit ball out to center field. Love was in position for the Bucs and made a nice grab before it sailed past him.

The Riverview defense also turned a pair of double plays in the contest.

With one last chance for the Trojans, Brandon Brushaber led off the top of the seventh with a single. However, Davis retired the next three batters, including a game-ending strikeout.

“We’ve been working in the offseason and this is how it pays off,” Davis said. “We get to bring home the trophy. We feel like we can hang with anybody and we’re excited to go.”

Despite the defeat for Trenton, coach Todd Szalka was impressed with his team on Friday.

“I told the kids, when we met after the game, that I’ve never been prouder of a group of kids coming off a loss as I am with the way that they played today,” he said. “…They did everything that we asked them to do all season and it just didn’t work out.”

Riverview’s regional semifinal battle with Tecumseh is set for 10 a.m. at Jefferson. The winner will play either Carleton Airport or Ann Arbor

In Trenton’s 3-2 win over Grosse Ile in the semifinals, it was Kyle Richey who came up big for the squad.

Richey started on the mound and threw 5.2 innings en route to the victory.

At the plate he hit a second-inning double that drove in Barker and Lozon and put the Trojans up 2-0 at the time.

On the hill, Richey struck out two batters and allowed one earned run, four hits and five walks.

One of those walks went to Grosse Ile’s Bradley Vella in the bottom of the fourth inning.

He advanced to second on a single from Zak Thompson and moved to third after Trenton turned a double play. With two outs, Vella scored on an error on a ball hit by Collin Bammer.

One inning later, Justin Riggs drew a walk for the Red Devils and was driven in by Nate Brown to tie the game at 2-2.

Barker led off the sixth inning for Trenton by reaching on an error and gave his squad a 3-2 lead.

After the run, the Trojans still had runners at second and third, with only one out, but starting pitcher Richardo Madrigal was able to work out of the jam.

Overall, Madigral threw a complete game and allowed only one earned run. He struck out four batters, walked four and allowed five hits.

Grosse Ile threatened in the bottom of the sixth after Chase Yops singled and Matt Groat walked.

With the two runners on, and two outs, Jake Kowalski relieved Richey and promptly struck out the first hitter he faced. In the seventh Kowalski retired the side in order and picked up the save.

The Rising Epidemic of Text Neck

T

he digital age has allowed us to be more mobile, but it is also creating a considerable amount of health related problems through our increasing use of handheld devices.

A phenomenon, called Text Neck, has been coined Dr. Michael Concessi as the term that Riverview Chiropacctor describes the problems caused from prolonged usage of electronic devices such as smartphones, tablets, laptops and gaming devices. More than 2 trillion text messages were sent in the US in 2011, which equates to more than 6 billion text messages sent per day, or 180 billion per month. Text messaging users send or receive an average of 35 messages per day.

Just look around and what do you see? People are looking down at their smartphones, texting or checking out the most recent activity of the Kardashians. Children slumped over, looking at an electronic tablet playing a game or watching a video on YouTube. All this prolonged time spent looking down with forward head posture, FHP, has resulted in chronic muscle strain of the neck and upper back.

As a chiropractor of 30 plus years, I have treated my share of patients with neck problems as a result of FHP. The normal neck should have a forward c-type curve to it, but due to prolonged FHP over time, the ligaments of the neck become weak and a reverse of the normal neck curve develops. This leads to FHP related problems including, but not limited to: headaches, neck pain, disc bulges, shoulder pain, numbness and tingling in the arms and hands, and pinched nerves. Over the past 10 years I have seen a tremendous rise in FHP related problems. What was once a problem I treated primarily in adult patients, is now becoming a common problem in younger patients.

Headaches and neck pain are literally becoming an epidemic with our teenage and younger individuals.

Mobile devices are being used by kids as young as 2 years old.

Text messaging users send or receive an average of 35 messages per day.

Prolonged time spent on smartphones, tablets, laptops and gaming devices that are practically tethered to our kids continues to grow. Studies show that as of 2015 the average time spent on electronic devices was approximately 5.5 hours per day and growing. That is a lot of time looking down! It is time to take control.

Parents teach kids the difference between right and wrong, to sit up straight and stop slouching. Today should be no different. We need to make changes now, in our own and our children’s lifestyle, or we will be in for a rude awaking. Poor posture does not only look bad, but bad habits will lead to a number of musculoskeletal problems down the road. In addition increased electronic time has been associated with obesity, sleep deprivation, aggression, attention deficit, delayed development and diminished social skills.

Local is the New Black; Authentic is Better

y now, it might be occurring to you that I am against shopping at operations that are Wall Street based, be they national chains or internet sellers. I’m not anti-WallStreet per se, but because more money circulates in the area in which I live and work and play, I selfishly choose “local” as often as possible, and that benefits Peter Rose ME. I think most of us do what is best for our own best interests, yes?

When I joined the world of retail as a career, my stores were part of a network of independents across the nation, and nationals were virtually nonexistent. During this past 45 years, local stores have mostly been supplanted by publicly traded entities. The vast majority of locals are gone, and now those nationals are all collapsing, because what they offer isn’t good enough to compete against the Amazons of the world, and there isn’t enough demand, anyway.

Lousy retail caused the elimination of excellent retail, and is now imploding into itself, as it should.

I feel so sorry for them (yeah, right).

As bad as they felt about taking away the market from the family businesses that preceded them.

So many nameplates are gone, lost to “progress” brought about by malls and national chains to fill them. A few locals survived, and a few brave souls open new operations, but the percentages are shrinking fast.

The rallying cry has to be survival of the fittest. But the fittest means the wealthiest; wealth from investors that, essentially, are betting on a hefty return from the proposition that existing businesses will be out-spent and will fail. “Ka-Ching” for the investor, calamity for the regions in which those investors live, work, play and raise families. Here again: A massive disconnect between actions and results has taken place. I love finding a new, local restaurant that surprises and satisfies, don’t you? Nice, appreciative service, cool environment with particular quirkiness, as opposed to a

It is a better experience that I seek, and I get satisfaction in rewarding them and enabling their success and growth.

While I would be happy for Bell’s Beer owners if they cashed out and captured a healthy reward for their efforts to create something better than was there before, I would get much less pleasure out of drinking said beer that was now just another name-plate under the Budweiser banner. I’d seek the next effort!

Kerrytown in Ann Arbor, all local, is energizing. Walking through any mall at all is depressing, one innocuous format after another, all designed to get me to buy for the sake of buying.

“Lifestyle Centers” don’t fool me, either - 100% corporate. Don’t we all want more authenticity?

So yeah, no question, I have a bias.

My intent in this column is to get even one more person to agree about these points, and to make more conscious choices that reward uniqueness and grass roots capitalism over predatory formulaic invasions that destroy capitalism for CAPITALISM. My stores are included in my mission, but it is a nationwide scourge that I seek to push back against as hard as I know how. Saving Small and authentic, saving downtowns that I love.

Online shopping continues to balloon. I have no illusions that the trends will reverse. But I also have no intention of just withering away without a peep. I won’t spend a dime helping them dismantle America’s independent businesses. Maybe I can recruit more acolytes for Independent.

The predatory elimination of all smaller competition, resulting in higher prices and fewer choices once that competition is gone.... Is NOT progress. Be aware, and beware. And don’t say I didn’t warn you.
