or the past six years Riverview students have taken part and competed amongst other Downriver schools in the Grosse Ile Nature & Land Conservation photo contest called “Take It Outside.” Every year the photos are astonishing and RCHS has placed several winners. This year, despite the most difficult scenarios, sophomore student Sophia Kandes won the grand prize out of all entries, a Riverview first! She also took home a third-place award for her fire photo in the Fascinating Category. Congrats to all the winners and a special thank you to the members of GILNC for hourly inviting us each year. *Includes We heard the judges were tough, but Riverview outshined the rest with these awesome photos. FROM THE DESK OF THE MAYOR
Say a prayer for those affected by Covid 19
My fellow Riverview residents, it looks like we’re coming out of the Covid-19 Pandemic with the state loosening many of the restrictions imposed on us. But before we celebrate, please take a moment to say a prayer for all those Riverview families that lost a loved one to the virus. If there was ever a andrew time to look forward to swift summer, this is it. Your city council has decided to move forward with as many activities outside as we can safely do. As I’m sitting here writing this article, the sights and sounds of the Riverview Veterans Memorial Ceremony are still fresh in my mind. The breath-taking sight of nearly three hundred American flags flying proudly around the Reflection Pond, Riverview’s Police Department Honor Guard standing at attention, and the sound of Amazing Grace being played by a bagpiper are enough to stir some pretty strong emotions in anyone. By now you may have received a post card from the Department of Public Services, Environmental Services Division of Wayne County. They are looking for input from you about the proposed landfill expansion. We know you understand the importance of the expansion as the income from the land preserve provides nearly 30 percent of our budgeted revenues. One of the many benefits of having our own landfill is that Riverview residents don’t pay for trash pickup and disposal. Our surrounding communities pay somewhere in the neighborhood of $300,000 for this service. We ask that you email the county at ESGHelp@waynecounty.com and voice your support. The county needs to know that this request has the support of our residents. With the lifting of most of the Covid restrictions we are returning to a modified normal. Summerfest is right around the corner, June 17-19. Many of your favorite rides will return, although a little farther apart, along with a midway to test your gaming skills.
One major difference is that the Ceaser’s Capital Management Fireworks display will be held Saturday. And for all the new residents who’ve asked, “Where is the best spot to view the fireworks?” the answer is simple: Young Patriot’s Park. The Park is large enough to do whatever social distancing you’re comfortable with. Parking may be an issue with this popular event so we suggest car pooling or riding your bicycle to the park. One outdoor activity that has thrived despite the pandemic is golf. Riverview has taken full advantage of this by investing in massive improvements to our golf course. The greens and the fairways (and the bunkers) are in the best shape they’ve ever been in. The Riverview Highlands has become one of the premier golf courses in southeast Michigan. We’ve recently received 110 brand new golf carts. These unique carts include a rain cover for your clubs and a USB port for your phone. To provide top quality customer service to our golfers we’ve added two new beverage carts. With sponsorships from Lyon’s Towing and Al’s Asphalt, these beverage carts come at no cost to the city. Returning this year at the end of this month is the 2021 Riverview Highlands Invitational. This first-class golf outing was a complete success last year. Proceeds from this event help pay for all the improvements that have been and continue to take place. This invitational includes breakfast, a Bloody Mary & Juice Bar, driving range and putting green to help the golfers warm up. Play begins with an 8:30 scramble shotgun start. There will be two oncourse food stations, open beverage carts and on-course contests. And if that doesn’t pique your interest there is a sit-down dinner with open bar. The event wraps up at 3 p.m. with an award ceremony. For more information, please call the General Manager & Director of Golf Mr. Mike Kettler at 734-281-4255.

Huntington students think about their futures Huntington Elementary School 5th-graders have been exploring numerous careers. The project started with students taking a career interest survey and using their results to research a career of their choice.
Students have been exploring all components of the career including the training and education, work environment, career opportunities and more. In addition, students created their first resume, highlighting their skills and achievements.
Congratulations Seniors and four-year RCHS DECA members Jake Leidner and Collin Schacht competed in the International Career Development Conference virtually in April. This is the first year RCHS has had students qualify for this conference.
The 5th-graders will be dressing up and displaying their projects for other Huntington students.

Thanks Riverview, it was an amazing school year My name is Gary Betway and I have been teaching math at Riverview Community High School (RHCS) since 1999. This school year was so different from any other, I wanted to share a bit of my experience. My focus on RCHS is only because that is where I am and in no way do I mean to ignore the experiences and accomplishments of our other schools in the district. First, let me say that I have never been prouder to be a Riverview Pirate. Many school districts choose to go fully remote. Our district banded together and forged a different path. With the support of the Riverview Board of Education, Superintendent Russell Pickell created the District COVID-19 School Re-entry Task Force to plan our way forward. The Task Force created a zero-transmission plan that enabled us to meet faceto face over the entire year (except a short period mandated by the governor). I have some experience with remote education…I guess we all do now. While remote education can be meaningful and has its advantages, it is not for everyone. I am proud that we, Riverview Community Schools and the families that make it up, were able to offer effective, student-centered, in-person education to our students in the midst of everything. I’m proud that we were able to offer an environment in which the social aspects of education could take place. Isolation can be difficult on people. Being around our friends enriches our support systems. Last year, I was able to start a new partnership with Ferris State University in which we can teach FSU courses for FSU credit right here on our RCHS campus. The first course we offered was MATH 220 Calculus 1. Not only were we able to continue the program during this crazy year, but we expanded the program to include MATH 125 College Algebra. Ferris State was comfortable expanding our
program due to the robust nature of the educational program we provided this year. While I am the one that taught the courses, I could have not done so without a tremendous amount of support. I received this support from many directions. The Riverview Board of Education and Superintendent Pickell supported and enabled the program. Principal Joseph Hatzl and Assistant Principal Andrew Zulewski created the framework and ensured the materials and infrastructure were in place. Rod Flint, Julie Karl and Michelle Corso made it possible to fill the classes and register the students. Most of all, the students and parents guaranteed the success of the program by their determination and their flexibility. Please join me in recognizing the following students that successfully earned both RCHS and FSU credit for the following courses: MATH 125 (College Algebra) Emma Bell , Lauren Beneteau, Alyssa Brooks, TyKeria CarterCrosby, Renee Daniel, Megan DeLorme, Katherine Finley, Ethan Hiltz, Alexandra Kasprzyk, Veronica Korkis, Joshua Lee, Angelina Ortiz, Daniel Perez, Nicholai Powell, Melanie Selonke, Gustavo Soto, Adari Torres, Alexis Tyslicki and Nora White. MATH 220 (Calculus 1) Komal Azhar, Kristina Dama, Francesca DePaulis Calista Felice, Grace Godlewski, Scott Grunwald, Angelina Hamblin, Maya Landry, Adrianna Latorre, Joshua Lavrack, Leah Mirch, Emillee Monohan, Zachary Philips, Eric Pickell, Gunnar Pirtle, Samuel Polgar and Caemlyn Troutman. I love my job. I work with outstanding people. I have the best students. And this all flows out of a GREAT community. I thank you all for a great year and look forward to another one! Enjoy your summer and be proud of what you accomplished!

Businesses find value in sponsoring Highlands beverage carts Two local businesses that appreciate the improvements at Riverview Highlands Golf Club said they are pleased to sponsor new beverage carts on the city-owned golf course. Tim Lyons of Lyons Towing and Ed Swanson of Al’s Asphalt Paving Co. have agreed to pay a sponsorship fee to put their company names on the beverage carts that serve golfers every day the course is open. “Everybody on the DAVE GORGON golf courses on hot days, Riverview especially, is looking Register for the beverage carts to buy water, pop, beef, liquor or wine,” said Assistant City Manager Jeffrey Dobek. “Now they’ll be looking for an Al’s Asphalt cart or a Lyons Towing cart, which are brand new. Their sponsorship allows us to offset the cost of the carts. In theory, they’ll be seen by 40,000 golfers each golf season.” Both long-time Downriver-based businesses have served Riverview for decades. Lyons Towing has a reputation of providing a level of individual care and customized service at reasonable prices. Lyons provides heavy-duty and light-duty towing, vehicle recovery, trucking and other services throughout the Downriver and beyond. “Lyons Towing has been family owned and operated Downriver since 1960,” said co-owner Tim Lyons. “We have expanded our business throughout the years and are fortunate enough to be able to contribute to all of our communities whenever possible. Riverview Highlands has also been around for a long time and is well established in the community. They are currently investing in the course and infrastructure and it shows.” Al’s Asphalt provides asphalt services in Southeast Michigan, Northern Ohio and Northern Indiana. The company offers preventative maintenance, site evaluation, asphalt repair, new construction, resurfacing, crack filling, seal coating, concrete work and asphalt patching services. The company, founded in 1965, provided cart path and parking lot improvements at Riverview Highlands.

“Al’s has been committed to doing improvements all over the Downriver area,” said President Ed Swanson. “We’ve done a great deal of work in the City of Riverview. It makes sense to reinvest in the communities in which we’ve done a lot of work. What better place to partner with than the golf course in which we’ve done a lot of work on the cart paths and parking lots?”
Riverview Mayor Andrew Swift thanked the two businesses for their support. “On behalf of the City Council and myself, I’d like to thank Lyons Towing and Al’s Asphalt for their sponsorship of our golf course beverage carts,” he said. “These two companies know the value of a quality partnership. And we look forward to partnering with them for years to
come. We’ll make sure their names get in front of thousands of golfers a year and they’ll help us with the cost of the beverage carts.” The beverage carts will be staffed by Riverview golf employees. To book a tee time or get more information about Riverview Highlands’ golf services, visit the website www.riverviewhighlands. com.

Since starting his job with the City of Riverview in 2019, Jeff Dobek has made a point of meeting the residents of Riverview to hear their ideas and concerns. Dobek, Riverview’s assistant city manager and manager of the Riverview Land Preserve (RLP), has learned a lot about the community and its people. “Something can be sitting right in front of you, but because people are living busy lives, they don’t see it for what it is,” he said. “The Riverview Land Preserve is a good example.” Dobek said most people who live in the Downriver area know the Land Preserve as a facility that does the necessary job of safely disposing of the waste we generate in our daily lives. And the RLP has done a great job of that for 52 years. There is, he says, much more to the story. “I want to make sure Riverview’s taxpayers know what the Riverview Land Preserve contributes to keeping Riverview a safe and affordable place to live,” said Mayor Andrew Swift. “It’s especially important now. We need to get approval to expand the landfill or it will have to close in a few years. Our taxpayers need to understand the impact that would have on their community.” For example, the RLP is a regional resource serving 16 Downriver communities. The significance of that to Riverview residents is that the revenue generated from the landfill is a vital part of keeping Riverview safe and property taxes lower. • The RLP provides 25% of the City of Riverview’s operating budget. • Without the RLP, the city would need to raise property taxes by 11 mills to replace that revenue—or slash the size of the fire and police forces keeping the city safe. • Those funds are used for fire and police protection, along with parks and recreation services - all of which are 100 percent paid for with property taxes in other communities. • These lower property taxes, in turn, support higher property values. • Also, Riverview residents receive free trash pick-up. “Just as a pocketbook issue, I think the benefits of the expansion are clear to our residents,” Dobek said. “But the benefits run much deeper.” To begin with, the Land Preserve generates
millions of dollars in fees to support Wayne County household recycling and enrichment programs such as Community Shred Day each fall. Protecting our environment while supporting residents’ disposal needs is a priority. RLP also produces affordable renewable energy for Downriver. RLP’s landfill gas-to-energy system collects enough gas to provide electricity to 3,700 homes every year and is sold to DTE Energy. RLP creates and sustains good-paying jobs. More than 30 people are employed by the RLP. Through its purchasing, the Land Preserve supports
many businesses Downriver. RLP also supports the quality of life in the region. To begin with, RLP is an educational resource for school districts, universities and civic groups. Money generated by the Land Preserve supports recreational parks and facilities that serve youth organizations such as the Riverview Junior Football Association (RJFA) and Riverview Baseball & Softball Association (RBSA), which utilize the local fields in Riverview for organized practices and games throughout the year. Additionally, the Skyhawks Soccer Tots Program, Skyhawks Basketball Program and Skyhawks Flag Football programs utilize athletic fields in Young Patriots Park to develop athletic skills and social values, such as teamwork, respect, and sportsmanship, for children ages 3 to 12. Residents will remember that Riverview has attempted to expand its landfill in the past, only to be rejected. Dobek said that Riverview listened to the community and made important operational upgrades to ensure that the RLP is a good neighbor. These upgrades include: • Placing litter fencing to prevent blowing debris. • Improving daily and slope cover.
• Purchasing new equipment to clean track-out onto roads. • Heavily investing in additional landfill gas control infrastructure. “Jeff Dobek has done a yeoman’s job in the last 18 months. He has led the substantial improvements in odor control and resident communication,” said Mayor Swift. “His leadership can give residents confidence that the Riverview Land Preserve will continue to be a good neighbor.” Dobek said that the proposed expansion, which must be approved by the Wayne County Facility Inclusion Committee, would provide about 15 years of additional disposal capacity, on top of the eight to 10 years that are estimated to remain. The expansion RLP has proposed is a 45-acre extension eastward (but still within the boundaries of the landfill) to extend the life of the landfill. “The community should know that the landfill will not get any higher,” Dobek said. “Just as importantly, we will not increase our daily intake from the current 3,000 tons per day. We can only handle a set number of trucks per day and that number would not increase with this expansion.” A copy of the application package is available for public review at the Riverview Public Library, 14300 Sibley Road, and on the Wayne County website at: – www.waynecounty.com/doe/solid-waste-planning Dobek said many residents have asked him how they can get involved in the extension of RLP. “The most important thing people can do is be an advocate for the Riverview Land Preserve,” he said. “We provide a tremendous community benefit and have taken significant steps to be a better neighbor in the last few years. We’d ask residents who agree with us to write to the Wayne County Facility Inclusion Committee.” The email address for comments is pcullen@ waynecounty.com. “Between now and July, there will be a lot of communication about this issue,” Dobek said. “There will also be a public hearing and other chances to show your support. We’d ask residents to stay engaged and speak out about the value of the Riverview Land Preserve to this community. Working together, we can ensure that we continue to enjoy the benefits of this special facility.

Classic cars and golf, what could be better? A new golf outing is headed to the Riverview Highlands this July. This outing promises to be one of the most unique outings ever to take place at The Highlands. It’s called “Clubs and Chrome Golf and Car Show” and it is the brainchild of Riverview’s new assistant city manager and Mayor Andy Swift. “I’m constantly looking for ways to show off our golf course and this seems like a great way to do it,” said Swift. He added, “Some good friends of mine, Vilma and Tom Smathers are the owners of Crusin’ Classics Agency. When we approached them about sponsoring such an event, they jumped all over it.” The outing will take place on Saturday, July 31, from 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. The “Chrome” portion of the outing will take place in the parking lot of the Riverview Highlands. Private parking for the classic cars will be provided. All makes and models are invited to take place in the car show itself. Food and drinks will also be
available. Awards will be presented at 3 p.m. The entry fee for the car show is only $10. A live DJ and a 50/50 drawing will also take place. The “Clubs” portion of the outing is a four-person scramble. Included are a golf cart, lunch at the turn, two beverage tickets and dinner. And here is the unique part: At least nine of the holes will have a classic vehicle parked near the tee. If you’re a classic car lover and a golfer, can you imagine a better scenario? “This is the perfect opportunity to see some beautiful cars on our newly updated and improved golf course,” said Swift. The cost of the golf outing is only $400.00 per foursome. For more information on the “Chrome” Car Show please call the Cruisin Classics Agency at 734-2310230. To reserve your foursome or questions on the golf outing please call the Riverview Highlands 15015 Sibley Road, at 734-284-4255.

Return to Turtle Island winner crowned A winner has been chosen for the Young Patriot’s Park “Return to Turtle Island” contest. For the third year in a row a contest sponsored by Riverview Mayor Andy Swift has produced a winner. That winner is CJ Hughes. Ms. Hughes was the recipient of a $50 gift card from The Parthenon on Fort Street in Riverview. “We had 10 people submit photos of the turtles basking in the sun,” said mayor Swift. This year there was an additional island added due to overcrowding on
the original island. The following residents all took the time to send in their unique pictures to the Mayor. A big thank you goes to Brenda Booker, Darlene Ledl, Diane Philpot, Pilar Salaz-Martin, Denise Bowman, Rose Piasecki, James Perry, Elena Tyler, CJ Hughes, and Geralyn Gorzynski. Swift added, “Turtle viewing is just one of the many activities to do at our premier park, so I encourage all our residents to visit the park this summer”.

In early May the residents of the Riverview Glens Subdivision held their Annual Glens Park Cleanup Day. Every spring since 2011 residents of the subdivision gather to tidy up the park by pulling weeds, planting flowers and trees and other special projects. In addition to the normal cleanup this year, the residents planted a River Birch tree and a Red Horse Chestnut tree. For the special project - headed by cleanup coordinator and master gardener Eve Howell - the residents build a rain garden. The purpose of this garden is to help eliminate the standing water that has been plaguing the path at the south end of the park. “This year’s Park Day was a huge success,” said Howell. “I think we had the most volunteers and donations were up also, to $1,500. “Thank you to all the kind residents that volunteered their time to make our park better, not just for us, but for future generations.”
Kiwanis seek help to purchase LifeVac devices Since 2015 over 5,000 people per year have choked to death in the United States. Choking is a leading cause of death in children and in those over 65 years of age. A majority of these deaths are caused by food. The Kiwanis of Riverview would like to prevent any of those statistics from coming from our city and our schools. There is a device available to help prevent these choking incidents from ending in tragedy. This device is called LifeVac. The LifeVac device is a nonpowered, non-invasive, singleuse only airway clearance device developed for resuscitating a victim with an airway obstruction when current choking protocols have been followed without success. LifeVac has a one-way valve that does not allow any air to enter a choking victim on the downward motion. Although the device is singleuse, if it is used to save a life, it is
replaced free of charge. There are a few different LifeVac kits available for use. The Kiwanis of Riverview have decided to provide the EMS Kit version to the City of Riverview for each of its two ambulances and three of its police patrol cars. Along with these two kits they’d
like to provide the five schools making up the Riverview Community School District with the LifeVac School Kit. The cost of these kits will run about $1,500. The Covid-19 Pandemic has severely impacted the Kiwanis’s ability to raise money. Normally the club would have had
its annual Spaghetti Dinner at the end of April to pay for something like this. Without that fundraiser they have committed $500 towards the purchase of these life-saving kits. This is where they are asking for your help. The Kiwanis are seeking donations to purchase seven LifeVac kits at a cost $1,500. If you would like to help finance this purchase please send your check to: Kiwanis of Riverview LifeVac Fundraiser P.O. Box 2057 Riverview, Mi. 48193 Any amount is truly appreciated, but for all those who donate $100 or more by July 15, 2021 will have their name put into a drawing for a two-hour tour of the Detroit River on a 70 foot yacht for two people later this summer. For more information please email Mayor Andrew Swift at aswift@ cityofriverview.com.

firefighters. One misstep can result in tragedy. The Stryker Power-PRO XT Cots are more than mere stretchers. The Power-PRO XT Cots are very powerful tools; they can lift up to 750 pounds with the push of a button. Additionally, these new cots add functions their predecessors did not have including the ability to telescope the frame allowing the cot to fit in tighter spots such as small elevators. The cot also allows for the firefighters to transport the patient in a more comfortable position. Stryker’s Stair-Pro stair chairs incorporate the addition of a tread system which increases the safety factor immensely. The treads have an inertia type mechanism that applies a “brake” that slows the chair as more force is applied. This action allows for a safe descent on any type of stairs. Also, the stair chair adds a more robust set of straps, as well as a more sturdy, extending handle/frame allowing a better hold and control of the patient

The Riverview Fire Department has taken yet another step towards providing its citizens with safe and efficient care. The fire department recently acquired two Stryker Power-PRO XT Cots with Power-LOAD Fastener System, as well as two Stryker StairPro stair chairs. These new tools will allow the fire department to move and transport their patients in a more safe and effective manner. Lifting, moving, and extracting patients is one of the most critical functions firefighters undertake, and they do so dozens of times per day. Previously, firefighters would have to manually lift and lower each patient, some of which weigh in excess of 600 pounds, oftentimes with only two personnel. Yet this only represents one facet of the challenge faced when transporting a patient safely. Many times, the patient needs to be moved up or down stairs; this is one of the most dangerous aspects of the process, not only for the patient, but also for the

A little history of the flags at Young Patriots Park About 10 years ago on Memorial day, I happened to be walking the path at Young Patriots Park when I happened upon a couple of men in American Legion hats carrying about three or four flags. I knew one of the men, his name was Elmer Trombley, who incidentally was instrumentally responsible for the GERALD beautiful Veterans Memorial Monument that PERRY Riverview is there today. Register I asked him what was going on. He told me they were holding a Memorial Day Ceremony to honor the veterans from all the world wars who were KIA in the World Wars. I asked if this ceremony was always so sparsely attended, to which he answered, “I guess not many people cared anymore.” Wow, this shocked me. No one cared anymore. I thought to myself, the fallen deserved so much more. So I attended the next City Council meeting and told them what I had observed and how shocked I was that so few people were there. The outcome was that the mayor and city council challenged me to do something about this. I told them that if I were to take on the challenge I would need help and asked if I could use the Recreation Department for help. And Todd Dickman the Recreation Director was appointed. The first people to volunteer were Elmer Trombley, James Trombley, Lynn and Chuck Blanchette, Bill Singer, and my good friend and neighbor, Captain
S
Craig Williamson of the Riverview Fire Department. As time went on several others joined in. People such as, John Lowler, Andy Swift, Mike Candella, Don Hatfield, Ron and Randy Miller, Dave Ryan and members of The Riverview American legion Post. I hope I haven’t missed anyone and if so, please forgive me. And the Riverview Memorial Day Ceremonial Day Committee was off and running. We enlisted the help from the Trenton City Memorial Day Committee, who graciously invited me to attend one of their meetings. People like Mayor Kyle Stack, Jeff Wegar and John Craven, who came up with a lot of suggestions and Ideas. One idea was a “Field of Flags.” Since the “Field of Flags” was a licensed name, we came up with the “Circle of Flags” placed around the reflection pond. The selling of flags to honor military service people who were now, or had served was really well supported. The weather for our first Memorial Day Ceremony the year 2012 was a beautiful sunshiny day, but at nightfall a wind driven rain came and blew a lot of the flags down and some went into the reflection pond. The Fire Department went out and rescued most of the flags that were down and the committee put them back together the next day. The Memorial Day Ceremony Committee has survived and although the faces have changed, the hope is that we will continue to have a “Circle of Flags” every year to come.

Ingredients to elevate your meals... and health! Looking for a way to spice up meals while also heightening your wellness? Consider these three delicious herbs and spices the next time you whip up a dish. Turmeric: One of today’s most popular spices (and rightfully so), Turmeric is a rich, golden color and high in anti-inflammatory properties. Try it to flavor vegan dishes, chicken or even in a golden latte. Ginger: Having stomach issues? Give ginger a go to support gut health. Add it to your morning tea or smoothie. Rosemary: Did you know that rosemary can help support healthy blood sugar levels? It makes the perfect garnish for dishes like grilled veggies, pan roasted chicken, or roast. Why rest days are important Can rest really help you meet your fitness goals? Absolutely!
It’s incredibly important to give your body the time it needs to rest and recover on your path to wellness. Here are a few reasons you shouldn’t skip out on rest days: 1. It gives you time to recharge your mind, which is important for your mental health. By taking a day off, you’re also giving your mind and body the chance to crave exercise again, improving motivation. 2. Taking the time to recover makes you stronger. How? After an intense workout, your body repairs the small tears in your muscles that happen naturally during exercise. After repair, they’re stronger. 3. You may sleep better. On a rest day, less cortisol is produced, which can result in better sleep. 4. It may prevent injuries. Too much strain on our muscles can result in overuse injuries. Taking one rest day each week is ideal. The best exercise plan for you While it’s important to make fitness a priority in
your life, you shouldn’t expect to do the same workout routine every time you step foot in a gym. Instead, make sure you listen to your body when crafting a physical regimen that works for how you’re feeling. Stress: If you’re experiencing high stress before a workout, relax your mind and body as cortisol levels are already high. Keep the intensity level of your workout at 70 percent or less with yoga or a light jog. For days you’re experiencing low stress, work on strength training. Sleep quality: On days you’ve slept poorly, aim for gentle movements like cycling or mobility exercises. When you’ve slept well, go all out with a high energy workout like boxing, weight lifting or a run. Injuries: If you’re injured, the best thing you can do is allow yourself the proper time to heal so the problem doesn’t become worse. Contact us for an appointment so we can help you get back to your activities ASAP. ~ Cousineau Chiropractic

Awarded attorney has your interests in mind When you walk through the door at Forrester Law Offices you will find several things: A cordial atmosphere in a clean and comfortable office environment and a no nonsense attorney ready to take your case and guide you through every step of the legal process. As a Ford Motor Company early retiree and an experienced 20-plus year attorney, Jeffrey Forrester brings practical, hands-on experience to his cases. Forrester has been a Grosse Ile resident for 30 years and was named Attorney of the Year by the Michigan Community Resources group in 2012. He received that honor after he negotiated - pro bono - a beneficial deal for SafeHouse Center, a nonprofit organization in Ann Arbor that shelters battered and abused women and children. He is a past Grosse Ile Township Trustee and a two-time commodore of Elba Mar Boat Club. Forrester has worked with attorneys from both Michigan and Florida as many of his clients have homes in both states, so he has a firm grasp on the working of regional legal machinery in both states. “I have had the opportunity to work with some of the best attorneys in southeastern Michigan,” said Forrester. “In Southfield, where I had my first office, I met and worked with the best in the business. I enjoy that network of fellow attorneys, and if I choose not to deal with your legal issue, I can hook you up with the absolute best. Either way – you win.” And hiring Forrester will not break the bank. His local knowledge, legal experience and his far-reaching network come with a reasonable price tag. “I can offer the best results for the best price - period,” said Forrester. “I can guide a client through an otherwise difficult experience and share with them openly and honestly what they are dealing with. “I develop cost options and offer overviews of rewards as well as potential risks. I do not want just one job from you – I want to become your family’s Legal Counsel. I know if I relentlessly take care of my client base, everything else will take care of itself.” When you hire Attorney Forrester, your legal emergency becomes his emergency. Forrester said getting the best results for a client’s legal matter and watching clients learn to trust and appreciate the work that I do for them is the most gratifying part of my job. Compassion, confidentiality, and great results are what makes Forrester Law Office stand out in an otherwise crowded field. Why leave home? We have you covered here on the island.

Riverview gets in full baseball schedule Given the slow start that the COVID-19 pandemic caused Michigan high school baseball teams, it is amazing the number of contests the Riverview Pirates have managed to squeeze into the condensed year. The Bucs managed a 32-game regular-season schedule, 31 of them which were complete by the time The Register went to press. And the Bucs divided those contests nearly down the middle, winning 15, losing 15 and tying one with just a game against non-league Roosevelt left in the regular season. It was that kind of season for the Pirates, who divided doubleheaders with Farmington, Lincoln Park, Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central, Monroe and Carlson and went 6-6-1 in Huron League games. Typical of the season was the May 29 doubleheader with Farmington. Riverview took the first game 6-4 in nine innings with a two-run outburst in the top of the ninth. Gavin Holmes and Nick Wetherell divided the pitching duties, striking our a combined 11 Farmington hitters. Wetherell, Austin Davis and Micheal Halasz each had two hits to key a nine-hit Riverview offensive. The second game of the twinbill was just as close, with Farmington pulling out a 3-2 come-from-behind win with a run in the fifth and two more in the bottom of the sixth. It was another solid pitching effort as Rhyse Miller and Shane McAlinden teammed up to fan another 11 Farmington batters. Kolby Dorn had two boots and knocked in both Riverview runs.
After concluding the season wi9th a non-league battle with Roosevelt, the Bucs played in a June 5 MHSAA Division 3 district at Trenton that featured the host team and three Huron League schools. Results were not available until after The Register’s deadline. The Bucs faced Monroe Jefferson in their district semifinal and host Trenton played Grosse Ile, which had to fight to get past lowly Flat Rock in a pre-district game on June 1. Grosse Ile beat the Rams 19-2 and 14-1 during the regular Huron League season, but Flat Rock proved to be tougher the third time around. Grosse Ile led the game 4-0 headed into the seventh inning, but Flat Rock scored three times to make the Devils sweat before they finally succumbed. The district winner moves on to regionals, also hosted by Trenton, to face the winner of the Dearborn Divine Child district. Teams are that district were Melvindale, Dearborn Henry Ford, Garden City, Dearborn Heights Annapolis and host Divine Child. Pioneers host district The Gabriel Richard baseball team hosted a MHSAA Division 3 district tournament on Saturday June 5. The Pioneers battled Ecorse in one semifinal game and Monroe St. Mary Cathoic Central played Eroie Mason in the other. The winners met in the championship game. Results were not available by The Register’s deadline. The district champ moves on to regionals, also hosted by Gabriel Richard Photo by Larry Caruso

Richard hurdler Cousino blazes way to finals You wouldn’t have made any money betting against Gabriel Richard’s Asher Cousino in the hurdle races over the past few weeks. The Richard senior won the 300 hurdles at the Metro Classic hosted by Wyandotte Roosevelt on May 15. He then won both the 110 and 300 hurdles at the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 3 regional at Sand Creek on May 22. He followed that up by winning both events at the Cardinal Catholic League meet on May 26 at Macomb Lutheran North High School. And he then doubled up at the Wayne County Championships hosted by Dearborn Divine Child on May 28. He headed into Saturday’s Division 3 state meet at Jenison with the No. 1 seed time in the high hurdles and a top-10 seed time in the 300s. Cousino’s efforts helped carry the
Pioneers to fourth place as a team at the CHSL Cardinal meet, sixth at the Metro Classic and seventh at the regional. At the Cardinal meet, he had some help from teammates Parker Heggie, who was third and John Borowicz, who was fourth, in the two-mile, Jolo Abordo, who was fourth in the 300 hurdles, Alex Meszaros, who was fifth in the half-mile and Johnny Benko, who was fifth in the mile. Richard also ran second in the 4x400 relay with Andrew Cabalang, Meszaros, Peter Laskaris and Cousino and third in the 4x800 with Heggie, Steve Bagozzi, Benko and Meszaros. At regionals, Borowicz was third in the two-mile, Cabalang nabbed fifth in the 200, Meszaros was fifth in the mile and Richard was third in both distance relays.

The Riverview track team was forth at the Metro Classic
The Riverview track teams did not make much of an impact on the team scoring at the May 21 MHSAA regionals hosted by Milan High School. The boys finished 11th with 15 points and the girls were 14th with only six points. But individually, the boys did find some success as Jacob Puma ran 50.71 in the 400 meters, tied for second place and qualified for the Division 2 state finals. Puma went into the finals, which were held Saturday, with the fifth best seed time. Despite not qualifying for the state finals, Riverview’s 4x800 relay team ran well and finished fourth behind Adrian, Monroe Jefferson and Chelsea. The fou on that squad were Gavin Shelton, Sam Polgar, Ethan Rucarean and Puma. At the Huron League meet on May 25, also at Milan, Riverview’s boys were sixth. Riverview’s effort there was keyed by the second-place finish of
the 4x800 relay and the three-four finish of Justin Shupe and Blake Robinson in the two-mile. Finally, at the Metro Classic, hosted by Wyandotte on May 15, the Pirates, running in the afternoon with the area’s larger schools, finished fourth with 80 points. Woodhaven won with 172, Wyandotte was second with 101, and Carlson third with 100. Puma was the champ in the 400 meters with a time of 51.42. It was the fastest time in that event in either the morning or afternoon session of the meet. The Bucs ran second in the 4x800 relay with Shelton, Polgar, Logan Ruffner and Rucarean and third in the 4x400 with Cody Reimer, Ruffner, Rucarean and Puma. Shupe claimed second and Eric Pickell fourth in the two-mile, Polgar was fourth in the mile and Shelton and Rucarean ran fourth and fifth respectively in the half mile.
