Southgate hands out its annual business awards dave gorgon Southgate Star

The year 2020 will be remembered as the months everyone’s lives were affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. But that didn’t stop the City of Southgate, the Downtown Development Authority (DDA) and the Rotary Club of Southgate from honoring local businesses with annual awards. Seven businesses were honored during the ceremony, which was held both live and virtually for the first

time. City representatives visited the winners ahead of time and recorded individual presentations, which were spliced into the festivities. Mayor Joseph Kuspa announced the winners and thanked the Southgate business community for its “continued commitment to the city, especially during the last year.” “The challenges that they faced were real and unbearable at times,” Mayor Kuspa said, “but these entrepreneurs and management teams survived and, in many cases, flourished amid these challenges.” DDA Director Cassidy Tear said nominations for most of the awards SEE AWARDS, Page 3

CULINARY CAPERS Not that I need an excuse to bake one, but because April 20 is National Pineapple EVELYN Upside-Down Cake CAIRNES Day, I have decided to Southgate Star celebrate the holiday with one of my favorite cakes. Thank you, Dole, for your part in making pineapple upside-down cake one of the easiest and most delicious desserts of all to bake with little more than a can of sliced pineapple, a jar of maraschino cherries and a box of cake mix. It was pineapple-plantation-owner James Dole who developed a method of canning the fruit in the early1900s that eventually led to Pineapple Upside-Down Cake and other pineapple delectables. While browsing the internet recently, I stumbled on a spicy variation of the cake that was declared Indiana’s Number One on Taste of Home magazine’s 2018 list of the Best Cakes in every state. I could hardly wait to try it, and I was not disappointed. Also on the Best Cakes list was a recipe from former Allen Park resident Patty LaNoue Stearns of Traverse City, whose Pistachio Cake with Walnuts, was named Michigan’s Best. I remember baking Pistachio Cake, also called Watergate Cake, in the 1970s, and it’s as awesome today as it was then. The latter was said to have been inspired by the Nixon Watergate scandal. Make it today, for old-time’s sake, if you’re not too young to remember it! All of the Best Cakes on the list are in color and include recipes. SPICED PINEAPPLE- UPSIDEDOWN CAKE (Indiana’s Best) 1-1/3 cups butter, softened, divided 1 cup packed brown sugar 20-ounce can pineapple slices, drained 10 to 12 maraschino cherries ½ cup chopped pecans 1½ cups granulated sugar 2 large eggs, at room temperature 1 teaspoon vanilla 2 cups all-purpose flour 2 teaspoons baking powder ½ teaspoon baking soda ½ teaspoon salt ½ teaspoon cinnamon ½ teaspoon nutmeg 1 cup buttermilk (Note: I recommend using a skillet because it’s hard to flip the baking pan

without leaving some pineapple slices behind. They can be replaced with a spatula.) Set oven at 350 degrees. In a saucepan, melt 2/3 cup of the butter; stir in brown sugar. Spread in ungreased heavy 12-inch oven-proof skillet or 13x9-inch baking pan. Arrange pineapple in single layer over sugar mixture and place a cherry in the center. Sprinkle with pecans and set aside. In a large bowl, cream sugar and remaining butter until light and fluffy, 5 to 7 minutes. Add eggs, 1 at a time, beating well after each addition. Beat in vanilla. Combine flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon and nutmeg; add alternately to batter with buttermilk, beating well after each addition. Carefully pour over pineapple and bake until a toothpick inserted in center comes out clean, about 40 minutes for skillet, or 50 to 60 for baking pan. Immediately invert on a serving platter. PISTACHIO CAKE WITH WALNUTS (Michigan’s Best) For Cake: 15.25-ounce box white cake mix 3.4-ounce package instant pistachio pudding mix 3 large eggs 1 cup club soda ¾ cup canola oil 1 cup chopped walnuts For Frosting: 3.4-ounce package instant pistachio pudding mix 1 cup 2% percent milk 8-ounce carton frozen whipped topping, thawed Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour, or spray, a 10-inch fluted tube pan. In a large bowl, combine first 5 ingredients; beat on low speed 30 seconds. Beat on medium 2 minutes. Fold in walnuts. Transfer to prepared pan. Bake 40-45 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool 20 minutes before removing to wire rack to cool completely. For frosting, in large bowl, combine, pudding mix and milk; beat on low speed 1 minute. Fold in whipped topping. Spread over cake and enjoy. HAPPY BAKING! (Contact me at Evycairns@aol.com)

Restaurant entrepreneur says employees are heart of the businesses Jeremy Syrocki, who is involved in ownership of Truago restaurant in Trenton, Major Biddle in Wyandotte and Lloyd’s on Grosse Ile, has been in the restaurant business virtually his entire life. Syrocki opened Truago about five years ago, he helped open Major Biddle about two years ago, along with his brother Jeff and sister-in-law Christine. And two months ago, he reopened Lloyd’s with Grosse Ile friends Chris Laura and Francis Brooks. From his vast experience, Syricki knows that one of the key things that make a prosperous business is the quality of the employees. And at his three establishments Syrocki has been blessed with great employees, some who have been with him for years. For example, Truagio head prep chef Veronica Manzano predates even Truago and has worked for Syrocki for 10 years. “Our team of employees is what makes our restaurants succeed and a majority of them have been with the company since day one,” Syrocki said. “Our No. 1 goal in the kitchen has and always will be the quality and consistency of our food. The No. 1 goal for the service staff is to make sure every guest that walks through our door has an outstanding experience with us.” Truago general manager Carrie Hancock has been with the Trenton restaurant since 2016. Others that have been there from the start or near the start are, office manager Theresa Crispell, server/bartender Stacie Catka, server Holly Bogard, server Sarah Kowalski, server John Bujdoso, bartender Dawn Bomay and bartender Kristen Johnson. But the loyal staff at Lloyd’s really takes the cake. When the new owners reopened the bar, they brought back all the former employees who wanted to return. The longevity champ is sever Mary Kay Marx, who has worked at Lloyd’s for 31 years. And she is not the only one with a long record at the Grosse Ile tavern. Server Emily Lehman has been there 15 years, server Courtney Lehman has been there for 14 years, Cook Matt Robertson has been there eight years and server Robin Hensley has been there six years. It’s an impressive list of loyalty. Each of the three restaurants is different and offers a unique menu and atmosphere. Truago is an upscale steak and seafood restaurant in Downtown Trenton. Major Biddle, on the north end of Biddle in Wyandotte, specializes in ribs, barbecue and comfort food such as meatloaf and lasagna and also offers sandwiches, steaks and seafood.

The new owners redid the interior, but Lloyd’s remains a comfortable neighborhood bar where you can get house-made pizza, burgers, hoagies and a wide assortment of appetizers, entrees, soups and salads. Already, the bar is selling 50-100 pizzas a day, counting carry-out and dine-in sales, Syrocki said. Combined the three establishments employ around 100 people. Here is each establishment’s leadership team: Truago - Carrie Hancock, general manager and Mario Robertson, executive chef. Major Biddle - Christine Syrocki, general manager and Samantha Esparza, executive chef. Lloyd’s - Johnny Zukowski, executive chef. “The secret to retaining a great staff is hiring great leaders who will jump in and do whatever it takes to keep anyone from failing,” said Jeremy Syrocki. “You build mutual respect as a leader when you work alongside your team. Covid had a way of showing us who was loyal to the company and wanted to remain a part of our restaurant family. “The most important quality that a member of our team must possess is accountability and integrity.” The staff at Truago, Major Biddle and Lloyd’s are experienced, talented and ready to make your return to dining out a pleasant, enjoyable and delicious one. They’d like to invite you to come out and give them a try. Try these simple stretches for stress relief you’re carrying your weight. Is it in the front or back of your feet? Shift your weight so that the majority is held on the ball of the foot. 3. Visit us. As spinal experts, we can help you strengthen weak muscles that may be to blame for bad posture and keep you properly aligned—all without the need for drugs or surgery.

Sometimes, the best thing to do when we’re feeling stressed is to stop and take a breather as we give our body time to relax. Stretching is a known stress-reliever that can also calm your headspace. The next time you’re feeling stressed, give these stretches a try: Child’s pose: Release tension in your lower back by kneeling on the floor and bringing your feet together. Open your legs at the knees. Sit back and walk your arms forward on the floor as your chest lowers to the ground. Take a few deep breaths as needed. Forward fold: Stretch your upper and lower body by standing with your feet a few feet apart. Slightly bend your knees. Bend forward at the hips with your arms stretched toward the ground. Chest opener: Standing straight, hold your hands together behind your back and squeeze your upper shoulder blades toward one another. Three ways to improve your posture Having good posture isn’t just important for feeling confident, it’s actually a necessity for good health. If you find yourself slouching too much, here are a few ways you can improve your posture naturally. 1. Did you know our abdominal muscles play

an important role in posture? When you stand, be conscious of pulling your stomach in—this will help you “straighten up.” 2. When you’re standing, stop and notice where

What’s that pain in my leg? Do you ever find yourself dealing with lower back or leg pain that tingles, goes numb and is just outright annoying? You might be dealing with sciatica. Sciatic pain happens when our sciatic nerve becomes pinched, irritated or inflamed. Sometimes a slipped or herniated disc can be the culprit. Located in the lower back, the sciatic nerve runs down the leg, which can make the entire area painful during a flare up. You might find relief with over the counter pain relievers or alternating hot and cold therapy, but that won’t correct the issue at its source. If sciatic pain is a problem in your life, we’re here for you. Contact our practice today to restore balance to your nervous system and remove pressure from compressed nerves. The drumbeat gets louder, antitrust sentiment is growing Small Business Rising - That’s the name of the new initiative begun by The Institute for Local Self Reliance (ILSR). The initiative is designed to allow the group to apply its formidable investigative skills to keep Congress aware of injustice and to bring an end to the thinking that has led us to the here and now. Small business owners like me PETER are being asked to ROSE Southgate Star contribute time, energy and the power of our passion to protect and advocate for small and locally-owned. Whatever they need from me, I am in and eager to help them make changes that will set the USA back on a course of broader-based winning. ILSR is tackling the topic of Antitrust law in the United States. Focusing also on the abdication of responsibility and collusion with those that do their best to get what they want through campaign contributions, donations to both parties, and promises of highly lucrative job offers after our government leaders leave office. Since the early 1980s, both parties have stupidly tilted the playing field away from small businesses, directing the transfer of wealth and market share to big business. This propensity to enable and enrich Big in the world of retail of all sorts is precisely the problem that needs to be addressed and fixed - permanently. One of the ways to make these course corrections is putting teeth

back into the enforcement of laws pertaining to the control of monopolies and price fixing between such entities. One good example of price fixing is the pact between FedEx and UPS to make sure that their shipping rates are identical to the penny for every weight and size box that they ship. It’s not coincidence; it’s carefully planned and executed with zero fear of being fined and sanctioned for such a modus operandi. It’s illegal, and nobody cares. Why is that? Government enacts laws that are designed to keep Big growing at the expense of Small, and has ignored the very thing they are supposedly regulating. Small is damaged, often to the point of failure. I sound so paranoid, I know. But backing away from being so pointed and direct is exactly the wrong thing to do. I have to get louder, not come to terms with things just being the way they are. After writing for this many years - and advocating so much before that - I am feeling relief and warmth that people are telling me what I keep talking about. The concept of localism is being touted by dozens of marketers and businesses, working independently to regain the connectivity of community. The topic of retail is my only real realm of authority. Nearly 50 years in the game and I’ve experienced the vastly different world of multiple stores (23 at our peak between Willow Tree and Chelsea) and single locations.

The world of farming has changed due to big agra. Indie farmers are still making a living, but there are far fewer. Fishing is different, same thing. Independent bankers are so far fewer it’s astounding. There once were three in Wyandotte alone, now none. Capitalism has a natural path toward big, and then far bigger. Doesn’t matter what field, it simply

has to grow. Government has to understand that, and control it all. But it doesn’t. So while I am immensely encouraged that there is real action towards reigning it all in a bit (if not a lot), habits of a nation are not easy to change. Still, it has to start somewhere, and it has begun. Finally.

Estate Planning 101 Which plan do you need? Time to clear up the confusion about Estate Planning ... The following definitions lack legal precision, but makes it easier to get a clear picture of what may be needed in your case. ■ Will – letter of intent of where you want your personal property to go – or not go. ■ living Will – Documents your wishes during your final days including final healthcare choices and possibly your burial wishes. ■ trust – This is a “company” that you start, and you become the CEO, “Trustee” and “Settlor.” The company outlives you, but continues to manage your assets as if you were alive by the successor CEO – whom you designate. ■ Power of attorney – Financial and Healthcare – you need both – the first so someone can pay your bills, the second, sometimes called a Patient Advocate, designates someone to make “hallway at the hospital” decisions to take the stress off the family. ■ ladybird Deed – probably the best thing that has happened to owning a home. I love these deeds – you grant yourself a life estate – in your own property - but retain the power to sell or borrow against the property. If you do not sell before you pass, this “springs” the house out of your estate, and your heirs have instant ownership, subject to any mortgage or taxes owed or similar. Again, this is just a general description of the more popular terms – no one choice is a “silver bullet” but depending on how your estate gets planned out you can expedite a clean and clear process for the assets you worked a lifetime to save. Why wouldn’t you want to do that? Stop by or call and make an appointment and I’ll tell you what your going to need to do this right. To my numerous former clients – thank you for allowing me to draft your estate plan!

Student and staff at Davidson Middle School show their support for Reese Frazier, who is battling Ewing Sarcoma

Davidson students are ‘Fighting for Reese’ By Elizabeth Sisler and Ejona Dano

A fellow student here at Davidson Middle School - 8th-grader Reese Frazier - was diagnosed last fall with a rare form of childhood cancer, Ewing Sarcoma. Since then, Reese has had to go through chemotherapy, many surgeries, radiation treatment, rib replacements and getting her Pneumothorax removed. Throughout all of this Reese has continued to look forward to the small things in life, like simple movie nights or running normally again. Reese enjoys watching movies and going to the beach. She also likes popcorn and blankets. Despite everything, she still has a smile on her face and a positive attitude. Here at Davidson, we are trying to support her as much as we can with our love. Davidson Student Council, led by Kristy Vilardi and Barbara Engstrom-

McGraw, held a Ribbons for Reese fundraiser. Yellow ribbons were sold by students at lunch and we hung them in the trees in front of our school to show our support for her. On Friday, April 9, the whole school, in-person and remote learners alike, wore yellow to show that we are all Titan Strong for her. Reese is an amazing person, a great friend, a wonderful student and a fighter. We know that Reese is going through a very challenging time right now and we want to help her as much as we can. We have tried to support her and her mom by hosting this fundraiser here at Davidson. The wonderful staff here has been keeping in touch with her everyday; they have made it easier for Reese to still learn when she can. She still has a long road to go but we will all be here to support her however we can.

Stay at Home Care LLC has been helping the elderly and disabled in the privacy of their own homes for 7 years. The business started as a result of both co-owners Brenda Rademan and Diana Cain having Diana Cain & Brenda Rademan difficulty finding the means to care for their own parents at home. “You speak with the owners; we aren’t a franchise like the rest of them.” said co-owners Brenda and Diana. When talking about your loved ones, there is nothing worse than dealing with impersonal care. At Stay at Home Care you can expect the friendly service of hand picked employees, and a care plan that revolves around your needs. In fact they are known for their 2 hour minimum for services. This minimum insures that they can provide you with care that works for your schedule. Stay at Home Care is proud to keep people in the homes they love, as long as possible. Titans scrambling just to get key players on the field HANK MINCKIEWICZ Southgate Star

The 2021 baseball season has started, but the Southgate Anderson Titans are nowhere near ready to even guess how things will turnout this season. Yes, the team lost it’s first three games, but in the opener, not a single player on the field had even played an inning of varsity baseball. In the next game, neither the shortstop nor the third baseman had played those positions at any level. “I am still optimistic about our team,” said coach Mark Davis, “But so far, it has been one thing after the other. We had 4-5 guys miss tryouts because they were playing other sports, then came spring break, then we had COVID quarantine, then some kids got COVID, not we’ve got some guys injured and sick.” In the opener, Anderson had six starters out of the lineup and played four freshmen or sophomores, then the Titans lost their starting centerfielder for an unknown amount of time with a sprained ankle and finally they lost a starting pitcher on game day when he got sick, spent the morning throwing up and was not better by game time. To quote the coach: One thing after the other. The Titans opened the season with losses to Downriver League rivals Trenton, Carlson and Lincoln Park and while the losses were disappointing, Davis saids he is looking at more than wins and losses in the early going. He is looking to get his everyday players in their proper positions and get the team ready for the state playoffs. “We’re still optimistic that we can make a run in the state tournament,”

2021 Anderson baseball team Dylan Berrios, freshman Brennan Emans, junior Ethan Gringras, junior Bradley Grahl, senior Nathan Jones, sophomore Daveon Jones, senior Jacob Kimes, senior Ryan Kruzak, junior Ryan MacDonnell, sophomore Spencer McMahon, senior Zachary Meekins, junior Charles Mickel, junior Andrew Parkham, junior Jake Peer, junior Antonio Ruiz, sophomore Seth Thompson, senior Jeremiah Valdez, junior Gavin White, junior

Davis said. The Titans will play in a five-team Division 1 district hosted by Lincoln Park to start the state tourney. The other teams are the host Railsplitters, Allen Park, River Rouge and Wyandotte Roosevelt. The district tournament starts June 1, so there is not a great deal of time for teams to get their houses in order. “We have a lot of guys stepping up and doing what we’ve asked them to do,” said Davis. “When we are all together and all healthy, I think we will be pretty good. I know we’ll have some really good pitching.” At the top of the pitching list is one of two senior starters on the club, Spencer McMahan. McMahan, who had a fine winter season on a good Titan basketball team, is the team’s ace and likely the starting third baseman when he is not on the bump. “Spencer has really looked good throwing the ball,” said Davis. “He’s a

With a makeshift lineup on the field, Anderson opened the season with a 7-1 loss to Trenton and it’s ace pitcher Matt Ottenbreit.

really good infielder, too.” But he has not yet played. “Our best pitcher has not yet set foot on the field for a game this year,” admitted Davis. The other senior, Jacob Kimes, is an outfielder and a pitcher. Davis called him a lockdown player in the first and a middle-of-the-order hitter. Junior centerfielder Gavin White was off to a hot start at the plate this year before he sprained his ankle. Davis said he is unsure how bad the sprain is, but hopes to have White back soon

Another key player for the Titans is junior shortstop Ryan Kuzak. “He’s looked really good,” said Davis. “It’s hard to get anything past him at short. He’s super fast and has a good arm.” Since playing Trenton, Carlson and Lincoln Park to start the season, Anderson has faced Tayor and Wyandotte. There upcoming game include home games against Allen Park (April 26) and Woodhaven (April 29) and a road game against Dearborn Edsel Ford (April 28).

Senior goalkeeper Natalie Beltran is the backbone of the Southgate Anderson team.

HANK MINCKIEWICZ Southgate Star

The numbers are not great. The Anderson girls soccer team has just 17 players this year. Eleven of them have never played higher than recreation soccer and there is no junior varsity team. But veteran coach Larry Lankford is not complaining. He has a small core of solid veteran players and the newcomers - with very limited practice time - are coming together more quickly than he had even

dared to hope. “We have been better than I expected. I have been impressed,” Lankford said. “We have a lot of beginners, but the girls have learned quickly and they played above themselves.” The Titans opened the season with a 2-0 victory over Taylor and followed it up with a 5-2 loss to a strong Carlson team. Lankford was disappointed with the loss, but pleased with his team’s performance. “It was 2-2 at halftime and, if we hadn’t made a mistake late in the first half, we would have been leading 2-1,” he said. “It was a strong first half by us. We were really excited with the effort.”

The Titans played well in the second half, too, but Carlson took advantage of a couple breakdowns and scored three times. Southgate was not without its scoring chances, with one shot ringing off the goal post.” As they expected, the Titans have gotten great play from senior goalkeeper Natalie Beltran. “Natalie has been fantastic,” said Lankford. “She’s a great keeper. She’s great out of the net, too, but we can’t afford to have her play out. “A great keeper can keep a team like ours in the game and it gives us a lot of confidence and she has already made some amazing saves this season.”

Fellow senior Brooke McClure, who scored 22 goals the last time she played for the Titans, which was in 2018, is back and doing her thing. She had two goals and three points in the team’s first two games. Morgan Faryniarz, another senior, keys the defense and junior Miranda Graham is another offensive threat. She had 10 goals as a freshman on the varsity in 2019. “We have some solid players with a lot of talent,” said Lankford. With so many newcomers and inexperienced players, Lankford said it’s hard to judge just what kind of season the Titans will have, but after seeing his team on the pitch, he said he is excited about the Titans’ upside. “We’re not really about setting goals this year,” he said. “We plan to teach’em, let’em learn and see how we progress.” The Titans have 11 games scheduled this year, plus three Downriver League position games. In addition to games with its league opponents, Anderson will play Redford Thurston, Melvindale and Garden City. The Michigan High School Athletic Association district tournament begins May 26 and Southgate will be at Trenton along with the host Trojans, Allen Park, Carleton Airport, Carlson, News Boston Huron and Riverview.

Titan track teams hope to grow and improve The Southgate Anderson track teams - both boys and girls - are a little down in numbers this year. Heading into opening weekend, coach Sam Childs handed out uniforms to 28 boys and 16 girls. It’s not an ideal situation, but Childs hope his athletes make the best of it. “We have some juniors and seniors that have some real ability and hopefully the young kids will grow up fast and fill in nicely,” he said. Some of those “with ability” are seniors Connor Augenstein, Noah Packwood, Torian Clemons, Steven Porter and Connor Eccleton. Auguenstein, Packwood, Porter and Eccleton were all part of a solid cross country squad last fall. Strangely, they are not all distance runners in track, Augenstein will pole vault and hurdle, while Packwood will run sprint relays and the quarter mile. Childs said Packwood is fast he expects him to perhaps be among the top quarter-milers in the area by season’s end. Porter and Eccleton will run the distance races and Clemons will sprint, long jump and high jump.

On the girls side of things senior Joselyn Raths and junior Alivia Ensign will sprint and handle the jumping events, senor Faith Plummer is a distance runner, freshman Grace Buckner is a promising middle distance runner and pole vaulter and senior Jordan Hunt is the lone experienced thrower on the squad male or female. Hunt is an accomplished athlete, who is a hockey goalie and will play at Adrian College next season. The Titans opened the season April 17 in Ypsilanti at the Splitter Relays but had a Downriver League tri-meet with Carlson and Wyandotte cancelled on April 20. The Downriver League is running its entire season as Tri-meets and Anderson will run April 27 at Trenton, May 4 at Dearborn Edsel Ford and May 11 at Woodhaven. The Metro Classic, run in two divisions this year to help teams keep their distance, will be May 15 at Wyandotte Roosevelt. Regionals will be May 20 at Saline and the Downriver League meet will be May 25 at Trenton.

Titan softballers suddenly get hot After losing their first three games of the season, the Anderson softball team bounced back with a vengeance, winning its next four contests. The Titans opened with losses to Ann Arbor Pioneer, Trenton and Carlson. But then a 10-0 domination of Lincoln Park ignited the winning streak. Then came a doubleheader sweep of Detroit Western International and then a 9-6 decision over Taylor. The Taylor win on April 19 evened Anderson’s Downriver League record at 2-2. In the game against the Griffins, both teams scored three runs in the first inning and there was scoring throughout, but a four-run fourth inning by Anderson proved to be the difference. The Titans clubbed 19 hits in the game, led by Erica Pagac with five and Grace Piesz and Sierra Solo with four each. Taylor Cook was the winning pitcher. In the rout of Lincoln Park, Anderson bashed 10 more hits, scored seven runs the in first two innings and ended the game after five innings because of the mercy rule. Pagac and madison O’Herir-Knapp each had two hits.

Two Titan wrestlers are state runners-up Two Anderson wrestlers came close to winning individual state championships last month, but each came up one match short. Senior Ian Norscia reached the Division 2 state final at 215 pounds, but lost a tough 4-2 decision to CJ Krum of St. Johns. Both wrestlers came into the match unbeaten and Norscia finished the year with a record of 18-1 and closed out his career at 144-29. To reach the finals, Norscia beat Lowell’s Carter Blough 3-2 in the semifinals. He pinned Allegan’s Zachary Foster to start the tournament and scored a 14-1 majority decision over Tanner Hursh of Edweardsbery in the quarterfinal round. Anderson senior Adrian Rosas squared off with reigning state champ Nolan Wertanen of St. Joseph for the 112-pound state title in a match that also featured two wrestlers who hadn’t lost all season. Rosas fell 9-4 and he finished second in the state at 112 pounds. Earlier in the day, Rosas pinned his first two opponents - Ethan Goodwin of Hamilton and Logan Pike

of Coldwater - then edged Jackson Northwest’s Bryce Graham 4-2 in the semifinals to advance to the championship match. He closed out the year with a record of 21-1 and wrapped up with a career record of 136-33. Henry Feller (171) and Ryan Leonard (130) also competed at the state finals for the Titans, each going 0-2. Feller was pinned by Jacob Lee of Lowell and by Jaiden Tatum of Grand Rapids Northview. Leonard was beaten by Zack Hall of Lake Fenton won by pin in his second match and was eliminated by Trey Meyers of Fremont. At regionals Rosas and Norscia each won a championship, while Feller took third and Leonard placed fourth. To win the regional crown, Norscia beat Greg Peck of St. Clair Shores Lakeview, Lucas Dyer of Tecumseh and Kameron Beuttner of Huron 3-2 in the championship match. Rosas’s path to the title included wins over Ryatt Radomski of St. Clair Shores Lakeview, Sheldon Valade of Carlson and Jamarcus Smith in the finals

The top of Anderson tennis coach Ryan Furkas’s lineup is strong. The bottom? Full of question marks. The Titans, who were so looking forward to the 2020 season, were bitterly disappointed when the campaign was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Some of the potential leaders from that team are gone now, but several remain and the Southgate squad hopes to build a successful season around them. “Our top six is really strong,” admitted Furkas. The Titans four singles players three seniors and a junior - have a combined 13 varsity season under their belts and are more than ready to do battle against the best the Downriver League has to offer. It starts at the top with No. 1 player Ava Peryam, a four-year player. “Ava has been groomed for this,” said Furkas. “She would have been our

No. 2 last year and now she’s here as our No, 1. “I can’t say enough about her. She has worked hard to take her strong game and make it even better. She’s also really stepped up and taken a real leadership role on the team.” In fact, all the top Titan players have done that, according to Furkas. “They have been unbelievable,” he said. “They are serious about the game and they show it to the rest of the girls. We have two coaches, but it’s like having six more assistant coaches on the courts.” Joining Peryam in singles are threeyear senior Abbey Nea at No. 2, threeyear junior Jessica Edwards at No. 3 and three-year senior Leslie Maloney at No. 4. Anderson’s No. 1 doubles team is strong, too, with fellow three-year seniors Brianna Bumgardner and Audrey Edwards teaming up at that spot. Junior Danica McCoy will play No. 2 doubles, likely with sophomore Kejsy Sulaj as a partner, but the situation

is fluid. Juniors McKenna Freitas and Alexis Pomponio, sophomore Myrisa Thacker and freshmen Maya Freitas and Emily Parkham all are looking to secure time as varsity doubles players. The Titan opened the 2021 campaign in style, whipping Riverview 6-2 and beating Taylor 7-1 in the Downriver League opener. In the season-opener against Riverview, Peryan won a three-set battle, while Neal, Jessica Edwards and Maloney cruised in straight sets, losing just two games between them. In doubles, Bumgardner and Audrey Edwards won as did McCoy and Sulaj. Against Taylor, the Titans cruised, losing only at No. 3 doubles.
