Do you care about the future of the brownfields along the waterfront in Trenton?

Per the web site, your input will help them analyze “the accessibility, frequency of use, physical condition, perceptions, and future expectations for the future usage of the waterfront properties and the system of trails.”

Do you want to see more industrial sites, commercial sites or railroad cars? How about mixed use, retail/ residential with apartments, condos andMayberestaurants?morenature, trails, and parks would be your cup of tea, or a little bit of all these ideas?

The eyesore that was the closed down McLouth Steel site is now being considered for redevelopment. input from Downriver residents is being sought.

SOUTHGATE STAR • September 13 — October 13, 2022 • Page 3

The costs and time involved for remediating the properties for new industries and businesses is much less than it is for making the area suitable for residential/retail use and parklands. Possible industries and businesses that could be helping recoup that municipal tax loss could be “intermodal shipping, solar and nuclear energy research and production, warehouse storage and a ferryHowever, terminal.”this direction comes with potential environmental impacts, and will limit public access to the waterfront. Scenario 2 is the Trenton Great Lakes Way Biennial The goal of this proposal is to “improve the existing physical infrastructure supporting the Great Lakes Blue and Green Ways at Trenton, and to activate the trail system through cultural programming and small nodes of access to the Detroit River.” This is a great result for the people and nature, but not so much the bottom line.

This might be the sweet spot that makes everyone – and the city’s coffers – happy. According to the website above: “An influx of local and state funding streams targets the project sites as critical assets to advance urban resilience, climate adaptation, and regional competitiveness in the Great Lakes Basin. This renewed commitment to public spending animates private investors to enter into ambitious partnerships in Trenton.Asaresponse, this scenario offers a glimpse of how commercial, research and development could transform the waterfront revitalization district into a prosperous urban place. The transformation will anchor new local and regional uses and open up the waterfront to the public, further activating access and enjoyment of the Trenton Chanel and the Detroit River. This scenario means increased governance complexity, larger economic investment, more stringent environmental clean-ups, and necessary controls to ensure new developments are not negatively impacting Trenton’s current social fabric.Managing this ambitious urban transformation over time will also require the formation of waterfront authorities participated by public officials, land-owners, and private entities, foundations, and citizen advisory groups.

Currently, there is a web site created by a group of graduate students at University of Michigan Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning’s Public Design Corps led by Professor Maria Arquero de Alarcon, who are working with Trenton Councilwoman Wendy Pate, former Trenton Mayor Pat Hartig and environmental scholar John Hartig, who is the chair of the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan’s Great Lakes Way Advisory Committee, the impetus for this effort.

The scenario’s new programmatic offerings are supported by ample access to the waterfront and related amenities, and the integration with the existing green and blue trails.” What scenario do you want? What ideas do you have for the future of Trenton’s waterfront?

Also, feel free to attend the Downtown Development Authority meetings on the third Thursday of each month from now until December. They start at 6 p.m. in the second-floor caucus room of Trenton City Hall. The next meeting is Sept. 15. Let them know which scenario you would like to see in the future.

This web site spotlights the Great Lakes Way, a 156-mile network of trails and blueways that extend from Lake Huron to Lake Erie. With the three large brownfield areas ripe for transition, the Taubman College Public Design Corps would like to get your insight and past experiences with the outdoor recreational offerings that are in the Trenton area. You do not need to be a resident of Trenton to take this survey; you just need to have experienced the waterfront, parks and/or trails in order to offer feedback.

If you have thoughts on what the future of Trenton’s waterfront should look like, now is the perfect time to share your input with the folks who are working at moving Trenton forward in a positive way.

Scan the QR code or go to the web site and take the survey. Every voice matters. storymaps.arcgis.com/stories/

The Public Design Corps calls this a Story Map because it traces the history of Trenton’s waterfront, identifies current challenges, offers three possible waterfront futures or scenarios, and invites community stakeholder input. The goal is to get as many people as possible involved in re-envisioning the waterfront.

The third scenario is Commercial and R&D Redevelopment.Waterfront

The result is the attraction of new blue and green economies and the decisive commitment to environmental stewardship that will situate Trenton as a blueprint for sustainable urban transformation and a regional destination.

Downriver waterfront: Your opinion is wanted

Scenario 1 is entitled Quick Revenue. The closing of those industrial sites came with a loss of revenue for the city. That needs to be recouped in some way and attracting more business and industry is a way to accomplish that.

■ Trust – This is a “company” that you start, and you become the CEO, “Trustee” and “Settlor.” The company outlives you, but continues to manage your assets as if you were alive by the successor CEO – whom you designate.

■ Living Will – Documents your wishes during your final days including final healthcare choices and possibly your burial wishes.

■ Power of Attorney – Financial and Healthcare – you need both – the first so someone can pay your bills, the second, sometimes called a Patient Advocate, designates someone to make “hallway at the hospital” decisions to take the stress off the family. ■ Ladybird Deed – probably the best thing that has happened to owning a home. I love these deeds – you grant yourself a life estate – in your own property - but retain the power to sell or borrow against the property. If you do not sell before you pass, this “springs” the house out of your estate, and your heirs have instant ownership, subject to any mortgage or taxes owed or similar.Again, this is just a general description of the more popular terms – no one choice is a “silver bullet” but depending on how your estate gets planned out you can expedite a clean and clear process for the assets you worked a lifetime to save. Why wouldn’t you want to do that? Stop by or call and make an appointment and I’ll tell you what you’re going to need to do this right. Long time aD, assistant principal David Pinkowski retires from anderson

After 31 years as an employee of the Southgate Community Schools, David Pinkowski finds himself in an odd position: he’s retired and unemployed.Pinkowski, who served the last 21 years as the assistant principal and athletic director at Anderson High School, said the “time seemed right” to call it a career in the most satisfying job he has ever held. “I’m retired from the public schools,” said Pinkowski, who is 56. “If something fits my eye, I may want to do that. I have no hard plans. I’m retired from doing this. I’ll take it easy for a little bit. Some people have approached me already. I do have lots of options. I’ll see what’s out there.”Balancing the assistant principal and athletic director jobs was challenging, but rewarding, he said. “Most of my work was as assistant principal,” he said. “I spent time helping kids and helping teachers, evaluating half of the staff. I was proud to be able to help teachers become better at their craft. I was able to help kids with weight on their shoulders. Sometimes, they would be upset and crying. It was important to be able to lift their pain or concerns and make them whole again, to function and do well, to succeed and blossom.” The athletic director portion of the job required much of his time, whether it was hiring the best coaches that were SEE

The Pinkowskis also have two grandchildren thanks to Alexia and her husband Joseph: 4-year-old grandson Griffin and five-month-old granddaughter Lillia. Now that he’s retired, “I want to help out more with the family,” Pinkowski said. “I want to thank my wife and kids for all the support and my mom and dad for all their support over the years,” he said. “Without the support of a very understanding wife, there’s no way I could have done this job. You’re away all the time, especially during the grind months of January, February and March. There are events everyHavingday.”his children grow up and seeing them every day in the Southgate schools “was a blessing.”

The coaches have their equipment. There are forms for the kids to fill out. The parents have worries. It’s pretty much a year-round job.” He said it was especially challenging during the COVID-19 pandemic when schedules were restructured four times in the winter alone. Not that he has any regrets. He touted the high school’s three state championships and many league, district and regional titles during his time as AD. “It flew by,” Pinkowski said. “Thirty-one years flew by. It seems like yesterday I was coaching and teaching. We had some really great times and a lot of success with so many good teams over the years.” In fact, he is the longest-serving assistant principal/athletic director in Southgate history. “I feel great about it,” he said. “I was able to help a lot of kids. I helped make Southgate a better place because I was there. I left Southgate Anderson a better place. I helped make it better by advancing kids. We added programs (rowing, bowling and equestrian, among others) and helped improve the facilities and I had a hand in it. I wanted to make sure things were left in a positive note. “I know they will continue and get better and better. I did the best I could to make things better.” Kendall McVicker, the director of adult education in the district and a former college golfer, has been selected to succeed him. “I’m a Downriver boy who stayed Downriver,” Pinkowski said. “I was loyal to my district. A lot of people jump around. I felt it was important to stay in one spot and have my entire career in one spot.” Raised in Melvindale, Pinkowski is the son of the late Melvindale police officer John Pinkowski, who passed away two years ago, and his mother Lillian, who is 86. Before he was an educator, Pinkowski was a top athlete at Melvindale High School, where he was 1984 athlete of the year. He played for American Legion state championship teams at Post 409 both his junior and senior year and was a walk-on baseball player at the University of Michigan, where he majored in communications while earning two letters. Later, he earned a masters degree in teaching at Wayne State University and joined the Southgate schools as an educator and coach inHe1991.married high school sweetheart Tracy, who teaches kindergarten in Lincoln Park. They have three grown children, all of whom are Anderson alumni: daughter Alexia Mathews, who teaches kindergarten in Riverview; son Tyler, a former walk-on long snapper with the Western Michigan University football team who is finishing his masters degree in finance at Eastern Michigan; and daughter Brittia, who is in nursing school at Mercy College of Ohio in Toledo.

“I appreciate all of their love and support and patience,” especially when “I averaged 12 to 14 hours a day for three straight months,” he said. He also thanked his colleagues and co-workers.“Theywere great,” he said. “They put up with me in good times and bad times and pushed through making this a better place. I appreciate their support.”

1 teaspoon salt 1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Lightly grease an 8 1/2x4 ½-inch loaf pan. In a medium-sized bowl, beat together the brown sugar, liquid of choice, vegetable oil, eggs and vanilla until smooth. Whisk the baking powder, baking soda, salt and cinnamon into the flour, then add the dry ingredients to the liquid ingredients in the bowl, stirring or beating gently until smooth. Sir in the zucchini, walnuts and fruit. Scoop the batter into the baking pan and smooth if necessary. Sprinkle with the brown sugar. Bake for 55 to 65 minutes, until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. The toothpick shouldn’t reveal wet batter. Remove the bread from the oven and cool it in the pan for 10 minutes. Turn the bread out of the pan onto a rack to cool completely. For best results, don’t slice the bread until it is cool. Store the bread a cool room temperature, well wrapped, for several days. Freeze for longer storage.

In a large bowl, cream butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in egg, zucchini and lemon zest. Combine the flour, baking soda, baking powder, cinnamon and salt; gradually add to creamed mixture and mix well. Stir in the raisins and walnuts. Drop by tablespoonfuls 3 inches apart on lightly greased baking sheets or parchment paper. Bake at 375 for 8 to 10 minutes or until lightly browned. Remove to wire racks to cool. For the glaze, combine the confectioners’ sugar and enough lemon juice to reach a thin spreading consistency. Spread or drizzle over the cooled cookies. The cookies are wonderful with a cup of tea.

Zucchini has to be the most versatile vegetable in the world and is one of the healthiest, besides. My favorite among the zucchini recipes I made for this month’s column included a delicious cakey cookie studded with raisins and nuts and drizzled with a tangy lemon glaze. Because the recipe yields only about three dozen cookies, which disappeared quickly, you may want to bake a double batch.

I see these things as I go about and love them. I admire the civic initiative, the decisions made to make these things more than just ideas, and how darn cool they look in city after city, including the two I saw out west. The absence of these things is routine. It is much more normal to not see them. But when they are there, they make a difference, and indicate that those cities are examples of residents, businesses, non-profits, schools and government coming together to make sure that everyone gets the message that small is magic, and it doesn’t happen by accident.

Some I’ve seen feature chimineas for warmth that extends conversation areas well into colder weather. What a perfect tie-in to the Social District idea.*Small outdoor performing arts stages that encourage more community gatherings, that bring more people together in a town center or park to watch a mini play, listen to small musical acts, or give people a voice if they want such a chance. It is a powerful, unifying element, and again, especially if coordinated with the Social District idea. * Banners on light poles that market and publicize specific events, or “shop local” encouragement, or seasonal images, or high school spirit, or highlight the non-profits that are part of the heart and should of a city. There are a lot of reasons to have such a constant and creative force for unity and bragging.

Localism, folks, is a lot more than just supporting local businesses. It is about making our towns irresistible, and ours together.

When I see these things during trips near and far, I try to remember them and share them. It is not just unique shops and restaurants that ignite me, it is the towns themselves. Such towns are absolute magnets to other businesses that want to be a part of it all. Such towns find ways, together, to create such magnets.

To what, pray tell, do I refer? Well, there are many, but here are a few examples, in no particular order of importance as I see it:

* Permanent bricked conversation areas are awesome enablers that provide seating arrangements that foster such an idea. Several of them spread around the downtown area.

* Artistic crosswalks that engage pedestrian crossers, sometimes a different theme for every such intersection on main streets. Accomplished with paint! * Wayfinding sites that are updateable that help visitors find what they might be looking for. A map and a listing of businesses and parks and other points of interest, where one can see their choices for restaurants, for instance, is helpful and can be an interesting feature in design, in and of itself.*The encouragement of bicycle use, through cool parking stations.

guessedpopulatedthoseexperiencingwasdowntowns,by–youit–local and independent stores and restaurants galore.Sisters is a town of 2,709, while Bend is just under 100,000. But it’s never just the shops and restaurants that grab my attention in such an exploration of them-there cities. A huge part of the equation is the ways city governments and their departments integrate with local businesses and visionaries to create spaces that work to such an extent that without even focusing on it, people feel comfortable and energized and interested.Nomatter where I’ve been – and I’ve been to lots of towns – it is the combination of the elements of a city that generates “cool places to be.” There is almost no end to the things I’ve seen that make me covet and admire.Allof them create a sense of space that is compelling. All of them make people want to come back and explore more and appreciate more in their towns.Allof them are things to emulate, stimulate the imagination, and inspire creative thought. All of them are examples of possibilities to be executed in the towns in which we live, play, eat and drink and lead. Some of them create fundamental change, highly impactful and functional.Someof them are subtle and quirky, that make residents and visitors alike seek out more that might amuse and/ or stimulate the senses.

* Murals on blank walls of buildings or structures that are completely ignored. Allowing artists to show their talent and turn boring space into things that amuse or stun with their beauty requires the decision to be such a town. They also relieve store owners from having to maintain those blank walls that cost money to keep from looking decrepit.Onegreat example: Somebody painted the walls of the defunct overhead train track at King and Jefferson; it looks infinitely more interesting, and so much nicer. I love it.

* Flowers wherever they can be hung to create lushness and beauty. This requires a budget, which could easily be funded and maintained by asking for citizen and business support, because everyone loves flowers.*Social Districts work (look at Wyandotte), and are a real, marketable advantage over cities that have not enacted that simple policy. Strong, vibrant signage throughout the city that advises of the strict boundaries (by law), and calls out the participants by name, with support from those businesses and others that participate for the vibe it creates to raise all boats.

For those who like to nibble and nosh, the place to be on Aug. 9 was downtown Wyandotte, where The Southern Wayne County Regional Chamber this year held its annual Taste of Downriver dining event. The come-hungry event was presented by PNC Bank and, as usual, it drew thousands of Downriver residents anxious to try some specialties from many of Downriver’s finest eateries. Residents plunked down their money to try items from Major Biddle, The Vault, Mr. Nick’s, Joe’s Hamburgers and many, many others. Based on the looks on faces of the party goers, The Taste of Downriver was against a huge success.

The father-son league led to lots of open bowling, which led to the Anderson High School team and other tournaments, Saturday leagues and summer leagues, which led to Perok setting a goal to bowl in college.

Jeff Perok said Neal’s best average in high school was 178, although he did hit 184 in a trios league at Indian Lanes. While bowling at a “sports shot” tournament, he caught the eye of Siena Heights Coach Charles Cain. Such tourneys allow bowlers to compete on a more challenging college-level lane pattern, which has different amounts of oil compared to high school bowling.

Perok, who was a four-year varsity bowler at Southgate Anderson, is considered a freshman on scholarship at Siena Heights, where he was part of the team from February through April.

“I get winded super easily and get out of breath really quickly,” Neal said. “I’m happy that the passion I have for bowling is through the roof.”

Neal Perok has made the jump from high school varsity bowling to college bowling at Siena Heights University, a private Roman Catholic university in Adrian about 90 minutes from his hometown of Southgate.

“Neal bonded with the team almost immediately,” Coach Cain said. “He’s a solid young man. The family is solid… He’s not going to call a bunch of attention to himself. He’s doing well academically. He works hard in the classroom and hard on the lanes. I’m confident he’s going to do well because he works hard. He was able to bowl over the summer. He’s going to hit the ground running.”

“They assured me he would be cleared to bowl,” Cain said. “I told Neal that if he was aware of any issues to bring it to me immediately. Everyone needs to be aware of it.”

Perok said he enjoys bowling for Cain and enjoys his teammates. He said that coaches have made a difference in his relatively short bowling career, including Anderson coaches Sean Sevrence and Stacy Black-Quantz, who provided advice andThismotivation.semester, Perok has five classes, including two online. He said bowling days at the Lenawee Recreational Bowling Center can be long. Any spare time he has away outside of course work and bowling could find him playing video games.

Coach Cain said Perok has the right mix of being “coachable” and has “the drive to succeed at the sport.” “He’s like a sponge,” Cain said. “He’s willing to learn and do anything you ask him to try. He’s not afraid to fail.“I think the world of Neal. He’s such a fine young man. I wish I had a lot more copies of Neal… We’re glad to have him on the team.” Cain, a native of West Texas, is in his 13th season of coaching at Siena Heights. He was selected as coach when the university decided to add bowling as a sport. He said competition among the bowlers on the lanes determines who bowls in a particular tournament. Perok averaged in the 180s his first semester with the team.“A lot of it depends on how well they’re bowling and how they match up on the oil pattern,” the coach said. “Every bowler has a style. We want them to be proficient in many different things. Oil patterns make a difference.”Cainsaid he discussed Perok’s heart issue with Neal and his parents Jeff and Jennifer. His sister Julia, a chef, also has the heart condition.

Titans hang tough before falling to Trenton

Trenton added a fourth-quarter touchdown and extra-point and then had to sweat out a potential game-tying Southgate drive that ended with an interception in the Trenton end zone. When the Trenton football team took just two plays and 48 seconds to score against the Southgate football team in Andrson’s home opener on Sept. 1, it felt like nothing new. Afterall, Anderson had lost nine of the previous 10 meetings with the Trojans and had been outscored 154-6 in its previous four games against them.Same old, same old? Not this time. Yes, Trenton won the game, but the Trojans had to sweat mightily before pulling out a 28-20 decision over the resilient home team. After Trenton’s opening-drive score, Anderson answered back to tie the game. Trenton scored again in the second period and again Anderson answered and tied. In the third quarter, Trenton again took the lead before the Titans stormed down the field and scored. However, the extra point was blocked as Trenton maintained a 21-20 lead.

Trenton ran up 358 total yards in the game, most of it on the ground. Anderson had 296 yards, most of it through the air. Trenton had three players each with near or over 100 rushing yards. Quarterback Ty Norgren carried the ball a game-high 21 times for 123 yards.

But the game turned on two plays and senior Austin Toth was in on both of them.Inthe fourth quarter with his team clinging to a one-point lead, backed up inside its own 25-yard line and facing a fourth down, Toth took a high punt snap, brought the ball down and took off up the Trenton sideline for a 22-yard gain and a crucial first down. That play ignited the Trenton offense, which then marched down the field to score its fourth touchdown of the night on a 25-yard gallop by Culpepper.Ontheensuing drive, Anderson moved from its 29-yard line to inside the Trenton 20 where Anderson sophomore quarterback Jackson Sage fired a pass into the end zone only to have Toth pick it off. It was one of two mistakes the sophomore signal-caller made on the night, the other was a costly fumble that Trenton recovered at the Anderson 3-yard-line that led to the Trojans’ secondOtherscore.than that, Sage was on fire, completing 13-of-16 passes for 244 yards. His favorite target, senior Colin Thomas, was virtually unstoppable as he roamed free in the Trenton secondary and caught eight passes for 219 yards. Among the senior’s grabs were receptions of 52, 46 and 32 yards.Every time the Titans got in position to score, they relied on the same formula – a direct snap to running back Chase Barbosa. Barbosa, who quarterbacked the Titans each of the last two seasons, has adapted well to the running back position. He rushed 10 times for just 27 yards, but scored all three Anderson touchdowns on short runs. Barbosa now has five rushing touchdowns in the team’s first two games. Sage added 31 rushing yards on five carries and Hunter Druchniak kicked the first two extra points before having his third attempt blocked. Defensively for the Titans, Barbosa and Connor Ensign each had quarterback sacks and Ryan MacDonell recovered a Trenton fumble.Trenton got its touchdowns in the game on a 20-yard run by Norgren, a 6-yard run by Norgren, a three-year run by Norgren and the 25-yard run by Culpepper. Senior kicker Gabe Push made all four points after. The game was close and exciting, but was not a masterpiece by either team.Inaddition to the fumble at its 3-yard line, Southgate gave up a number of long runs that eventually led to Trenton scores. Trenton, on the other hand, had little success in stopping the Southgate passing game and the Trojans committed a costly holding penalty that wiped out a brilliant 73-yard scoring run by Culpepper. While Trenton opened the 2022 season with its big win over Chelsea, Anderson went to Dearborn where it blanked Downriver League rival Edsel FordThe19-0.names and the faces were the same in this victory as Barbosa rushed for two touchdowns and Thomas caught a 65-yard scoring pass from Jackson.Anderson traveled to Wyandotte on Sept. 9 and will host Dearbonr Divine Child on Sept. 16 ContinuedTouGHfrom page 20 2022 Roster 1 Kordell Ricumstrict 2 Isaac Norcia 4 Josh Gardner 6 Jace Walerski 7 Hunter Druchniak 8 Colin Thomas 9 Jackson Sage 10 Andrew Gates 11 Andrew Porter 12 Antonio Ruiz 13 Antione Johnson 14 Thomas Laskowski 16 Damiane Kenworthy 17 Ryan MacDonell 20 Jaxon Tsouris 21 Sean King 22 Aiden Gilley 24 Connor Ensign 25 Trevor Crites 27 Chase Barbosa 32 LaVelle Hughes 42 Henry Feller 50 Noah Clinton 52 Tyler Baker 54 Keegan Jackson 55 Martin Lofton 56 Ethan Brooks 57 Bradley Berner 58 Noah Siebert 59 Bobby Poore 60 Jake Howard 63 Nate Kassab 66 Rayaan Ismail 67 Drayden Long 68 Logan Tomocik 74 Weston Hartley 75 Logan Lynn 77 Logan Riddle 81 Ethan Emans

Many people - most, perhaps - go to an optometrist, get an eye exam and then follow the lady in the white coat over to the wall of frames and pick out a new set of glasses.

If that pretty much describes you, Bob Schmittou says there is something you should know: He can save you money, maybe lots of money. Schmittou, a proud military veteran, owns New Eyes Optical, located on 1616 Ford Avenue, right at 16th Street in Wyandotte.

Just bring your eyeglass prescription to him and see what kind of magic he can work for you.

“I am kind of like what the pharmacy is to your doctor,” Schmittou said. “Your doctor writes you a prescription. He doesn’t try to sell you the drugs. You go to the pharmacy. The same is true with us. You bring us a prescription and we will fill it.” New Eyes Optical does not accept insurance, but their low prices mean that is often not an issue.Schmittou has been in the eyeglass game for a long time. He enlisted in the Army after graduating from Lincoln Park High School and Uncle Sam sent him to school to learn how to make eyeglasses. He did that in the Army for nearly four years and then worked for Lenscrafters and for private doctors after that. In 2012 he opened New Eyes Optical and has been there ever since. Schmittou said he has over 1,300 frames in his building and can make arrangements to get others if customers come in with a specific brand or style in mind. For sunglass lovers, Schmittou said he has the largest selection of Ray Ban and Oakley sunglasses in the area. If you come in, you will deal with Schmittou himself. He and his wife Pam are the only employees. Schmittou does the fitting of the eyewear, and Pam orders frames and keeps the shop looking fresh by arranging the frame displays and decorating. So, if you are in the market for new glasses, would like a little personal attention and a really low price, give Schmittou a call at 313-587-4204, drop an email at neweyesoptical2012@gmail. com or contact them through their Facebook page, Facebook.com/neweyesoptical.
