The solar eclipse that occurred on the afternoon of April 8th was not the only significant event to take place that day. Earlier that afternoon, Congressman Shri Thanedar hosted a press conference in front of the Spirit of Detroit statue detailing the successful allocation of over $15 million in Community Project Funding within Michigan’s 13th Congressional District. These much needed projects included funding for neighborhood revitalization, flood mitigation, workforce development and infrastructure improvements. Congressman Shri Thanedar stated, “Since I arrived in Washington, I’ve made it a priority to bring the maximum amount of federal dollars back to our District.”
The City of Southgate received a $900,000 grant to install three pressure relief valves for their municipal water system. Congressman Thanedar further explained, “The funds for this project will go toward installing pressure relief valves, reducing strain on these old water mains and preventing breaks and shutoffs, making

PROJECT

Southgate’s water system safer and more reliable.”
Fresh water flows from the Great Lakes Water Authority (GLWA) plant in Allen Park into Southgate. At various times during the year, the plant experiences spikes in water pressure. According to Southgate’s DPS Director Kevin Anderson, “These changes in water pressure lead to an increased number of local water main breaks. With the installation of these relief valves, pressure related main breaks should be reduced by as much as 70%.”
It is anticipated that the relief valve installation will be completed during the spring of 2025.
The request for the pressure relief valves was originally submitted in March of 2023 through Congressman Thanedar’s Congressional Directed Spending portal. The Congressman recognized the value of the project and the City was notified that it would be included in the upcoming year’s budget proposal. During a visit in August, the Congressman and Mayor Joseph Kuspa discussed the project and
the impact it will have on residents. Mayor Kuspa recalls, “Shri was really interested in how he could help our community, especially in the realm of infrastructure improvements.” Mayor Kuspa continued, “This grant award is certainly a positive development for Southgate and exemplifies Congressman Thanedar’s commitment to bring funding back to the communities he represents.”
“I am proud to support a city like Southgate. Because of its smaller size, it can often get overlooked, but every citizen in every community deserves a clean and reliable water supply. That’s why I am hard at work in DC to ensure that there’s never a doubt about the water coming out of your tap,” said the Congressman.
In addition to the City of Southgate project, Congressman Thanedar announced funding for the cities of Dearborn Heights, Detroit, Grosse Pointe Park, Highland Park, Romulus and Wayne. The balance of the awards went to the Michigan Department of Transportation, Invest Detroit Foundation, Focus: Hope, Green Alleyways and the Great Lakes Water Authority.

Your Spring update on Southgate’s park projects
This year, the City of Southgate Parks & Recreation Department and its partners are working on bringing several park projects to life.
JULIE GODDARD Parks and Recreation Director
First, let’s dive into the developments at Cobb Park on Superior, Burns, and Trenton Road. This park has already undergone two phases of improvements. Phase 1 introduced the Tree Tops playscape for ages 5-12, a swing bank, and the popular Oodle swing for multiple users. It also featured a new pavilion, trash receptacles, and picnic tables. Phase 2 brought a matching Tree Tops playscape for ages 2-5 and the exciting We-Saw, providing a safe way for parents and kids to enjoy teetertottering fun. Phase 3 of the park’s enhancement recently commenced. This phase involves removing and
replacing the existing basketball court to install a new court with improved drainage, color coating, striping, and updated basketball hoops. Phase 4, approved at the last City Council Meeting, will follow shortly after Phase 3. It entails constructing off-street parking with striping on Burns, along with the installation of catch basins, storm sewers, and grading. Additionally, approximately 1,740 square feet of sidewalk, including ADA sidewalk ramps along Burns, will be poured. Once all construction is completed, new fencing will be installed around the park.
Waverly Park, nestled in the Waverly subdivision off Reeck Road near the Downriver YMCA, is set to undergo significant upgrades. Among them will be a new basketball court with improved drainage, color coating, striping, and updated basketball hoops. Later this year, the park will receive a transformative overhaul featuring the newly released Volo Structure from Landscapes Structures,
Inc. Alongside this structure, swings, a bobble rider, a saddle spinner, and a symbol communication board will be added. The inclusion of a communication board is particularly noteworthy, providing a means of communication through pictures and symbols for nonverbal, speech-challenged, and early learning individuals to interact with friends and caregivers. These boards are developed with guidance from experts in augmentative and alternative communication. Funding for the play area enhancements at Waverly Park is made possible by the Southgate Tax Increment Finance Authority (TIFA) Board. Special thanks are extended to the board for their commitment to enhancing this park for the benefit of our community.
McCann Park, situated off Eureka Road, is also slated for an exciting redesign. To be dubbed as Southgate’s “Tot Lot,” this revamped park will feature the innovative Smart Play Centre. Specifically designed for ages 3-5, the Smart Play Centre
will include a loft, fire station, and market café to provide children with imaginative play, physical activities, and learning prompts. In addition to the Smart Play Centre, the park’s play area will include a butterfly rider and bouncer, a saddle spinner, symbol communication signs, a swing bank decorated with whimsical flowers, and custom tables with shade. These enhancements promise to create an engaging and inclusive space for young children and their families to enjoy. Stay tuned for exciting developments as we work on re-imagining the entire municipal park complex throughout multiple phases over the coming years. Keep an eye out for our upcoming Recreation Master Plan Survey on our social media page and city website. There, you can share your input on what you’d like to see next for Southgate Recreation! Alumni skaters return for 3rd year
The 3rd Annual Southgate Hockey Alumni Game is set for Saturday, May 18th at the Southgate Ice Rink. Face-off is 5:00PM. The game features graduates of Anderson, Aquinas, Schafer, and Southgate High Schools, along with those who have played in the Southgate Hockey Association.
“We have some new players this year along with those who have played in the two previous games,” said event co-organizer, Dan Gretzner, Anderson ’84 graduate. “It’s a great time for the players and fans with player introductions, memorabilia, and lots of stories to be shared.”
Two father-son duos will be hitting the ice as well. Southgate resident
Mike Stabnau (Anderson ‘86) will skate alongside his son, Jeff (Trenton ‘08). Additionally, Jeff (Anderson ‘86) and Brendan (Anderson ’19) Rafferty, both Southgate residents, will each be goaltending. Also participating is Garret Presnell, a Southgate resident and an Aquinas graduate from 1983, who coaches Southgate youth hockey as well.
Admission is free and donations are accepted. All proceeds, after expenses, go to the Southgate Parks & Recreation Department to support youth hockey. In 2023, the game raised $613.
Friends of Southgate hockey are encouraged to join Southgate Hockey Memories on Facebook.

Titan baseball team tearing through the league
By HANK MINCKIEWICZ
Don’t look now, but there is something of an athletic renaissance going on at Southgate Anderson.
Two years after going 1-8, the football team finished third in the Downriver League and made the playoffs for the second consecutive year. The basketball team won 14 games and upset third-place Lincoln Park twice, including once in the district tournament. The Titans went all the way to the district finals before losing.
Now it’s the baseball team’s turn and halfway through the 2024 spring season, the Titans are not disappointing.
Fifteen games into the season, coach
Andy Green’s team finds itself with a 9-3 overall record. The Titans are 8-1 in Downriver League games and they sit atop the conference.
There have been plenty of big wins among the first 12, but none bigger than the 3-2 April 25 win at Allen Park. The loss was only the second of the year for Allen Park and its first in Downriver League play.
In that game, Anderson did all its scoring in one inning, the fourth.
A walk and a hit batter set the table for junior Juan Llanes, who singled home the game’s first run. Senior Jace Walerski followed with another single to plate the second run and Llanes
came home with the eventual gamewinner when Thomas Laskowski hit a sacrifice fly.
Llanes started and allowed no runs in five innings of work, So far this season, the junior hurler has a sub.-2.00 ERA.
Allen Park got two runs off the two relievers who followed Llanes to the hill, but the Titans got a 5-4-3 double play to end a threat in the sixth inning. The Jaguars went one-two-three in the bottom of the seventh.
Walerski’s two hits led the six-hit Titan attack. There were no errors in the game on either team.
Anderson is state-ranked in Division

2 for the first time in many years.
“If you’d have told me at the start of the year that we would be 12-3 and 8-1 in the league at this point, I would have taken it,” said second-year coach Andy Greene. “There are some really good teams in this league, Woodhaven, Trenton and Allen Park. We play hard and compete and, win or lose, that is what I expect from them.”
Other notches on the Titans’ gunbelt this season include a 3-1 road win over Trenton and a 6-2 decision over Woodhaven.
Woodhaven has become one of the top teams in the state in recent years and, although the Warriors are not having a particularly great season this year with a 9-8 record and three league losses already, a win over the Warriors always feels good.
Freshman Memphis Davenport and junior Logan Lynn each had key hits in the Woodhaven game.
The Titans are a pretty veteran team with some key younger players contributing at a high level. Green said he is not surprised at how well the youngsters are playing, but he is a little surprised that they have thrived at the varsity level so quickly.
the home team its first league loss. It was not a pretty game for Anderson as the team committed three errors and watched the Marauders break on top 7-0 early in the game. To their credit, the Titans fought back hard, but the early hole was too deep to crawl out of.
“Carlson just beat us,” said Green. “They were the better team that day. It was our worst game of the year and Carlson deserved to win”
Llanos and Senior Dylan Berrios are the team’s top pitchers.
Berrios, who is committed to play at Jackson Community College next season, can “flat out hit,” according to Green. An outfielder when he is not pitching, Berrios is 3-1 this year with a 2.50 ERA.
At the plate, there are all kinds of bats surrounding Berrios.
Llanes, a shortstop when not pitching, is hitting .423 this spring with five doubles.
Junior Thomas Laskowski, who pitches and plays all over the infield, is batting .412 with doubles. Freshman Davenport and sophomore catcher Rico Valdivinos are each heart-of-theorder hitters with averages hovering at or near .400. Valdivinos, who can also pitch, has also clubbed six doubles.
Tyler Schenck long jumped a season-best 17 feet at the Marauder Invitational but did not place.
“We have some young guys in really key positions and they all have developed quicker than I thought they would,” the Southgate coach admitted. “For the most part we have competed in every game this year. We’ve been having good at-bats, good pitching, and playing good defense.
“It’s a good mix that we have. The older players and the younger ones have formed a nice combination,” said Green
That formula fell apart a little when Carlson came to Southgate for a league game and beat the Titans 10-7, handing
The Titans were in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula on a team-building trip May 3-4. During the trip, the team was slated to play doubleheaders with Gladstone and Escanaba.
The second trip through the league competition began May 6 when the Titans hosted Trenton.
It may not be the last time the Titans and Trojans meet this year as both teams will begin the state tournament at a Michigan High School Athletic Association district tournament hosted by Trenton. Also in that district will be Riverview, Grosse Ile, and Summit Academy. District tournaments begin May 31.
Titans turnout at Marauder Invitational
The Southgate Anderson track team recently competed in the Marauder Invitational at Carlson High School. The Titans finished ninth among the 15 boys teams and 11th among the 15 girls’ squads.
This year’s event was billed at the Huron League vs. The Downriver League, as eight of the nine DRL teams participated and seven of the eight Huron League teams were there. Only Monroe Jefferson and Allen Park were absent.
Riverview, from the Huron League, won the boys event with 82.5 points. Milan was second with 71 points and Carlson and Huron tied for third with 69 points each. Southgate finished with 38.
On the girls side, the leagues shared top honors as DRL squad Woodhaven and Huron League representative Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central tied for first place, each with 92 points. Carlson was third with 58 points and Wyandotte and Flat Rock were just behind with 57 each. Southgate scored 22.5 points.
Individually, the Titan boys scored a first, second, third, and a fourth place.
Junior Seth Bodary took the only gold medal when he raced to the top spot in the 400 meters, running a personal best 50.89. He finished well ahead of second-place finisher Adam Johnson of Milan, who clocked 51.43.
Bodary’s classmate Tenelle Clemons was eighth in the race with a time of 53.47.
Anderson’s 4x200 relay team of Clemons, Bodary, Jackson Sage and Hunter Druchniak ran second to Milan. Junior shot putter Drayden Long tossed the shot 44-feet to finish third in that event. The shot put was won by Matt Foor of Airport with a throw of 49-1.75. Lincoln Park’s Nick Martinez was second at 46-5.5.
Sage was fourth in the 300 hurdles with a personal best 43.18.
Isaiah Daviston, DeAngelo Stewart, Connor Ensign, Adonis Golidy, LaVelle Hughes, and Malik Fadhl also scored for the Titans.
For the girls, Sparrow Centino was the star of the day.
The senior won the 800 meters by 10 seconds over second-place Keira Wood of Riverview. Centino ran a personal best, 2:24.92. The Southgate star then came back and posted the third best time in the mile run. She ran 5:26.90 to finish behind only Courtney Boviar of Airport and Bella LaFountain of Monroe SMCC.
Rylee Sturdahl, Renecia Hughes, Meadow Stewart, Joanna Ruci, Marylou Berner, Marissa Trombley, Mariah Crump, Scarlett Sage, Alana Gomez, and Julieann Nadolski all got in on the scoring for the Southgate girls.

Time to clear up the confusion about Estate Planning ... The following definitions lack legal precision, but makes it easier to get a clear picture of what may be needed in your case.
■ Will – letter of intent of where you want your personal property to go – or not go.
■ Living Will – Documents your wishes during your final days including final healthcare choices and possibly your burial wishes.
■ Trust – This is a “company” that you start, and you become the CEO, “Trustee” and “Settlor.” The company outlives you, but continues to manage your assets as if you were alive by the successor CEO – whom you designate.
■ Power of Attorney – Financial and Healthcare – you need both – the first so someone can pay your bills, the second, sometimes called a Patient Advocate, designates someone to make “hallway at the hospital” decisions to take the stress off the family.
■ Ladybird Deed – probably the best thing that has happened to owning a home. I love these deeds – you grant yourself a life estate – in your own property - but retain the power to sell or borrow against the property. If you do not sell before you pass, this “springs” the house out of your estate, and your heirs have instant ownership, subject to any mortgage or taxes owed or similar.
Again, this is just a general description of the more popular terms – no one choice is a “silver bullet” but depending on how your estate gets planned out you can expedite a clean and clear process for the assets you worked a lifetime to save. Why wouldn’t you want to do that? Stop by or call and make an appointment and I’ll tell you what you’re going to need to do this right.
To my numerous former clients – thank you for allowing me to draft your estate plan!

Team Rubicon coming to Grosse Ile
...Don’t be alarmed and take to social media with wild rumors of an invasion or a local version of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. They are members of Team Rubicon, “a veteran-led humanitarian organization, built to serve global communities before, during, and after disasters and crises.” Most notably, they assist FEMA (the Federal Emergency Management Agency) in disaster relief.
On that weekend, 20-25 Team Rubicon volunteers and support staff will be conducting training operations in Chainsaw Proficiency Development. They will be clearing and sawing trees which have been already marked by the Nature Conservancy and Greenways/Open Space committee. Team Rubicon does all their work on the ground and does not climb trees or conduct aerial cutting.
Grosse Ile Nature & Land Conservancy Stewardship Chair, Peter Kantz, explains, “This is a win-win situation for our natural areas and Team Rubicon. They use community projects such as ours for training volunteers and sharpening their skills. They like to cut up fallen trees and generally work on the weekends on projects that simulate disaster response.”...

figure skater ventures into international figure skating circuit
At just 13 years old, Adeline Chinavare, affectionately known as Addy, is already making waves in figure skating as she gears up to showcase her talent internationally. A student at Seitz Middle School, Addy is set to represent Team USA at the 8th Nations Cup. This
is a prestigious international competition for theatre on ice and synchronized skating that is to be held in France at the end of April.
Addy’s dedication to her skating is evident in her rigorous training schedule. The young skater spends close to 15 hours on the ice each week. She splits her time between Skate Company’s Skating Club in Lincoln Park, MI and The Ice House Skating Academy in Hartland, MI, home to the Harmony Theatre Company. The organization’s senior team has secured six national theatre on ice titles, making them the most successful team in the nation. Addy has been honing her skills on the ice since she was four years old. While her three siblings are also involved in skating, her older sister has greatly influenced her in her competitive journey. Addy aspires to be as talented and recognized as her older sister, who, in Addy’s words, is “really, really, REALLY good.”...
