Running for World Peace
The Sri Chimnoy Oneness-Home Peace Run once again passed through Southgate on August 1st. Founded in 1987, the Peace Run is a biannual worldwide relay run. Runners carry an Olympic style “Peace Torch” that is passed from hand to hand, person to person, and from nation to nation.
Over the 37 year history of the run, the Peace Torch has been carried over 370,000 miles. Over 7 million people have held the Torch in over 150 countries and on all seven continents.
The Torch has also passed through the hands of numerous international figures, including: Pope John Paul II, President Nelson Mandela, Carl Lewis, Mikhail Gorbachev, Mother Teresa, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Queen Elizabeth II. In 1996,
Cosmonaut Gennady Strekalov carried the Peace Torch into outer space and presented it to the American astronauts on the Space Station “Mir.” Mir is the Russian word for peace.
The Peace Run is dedicated to building bridges between people of all religions and cultures to strengthen the human bond that connects all people from all backgrounds. Founder Sri Chimnoy (1931-2007) dedicated his life to the fulfillment of the dream of world peace. He was highly regarded for a variety of creative accomplishments that promoted peace and harmony through music, art, and poetry.
Mr. Chimnoy expressed humanity’s age-old dream for peace in this way, “Peace SEE PEACE, Page 6

Seaway Chorale and Orchestra
With another successful season in the books, Downriver’s Seaway Chorale and Orchestra eagerly anticipates more delightful music for the 2024-2025 season. This past spring, the Chorale wowed audiences with a collection of popular Broadway hits, featuring powerful pieces from Hamilton, Phantom of the Opera, and Les Misérables. The performances were nothing short of spectacular. A highlight of the season was the return of Voices of the Young, an ensemble for ages eight to sixteen, whose charming performances captivated audiences. Their youthful enthusiasm brought a fresh energy to the stage.
This past Memorial Day, Seaway Chorale proudly participated in the annual Trenton Memorial Day Parade, hosted by the Trenton Civic Commission. They honored Veterans with stirring patriotic songs, and the Chorale looks forward to more community involvement in the upcoming season.
Prospective members are invited to be part of their musical family! The new season kicks off in late August, and Seaway Chorale and Orchestra are seeking talented new members. Auditions for adults are friendly and welcoming, so bring your heart and love for music. Auditions can be scheduled by calling 734-771-7991 or visiting www.seawaychorale.org.

Looking ahead, Seaway Chorale is excited to present spirited and beautiful Christmas music in December 2024, followed by a vibrant Spring show in May 2025. Each performance promises to envelop audiences in the spirit of the season, bringing joy to the heart through beautiful melodies.
Seaway Chorale and Orchestra are more than just a community chorus. They boast exceptional talent, a professional orchestra, and are proud to have Anthony Lai, head of the music department at Henry Ford
College, as their director. His leadership continues to inspire. Exceptional leadership continues throughout the organization, with Vanessa El Zein, who holds a music degree and directs both the Dearborn Voices and the Dearborn Youth Theatre. Longtin Giving Tree gives back in many ways
By SHANNON KASZUBOWSKI
In August of 2020, our family made the move from Wyandotte to Southgate. The tree-lined street and large tree in the front yard only added to the charm of our new home. We could envision what the yard would look like, with that tree being a key feature. We enjoyed the shade from the early morning sun, and loved listening to the rain on the leaves during an evening storm.
The tree was home to a variety of local wildlife. A cardinal family, nuthatches, woodpeckers, and many squirrel families had fun enjoying the tree. We started enhancing the tree with feeders for the birds and squirrels, and soon, the fairies had arrived.
Fairy doors, windows, and seasonal decor provided a magical game for the neighborhood children. They would check to see if any new fairies had arrived while on their walks. They would wander around the tree, searching for any signs of new doors. The laughter and talk of magic from the children were truly heartwarming.
With the strong storms and winds that come through the area, branches were falling regularly. We even began noticing large limbs falling without the presence of a storm. It was becoming hazardous, and the city decided it was time for the tree to come
down. We were saddened, not only that we would lose our tree, but the animals, their home, and the neighborhood, its magic.
Our family had always wanted to build a “Little Free Library.” After some research, a vision was born: a way for the tree to continue providing for so many, as it had before. Fortunately, the city was kind enough to work with the Forestry Department to leave enough of the tree to be the foundation of our new Little Free Library.
The tree construction attracted attention from neighbors, animals, passersby, and even delivery drivers. We were amazed at how many people were eagerly waiting to see the final result. When it was finally finished, we were pleasantly surprised—our vision had come to life even better than we had imagined.
The tree is now giving back more than we ever imagined. It now houses donations of various items and books, offers a puppy pit stop, and includes a small cubby for seed sharing.
Next time you’re out on a stroll, please stop by 14502 Longtin, and visit the Longtin Giving Tree. On August 24th, we will be hosting a small grand opening for the tree. Feel free to stop by, give, take, or just check it out.
PEACE
Continued from page 1
does not mean the absence of war. Peace means the presence of harmony, love, satisfaction and oneness. Peace means a flood of love in the world family.”
Another aspect of the global relay is to meet with children to explain the spirit of the Torch Run and to discuss the importance of peace, world harmony and mutual understanding. During the recent Southgate visit, runners met with dozens of children and adults at the Downriver YMCA. The runners who participated in this event represented countries from around the world. The main speaker was Salil Wilson from Australia. He was joined by Anna Khimchinskaya (Russia), Dalibor Ficel (Slovakia), Edgars Acans (Latvia), Gianluca Marangan (Croatia), Harita Davies (New Zealand), Mahasatya Janczak (Poland), Ruslana Kupinetc (Ukraine), and Todorka Petrovska (Macedonia).
During the presentation, the runners told stories about their countries and interacted with the children through song and dance. There was also an opportunity to hold the Torch and run through the gymnasium and onto the YMCA grounds. Emily Oetting, Director of the Downriver YMCA, felt that the visit was a great experience for the children and staff of their Summer Day Camp. She stated that, “We strive to provide unique and interesting activities for our young campers. The chance to meet and interact with the Peace runners from so many
countries and backgrounds was truly a special time for all of us.”
At the conclusion of the event, Mayor Joseph Kuspa was presented with the Peace Run TorchBearer Medal. This award was created to recognize and honor those individuals who have inspired and served their nations, their cities and their communities. Mayor Kuspa first invited the Peace Run in 2010 during the annual Southgate Heritage Days celebration. He subsequently welcomed the runners in 2012, 2016, and again this year. During each visit he was able to carry the torch and run with the international runners. Michigan coordinator of the Peace Run, Professor Kapila Clara Castoldi, who has worked with Kuspa on this international event
over the past 15 years, stated, “We all believe that Mayor Kuspa deserved this recognition for all the good work he has done over the years.” In response to receiving the Torch-Bearer medal, Kuspa stated, “I am extremely honored to have been recognized in this way. The Peace Run represents the good in people across this country and throughout the world. It is extremely humbling to think that I am now a part of that incredible history.”
Joining the Mayor in welcoming the runners to the City of Southgate were City Clerk Jan Ferencz, City Council President Zoey Kuspa, and Councilmembers Priscilla Ayres-Reiss and Ed Gawlik.

State primary election results 2024
On August 6th, the State Primary Election occurred. Voters made pivotal choices for both partisan and nonpartisan positions that will carry some of their choices to the General Election in November, as well as deciding on important proposals affecting local communities. Under the Democrat section, a key race included the choice between Hill Harper and Elissa Slotkin for U.S. Senator, with Slotkin
taking over 60% of the vote. On the Republican side, voters could choose between Justin Amash, Sherry O’Donnell, Sandy Pensler, or Mike Rogers. Rogers won with nearly 68% of the vote. For the Representative in Congress for the 13th District, three Democrats ran, Shakira Lynn Hawkins, Shri Thanedar, and Mary Waters. Thanedar will move onto the General with 54% of the vote. Two Democrats, Joan Merriewether and Raphael Washington, and two Republicans, Articia Bomer and T.P. Nykoriak, ran for Sheriff. Washington and Nykoriak will vie for the seat in the fall. For the 27th District State Representative seat, three Republican candidates sought the nomination, Cody Dill, Rylee Linting, and Maria Mendoza-Boc. Linting, with over 70% of the vote, will move on to the November ballot. On the nonpartisan side, three candidates ran for Judge of the 3rd Circuit Court, Nicole Leighanne Castka, John Larkin, and Adrienne G. Scruggs. Larkin secured the seat with 40% of the vote.
There were two Wayne County proposals on the ballot: Proposition P and Proposition A. Proposition P seeked to renew the parks millage initially authorized in 2020. This proposition proposee levying the millage at the 2023 rollback rate of 0.2442 mills (approximately $0.24 per $1,000 of taxable valuation) for an additional five years, from 2026 through
2030. If approved, the funds would be used to continue the improvement and operation of various parks and related facilities across Wayne County. This includes Hines Park, Elizabeth Park, the Wayne County Family Aquatic Center at Chandler Park, and other municipal parks in the county’s 43 communities. The millage would be allocated through an annual distribution, ensuring that each commission district receives the greater of $50,000 or 15% of the total funds generated from that district. Additionally, Wayne County is required to maintain its park budget at a level equivalent to its 1995-1996 fiscal year appropriation. Based on the projected taxable value of $59.25 billion for 2026, this renewal is expected to generate approximately $14.47 million. Prop P passed with 74% of the vote.
Proposition A proposed an amendment to Wayne County Charter Section 3.119(e), which pertains to the selection and term length of the county’s independent external auditor. The amendment would allow the auditor, chosen through a competitive bidding process, to serve a term of three years or more. This change aimed to enhance the stability and continuity of financial oversight within Wayne County. Prop A passed with 54% of the vote.
Until November.

“green” anniversary
Southgate has received prestigious recognition from the National Arbor Day Foundation, reaffirming the City’s status as a proud member of TREE CITY USA. This marks a significant milestone as it commemorates the 30th consecutive year of receiving this esteemed honor. To celebrate this achievement, new signage highlighting Southgate’s 30th year will be installed at key entrances throughout the city. Congratulations to Southgate’s dedicated City Forester, Bob Tarabula, and the entire DPS Department for their unwavering commitment to fostering the growth and significance of trees within the community. Time to clear up the confusion about Estate Planning ... The following definitions lack legal precision, but makes it easier to get a clear picture of what may be needed in your case.
■ Will – letter of intent of where you want your personal property to go – or not go.
■ Living Will – Documents your wishes during your final days including final healthcare choices and possibly your burial wishes.
■ Trust – This is a “company” that you start, and you become the CEO, “Trustee” and “Settlor.” The company outlives you, but continues to manage your assets as if you were alive by the successor CEO – whom you designate.
■ Power of Attorney – Financial and Healthcare – you need both – the first so someone can pay your bills, the second, sometimes called a Patient Advocate, designates someone to make “hallway at the hospital” decisions to take the stress off the family.
■ Ladybird Deed – probably the best thing that has happened to owning a home. I love these deeds – you grant yourself a life estate – in your own property - but retain the power to sell or borrow against the property. If you do not sell before you pass, this “springs” the house out of your estate, and your heirs have instant ownership, subject to any mortgage or taxes owed or similar.
Again, this is just a general description of the more popular terms – no one choice is a “silver bullet” but depending on how your estate gets planned out you can expedite a clean and clear process for the assets you worked a lifetime to save. Why wouldn’t you want to do that? Stop by or call and make an appointment and I’ll tell you what you’re going to need to do this right.
To my numerous former clients – thank you for allowing me to draft your estate plan!

Summer 1949 revisited A tale of mud and memories
... As we began walking, I spotted a tennis ball covered in mud in a ditch, likely lost or discarded by someone. I picked it up and rubbed off most of the mud and dirt, transforming it into what you could call a toy. This simple find led us to a lifetime of joy and wonderful memories. I bounced the ball a couple of times and then threw it to Wayne. He did the same and then threw it back. We played catch for a while until he suddenly threw it hard, sending it over my head. I chased after it and finally caught up with it in front of a party store on the corner of Kercheval and Hurlbut.
As we stood there, we heard loud cheering coming from an outdoor speaker connected to a radio inside the store. It was the Detroit Tigers’ first baseball game of the season, and the cheering was for an inside-thepark home run by the Tigers’ centerfielder, Johnny Groth, which had just put the Tigers ahead. Wayne and I, both fond of playing a little softball at school,
stood on that corner and listened for a while, soaking in the excitement.
We continued to our grandparents’ house, and as we walked inside, we could hear the same game playing on their radio. Believe it or not, Johnny Groth was up to bat again, and he hit another home run—two home runs in the opening game of the year! The Tigers went on to win the game, with Hal Newhouser as the winning pitcher. My Grandpa, a longtime Tiger fan, shared many stories about baseball and the Tigers with us. From that day on, Wayne and I became lifelong fans

Inaugural Downriver VA clinic opens in Trenton
The path to health and wellness for Downriver Veterans just got shorter, by miles! The Detroit VA Healthcare System opened the first-ever Downriver VA Outpatient Clinic on June 3rd, 2024. The clinic is located at 1640 W. Fort Street in Trenton in
the Professional Art Centre building just south of King Road. It will offer a full scope of primary care services and be connected to their network of specialty care providers and services.
“We are so thrilled to bring care closer to Veterans in the Downriver community,” said Chris Cauley, Detroit VA Executive Director. “This is part of an effort by VA to lessen the drive time for Veterans to their VA appointments in the region.” Detroit and Ann Arbor are the only other two closest locations for service.
Sherri Gramlich, Army Veteran, Chaplain for the American Legion, Post 426 in Trenton, and Squad Leader for EXP Realty’s Veterans Network for Michigan noted the importance of this location: “It especially makes it better for seniors! Assisted living facilities will be able to transport some of the older Veterans which is a godsend. Those that are not able to drive often have to find someone to take them for even the most routine visits. This is amazing for all of us!” Trenton resident Susan Phillips agrees, “Driving to Ann Arbor has gotten much more difficult with the aggressive drivers and with us getting older. This will be fantastic.”....
