CULINARY CAPERS If you need ideas for side dishes to serve at your next barbecue or other outing, EVELYN consider Orange Rice CAIRNES with Raisins; Lemon Southgate Star and Asparagus Orzo Salad; and Watergate Salad. All are so delicious, that I can’t decide which I like the best. I got the recipe for the rice, which is wonderful with grilled chicken and really easy to make, from Shelley Dalley of Grosse Ile, who got it from Kathy Boudrie of South Rockwood, who got it from her mother, who got it from an old Pillsbury cookbook. The recipe for the pasta salad was posted on the Henry Ford Health System Live Well website, along with a photo and a video of how to prepare it. Ideas for adapting the recipe with other pastas and vegetables and nutritional values were included as well. The salad can be served at room temperature or cold and travels well to a picnic or other outing. You may not remember the Watergate Salad, which was popular in the 1970s and ‘80s, but you may remember the President Richard Nixon scandal involving the 1972 break-in at the Watergate office complex for which the salad is named. There are stories galore about the origin of the salad, which I would call a dessert rather than a salad. Among the rumors are that the salad was concocted by a sous chef at the Watergate Hotel, and that Kraft Foods created the salad to introduce its new pistachio pudding mix. Nevertheless, it is the most addictive whatever-you- call-it that has ever crossed my lips, and takes only about five minutes to make. ORANGE RICE WITH RAISINS 1 stalk celery, sliced into 1/4-inch pieces 3 tablespoons butter or margarine 1 cup white or brown rice 1 ½ cups water 2 tablespoons grated orange rind 1 cup orange juice ½ cup raisins or currants ½ teaspoon salt 2 tablespoons honey Cook celery in butter until tender. Stir in rice. Add water, orange rind, orange juice, raisins, salt and honey. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to very
low. Cover and cook 20 to 30 minutes (40 to 50 for brown rice) or until the rice is tender. Makes 5 to 6 servings. If desired, sprinkle ¼ cup toasted almonds or chopped pecans over the rice before serving. LEMON, ASPARAGUS ORZO PASTA SALAD ½ cup lemon juice 2 teaspoons lemon zest 2 cloves garlic, minced 1/8 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper ¼ cup olive oil 2 cups dry orzo pasta 1 pound asparagus, cut into 1-inch pieces 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley ½ cup diced green onion ¼ cup feta cheese crumbles Lemon slices for serving In a small bowl, whisk together lemon juice, lemon zest, garlic, salt, pepper and olive oil. Set aside. Bring water to a boil; add orzo and cook until tender, about 10 minutes. Add asparagus the last 2 minutes of cooking. Drain, but do not rinse. Add warm orzo and asparagus to a large mixing bowl. Add dressing and parsley. Mix well. Top with green onion, feta and lemon slices. Serve chilled or at room temperature. Note: You may want to cut the recipe in half, as it makes a lot. Other pastas can be substituted for orzo, and your favorite vegetable in season for asparagus. The addition of grilled chicken, steak or shrimp would transform the salad into a main course. WATERGATE SALAD FROM THE 1970s 4-serving-size package instant pistachio-flavor pudding mix 20-ounce can Dole Crushed Pineapple, undrained 1 cup miniature marshmallow ½ cup chopped pecans 1 ½ cups thawed whipped topping Combine dry pudding mix, crushed pineapple, marshmallows and pecans in a large bowl until well blended. Gently stir in whipped topping. Cover and refrigerate 1 hour or until ready to serve. HAPPY EATING! (Contact me at Evycairns@aol.com.)

To honor and respect
The Wall that Heals coming to Downriver Aug 12-15 The Wall That Heals, a threequarter scale replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial along with a mobile Education Center, is coming to the city of Riverview, Aug. 12-15, 2021. The exhibit will be on display at Young Patriots Park and will be open 24 hours a day and free to the public. Ceaser Capital Management, the city of Riverview and Riverview American Legion Post 389 are leading the effort that will bring the exhibit to the city. The Wall That Heals honors the more than three million Americans who served in the U.S. Armed forces in the Vietnam War and it bears the names of the
58,276 men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in Vietnam. “The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund is pleased to bring The Wall That Heals mobile exhibit to Riverview to allow local veterans and their family members a chance to experience The Wall. “We will work carefully with the host to provide a safe opportunity for the
community to experience the healing and educational aspects of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial,” said Jim Knotts, president and CEO of VVMF. “Hosting The Wall That Heals provides an opportunity to honor and remember all those who served and sacrificed in the Vietnam War and educate visitors on the continuing impact of the Vietnam War on
America.” Visitors will be encouraged to wear masks and practice social distancing to safeguard the staff, volunteers and other visitors. “Nothing is more important to VVMF than the health and well-being of our Vietnam veterans and their families. We will work closely with the host to make certain that all health and safety protocols are met in order to provide the best visitor experience while keeping the safety of our staff, volunteers and visitors at top of mind,” said Knotts. is transported from community to community in a 53-foot trailer. When parked, the trailer opens with exhibits built into its sides, allowing it to serve as a mobile Education Center telling the story of the Vietnam War, The Wall and the divisive era in American history. The three-quarter scale Wall replica is 375 feet in length and stands 7.5 feet high at its tallest point. Visitors will experience The Wall rising above them as they walk towards the apex, a key feature of the design of The Wall in D.C. Visitors are able to do name rubbings of individual service member’s names on The Wall. The mobile Education Center exhibit includes: digital photo displays of “Hometown Heroes” - service members whose names are on The Wall that list their home of record within the area of a visit; digital photo displays of Vietnam veterans from the local area honored through VVMF’s In Memory program which honors veterans who returned home from Vietnam and later died as a result of their service; video displays that teach about the history and impact
of The Wall; educational exhibits told through items representative of those left at The Wall in D.C.; a replica of the In Memory plaque; a map of Vietnam and a chronological overview of the Vietnam War. The exhibits tell the story of the Vietnam War, The Wall
and the era surrounding the conflict, and are designed to put American experiences in Vietnam in a historical and cultural context.

Since its debut in 1996, the exhibit has been on display in nearly 700 U.S. communities in addition to an April 1999 tour of the Four Provinces of Ireland and a visit to Canada in 2005. The Wall That Heals is a program of VVMF, the nonprofit organization that built the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. in 1982. The Wall That Heals is the only traveling exhibit affiliated with The Wall in Washington, D.C. and includes the largest Wall replica that travels the country. Two VVMF staff members lead volunteers on site, educate visitors and students, and ensure the reflective atmosphere of The Wall. About VVMF The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund (VVMF) is the nonprofit organization that built the Vietnam Veterans Memorial (The Wall) in Washington, D.C. in 1982. VVMF continues to lead the way in paying tribute to our nation’s Vietnam veterans and their families. VVMF’s mission is to honor and preserve the legacy of service in America and educate all generations about the impact of the Vietnam War and era through programs, ceremonies and education
materials. To learn more about VVMF, visit www.vvmf.org or call 202-393-0090.

Come experience summer fun at Grosse Ile Yacht Club Grosse Ile Yacht Club is the perfect place to get your summer on. The nearly century-old club located on the Southeastern tip of Grosse Ile features access to the Detroit River and Lake Erie, swimming, boat dockage, good food, fun and the fellowship of others who enjoy the boating lifestyle. And the good news is, the club wants you to join. Grosse Ile Yacht Club is having a membership drive and the club is throwing open its doors several times this summer with open house galas that will allow non-members to come over, check out the facilities, get to know members, check out membership options and have a great time doing it. As part of its “Summer Series,” the club will host a number of open house events, open to the public to come in, look around, ask questions and see if the club with the best view of Lake Erie is right for you. The Summer Series is sponsored by BAM Designs, Milkens.com, Grosse Ile Grand Newspaper, McLaughlin’s Furniture, Boaters Value, B&D Vacuum, Rosenau Powersports, Taylor Chevrolet, Groat Brothers, MBA Realty and the Crysler family. The next open house is July31. Drop by and see what the club has to offer. The club will roll out its state-of-the-art stage and live music from some of Downriver’s most popular bands will fill the air. Listen by the club’s welcoming fire pit or the
marina patio or take in the music and the amazing views from the new upper deck Tiki bar. Whatever you do, you are likely to feel at home. “The club is beautiful,” said Vice Commodore Will Evans, “the views are phenomenal, but it’s the people I am most impressed with. When we first came to Grosse Ile Yacht Club we were greeted with warm welcomes and smiles. It is what drew us to the club.” Evans said the club has a safe and protected harbor with deep water wells that allow the club to accommodate virtually any size boat. The club offers winter storage facilities, a 10-ton travel lift and two-ton single point lift for haul out and launch of both large and small boats, and pump out facility. Dock your boat here and leave your worries behind. But the GIYC is more than a place to just dock your boat. It’s a place to meet and make friends. It’s a great place to eat or spend quality family time. It’s a great place to get easy access to the area’s best resource - Lake Erie and the Detroit River. “This is a great location for Lake Erie and the Detroit River boating and sailing,” said Evans. “There is protected anchorage nearby, it’s a wonderful place to hang out and it provides access to one of the world’s best fisheries.” The expansive outdoor patio wraps around three sides of the clubhouse
overlooking the Detroit River and Lake Erie. The patio plays host to both dining and cocktail service and serves as the setting for the club’s “Music on the Patio” series. The club also features a lake-facing “front lawn” with access to the water and a swim raft for those who like to get into the water. Another benefit of Yacht Club membership is the extraordinary reciprocal agreements with so many other clubs. The club is affiliated with the Detroit River Yachting Association - DRYA, the Inter-Lake Yachting Association – ILYA, and with Associated Yacht Clubs- AYC, as well as most Grosse Ile area private clubs and offers reciprocal services to members of these affiliated clubs, including guest dockage and dining and use of our facilities. “That’s a big benefit of joining the club,” admitted Evans. “Your membership will allow you to visit most any other club around the country or around the world.” Sailing is a main attraction Have you ever wanted to learn to sail? Or are you a sailor trying to quench that competitive thirst? The GIYC is the place for you. The junior sailing program provides learn-to-sail instruction and on-thewater safety to youth aged 8-18. The program also includes a junior sailing racing team to foster competition
throughout the Midwest. The junior program is open to both members and non-members alike. For adults, the club has a sailing program headed by noted local yachtsman Brian Hartwell. The club offers sessions of four classes, taught both on the water and onshore, over a one-month period during the summer months. Classes are held once a week on weeknight evenings and focus on basic sailing techniques and on water safety, using the curriculum followed by US Sailing in their learn-to-sail classes. Students (members or nonmembers) get the opportunity to steer, trim sails and learn to safely take their boat away from the dock and return. Multiple sessions may be offered throughout the summer, dependent on interest and class size. And for those who already know how to sail and want to test themselves, the club has organized Spring, Summer and Fall local Lake Erie racing programs and participates in regional Great Lakes racing events (Mackinac, Put-In-Bay etc.). GIYC memberships are very economical and come with great benefits. Join with, “Great people, Great Lakes, Great times.” Grosse Ile Yacht Club, 29677 East River Road (734) 676-0211, Public is invited to the Summer Series Open House, Saturday, July 31 starting at 6:30pm.

Dingell Welcome Center at Refuge finally opens After many years in the making, the wait is finally over: The John D. Dingell, Jr., Visitor Center at the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge is now open! Named after the late congressman, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is proud to dedicate this building to him in honor of, and to help continue, his conservation legacy. In a wonderful coincidence, the visitor center was opened on his birthday, July 8. The Dingell family have always been avid supporters and protectors of the natural beauty of our area. It was part of the vision of John D. Dingell, Jr., to have a facility where the public can come to learn about and connect to the Detroit River and its surrounding areas. The realization of his vision could be heard as children played in the building and searched for hidden features in the exhibits and filled the center with smiles, laughter and life. Reaching this moment is something the staff at the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge have always strived for and they will continue to work hard to be a welcoming place where urban residents can both connect with and be inspired by nature. It’s been a long journey to get to where we are today. Did you know that from 1946-1990 an automobile
company operated an automotive component manufacturing plant on what is now the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge? This manufacturing plant included the production of brakes and associated adhesives, oils, and sealers. During its years of operation, the land around the site became increasingly polluted. It took multiple years of environmental cleanup to get the site ready
for public visitation. The visitor center will be open Thursday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The grounds around the facility are open for self-guided visitation seven days a week during daylight hours. Come visit us at 5437 West Jefferson Ave., Trenton, MI 48183, or check out our website and Facebook page.

Looking good Fixing up the grounds around the Southgate School District’s buildings has become a popular community activity for students, teams, groups and some teachers. Recently it was Davidson Middle School’s turn. Led by teachers Sam Childs (the big face in front) and Ms. Smith, a group of students had a good time planting, cleaning up and giving the school grounds a fresh new look.

One of the things I value the most as a local and independent merchant is the opportunity to talk to the people that visit us. It is the missing link with much today - the interest in understanding each other. Stores like ours serve as something of community forums, loosely and informally. People are still airing grievances with the way our governor handled the whole thing, many others feeling that they are grateful we had someone that did what had to be done. The truth PETER is somewhere in the middle of the ROSE Southgate Star spectrum of perception. I just know that I didn’t have to make those calls. Those that are the angriest about it all are the businesses that felt the death grip of being closed down. Some businesses absolutely thrived during this nightmare, and that’s part of the magic that underpinned us while so much else was on pause. Closing the economy down is an unthinkable challenge. Way above my paygrade, let me tell you. The incredible way it all somehow works, with monies changing hands in every niche of our economy has to be sorcery. There’s no way this thing should actually work. But it does.
So it is a relief to feel things percolating, with restaurants operating with no limits and people now going about with no masks. People going to movies and ball games and weddings makes my business necessary again and enables us to contribute to the economy. I don’t publicly share numbers about our businesses. But June was our best June in over 23 years. It doesn’t make me confident; it makes me supremely satisfied, but I remain cautious and defensive while still trying to be what we’ve always been. Just because it’s good today does not guarantee that it will be great tomorrow, but you know, being unwilling to accept it and enjoy it keeps us in the prison cellar. So I’m optimistic! Especially because this figurative earthquake forced rethinking of so much about our stores, and hopefully, these early indicators are solid signposts for the roads ahead. The same goes for all elements of our economy. It will be quite a while before supply chain issues are resolved and operating more on a normal basis. But it’s getting better, and it feels very good - less scary, less ominous. Ours is a business that operates by confidence, looking forward six months as we do initial buys for upcoming seasons. How can I buy if I have no belief that I have my fingers on the multitudinous pulses I have to think through. In a month, I’ll be deciding what
I believe our stores will have to do to satisfy the needs of a customer that is still more casual than before. That is what I do, and I’m very enthusiastic about getting back into that groove. This column is now four years running, one article per month for 48 months. You know what the basis is, and I think you know what I’m talking about as I point out the radical differences between being just another faceless number as a consumer in a national chain of any variety, or worse, of internet buying. I talk about it because when I stop, I hear no other voices calling for the return to personal service where the dollars spent benefit the spender almost instantly. I don’t talk about it so you’ll patronize my store in particular. I want you to consider every purchase and think about how much better it is to keep it local, so that towns like Wyandotte can offer a killer downtown in which to do all manner of business. If local stores and restaurants fail here, there will be no nationals lined up to save Wyandotte. They don’t care about Wyandotte or Downriver or any other area. If our cities go the wrong way, it will likely now be impossible to restore that magic. So I write to make that truth more real, and to get everyone to realize that they have the power to make an enormous, positive difference. Wield that power, Downriver!

Ways to improve your health in under five minutes
Use the stairs instead of an elevator You can climb one flight of stairs in less than 30 seconds and it’s a great way to increase blood flow. Add one extra glass of water into your day Create a goal to drink one additional glass of water each morning as a part of our wake-up routine. Work on your balance now - your older self will thank you You can do this by adding balance exercises into your daily routine. How? Start by balancing on one leg at a time for just ten seconds each. Repeat a few times. Stop back pain by changing your habits It’s often said that the little things in life matter
most - and we believe it - especially when it comes to back pain. The choices we make every day can contribute to whether we’re feeling good or dealing with problems in our body. If you’re struggling with back pain, give these daily habits a try to see if they help you feel better. If not, we’re just a phone call away. 1. Exercise your core. Strong abdominal muscles may help reduce back related injuries. 2. Consume more calcium and vitamin D. Both are connected to osteoporosis prevention. 3. Quit smoking. Nicotine can restrict blood flow

Founder Kris Jordan is recognized for her leadership A nonprofit animal clinic with roots in Riverview is being celebrated for surpassing 70,000 spay and neuter procedures in its 10 years of operation. The PAWS Clinic, located at 21210 Goddard Road in Taylor, has been in business since September 2011 and is still going strong. dave gorgon The agency recently expanded its offerings Southgate Star by launching an animal vaccine clinic after hearing from many clients who were having difficulty scheduling appointments for vaccines and basic wellness services at their regular veterinarians during the COVID-19 pandemic. “The PAWS Clinic is a very wellrun facility,” said Riverview resident Eve Howell. “It may be low-cost, but it doesn’t spare any service for the cats or dogs. They are skilled and loving individuals who work there. I’ve taken many of my family pets to get spay and neutered. I’ve also volunteered several times and have been witness to the loving and professional manner they treat their patients.” In the Beginning PAWS’ origins date back to 2007. Kris Jordan of Riverview was a founding member and board member of PAWS of Michigan, a Riverviewbased rescue organization for dogs and cats. That organization placed more than 2,500 homeless dogs and cats into loving homes. Jordan said she was simply an “animal lover” who was passionate about looking out for the welfare of pets. “My parents loved animals and I was always raised with animals,” she said. “Not having an animal doesn’t seem like a possible thing for me. I have two dogs, four cats and a turtle.” While volunteering for PAWS of Michigan, Jordan and a small group of volunteers realized there was a real need in the Downriver area for low-cost spay and neuter services. They organized and ran monthly shuttles, using their personal vehicles to transport animals to low-cost clinics in Toledo and Warren.
Recognizing that the shuttles were not making the impact needed to decrease the number of animals admitted to shelters, they decided to open a low-cost, highquality non profit spay/neuter clinic in the Downriver area. Volunteers attended a conference sponsored by PetSmart Charities and worked toward opening their own affordable spay/neuter clinic. They applied to the Human Alliance organization Asheville, North Carolina (now ASPCA Spay/Neuter Alliance) and were accepted into the group’s mentorship program. “Our founding members realized that, while finding homes for homeless animals was a very worthwhile endeavor, it did nothing to address the problem of why animals were homeless in the first place,” Jordan said. “Many of these members volunteered at a local shelter prior to forming PAWS and saw first-hand the enormity of the overpopulation crisis and the tragedy of having to euthanize healthy adoptable animals simply because there are not enough homes.” After 2½ years of fundraising and grant writing ensued. The effort included an intense, but successful, effort to win $50,000 in the Pepsi Refresh Project in 2010. The PAWS Clinic was launched in September 2011
in Taylor, where it remains today. In 2017, the clinic completed a major expansion, which allowed the facility to meet an increasing demand for services. The clinic now occupies 5,000 square feet of space and has 17 employees and six volunteers. Working tirelessly Jordan is considered the “driving force” behind the clinic. She worked tirelessly on the building and remains active in daily operations. People close to the clinic said Jordan brings a wealth of experience to PAWS from her prior career in administrative and human resource positions. She is the chief grant writer for the clinic and has secured nearly $300,000 in funding for the clinic since its inception. She also assists in making appointments, helping with the care of animals and cleaning. Most of the grants have been utilized to further subsidize the surgery cost for pet owners and feral cat caretakers. The grant funding and the low-cost spay and neuter service have resulted in allowing many more pet owners to have their pets sterilized at a price they can afford. “When I hear ‘somebody should do something,’ it really bothers me,” said Jordan, who credits her knowledge to “years of having my own animals,”
fostering animals through PAWS of Michigan and “working shoulder to shoulder with veterinarian professionals for 10 years… It’s osmosis.” In PAWS’ “heyday,” Jordan said, staff averaged about 250 spay and neuter surgeries a week. Nowadays, mainly due to COVID, the clinic sees about 75 pets a week for surgery and about 40 pets weekly for vaccines, she said. “I expect to get back to the heyday soon,” she said. The 70,000 spayed and neutered animals and other efforts in favor of pets “makes me feel really proud,” Jordan said. “This started as a vision – as a dream – of a small group of us that really believed in spaying and neutering and didn’t know what we were doing when we started.” “People appreciate what we do and we are getting a ton of positive reviews on Facebook and Google. They’re glad we’re there and are making spaying and neutering accessible.” Jordan added: “I can’t say enough good things about our staff. We are a nonprofit, so we don’t pay as much as they might make working for a forprofit business. Each one works long physical hours. Our finance model is completely different from a for-profit. I can’t say enough about our doctors and support staff.” When an employee is hired, PAWS officials look for people who have the same vision: “We don’t want to hire people who are just looking for a job or love animals,” Jordan said. “We want people who believe in our mission.” “Everybody should spay and neuter their pets, even if they don’t come to us,” she said. “It’s important for controlling the animal population, but also disease; certain types of cancer. It’s good for curbing behaviors that cause people to turn their animals into shelters, like cats going into heat or male cats spraying.” Praise for Riverview Jordan said she appreciates the support PAWS has received from the city of Riverview and its officials, including former Mayor Tim Durand, who serves as president of the Board of SEE PAWS, Page 22

PAWS
Continued from page 22 Directors and “was a huge advocate of PAWS of Michigan from the beginning.” “We were regularly invited to bring adoptable animals to City Council meetings and, for several years, our major Paws in the Park fundraiser was held at Young Patriots Park in Riverview with Tim and Riverview council members serving as contest judges. Tim has been on The PAWS Clinic board since our inception and is in his second year as board president.” Durand, one of PAWS’ biggest promoters and supporters, says there’s plenty to like about the clinic. “I’m amazed every day at the dedication and care the entire crew provides to our four-legged friends,” he said. Jordan, a native of Chicago, said Riverview, its city officials and its residents include plenty of responsible pet owners. “I love Riverview, I really do,” she said. “I didn’t grow up here. I married into the Downriver area. When I’m driving home, I enjoy passing by the Memorial Day flags at Young Patriots Park and the involvement of the citizens in the community. Our leadership is great. I feel safe here. I feel part of the community. I’ve been here 35 years now. I really adore it.” Praise for PAWS The significance of PAWS to pets in the region is noticed. Wayne County Commissioner Raymond Basham recently presented a proclamation from the commission to Jordan and Chrissy Romano, the clinic’s director of operations. “It is with great admiration that the Wayne County Commission recognizes The PAWS Clinic of the city of Taylor for 11 years of dedicated service to improving the lives of animals in the Downriver area,” the proclamation begins. It goes on to recognize the clinic’s mission of decreasing animal homelessness and needless euthanasia, plus the fact that the nonprofit success in performing tens of thousands of spay and neuter surgeries since incorporating as a nonprofit organization. The Board of Directors of the clinic also nominated Jordan for an “unsung hero” award in the Women of Achievement recognition sponsored by the Southern Wayne County Regional Chamber. “Kris’ dedication to our four-legged friends is evident in her commitment to the clinic,” the nomination states. “She generally works 40 hours a week and she has worked without compensation since the inception of the clinic. The board of directors has looked for ways to reward her, but she refuses compensation and says she is rewarded every day she can make a difference in the world of pets. Kris does not look for praise, thanks or acknowledgement.” The Latest Services Although The PAWS Clinic’s mission and primary focus remains on providing affordable spay and neuter services for dogs and cats, the group has launched an animal vaccine clinic to meet the needs of many people, including those who brought new pets into their homes during the pandemic. “Keeping pets up-to-date on vaccines is an important step in keeping a furry family member healthy, as vaccines provide protection against common serious, and sometimes fatal, diseases in dogs and cats,” Jordan said. “The PAWS Clinic offers rabies, distemper, Bordetella and leptospirosis vaccines for dogs and rabies and distemper vaccines for cats. “Heartworm testing/preventiON is also available at the clinic. Heartworm is spread by infected mosquitoes and is common in our area. Fortunately, this serious disease is easily avoided with a monthly dose of heartworm preventative. The PAWS Clinic urges owners of every dog over six months of age to make sure their dog has his or her annual heartworm test. Both puppies and adult dogs should be taking regular heartworm preventative.” In addition, Jordan said, pet owners can purchase flea and tick prevention, have an intestinal parasite check done on their pets and purchase deworming medication at PAWS’ weekly vaccine clinics. Microchips are also available for dogs and cats. Appointments are required. Interested pet owners can call PAWS at (313) 4518200 to set up an appointment for the following week. Further information on scheduling an appointment can be found on the website www.thepawsclinic.com.
Estate Planning 101 Which plan do you need? Time to clear up the confusion about Estate Planning ... The following definitions lack legal precision, but makes it easier to get a clear picture of what may be needed in your case. ■ Will – letter of intent of where you want your personal property to go – or not go. ■ Living Will – Documents your wishes during your final days including final healthcare choices and possibly your burial wishes. ■ Trust – This is a “company” that you start, and you become the CEO, “Trustee” and “Settlor.” The company outlives you, but continues to manage your assets as if you were alive by the successor CEO – whom you designate. ■ Power of Attorney – Financial and Healthcare – you need both – the first so someone can pay your bills, the second, sometimes called a Patient Advocate, designates someone to make “hallway at the hospital” decisions to take the stress off the family. ■ Ladybird Deed – probably the best thing that has happened to owning a home. I love these deeds – you grant yourself a life estate – in your own property - but retain the power to sell or borrow against the property. If you do not sell before you pass, this “springs” the house out of your estate, and your heirs have instant ownership, subject to any mortgage or taxes owed or similar. Again, this is just a general description of the more popular terms – no one choice is a “silver bullet” but depending on how your estate gets planned out you can expedite a clean and clear process for the assets you worked a lifetime to save. Why wouldn’t you want to do that? Stop by or call and make an appointment and I’ll tell you what you’re going to need to do this right. To my numerous former clients – thank you for allowing me to draft your estate plan!

Still Cruisin’
Now an orphan with no official sponsor and no sanction from any Downriver cities, the Downriver Cruise rolls on year after year and 2021 was no different. On the last Saturday in June - this year June 26 - the classic cars hit Fort Street in Lincoln Park, Southgate, Riverview and Wyandotte and the crowds were there to greet them and enjoy the day despite the constant threat of rain and thundershowers. The rain held off, the cars did their part and the event was enjoyed by the thousands who lined the street
