Wyandotte students will begin the school year with online learning only, and transition to face-to-face classroom instruction when and if it becomes safe to do so in light of the covid-19 pandemic.

The Board of Education and Supt. Catherine Cost published an Aug. 12 letter (https:// www.wyandotte.org/covid-19information) about the decision, which was based on guidance from local health, state and federal agencies as well as input from parents and staff.

Soroptimists raise funds for First Step organization Paula Neuman Wyandotte Warrior

The coronavirus lockdown has created a nightmare for people in abusive relationships, and shelters for victims of domestic violence are more in need than ever for resources and donations.

“The cases of domestic violence are increasing as a result of people being forced to be in abusive situations with no relief,” said Janelle Rose, co-owner of the Willow Tree in Wyandotte and a member of Soroptimist International of Trenton Area, a service group to advance the status of women and girls.

The women in the 50-member club — which officially represents Grosse Ile, Riverview, Trenton, Gibraltar, Woodhaven and Brownstown, and has members from those communities and also Wyandotte, Southgate, Rockwood, Allen Park, Lincoln Park, Monroe, Flat Rock and other cities — wanted to help First Step in this trying time.

First Step is a nonprofit domestic violence aid society in Wayne County that offers shelter and resources to women and children in need of help.

The nonprofit reports worsening and more lethal violence because of the coronavirus lockdown and waning economy, and also a reduced capacity to take in families in need as shelters guard against virus spread by keeping people separated.

The local Soroptimists also had to cancel some of their “normal” programs and fundraisers that might have helped.

“So Abby Premoe, our new president, came up with the idea for a bottle and can drive,” Rose said. “It seemed to be a good way to help people get rid of the cans that were piling up due to recycle and bottle returns being closed, and to make some money for First Step.”

The women went to work.

They posted about the effort on social media and on the club’s Facebook page.

Soroptimist Ann Peraino of Grosse Ile collected many bottles and cans for the effort even while being 8 1/2 months pregnant. One drop-off site for the cans and bottles was Premoe’s business, Instinct Salon in Flat Rock.

response was so great that they quickly ran out of space. The collection effort was led by Soroptimist Catherine Infantado of Lincoln Park, who said she spent five straight days collecting bottles.

Soroptimist Veronica Drakos of Woodhaven took charge of returning the bottles. But first she had to find a place to store them until businesses could accept returns. She contacted Catherine

Tiefer.

“A past member, Catherine offered the use of one of her storage buildings on her farm,” Rose said. “We filled that and were able to hold them until bottle return stations were open again.”

Bags and bags of bottles and cans were transferred to Tiefer’s South Rockwood home. Then once business bottle returns opened up, the women had to cash in the thousands and thousands of cans and bottles from their collection effort.

“A heartfelt thanks goes out to the team of Tessa and Doug Smith, who cashed in empties,” Drakos said.

The bottle drive raised about $2,500, and Tiefer matched that. On Aug 18, the Soroptimists presented a check for $5,000 to First Step.

“This couldn’t have been possible without an awesome group of volunteers that gave their time to give to women who need our help,” Drakos said.

That effort is just one of the club’s many charitable endeavors.

“We do many other smaller projects like Christ Net, Hope in a Handbag, and a Virtual Family Run,” Rose said.

“There are other efforts we’ll consider resuming after we ‘normalize’ post covid-19. One is a project to fund a Water Box, which provides clean water to communities that need it in situations like Flint. We award scholarships to women that are seeking education, are the heads of households, etc. These scholarships are awarded on an annual basis.

“So many good projects, efforts, ideas — always being shared, and we get to socialize and learn things about ourselves during our monthly dinner meetings.”

The club holds a business meeting on the second Tuesday of the month, and meets on the fourth Tuesday at Truago in Trenton for a dinner and speaker presentations. No meetings take place in July or August.

“Our specific group includes seasoned veterans of over 35 years and newbies that have just joined,” Rose said. “We have members from all walks of life, women in their 70s and beyond and others that are 20-something — and everything in between.

“The common thread is that we care about making a difference in the lives of women.”

Russ Dunsky has been ‘Elvis’ for nearly 50 years Dave Gorgon

Forty-three years after the passing of Elvis Presley, his memory lives on through Elvis tribute artist Russ Dunsky, who has been impersonating “the King of Rock and Roll” for nearly 50 years.

Dunsky, a native of Oklahoma who lives in Wyandotte, has performed as Elvis since he was a junior high school student in Garden City.

“I’ve liked his music ever since I was a kid,” Dunsky said. “When I was 13 years old, I sang ‘Love Me Tender’ to a girl. She and her stepdad said I sounded like Elvis. In two days, it got through the school that I sounded like Elvis and everybody asked me to sing songs for them. I started performing in the gym and it got bigger and bigger.”

In high school, Dunsky said, he combed his hair like Elvis and friends tagged him with the nickname “Elvis,” which has lasted a lifetime.

Dunsky loved the “heart and soul” Elvis put into his music, but said he was also attracted to how Presley treated others.

“I always liked his music and the way he carried himself – his charisma, how he treated people,” Dunsky said. “He would give cars, jewelry, you name it to strangers. There was even a gal in Detroit in 1976 who told him ‘I like your Cadillac.’ He asked if she wanted one. She told him she couldn’t afford one. Elvis said, ‘I’ll take care of it’ and he bought her a car. He was that type of person.”

When Dunsky served in the Army from 1977 to 1980, he performed in shows at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. When he was on duty, he refilled helicopters. When he was home on leave on Aug. 16, 1977,

learned about his hero’s death.

“It was on a Tuesday afternoon,” he said. “I was in the living room of my mom’s house at the time. My mom was talking to a friend who told her to turn on the TV. I froze. I couldn’t move for five minutes.

I was in shock.

Elvis’ popularity has never died and Dunsky has performed tribute shows ever since.

Dunsky describes his tribute as “early to mid-1970s Elvis.”

His shows include many of the classics, such as “My Way,” “Suspicious Minds,” “You Gave Me a Mountain” and “Can’t Help Falling in Love.”

He has performed all over Michigan in halls for charity events, birthday parties and weddings as well as classic car shows, among others.

After Elvis’ passing, Dunsky said he started putting even “more feeling” into the music he sang. He performed such

moving and gospel songs such as “I Believe,” “How Great Thou Art,” “You’ll Never Walk Alone” and “Impossible Dream.”

One thing that attracted Margaret, his wife of 25 years, to Dunsky was his ability to perform like Elvis. The first song he sang to her was the Johnny Rivers classic “Baby, I Need Your Loving” was the night they met at Barney’s Bar in Wyandotte.

A participant at the Michigan Elvisfest in Ypsilanti, Dunsky said he has twice visited Elvis’ famous home, Graceland, in Memphis, Tenn.

One highlight of his career was appearing in a special publication in 2003 commemorating the 10-year anniversary of the Woodward Dream Cruise. Alongside Dunsky in a photo was his then-6-year-old son James, who has been impersonating Elvis since he was 3.

The two were standing in front of Dunsky’s 1969 Lincoln Mark III, the vehicle Elvis drove in the 1970 movie “Elvis: That’s the Way It Is.” At age 61, Dunsky is retired from Hertz at Detroit Metropolitan Airport.

“I managed to do more shows because I had more time on my hands,” he said.

Then the COVID-19 global pandemic hit, which “put the kibosh on everything.” His last show was at a birthday party in January at Cavill’s in Taylor. He’s using his time off to recuperate from an aching back.

The coronavirus has also caused the cancellation of a number of classic car shows and cruises, although Dunsky said he goes whenever possible, taking his 2006 Ford Mustang with the license plate “ELVIS D” and decked out with Elvis memorabilia.

He also owns a 1976 Ford Thunderbird. Elvis Presley owned one of those, too.

What in the world is a crumb cake, I wondered, when I came across a recipe for Blueberry Crumb Cake. I immediately visited Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia that has the answer to everything, and learned that crumb cake is a German specialty called Streuselkuchen, often served for breakfast. Well known in New York and other eastern states, it has a streusel topping comprising one-half to three-fourths of the cake and is often made with apples or other berries. Because the batter is very thick, I found it’s best to use a stand mixer to mix it. With Michigan blueberries now in season, it would be unthinkable to make it with any other fruit.

And speaking of blueberries, you may want to try the recipe for Blueberry Bran Muffins, my newest favorite muffin. Orange juice and orange rind add flavor to another delicious breakfast treat.

BLUEBERRY CRUMB CAKE Streusel topping: 1 cup all-purpose flour ½ cup packed light brown sugar ¼ teaspoon salt ½ cup (1 stick ) cold unsalted butter, cut into tablespoons In a medium bowl, mix the flour, sugar and salt. Using your fingers, work in the butter until large, moist crumbs form. (Make sure the crumbs are large so they will form a crisp topping as the cake bakes instead of melting into the batter. Chill the streusel until ready to use.

Batter: 1½ cups all-purpose flour, plus 1 teaspoon for blueberries 1½ teaspoons baking powder ½ teaspoon baking soda ¼ teaspoon salt ¼ teaspoon allspice 4 tablespoons unsalted butter at room temperature (see note) ¾ cup sugar 1 large egg ¼ cup buttermilk 1½ cups blueberries, picked over, rinsed and patted dry Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Butter and flour, or spray with baking spray, a 9-inch square baking pan. In a medium bowl, whisk together the 1½ cups flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt and allspice; set aside. In another bowl,

cream the butter and sugar, preferably with an electric stand mixer, until light and fluffy. Add the egg and beat until combined.

Add the flour mixture and buttermilk in alternating batches, beginning and ending with the flour. Beat until just combined (the batter will be very stiff).

In a small bowl, toss the blueberries with the remaining teaspoon flour. Fold the berries into the batter and pour into the prepared pan. Sprinkle evenly with the streusel topping, covering the batter completely (do not press in). Bake until golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean, 45 to 50 minutes. Let cool completely before cutting.

(Note: To quickly soften butter if necessary, grate it using the large holes of a box grater or cut the butter into 1/4-inch slices.)

BLUEBERRY BRAN MUFFINS 1½ cups all-purpose flour 2½ teaspoons baking powder ¼ teaspoon baking soda 1/4 teaspoon salt 1½ cups All-Bran cereal ¾ cup 2% milk ½ cup orange juice 2 large eggs ¼ cup vegetable oil ¾ cup packed brown sugar 1 cup fresh (or frozen, unthawed) blueberries 1 tablespoon grated orange rind, if desired.

Set oven at 375 degrees. In a medium-sized bowl, mix together flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt.

Set aside. In a large bowl, stir together cereal, milk and orange juice. Let stand for 5 minutes, or until cereal softens.

Meanwhile, grate orange rind, if using, and lightly grease or spray 12 to 18 muffin cups, depending on size, or line with paper muffin cups.

Add eggs, oil and brown sugar to cereal mixture, combining well. (I used an electric mixer for about 15 seconds.)

Add flour mixture, stirring until just combined. Fold in blueberries and orange rind. Spoon into muffin cups, filling about ¾ full. Bake 20 to 25 minutes or until golden brown and a toothpick comes out clean, avoiding blueberries.

Students at home will be expected to log on during normal school hours, and — unlike the district’s online schooling in the spring— assignments this fall will count toward grades.

“The last five months have been more difficult than ever before,” the letter states.

“Families have made great sacrifices and we are asking all of you to support your children yet again.”

Across the state, schools are reopening in a variety of ways.

Some, such as Wyandotte, Allen Park and Southgate, are choosing not to offer in-person learning at all for September, and hoping to be able to open safely for more traditional face-to-face learning as the year progresses.

Other districts are offering full-time in-person learning this September, and some are offering a hybrid plan where students will spend a few days in the class each week and a few days of learning remotely.

But all districts are offering full-time online options, as well. In-person learning, where it’s available, comes with a number of restrictions to help ensure student and staff safety.

The state’s guidelines for school districts require the development of learning plans for six identified coronavirus phases.

Most of Michigan, including Downriver, is now in Phase 4, which allows in-person school with many restrictions for safety. Areas in Phases 1-3 are not allowed to open for faceto-face learning at all. Areas in Phases 5 and 6 can offer in-person schooling with fewer safety restrictions.

The science surrounding the

new coronavirus creating the pandemic is still emerging, but seems to show that children of all ages are susceptible to infection. Many — but not all — youngsters don’t seem to become seriously ill if they get covid-19, but they do transmit the virus as easily as adults, thus potentially infecting adult school staff and

Hygiene Soap, hand sanitizer (with at least 60 percent alcohol), paper towels and wipes will be available in adequate supplies to support healthy behaviors. Maintenance staff will daily check soap levels and paper towels in each restroom and classroom. They will also ensure hand sanitizer stations in commons areas, cafeterias and hallways are refilled daily.

Teachers will monitor the classroom supply of wipes and hand sanitizer, which will be distributed to schools from a central point. Teachers will contact the office immediately if supplies run out during the school day.

At the beginning of the year, teachers will teach and reinforce handwashing with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, as well as the proper use of hand sanitizer that contains at least 60 percent alcohol.

This will happen in individual classrooms prek-5/Center Programs or in specified hours for grades 6-12.

Students and staff will also be taught how to cough and sneeze into their elbows, or to cover with a tissue and dispose of in the trash.

Proper hand washing and sneezing will be communicated to families via newsletters, web pages, and social media.

Sharing school supplies will be limited and each student will have his/ her own supply of materials.

Cleaning District level maintenance administrators will meet with their staff to review all guidance related to cleaning and disinfecting of schools per the MI Safe Schools: Michigan’s 202021 Return to School Roadmap.

An inventory of all cleaning supplies that are in compliance with the EPAapproved related to COVID will be taken. New orders will be made to address the increased cleaning protocols.

Frequently touched surfaces (e.g., light switches, door knobs, dry erase markers ) will be wiped down daily with an EPA-approved disinfectant.

Libraries, computer labs, art and other hands-on classrooms will be wiped down after every class period with the same approved disinfectant.

This work will be done by maintenance staff, teacher and/or students. Student desks will be wiped down at the end of the day, preK-5th grade. For those classrooms, 6 - 12th grade, the desks will be wiped down after every class period. This will be done by teachers and/or students.

A training on cleaning materials and protocols will be provided to staff.

Playground structures will undergo normal routine cleaning, as it has been done in the past. Playground equipment (e.g., soccer balls, jump ropes, four square balls) will be wiped down after each recess period.

Disinfecting products will be stored as directed and securely stowed away from children.

Maintenance and teachers will ensure adequate ventilation when using these products.

Staff will be supplied with gloves,

masks and face shields for use when performing all cleaning activities.

Athletics The district’s athletic director has attended numerous webinars with the Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA). He in turn, has met with each coach and explained all the required actions. Our athletic trainer also oversees each athlete to complete an electronic questionnaire.

WPS will comply with all guidance published by MHSAA. Coaches and students confirm each day they are healthy and symptom free. The athletic trainer oversees this process and collects the data.

Equipment is disinfected by coaches after each use. Our third party bus contractor, Trinity, will clean and disinfect the buses before and after each use.

Spectators are allowed provided

This will, in turn, be shared with the District. Administrators and district nurses will cooperate to implement the protocols for screening students and staff.

Those students and staff that develop symptoms will be provided a mask, if they aren’t already wearing one and sent for medical care or sent home.

Each school will identify a remote or secluded area to serve as an isolation area. A log sheet will be maintained until the student is safely picked up from the school. Parents will be informed with clear directions on where and how to pick up the student.

Symptomatic students and staff that are sent home will remain home until they have tested negative for COVID-19 or have been released from isolation.

The District will communicate to parents/guardians that they are encouraged to check students’ temperatures at home every morning.

Any students with a temperature above 100.4 must stay home. All staff will be required to conduct a health safety assessment each day and complete a Google form that verifies they are safe to work.

Testing WPS will cooperate with the Wayne County Health Department if a confirmed case of COVID-19 is identified. The administrators and teachers will use contact information to determine other individuals who have had close contact with the affected individual from two days before she/he showed symptoms until the time when she/he was last present at the school.

The District will maintain confidentiality consistent with the ADA Act and other applicable federal and state privacy laws.

Busing and Student Transportation Wyandotte does not provide busing for our general education students, but we do for those students who have transportation as part of their IEP’s. This is handled by a third party contractor, Trinity Transportation.

WPS will provide hand sanitizer for students to use prior to entering the bus. The students will be provided a mask, if they do not have one. Trinity Transportation will be responsible for providing masks for their staff, in addition to cleaning and disinfecting each vehicle before and after every run.

This will be done at their garage, so no children will be present.

Trinity will also clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces and equipment within each vehicle prior to morning and afternoon routes.

We will request signage be added to each bus to address the use of face coverings of all students and staff and the use of hand sanitizer. Weather permitting, windows and doors will be opened during the cleaning process in order to let the vehicle air out.

Similarly, the windows will be opened (whether permitting) while the vehicle is in motion in order to increase air circulation.

If a student becomes sick during the day, the school will contact a parent/ guardian to come and transport the student safely home. If a driver becomes sick, the driver will not return to drive students home and will notify his/her Trinity supervisor.

The Wyandotte Farmers Market follows all CDC guidelines and social distancing recommendations. Please wear your mask when entering the Farmers Market, for they are now mandatory in outdoor crowded areas. You will be asked to put your mask on if you enter the Market without one. Grosse Ile resident Patty Trevino said during the hearing that she grew up in Detroit by the Ambassador Bridge — also owned by the Moroun family — and has witnessed what happened to her former neighborhood.

“That company does what they want,” Trevino said. “We’re talking about a family worth a billion dollars.

I don’t know how you’re going to regulate that company. They can pay whatever fine you give them. Please look at the history.”

And other commenters suggested that a final decision on the zoning change should wait until an actual in-person hearing can take place without the current covid-19 restrictions on public gatherings.

“I’m of the opinion that this rezoning is being rushed in the midst of a pandemic,” said Ryan Stewart of Trenton, who added that many of the city’s senior citizens don’t have the ability to comment online.

Robert Johnson of Trenton said, “I see no rush to rezone it without more study and input. The testing for contamination is just about to begin.”

William Heil, president of the Grosse Ile Civic Association, also said the decision shouldn’t be rushed, especially because the Superfund assessment of hazards hasn’t yet begun.

Rzeppa said after the hearing: “The zoning ordinance updates began in 2016; it has not been a rushed process. In fact, most of us have argued that it has taken too long. This started before McLouth went into foreclosure and before Crown was even in the picture. We’d be having this conversation no matter who owned the site or even if it was sitting totally vacant.”

After the hearing, both outgoing Grosse Ile Supervisor Brian Loftus and Riverview Mayor Andrew Swift said that Trenton officials are

in a tough spot when it comes to somehow balancing the legalities of zoning, the city’s need for tax base and the loud and clear opposition of residents to the intermodal shipping port proposal.

“I wouldn’t want to trade places with them (Trenton officials),” Loftus said. “The big picture must include the fact that Trenton has lost a tremendous portion of its tax base with this site lying fallow and the city will lose even more when the DTE plant is shuttered. This redevelopment will certainly help with a financial recovery so that the city can continue to provide the services the residents expect. To attempt to deny the property owner a legitimate use of his property could become a form of condemnation and would be very expensive to take to court with little chance of prevailing.

“I can’t speak for the entire Board of Trustees, but I would negotiate with the developer to voluntarily add setbacks, berms, landscaping and buffers, which could be included in a zoning ordinance.”

Said Swift: “Action could be taken to reduce or eliminate the use of those unsightly storage containers. But we’d also consider that the Moroun businesses have a reputation Downriver. We all know that the likelihood of litigation would occur. It would cost the city millions of dollars and years of lost opportunity to oppose the redevelopment. We would do what we can to maybe not change the course of development but influence and reduce the environmental impact while improving the financial stability of the city.”

Stephanie Tucker of Riverview, commenting during the hearing, urged residents to contact their members of Congress and get them involved.

“It’s going to take all of us to galvanize and keep this from happening,” she said.

Trenton resident Jennifer Knight had this message for city officials during the hearing: “This will be your legacy.”

Is evil winning? No, take a closer look

As a mom and pastor, you pay attention when your son says, “Mom, let’s face it. The world is an evil place. There’s not much good in it anymore.”

Hearing those words come out of my cheerful, normally optimistic son’s mouth was a gut punch. It took me a moment to respond, but I said, “Good is always stronger than evil; evil just gets more press.”

The old adage in journalism used to be (and perhaps it still is): “If it bleeds, it leads.” Watch any news broadcast and the first stories are always the worst. Why? To get more viewers so that the station can raise advertising rates. It shows us a disproportionate view of the world around us.

I challenged the kids to look for the good things that happen every day to see if they could prove or disprove my hypothesis that evil just gets better press. And, I decided to try it, as well (to make sure that I’m right).

In the last week, this is what I saw: Two fawns playing together while their mom watched with a look on her face that said, “Keep it up, and someone is going to end up crying.”

A dad “racing” his toddler on the bike path. The look of pure joy on her face made me smile. The Dad’s face,

however, took my breath away… the look of joy and love on his face radiated like a bright light in the darkest night. ·A teenager who walked over to throw his slushee cup away at the gas station, even though he could have left it on the ground next to his bike.

It’s not always easy, though, to see the good.

I found a bag on the church property this week. I opened it up, and it was full of trash. I admit, my first thought was, “Really?? Come on, people.”

However, I was practicing my sermon at the same time, so I thought, “What’s the good in this?” It took me a minute, but then I realized: the trash was all contained in the bag. None of it had blown out, which made clean up super easy.

Bad stuff happens, it’s true.

However, there is always good to be found when we look for it.

What good are you seeing these days?

If we’re looking for stories and experiences of how awful the world is, there are more than enough to confirm our belief. However, if we’re looking for stories and experiences of how wonderful the world is, we’ll find even more.

I encourage you to spend a week of being intentional about looking for the good things that surround you.

AAUW Wyandotte-Downriver branch awards 2020 scholarships The annual scholarships offered by the Wyandotte-Downriver branch of the American Association of University Women were awarded, despite their annual spring celebration and awards ceremony being cancelled due to the pandemic.

A total of five scholarships were presented to applicants who met the requirements set forth by the Edmonds Scholarship Committee of the local AAUW organization. n The recipient of the Kathleen Bain Scholarship at Wyandotte Roosevelt High School in the amount of $2000.00 was awarded to Julia Edmonds from Wyandotte, who plans to attend Oakland University to study Nursing. n The recipient of the Lawrence Tech University Scholarship in the amount Downs of $2500.00 was awarded to Alyssa Downs, from Southgate. Alyssa is studying Civil Engineering. n The recipient of the Baker College scholarship in the amount of $2500.00 was awarded to Kayleigh Benson, a student from New Boston studying

Business Administration.

The two recipients of the Henry Ford College scholarships in the amounts of $1250.00 each were Heather Rossi, a former EMT from Trenton who is working toward getting her MSW degree, and Daneisha Jones from Lincoln Park who is a Business Administration major.

MHSAA moves high school football to the spring

The Representative Council of the Michigan High School Athletic Association announced earlier this month that it will move the 2020 Fall football season to Spring 2021, due to football’s higher risk for spreading COVID-19.

The football season switch was made based on consultation with state health department officials and after surveying MHSAA member high schools on their progress and preferences after the first four days of practice.

Football is considered a highrisk sport for potential spread of the COVID-19 virus because of its level of player-to-player contact.

A total of 34,219 student-athletes played football at MHSAA member schools during the 2019 season. A total of 520 11-player teams and 83 8-player teams were anticipated during late summer to play football this fall season.

“At the end of the day, we did everything we could to find a path forward for football this fall,” MHSAA Executive Director Mark Uyl said.

“But while continuing to connect with the Governor’s office, state health department officials, our member schools’ personnel and the Council, there is just too much uncertainty and too many unknowns to play football this

fall.

“No one is willing to take the risk of COVID being passed on because of a high-risk sport. Decisions have to be made on our other sports as well, but none of those carry the same close, consistent, and face-to-face contact as football.”

Details for the spring football season including a specific schedule and format will be announced over the next few months. The MHSAA will be working to limit overlap of spring football and the traditional Spring sport seasons.

“While this is tremendously disappointing, we will do everything possible to provide the best possible experience in the spring while adding football into the calendar,” Uyl said.

Beginning on Aug. 24, out-of-season football is allowed 16 voluntary coachplayer contact days (with more than four players) with helmets only until Oct. 31.

Consistent with the Representative Council’s decision last week to move the football season from fall to spring, no competition or practice with students from other schools is allowed on any of the 16 voluntary coach-player contact days and this allowance is for practice sessions on-site at school facilities if the school permits with all stated safety protocols being followed and all activity taking place outdoors.

The four-player rule resumes on Nov. 1 for football. The MHSAA has heard from numerous schools and individuals about the need for students to stay connected with school coaches for a variety of wellness and mental health reasons. This allowance for football seeks to address that concern.

The Council also reaffirmed that MHSAA Handbook, Regulation II, Sections 9-11 limits a student to only one football season in a school year. For example, if a student participates in fall football in a different state, that student would be ineligible for a second football season in the spring in Michigan even if an exception to the transfer rule were met.

Other sports Volleyball and soccer are considered moderate-risk for virus spread, while cross country, golf, tennis and swimming & diving are considered low-risk.

All of these sports will be able to begin their season on time in the northern lower peninsula and the upper peninsula, however rules are different in the middle and southern part of the state.

In those areas, cross country, golf and tennis may proceed as normal and volleyball and Swimming & diving

may continue to practice outdoors, but head-to-head competition may not begin until the MHSAA get further guidance from the Governor’s office. Local swimming teams and volleyball teams may travel north, however, and compete in events in areas that currently allow competition.

Sideline cheer activities (practices and cheering for fall contests) are allowed until the preseason downtime for competitive cheer begins on Oct. 25.

Sideline cheer activities must follow the protocol of using face-coverings, physical distancing and no stunting which keeps this activity in the low-risk group. This activity must take place outdoors, subject to current and future Executive Orders.

The MHSAA is a private, notfor-profit corporation of voluntary membership by more than 1,500 public and private senior high schools and junior high/middle schools which exists to develop common rules for athletic eligibility and competition. No government funds or tax dollars support the MHSAA, which was the first such association nationally to not accept membership dues or tournament entry fees from schools. Member schools which enforce these rules are permitted to participate in MHSAA tournaments, which attract more than 1.4 million spectators each year.
