Fishing derby a hit with local youth
On June 1st, Skip Clack’s annual fishing derby once again captivated local youth, drawing a significant number of participants to Bishop Park Fishing Pier. The event featured categories like longest fish, smallest fish, most fish caught, and most unusual item caught, with judging by local experts. Each child received a gift bag with coupons and gift certificates from community merchants, including movie passes and restaurant discounts. This fun-filled summer tradition put on by the Wyandotte Special Events Office provided free admission for all children, fostering a memorable day of outdoor enjoyment.

Estate Planning 101 Which plan do you need?
Time to clear up the confusion about Estate Planning ... The following definitions lack legal precision, but makes it easier to get a clear picture of what may be needed in your case.
■ Will – letter of intent of where you want your personal property to go – or not go.
■ Living Will – Documents your wishes during your final days including final healthcare choices and possibly your burial wishes.
■ Trust – This is a “company” that you start, and you become the CEO, “Trustee” and “Settlor.” The company outlives you, but continues to manage your assets as if you were alive by the successor CEO – whom you designate.
■ Power of Attorney – Financial and Healthcare – you need both – the first so someone can pay your bills, the second, sometimes called a Patient Advocate, designates someone to make “hallway at the hospital” decisions to take the stress off the family.
■ Ladybird Deed – probably the best thing that has happened to owning a home. I love these deeds – you grant yourself a life estate – in your own property - but retain the power to sell or borrow against the property. If you do not sell before you pass, this “springs” the house out of your estate, and your heirs have instant ownership, subject to any mortgage or taxes owed or similar.
Again, this is just a general description of the more popular terms – no one choice is a “silver bullet” but depending on how your estate gets planned out you can expedite a clean and clear process for the assets you worked a lifetime to save. Why wouldn’t you want to do that? Stop by or call and make an appointment and I’ll tell you what you’re going to need to do this right.
To my numerous former clients – thank you for allowing me to draft your estate plan!

Roosevelt tennis team qualifies for state finals
In a competitive Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 2 tennis regional hosted by Wyandotte Roosevelt, the host Bears put together enough wins to score 18 points, finishing second to regional champ Gibraltar Carlson, and qualifying for the state finals in Grand Rapids.
Carlson won the regional with 24 points and Roosevelt finished just a single point ahead of third place Anderson, which had 17. Allen Park was fourth with 14 and Trenton was fifth with 12.
The run to the state-meet berth was keyed by Roosevelt’s top two singles player, who won individual regional championships.
At No 1 singles, Roosevelt Jackie Maurino, the No. 3 seed, won three matches and was crowned the tournament’s “Top Gun.” Maurino beat Bella Chiles of Gabriel Richard and Carly Belcher of Southgate to reach the No. 1 finals.
There, Maurino finished the day by beating the No. 1 seed, Adyson Brake of Carlson 6-2, 7-5.
At No. 2 singles, Wyandotte’s Ava Ball won three matches and the No. 2 singles championship. She beat Aya Soweidan of Crestwood and Chelsea Haskins of Allen Park to reach the flight finals. In the finals, Ball beat Carlson’s Erin Riley, 6-0, 6-4.
Roosevelt’s No. 1 doubles team of Emily Glatz and Mia Spiteri reached the semifinals before falling, and the No. 3 and 4 doubles teams of Adrianna Padron and Maddie Pemberton and Ella Keathley and Kallie Blackwell, respectively, also reached the semifinals.
At the state finals, Roosevelt scored two points as Keathley and Blackwell won two matches and reached the round of three before bowing out.
BASEBALL TEAM FALLS IN DISTRICT OPENER
The Roosevelt baseball team had hoped to put its 11-win season in the rearview mirror with a little run in the state playoffs this season, but things did not turn out that way.
Playing in an all-Downriver League district at Woodhaven High School, Roosevelt lost its district semifinal to Carlson.
Carlson was then edged 3-2 in eight innings by Woodhavcen in the district championship game.
Wyandotte was Allen Park’s very first victim.
Playing in a district hosted by the Jaguars, the Bears fell 13-0 in six innings to the Downriver League powerhouse. The loss left the Bears with a 16-11 final record.
After beating the Bears in a district semifinal game, AP throttled Taylor 17-0 in the district finals. Taylor had clobbered Lincoln Park 15-0 in its district semifinals.
It was more of the same in the regionals as the Jags hammered Edsel Ford 19-0 and Woodhaven 13-4 before losing 3-0 to Farmington Hills Mercy 3-0 in the D1 state quarterfinals.
SOCCER TEAM FALLS AT DISTRICT LEVEL
The Roosevelt soccer team hosted an MHSAA Division 1 girls soccer district at the end of May. They won one game before seeing their season end 8-0 by eventual district champion Grosse Pointe South.
The Bears beat Lincoln Park 4-0 in a first round game, but could not hang with GPS. After beating Roosevelt, the Blue Devils beat Fordson 3-0 for the district crown. South then beat Dearborn 5-1 before losing 3-0 to regional champion Salem. Salem lost to Rochester Adams in the state semifinals and Adams went on to win the 2024 state crown.
Carlson beat another Downriver League team, Edsel Ford, 6-4 in the regional semifinal before yet another league team — Allen Park – beat the Warriors 9-1. The Jags then lost to Brother Rice in the state semifinals and Rice wound up losing 2-1 to Northville in the state championship game.
BEAR SOFTBALLERS SQUASHED BY ALLEN PARK
The Allen Park softball team has become something of a juggernaut and the Jaguars were all that through the district and regional rounds of the recently concluded state playoffs.
Allen Park never scored fewer than 13 runs in four district and regional games and never won by fewer than nine runs.
ROOSEVELT IS EIGHTH AT GOLF REGIONAL
The Roosevelt golf team hosted an MHSAA Division 1 regional tournament at Lakes of Taylor on May 28th and they finished eighth in the 16-team tournament with a score of 347.
Warren De La Salle won the tourney with a 302, U-D Jesuit was second with 317, and Carlson was third with 322. The top three teams in each regional qualify for the state meet.
All five players for Roosevelt at the regional were seniors. Leading the way was Dom Bozynski with an 81, Jacob Mills shot 85, Robert Turkowski shot 88, Jack Murray shot 93, and Oscar Burns shot 107. At the state finals, De La Salle finished fifth, U-D was 13th, and Carlson was 17th.
BEARS FINISH UP 2024 TRACK SEASON
The Roosevelt boys track team scored four points and tied for 13th at the MHSAA D1 regionals, while the girls scored 27 points and finished eighth.
Ania Toboy and Katherine Fugon-Saravia each qualified for the state meet in the discus. Toboy threw the disc 123-feet, 11-inches and finished third. Fugon-Saravia finished fourth, but her throw of 116-9 eclipsed the additional qualifying distance.
The lone state-meet qualifier for the boys was Alex Emory, whose 6-2 high jump was good enough to earn a place in the state finals.
At the finals Roosevelt scored one point and it came from Toboy’s personal-best throw of 132-11, which took eighth place. Allen Park’s Abigail Russell, who won the regional, also won the individual state title with a throw of 156-6.

Bruce Milkins named Grosse Ile Rotary Club’s 2024 Citizen of the Year
... For the past 50 years, Milkins has worked with several charitable organizations, such as the Goodfellows, the Salvation Army, and Ducks Unlimited, a wetlands and waterfowl conservation organization. However, the majority of his time is split between the Monroe Exchange Club and the Grosse Ile Rotary Club. In fact, during the late 1980s, he held the presidency for both clubs while also serving as the Commodore of the Grosse Ile Yacht Club in 1988.
Milkins has been involved in the Rotary Club’s global efforts to completely eradicate polio for the past 15 years. Long-time friend and fellow Rotarian, Doug Cryderman, highlighted many of Milkins’ additional acts of service, such as hosting a Rotary exchange student from Germany, housing Veterans, and working on numerous fundraisers. He then jokingly told the crowd to see him later for the “short list” of the honoree’s accomplishments and involvement. Milkins has made significant efforts in facilitating donations for local scholarships and diaper drives, supplying artwork materials to
Grosse Ile Schools, and participating in numerous community events. John Burgan, Co-President of the Grosse Ile Rotary Club, also shared a story about Milkins, who, as recently as last week, donated his old Harley Davidson for the upcoming motorcycle ride without hesitation.
Bruce Milkins is especially well-known for giving boat rides to disabled and handicapped children, along with their families, aboard his tug boat, the Duck Factory. His most recent excursion took children out on the Detroit River to witness April’s solar eclipse, creating quite the memorable experience for all involved. Milkins emphasized that the success of these rides wouldn’t have been possible without the support of the Grosse Ile Yacht Club, who have provided transportation, lunch, and entertainment, like music and games, for the children...

Team Rubicon to the rescue Disaster training event is a huge success
On the last weekend of April, the Grosse Ile Nature and Land Conservancy partnered with the Township Greenways/Open Space Committee in hosting the Team Rubicon “Chainsaw Proficiency Project,” which turned out to be a win-win-win for all concerned. Conservancy properties and Open
Space preserves provided plenty of disaster training experiences for the group known throughout the United States as local disaster relief specialists, who assist FEMA when nature’s chaos hits.
Gary Gamble, Southeast Michigan Team Rubicon leader, emphasized the importance of their mission: “As storms, wildfires, diseases, and conflict wreak havoc, it’s the local communities that need us most. With our global connections and our Team Rubicon Greyshirts already part of neighborhoods around the world, our people can make the most impact, closest to home.”...

Restored
The Roosevelt High School Auditorium welcomed back its cherished murals, lovingly restored to their former glory. Created in the early 1940s by artists Henry Roberts and Walter Speck, five oil on canvas
masterpieces had weathered the passage of time, showing signs of wear and tear. But with restoration efforts from the RHS Mural Restoration Committee, conservators, donors, and all who made this restoration possible, the community eagerly anticipated the grand unveiling. On May 12th, supporters gathered for a celebratory ceremony, witnessing the resurrection of these historic artworks.

Anderson High School students take over city hall
On Wednesday, May 15th, students from Anderson High School stepped into the shoes of Southgate government officials for Student Government Day. This annual event offers a unique opportunity for young people to experience the inner workings of municipal government, fostering a deeper understanding of civic duties and responsibilities. The day began with breakfast at the Southwinds Golf Course Clubhouse, where students and city officials gathered for an informal meet-and-greet. Following breakfast, City Clerk Jan Ferencz administered the Oath of Office to the honorary officials, officially instating them in their roles for
the day.
Participants then embarked on a comprehensive tour of the municipal campus, including the Police Department, District Court, and Fire Station. These tours provided students with an inside look at the essential services that keep the city safe and operational.
After the morning tours, everyone returned to the clubhouse for lunch. During this time, the honorary officials had the chance to sit with their real-life counterparts and discuss their roles and responsibilities...

Southgate alumni skaters make new memories
... Memories came flooding back as skaters converged for the 3rd Annual Southgate Hockey Alumni Game on May 18th. A mix of graduates from four Southgate High Schools (Anderson, Aquinas, Schafer and Southgate) teamed up with former youth players in the Southgate Hockey Association.
“As long as we keep playing, reminiscing and hanging out, the memories of our awesome youth days in Southgate, along with the greatest game, will keep us forever young,” David Blanton, a Southgate Hockey youth player and Trenton High
School ‘87 graduate.
While many skaters still live in the Downriver area, David Blanton flew in from Georgia to play in his second game. Said Blanton, “Already looking forward to next year!” Added Dan Drys, Anderson ’86, playing in his third game, “Gets better every year...
