Zombie Pub Crawl back for seventh glorious year The Wyandotte Zombie Pub Crawl returns for its seventh year on Saturday, Oct. 16th. The Wyandotte Zombie Pub Crawl is a crowdfundraising event unlike anything else in the area. It brings hundreds of people together every October who have purchased tickets to participate in Southeastern Michigan’s largest zombie pub crawl in beautiful downtown Wyandotte. In turn, the event organizers, Be Well My Friends a 501(c)(3), give the net proceeds to people and organizations of the Downriver that need assistance. In its first six years, the event, was able to give over $62,000 to the “Yes, Ma’am” program, which bi-annually provides breast screenings and free mammograms to under-insured women in the Downriver area at the Henry Ford Wyandotte Hospital. The Yes Ma’am program is headed by Dr. Wolf from the Center for Women’s and Children’s Health

and Well Being. This year’s fundraiser is co-hosted by two nonprofits, Be Well My Friends and the Downriver Council for the Arts. The event’s proceeds will be distributed to the “Yes, Ma’am” program at the Wyandotte Henry Ford Hospital, Downriver Council for the Arts, Penrickton Center for the Blind, and Downriver Foster Closet. The event begins at 4 p.m. with zombies receiving wristbands graciously donated by White Furniture at check-in at the Downriver Council for the Arts, which is located at 81 Chestnut. Zombies will then crawl to some of the best pubs in downtown Wyandotte where they will receive discounted drinks when they show their wristbands. Pub crawlers’ carcasses will be hauled around downtown Wyandotte on a ZomBus, which is generously provided by Trinity Transportation. While on the crawl, they can participate in a

scavenger hunt for a $300 cash prize. At 9:30 p.m. the zombie horde crawls back to the DCA for the Afterlife party at 81 Chestnut. There at the DCA, in the eerily decorated former Oddfellows ballroom, the Afterlife party will have live music from the band First Time Crush, costume contest with prizes, cash bar, raffles and door prizes. The Wyandotte Zombie Pub Crawl and Afterlife party concludes at 2 a.m. when the zombies again return to their graves to rest until the 8th Annual Wyandotte Zombie Pub Crawl in October of 2022. Tickets are currently on sale on Eventbrite: Wyandotte Zombie Pub Crawl Tickets on Eventbrite. Keep Michigan Beautiful speaks

Wyandotte’s Community Garden receives honors Hank Minckiewicz Wyandotte Warrior

The city of Wyandotte has a lot of things going for it - lots of local shops and restaurants, a vibrant downtown, the street fair - but there is a lesserknown gem that the city possesses, as well. The Wyandotte Community Garden, located in the Green Belt Park on the eastern portion of Grove Street, near Jefferson. It is a quiet, well-maintained green space filled with 36 raised beds that are filled with abundant, vibrant plants. Pre-COVID the garden was a social place, where garderers gathered to talk while they weeded and organized team clean-up days. The focus has shifted with the times and now the garden is more of a solitary, outdoor pursuit for gardeners. Currently the garden is in phase 1 of its growth. That is, the 36 raised beds placed on the ground through the site. The construction of phase 2 is well underway. The Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant act will have beds raised to wheelchair height as well as beds raised high enough for those who would like to garden, but have difficulty getting down to the ground and back up again. The site is being prepped. Water is already there and concrete has been poured creating a U-shaped walkway to provide access to both sides of the beds. While the garden may fly somewhat under the radar for a lot of Wyandotte residents, it is pretty well-known among those in the community gardening community and recently it received a pair of important awards from both the Keep Michigan Beautiful Foundation and KMB’s grant award arm. The Keep Michigan Beautiful Foundation was created in 1962 by Gov. John Swanson. It was later declared an official state organization to combat litter and promote beautification by Gov. George Romney. Today, KMB tries to reach every area of the state to carry out its goals. Among other things, it utilizes a

newsletter, speakers, the enthusiasm of its members and volunteers, its annual award program and well publicized “Clean Up Days” to convey its message. The KMB grant award carries with it a $500 monetary prize. The Wyandotte Community Garden was one of 12 entities to receive a grant. The other honor is the prestigious Michigan Plaque, which will be presented on Oct. 9 to John Darrin, President of the City of Wyandotte Beautification Commission. “It’s very gratifying to be recognized for beautification efforts on a state-wide level,” Darrin said. Darrin added that he was thrilled that the Wyandotte Community Garden was recognized and said the whole project could not have been pulled off without massive amounts of help “Projects like this take a total team effort,” he said. “I feel like the garden has became kind of a community

anchor and we could not have become what we have without help from all over.” Darrin said the Wyandotte DPS and Engineering departments have been especially critical to the growth and success of the Community Garden. Those city departments have helped with planning, development and construction of the garden. The water lines have been run by city workers, the concrete paths have been poured by them and the city even chipped in by building a 12X12 foot shed for storing gardening tools and with compost for the garden beds. “The DPS and Engineering departments have been amazing partners,” said Darrin, who is also President of the Beautification Council of Southeastern Michigan. Here is how the Wyandotte Community Garden was described in the group’s Keep Michigan Beautiful award application:

The City of Wyandotte’s Community Garden is respectfully submitted for consideration for a 2021 Keep Michigan Beautiful Foundation Grant Award. The Wyandotte Beautification Commission is responsible for planning and maintaining all community garden operations. Our community garden began modestly in 2008, with 12 4’ x 8’ raised garden beds. The community garden was located on a private lot adjacent to a party store owned by a local merchant, who donated use of his vacant property for this purpose. The community garden flourished at that site, growing to 26 beds. However, the property was sold, and the community garden was forced to relocate just six weeks before its planned opening in the spring of 2014. We did find another site on city-owned land in the Wyandotte Downtown Development District. The community garden opened on schedule in its new location in April, 2014. The community garden continued to flourish, and grew to a total of 34 raised beds. The community garden continued to engage local residents, including seniors who could walk to the site from their senior apartments or condos, and also provided food for local non-profit organizations to distribute. But in early 2019, as our luck would have it, the city found another use for this land the community garden occupied - namely, a parking lot. But, this time attention was given to finding a permanent home for the Wyandotte Community Garden. The community garden was relocated to an open site in the Green Belt Park in the south end of town close to the Detroit River waterfront, at the corner of Jefferson Avenue and Grove Street. Soil analysis at that site was performed some years prior for the construction of a new subdivision, so we knew that the base soil was good and not contaminated from industries that were previously located in the area. Time to clear up the confusion about Estate Planning ... The following definitions lack legal precision, but makes it easier to get a clear picture of what may be needed in your case. ■ Will – letter of intent of where you want your personal property to go – or not go. ■ Living Will – Documents your wishes during your final days including final healthcare choices and possibly your burial wishes. ■ Trust – This is a “company” that you start, and you become the CEO, “Trustee” and “Settlor.” The company outlives you, but continues to manage your assets as if you were alive by the successor CEO – whom you designate. ■ Power of Attorney – Financial and Healthcare – you need both – the first so someone can pay your bills, the second, sometimes called a Patient Advocate, designates someone to make “hallway at the hospital” decisions to take the stress off the family. ■ Ladybird Deed – probably the best thing that has happened to owning a home. I love these deeds – you grant yourself a life estate – in your own property - but retain the power to sell or borrow against the property. If you do not sell before you pass, this “springs” the house out of your estate, and your heirs have instant ownership, subject to any mortgage or taxes owed or similar. Again, this is just a general description of the more popular terms – no one choice is a “silver bullet” but depending on how your estate gets planned out you can expedite a clean and clear process for the assets you worked a lifetime to save. Why wouldn’t you want to do that? Stop by or call and make an appointment and I’ll tell you what you’re going to need to do this right. To my numerous former clients – thank you for allowing me to draft your estate plan!

GARDEN

our ground-level raised beds.

Continued from page 5 again focused its energies on opening the community garden at its new site in time for planting. With the wonderful assistance of the Wyandotte Engineering Department and Department of Public Services, 36 raised beds were built and installed. Three city water posts with two hose bibs each and hoses with water wands, are provided for gardener use. DPS provided their own custom mix of topsoil and compost for the garden beds, which is very productive soil. The community garden was officially reopened in its new permanent location on June 1, 2019. Even the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 could not slow us down, although all gardeners were required to mask up and observe social distancing rules. All 36 beds in the community garden Phase 1 were occupied and planted in 2021!

Phase 2 of the garden will involve six wheelchair-accessible garden beds and six garden beds raised about four

feet off the ground to accommodate those ambulatory persons who cannot easily kneel or bend over to garden in

Darrin said he and the rest of the Beautification Commission are grateful for the support the Community Garden has received from the city and from its residents. He added that the Wyandotte Beautification Commission continues to engage with the volunteer community, even during these difficult times. For more information on the many wonderful Beautification Commission programs you can engage with, and how to volunteer for our events or “Adopt-A-Spot in Wyandotte”, visit the Beautification Commission on the city’s web site www.wyandotte.net, or visit the Wyandotte Beautification Commission on the Commission’s Facebook page. You can also email the Beautification Commission directly at beautification@wyan.org, or call the Hotline number at (734) 324-7293.

Metroparks still available for outdoor fun, activities

Summer is slowly slipping away, but the Huron Clinton Metroparks want to remind you that any time of year is a good time to visit one of Southeastern Michigan’s four parks. The four area Metroparks - Lake Erie, Oakwoods, Lower Huron and Willow - are open year round and they each offer their own unique brand of outdoor adventure. Fall is an especially beautiful time in the parks. Be sure to check them out. Lake Erie Metropark The 1,607-acre Lake Erie Metropark features three miles of captivating Lake Erie shoreline and sweeping vistas that you can only get with a Great Lake and great river. Follow the path of lake freighters moving up and down along the Detroit River against exceptional views of Sugar Island, Grosse Ile, and Celeron Island. Scan the sky of this popular bird-watching site, with more than 300 species recorded, and you just might spot a migrating broad-wing hawk or bald eagle flying above. This designated “Important Bird Area” is one of the premier hawk-watching sites in North America. Plan on adding some recreational activity to your day with an 18-hole regulation golf course, the Marshlands Museum and Nature Center, boat

launches and a marina. Hike through miles of nature trails or kayak along coastal wetlands. In the winter, walk along a cleared 1.6-mile paved trail, cross-country ski along 4-miles of flat, groomed trails, or ice fish for perch. Smaller guests are never forgotten with a brand new

children’s play area with slides, minirock wall, and swings. Oakwoods Metropark Come to Oakwoods Metropark to enjoy the scenic woods and picturesque Huron River. The Nature Center and surrounding trails are centerpieces of this 1,756acre Metropark. Take a hike through mature

woodlands, along scenic overlooks of the backwaters of the Huron River, and to a 3-acre pond, all located within the Nature Study Area. At the Nature Center you can get up close to turtles swimming in a 700-gallon aquatic tank or look at a live snake. This Metropark also

features an equestrian trail and a paved, hike-bike trail connecting to Willow and Lower Huron Metroparks for a 15-mile trail (30-mile round trip). While at the park, stop at the Cedar Knoll Picnic Area to hike the nearby butterfly viewing trail, designated as a monarch waystation by Monarch Watch. Bring your canoe or kayak to ply the river behind the Nature Center.

Fish along the shore, at the Cedar Knoll Picnic area, or put in your rowboat at the fishing access

Lower Huron Metropark Lower Huron Metropark’s 1,258 acres of mature woodlands, grassy meadows, and the scenic Huron River. Run or inline skate along a paved, hike-bike trail. Shoreline fish or canoe along the river, as you observe swans or geese floating on the water. Lower Huron Metropark also offers scenic picnic areas, basketball, volleyball, and tennis courts. Come for a few hours or stay for the day. Willow Metropark Escape your routine and the doldrums of everyday life with a rejuvenating visit to Willow Metropark. This sanctuary is minutes away with 1,531 beautiful acres of mature woodlands, and the picturesque Huron River. Play a round of golf on an 18-hole golf course. Fish along the Huron River. Cross-country ski, ice fish or sled in the winter. Other features include a 4.5-mile hike-bike trail, a 24-hole disc golf course, and a children’s play area. Just one visit will make Willow Metropark your all-season getaway. SEE OUTDOOR, Page 11

STAY AT HOME HEALTHCARE Stay at Home Care LLC has been helping the elderly and disabled in the privacy of their own homes for 7 years. The business started as a result of both co-owners Brenda Rademan and Diana Cain having Diana Cain & Brenda Rademan difficulty finding the means to care for their own parents at home. “You speak with the owners; we aren’t a franchise like the rest of them.” said co-owners Brenda and Diana. When talking about your loved ones, there is nothing worse than dealing with impersonal care. At Stay at Home Care you can expect the friendly service of hand picked employees, and a care plan that revolves around your needs. In fact they are known for their 2 hour minimum for services. This minimum insures that they can provide you with care that works for your schedule. Stay at Home Care is proud to keep people in the homes they love, as long as possible.

Overcoming a sedentary life with chiropractic The past year brought inactivity to every household around the globe. As things slowed down and we stayed inside, our activity levels plummeted. And while many of us found new hobbies, interests, and television shows to help pass the time, it’s important to remember that our body was made to move. Living a sedentary life is risky and can lead to things like weight gain, loss of muscle, inflammation, reduced blood circulation and even a lower metabolism or hormonal imbalance. The less you move, the more pain you may feel—especially in your back. That’s because things like over-sitting may cause weaker back muscles and put excess pressure on discs, not to mention pinched nerves. If you’re ready to add safe activity back into your life, start small by incorporating stretches into your morning routine. Set hourly reminders on your phone to get up and walk around the house. If you’re dealing with back pain,

contact us to find some relief. Three tips for beating knee pain While knee pain might be common, it shouldn’t be running your life. Here are a few helpful tips for combatting knee pain and getting back to living the life you love. 1. For a new knee injury, remember to pay the PRICE — that’s protection, rest, ice, compression and elevation. This can be especially helpful for a sprain or soft tissue injury. Protect your knee with a brace if needed, rest

ENROLL FOR FALL 2021

adequately, apply ice and compression when needed, and elevate the injury slightly. 2. Watch your posture. Sitting in chairs and couches that you “sink” into can cause added strain on your knees. You’ll also want to move gently and frequently as over-sitting can cause tender joints to stiffen. 3. Book a visit with us. We’ll do our best to craft a custom care plan that puts you on the road to recovery.

Rainbow foods to boost your health Plant-based food isn’t just healthy… it’s pretty to look at, too! If you’re looking for ways to brighten up your plate (and diet) with foods that are jam-packed with nutrients, consider eating the rainbow with these healthy vegetables. Red: Radishes are high in calcium and potassium, not to mention rich in antioxidants. Orange: Crunchy or cooked, carrots are an excellent source of beta carotene and fiber. Yellow: Golden beets are low in calories and may help improve digestive health. Green: Rich in Vitamin K, dark and leafy watercress can be tossed into a salad or blended into a soup. Blue and purple: Eggplant is an excellent source of magnesium and Vitamin B6, and a perfect pasta substitute in your favorite Italian dish.

Junior Michael Makuch leading Bears again Makuch is a junior now, and he occupies a familiar position at the top of the Roosevelt pack.

Michael Makuch had a great sophomore cross country season. He led the Bears throughout and capped the year with a berth at the Michigan HIgh School Athletic Association Division 1 state finals. Makuch is a junior now, and he occupies a familiar position at the top of the Roosevelt pack. At the 20-team Rambling Rock Invitational at Willow Metropark on Sept. 11, Makuch led the Bears with a run of 16:58. Sam Rankine, who was a solid and reliable No, 2 man for coach Jordan Thackery last year, was next for the Bears at the Rambling Rock with a time of 17:35. Riley Greene, Christian Mendez and Luke Ivity finished the scoring for Roosevelt On the girls side of the race, Roosevelt was 1oth among 21 teams. Junior Amanda Cost just missed out on a top 10 finish, running 19:20 to finish in 11th place. Senior Aubry Migoski was next in 21st place in 19:53. Lauren Moreno, Stevie Pizzo and Paige Chinavare

finished the Roosevelt scoring. The Rambling Rock, which featured some of the top cross country schools in Southeastern Michigan, was a good warm-up for the Bears, who now get the season started in earnest. The Bears were among 42 schools running in two division at the Huron Invitational on Sept. 18, they were at the Lake Erie Metropark on Sept. 21 for the first Downriver League Jamboree of the season and they will be in Monroe on Saturday, Sept. 25, where they will see, among others, league rivals Woodhaven, Trenton and Carlson, as well as top teams Dearborn Divine Child, Saline and Macomb Dakota.

Bears beat Anderson for first football win of 2021 Hank Minckiewicz Wyandotte Warrior

The 2021 Roosevelt football team did not get off to the kind of start to the season that it had envisioned, but after back-to-back losses to a pair of tough opponents, coach Ron Adams’ squad broke into the win column with a 31-14 decision over Anderson on Sept. 10. The Bears opened the season with a 38-23 loss to Downriver League rival Allen Park and followed it with a 37-14 loss to non-league Waterford Mott before righting the ship against Anderson in Southgate. Allen Park and Mott each began the season with 3-0 records. Against Anderson, Roosevelt built a 17-0 halftime lead, but the spunky Titans scored 14 points in the second half and Roosevelt’s lead was just 24-14 early in the fourth quarter. Anderson marched into Wyandotte territory again, but the Bear defense stiffened and forced the Titans to turn the ball over on downs. After taking back over, Roosevelt raced down the field and punched in a touchdown that put the final nail in the coffin for Anderson. It was an all-around balanced performance for the Bears as quarterback Donavan Canterberry passed for 179 yards and five Bears carried it for another 162 yards. Canterbury was 13-of-20 through the air and tossed for a pair of scores. DeAndre Bell toted the ball 13 times for 55 yards and a score, Canterbury carried five times for 43 yards and Max Buindo had 43 yards and a touchdown on just two carries. Xavier Byrne was the leading receiver with five catches for 48 yards and Bell and Chase Cline combined for another five catches and each caught a touchdown pass. Ethan Breaux and Elvis Valverde also each caught two passes. The win evened Wyandotte Downriver League record at 1-1 and kept them in touch with the unbeaten league leaders, Allen Park (3-0), Trenton (2-0) and Woodhaven (2-0). In its battle with Allen Park to begin the season, the Bears were victimized by big plays, including a long kickoff return for a touchdown to start the second half. SEE BEARS Page 21

Continued from page 20 Allen Park was leading 10-0 at the time and the touchdown dropped them deeper into a hole. The Jags scored 21 more second-half points and at one time led 38-10 before Wyandotte got two touchdowns in the final six minutes of the contest. Roosevelt scored on a 32year field goal by Valverde on the first play of the fourth quarter and on a 55-yard scoring strike from Canterberry to Breaux. Late in the game, back-up quarterback Josh Pente had a 43-yard scoring run and Biundo scored on a one-yard run.Canterbury finished the game with 17 completions for 185 yards and the Bears rushed for 170, but despite nearly 400 yards of total offense, the Bears did not put the ball in the end zone early enough or often enough to overcome the Jaguars “Allen Park is a good football team. In order to beat a team like that you’ve got to be sound in your assignments,

Xavier Byrne

early on we were not,” said Adams. Like the Allen Park game, there was lots of scoring in the fourth quarter of the Wyandotte-Waterford Mott match-up. Unfortunately for the Bears, Mott did all of it. A close game was blown open when the Corsairs scored 23 unanswered points in the final 12 minutes. The game was 7-7 at halftime and 14-14 at the end of three quarters before Mott exploded and pulled away. This was not one of Roosevelt’s better offensive performances as the Bears totaled just 190 yards for the game. Canterberry completed just 7-of-16 passes for 71 yards and Bell was the leading ball carrier with 14 runs for 56 yards. Brennan Miller added 55 yards on four carries. The Bears hosted 0-3 Taylor on Sept. 17. They will play at Carlson, another one-loss league team struggling to keep up with the leaders, in Gibraltar Sept. 24. The rest of the schedule looks like this: Oct. 1 at Lincoln Park; Oct. 8 Woodhaven at home; Oct. 15 at Edsel Ford; and Oct. 22 Trenton at home.
