SEPTEMBER 2024, WEEK BEGINNING SEPTEMBER 2
Dear VA-AAP,
This time of year is always filled with excitement and anticipation, and it’s a wonderful opportunity for us to reflect on the importance of staying healthy as we come together in our school communities
One of our top priorities this yea students returning to school is that th This underscores the importance of p
Our commitment to this is exemplified by Erin Brickley, our Immunization Chair, highlighted in this week's Member Spotlight. Erin has been a cornerstone in leading our chapter’s efforts on numerous immunization initiatives.
As we approach Labor Day, celebrated on the first Monday of September, we also have the opportunity to reflect on its significance Labor Day honors the hard work and contributions of workers who have built this country and highlights the labor movement's enduring impact. For our children, Labor Day offers valuable educational benefits:
Inspiring Future Leaders: Understanding the dedication of workers can encourage children to think about the role they might play in the future and inspire them to strive for change and leadership
Family Time: Labor Day marks the end of summer and provides a perfect opportunity for families to come together and spend quality time. It’s a moment to cherish and enjoy one another’s company before the new school year picks up pace.
Appreciating the Value of Labor: This holiday can also help children grasp the importance of work and how it contributes to the well-being of society. It’s a chance to instill a sense of appreciation for the efforts of others and the role each person plays in our community
As we move forward into this school year, let’s remember the importance of keeping our children healthy, both physically and emotionally. I encourage all of you to take proactive steps in health and wellness, and to support each other in making this a successful and enriching year.

What inspired you to become a pediatrician?
When I was young, I would always go to work with my father, who is a veterinarian. I enjoyed this work but felt a pull to work with humans. My passion and ministry growing up was always working with younger children, and pediatrics was a great fit!
How do you balance work, volunteering for VA-AAP, and family life?
Finding a good work-life balance has been important to me. Working an outpatient-based pediatrics practice has helped with any needed flexibility in my job and volunteer roles with VA-AAP. I try and set aside a night or two for AAP work and at least one evening where I turn my work brain off. Running after my two and four year olds helps me stay grounded!
What is one piece of advice or tip for new members of VA-AAP?
Don't be afraid to get involved! I applied to join a group and after being involved in the first group, was introduced to the wonderful group of pediatricians that is our board as well as was nominated for my current role. Pediatricians are known to be welcoming, and that is very true of this group!
Describe an interesting hobby or pastime that you have:
My favorite hobby (and other love in life) is musical theatre! I started performing in shows at the age of 7 and continued through high school with singing, dancing, and acting. I enjoy going to watch theatre as well and hope to one day get back to performing in community theatre. My favorite role was Benjamin Franklin in the musical 1776 - my all girls high school produced the show with a 'backwards' cast - 25 women and 2 men. It was a blast! My dream roles would be Millie in Thoroughly Modern Millie or the Narrator in Joseph, which are two of my favorite shows.
What is your favorite movie?
My favorite movie(s) are any version of Cinderella, particularly the Disney cartoon and "Ever After." I've always loved Cinderella and still love to meet her whenever we travel to Disney.
What are you currently binge-watching?
I recently finished Bridgerton season 3. I can't wait for the next season!

HEART+ STUDY RESPONSE FORM

The American Academy of Pediatrics’ Pediatric Research in Office Settings (PROS) teams are currently recruiting clinicians/staff, parents, and teens to participate in focus groups as part of their HEART+ teen suicide prevention study. The purpose of the focus groups is to explore the use of a digital teen suicide intervention by pediatric primary care practices with no embedded mental health services –the idea is for this intervention, ideally shaped by those who would ultimately use it, to serve as a support bridge until a teen can secure comprehensive mental health services.
Below you will also find information about a new tool, launched by the Center of Excellence on Social Media and TheHelpAt-RiskTeensThrive(HEART+)studyneedsyourhelp!
This research opportunity is a collaboration between:
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Pediatric Re-search in Office Settings (PRS) research network
University of Pittsburgh (Pitt)
Study Funder: National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH)
Principal Investigator: Stephanie Stepp, PhD, at Pitt
Research opportunity purpose:
Take part in refining digital suicide prevention screening and treatment tools that identify, triage, and manage teens with depression or at risk of suicide. Help design digital screening and treatment tools that are user-friendly for teens, parents, and practices!
This research opportunity is part of a larger study that will later pilot test these digital suicide prevention tools within pediatric primary care
What is involved for your practice?
Identify patients 12-17 years with a past history of depression or suicide behavior to invite to a 1-hour confidential focus group
Refer parents of patients 12-17 to PITT to learn more about the confidential focus group Parent permission is required for a teen to participate. Parents are invited to separate confidential focus groups too! Select practice team members (clinicians and staff) to participate in a 1-hour confidential focus groups.
To join the study:
