The desert sands roared to life as off road enthusiasts and skilled riders and drivers from across the southwest converged for an exhilarating weekend of desert off road racing. The AZOP Racing 2024 season kicked off with Shorty’s Blythe Grand Prix 1, held in the vast and challenging desert terrain, which proved to be a true test of skill, endurance, and the indomitable spirit of the competitors.
The race kicked off at the break of dawn, with the ever popular Stacyc E-Bikes. Zoey King was flying on the course – taking the overall win and the top of the 6-7 year olds. Taxson Watson placed second in the same category. In the 4-5 year olds, Noah Ambriz, Elias Martinez, and Nathaniel Hindmarch made the podium. And the 2-3 year olds had quite a showing with Maverick Atteberry, Kyrie Perez, and Mackenzie King taking home trophies. After the Stacyc, we had the start of the PeeWee races – Dirtbikes, Quads, and 170 UTVs. The engines roared to life, and the first wave of participants sped off. Spencer Gibson, Gannon Balderamma, and Danny Jarman each had 15 laps to finish at the top of the 65C class. For the 50cc 7-8 year olds, Reed Honberger, Riker Griffith, and Elijah Lennon led the pack. The 4-6 year olds on the 50cc bikes were won by Fynnigan McConnell, Liam Ambriz, and Parker Gibson. For the quads, Westin Loan and Ricki McRoy took first and second in the 50-79cc 4-6 year old class. The ATV 80-150cc Beginner class had a great showing, with Jace Verkulian, Robert McRoy, and
Maxson McKinney taking home trophies. Emma Martinez, Lucy Giles, and Jesse Llamas were dominant in the 80-150cc Advanced class. The 170cc UTV cars are always fun to watch, and these kids did not disappoint! Allanna Fernandez and Chloe Hurn took first and second in the advanced class. Blaine Proctor and Braxton Furnell battled it out in the Intermediate group. For the beginners, Addie Atteberry just squeezed by Kaysen Stowell to take the gold, while Kaysen got 2nd place. Mason Naughton rounded out the top 3 in the class.
Up next was the biggest race of the day and a crowd favorite – the Big Bikes. Shorty’s never ceases to amaze as the course, meticulously designed to challenge even the most seasoned riders, featured a mix of motocross, sandy washes, and treacherous whoops that demanded precision and nerve. The Pro class had Chase Gunderson taking first, with Braxton Grosse in 2nd place, and Austin Alexander in 3rd. Open A was not only won by Samuel Campbell, but he also took overall for the entire race group. Hot on his heels was Chad Goodsell and Austin Nordgren that finished in the top 3. Joshua Caton, Sebastian Girello, and Cole Fryar were the top finishers in the Open B class, and Drew Johnston, Preston Burr, and Mason Madewell led the Open C. Joseph Giles, Lane Makrdichian, and Logan Skaggs were flying to finish atop the 125-250 A class. Meanwhile Joseph Greenlee, Bryton Bluth, and Devin Weller finished in the top 3 for 125250 B.

The 125-250 C class had a large turnout with Luke Sutterfield getting the 1st place trophy, followed by Crew Griffoen and Owen Ward. Todd Jarman did great, winning the Vet 30+A class, with Tono Bluth, Mike Vega, and Alex Van Bogart taking the lead in the Vet 30+B class. Cody Raue, Albert Moskalski, and Zach Brennan-Muller took 1st-3rd place in the Vet 30+C class. The Senior 40+ class had quite the showing, with Kyle Jones, Heath Mitchell, and Sam Christenson taking top prizes for the A group, and Nathan Waunch, Jason Lankford, and Joshua Bennett being the fastest of the C group. The Master 50+A group had Robert Barnum take the 1st place trophy, with Todd Johnson getting 2nd, and Tim Wussow getting 3rd. Our Super Senior 60+A group was won by Brandon Roberts, with Ken Tapert, and Michael Jarmon rounding out the top 3.
As the day progressed, a cloud of dust hung in the air, testament to the intense battles taking place on the track. The mini-bikes are always full of exciting battles, with the top two finishers just seconds apart. Luke Sutterfield just edged out over Christian Granados for the overall win, and they took 1st and 2nd respectively in the 80-150cc B class, just finishing in front of Ryder Yates who got 3rd. Ryland Fuggitt had a good showing, taking first in the 80-150cc A class, and Brody Holtzman held off Ethan Maggard and Rush Wermes to top the 80-150cc C class. Royce Pendleton, Wyatt Parent, and Blake Arsuga were the top finishers in the 65cc B class, and Blake Kistter and Ryker Castillo did great in the Mini-Open. Savanna Nordgren looked good out there – taking first place in the Women’s C, while Eric Troutman did a phenomenal 4 laps on his E-Bike.
The pit bikes and pull starts are always a blast to watch – and Jeff Lewis edging out John Horner on the Pull
Starts, while Gunner Deatherage beat Chase Gunderson on the pit bikes. Mini-Quads took to the track next and some impressive racing was happening. Kohyn Perry took first place over Kate Proctor in the 250-400cc Class. The 91300cc 10-15 year olds was won by Sage McKinney, with Ty Thompson getting 2nd, and Mason Mulgrew taking 3rd. The 71-150cc 8-11 year olds had Cutter Gehrts, Jace Verkulien, and Emma Martinez taking the top spots.
Next up, it was time for the Big Quads and Trikes. Ian Kubik was the lone Pro, taking home first place. The Vet Pro battle ended with Ron Suor in first, Jeff Wright in second, and Michael Morgan in third place. Wyatt Rock not only won the Expert class, but took the overall win. Julyssa Pesquiera got second in the Expert class, with Evr Loan taking third. Sportsman class had Jared Johnson in first place, local Ryder Nugent in second, and his brother Cooper Nugent in third. With the 3-Wheelers, Ed Hicks took the win, with Rob Parsons in second, and Paul Airey in third.
One of the highlights of the event was the diversity of vehicles on display. From sleek and modified UTVs to purpose-built off road machines, each participant brought their unique flair to the competition. The sheer variety of vehicles added an extra layer of excitement, with fans eagerly cheering on their favorites as they navigated the challenging course. Blythe native Chase De Sousa Dias took the overall win and dominated the Pro Turbo class. He beat out Bruce St. Germain and Parker Melton. Drivers skillfully maneuvered through tight corners, conquered towering dunes, and faced unexpected challenges that tested both their machinery and their mettle. The desert's unforgiving nature added an element of unpredictability, keeping both drivers and spectators on the edge of their seats. Thomas

Melton got first in the Pro N/A class, while Dan Hurn topped the Pro Open. The 1000cc Turbos were won by Jacob Mueller, with Rigel Woida and Nate Pearson taking second and third. Dustin Dooley put on quite a show, but unfortunately only completed two laps in the 1000cc N/A class. Carter Shull is one fast kid, taking first place in the Youth 1000cc/RS1 No Restrictor class. The 570 race had four racers battling it out in the Beginner class, with Spencer Gibson taking home first, Braxton Sherman in second, Blaine Proctor in third, and Chloe Hurn rounding out the class.
Day 2 kicked off with the Staycic E-Bikes back on the track. Zoey King took the overall win, followed by Noah Ambriz, Elias Martinez, Taxon Watson, and Brooke Parker finishing in the top 5 overall. Mackenzie King, Maverick Atteberry, and Ben Proctor all showed they aren’t afraid to get after it in the 2-3 year old group. The mini-quads were next with Sage McKinney taking the overall win for the day, also dominating the 91-300cc 10-15 year olds. He was followed by Mason Mulgrew and Ty Thompson. Cutter Gehrts and Kate Proctor also showed their strength, winning their prospective classes. The mini-bikes had another large group of racers, with Luke Sutterfield, Ryder Yates, and Jake Pennington winning not only the top 3 spots in their 80-150cc B class, but also the top spots overall. Ethan Maggard, Keegan Bott, and Hayden Griffith battled it out in the 80-150cc C class taking the top spots, while Royce Pendleton and Wyatt Parent finished first and second in the 65cc B class. Blake Kistter won the Mini-Open, with Karina Pendleton just beating Hailley Waunch in the Women’s C class. John Horner took the victory over Jeff Lewis in the pull-starts.
Peewee action continued, starting with the 170cc UTVs. Allan Fernandez took first place over Chloe Hurn by less than 1 second in the Advanced Class! What an exciting race to watch!! Blaine Proctor just beat Braxton Furnell in the Intermediate, while Blaine also took the overall win. Meanwhile, Addie Atteberry, Mason Naughton, Kaysen Stowell, Robert Grimes, and Maisyn Chase Gunderson, first Pro

Atteberry were the top 5 to finish in the 170cc Beginner class. Peewee Quads continued on the track with Zane Gehrts, Emma Martinez, and Lucy Giles taking the trophies for the Advanced class. Right behind them, in the Beginner class, Jace Verkulien, Robert McRoy, and Maxon McKinney showed that they were ready to battle and took home some trophies. Westin Loan and Ricki McRoy got first and second in the 50-79cc 4-6 year olds. The Peewee Bikes had a huge turnout! Spencer Gibson took the overall win out of 36 racers, also finishing on top of the 65C class, just in front of Gannon Balderrama and Conner Daffern. The 50cc 7-8 year olds had Riker Griffith taking home first place, with Reed Honberger in second, and Elijah Lennon just inching out Robert Grimes for third place. The 4-6 year olds had Fynnigan McConnell on top, with Parker Gibson in second place, and Liam Ambriz in third place for his class.
Seventy-seven Big Bikes returned for day 2 action, with Chase Gunderson taking the overall win. He was followed in the top 5 overall by Braxton Grosse, Douglas Nordgren, Lane Makrdichian, and Jeremy Nash. The overall Pros were Chase Gunderson, Braxton Grosse, and Austin Alexander. Some other notable showings in their class include Gunner Deatherage in the 125-250B, edging out Joseph Grenlee. Lane Makrdichian won the 125-250A, an entire lap ahead of second place Logan Skaggs and third place John Smallhouse. Luke Sutterfield showed he is a powerhouse, taking first place in the 125-250C class ahead of Ashton Stowell, and Cooper Nugent. Both Sutterfield and Nugent raced multiple races throughout the day, showing their
endurance is unmatched. Douglas Nordgren took the win in the Open A class, finishing just ahead of Jeremy Nash and Skyler Rainer. Open B saw Sebastian Girello take the lead, with Cole Fryar in second, and Austin Kistler in third.
The best race, in my humble opinion, to watch during the day was the battle that took place in Open C. With Skylar Wallace taking the win, the true battle was for second place between Beau Balderrama and Mason Madewell. Everytime through the scoring chute, these two were on each other’s tails, with Balderrama just inching out ahead of Madewell. Todd Johnson was victorious in the Master 50+A class, with Tim Wussow and Robert Barnum rounding out the top 3. Senior 40+A had Kyle Jones on top, with Cary Wallace in second, and David Dyck in third. Hector Enriquez took the win for the 40+B, with Nathan Waunch winning over Jason Lankford and Jared Louis in the 40+C class. Super Senior 60+A had Brandon Roberts in first place, with Michael Jarmon in second, and Gary Peterson in third. Todd Jarman won the Vet 30+A class, while Mike Vega beat out Steven Harmon for the victory in the Vet 30+B class. Vet 30+C was won by Cody Raue, with Zach Brenna-Muller in second and Michael Baxter in third. Savanna Nordgren showed she could hang with the boys, getting first place in the Women’s category.
Ian Kubik showed what he can do on the Big Quads, taking the overall win and winning the Pro Class. Ron Suor dominated the Vet-Pro class, just beating out Michael Morgan and Paul Airey. Evr Loan took first place in the experts, leaving Ryan McKinney in second and Glen Brazaitis

in third. Jake Marlatt showed that he was here to race! He took first in the Sportsman class ahead of second place James Thompson, third place Ryder Nugent, and fourth place Miguel Navarro.
Finally, the UTVs took to the track for the last time of the weekend. It was a battle of the locals as Clayton Winiecki put on an aeronautical spectacle, flying though the air and into first place overall! Racie Moore was hot on his tail, ending in second place overall by only 4 seconds! Jacob Mueller, Carter Shull, and Bruce St. Germain rounded out the top 5 finishers overall, while Dustin Dooley showed his stuff, finishing 6th. The 570s were back into battle mode, with Spencer Gibson taking the win over Chloe Hurn in second, and Braxton Sherman in third.
Throughout the weekend, the event showcased not only the physical prowess of the drivers and riders but also the camaraderie and sportsmanship within the off road community. Participants shared stories of triumphs and challenges, and spectators witnessed the true spirit of off road racing - a celebration of a shared passion for adventure and the thrill of conquering the elements.
The AZOP Shorty’s Grand Prix 1 proved to be more than just a race; it was an immersive experience that united off road enthusiasts, showcased the capabilities of these rugged machines, and left everyone eagerly anticipating the next thrilling chapter in the world of desert off road racing.

She was a spitfire of a little tyke who knew what she wanted and went for it and heaven help anyone who stood in her way.
Could she be the reason behind the missing 20 pages in this issue of the magazine you're reading? Could be.
Just barely in my 50's and enjoying the freedom of being an empty nester, this little one comes along, and jolts us out of that carefree state. Temporarily first, then after a one year reprieve, she was back at the age of three. A visit to the courthouse
and the juvenile court judge pronounced her our's with a flick of his pen across the final adoption decree. I was in shock temporarily. "I will be almost 70 by the time she is 18 I lamented to a friend."
Then I blinked my eyes and here we are.
February was to be a busy month anyway. Follow up appointments from a recent cataract surgery, and it was finally time to get her driver's license. She'd put it off this long to save herself the cost of car insurance. But 18 was about to roll around and she decided it was time. Now. We still had 10 or 15 hours of driver's training to rack up (one of the perks of being homeschool parents, you also get to homeschool their driver's training). Got that done and set up the appointment for her driving test, only to have to cancel it
when a throat infection had her flat on her back.
And in the meantime, never mind that we had a scheduled book launch of Book 2 in our murder mystery series to fit in among the driving lessons, doctor's appointments and birthday plans, she

also mentioned that she was going to get married a week after her birthday.
I recall the guy-in-the-garage saying something about permission given to get married in the spring after graduation. But who needs permission, when you're about to turn 18? I pondered suggesting she wait and then I recalled a Sunday morning when she was three years old and we were leaving church. A busy church with hundreds of people pouring out across the parking lot and down the stairs leading to the street. We were there, with that strongwilled three-year-old determined to pull her own backpack on wheels down the stairs, no matter how long it took. No matter how many hundreds of people it seemed were behind us waiting. I remember trying to take the backpack from her to speed things up and it went over about as well as I imagined suggesting she wait until May would go over. So I kept quiet.
Thankfully for us she took care of the majority of the marriage plans for the small wedding, all we had to do was survive the daily breakdown and hysteria of a girl with too much to do and too many decisions to
make. Oh and dole out a little money here and there.
And it was a good thing, because my body had other plans while that was going on. Let's see what having a mini-stroke is like.
I ended up in the ER on the morning of February 16, diagnosed with a transient ischemic attack and spent two days in the hospital. It was a big wake-up call for me that I needed to get serious about taking care of my health as the guy-in-the-garage has been after me to do for years.
It was a busier month than I ever intended, but we survived it all, and even got the magazine published, minus 20 pages. Seems like a good enough excuse, doesn't it? E

he King of the Hammers had a humble beginning. In 2007, a pair of off road racing enthusiasts, Dave Cole and Jeff Knoll, one a desert racing fan and the other a rock climbing fan, decided it might be fun to combine the two into a single event. They drew out a proposed course on a napkin and invited some friends out to the Johnson Valley Off Highway Vehicle Area between Lucerne Valley and Yucca Valley for the first, and completely illegal, running of the King of the Hammers, so called because they’d dubbed the tricky rock sections with names like Sledge Hammer, Claw Hammer and Jack Hammer.
Twelve teams competed in that first King of the Hammers, but as the event got more attention from the offroad lovers who wanted to be involved, they went legit and the event has exploded into one of the biggest off-road racing events in the country, if not the world, expanding from one race into a twoweek off-roading festival featuring races for many off-road classes ranging from Class 11 stock VW Bugs (the class Herbie would race in if he raced off-road) to the big, thundering, four wheel drive, mostly hand built monsters, that compete in the main event itself.
Home base for the action is “Hammertown” a portable city that is assembled each year on the dry lake bed and averages over 20,000 residents during the now two week long festival. Just think Burning Man for off-roaders.

The 2024 running of what is now known as “Progressive King Of The Hammers presented by Nitto and powered by Optima Batteries” took place from January 19 to February 3rd, with the Grand Finale, now called the “Nitto Race of Kings” ending the event.
While the event has seen some nasty weather early on, the weather cleared up for Race of Kings and 116 racers lined up for the start of the Nitto Race of Kings, where the 116 entries took to the track Noah’s Ark style, two by two at 30 second intervals.
Two miles into the race, a traffic jam developed at Turkey Claw, the first of the rocky portions of the race, and that allowed some of the earlier starters to pull out some
distance from those caught in the melee. At the end of the largely open desert section lap former King Loren Healy held the lead over Jason Scherer, another former King, and Casey Currie, Cade Rodd and Raul Gomez, hoping for a third straight Hammers crown, rounding out the top five.
Laps two and three brought the rocky bits into play. Healy had dropped back after having to make a pit stop to fix a flat tire and another stop to repair a broken power steering pump, and this handed the lead to Currie, who had already passed Scherer for second place. Farther behind, Gomez was on the move blasting though the pack and soon taking the lead away from Currie and looking good for his three-peat.
Behind Gomez and Currie, things weren’t going as smoothly as third place runner Rodd got stuck in a tight section of Outer Limits and fourth place Scherer tried to use the nose of Rodd’s car as traction for a pass. This did not work and the two ended up hopelessly stuck together and the rest of field trudged by.
The third and final lap turned out to be one of the weirdest ever for the event. Raul Gomez seemed to have this third straight Kings crown locked up but he rolled his car onto its side in the section known as Big Johnson, and as a single seat racer with no

co-driver, Raul was not able to right the car by himself and nobody was anxious to help him, dropping him out of the race. This allowed Currie to take the lead over Chaney.
Hope was not lost for the Gomez family as Raul’s brother Marcos had now managed to slide into third place with a shot at a good finish, if not the win. But that hope was dashed when mechanical failure dropped him out of the competition. Healy, who seemed out of contention after a flat tire and power steering pump change, had made a remarkable comeback and was now in fourth place.
Currie, driving a modified Can Am X3 UTV, now seemed to have the advantage with a big lead with time running out for his pursuers. But a broken drive shaft and damaged ring and pinion put him down but not out, slowing his pace considerably, but leaving him still moving forward. This gave the lead to Chaney with Healy close behind, but Healy caught and passed Chaney in Outer Limits to take the lead. Healy seemed to be on the way to another win but with the finish line almost in sight his transmission failed and he was out.
This put Chaney back in the lead, but with the damaged front suspension he was crawling toward the finish line. Going slower and slower toward the finish line, Chaney crossed as the first finisher and was celebrated as such. But wait, this is off road racing and it’s not where you finish, it’s how long it took you to complete the distance. With a few drivers out there still capable of bettering Chaney’s time, it was now time to wait if any of those still on the course could do so.
Overlooked throughout most of the race was the third Gomez brother J.P., and he came home second after starting 99th on the grid. After a little more waiting to insure nobody else could beat his time, J.P. was declared the winner, upholding family honor and being crowned King.
Brett Harrell finished second with Josh Webb third, Daniel Fresh fourth and Erik Miller rounding out the top five.

Clifford "Corky" Keener
Five AMA Grand National Championship Series Wins
Clifford “Corky” Keener is a former flat track racer who persevered through tough times and competed during one of American flat track racing’s golden eras.
Known by his nickname, “Mr. Dirt,” he competed full time in the AMA Grand National Championship Series from 1973 until his retirement in 1980. He has five wins to his credit in AMA Grand National competition.
Keener raced during one of flat track racing’s most competitive eras. He often found himself lining up at AMA Grand National races with future AMA Motorcycle Hall of
Famers Jay Springsteen, Kenny Roberts, Gary Scott, Hank Scott, Steve Eklund and Rex Beauchamp.
Keener said it was “an honor” to be inducted into the AMA Motorcycle Hall of Fame and be listed alongside the great flat track racers he competed against.
“Those guys were the cream of the crop,” he said.
Keener was born and raised in Flint, Mich., and started

riding motorcycles at age 13. His first foray into motorized transportation was a go-kart his father built for him. He eventually crashed the go-kart into a ditch and found a small motorcycle from a junkyard to replace it.
His interest in motorcycling grew, and it was not long until he learned about the competition side of riding. When he was 16, he was riding his Cushman Eagle when he met another rider who told him about motorcycle ice racing.
Keener first went to an ice racing event as a spectator, but soon after bought a two-stroke BSA to compete himself. A motorcycle shop near his home financially supported his racing endeavors. That shop had built a 250cc flat track racer and wanted Keener to race it. He went to his first flat track race as a spectator, and the racing bug bit him even harder.
He had to wait until he was 18 to get his novice flat track racing license. But, once he had his license, he raced for several motorcycle owners in need of a rider, and he
performed well enough to obtain an expert license.
Keener’s racing career had to be put on pause, however, when he was drafted into the military in 1965. In 1966, he applied for an early discharge and was able to return home to help his family through some difficult times.
After returning home, he began working and did not have the money to revive his racing career. Once his family’s financial situation stabilized, he saved enough money to buy a Harley-Davidson 250 and got back into racing in 1970.
He raced in Canada in 1970 and 1971, thanks to a local Harley-Davidson dealer who connected him with a motorcycle owner.
Keener got his first taste of racing a 750cc machine in 1971 and scored his first expert win that year at a race in Troy, Ohio. His racing career was put on hold again when the owner died shortly after the 1971 season ended.
Keener sat out the 1972 racing season and considered hanging up his leathers for good.

#62 Corky Keener racing with #31 Rex Beauchamp at Ascot in 1974
His fortune changed, and he got his first taste of professional racing in 1973.
Future AMA Motorcycle Hall of Famer Bart Markel asked Keener to ride one of his satellite Harley-Davidsons in the AMA Grand National Championship Series. Keener scored two Grand National wins in 1974 on half-mile tracks in Louisville, Ky., and Terre Haute, Ind., and was promoted to the Harley-Davidson factory team for the 1975 season.
In his six years with the factory outfit, Keener scored three more AMA Grand National Championship Series wins.
He said his most memorable win took place at the halfmile track in Toledo, Ohio, in 1975. It was his father’s first time seeing his son compete in a national race.
“My dad had helped finance my early years in racing,” Keener said. “He didn’t realize I was racing in a national championship series.”
Keener continued his professional racing career until the 1980 season.
While he had not suffered a serious injury during his career, Keener said the lesser injuries became more painful. He knew what it was like to have to step away from the sport, and said he realized things weren’t going to get any better at that point.
“Sooner or later, you have to move on,” he said.
After he retired from racing, Keener returned to working on an electrician apprenticeship with General Motors that he had started before he got back into racing. Keener was inducted into the AMA Hall of Fame in 2018.

General Plans
Every National Forest, BLM area and State Vehicular Recreation Area operate under general plans. These plans have everything to do with what we can do in the areas. What type, where and when you can use your vehicle is controlled by the plans. Where or even if you can camp is also controlled by the plans. Taking part in plan formations and upgrades is crucial in protecting our rights. Three SVRAs are upgrading their plans now. Carnegie, Hungry Valley and Ocotillo Wells are all at different stages of updating their plans. I just reviewed the proposed plan for Carnegie and am pleased to report there is nothing toxic in the proposed plan. Carnegie is a 1500 acre park between Modesto and San Francisco that mainly caters to motorcycles but has a 4X4 challenge
SDORC PRESIDENT ED STOVIN
area and allows all vehicles to use various trails. In fact, there are a number of improvements planned for the park. Below is text taken directly from the draft plan document: There are numerous off-highway opportunities for motorcycles, ATVs, 4x4s, and side-by sides. The General Plan will continue to provide multiuse OHV routes and specific OHV use designated areas and provide more riding and practice opportunities.
OHV Use Goal 1: State Parks will maintain, improve, or expand visitor area connectivity, practice areas, and riding opportunities for all OHV recreationalists.
• OHV Use Guideline 1.1: Develop a new single native surface motorcycle trail, with turnouts, south of and parallel to Corral Hollow Creek, that will provide connectivity between
visitor experience areas and help reduce traffic on the main SVRA road (the exact trail alignment to be determined by SVRA staff and resource specialists).
• OHV Use Guideline 1.2: The existing special event/day-use area north of the existing Motocross (MX) track is underutilized. State Parks will consider developing a portion of or the entire area into an ATV track and/or a trials motorbike track, or other type of OHV practice facility.
• OHV Use Guideline 1.3: Develop a flat and oval kid’s mini-bike track on the east end of the SVRA campground. The track will improve safety by redirecting children away from riding among motorhomes, trailers, vehicles, and people in the campground.
• OHV Use Guideline 1.4: Finish rehabilitating the area south of the Franciscan OHV loop trail (including the area that was damaged in the 2015 Tesla Fire) into a sustainable OHV trail network for advanced riders (the exact trails alignments to be determined by SVRA staff and resource specialists).
• OHV Use Guideline 1.5: State Parks may enhance or develop

other trails, practice areas, and riding opportunities for motorized recreationists of all skill levels and as allowed in the visitor experience areas (may require additional environmental analysis).
State Parks will develop four campground host sites at the SVRA. Information on the Carnegie General Plan can be found at https://www. parks.ca.gov/?page_id=30807
The Ocotillo Wells plan is interesting because they have made two big efforts to start a plan update in recent years, only to stop cold. The plan formation is complicated by the fact that a large part of OW is owned by the BLM and managed by State Parks. So, a new plan will need to be independently completed by both State Parks and the BLM. The reason it was stopped last time was because the BLM pulled out of the project. Last time the OW plan got to the draft stage and while we didn't like all of it, most was good. We expect the plan process for OW to be introduced in the coming months and strongly encourage everyone who loves OW
to participate in the process. Look in future columns here for details and tips on how to comment
.
Legislation
Our new lobbyist gives us a bill update each Monday morning and we have been looking at a few bills until right at the deadline for this issue. As the bill introduction deadline has just passed, a flood of last-minute bills was introduced, and we have been given a long list of bills that may affect us to be reviewed. We will be looking at these bills for ones that will directly or indirectly affect us. As for bills we know about, the only one we are concerned with is SB708, which has been held over since last year. This bill will allow State Parks to issue a sticker for what were formerly red sticker racing motorcycles so they can be identified for
law enforcement, issued insurance and transported. Last year the bill was held in an Assembly committee. That committee chair has been changed and the bill has a shot at making it over the finish line this year.

Lakeside Rodeo. Audrey and the rest of our crew did an amazing job putting that event together. We have been talking about doing another event and with Laura at the helm we are moving our next event to the new Diane Jacobs Equestrian Facility in Lakeside, a short distance north of Lakeside Rodeo. We decided to choose the date of June 22 and began working towards it when we discovered that the OffRoad Nights event has been planned for the same day in Escondido.
After a lively discussion, we are pushing our date back to October 5th. This will make it a back to the desert event and we expect good weather and more time to put the pieces together for a great event. I toured the new facility and found it to be a wonderful venue. It has a very large covered space that we may be able to fit the entire event under.
The same facility will be hosting a real monster truck competition on March 23rd. I'm planning to attend monster trucks to see how an event will look there. Every Off-Road Trip Needs A Leftie!
PTom Severin 4x4 Coach
ity the left-handed person. With something like 90 percent of the population right-handed, lefties are at a distinct disadvantage. But it’s not all bad news. In fact, lefties offer unique contributions to society.
You’re probably thinking, “Hey, Tom, what do you know about left-handed people?” Quite a bit, actually. I am one. Going on many, many years, in fact. That’s a lot of living in a right-handed world. I have nothing against right-handed people, mind you. Just thought it’s time to stand up for the 10 – 15 percent of the population that favors the left hand.
What’s it like to be left-handed?
As I mentioned, it’s tough living in a right-handed world. Almost all coffee cups are made for right-handed people. No, I’m not talking about the placement of the handle. It’s the image or saying on the cup. When I grab a
right-handed coffee cup, the saying faces away. I don’t get to enjoy the inspiring phrase along with my cup of joe.
Of course, the same holds true for a right-handed person who uses a left-handed mug.
Scissors are the same way. The majority are righthanded. We lefties have to search for a left-hand model. Or risk cutting at an angle or a curve.
Certain tools are right-handed, too. I’ve become somewhat ambidextrous from using power tools over the years. The picture on the next page is a left-hander’s shower.
When we write or sign anything, we have to hold the left hand at a weird angle so we can see what we’re writing. We call it the hooked position. Geez. I get writer’s cramp at those book-signing events.
Lefties offer unique talents
We left-handed people are indispensable. You should invite at least one left-handed person to every four-wheeling excursion. Occasionally, a task requires reaching into a lefthand corner or space. Those situations are a bit awkward for a right-handed person. Not so for a leftie.
If you have just one set of gloves, you can share a glove with a right-handed buddy. Each person gets a glove
68 S&S OFF ROAD MAGAZINE - MARCH 2024 - Buy It In Print On Amazon! https://amzn.to/3RrrCQ0
suitable for the strong arm.
Play baseball? You have some advantage over righthanded hitters, research shows. As a group, lefties have a higher hitting average. Due to their stance at the plate, they’re in position to punch a grounder to right center. And then get a jump on the throw to first base.
Food cooked in a Dutch oven tastes much better when prepared by a leftie. Stirring the pot in a counterclockwise motion brings out the flavors more effectively. I’m serious! My stews and peach cobblers are a hit during every outing. It’s that slow, methodical stirring and mixing with my left hand that brings out the best in those ingredients.
Notable left-handed people throughout history We lefties are in good company. Here is just a sampling of famous or important lefthanded people:
• Buzz Aldrin
• Babe Ruth
• Sandy Koufax
• Oprah Winfrey
• Jay Leno

On top of that, at least one retailer in the nation is devoted to left-handed consumers. Lefty’s The Left Hand Store carries a wide assortment of merchandise for the office, home, school and more. Check it out online.
Are you left-handed?
Don’t despair. Be proud, you’re part of a special group. Roughly 10 -15 percent of the population is left-handed. Keep your chin up, and remember our motto: Lefties Do It Right.
P.S. This Aug. 13 is International Lefthanders Day. Mark your calendars, and get ready to celebrate with lefties everywhere.

Jimmy Lewis Joins NORRA Team as Motorcycle Race Director
NORRA is moving into a brand new era for motorcycle competitors with updated rules, new classes and a dedicated motorcycle race director; Dakar veteran and skills instructor Jimmy Lewis. NORRA is very pleased that Jimmy has joined the team to take NORRA motorcycle competition to the next level.
Motorcycle classes at the Mexican 1000 in 2024 will be split into Pro Rally, Amateur Rally and Sportsman. The Sportsman class will be for those who want to come down and have a great ride with their buddies. They will experience all the fun and excitement of NORRA racing, but will be on a less demanding course and be aided with GPS navigation–similar to the cars and UTV competition. The Sportsman class will not be eligible for prize money; they will be rewarded by the experience.
The Pro and Amateur Rally classes will navigate by road book only and be challenged with some of the most incredible and amazing terrain in Baja. Special stages will be exclusively for these two bike classes so they will travel to areas that have never been experienced before. Motorcycle Rally competitors will get to see Baja in a way they never even knew existed. Jimmy Lewis will be designing the bike specific courses with easy navigation to rival off-road riding found anywhere in the world. Nobody will want to miss out on this race. If you are looking for serious competition in Baja, NORRA is for you. “I want riders to have a stepping stone into rally-raid events like the Nevada Rally provided for me as a young racer, and I’ve never forgotten the Baja terrain from 30 years ago. The NORRA Mexican 1000 will embody that,” says Jimmy Lewis.
Registration for the Mexican 1000 that takes place April 26th through May 4th is already open at www.norra. com NORRA’s rally format provides the rush of competition, but also allows participants to relax each evening in a unique location in Baja. You can enjoy the food, culture and incredible terrain of Baja while you race the entire length of the Peninsula. After experiencing the Mexican 1000 just once, you too will be hooked. Everything you need to know about the Mexican 1000 can be found at https://norra.com Go to the site and find out for yourself why NORRA has exploded in popularity. You can experience the same wonder and sense of achievement those pioneering NORRA thrill seekers sought in 1967 when you join us in Baja. NORRA events honor the past, while forging the future. Don’t miss out on the fun and action.
