Since its founding in 1979, the Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO) has been Singapore’s flagship orchestra, touching lives through classical music and providing the heartbeat of the cultural scene in the cosmopolitan city-state. In addition to its subscription series concerts, the orchestra is well-loved for its outdoor and community appearances, and its significant role educating the young people of Singapore. The SSO has also earned an international reputation for its orchestral virtuosity, having garnered sterling reviews for its overseas tours and many successful recordings. The SSO makes its performing home at the 1,800-seat state-of-the-art Esplanade Concert Hall. More intimate works and all outreach and community performances take place at the
673-seat Victoria Concert Hall, the home of the SSO. The orchestra performs 100 concerts a year, and its versatile repertoire spans alltime favourites and orchestral masterpieces to exciting cutting-edge premieres. Bridging the musical traditions of East and West, Singaporean and Asian musicians and composers are regularly showcased in the concert season. This has been a core of the SSO’s programming philosophy from the very beginning under Choo Hoey, who was Music Director from 1979 to 1996. Since Lan Shui assumed the position of Music Director in 1997, the SSO has performed in Europe, Asia and the United States. In May 2016 the SSO was invited to perform at the Dresden Music Festival and the Prague Spring International Music Festival. This successful five‑city tour of
Germany and Prague also included the SSO’s return to the Berlin Philharmonie after six years. In 2014 the SSO’s debut at the 120th BBC Proms in London received critical acclaim in the major UK newspapers The Guardian and Telegraph. The SSO has also performed in China on multiple occasions. Notable SSO releases under BIS include a Rachmaninov series, a Debussy disc, “Seascapes” featuring sea-themed music by Debussy, Frank Bridge, Glazunov and Zhou Long, and the first-ever cycle of Tcherepnin’s piano concertos and symphonies. The SSO has also collaborated with such great artists as Lorin Maazel, Charles Dutoit, Gennady Rozhdestvensky, Neeme Järvi, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Lang Lang, Yo-Yo Ma, Leonidas Kavakos and Gil Shaham.

A Nig h t at t he Mov ie s There have been two major portrayals of Sherlock Holmes in the media this decade: Benedict Cumberbatch in BBC’s Sherlock, and Robert Downey Jr in Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows. Both soundtracks coincidentally rely heavily on eastern European influences, with even two Romani bands featured in Hans Zimmer and Lorne Balfe’s film score for the latter. Zimmer also engaged in a more comic and spirited style of writing for this film, a pleasant change from his more predictable sound design. A slightly different take on the music for the end credits though, The End? features driving rhythms and a gypsy-inspired sound world, which has been adapted for the symphony orchestra by Bruce Fowler. The predominant musical identity of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Rey’s Theme is the first of several pieces from the Star Wars franchise heard tonight. Opening with winds and celesta, the theme begins tentatively and then expands, reflecting the movement of the camera as it pulls back to metaphorically reveal the heroic possibilities ahead for the young protagonist. John Williams remarked that “[Rey]’s theme has a musical grammar that is not heroic in the [traditional] sense… It’s kind of an adventure theme that maybe promises more than resolving itself in the most major triumphant resolution”. James Newton Howard scored all of M. Night Shyamalan’s suspense thrillers, from The Sixth Sense in 1999 to Signs, The Village and Lady in the Water in the 2000s. In The Sixth Sense, two subtle musical ideas dominate the score, as Howard masterfully builds the musical ideas in tandem with the plot and mood of the film. Fragments are slowly revealed, before coalescing into the revelatory final minutes of the film. Considered one of the greatest film music composers of the 20th century, Jerry Goldsmith was approached by Ridley Scott to write the music for Alien. A composer’s nightmare ensued. Only one of Goldsmith’s cues was used in its entirety in the finished film; the rest of his music was mangled, cut into fragments and placed around the film, interspersed with Goldsmith’s earlier score to Freud and Howard Hanson’s Second Symphony. The End Title features some of Goldsmith’s most overtly romantic music for Alien, retaining a sense of mystery while leaving out the horror and suspense elements which inform the majority of the score.
Cinema Paradiso was a complete flop at its initial release in Italy before it was shortened for international release, which resulted in it winning the Special Jury Prize at Cannes and an Academy Award for best Foreign Language Film. Ennio Morricone’s beautiful score won almost every musical award possible, except the Academy Award which went to Alan Menken’s The Little Mermaid. It has since taken a life of its own, cementing its place as one of the all-time great film scores. The Main Theme and First Youth tell of the film’s wistful and nostalgic qualities, while the famous Love Theme which underscores the emotional climax of the film was actually written by Ennio’s youngest son, Andrea. In developing The Force Awakens, Director JJ Abrams looked back to the original trilogy for inspiration and John Williams followed suit into musical history. The result was a scintillating and virtuosic brass-led fugue around Luke’s Theme in the Scherzo for X-Wings, which accompanies the climatic X-Wing assault on Starkiller Base, while the Shostakovich-styled March of the Resistance provides a grim-faced soundscape to the spiritual successor of the Rebel Alliance. In Star Wars: Attack of the Clones, John Williams composed a desperately yearning love theme for the star-crossed lovers, Anakin and Padme, as they struggle with the prohibition on personal attachment that Anakin – as a Jedi Knight – has. Across the Stars tells of their blossoming relationship, with darker undertones foreshadowing an uncertain yet ominous future for them. In the composer's own words, "the classic love stories in literature invariably describe a forbidden relationship where lovers are separated by family, cultural constraints of one kind or another, or religion. Our story is no exception in that Padme and Anakin are separated by rank and social status. Likewise, the title, "Across the Stars" suggests the timelessness of love-eternal while dropping the hint that our lovers' knot might be ill-fated and "star-crossed. As always, in matters of the heart, the outcome is time's own secret”.
Hans Zimmer’s score for Christopher Nolan’s 2014 science fiction epic, Interstellar, featured an ensemble of 34 strings, 24 woodwinds, 4 pianos and a 60-strong chorus, with an organ at its heart. The eventual sound design for the film reportedly broke the sound system in several theatres and was lampooned in many reviews. Theatregoers worldwide complained that they were unable to hear the dialogue over the long held organ chords, with some remarking that Zimmer had fallen asleep at the organ. Nolan told Zimmer, “I am going to give you an envelope with a letter in it. One page. It's going to tell you the fable at the centre of the story. You work for one day, then play me what you have written.” This resulted in a short four-minute piece for piano and organ, which Nolan called the “heart of the story” and was the genesis for the rest of the soundtrack. No Time for Caution likewise heavily features the organ in its original form, with the rest of the orchestra focusing on the rhythmic ostinatos and dramatic interjections which persist throughout the short track. Kevin Kaska’s orchestration of the track will be performed tonight. South African film composer Trevor Jones’ most popular score was for 1992’s The Last of the Mohicans. His full-bodied dramatic score for Mohicans set the tone for most of his subsequent scores. It however had a troubled genesis. Jones was initially approached to write an electronic score for the film, but director Michael Mann changed his mind late in the editing process and requested for a symphonic score. Given the time constraint, Randy Edelman was also brought in to score several scenes, and both he and Jones were acknowledged as co-composers. The three selections performed tonight were written by Trevor Jones. The Main Title, containing the soaring main theme and representing protagonist Hawkeye and his valiant actions, is based on Scottish singer-songwriter Dougie Maclean’s The Gael. The main theme is varied slightly to provide the love theme in The Kiss, before it is further transformed and elevated to lofty heights in Top of the World. Alan Silvestri’s score to Robert Zemeckis’s What Lies Beneath followed their acclaimed collaborations in the Back to the Future trilogy and Forrest Gump. What emerged, however, was a score which harkened back to Bernard Herrmann’s psychotic shrieking strings, rather than the heroic brass or feathery piano tunes of Silvestri’s famous soundtracks. Silvestri definitely took his creative cue from Zemeckis’s direction which paid homage to Alfred
Hitchcock’s legendary films, and the aggressive End Credits pays clear musical homage to Hermann’s scoring of Hitchcock’s Psycho before ending on an ominous note. John Williams’ longstanding collaboration with Steven Spielberg resulted in the almost concurrent releases of two films in late 2011, The Adventures of Tintin and War Horse. Williams took a more pastoral approach towards War Horse, evoking the great sound paintings by Copland and Vaughan Williams in the last century. Dartmoor, 1912 features a Celtic-influenced woodwind motif, before a stately Dartmoor / English Countryside theme and rollicking farming theme imbue the score with a sense of noble grandeur. Spielberg wrote of the music, "The dramatic countryside of Dartmoor has inspired John Williams to compose a score of such beauty and quiet majesty that one might think the earth was speaking through him, much as the heavens have done for nearly five decades. When I first heard John's sketches of the four central themes for War Horse, I didn't need my memories of the film to underscore the feelings I was having. The music was a stand-alone experience and it affected me deeply, as have so many of John's scores during our nearly 40-year collaboration. I feel that John has made a special gift to me of this music, which was inspired not only by my film but also by many of the picturesque settings of the poet William Wordsworth, whose vivid descriptions of the British landscape inspired much of what you are going to hear. I'm not sure what I can give John in return, other than a promise of more films to come... for as many more years as we both can imagine!" John Williams introduced a new theme in the coda of The Force Awakens. The mysterious Jedi Steps accompanies Rey’s first meeting with Luke Skywalker, before the familiar End Titles hit, with several new themes not previously featured in the suite – Kylo Ren’s menacing theme, Finn’s skittering, breathless theme, combined with Poe Dameron’s exhilarating flights through space. Hinting at her possible eventual destiny, Rey’s theme is then interwoven with the iconic Force Theme, before the Finale ends with a sprinkling of musical stardust.
