SINGAPORE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA
We’re the Singapore Symphony Orchestra – you can call us the SSO! An orchestra is made up of many musicians playing different instruments like violins, cellos, flutes, trumpets, horns and percussion - all together. Did you know that the word “symphony” means “sounding together”? That’s what the SSO does, playing music by great composers such as Mozart and Beethoven. We usually play in a concert hall, like the beautiful Victoria Concert Hall, our home. Our big concerts are held at the Esplanade Concert Hall which can seat 1,800 people. We want to show everyone how enjoyable classical music is, so sometimes we have concerts near your home, or at the Singapore Botanic Gardens - you can enjoy fresh air and nature while listening to beautiful music!
LEONARD TAN conductor
Hi, my name is Leonard Tan, and I am absolutely thrilled to be your conductor for today’s SSO concert! I have been conducting for more than 20 years, and few things bring me greater joy than sharing my joy and love of music with both the orchestra and audience! I truly believe in the transformative power of great orchestral music: its ability to inspire, comfort, heal, and most importantly, bring people together.
This is my tenth appearance with the SSO as a conductor, and I can’t thank the orchestra enough for all the wonderful music-making! Thank you for supporting the SSO, both today, and the many more to come. May the joy of music surround you always!
Hello boys and girls! My name is Uncle Bill and I’ve always loved music – even when I was a little boy, I would listen to it on a record player (we didn’t have computers and handphones back then!).
I’m so glad you have come today to join me as we listen to and play with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra. This is a very special concert. Usually, we must sit still and just listen. But this concert is for kids like us! So we can hop, sway, and even sing along sometimes with the music. However it makes you feel! So open your ears, and get ready for a lot of musical fun. TOGETHER!
LEDBETTER “UNCLE BILL” presenter
Hi I’m Jon, Principal Percussionist of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, and I’ve played everything from tin cans to slide whistles to a typewriter. Everything but the kitchen sink? Nope, I’ve played that too! I come all the way from America, where I used to spend my free time watching baseball. Now I watch my 5-year old, who is in the audience today!
Catch me in the concert hall before the show for some exciting pre-show activities!
