SINGAPORE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA Since its founding in 1979, the Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO) has been Singapore’s flagship orchestra, touching lives through classical music and providing the heartbeat of the cultural scene in the cosmopolitan city-state. In addition to its subscription series concerts, the orchestra is well-loved for its outdoor and community appearances, and its significant role educating the young people of Singapore. The SSO has also earned an international reputation for its orchestral virtuosity, having garnered sterling reviews for its overseas tours and many successful recordings. The SSO makes its performing home at the 1,800-seat state-of-the-art Esplanade Concert Hall. More intimate works, as well as outreach and community performances take place at the 673seat Victoria Concert Hall, the home of the SSO. The orchestra performs over 60 concerts a year, and its versatile repertoire spans all-time favourites and orchestral masterpieces to exciting cutting-edge premieres. Bridging the musical traditions of East and West, Singaporean and Asian musicians and composers are regularly showcased in the concert season. This has been a core of the SSO’s programming philosophy from the very beginning under Choo Hoey, who was Music Director from 1979 to 1996. Under the Music Directorship of Lan Shui from 1997 to 2019, the SSO has performed in Europe, Asia and the United States. In May 2016 the SSO was invited to perform at the Dresden Music Festival and the Prague Spring International Music Festival. This successful five‑city tour of Germany and Prague also included the SSO’s return to the Berlin Philharmonie after six years. In 2014 the SSO’s debut at the 120th BBC Proms in London received critical acclaim in the major UK newspapers The Guardian and The Telegraph. The SSO has also performed in China on multiple occasions.
In the 2020/21 concert season, the SSO welcomes renowned maestro Hans Graf as its Chief Conductor. Notable SSO releases on the BIS label include a Rachmaninoff series, a “Seascapes” album, three Debussy discs “La Mer”, “Jeux” and “Nocturnes”, and the first-ever cycle of Tcherepnin’s piano concertos and symphonies. The SSO has also collaborated with such great artists as Lorin Maazel, Charles Dutoit, Gennady Rozhdestvensky, Neeme Järvi, Gustavo Dudamel, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Diana Damrau, Martha Argerich, Lang Lang, Yo-Yo Ma, Janine Jansen, Leonidas Kavakos and Gil Shaham. The SSO is part of the Singapore Symphony Group, which also manages the Singapore Symphony Choruses, and the Singapore National Youth Orchestra. The mission of the Group is to create memorable shared experiences with music. Through the SSO and its affiliated performing groups, we spread the love for music, nurture talent and enrich our diverse communities.

# H e lp Us P la y O n Mus ic fo r a l l t i m e, th e m us ic of h o p e — During our absence from the concert halls since Circuit Breaker, you welcomed the SSO into your homes as we performed our new digital concerts for you. We are now working hard to put up live concerts in front of a live audience in the coming months. If you miss the SSO, please #HelpUsPlayOn by responding to this appeal.
“I miss the excitement of catching a live concert, online concerts aren’t quite the same…”
More than 700,000 people across Singapore enjoyed SSO concerts for free during Circuit Breaker - that’s seven times the number of people who would normally encounter the SSO in concert in a year
Every digital concert costs $25,000 more than a concert for live audience
“…my biggest heartache was foregoing Beethoven’s Gala Concert this year!”
The SSO is an arts charity and depends on donations and matching grants, which we need to survive. We need your help. Your donation unlocks matching grants that we need to sustain our digital operations. For every dollar donated, we will receive another from the Cultural Matching Fund. So your donation will make twice the difference. These are challenging times for many, but if you are able to help, please #HelpUsPlayOn and consider making a gift to the SSO. Allegro moderato Andante Rondeau. Allegro
Mozart’s violin concerti present a strange musicological problem: they were composed in a short period of time, but it is not clear what occasion prompted their creation, or who they were written for. A story is sometimes told that Mozart had been so inspired by a meeting with Haydn that he produced these five concerti in the span of half a year, but this sequence of events is more reliably attached to the six string quartets published as Opus 10, nicknamed the “Haydn Quartets”. Those came later, and are actually dedicated to Haydn. To add further to the muddle, the manuscripts of Mozart’s violin concerti had their dates tampered with: the fifth concerto had its 1775 date scratched out and replaced with 1780, and then changed back to 1775; for a long time, three other concerti were confused as Mozart’s, and given various numbers. In any case, these concerti were all composed before his likely first encounter with Haydn, though Mozart would already have been well aware of Haydn’s music long before then.
in ebullient form, and are perhaps the more difficult of the lot, with virtuosic writing involving very high solo lines. Listen out for operatic elements in this concerto: by this point, Mozart had already written a dozen operas, including the highly accomplished La finta giardiniera, and this can be heard in the way groups of instruments interact. The pair of oboes add weight to orchestral tutti, anchoring the high violin lines. A lively first movement gives way to a wonderfully expansive pastorale, in which the oboes and horns punctuate cadences and act as signal-bearers for the solo violin. The rondo-finale actually opens with the violin solo leading the theme, an especially Mozartian touch, and dances its way to an exuberant end.
What is certain about the ones that are definitely Mozart’s (Nos. 1–5) is that they show him as a confident and youthful composer with a masterful command of string technique. Mozart was a world-class keyboardist and also an accomplished violinist, although he preferred playing the viola. The violin writing in these works is brilliant, always delicately poised against the orchestral forces. The first two show Mozart

LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN (1770–1827) Symphony No. 7 in A major, Op. 92 (1811–1812) I II III IV
Poco sostenuto – Vivace Allegretto Presto Allegro con brio
Beethoven considered the Seventh Symphony to be one of his finest works. Composed in 1811–1812 while Beethoven was in the spa town of Teplice, he conducted the premiere in 1813, and the popularity of the concert was such that a repeat was arranged, and that further success ensured Beethoven financial stability from then on. The other Beethoven work in the programme, Wellington’s Victory — probably the first musical work to use artillery as a sound effect, way before Tchaikovsky — is now widely agreed to be Beethoven’s worst composition. Contemporary colleagues noted Beethoven hamming it up on the conductor’s podium. And well he should: the symphony is a longbreathed, dramatic work marshalling what compositional resources Beethoven had at that point in his career. The opening casts an optimistic light on the rest of the piece, with a strong A major giving way to a soft C major and F major glow (perhaps an allusion to his previous Pastoral Symphony) and the second movement showing unusual restraint on his part to create a sustained mysterious mood at the beginning, foreshadowing some of Schubert’s best orchestral moments. The movement turned out to be so popular it earned a place as an orchestral staple immediately, performed as a standalone piece all across Europe in the 19th century.

The Scherzo and Trio of the third movement uses a typical Beethoven touch: a simple length extension via repetition of the middle section to give it more weight in the whole structure. This allowed audiences to hear the Austrian hymn he borrowed for the trio twice, and effectively acts as a longer period of lighter music before the drama of the finale. Racing out of the starting blocks with trumpet blasts and timpani offbeats, the last movement is one of Beethoven’s best sonata forms, and remains at a forward tilt throughout its surprisingly short length. The string section of the orchestra is used as a rhythm section, driving the music forward, even through some of the most surprising harmonic moments in all of Beethoven. The lack of a lyrical contrast here is made up by the sheer energy of the orchestral writing, and even a rare use of the tripleforte dynamic in the coda. Wagner, seduced by the whirling rhythms of this irrepressible finale, called this symphony the “apotheosis of the dance”; and indeed, this symphony has never left the concert stage since its first performance.
