SINGAPORE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

Hello!

We’re the Singapore Symphony Orchestra – you can call us the SSO! An orchestra is made up of many musicians playing different instruments like violins, cellos, flutes, trumpets, horns and percussion - all together. Did you know that the word “symphony” means “sounding together”? That’s what the SSO does, playing music by great composers such as Mozart and Beethoven. We usually play in a concert hall, like the beautiful Victoria Concert Hall, our home. Our big concerts are held at the Esplanade Concert Hall which can seat 1,800 people. We want to show everyone how enjoyable classical music is, so sometimes we have concerts near your home, or at the Singapore Botanic Gardens - you can enjoy fresh air and nature while listening to beautiful music!

Hi kids!

My name is Joshua Tan, and I am absolutely thrilled to be your conductor for today’s SSO Concerts for Children concert! I’m also the Principal Conductor of the Singapore National Youth Orchestra and have conducted many orchestras all around the world - from Tokyo Metropolitan Orchestra, to Sydney Symphony Orchestra, to Mariinsky Theater Orchestra in Russia!

I enjoy conducting symphonic, operatic and ballet workssome of my favourite music to conduct are from Disney’s Fantasia, Harry Potter and Jurassic Park. I hope you’ll be inspired by the magic of today’s wonderful programme!

Hello boys and girls!

My name is Harry Wong, and I’m so glad you have come today to join me as we listen to and play with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra. Apart from hosting concerts for the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra every year, I also host the TV shows ‘Harry GorGor's Good Neighbours’ and ‘MagaSenior’ by Radio Television Hong Kong, and am one of the leading specialists in the Hong Kong music education field – some of my textbooks and methods are used in schools there today!

Music and magic have been a part of my life since I was young, and it’s my privilege to use the knowledge I have to bring joy and fun all around the world. So, keep your eyes peeled and your ears open for a lot of magical musical fun today!
