HELLO!
We are the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, or you can call us the SSO. The SSO has many musicians: some play string instruments (like violin and cello), wind instruments (like flute and trumpet) and percussion instruments (like timpani and cymbals). We often play great symphonies and concertos by famous composers like Mozart and Beethoven, and other wonderful music that we hope will touch your heart and make your life more colourful.
The SSO usually plays in a big concert hall like the Esplanade Concert Hall, which can seat 1,800 people. But the Home of the SSO is the beautiful Victoria Concert Hall, where we grew up. We want to show everyone in Singapore how beautiful classical music is, so sometimes we have fun concerts near your home. We even play at the Singapore Botanic Gardens and Gardens by the Bay, where you can enjoy fresh air and nature while listening to beautiful classical music!
LEONARD TAN conductor
My name is Leonard Tan, and I am absolutely thrilled to be your conductor for today’s SSO concert! I have been conducting for more than 20 years, and few things bring me greater joy than sharing my joy and love of music with both the orchestra and audience. I truly believe in the transformative power of great orchestral music: its ability to inspire, comfort, heal, and most importantly, bring people together.
As I shared during last year’s SSO Christmas concert, “This virus will not stop the SSO from making beautiful music for you, live!” How wonderful that we are back as a full orchestra playing for you, our beloved audience. Thank you for supporting the SSO, both today, and the many more to come. May the joy of music surround you always!
ALASDAIR MALLOY presenter
I’m your musical movie host today! I have been working as a concert presenter, percussionist, glass harmonica player, programme deviser and arranger for many years. I’ve presented a wide range of innovative family and children’s concerts across the globe, from magic and mystery to film, food and travel, and have worked closely with several of the UK’s top orchestras. I have also been invited to record as a glass harmonica specialist with acclaimed artists such as Icelandic pop star Björk, and can be heard on numerous film soundtracks; two of the Harry Potter films, the BAFTA and Oscar winning Hollywood blockbuster Gravity, and most recently Aeronauts.
I love cooking, especially outdoors cooking on my barbecue and pizza oven - and of course sailing. I am a member of a yacht racing team, competing as often as I am able to in regattas, and I enjoy yachting round the coast of southern England and round the Western isles of Scotland.

Fun Facts!
Welcome to the movies! Read on for some fun facts about the music you are about to hear, and sit back while the Singapore Symphony Orchestra performs some of the most iconic movie soundtracks.
The magical world of Harry Potter is perfectly captured in the opening melody with Hedwig’s Theme. It is played by the celesta, a keyboard instrument that looks like an upright piano, but sounds like a glockenspiel. Look out for it on the right of the stage!
The Raiders March from Raiders of the Lost Ark follows the explorer Indiana Jones as he embarks on his adventures. Imagine him traversing caves and escaping from danger, as this heroic theme plays.
One song from Frozen won the Academy Award for Best Original Song of 2013. This award is given to the best song written for a movie that year. No prizes for the correct guess - it is Let it Go!

.
All three times, the song is sung in different styles, by three different actors. Hear the different styles played by the orchestra in this arrangement!
The catchy Happy from Despicable Me 2 is written by Pharrell Williams, on his tenth attempt at a song that matches Gru’s good mood in the movie.
Many of the pieces you hear today are composed by John Williams, who has written music for Star Wars, Harry Potter, Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park, and Jaws. He has been composing for more than 70 years!
