SINGAPORE SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA Since its founding in 1979, the Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO) has been Singapore’s flagship orchestra, touching lives through classical music and providing the heartbeat of the cultural scene in the cosmopolitan city-state. In addition to its subscription series concerts, the orchestra is well-loved for its outdoor and community appearances, and its significant role educating the young people of Singapore. The SSO has also earned an international reputation for its orchestral virtuosity, having garnered sterling reviews for its overseas tours and many successful recordings. The SSO makes its performing home at the 1,800-seat state-of-the-art Esplanade Concert Hall. More intimate works, as well as outreach and community performances take place at the 673seat Victoria Concert Hall, the home of the SSO. The orchestra performs over 60 concerts a year, and its versatile repertoire spans all-time favourites and orchestral masterpieces to exciting cutting-edge premieres. Bridging the musical traditions of East and West, Singaporean and Asian musicians and composers are regularly showcased in the concert season. This has been a core of the SSO’s programming philosophy from the very beginning under Choo Hoey, who was Music Director from 1979 to 1996. Under the Music Directorship of Lan Shui from 1997 to 2019, the SSO has performed in Europe, Asia and the United States. In May 2016 the SSO was invited to perform at the Dresden Music Festival and the Prague Spring International Music Festival. This successful five‑city tour of Germany and Prague also included the SSO’s return to the Berlin Philharmonie after six years. In 2014 the SSO’s debut at the 120th BBC Proms in London received critical acclaim in the major UK newspapers The Guardian and The Telegraph. The SSO has also performed in China on multiple occasions.
In the 2020/21 concert season, the SSO welcomes renowned maestro Hans Graf as its Chief Conductor. Notable SSO releases on the BIS label include a Rachmaninoff series, a “Seascapes” album, three Debussy discs “La Mer”, “Jeux” and “Nocturnes”, and the first-ever cycle of Tcherepnin’s piano concertos and symphonies. The SSO has also collaborated with such great artists as Lorin Maazel, Charles Dutoit, Gennady Rozhdestvensky, Neeme Järvi, Gustavo Dudamel, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Diana Damrau, Martha Argerich, Lang Lang, Yo-Yo Ma, Janine Jansen, Leonidas Kavakos and Gil Shaham. The SSO is part of the Singapore Symphony Group, which also manages the Singapore Symphony Choruses, and the Singapore National Youth Orchestra. The mission of the Group is to create memorable shared experiences with music. Through the SSO and its affiliated performing groups, we spread the love for music, nurture talent and enrich our diverse communities.

Modal melodies and harmonies for string quartet call to mind the 20th century neoclassical movement, and indeed, Hajime Komatsu’s folksong suites sound like the arrangements of, say, Igor Stravinsky and Benjamin Britten. Four short pieces make up this particular set; the melodies are treated with an eye toward using the range of colour and register available to the string quartet. The first, Yagibushi, is an exuberant hatthrowing dance from central Japan. The cowherding melody that follows, Nanbu Ushioi Uta, has been reharmonised so thoroughly it would not sound out of place beside Vaughan Williams and Holst. Otemoyan arose as a drinking song and spilled onto the streets of Kumamoto, whereas Aizu Bandaisan paints a picture of the volcano (Mount Bandai) with bright Lydian-Phrygian harmonies and pulsing rhythms that sound like Piazzolla. JOE HISAISHI (b. 1950) Merry-Go-Round of Life from Howl’s Moving Castle (arr. Jen Mathers) One Summer’s Day from Spirited Away (arr. Adam White) Summer from Kikujiro (arr. Adam White) Joe Hisaishi’s scores for Studio Ghibli are justifiably legendary, and his knack for producing incredibly memorable theme tunes has cemented his place among film music greats. His association with anime has often obscured the fact that he was fully classically trained, starting with the Suzuki method on the violin and eventually going on to major in composition at Kunitachi College. Arrangements of his music abound for all sorts of combinations, and the string quartet repertoire has also benefited from Hisaishi’s proximity to classical music. Both Hisaishi’s music and Ghibli films have always enjoyed immense popularity in Singapore. You would be hard-pressed to find someone who doesn’t know the Howl’s Moving Castle theme song! The Ghibli films that Hisaishi has written for are often whimsical affairs with surprisingly deep storylines, and the music often fits this theme: on the surface, they are catchy, singable tunes, yet with a depth of feeling and a sureness of harmonic touch that mark these compositions as uniquely Hisaishi’s. For example, the original movie soundtrack has One Summer’s Day bookend the entirety of Spirited Away, and the final appearance of the song includes fragments of other musical themes, as if the events of the film have changed the music as much as it has changed the life of the main character Chihiro. His work also extends outside the Ghibli sphere, however, and Summer, from the movie Kikujiro, is a prime example of that: perfectly balanced on the fine line between nostalgia and hope.

Hisaishi treats his own music with great freedom as well, not shying from making re-arrangements when he pleases. One Summer’s Day was originally birthed as a piano and orchestra piece. The gentle piano sprinkles that it opens with are instantly recognizable to fans. Lyrics were added after the film was released, giving rise to the song “The Name of Life” (Inochi no Namae). This gives leeway to the two arrangers on tonight’s programme to flex 18

their compositional muscles, and while Jen Mathers treats Merry-Go-Round of Life with a light hand, Adam White’s editorial hand smoothes over some of Hisaishi’s choice dissonances in One Summer’s Day, arriving at a peaceful meditative place. White also preserves the all-pizzicato opening in Summer, which stands out in the string quartet as a very unusual sound, and includes sparkly, virtuosic passages for all.
LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN (1770–1827) String Quartet in D major, Op. 18 No. 3 (1798–1800) I II III IV
Allegro Andante con moto Allegro Presto
Beethoven’s Op. 18 No. 3 stands out for how gentle it is compared to much of his early music. Its shy opening sounds like a Haydn slow movement, and the Haydn influence is easily audible in the rest of the quartet. Moments of genuine humour sparkle throughout, and the first violin dominates in the flowing first movement. Youthful excitement lies under the calm surface of the slow movement, which is actually constructed as a rondo: a form much more typical of finales! Beethoven’s more searching chromaticism is a technique he would later refine in the Second Symphony, but the harmonic contrasts here are wide-ranging and dramatic.
this elegance by rushing headlong into ambiguous harmonic territory, and D major takes a while to be firmly established. The skill in Beethoven’s part-writing is more evident here, as the players trade phrases of unexpectedly varying lengths, and, despite the cheeky pianissimo ending, the movement bubbles with joy and energy throughout. Programme notes by Thomas Ang
The Scherzo returns to much simpler territory, almost Classical in its poise, though as usual with Beethoven there is a liberal dusting of sforzando markings to add excitement. The finale totally upends

LUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN Ode to Joy (arr. Avik Chari) Beethoven’s Ode to Joy is a vibrant piece – a celebration of music as well as an anthem of protest. It’s played in the last movement of his Ninth and final symphony. The orchestral version uses Beethoven's technique of “developing variation”, where he constantly repeats the melody, growing it with countermelodies, harmonisations and instruments. It’s an interesting piece to approach as an arranger and I had to ask myself – how do I depict this dramatic change in forces with just a string quartet? I decided to start the piece much slower, at half of the original and take time to explore the nuances of this beautiful melody. The piece slowly grows – adding texture until we reach a more lush, Beethoven-esque style. This doesn’t last long however, the work quickly grows larger, almost till the point where the melody can’t sustain the ensemble anymore, and countermelodies pop up to help it get back home. I hope this arrangement shows how we can start a journey by taking it slow, and appreciate the little things in life. Eventually we may reach a point where we can sustain our joy and love for music and celebration, regardless of the challenges – from mild annoyances and distractions to hardships.

Avik Chari (b. 1995) Avik Chari is a composer and sound designer obsessed with non-linear and interactive media.
