Welcome to the 24 / 25 concert season
Kenneth Kwok Chief Executive Officer
Singapore Symphony Group
As we enter Singapore’s 60th year in 2025, we ask ourselves: what does it mean to be a national orchestra?
Firstly, we believe it means offering our audiences world-class symphonic music concerts right here at home in Singapore. Over the next few months, the SSO, which has been placed on world’s best orchestras lists in recent years for our artistic excellence, will present canonical works such as Beethoven’s Ninth and Mahler’s Second under the baton of our Music Director, Maestro Hans Graf, and perform alongside living legends like Maxim Vengerov, Hélène Grimaud, Steven Isserlis and Daniil Trifonov.
Secondly, a national orchestra should celebrate our own Singapore talents, many of whom have also achieved international recognition. The SSO is proud to feature the likes of conductors Kahchun Wong and Leonard Tan, and soloists Victoria Li, Jade Tan, Toby Tan and Adrian Tang, as well as new works by Joyce Koh and Cultural Medallion recipient Kelly Tang this season.
Every year, our National Day Concert showcases new compositions by Singaporean composers, and it has always been our intention to extend the lives of these original pieces beyond the annual concert. This season, we are thrilled to not only be bringing back Koh Cheng Jin’s Luciola singapura (which we premiered at the NDC in 2021) in October, but we will also be travelling with the award-winning work to Australia.
Yes, with the Esplanade Concert Hall under renovation from September to March, the SSO is taking the opportunity to fly Singapore’s flag overseas, and will be making our Australian debut in February with performances in Brisbane, Melbourne and the iconic Sydney Opera House, led by Maestro Hans Graf.
Speaking of Australia, another highlight this year is the SSO-MSO side-by-side with our friends, the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, in August in Singapore; and we are particularly excited to be presenting Carmina Burana with a combined chorus of over 200 singers from Australia and Singapore. This marks the first joint performance of the Singapore Symphony Choruses and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra Chorus.
Indeed, celebrating our national talents includes the participants of our Singapore Symphony Choruses and Singapore National Youth Orchestra. You won’t want to miss the SNYO concert in March which will be conducted by Maestro Hans Graf himself, an experience that I’m sure will leave an indelible impression on both the young musicians and our audiences.
Such memory-making is our mission as a company. We hope every concert will be something our audiences remember — and we are mindful that we have a diversity of audiences looking for different things. This is why we will also continue to stage our much-loved children’s concerts and free outdoor and community events, as well as our annual Christmas Concert. Led by SSO Associate Conductor Rodolfo Barráez, this year’s programme features the first part of Handel’s Messiah, in response to public demand.
With so much on offer, we hope you will find something that excites you as you browse through our programmes. Whether you decide to come by yourself to escape from all the noise out there in the world, or together with your friends or family as a special night out; whether you are a regular concertgoer or stepping into the Victoria Concert Hall or Esplanade Concert Hall for the first time, what matters is that when you join us — an unforgettable musical experience awaits you!
We’d like to think 100,000 live audiences and 6 million online viewers can’t be wrong.
The Singapore Symphony Orchestra and I invite you to share with us many beautiful, extraordinary, and exciting evenings in the new 2024/25 season.
There will be two towering works of historic dimension opening and closing the season: Beethoven’s Ninth starting a century of Romanticism, and Mahler’s Second ending it, and opening doors to the heights and abysses of the 20th century. It is no coincidence that they are both including the Chorus in a similar and majestic way.
We are proud to have for these two highlights our own Singapore Symphony Choruses, a vital component of our great orchestra. They have delivered many memorable performances of great beauty and depth in recent years.
During this season we will also have the pleasure to hear an impressive array of important soloists, including remarkable and highly individual pianists like Hélène Grimaud, Ingrid Fliter, Behzod Abduraimov and Daniil Trifonov — and last, but by far not least, our dear friend Albert Tiu who will play a stunning and extravagant piece by Paul Hindemith with our Brass Section.
We will also welcome again violinist Sayaka Shoji, this time playing Brahms, the most symphonic of all violin concertos, after her wonderful and intimate rendering of Schumann’s concerto a while ago; and another bright talent, our glorious and lovely star Chloe Chua sharing the stage with our own outstanding Ng Pei-Sian, SSO’s Principal Cellist, in Brahms’s Double Concerto.
One concert will bring a double bill: the first part showing all facets of brass, from soft and lyrical to brilliant and festive — including Albert Tiu’s solo in Hindemith’s rare Konzertmusik for piano, brass and two harps. The second part will feature the strings, playing Rodion Shchedrin’s wild, boisterous, tragic and deep translation of Bizet’s Carmen into a new and attractively spicy language, including all sorts of percussion for surprising and virtuosic effects. He wrote this piece as a gift to his wife, the great Russian Prima Ballerina Maya Plisetskaya who brought it to world fame.
My very special wish is to make you curious about a thing we all seem to know well but which in fact is very rare: a version of Shakespeare’s Midsummer Night’s Dream — playing really ALL the music Mendelssohn has written for it (usually never heard
on the concert stage), spoken and acted by the enchanting Canadian actress Maureen Thomas. She will incorporate all the characters, with grace and humour, showing unknown sides of the theatrical genius of this elegant composer who gives new life and colours to Shakespeare’s hilarious and sometimes tragic fairy tale.
We can also announce with delight that the SSO will resume its touring activity with concerts in Australia this season, representing the pride of Singapore around the world.
Have a look at all these offerings and come to hear and share with us our love of the beauty of music.
As Nietzsche said, “Without music, life would be a mistake.”
Touching lives through classical music
Since its founding in 1979, the Singapore Symphony Orchestra (SSO) has been Singapore’s flagship orchestra, touching lives through classical music and providing the heartbeat of the cultural scene with its 44week calendar of events.
In addition to its subscription series concerts, the orchestra is wellloved for its outdoor and community appearances, and its significant role educating the young people of Singapore through its school programmes. The SSO has also earned an international reputation for its orchestral virtuosity, having garnered sterling reviews for its overseas tours and many successful recordings. In 2021, the SSO clinched third place in the prestigious Orchestra of the Year Award by Gramophone. In 2022, BBC Music Magazine named the SSO as one of the 23 best orchestras in the world.

In July 2022, the SSO appointed renowned Austrian conductor Hans Graf as its Music Director, the third in the orchestra’s history after Lan Shui (1997–2019) and Choo Hoey (1979–1996). Prior to this, Hans Graf served as Chief Conductor from 2020.
The orchestra performs over 60 concerts a year, and its versatile repertoire spans all-time favourites and orchestral masterpieces to exciting cutting-edge premieres. Bridging the musical traditions of East and West, Singaporean and Asian musicians and composers are regularly showcased in the concert season. The SSO makes its performing home at the 1,800-seat state-of-the-art Esplanade Concert Hall. More intimate works, as well as outreach and community performances take place at the 673-seat Victoria Concert Hall, the Home of the SSO.
Beyond Singapore, the SSO has performed in Europe, Asia and the United States. In May 2016 the SSO was invited to perform at the Dresden Music Festival and the Prague Spring International Music Festival. This successful five-city tour of Germany and Prague also included the SSO’s second performance at the Berlin Philharmonie. In 2014, the SSO’s debut at the 120th BBC Proms in London received praise in major UK newspapers The Guardian and The Telegraph. The SSO has also performed in China on multiple occasions. In the 2024/25 season, the SSO will perform in a three-city tour of Australia.
The SSO has released more than 50 recordings, with over 30 on the BIS label. Recent critically acclaimed albums include Herrmann’s Wuthering Heights (Chandos) and Scriabin — Poems of Ecstasy and Fire (BIS). With Singaporean violinist Chloe Chua, the SSO has recorded the Four Seasons, as well as the Butterfly Lovers Violin Concerto, and a Mozart Violin Concerto cycle with Hans Graf to be released by Pentatone Records in the 2024/25 season. The SSO also leads the revival and recording of significant

works such as Kozłowski’s Requiem, Ogerman’s Symbiosis (after Bill Evans) and violin concertos by Robert Russell Bennett and Vernon Duke.

The Group’s vision is to be a leading arts organisation that engages, inspires and reflects Singapore through musical excellence. Our mission is to create memorable shared experiences with music. Through the SSO and its affiliated performing groups, we spread the love for music, nurture talent and enrich our diverse communities.
Hans Graf
MUSIC DIRECTOR
Armed with a spirit of musical curiosity and discovery, creative programming and his commanding presence on stage, Austrian conductor Hans Graf has raised orchestras to new heights while winning audiences young and old alike. With Hans Graf, “a brave new world of music-making under inspired direction” (The Straits Times) began at the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, where he was appointed Chief Conductor from the 2020/21 season, and Music Director from the 2022/23 season.
Graf was formerly Music Director of the Houston Symphony, Calgary Philharmonic, Orchestre National Bordeaux Aquitaine, Basque National Orchestra and the Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg. He frequently appears with all major orchestras in North America, including Cleveland, Detroit, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Montreal, Toronto, and a special friendship with the Boston Symphony developed over 20 years.
In Europe, Graf has conducted the Vienna Philharmonic, Vienna Symphony, Leipzig Gewandhaus, DSO Berlin, Dresden, Royal Concertgebouw, Rotterdam, the Oslo, Stockholm, the Hallé, London Philharmonic, London Symphony, the Royal Philharmonic, St Petersburg Philharmonic and Russian National, the Bavarian, Danish and Netherlands Radio Symphony Orchestras, Budapest Festival Orchestra and many others. He is also a regular guest with the leading orchestras of Asia and Australia.
A frequent conductor at the Salzburg Festival since 1983, Graf has also participated in the prestigious festivals of Maggio Musicale, Aix-en-Provence in Europe, and in the US, the Tanglewood, Blossom, Aspen, and the Bravo! Vail Valley Music Festivals.

Hans Graf’s extensive discography is found on the EMI, Orfeo, CBC, Erato, Capriccio and JVC labels and includes all the symphonies of Mozart and Schubert, the complete orchestral works of Henri Dutilleux (recorded under the composer’s supervision), and the world-premiere recording of Zemlinsky’s Es war einmal. Graf’s semi-staged production of Berg’s Wozzeck with the Houston Symphony won the GRAMMY and ECHO Klassik awards for best opera recording.
Further albums include Hindemith’s complete works for viola and orchestra with Tabea Zimmermann/ DSO Berlin (Myrios), Orff’s Carmina Burana with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, and with the Russian National Orchestra, Rachmaninoff Piano Concertos with Jae-Hyuck Cho and three Russian trumpet concertos with Paul Merkelo.
With the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, Hans Graf has completed pioneering recording projects such as the music of Paul von Klenau and Józef Kozłowski’s Requiem. A highly anticipated cycle of Mozart Violin Concertos with Chloe Chua, and Stravinsky Concertos with violinist He Ziyu and pianist Alexei Volodin have also been recorded under his baton, for release.
Born in Austria, Graf studied conducting with Franco Ferrara, Sergiu Celibidache and Arvid Jansons. He is Professor Emeritus for Orchestral Conducting at the Universität Mozarteum in Salzburg. The “Songs of Beuren” is based on 13th century songs celebrating all manner of life’s pursuits — from sacred prayers to bawdy tavern songs, reincarnated through a modern orchestra in kaleidoscopic colour and rhythmic vivacity, amplifying its vibrant and earthy humour. It’s a stunning experience that’s absolutely not to be missed, as is the lineup of fanfares, firebirds and flamenco in this exciting collaboration.

“A violinist like Maxim is born only once in a hundred years,” declared his violin teacher. The Singapore Symphony also presents Emergence by the doyen of Singapore composers Kelly Tang, while Sibelius’s magnificent Second Symphony forges an incandescent conclusion to this concert conducted by Finnish maestro and former SSO Principal Guest Conductor Okko Kamu.

Pulcinella was my discovery of the past, the epiphany through which the whole of my late work became possible. The idea of bringing to life the universal comic character from Neapolitan commedia dell’arte tradition in music fascinated Stravinsky. The result was an enchanting collection of ballet numbers filled with nostalgic neoclassical charm and the pungent wit of 20th century modernism. The Renaissance-inspired Fantasia for Strings by Henze and the music of Haydn, the paragon of the Classical era, add to this theme.

She performs Ravel’s scintillating Piano Concerto in G, a work of jazz-infused vitality and iridescent beauty. Also illuminating the stage is Singaporean composer Koh Cheng Jin’s Luciola singapura — a multi-awardwinning SSO commission evoking the Singapore firefly. First performed at the SSO National Day Concert 2021, hear it again this October played by a full orchestra with the piece’s distinctive yangqin part. Meanwhile, with the threat of deadly censure from the Stalinist authorities hanging over his head, Shostakovich outwardly called his Fifth Symphony “a Soviet artist’s reply to just criticism.” The truth of these two masterpieces is monumentally evident otherwise — witness them in the expert hands of critically acclaimed German pianist Gerhard Oppitz and trail-blazing Singaporean conductor Kahchun Wong.

Combining consummate technique with rare sensitivity and depth, Daniil Trifonov’s performances are a perpetual source of awe. “Trifonov has everything and more. What he does with his hands is both technically and musically unbelievable. And then there is his touch — so gifted with tenderness and at the same time he has the demonic element. I have never heard anything like this before,” said none other than the legendary Martha Argerich. Hans Graf leads the SSO with Trifonov as he performs Rachmaninoff’s virtuosic Piano Concerto No. 4, framed by the genteel masquerade of Stravinsky’s ballet music for Le Baiser de la fée and Debussy’s musical impressions of Iberian festivity, the scent of night and the brilliance of springtime.
