CHOICE Our first assigment in 351 was to listen to a Radiolab podcast relating to “choice”. After listening, we were assigned to create a visual piece in response to the podcast. After listening to the Radiolab Podcast I began to have an influx of thoughts in my sketchbook. In the podcast they discuss the idea of choice/ decision making and how we as humans have a complex process in making choices. I took the podcast and interpreted the hearing as some sort of a scientific study on how one’s brain comes to the resolution of choice making. One section that resonated with me was the study done with cake vs. fruit/ memory capacity and the idea of emotional vs. rational decisions; I realized the brain activity to be fascinating and how the conscious and subconscious have such an influence to the psychological part of one’s brain. Conversely, I was intrigued to hear the statement near the end of the podcast on how the conscious will is only an allusion and made me question our decision-making and how uncontrollable it is.

After we found out about our assignment, I sketched out a quick mind map. As I was mapping out my thoughts, I started to see a pattern; most of my ideas revolved around the brain. You can see on the map, there are diverse content in relationship to ‘choice’. My next steps were sketching out visuals.

EMOTIONAL VS. RATIONAL The cognitive process plays an important role when you are deciding. The two major processes your brain deals with is the emotional and rational thought process to your decision. The sketches below are just some ideas that came into my mind while listening to the “cake vs. fruit� discussion. The use of seesaw represents the teetering of the two cognitive processes. BRAIN NERVES/CELLS/ NUMBERS/CONNECT THE DOTS? I was thinking about brain and the relationship to a nervous system *interconnective/ connecting or capable of connecting with something else or with each other. The idea of connecting and that infinite relationship interested me. I investigated further onto online and found some interesting things that helped me to think of my visual. After finding that information, I experimented with lines and the interconnectivity idea by the endless thought process when making a decision.

THOUGHTS: form conceived in the mind, rather than the forms perceived through the senses. Thoughts are the procestses by which concepts are perceived and manipulated. CONNECT THE DOTS: In adults, the phrase connect the dots can be used as a metaphor to illustrate an ability to associate one idea with another, to find the big picture. -wikipedia

My intention for the choice poster all originated with a quote from the podcast, “The conscious will is only an allusion and made me question our decision-making.” This made me focus on the choices that one makes when faced with decisions and to question if it’s the right one. I decided to map out my thought process and somehow work with a mind map. This resulted in my final piece, a superhighway of my conscious thoughts. In my poster there are a plethora of random thoughts when I order food, and all the thoughts are connected together with lines showing the different tangents that resulted from a thought. The act of connecting all the thoughts gives off a sense of an overwhelming feeling to the viewer and makes them realize that this goes on in everyone’s head. From last week to this week, I tweaked my poster given the suggestions in class. The first thing you will notice is that scale of the poster; I increased the size of the poster while keeping the map the same size. I also changed the coloring around due to the disconnect between the color choice of a thought. Originally the important thoughts were in blue while the least important thoughts were in yellow, people felt as if the color should we swapped around and emphasis the important thoughts in yellow (highlighter). I also changed the sizing of the circles for the important thoughts to be even bigger and more noticeable. And lastly I got narrowed down the yellow/important thoughts so there would be fewer of them.


Final version of my poster. /changed size, increased to A1 paper size. /changed the title to “superhighway of my conscious thoughts� /brought the cirlces forward.

Over the summer break we were assigned to read “The Creative Habit” by Twyla Tharp. Tharp shares her thoughts about her dance experience and relates it to a creative process. The book was interesting as it challenged us to try new things and view things from a new perspective. For the group project, we were assigned into groups with a specific chapter from Tharp’s book. My group, including Amy and Rachel, was assigned chapter 7, “Accidents will happen”.

Because computer screens are important to the computer science students, we felt like it would be appropriate for our form to be 4D. This idea is a computer screen saver. The idea of getting rid of extraneous information by moving the mouse was the concept. However there are quite a few things not working in this idea. First and the main reason this idea is weak is because it’s just a screen saver; once the user moves its mouse the message goes away. This is unmemorable and bland.

This idea came about after thinking about how we could still integrate a non-on screen element. The saying is taken from The Art of Unix Programming, meaning if you don’t need it throw it out. The form would be a sticker and be stuck under a computer programmer’s mouse. With the sticker under the mouse, the “EXTRANEOUS INFORMATION” screen saver would be on the screen. The whole idea was to try to make the screen saver more memorable. So the screen saver would turn on and when the person tries to get rid of it, the sticker on the bottom of the mouse doesn’t allow it to go away. So then the person would check the bottom of the computer and would see this message / saying. Thoughts: DON’T MESS UP WITH EQUIPMENT.

The user must match the center puzzle correctly in order to get to their computer. The user can delete photos to clear up space and make it more manageable. There are 50+ photos along with 4 correct puzzle pieces. If they find that piece then they have access to their computer. The purpose of having multiple pieces represents extraneous information, to get to the core message; they have to delete random pieces they don’t need.

FINAL We took all the feedback and redefined the form. The screen saver is more tech-gadget-app like, something that we find appealing to computer science majors. We made the center puzzle area black because we felt like it needed contrast against the white columns. We made a few with different sayings because we questioned how challenging it was for someone to constantly use the same screen saver. Lastly, we added a timer to the bottom of the screen. The timer is set to 30 seconds, and if the person does not solve the puzzle within that time frame, more puzzle pieces being to pop up. We believe we made a huge stride from our original idea and concept to where the final piece stands. We wanted something that resonated with the audience not only visually but also conceptually. I think the using phrases from their vernacular was a great idea as it pulled everything together.

Revised portrait project: As I received feedback, I decided to change my portrait project. The design did not convay the personality of my inteviee, as it seemed like a social comentary more than a potrait. For this version, I was playing around with the quote “you can great our own rules�.I saw this graffiiti on the photo where my interviee was standing and it related to quote. The whole mentality of breaking the rules and doing something new represents Sterling’s personality. I really liked the idea of taking things and adjusting it, making it your own. I felt like by cutting up the photos into fragments was not doing the coventinal way and adds a sense of mystery in getting through to know this person.

Project question: How can digitally based social networking be just as engaging off a computer screen? What is the project about? This project is about redefining the way we could social network out of its original context (computer screen) - specifically using an alternative digital method, like tangible/ personal objects. Who is the audience? People who have interest in social networking and digital gadgets Of what value is the project to them? It allows others to connect with a specific group of people through a different medium What is your intention? entertain, redefine In what design forms could your project be realized? ·

A watch like form. People will be able to connect through this watch-like gadget by exchanging their special “code”. One can send messages/alerts to each other. Solar powerered

Digital bracelet with the functionality of socializing with others

Clip on receiver (can clip onto shirt/jacket/bag/etc) and then someone with a special device can comment about you or ask you questions, etc

Headphones integrating the ability to hear other updates through the headpiece. It would also somehow integrate a music playlist for others to see what you’re listening to, your interest in music genre, and see what others are listening to

Shoes that leaves imprints of your message. Update your status through a special device, then the bottom of the shoes will configure the message

Small toy-like digital camera. This will have no lcd on the back, delete nor see what the photos look like (similar to film camera). It will have a set number of exposures one can take before having to export the photos. When the camera is full, one must take it to one of the many kiosks around the city and upload the photos. The kiosk will be available for everyone to see.
