Bathing once a month works for most dogs.

THICK COAT

OILY COAT

SHORT-HAIRED COAT

WATER REPELLENT COAT

Many short-haired breeds with smooth coats, such as Beagles and Weimaraners, do just fine with less frequent baths.

Water-repellent coats, such as Golden Retrievers and Great Pyrenees, should be bathed less often so as to preserve their natural oils.

Dogs with thick, double coats such as Samoyeds, Malamutes, and other Northern breeds do best with fewer baths and a lot of extra brushing.

Dogs with an oily coat, like Basset Hounds, may need bathing as frequently as oil buildup can cause skin issues.

1

Take a nice long walk first. Many dogs naturally enjoy a dip in the water when they’re feeling hot and exhausted after exercise, so use those natural instincts to your advantage. Also, your dog will have less energy to fight the process. Bring a positive attitude. If you’ve experienced resistance from your dog at bath time again and again, your body language and energy likely communicates to your dog what an ordeal this is going to be before she even knows what you’re going to do together! You may be surprised to find how much of a difference it can make to approach the bath with calm, assertive energy.

2

Brushing helps remove everyday dirt, dander, and allergens from your dog’s coat. These all contribute to a stinky dog. As a bonus, the more you brush your dog (outside is best), the more you’re preventing all that fur from showing up inside your house! TIP: The Furminator is quite possibly the best dog brush ever invented!

3

Dog skin is different from ours, and hot water can burn dogs more easily. Bath water should never be hotter than what you would run for a human baby. Keep it even cooler for large-breed dogs, who can easily overheat.

4

There ar many different types of shampoo in every pet stores. Be aware that it is best to use dog shampoo, not people shampoo. It’s less drying to their skin than our shampoo. Like us, dogs may have a preference of what kind of shampoo that works best for them. There are three main types of shampoos, deodorizing, deshdding, and allergenic shampoos. Each shampoo can be beneficial to your dog in every way. Be sure to talk with your veterinarian to make sure your dog’s skin is comfortable and healthy. RINSE WELL.

Any soap left in his or her fur can irritate your dog’s skin once he or she dry.

AIR DRY.

Hot air from a human blow-dryer is too hot for their skin. Either air-dry or use a blow-dryer designed for dogs.

It is never too late to start brushing your dog’s teeth. Good oral health is important in the overall cleanliness of your dog. No one wants to be around bad dog breath. Start by rubbing your dog’s teeth with your bare finger at random times when you’re both relaxed. Soon, add a small dab of dog toothpaste on your finger, then start rubbing your dog’s teeth with that. (Trust me, dogs love doggie toothpaste!). Eventually, switch from using your bare finger to using a finger brush with dog-friendly toothpaste on it. This is the most effective way of brushing your dog’s teeth and keeping their breath smelling fresh. Ideally, you’ll want to brush your dog’s teeth at least once a week. Dental chews are an easy way to maintain clean teeth, but monitoring the fruits and veggies can help as well.

6

Follow up with abundant praise, petting, or playing. Many damp dogs love to vent thier frustration over bath time by playing exuberant tug-of-war with the bath towel or just running away with it when it’s all over.

7

Â? Â? Â? The longer the time in between washings, the more your dog’s bedding starts to smell like “dogâ€?. If the place where your dog spends much of his or her time has a doggie smell to it, then you can bet your dog smells too. Clean them all! Their bed, their toys, their blankets.
