unning has never been more popular than today – and for good reason, because no matter the distance, setting, style, or age – running is always an enjoyable and inclusive sport. Even kids today are showing more interest in the sport as a younger crowd is seen at the starting lines of local running events. Amisha Ann Puri, a 12-year-old runner, rugby player and Sun & Sand Sports ambassador, knows the joys of running.
WHAT HAS PLAYING SPORTS TAUGHT YOU? I’ve learned to never give up and always chase your dreams. I’ve made a lot of friends through sports because they share the same passion that I do and it’s also good to have a team player that’s one of your best friends. WHAT ARE YOUR OTHER RUNNING PLANS? To go to America and other countries and do a lot of running! WHAT ADVICE CAN YOU GIVE OTHER KIDS WHO WANT TO GET INTO RUNNING AND SPORTS? It makes me feel very proud to be a Sun & Sand Sports ambassador because I can show younger people the technique of how to do hurdles and running. I suggest you get your homework done first, or any activity you have to do first. For your running, never give up and you have to get the balance correct between your speed and weight.
Amisha got into the sport at age three and has enjoyed it ever since because running and hurdling keeps her healthy, fit and ignites her passion. The Indian-English national enjoys other sports too and has been awarded Netball Player Of The Year and Rugby Player Of The Season – and names tennis superstar Serena Williams as one of her sports heroes. Running also requires discipline and as a student of Dubai English Speaking College, Amisha shares how she finds balance between sports and school. WHAT’S YOUR TRAINING SCHEDULE LIKE DURING SCHOOL DAYS? My training schedule will be running every morning because it’s cooler. And I usually do long distances with my dog – I run around the block with her. I usually train at school three days a week. On the weekends I do a lot of running because it’s not interfering with my homework or my friends or other activities.

IN THE LEAGUE OF LEGENDS OMAR AL DURI TRAINING AND FOOTBALL TIPS & BOOT REVIEWS Nine years of coaching in the UAE has proven Omar Al Duri’s passion and commitment to football and fitness. He started building his career from the age of 19 and is currently a FIFA-accredited coach. After earning his degree in Sport and Exercise Science and coaching in the UK, Omar moved to the UAE to train footballers and mobilise the local community towards a healthier lifestyle. “I didn’t always know I’d get into coaching,” he said. “But my love for the game and a little bit of a push from my coaches gave me insight on football being deeper than just a 90-minute game. From that point, I started to open my eyes to different things such as tactics and strategy. It made me believe that there was much more to the game and I was obsessed by that.” As an awarded international coach, he worked as the physical trainer for the Ghana Football Association team for the Under-20s in preparation for the Africa Cup of Nations in Senegal and physical trainer for the U20 World Cup in New Zealand. The Sun & Sand Sports ambassador has his own women’s football team and serves as director at the Ahdaaf Football Academy.
Omar has worked with high-level athletes and international teams and his expert advice for all aspiring footballers in the region is simple: “Honestly, especially for youngsters nowadays watching all these superstars on television, my advice is to work hard. Stick to the plan and try to stay on your track, not to compare yourself to anyone else.” Another important tip is to find the right shoe for you. WHEN AND HOW DID YOU FIRST GET INTO SWIMMING? I first got involved when I was five years old. I started watching the Olympics, then my dad told me to try swimming. I started with three sessions per week.
wimming is a great workout and it’s also an important life skill to have. It doesn’t only engage your legs in exercise, but also uses your upper body, arms, back and core to improve strength and promote heart and lung health. Studies also show that submersion in water makes it a more “relaxing” type of exercise and since your body doesn’t work much against gravity there’s a sense of weightlessness even when the body is working doubly hard while swimming. Teaching children water safety and the basics of swimming at an early age can save lives because good and progressive habits can provide them swim skills that will last a lifetime. Adam Kandil proves that age is irrelevant when it comes to fitness and sports. At 10 years old he is already a top-ranked swimmer who has competed in local and international competitions in the UK, bringing home numerous medals. This year he also took home one silver and two gold medals for an aquathlon. Out of the water he loves basketball, serves as the Captain of the Under 11 squad at Gems Wellington Academy and won best player trophy for 2017. He also plays in the school’s football team. We caught up with Adam, who despite his busy weekly training and non-stop pursuit of fun sports, still finds time to focus on his school work.
WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT SWIMMING? You get to socialise with your friends and there are lots of health benefits. I met a lot of friends, because you get to train with them every single day, and they want to achieve the same goal as you. WHAT’S YOUR TRAINING SCHEDULE LIKE DURING SCHOOL DAYS? Two hours of swimming every Sunday, Wednesday and Thursday. One and a half hours on Mondays and 45 minutes on Fridays. I usually train at GEMS International School and Wellington in Al Khail, GEMS World Academy and GEMS Nations Academy. HOW DO YOU BALANCE SCHOOLWORK AND OTHER ACTIVITIES? When I’m at swimming I forget everything about school so I can concentrate on swimming. When I’m at school I forget everything about swimming. My family and friends support me by coming to my training sessions and competitions to cheer me on. WHAT CHALLENGES HAVE YOU FACED IN THIS SPORT AND WHAT DID YOU LEARN FROM THE EXPERIENCE? When I was younger I was always winning, but this year someone else came and started beating me. I felt really mad because I hadn’t been beaten all my life, so I worked really hard and now we’re at the same level. The most important life lesson I learned in this sport is you don’t always have to win. When you’re down, just get your head up and train harder. WHO’S YOUR SPORTS HERO? Michael Phelps. He’s influenced me and he’s the most decorated Olympian today. WHAT ADVICE CAN YOU GIVE OTHER KIDS WHO WANT TO GET INTO SWIMMING AND OTHER SPORTS? When you’re doing school, concentrate on that. And when you’re training for your sport, concentrate on that.

HAMILTON AQUATICS This season, Hamilton Aquatics Dubai is inviting everyone to swim safely and enjo y the water with their summer swimming programme. Hamilton Aquatics – one of the top swimming academies in the region is offering an extensive range of classes for all ages and abilities starting July until September 7th 2017. Progra mmes include Adult and Child lessons, Learn to Swim lessons, Rookie Lifeguards, Strokes & Skills clinics, and Squads.
M&S is a sports coaching and edu cation provider based in UAE. Teachers and coaches tailor their practice and take a personalised approach so every child’s individual needs are met. This also helps students to maximise their time and training . The classes are led by coaches who will work with and successfully guide swimmers from their first swim meet to international level competition. ULTIMATE ATHLETICS
Based in UAE, Ultimate Athletics is a track and field academy for aspiring athletes of all ages. It has a strong presence in multiple locations, incl uding Dubai Sports City, GEMS Nations Academy, New York University and GEMS Modern Academy. Gui ded by its quest for success, its athletes are mentore d by professional coaches across varied disciplines including sprints, middle distance, high jumps, hur dles, long jumps and throws. Ultimate Athletics’ aim is to find the discipline that each individual can thrive and excel in and nurture that talent through regular systematic training, guidance, and support from nutritionists, physiotherapists and athletic wor kshops and coaching programmes. Spend the summer on the pitch with the Spanish Soccer Schools (SSS). As one of the leading football developmental aca demies in Dubai, SSS has a place for every footballer between ages 2 and 18 with a vari ety of skill levels for each age category. SSS is directed by ex-Real Madrid football legend and former Spanish Nationa l team player Michel Salgado. With the help of Inaki Beni former Real Madrid aca demy coach for 10 years, they have raised the academy from just 50 players to over 1,30 0 in three years. Ultimate Athletics encourages its athletes to perform at their open Ultimate Rac enight League, so that they can monitor and trac k their progress through regular timings and resu lts, training them up to win the league and claim rec ord holder awards. The academy, while adh ering to the highest professional standards, remains friendly and welcomes all levels and abil ities to strive for greatness in a healthy, competitive environment. A Summer Training camp is hosted during July and August on Sundays and Tue sdays from 7 pm to 8 pm at Dubai Sports City. The academy’s daily action-packed schedule will resu me in September.
