RE-IMAGING TOUL KORK MARKET Junior Year (2022) School Project Course: Achitectural Design IV Instructor: Robert Limanek Role: Individual Project

Reimagining Toul Kork Market is an ambitious endeavor to transform the conventional market into a dynamic urban complex, integrating living spaces with market facilities. Creating an inclusive and inviting environment, it encourages everyday interactions, exploration, and relaxation. With flexible design, green areas, and cultural events, the market becomes a vibrant hub fostering a strong sense of community. Residents and visitors contribute to the area’s daily life, making Toul Kork Market a cherished and significant place in their hearts and minds.

7

Originality of Toul Kork Market The big roof canopy of the existing Toul Kork market act as a datum in a form where its covers all the stall and shophouse together. So, the new form of canopy will act the same role to the existing Toul Kork Market which unite all form of elements into a whole new spaces.

Inspired from the original ideas of the original Toul Kork market by keeping the same original spirit. First, the new proposal of the floor plan still keep the same original Axis of original plan of Toul Kork Market. Moreover, the existing shop house and stall also remain the same from the original function while the new concept is applied to improve the quality of people’s living and their business in a new way.

The use of modular principle for shop house and stall design. As of Khmer culture and lifestyle, people tend to want things quicker and easier. So, by having a movable shophouse and stall, it provides and changes the way on how people lives and do their business. For shophouse, the front acts as the area for businesses and at the back, it’s mainly for the living space which is the same the from the old original function shophouse of the existing Toul Kork market. The stall is also movable where there are 3 type of stalls which serve different types of functions.

MEDI-HEAL Tokyo Urban Meditation Cabins (2023)

04

Type: Competition Role: Collaborative work with team of 5 members After a tiring day from work, from afar one would see a soft glowing fabric ‘lantern’ against the busy urban space. As one walking closer toward it, one will see the silhouette of the person meditating inside that give off a therapeutic feeling to them even before entering the ‘lantern’. Once they enter, they would feel secluded and safe to meditate while at the same time would still be connected to the outside world through the translucency of the soft fabric and silhouette of the exterior bamboo structures and the silhouette of people walking pass by. This therapeutic experience will not only limit to the one occupying the cabin but it is generous enough to provide similar experience to its surrounding environment including people walking passby as well. Due to its light-weight and therapeutic characteristics, this cabin is ideal to place on various locations such as bus stop or sidewalk where people getting off work and school would pass by. This is done to provide a refuge for them to release their stress and worries before going home to their love ones after a tiring day. On the other hand, this cabin can also be placed in public park where it can easily blend into the environment and provide additional secluded space for the public. The form of this cabin consists of 2 parts: the translucent fabric skin with bamboo structures and the bamboo floor that is lifted from the ground. The fabric skin wraps around the bamboo floor to form a seamless and rounded volume with no edge which is ideal for a meditation space to ensure calmness and avoid visual disturbance. The top of the cabin is opened to the sky to enhance the ventilation in the cabin and from a different perspective, it can be seen as a symbol of hope that one always can look up to during their challenging time.

39

Narrative Concept

40

A bamboo bed raised up from the ground that is enough for meditation is used as a starting point

A cover is provided to create a secluded space for the occupant

Soften the appearance of the cover by introducing soft translucent material to the cover

The hard edged are removed to create a rounded smooth form (edge-free) to minimize visual/psychological disruptions

The top of the cabin is squeezed which create a more intimate meditating environment for occupants

Narratively, the structure cut the form into 3 circular horizontal slides, psychologically, including the meaning of lucky

FLOW IN COMMUNITY Urban Utopia (2023) Role: Individual Project

47

“At the heart of this initiative lies a profound sense of unity, fostering an environment where residents, both old and new, are welcomed with open arms and nurtured with a sense of belonging. This shared sense of identity and pride empowers the community to overcome challenges and embrace diversity, finding strength in their collective resilience. By embracing sustainable practices, “Flow in Community” seeks to navigate the modern challenges of urbanization and energy demands. The integration of clean energy generation through hydro water currents ensures that the community remains self-sufficient while reducing its ecological footprint. The vertical garden, a lush green centerpiece, not only fosters a connection with nature but also acts as a symbol of harmony between people and the environment. Communication flows freely within this interconnected space, where ideas and solutions are exchanged openly and empathetically. This inclusive platform allows residents to actively participate in shaping the future, making collective decisions that benefit all members. The shared space for dialogue enables them to work together on solving pressing issues and ensures the preservation of communal values in the face of external pressures. As “Flow in Community” continues to thrive and grow, it becomes a living testament to the potential of sustainable communal living. It stands as a beacon of hope and inspiration, demonstrating that a harmonious relationship with nature, coupled with shared values, can lead to a prosperous and fulfilling way of life. In the embrace of the Tonle Sap river’s flow, this visionary community ventures forth into a bright and promising future, where the unity of its people and the beauty of the environment coalesce in perfect harmony.”
