“Form is Emptiness & Emptiness is Form”
Suk Wan Chan x Daria Stanek Photographer
I often wonder if there would ever be anyone who’d look at my garments and grasp the mood and the sense of its concept without me explaining or saying a word. It intrigues me because I find it difficult to explain to people unless they’ve equally had those same emotions. Then I met Daria. I discovered and met Daria through Matthew Chan (from Vol.1) and her work really appealed to me. Her work had this continuous touch of cinematic sense making every image captivating. For this collaboration, I requested very little from Daria, instead I wanted her to freely do whatever she wanted for the shoot. It was unfortunate that on the day of the shoot, our model opted-out and so Daria decided to ask me to fill in instead. I took this opportunity and expressed the mood as a model for this collection -as mentioned in Vol.1: Form of Facade A/W15-16 is about the unsaid and the masking of one’s own true emotions that encapsultates us; depicting a sort of loneliness. The results of the images were astounding. Daria wanted to capture the urbanity that surrounds us whilst keeping the overall aesthetic of the image clean and minimal. On the day we used only natural light and towards the end of the shoot, we took of advantage of the sudden downpour which naturally added a even more cinematic effect. She also used the shapes of each architecture and explored its angles making sense to the images as a whole. Throughout this series, you will find a few images of organic texture collaging alongside the photos. To my understanding, they imitate the organic drape and form of the garments adding more substance to Daria’s thought process and showing the level in which she understood the collection. It is rare to meet someone who will understand your work instantly then interpret it into their own art using their own style. Daria didn’t just took images for this collection, but created images that said a lot for my designs in general and my brand. I look forward to working with Daria again soon.
