LETTER FROM THE CREATIVE Welcome to the fifth issue of ST.ART Magazine, a visually driven independent magazine dedicated to promoting and exhibiting the creative talent of St. Andrews. As a platform to showcase the raw talent and inspired work of its contributing artists, ST.ART strives to champion creative freedom and vision. At the start of a new year, the theme ‘Identity’seemed fitting. Identity is about self-expression and discovery and what better way to launch our first issue of the academic year after our rebranding and launch of ST.ART online. All of this has been done in the hope that the magazine can provide a better platform from which to showcase the creative talent of the town. Our sponsorship from the Vic and Mitchell’S Deli has allowed the magazine to dramatically expand our events calendar and provide more opporunties for young creatives both in and out of St Andrews to get involved. The Identity Launch Event will take place Tuesday 6th Novemeber and we hope to see you all there. With your continued interest and support we will be able to ensure that ST.ART becomes a platform that will do justice to the incredible artistic talent of St. Andrews. Above all, the aim of ST.ART magazine is not to make you happy or sad, excited or calm, inspired or dejected, although it may do any or all of those things! The aim is simply to make you pause. And think. Remember, a picture truly can speak a thousand words. Enjoy.

“I feel with some passion that what we are truly is private and almost infinitely complex and ambiguous, and both external and internal, and double- triple- or multiply natured and largely mysterious even to ourselves. Philip Pullman Identity is static, fluid, self-defining, self-perpetuating, elusive, isolating, unifying. It is often two-sided. It is at once the means by which you define yourself and the way you present yourself to others. Identity is complicated and often conflicted. It is deeply personal and yet universal. It is collective and unique at the same time: the expression of someone’s individuality or their group affiliations. It is found in many different experiences and many different places. We all have defining characteristics we use to identify ourselves; it can be our hair colour or our clothes or education, class, nationality, sexuality, ethnicity, or even just memories.

Literature “The best way to get over a woman is to turn her into literature.” HENRY MILLER You are burst. A million tiny bubbles; fragments of prose, and – there – a single rhyming couplet. You are lyrics. Unsung. Ripped up, rewritten, thrown in the fireplace. You are crumpled in my pockets, scattered across my desk. You are scribbled and typed and folded into the back of my mind. You are letters written to other people.
