Advent- Waiting With Hope Advent (from Latin, adventus, meaning “coming towards:) is a four week season of preparation for Christmas, the birth of Christ. The First Sunday of Advent (November 30) marks the beginning of the church’s year. Advent and Christmas focus both on the past – the coming of Jesus as an infant born into poverty in Bethlehem, and the future – the coming of Christ in glory to fulfill God’s loving purposes for humanity. This past and future orientation is reflected in the readings appointed in the church for each Sunday of Advent. Advent this year comes at a time of anxiety and hope. Many of us are struggling and are afraid for our future. It's not easy to hope when times are bad. Mary and Joseph, as they waited for the birth of their child into an uncertain world, knew how to live with hope—to believe the promises of God. So Advent is a time when we wait, with Mary and Joseph, for the birth of new life into our uncertain world. Please join us for Sunday services at 10:00 a.m. followed by Brunch. Each Sunday of Advent, we will light the Advent Wreath in a spirit of hope that Christ will enter into our lives to bring his Light to our community. Deacon Michael McManus with gratitude to i.ucc.org.

GETTING TO KNOW BOB
Bob Hull, St. George’s Board President
Bob has served on the Board of Directors of the St. George Center since 1998, holding several leadership positions on the Board during that time. He is a member of Bethesda-by-the-Sea and has served on the vestry of that parish, chairing several vestry committees during his tenure.
WISH LIST 1. Paper Goods & Disposable Cutlery (Plates, Cups, Napkins, Toilet Paper, Forks, Spoons, Knives & Hand Towels) 2. Cleaning Products (Dishwashing Liquid, Mop Heads, Bathroom Cleaner, Bleach.)
Bob Hull, unlike many Palm Beach County residents, is a Florida native, being born in Orlando in 1932. (His parents were convinced that he was a chief cause of the Great Depression.) He attended the University of Florida and later, a Presbyterian theological seminary. He was ordained in the late 1950's a Presbyterian minister, serving as a university chaplain at Vanderbilt University. The reader might recall that the 1960's were a somewhat turbulent time in our country's history and that the university campuses were the centers of much of the activity.
The last 20 years of Bob's working life he served as president of the Southeastern Council of Foundations, an association of charitable grant-making foundations in the southern states. In 1998 he retired from that role and moved to Palm Beach to be with his wife, Shannon Sadler, who retired this year after 28 years as president of the Community Foundation of Palm Beach and Martin Counties. In retirement Bob and Shannon are avid supporters of St. George's mission and find their own ministry there as volunteers.
OUR BLESSINGS Most of us live amidst so many advantages, we tend to take them for granted. If you ever feel like you need a dose of reality, come to St. George’s and help us serve those who are truly disadvantaged.
The Board of Directors of St. George’s says…

History of Riviera Beach and St. George’s The first record of a settlement on Singer Island was in 1906. The community, called Inlet City was made up of fishermen from the Bahamas who wanted a place to dry their nets and keep their boats safe. In the 20’s Paris Singer, a son of the developer of Singer Sewing Machines, bought the island and planned to develop it with Addison Mizner. As a part of the development, rents were raised on Inlet City/Singer Island and the fishermen moved to Riviera on the mainland. Later Riviera changed its name to Riviera Beach. The fishermen were called “Conchs” because of their love of the shell fish, eaten raw with lime juice. At one time Riviera Beach was known as “Conch Town”. The “conchs” used their nautical background to build a strong marine industry and waterfront tourism. The Port of Palm Beach, which is in Riviera Beach, is the fourth busiest port in Florida. The city of Riviera Beach was incorporated in 1922 and St. George’s Church was established in 1938. According to Edith Judge, a historian of the church, the original thirteen members were “Conchs”.
