Mission St. Catherine’s School provides a rigorous education that prepares girls with diverse perspectives for a lifetime of learning, leadership and service in a global community.
Core Values To fulfill our Mission, we take these values as core: Pursuing academic excellence — We cultivate intellectual habits in which we take joy in learning through energetic inquiry, analytical and creative thinking, and continual striving to reach new levels. Developing character — We teach individuals to live with integrity, responsibility, confidence, compassion and respect for themselves and others. Nurturing spiritual growth — We enable each person to deepen her faith through worship, reflection, humility and the recognition of God in every human being. Celebrating individuals — We recognize the unique gifts and potential of each person and help each to recognize the strength that comes from differences.
Building community — We build up community within and beyond the school through teaching social responsibility, inclusiveness and leadership to prepare each person to serve others and contribute to healing the world.
Diversity Statement St. Catherine’s School is committed to providing an inclusive educational environment. We actively engage students, families, faculty and staff from diverse backgrounds and experiences. Consistent with the School’s Mission, St. Catherine’s fosters in our students, and expects from all others, respect for the dignity and wholeness of every person.
School Motto
“What we keep we lose; only what we give remains our own.” Instituted circa 1925, the School Motto is attributed to Louisa Bacot Brackett, headmistress from 1924 to 1947. She discovered the epithet carved on a tomb inside a small church in England. For nearly 90 years, this phrase has inspired St. Catherine’s students to lead lives of leadership and service.

Lower School Philosophy The Lower School is committed to the intellectual, physical, emotional, social and spiritual development of each student. We strive to maintain an affirming, caring and academically challenging community that will support inquiry and the risk-taking necessary for learning. Our curriculum balances expectations for excellence and a sensitivity to individual differences in development and learning style. Using a wide range of strategies that support the many different strengths and interests of our students, we strive to create a learning environment where students will develop critical thinking skills and engage in creative and flexible thinking that will prepare them for leadership in a global community. Through the spiritual life of the School, intentional instruction and nurturing relationships between students and teachers, children learn to act with integrity and consideration for others.
Curriculum Overview A girl-centered curriculum in the Lower School provides the means for each girl to realize her highest potential and the flexibility to address each student’s individual needs and differences. By building on their natural curiosity and enthusiasm for learning, teachers help the girls grow their confidence and competence. Instruction at all levels is interdisciplinary and incorporates a wide variety of multicultural materials and resources. Teachers provide individual assistance and monitor each girl’s academic growth. St. Catherine’s strives to educate the whole child.
STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math)
We introduce engineering and physics to our youngest girls through building activities and apps that teach coding to provide them with an early exposure and solid foundation in computational thinking. The STEM program is designed to provide girls with technological tools so they can collaborate, communicate, share and be productive as they learn to be responsible digital citizens. Lower School Innovation Days provide opportunities for hands-on project- based learning in collaborative multi-age groups.
Leadership and Virtues We believe that fostering leadership in girls is essential. Our virtues and character education program is interwoven throughout the school day to help the girls make the connection between leadership and strong moral values. Starting in the classroom and moving to larger venues, girls have opportunities to take risks, work collaboratively and make choices essential to learning self-reliance.

The Lower School guidance and counseling program addresses the developmental needs and concerns of girls in Early Learners (age 3) through grade 4. Through individual and small group experiences, girls grow in self-awareness and understanding, learn coping skills and work on interpersonal relationships. Resource Program
Students in Lower School are assessed at the beginning of the school year to determine their skill levels in reading and spelling. The resource team provides a support system to meet the needs of all Lower School students. Chapel
St. Catherine’s is a Church School in the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia. In the Lower School, chapel occurs three times a week. On special occasions, there are school-wide worship services. While we follow the Episcopal tradition, we welcome all faith traditions. Students and faculty in all divisions are encouraged to participate as readers, speakers, musicians, acolytes and ushers.

Middle School Counseling Program
Recognizing that early adolescence can be a challenging time in a girl’s life, the Middle School has guidance counselors and a strong advisory program. Through individual and small group sessions, the guidance counselors help girls work through the challenges of this age. In addition, the Middle School provides all students with guidance courses focused on personal growth and development. Ageappropriate topics include friendships and communication, self-esteem and body image, substance abuse prevention, decision-making skills and family life and wellness. Resource Program
Philosophy The Middle School is a small, cohesive community designed to nurture and challenge girls during early adolescence. Students are encouraged to ask questions, to seek creative solutions and to take risks as a part of learning. To facilitate this process, the curriculum stresses critical thinking and a balance between creative and skill-related activities. The Middle School places equal emphasis on the moral development of each student by developing personal integrity, leadership skills and a sense of self as a global citizen with a desire to serve the community. Through the curriculum and spiritual life, each girl is encouraged to recognize her own uniqueness and respect differences in others. Because of the great diversity in developmental rates and student needs, the Middle School seeks to provide a stable and reassuring environment that fosters joy in learning.
Resources Leadership/Advisory
Every Middle School student is a member of her homeroom’s leadership team. Activities are planned around themes of community service and outreach, multiculturalism, honor education and school life.
Resource teachers work with classroom teachers to develop and implement a customized academic plan, strategies for organization, productive study habits and lifelong learning practices. The resource classes in Middle School are composed of small student groups with documented learning differences. Chapel

While we follow the Episcopal tradition, we welcome all faith traditions. Students and faculty in all divisions are encouraged to participate as readers, speakers, musicians, acolytes and ushers. Community Service
Opportunities for service are a vital part of school life at St. Catherine’s. SOCKS (Serving Our Community Kids’ Style) is a Middle School community service program led by students, benefiting local, regional and international causes. Strong Circles
Girls in grades 5-8 come together in our Strong Circles Program to explore themes of honor, friendship, inclusion and service. They work on special projects throughout the year in which each girl’s voice is heard and celebrated.

Upper School Philosophy The Upper School provides a rigorous college preparatory curriculum and equips each girl for leadership and service in a global community. Through the breadth of curricular and co-curricular choices and by the flexibility of the program, we allow each girl to pursue her own interests in depth. A strong advising program, close relationships with teachers both in and out of the classroom, engagement in the community and self-reflection are central to this personal growth. While Upper School students are introduced to the major academic disciplines, the curriculum emphasizes skills that help students synthesize learning across the disciplines and that prepare students for success in the 21st century: critical thinking, advanced research, problem solving, collaboration and written and oral communication. In addition, the rich offerings in the visual and performing arts nurture creative thinking and expression. Our curriculum is enhanced by the Coordinate Program with St. Christopher’s School. Central to the
philosophy of the Upper School is the increased independence of our students. With this independence comes the responsibility each girl has to live with integrity, to contribute to a positive community and to use her unique gifts to make the world a better place.
Resources Advisory
A strong advising program ensures that every girl is well known as an individual by a faculty member who serves as her mentor for four years. The advisor assists the student in planning her schedule, making sure that graduation requirements are fulfilled and monitoring her progress and performance in and out of the classroom. Resource Program
An Upper School Learning Specialist meets with students on an individual basis in the Learning Center. Teachers, advisors or administrators may recommend that students work with the Learning Specialist at any time during the school year. Girls who are identified with a learning difference are also supported through the Learning Center. Counseling
Counseling services in the Upper School are dedicated to the personal growth of each student through the adolescent years. The counselor recognizes the joys and obstacles of adolescent development as well as the need for support during this exciting time of life. Services include individual counseling, group counseling, consultation with parents and faculty and coordination of school and community resources. College Counseling
The goal of our college counselors is to effectively support each student in the college admissions process. Through in-depth self-assessments,
group sessions and one-on-one meetings, our counselors work with each girl to find colleges that match her particular interests and qualifications. Communication between the counselors, students and parents begins in grade 9, and increases each year. PSATs are administered in October of the sophomore and junior year. After comprehensive discussions with the student and her family in the junior year, the student is encouraged to apply to a range of colleges reflecting varying degrees of selectivity. St. Catherine’s School is a member of the Southern Regional Division of the College Board, as well as the National Association for College Admission Counseling. St. Catherine’s graduates are accepted to highly selective colleges and universities across the nation and abroad. Chapel
St. Catherine’s is a Church School in the Episcopal Diocese of Virginia. In the Upper School, chapel occurs three times a week. On special occasions, school-wide worship is held at St. Stephen’s Church. While we follow the Episcopal tradition, we welcome all faith traditions. Students and faculty in all divisions are encouraged to participate as readers, speakers, musicians, acolytes and ushers. Community Service
Upper School students participate in a service-learning curriculum, which helps them apply academic, social and personal skills to improve their community. Students must complete 60 hours of community service before graduation (15 hours per year). Most girls well exceed the graduation requirement through their active participation in local, national and international causes. Athletics in Upper School
St. Catherine’s provides an expansive athletic program in grades 7-12, offering 40 teams in 14 sports that compete independently and in the League of Independent Schools. Approximately 70 percent of Upper School girls compete on a team. The athletic program focuses on sportsmanship, participation, leadership and teamwork.
X-Term
X-Term is a special enrichment program coordinated with St. Christopher’s. Students in grades 9, 10 and 11 join learning cohorts to study a topic of interest with a faculty member. X-term also features international and domestic trips and service. One Schoolhouse (OS)
To take advantage of the School’s consortium membership with OS, St. Catherine’s students in grades 9-12 may enroll in one or more online courses. Under certain circumstances, a student may apply to the Director of Upper School for permission to take a pre-approved online course offering as a sixth course in her schedule that counts toward elective credit in an academic department. Visit www.oneschoolhouse.org for more information. Intensive Studies Program
The Intensive Studies Program (ISP) provides an outstanding opportunity for girls to combine coursework with real-life experiences and independent learning. The education of a girl at St. Catherine’s is designed to give her fluency and mastery in a variety of subjects while empowering her as a leader who sees opportunities to help her immediate and larger community. While all of these aspects are embedded in the Upper School curriculum, the ISP is intended to offer focused and enterprising students a path to explore their chosen field comprehensively. Each ISP, whether in Arts, Entrepreneurship, Global Engagement or STEM, encourages girls to think about subjects that excite them by applying their knowledge in new ways to extracurricular and service projects. Students’ forays into these fields will culminate with a Capstone Project in which girls engage in research, project development and share their work with the community. It is a journey well worth taking.
2018-2019 Graduation Requirements One unit of credit is given for two semesters of study in a subject area. To graduate, a student must earn a minimum of 20 academic credits, distributed as follows:
