With deep grief, St Catherine's mourns the death of Jeanne Bounds Hamilton Even those who did not know her personally take pride in her accomplishments Printed obituaries and eloquent testimonials from her children during the funeral service held at St Stephen's Episcopal Church stressed her desire and that of her husband, Ross Hamilton, for a large family; and, consequently, the unconditional love of her mothering for each child and grandchild became a keynote of the service. In fact, her offspring, adults and toddlers, marched to their places at the church's front rows as though in a story book parade in her honor Even as Jeanne led her family as an ardent, devoted, loving mother, she continued her career as a brilliant mathematician: at Sweet Briar College she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, America's most prestigious Honor Society founded in 1776 Her energy did not stop there She became a systems analyst at IBM, a full-time elite position in itself At St Catherine's she was the fastest runner in our class, and while at Fishing Bay in Deltaville she set records for victories in sailing regattas even in her 80's. Fair Winds and Following Seas to you, dear Jeanne. With great sorrow we received news of the death of Molly Ellerson Durden, but her life

life force will remain with us, for Molly was, as Judy Carpenter Hawthorne ’75 put it, “fiercely proud to be a Saint.” She was a great White (vs. Gold) Senior Captain and a “consummate Southern Belle”, as her obituary notes. She had “ a sharp intellect” and “Steel Magnolia toughness ” All who knew her will miss her “larger than life personality” and gentleness There is sadness, too, in the letter from David Hamby stating that his mother, June Payne Hamby, “passed away earlier this year in September She was at home and surrounded by her loving family ” Our condolences to you, David Melinda Cumming Waltz wrote, “I’m still living in the house we bought here in Saskatoon, Canada, over 50 years ago. Bill died at Christmas last year, so it’s just the cat and me. I am doing well. Friends and family have been wonderful and I am busy with various activities such as bridge, book group, needlework, lunches and the like. All the family lives in Washington state, but they check in daily I love texting and video calls especially now that I have two great grandsons I think of St C often ” Ann Cameron McDonald wrote that she had a solo exhibition at the Mint Museum in Charlotte and received a full scholarship to the Pennsylvania Academy of Art (PAFA) She built a restaurant called La Grange des Agapes ("Barn of the Sheep") in the South of France in Cogolin, a village next to St. Tropez. In the next issue we shall hear the story of the restaurant. In our nation’s capital, Norma Brawley Dugger has written “I moved into the Rock Creek Ingleside Retirement community three-and-a-half years

ago and am enjoying easy access to the Kennedy Center and multiple concerts and plays and am delighted to be not cooking or gardening. My daughter Julie lives in Atlantic Beach, Fla., and enjoys finding real estate opportunities for investment. My daughter Patsy lives in Albany, Calif , but is building a vacation home in Nicaragua with her husband This April I had the great pleasure of organizing a bus group from Ingleside to come for an overnight in Richmond and to hear the Richmond Symphony chorus sing Mahler’s Resurrection Symphony It was a real triumph The next day I had lunch with Mary Denny Scott Wray at the museum before returning home on I-95 I’d love to do that more often! After 30 years as a travel agent, I’ve retired, but look forward to taking my family to Alaska this summer and to keep on truckin’ as long as the body holds out! Look forward to the next St. Cat’s reunion.” Mary Denny Wray’s most recent comment states that “other than enjoying our monthly lunches, I really have no news Love living in Westminster Canterbury Walk poorly but feel great ” Kit Zimmer Pannill wrote that she was looking forward to “ taking my entire family to Argentina for Christmas We were supposed to go to Egypt, but when the war broke out, I decided against it There are 10 of us We will be in Buenos Aires and Bariloche ” Charlotte Sterchi Sneed mentioned that “it was a pleasant surprise to hear from [class correspondent Ruth Stevenson] and be reminded of a truly magical time in my life. I have no newsy info for you except that Jim and I have left Atlanta and moved to St. Simons Island

on the Georgia coast to be near our daughter Catherine and her family We are all lined up on the East Coast now, which makes getting together easier! I was in Richmond about 20-plus years ago and went out to St. Catherine’s, which was quite a trip back in time. They only had four boarding students left, and I was transported back to 1957, walking through Bacot and surroundings. I did notice the same squeaky floor on the main level! Thank you again for that ray of sunshine from the past ” Molly Haskell, responding to “beautiful and timely quotes,” has reported that she is “working hard, writing reviews, doing the occasional panel and using whatever time and energy I have left to finish a memoir Everything takes longer but I’m still standing And grateful for that Love to everyone ” Jane Fant and your correspondent Ruth Stevenson had lunch togetherwith luscious Sangria - in Short Pump. We talked forever and closed the restaurant! Glennie Reynolds Martin ’59 left St. Catherine’s for Oldfield’s, married, and lives in Maryland. She and I (Ruth) have chatted on the phone periodically; when I’m lucky, I get to see her when she comes to Richmond on business trips Judy Cochrane Hines, artist, is not painting anymore, but her work is on display at LCVA (Longwood University), The Queen’s Center (Queen’s University), St Catherine’s School (Residence of the Head of School), and in several private collections The monthly luncheons in Richmond of alumnae from 1957 give those who meet at Mosaic Restaurant (all welcome) a sense of relaxation and pleasure. As Babs Childrey Fowler says, “The class of 1957 lunch bunch has shrunk in size but not in enthusiasm. Aches

and pains are discussed at length but we’re still standing!” Your correspondent agrees, Babs Everyone is “hanging in there” We still have fun and can talk about the “good old days.” We are lucky.

Kathy Powell Rolph shares that she had a wonderful visit in late April with her son Decker and his family in Boise, Idaho. On her return, she had a full right knee replacement. Kathy reports, “My recovery has gone really well thanks to being an athlete and to working at physical therapy twice a week Later in the summer I spent a month in the Woodstock, Vt , area where I used to live Seeing old friends and beginning to write my memoirs, under the tutelage of a retired English professor, who is a good friend, made it a special time for me This fall I was able to spend two weeks in Umbria, Italy, on a walking tour with my first cousin, who lives half the year in Italy and half in Denver, Colo It was wonderful to return to Italy where I have fortunately spent several other visits.”

Margaret Ferguson Gibson shares, “My 14th book of poems, Draw me Without Boundaries, will be published by LSU Press in the Fall of 2024 It's a book that crosses genre lines between prose and poetry and features two personae (or speakers), Lena and Zoe Lena is in a nursing home during COVID, and her granddaughter Zoe, an artist, has left NYC and her marriage and is deciding whether or not to complete a pregnancy she didn't plan. Climate crisis in the background. The language of poetry and prose plus narrative. Weird title: Zoe has said she wants to draw her grandmother, and Lena has responded, "Draw me without boundaries." Courtenay Sands Wilson, Ginny Williams Stanley and Marty Rogers Brown were able to join us Kenzie welcomed us with festive July 4th colors and beautiful hydrangeas from her yard

We enjoyed “delish” treats brought by all. Memories of our classes, days and faculty were shared with much laughter. How did the leadership at STC endure our questionable maturity and our antics? Undoubtedly we added many gray hairs to teachers and housemothers –but we survived as did they And we shared tips on living today as we age and some of the good memories of our families and things they taught us throughout our life Mary Davenport Nelson invited us for a dip in her lovely pool More memories were shared as we watched a few of our class take dips into the chilly waters A huge thank you to Kenzie and Mary for being such delightful hostesses and to their husbands, Happy Hubard and Kinloch Nelson, for making the day a very special day for all of us. Hmm. What can I, your correspondent Louise Hayman, write in early December that will seem seasonal in March? Not to mention that the deadline for these notes does not permit me to include tidbits from Christmas cards -- a mainstay of my primary source material (Remember primary sources from our term paper days?) We all extend our condolences to the family of Dottie Christman Moore on her death last October As a fellow four-year boarder, I recall her sense of fun and energy and, reading an extraordinary obituary written by her husband Jim, I wish I had stayed in better touch with her She clearly enriched the lives of all she touched. Cindy Parke Beukema bounced back last fall from yet another health challenge when she weathered COVID, contracted in the hospital just before heading to a rehab facility. She wrote, “I’ve been unwell, but I’m getting better every day Taking all prayers ” And you can bet we all send them Jean Grainger wrote that she enjoyed a fall visit with her sister to New

England She also reported she had seen Jane Cross Hamlin when the two found each other attending the same lacrosse tournament near Richmond. Merrielou Howser Symes offered a bountiful update beginning with her son’s wedding last September in Middleburg, Va. The bride and groom live nearby in Washington, D.C. Merrielou’s daughter, also a D.C. resident, will be following her brother down the aisle in September Merrielou chaired a Garden Club of America event hosted by her Nantucket Garden Club this past fall She enjoys seeing Eleanor Gibson Hale there and in Charleston, S C , where the Hales spend winters Merrielou has enjoyed seeing Louisa Tobias Campell when Louisa visits her daughter, a neighbor of Merrielou’s Merrielou greatly appreciated the condolences expressed by several classmates on the death of her husband in 2021 Daphne Pottle Coley texted that she loved being in touch with Janie Mebane McCall and your correspondent (threequarters of our Ellett III sophomore room. Where are you Alice Swilley Smith?) This is a first, but totally acceptable, means of contributing to these notes: Janie dictated the following to Daphne “Janie has sat on 837 bleachers babysat for 150 grandchildren and great grandchildren, sometimes three in a day This year she moved from her home of 36 years; helped marry off her namesake grandchild; volunteered as assistant to a school guidance counselor; hopped into a hot air balloon; sold picture frames at the Merchandise Mart and reseeded her new lawn ” We will hope her 5-year-old granddaughter doesn’t read these notes because Janie thinks she’s a genius despite the fact that she keeps urging her to find a new husband soon. Widow Janie seems to be doing just fine, and who could keep up with her?

60th Reunion April 19-20!

Daphne also has kept up with Florence Dunn Harvey and Frances Gravely, “uplifting a rather mundane year with some memorable nostalgic thoughts ” Your correspondent is in touch with Emily Borden Ragsdale, who has been able to resume travel after last winter’s complications from a hip replacement. The stork is expected to make two stops with the Ragsdale family this year. Another child for Em’s daughter and a first for her son. This deadline for these notes is exactly a week before I have a long overdue lunch scheduled with Lynn Hornor Keith I’ll leave this tid-bit to the editor to place, but I had a very unexpected and gracious email from Barbara Montgomery O’Connell ’65, prompted by a visit to my hometown Annapolis where she was visiting her grandson, a plebe at the Naval Academy I like that trend--no boundaries in connecting with other classes Lastly, I had the probable trip of a lifetime this fall when my daughter and I joined a small group of decorative arts aficionados on a Colonial Williamsburg Foundation-led trip to The Netherlands. Did not see a single blooming tulip, but the incredible private collections and special museum tours more than made up for that. Dinner with a count and countess served by liveried footmen in their castle was another highlight Walked so much I came home with a stress fracture on my foot Well worth it

All are welcome!” Kathy Barger Conrad notes that, in addition to being close to their children and grandchildren (“It’s a joy to be a part of their lives,” she says), she and John own a historic building in the Fan district and rent offices there as well as some retail space Kathy’s continuing her oil painting Mary Palmer Trice Legare says: “My favorite place to be is at our little river house on the Potomac near the Bay, so my current joy is opening it up for the summer I am ready for days without schedules, for lovely sunrises and sunsets, for being out on water and for time with my family (including new son-in-law) and friends On the new skills front, Susan Prouty says that she has gotten this far in life without mastering the art of baking bread.

In fact, I’ve never baked using yeast,” she says. “This is the year!” Mimi Hill Wilk has been looking forward to an adventurous spring break skiing at Sunrise in the White Mountains in Arizona with her grandsons “The dramatic elevation in Arizona makes it really fun to get out of the dry heat ” Tracy Charles Shenkman and her Davidson College classmates were anticipating their 50th reunion in May in a triumphant return, which Tracy says, “Will not be nearly as upsetting to the men as when we first set foot on campus in 1972!” Mary Borden Currin’s plans included a fabulous trip to Antarctica in January 2024 with daughter Ellen. “I have always loved the beauty of the ice floes and glaciers, and I want to see them in person as well as the unique wildlife: especially penguins, whales, and seals,” she says “I decided that it was now or never ” Molly Carpenter Sprouse writes,“I am increasingly aware of how quickly my bucket list is shrinking as I realize many of those goals are either unwise, unsafe, or just no longer appealing My list has been shaved off bungee jumping, skydiving, and riding a roller coaster I am much more content these days with savoring the ordinary. Life is grand.” Edie McRee Bowles and her husband Barney will embark on a Rhine river cruise in April to celebrate Edie’s retirement as the grants writer for Virginia's largest community health center, CVHS. “It has been a very fulfilling final development role, supporting health access for rural communities and underserved urban residents,” Edie says Edie's

Finally, I, your correspondent, Heather Spiess, was in Richmond in October with my sister, Holly Hofmann Archard ’82 for the Joni 50 celebration, where we experienced the exceptionally beautiful and state-of-the art Endeavour Hall and Love Jennison Family Theatre.

Although I remember fondly McVey Theatre and the many hours of dance classes and

Hi Class of ’92 Pals! It’s always fun to hear from all of you. For starters, let’s kick it off with Vanesa Baker-Stillman, who reports from Sarasota, Florida. “I work one day a week in a bilingual dental office as a dentist I will work more soon I am actively raising my five kids My oldest is a senior in high school ” Work more soon? Sounds like you are already working pretty hard, Vanesa! Best of luck continuing to balance your dental career with your family responsibilities Vanesa also mentions that she is on Facebook now under Vanesa Baker for anyone interested in finding her

Why not reach out to her and reacquaint yourselves? Katy Craven Campbell has a superexciting life update to share with us from the Research Triangle: “I was ordained to the priesthood on December 9 at Christ Church in Raleigh I am serving as a curate at St Stephen's Episcopal Church

in Durham, where my ministry is focused on pastoral care, outreach, children, and youth This move from Texas to North Carolina has brought such joy to my family We are so appreciative of living in a place where we get to experience four glorious seasons! If any St C folks find themselves

in The Triangle, I would love to meet up!” We are super proud of you, Katy, and wish you the best in your ministry to others Lanier Coles writes, “I'm running to serve on the board of the San Francisco Democratic Party. I'll be on the March presidential primary ballot in San Francisco. In San Francisco, Democratic Party politics are very competitive. My goal is to win 20,000 votes!” Good luck Lanier! Jean Davenport Hershey mentions that her only news for now is that she met up with Vicky Arcos in Los Angeles “Vicky is living near the beach with her rescue pup We had a great time catching up over lunch!” As your Class Correspondent I, Beth Cooper Lawing, must admit that I have not laid eyes on any of you in almost two years; however, my son Peter has a better track record Peter was in between NC State housing arrangements late last summer, so I asked my ‘ole pal Tivey Clark if a college kid she barely knows could crash with her family for 10 days. Graciously, Tivey agreed to have a third teenager join her household, and it sounds like everyone thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Isn’t it wonderful to be able to rely on our childhood friends in a pinch? Professionally, my big news is that I accepted a full-time job at Charlotte Country Day School to teach seventh grade Life Science

Every day, I get to channel my inner-Martha Bedinger Holt ’75 with adolescents, which is great fun On top of being my high school advisor all four years, Mrs Holt also taught me 6th, 9th, and 11th-grade sciences, so I really do mean it that I think of her each day and am especially thankful for all of the content that she taught us! Take care of your sweet selves and stay connected!
