RY O T S THE ... S E U IN T N O C It is hard to believe that a year has already passed since the St. James first opened its doors to the public. During that time we have presented eight productions, written, directed and performed by some of this country’s most noted practitioners including Dr. Jonathan Miller, David Grindley, James Dacre, Diana Quick and Barry Rutter. We launch our second year with ‘Scenes from a Marriage’, Ingmar Bergman’s classic play directed by Sir Trevor Nunn and starring Olivia Williams and Mark Bazeley. We follow this with ‘In The Next Room or The Vibrator Play’, the five star winner of the TMA Best New Play Award; written by the exciting American writer Sarah Ruhl and directed by Laurence Boswell from the Ustinov Studio at Bath Theatre Royal, this promises to be a stimulating evening. Over the Christmas period our younger theatregoers will be charmed and entertained by Tall Stories’ inventive production of Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s ‘The Snail and the Whale’. In the new year we are thrilled to bring you the Tony Awardwinning musical, ‘Urinetown’. Funny, romantic and offbeat, it will be staged by Olivier award-winning director, Jamie Lloyd. To round off this exciting season we welcome back Out of Joint, under the direction of Max Stafford-Clark, with ‘This May Hurt A Bit’; Stella Feehily’s satirical and surreal take on our great national institution, the National Health Service! I hope you will join us as the St. James Theatre goes from strength to strength. We look forward to welcoming you to this exciting seasons of plays.

SCENES FROM A M A R R I AG E

Directed by Trevor Nunn By Ingmar Bergman Adapted for the stage by Joanna Murray-Smith

Scenes from a Marriage is a portrait of extraordinary intimacy and a searchingly honest and moving love story. We follow Johan and Marianne from their seemingly perfect marriage through betrayal and loss to warring contenders in divorce and beyond. Directed by Trevor Nunn, one of the UK’s leading theatre, film and television directors, the play stars award-winning stage and film actor Olivia Williams, most recently seen in the West End in In a Forest Dark and Deep (Vaudeville Theatre) and on film in The Sixth Sense, An Education and Roman Polanski’s The Ghost Writer; and Mark Bazeley, whose theatre credits include Our New Girl (Bush Theatre), The Seagull (National Theatre), and Death of a Salesman (Lyric Theatre, West End). Ingmar Bergman’s Scenes from a Marriage was originally created for television and has acquired classic status. This adaptation for the stage by Joanna Murray-Smith is an emotionally powerful and compellingly visceral exploration of what happens when a marriage disintegrates.

By Stella Feehily Directed by Max Stafford-Clark Designed by Tim Shortall. Lighting by Jason Taylor Sound by Andy Smith “It would be a great reform in politics if wisdom could be made to spread as easily and rapidly as folly” Winston Churchill A month after stating “we will stop the top-down reorganisation of the NHS that has got in the way of patient care”, the government launched the biggest top-down reorganisation the service had seen in its 65-year history. With characteristic wit, tenderness, and surrealism, Stella Feehily’s new play explores one family’s journey through the digestive system of the NHS, and asks: what is the prognosis for this much-loved, and fiercely debated, institution? Out of Joint returns to the St. James Theatre following their raved-about production of Our Country’s Good. Stella Feehily’s plays for Out of Joint have been produced at the Royal Court and Soho Theatre. They include Bang Bang Bang, Dreams of Violence, O go my Man and Duck.
