2015-16 Annual Report

A Letter from Board President Bob Foster The length of this annual report is a testament to the depth of support from the St. John’s community. Every single name represents a belief in and a commitment to this school’s mission. It takes all of us working together to insure our children are receiving the best possible education, and it is remarkable to be part of such a strong group of families, alumni and alumni parents, Board and friends – who are so dedicated to St. John’s.

Financially, St. John’s is on strong footing thanks to your understanding of the need for unrestricted operating funds through the annual fund and for long-term support of the school’s endowment and special projects. The Board and I are committed to being good stewards of the budget and the money with which you have entrusted us. We are grateful to have you as partners in the growth of St. John’s, and we’re blessed to have the opportunity to be a part of your children’s lives. Thank you for your dedication, trust and generosity. Sincerely,

St. John’s is a dynamic center of learning, thanks to your volunteerism and financial support. Your generosity is demonstrated daily in small and big ways: at carpool, in the cafeteria, on field trips, on committees, at PA meetings, in the library and on athletic courts, as well as during school wide events hosted by the Parents Association and Crusader Club. Not only do you make our school stronger, you also set a wonderful example for our children who are learning about philanthropy and compassion. Throughout their time at St. John’s, children learn to value the opportunities to give back through their community service both on and off campus. It is a tribute to this culture that - as our eighth graders graduate - they feel compelled to present a Gift of Gratitude to the school.

A Letter from Head of School Mark Crotty Thomas L. Friedman’s fascinating treatise Thank You for Being Late: An Optimist’s Guide to Thriving in the Age of Accelerations has major implications for education. He outlines three main accelerators driving continual change – technology, globalization, and climate change/ biodiversity loss – and their wide-ranging effect on the workplace, economics, geopolitics, ethics, and community. Transformative upheaval arises with increasing frequency. Meanwhile, we have the daunting responsibility to consider the unknowns and the skills our children must gain to successfully navigate their current and future worlds. The role of St. John’s in such a world is strongly linked to our ideas about modern education. Our goal, as stated in our tagline, is to instill both a love of knowledge and the courage to use it. Friedman states, “When the pace of change gets this fast, the only way to retain a lifelong working capacity is to engage in lifelong learning.” To do so, one has to know how to learn, not just how to be taught. This challenge is at the core of who we are at St. John’s. Friedman adds, “In the 21st century, knowing all the answers won’t distinguish someone’s intelligence – rather the ability to ask all the right questions will be the mark of true genius.” One needs to continue to ask the right questions and appreciate that continual re-questioning leads to better responses to challenges. I see this in action every day at St. John’s. First graders learn how to build their own zoo after questioning and researching best practices for constructing environments suitable to the animal they want to know more about. Second graders participate in a world-wide tulip planting experience and

question which tulips will bloom first based on their hands-on experience in science and examination of the world’s climate. Third graders study the vital role of water with a community service aspect that brings the need for clean water in thirdworld countries to their attention. In fourth grade, students create their own businesses complete with a true corporate structure, stock, and products to market and sell. These are just a very few examples from Lower School which become larger, deeper experiences in Middle School. In one amazing case, this fall eighth graders explored the American political system, creating their own parties and developing platforms based on their beliefs. By using the structure employed within our government, students could push their understanding of policy and consider new approaches. But this education is not enough. What gets done with it? What is the impact? How does one make the world better? Friedman refers to “sustainable values” such as honesty, humility, integrity and mutual respect. It is about how you carry yourself through life. We believe social and emotional development are equally important as intellectual development. This growth is developed over the entire course of a St. John’s education culminating in the 8th grade service learning projects spearheaded by teams of confident student leaders who have the desire and ability to impact a range of realities – elder care, poverty, immigration, and environmental concerns. This learning is grounded in community. Students benefit from strong relationships with faculty who care deeply about them as human beings and who dedicate themselves every day to teaching important skills and attitudes – discernment, problem-solving, questioning, empathy, and collaborating, communicating and resilience. Students also develop lifelong friendships with each other. Continued....

Community responsibility extends into what each of you gives to St. John’s every day – your trust in us as your children’s educators, your volunteerism that shows students you believe in the school, and your financial support that provides needed resources for our talented faculty and this facility. Your leadership and willingness to give back to the school validates our mission and commitment.

Thank you for enriching St. John’s with your time, your talent, and your treasure – the greatest of which is your children.

This is a complicated world for which we are preparing your children, and the success of this community is built upon your support.

Annual Fund

The Annual Fund demonstrates the generosity of our stakeholders, who invest in the very best for our school. Gifts to the Annual Fund create a legacy of learning for students. This year with your support, St. John’s exceeded its financial goal of $250,000 with a historical level of Annual Fund giving surpassing $300,000. Under the guidance of Monica and Jonathan Blacker, our outstanding campaign volunteers made it all happen.

You Make a

DIFFERENCE 20I5-I6 ANNUAL FUND

North Texas Giving Day was a huge success. Donations made that day received bonus dollars through the Communities Foundation of Texas. On September 17, 2015, because of the participation of 336 St. John’s families and friends, we qualified for $9,959 in bonus dollars. In total, we received more than $147,000 in support of our Annual Fund during this single day of fundraising. This is an amazing result for our community! The Annual Fund continues to enhance the experience children enjoy at St. John’s Episcopal School. Parents, alumni, grandparents, parents of alumni, faculty, and staff affect the school’s ability to design and implement engaging programs that capture students’ imagination and lead them to become well-rounded, confident learners. Your investment benefits every facet of St. John’s. Your generous gifts: • help St. John’s recruit and retain dynamic faculty • support innovative curriculum development • enhance vibrant classroom technology • sustain up-to-date technology • fuel student leadership and community service learning • enrich athletics and the arts • provide students with financial aid • augment faculty development • beautify our idyllic campus Thank you for insuring the education of tomorrow’s great thinkers and leaders. We appreciate your ongoing support!

Endowment

Named Endowment and Special Purpose Funds Endowment funds are permanent funds invested to provide income for St. John’s long-term stability and strength. By making an endowed gift, you leave a lasting legacy and demonstrate an important commitment to the current and future needs of our school.

Faculty Endowment Funds Teacher Endowment The St. John’s Teacher Endowment Fund was established in 1995 to provide the school with a continuing source of income for teacher salaries and benefits.

Financial and Endowment Funds Dorothy Patterson Memorial Scholarship Fund The Dorothy Patterson Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in 1981 by Mr. and Mrs. Jim Cook in memory of Dorothy Patterson, the original first grade teacher at St. John’s. The fund was created to provide financial assistance to students who would not otherwise be able to receive an independent school education and to families faced with unexpected hard times.

Head’s Discretionary Scholarship Fund The Head’s Discretionary Scholarship Fund was created by the Class of 2002 with a challenge for all future graduating classes to donate to this fund. The fund will allow a student to continue his or her education at St. John’s if the family encounters unforeseen financial circumstances.

St. John’s Diversity Endowment Fund The Diversity Fund was created to provide financial aid to and increase the population of students from diverse backgrounds.

Special Purpose Endowment Funds St. John’s Student Library Endowment The St. John’s Student Library Endowment was established by the Huff family to provide a continuing source of income for library enhancements, author visits and additional books.
