I invite you to read this Annual Report in which we highlight our exceptional students, alumni, and how our Marist charism of St. Marcellin Champagnat is at the heart of everything we do We acknowledge that this would not be possible without the unyielding dedication of our parents, grandparents, alumni parents, friends, alumni, community partners and students Saint Joseph Academy is your school
Thank you for your support in leading us to this exciting time in the school’s history as we work to mold SAINTS and SCHOLARS. We look forward to your continued partnership in the years ahead

In April 2022, Saint Joseph Academy received a historic and transformative $1M gift from SJA alumnus, Fernando De Leon ’97, to establish the endowed “De Leon Scholars Program” and the “De Leon Excellence in Education Award”
This transformative gift the largest single gift in SJA’s 157-year history will have an indelible impact on students and teachers for the foreseeable future “Fernando feels a strong personal responsibility to give back to the school that contributed to the man he has become and the success he has achieved,” said SJA President, Michael Motyl “ This gift is an investment in the formation of generations of young men and women. We are profoundly grateful for Fernando and his family ’s commitment to supporting our students and educators. Both the De Leon Scholars Program and the De Leon Excellence in Education Award will continue to deepen our approach to relational teaching and learning, enhancing both the philosophical and educational aspects of the Marist, Catholic education that St Joseph Academy provides ”
The purpose and goal of the De Leon Scholars Program is to recognize and reward students in the 9th – 12th grade who contribute to and make a difference at Saint Joseph Academy, in their home, community at large, and who are likely to continue to do so in the future In addition to a tuition-assistance award from Saint Joseph Academy, De Leon Scholars will enjoy numerous other benefits that will extend beyond their years at SJA from backpack to briefcase including mentoring and internships opportunities as they navigate to and through college This year ’s recipients are 11th graders Andrea Jasso ‘23, Cynthia Gonzales ‘23 and Julio Cesar Silguero ‘24.
Similarly, the De Leon Excellence in Education Award aims to recognize and acknowledge those SJA educators that are making significant and noteworthy contributions to the school community. They are the difference makers, the role models, and significantly contribute to the academic success of Saint Joseph Academy students.
“SJA supported a lot of us with tuition assistance and changed our life’s trajectory. The dual cultures that we learned to navigate at SJA are the perfect background for developing versatile, conscientious, and talented young men and women that can make a global impact. We’re delighted to support one of the most important institutions in Brownsville,” said Fernando De Leon.

SAINT JOSEPH ACADEMY 101 club
The 101 Club was created with the intent of arming our Athletic Department with the means needed to provide our teams with the best possible equipment, travel, uniforms or any additional items that our teams may need or want in order to be competitive The reason for the number '101' is symbolic Our school's address is 101 St. Joseph Drive. The 101 Club is meant for alumni and friends of the program to invest $101 or more back to their "home"
In 2021, we raised $43,000! Our funds were used to purchase new uniforms for middle school girls’ and boys’ basketball teams and our middle school football teams to name a few On our c a m p a i g n l a u n c h d a y , N o v e m b e r 3 0 t h : D a y o f
Giving, we rallied in the Saint Joseph Academy Administration Boardroom with all of
SJA
the head coaches calling our Bloodhound alumni and community supporters to gain support. It was a lot of fun and we enjoyed rallying around our athletes!
In 2019, the Athletic Department formed the 101 Club and asked former Bloodhounds to donate $101 or more to the SJA Athletic Department. The money that was raised that year was used to purchase stadium lights for Canales Field In 2020, the appeal was to purchase football helmets with the newest technology that have computer chips to measure a player's impact. In 2021, we expanded the 101 Club to provide unrestricted funds for ALL sports. Donors have the option for their gift to be allocated to a specific need for a specific sport at their request which assists the Athletic Department with expanding the overall athletic experience for our athletes to make the most out of their journey at St. Joseph Academy. The 101 Club funds will be allocated directly and solely to the Athletic Department
Bloodhound Alumni and community supporters are invited to join the 101 Club which will not only support our athletes, but also comes with different levels of membership with different benefits. There are options for one time, monthly, or yearly memberships to the 101 Club. Every gift is appreciated.

SAINT JOSEPH’S DAY OF GIVING
SJA
Among the many special events and traditions that currently take place throughout the school year, our annual Giving event, Saint Joseph's Day, truly allows us to put all else aside and reflect on what it truly means to be Marist. During this day we celebrate the Feast of Saint Marcelin Champagnat and ask the SJA community to help us in making a difference by contributing to the SJA Fund.
The donations given on St Joseph’s Day, made a significant impact to the SJA Fund. In part, the monies raised helped with renovation projects around campus such as u p d a t i n g c l a s s r o o m s , b e a u t i f i c a t i o n o f o u r grounds, and purchasing of new equipment for the computer lab. In addition, we were able to provide many families with tuition assistance True to our mission we want to ensure that every student receives the opportunity for a Marist education and in providing tuition assistance, we are able to achieve this goal
In giving back to the SJA community, Saint Joseph Academy is able to lay the ground work for future student achievement. Our success is due largely in part on the support from those who believe in our school community and mission
The Saint Joseph Academy family expands far and is always at its best when we rally together. Collectively, we can make a difference for not only the benefit of the school but more so for our students This was made quite evident as alumni and the SJA community came together and raised more than $80,000 on Saint Joseph’s Day!
It truly was a great event! An alumnus, opened their home as the “headquarters” for the day, allowing faculty, staff, students and alumni to gather and work together. There was an abundance of food, drinks and comradery with a shared love for SJA. You could feel the positive aura in the room and the great vibes radiating from all that had come to ensure the success of St. Joseph’s Day. The tremendous amount of school spirit was vibrant and it was comforting to know that everyone there shared the same love for their alma mater
At Saint Joseph Academy, we pride ourselves in making sure our first priority is being able to give students the tools they need to learn, grow, and become successful community leaders and St Joseph’s Day is one more way for us to continue doing that. As they say “Make an Impact! Make a gift!”
SUMMER IMPROVEMENTS
The Saint Joseph Academy campus was buzzing with action this past summer as we prepared for the new school year with numerous upgrades and improvements on our beautiful campus. We are most grateful to the SJA community for their steadfast support in helping make these upgrades a reality. It is because of you that we are able to make these improvements to our school and for our students.
In 2021, SJA began creating a Capital Improvement Plan, supported by a Capital Improvement Fund. It aimed to address several large facility projects and needs around campus. In addition to the routine improvements in classrooms, with the help grant funds from the Kenedy Memorial Foundation and funds from the Our Tradition, Our Future Campaign, we were able to completely renovate three underutilized rooms into classrooms to accommodate our growing enrollment These classrooms all received new floors, cabinetry, decorative wainscoting , freshly painted walls, new whiteboards and updated technology!
In addition, Saint Joseph Academy received a major gift from alumnus Fernando De Leon ’97 combined with funds specifically allocated from the Our Tradition, Our Future Campaign to fully renovate the computer lab making it a state-of-the-art space complete with all new computers. Once routinely avoided on school tours, the new computer lab is now one of the highlights on the SJA campus.
The SJA Capital Improvement Fund has allowed the school to continue with its multi-phase roof replacement plan. Now in its second year, Phase II of the plan has been completed with the new roof over the Chapel wing The Capital Improvement Fund also enabled the school to replace all the stadium lights on Canales field with energy-efficient, long lasting LED lights. Many thanks to SJA alumnus, Chris Harwood ‘87 for assisting the school to ensure it maximized a special rebate incentive program with the Brownsville Public Utilities Board.
Last but not least, the old Bookstore/Storage Room (formerly the main office pre-2005) was completely gutted and renovated with new floors, built-in cabinets and storage, exposed “rustic” ceiling,
new air-conditioning and painted walls. This newly designed space is the home of the new Bloodhound Café where students can gather over an iced-coffee and muffin or shop for the latest SJA merchandise. This project was made largely possible by the hardworking parent group, PAWS (Parents at Work) Their dedication to St Joe, its staff, and students is remarkable. This new space was due in part to the Bloodhound Ambassadors who ran the “I Love SJA” fundraising campaign amongst the student body, raising money to benefit their own school.
Saint Joseph Academy is blessed to have such an outstanding community of supporters who continue to show their love and respect for the school.
